WSA GLOBAL CONGRESS 2021 - CONNECT 4 IMPACT

A VIRTUAL JOURNEY AROUND THE GLOBE

The 17 UN SDGs are a global and urgent call to action to all countries and people on the globe. Digital tools and creative entrepreneurship are among the most promising drivers to reach the UN SDGs. The WSA Global Congress empowers people to connect with creative and purpose-driven entrepreneurs, get to know inspiring solutions for the UN SDGs, and engage with a global community to collaborate, share and learn. This year - due to the global pandemic, WSA Global Congress took place as virtual journey around the globe. Congress participants discussed, engaged, shared and learned - virtually but sustainably. That´s why WSA chose the topic of this congress „Connect 4 Impact“.

The global pandemic demonstrated how important digital solutions can be for society - in terms of education, health, in order to stay in touch and connect. Covid-19 was especially challenging for the youth and the elderly, for young entrepreneurs and start-ups. At the WSA Global Congress we discussed how we can stand together, how to show solidarity and empathy. But also find new solutions and ideas how to build the future we want instead of the „old“ economy. We met inspiring entrepreneurs from all around the world Thank you for joining us on this truly global journey. Prof. Dr. Peter A. Bruck, WSA Chairman, Austria

WSA WELCOME STATEMENTS “I am delighted to see people from so many countries and sectors sharing their vision on how to build better future together. We need collective action and strong partnerships to achieve our global goals. And this is particularly true in these challenging times. In the least developed countries alone, the pandemic projected to force an additional 32 million people into poverty. We need strong and inclusive partnerships in order to drive digital innovations and transformation so as to make the world a healthier, more prosperous and more equitable place.’’ Watch Welcome Statement

Dr. Maria Flachsbarth | Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development | BMZ | Germany

‘’I have the greatest confidence in the curiosity and resourcefulness of today’s young people. I call on all of you, to continue to come together to support our youth, to align the wishes process with the SDGs and to make ICT technology work for development everywhere and for everyone. I wish you a successful WSA Global Congress 2021.’’ Watch Welcome Statement

Houlin Zhao | ITU Secretary-General

‘’I believe that this year’s theme connect for impact truly reflects the spirit of today’s generation of young people. Not only do today’s youth make up the largest generation of young people that our world has ever seen, but it is also the most interconnected and educated generation in history. Without a doubt the young people that are joining this summit, as well as many others in the world out there, are digital natives who are regularly utilizing the power of technology and connectivity to solve challenges and bring positive impacts in their communities and countries. Without technology and innovation it is impossible to achieve the SDGs by 2030. I hope that in this summit you will not only find a new partner to share your unique perspective, but ideas networks and you will also take this opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and fill in each other’s gaps, so that we can all jointly work together towards a better sustainable future.’’

WSA WELCOME STATEMENTS “The opportunities created by novel technologies and disruptive innovations, promise to deliver the fair and sustainable recovery Europe needs. But Europe risks missing out on these opportunities if half its population is overlooked as a source of innovation and creative talent. We need to continue to celebrate the incredible achievements of women who are digital leaders, so that they can go on to inspire young women and girls to follow in their footsteps. If all women could reach their full potential we could move faster towards achieving the UN‘s sustainable development goals and add 12 trillion dollars to global GDP by 2025. Digital technologies offer us an opportunity to create a more sustainable and fairer society, if we make the right choices now we can create the future we want to see.“

Mariya Gabriel | European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth | Bulgaria

Watch Welcome Statement

“We do have a lot of issues to solve and we have a lot of opportunities. The issues lie in the field of healthcare, as well as in the field of education, and of the production of food. Also in the field of good and modern production and industry. The opportunities that we have are endless and we have a lot of technology available today, that we didn’t have hundreds, fifteen or even 10 years ago. Think about artificial intelligence, think about block chain and IoT. These are all possibilities that we have today, and we should use them, and we should support the next generations to take this opportunity and to make something out of it.’’ Watch Welcome Statement

