WELCOME TO VIENNA

Vienna has been among the world’s most innovative cities for generations. Its strong welfare system, social housing for almost two thirds of the population, and the drinking water supply from the nearby mountains have worked reliably for decades thanks to sustainable planning. These accomplishments are just examples for the many social and technological innovations that enhance quality of life in Vienna every day, and have led to its worldwide reputation as a highly liveable city. To make sure Vienna remains a good place to live for everyone even as it continues to grow fast, we are already preparing the right framework conditions for the future: with a Smart City Strategy that focuses on social inclusion, responsible resource management, and inventing the future by investing in science and research. Dr. Michael Häupl, Mayor and Governor of Vienna

SMART | DIGITAL | SOCIAL – THE SOCIAL SIDE OF CONTENT DRIVEN TECHNOLOGY

WELCOME TO THE WSA GLOBAL CONGRESS IN VIENNA! Digital technology transforms society, but often not for the better, and surely not always with the intention to create a more equal, just and sustainable society.

WSA allows a close look at innovation and creative use of technology where digital solutions result in a positive social impact. WSA is a global magnifying glass. It focuses on content driven technology and high quality interactive content with a clear intention to create a more equal, just and sustainable society. WSA puts the best of digital content developers, most impactful social entrepreneurs, and the most creative solutions to the challenges of the globalized world onto the stage. Within the framework of the UN and its World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) process towards 2025, entries from 180 member states are selected, evaluated and juried on content quality, technology excellence, and their contributions to close digital divides and implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). By joining the WSA Global Congress in Vienna, you will meet the 45 projects and products, apps and solutions, which are the world´s best digital innovations creating sustainable so-

6

cial change and impact. An international jury has carefully evaluated them in a three-stage process. The WSA winners are impacting the daily lives of millions by meeting deeply rooted needs. They stand out in the combination of smart content, social aims and digital innovation, doing more than just providing means of communication and information. WSA winners are winners because they solve real problems. The WSA Global Congress allows exploring new ways of approaching education with AI technology, coding hardware and flipped classrooms from India, the UK and Mexico. A German solution shows how 3D printing can be used for organ donation. Digital Innovations for the blind from Sudan and Denmark are presented side by side with block chain business solutions from Poland and Canada. You can discover reinventions of culture and transformative labour market access solutions from South America. Smart products from Malaysia and Austria show how governments become more transparent and effective, while a solution from Ghana presents support for small farm holders. I invite you to engage, explore and open your mind through these three days. You will become part of a global network and community of

people committed to use digital technologies as drivers for the UN SDG’s. WSA has a proven record of accomplishment within the framework of the United Nations’ World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 2003-2025, mandated by the government of Austria since 2003 and implementing the 2005 WSIS Plan of Action. WSA is organised in collaboration with UN organisations such as UNESCO, UNIDO, UNCTAD, UNDESA and ITU. By building a unique global network of national experts, NGO’s, corporates, governments and other professional associations, WSA presents quality content and digital innovation from over 180 UN-member states and supports a global movement for sustainable digital solutions. In 2018, WSA conducts the Global Congress for the first time in Austria, on invitation of the City of Vienna, a perfect match for WSA. The City of Vienna pioneers providing smart digital solutions for citizens and visitors with a focus on social benefit, making it one of the world’s most liveable cities. Being a hub for start-ups and transformative environmental and infrastructural solutions, Vienna proves that a perfect symbiosis can be made of smart, digital and social. Smart, digital, social – WSA facilitates this Viennese symbiosis. We have aimed to build a

unique partner network around the WSA Global Congress, making the event the starting point for sustainable partnerships between Vienna and the participants from the global WSA network. The Vienna Business Agency provides a start-up package for one of the WSA winners to encourage that international start-ups also succeed in the heart of Europe. The alumni of the Social Impact Award by the Vienna Impact Hub will be connected with international mentors to support their ventures. The Umdasch Group uses their Research Prize to innovate their work through collaboration with start-ups. Finally, a hackathon at the end of the Congress will connect Viennese companies with you and international talents to come up with innovative ideas for their challenges. Please join me to thank all WSA Global Congress Partners for providing this unique stage to the most outstanding social entrepreneurs and creative teams. Engage, explore and share – smart, digital and social. I wish you great three days in Vienna. Prof. Dr. Peter A. Bruck Chairperson, on behalf of the WSA Board of Directors and the WSA Team

Today, the world has the largest youth population ever, with 1.8 billion young women and men across the planet. In many countries, young people face obstacles in engaging in productive activities leaving them vulnerable to social economic exclusion. Youth unemployment rates are significantly higher in most, if not all geographic regions. However, young people want to be actively involved in their communities and are ever more interested in making choices based on their ethical values. Many young people are actively seeking novel solutions to societal problems, acting as agents of innovation and change. To foster such development, international organizations, such as UNIDO, are helping countries to work towards increasing youth employability and providing them with the necessary tools to create and develop innovative and sustainable enterprises, ultimately empowering them to improve their livelihoods. Together, we can support our youth by building an enabling environment for the full realization of their capabilities.

