WSA GLOBAL CONGRESS 2022 HACKING GAPS & CONNECTING 4 IMPACT GLOBALLY The 17 UN SDGs are a global and urgent call to action to all countries and people on the globe. Digital tools, creative entrepreneurship and global cooperation are among the most promising drivers to reach the UN SDGs. The WSA Global Congress empowers you to connect with creative and purpose-driven entrepreneurs, get to know inspiring solutions for the UN SDGs, and connect with a global community to collaborate, share and learn. This year - due to the global pandemic, WSA Global Congress again needed to take place as virtual journey around the globe. We met, discussed, engaged, shared and learned - virtually but sustainably.

“We all know the Internet has not only positive effects but also negative ones when it comes to social media campaigning, disinformation, and fake news. What we at WSA are looking at is just different. We look at different kinds of realities, facing different societal environments with all kinds of gaps – concerning content, gender, wealth, accessibility – and we gather people who use technology for a good purpose, for social impact and for narrowing the digital divides. We create a society of mindful people.” Prof. Peter A. Bruck, Chairperson of WSA Board of Directors

WSA WELCOME STATEMENTS “[ ...] the German Development Ministry also wants to make its contribution to close the digital gap and build new bridges. Half of the world’s people have no access to the internet, and this means that many people are not only excluded from the opportunities and the possibilities of the digital transformation, this inequality also hampers political, economic, and social participation. Women and girls are especially disadvantaged in terms of access to and use of digital technologies. And in the course of the Covid-19 pandemic these inequalities have increased even more. And this must end. Together with the World Summit Awards all of us are collectively striving for inequitable and fair digitalization worldwide. The WSA has been a reliable and valuable partner since 2018 for my ministry’s Make-IT Alliance. Together we have already achieved a great deal. We have made good progress on identifying and using digital solutions to fight climate change [...]. We are working closely with the WSA in 16 Centers for Digital Transformation to jointly promote local digital innovations [...] This year’s WSA winning projects are all about innovative solutions that open up new opportunities to overcome gaps and build bridges. Let us use this year’s Global Congress to share and discuss successful ideas and to learn from another.’’ Svenja Schulze, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany

Watch Welcome Statement

“UNIDO and WSA have collaborated closely for many years and (we are) pleased to continue to be part of this collaboration. [...] The way we live and work is fundamentally changing. The digitalization of learning, socializing, shopping, communicating has accelerated due to the pandemic. No sector has been left untouched by this rapid transformation. My particular concern are the many countries in the world that lack the necessary infrastructure, countries that struggle to prepare and train their workforce for the digital world and age. We must look for practical solutions, solutions that can be replicated and mainstreamed and ensure that no one is left behind. I congratulate the WSA for its promotion of digital innovation and youth entrepreneurship. It is so important to support and connect young technopreneurs and share the innovative solutions from around the world. [...] We must listen to and engage with young people and make sure that the ideas of young people are being realized. We cannot build a future that ignores the visions of the young generation. [...] We can solve hunger, poverty, or climate change. We need political will, and we need more partnerships and knowledge exchange. UNIDO will continue working with the WSA to bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions to the forefront of the sustainable development agenda.’’

WSA GLOBAL CONGRESS 2022 - CONNECT 4 IMPACT A VIRTUAL JOURNEY AROUND THE GLOBE WSA (World Summit Awards) has been initiated in 2003 as an Austrian activity in the framework of the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and is since then, selecting and promoting digital innovation contributing to the achievement of the UN SDGs from all UN member states. Digital technologies are one of the main drivers for the United Nations Agenda towards the Sustainable Development Goals towards the review in 2030. Modern technology combined with a social cause and smart content not only solves problems, it enhances equality, information access and inclusion. The WSA Winners and WSA Young Innovators 2021 provide a meaningful selection of worldwide content driven applications with positive impact, focusing on the world’s most pressing issues – be it climate change, health, agriculture or gender equality – and providing digital solutions to react to the global pandemic.

WINNERS INNOVATION PITCHING SESSIONS The 40 WSA Winners already proved that their products are the most innovative solutions chosen in the democratic and tough selection process of the WSA. Each WSA Winner had to first succeed in a local competition to prove their product to be most promising from their country in the respective category. Each UN member state is eligible to nominate 1 product per WSA category. For 2021 WSA received 293 submissions from 68 participating countries. 96 Online Jurors decided on a shortlist per category that was presented to the WSA Grand Jury, which then selected the 40 WSA Winners that have been invited to the WSA Global Congress - Connect 4 Impact 2022.

At the Global Congress the winners pitched their products in front of an expert jury. Each team had 3 minutes to pitch, followed by about 3 minutes Q&A to convince and impress the jury. The highest ranked winning teams in the criteria product. pitch and impact were awarded and announced as Global Champions at the WSA Award Ceremony. The jury members voted on PRODUCT | IMPACT | PITCH. The WSA Winners demonstrate the richness and diversity of local content and prove that digital solutions are key to reach the UN SDG´s. Each pitching session was followed by an interactive panel discussion with all winners of the category and selected experts.

Therefore, WSA matched each of the winning teams with 2 international mentors, using their vast experience and insights to provide new thoughts and ideas on business modeling, reaching the target group, going international or improve their reach through marketing and communication. Pitching online is even more challenging than on stage - in order to support the Winning Teams, each received a Peergroup training by international experts, preparing them for their 3 minutes pitch.