Global data from UN Women Numbers shows that women are still underrepresented, underpaid, and often discriminated against in the tech industry. As of today, nearly half of the world is still offline (3.6 billion people)—many of whom are women from developing countries. At the current rate of internet growth and adoption, universal affordable internet will not be achieved until 2043. In low- and middle-income countries, 433 million women are unconnected and 165 million fewer women own a mobile phone compared with men. In the United States, half of all tech startups do not have any women in their leadership teams, and women in tech hold only 24% of available senior vice president or other senior leadership positions. Report on The State of European Tech, on gender composition by job title for Executive-level positions found just 1 female Chief Technology Officer out of a sample of 175.

Hack the EDUCATION Gap School closures kept most students out of school and remote learning to use technology still is out of reach for at least 500 million students during the pandemic. I believe that change also needs impulse from the outside and the WSA network is an excellent chance to reach a broad audience and open up to external ideas. I am particularly pleased that the youngest member of the Umdasch Group family, our innovation hub Umdasch Group Ventures, has developed this year’s challenge and is awarding the Josef Umdasch Research Prize. THE PURPOSE REVOLUTION by Nikolaus Hutter, New Paradigm Ventures, Austria Our World, and with it our economy, is changing: technological development, socioeconomic and demographic shifts, and environmental change including biodiversity loss and climate change - are fundamentally reshaping how, where, for and by whom, and what is produced, consumed and invested in. However, underneath these drivers lies a deeper one, a shift in purpose, the why. In this session attendees explored the Purpose Revolution, and what opportunities and risks it presents in the future.

INNOVATING GROWTH by Paul Hughes, Ten Meters of Thinking, Ireland In this workshop participants learned how the best Leaders create a Culture of Innovation by understanding the difference between Problem Solving & Opportunity Seeking.

23 DIGITAL IS PHYSICAL by Anton Schubert, Gofore Good Growth, Design Director, Finland Digital services may seem on the surface free from the usual sustainability issues associated with physical products and the manufacturing process. However, digitalization is often a powerful enabler that drives huge increases in consumption, energy use and pollution. How can we better understand the impact of our digital services and identify where changes can be made to improve the overall system sustainability. In this workshop we covered Value Chain Mapping and Impact and Influence exercises as a dip into the tools and methods of the Good Growth methodology and toolkit.

THE EXONOMICS OF CHANGE by Niki Skene, Austria In this 1h Webinar, Niki Skene laid out the difference between linearand exponential mindset and reframes the consequences for both businesses and personal development. The spread out of a pandemic was a display of exponential acceleration as we will see all around us in an era where not only technology is developing at exponential pace but also the worlds biggest problems. It is common sense that incremental change is not sufficient to not only design a desirable future but also deal with the inconvenient side effects of a crisis. Radical rethinking is not an overnight process, acquiring an exponential mindset is the foundation of the architects of our future.

CONGRESS FEEDBACK & IMPRESSIONS „This congress was BY FAR the best online conference I've been to. What is usually so confusing and mismanaged was very well executed by the WSA team. The WSA mentors have been a huge help as well, their networks and expertise are incredible. My pitching session with Caro Rossi was also amazing.“

„Quite honestly it went far beyond my expectations in terms of organization and management...and I had high expectations. The team did an outstanding job at every level and was able to overcome the challenges and demands presented by COVID. Tip of the hat to everyone for their work.“

„We are glad to report that we were thrilled by the outcomes of the Annual Global WSA Congress 2021 that we witnessed and we are very grateful for the glorious triumph that resulted from your work. From the start of the Congress, sitting in front of the wide screen in our apartment in Croatia we so enjoyed Peter’s magnificent introductions, insights, and guidance in what we were beginning to understand could be the beginning of construction of a Global stage that would inspire policy makers, university professors, innovative students and their mentors, from around the world via the flashes of insights, one after another, from testimonials given during the pitches from start-up companies.“