The future is digital. Innovation, creativity and technical know-how are all important for shaping this future. Spaces where changes take place need to be purposefully used. Digitisation is a huge challenge for education systems around the world, and simultaneously it offers many opportunities for the future of learning. We are currently faced with the important task of equipping young people with the skills necessary to prepare them for future developments. The World Summit Award, now in its 15th year, honours innovative projects from young entrepreneurs around the world who are working towards creating a sustainable and digital future. I would like to warmly congratulate all this year’s winners, and to thank all the participants for their active involvement. An ancient Chinese proverb says: When the winds of change blow, some build walls, others build windmills. We are currently in the midst of such change. Technological developments revolutionize the way we live and work, the way we communicate, how we travel, how we learn, how fast we age and how healthy we remain. Digitalization thus gives us the opportunity to successfully meet some of the greatest challenges of the 21st century, but only if we take the chance and learn to build windmills. At our Ministry we are trying to shape and support digital development through the provision of the necessary digital infrastructure and the funding of technology & innovation, however, we know that we can only pave the way. It is smart, curious, dedicated people like the youngsters participating in the World Summit Awards who are the real game changers. These people with their impressing ideas and projects are the ones who truly enrich the future and make a difference. Norbert Hofer, Austrian Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology

PATRON STATEMENTS Preparing for the digital future is one of the most important tasks today. The internet expands new economic opportunities, creates jobs and connects people. Modern technologies offer big chances and require entrepreneurs to fully unlock their economic potential. The World Summit Award presents the most innovative youngsters and their outstanding digital projects from more than 180 countries, each with deep impact for improving our society. I would like to thank all participants and winners of this year`s Award for their courage and patience, working on new digital solutions for a better world. Dr. Margarete Schrambรถck, Austrian Minister for Digital and Economic Affairs

Why are we working together with the WSA? Because we are looking for precisely those companies to which the WSA has access: young, aspiring start-ups with fresh, digital ideas and technological innovations. We as a successful industrial group of companies will secure our continued existence only if we continually renew our approach and re-invent ourselves. This time we are also going to get our ideas and innovations from outside, through the Josef Umdasch Research Prize 2018. And of course we are very pleased to be doing this together with the WSA. Dr. Andreas J. Ludwig, Executive Chairman Umdasch Group

Vienna is a fantastic place to live and work. As the city grows, the chances and opportunities of the local population continue to improve. Vienna’s growth is built on a number of strong pillars, including the city’s high diversity of business structures, a strong education and training sector, excellent environmental quality and ample green spaces. Vienna is equally known to stand out by international comparison with its good public transport network, strong public housing sector, and generally available social services. Vienna is a city of science, research and development. By making targeted investments, the city ensures it will continue to play this role, and promotes innovative projects. With almost 200,000 students, 20 universities, a large scientific community and many research institutes, Vienna offers excellent conditions for future innovation and progress. At the same time, Vienna’s ICT sector is a force to be reckoned with, including plenty of innovative businesses and a strong startup scene. In brief: Vienna is a smart city. Its internationally unique Smart City Strategy protects and sustains the city’s high quality of life for the future – based on responsible resource management, social and technological innovation, fair opportunities for social participation, and excellent standards in services of general interest provided to the entire population of Vienna.

CALL FOR CUTTING-EDGE DIGITAL INNOVATION BY AUSTRIA BASED UMDASCH GROUP

As a successful group of companies with a history stretching back over 150 years, the Umdasch Group knows from experience that only permanent change and renewal will guarantee a continued existence. This applies all the more because digitalization is changing the world at breakneck speed and industry is undergoing enormous changes. So where will the new ideas come from? Of course from inside, but also more and more from outside. For example via the Josef Umdasch Research Prize 2018 – a newly formed partnership with WSA. For this year’s reward, the companies of Umdasch were looking for start-ups who develop innovative ideas or adapted version of already existing products for three specific challenges in the categories:

TECH ENTREPRENEURSHIP INITIATIVE MAKE-IT IN AFRICA We promote digital innovation for sustainable and inclusive development in Sub-Saharan Africa. In close collaboration with more than 20 corporate and financing partners, social enterprises, hubs and networks, ‘Make-IT in Africa’ supports an enabling environment for young entrepreneurs – to enable better access to finance, markets and skills. This project is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) as part of BMZ’s Digital Africa Initiative

KEY SECTORS OF MAKE-IT: E-agriculture solutions enable millions of small farmers to get better access to markets, weather data, finance and insurance. This creates income for the rural population. E-health solutions improve access to medical services and strengthen health management as a whole. This saves lives and reduces spread of diseases.

Smart energy solutions enable access to the internet, better use of renewable energies and infrastructure. This is the basis for economic development, finance, education and learning. Fintech solutions enable access to financial products for people with low incomes and in rural areas. This is a key component creating resilient economic structures.
