KEEPING IT LOCAL / BY EDOARDO CELA
SOME GUESTS COME TO MANDARIN ORIENTAL, LAGO DI COMO FROM THOUSANDS OF KILOMETRES AWAY; OTHERS, LIKE FLAVIO FARÉ, COME FROM NEARBY TOWNS AND VILLAGES JUST TO ENJOY A FEW HOURS OF REST IN A HEAVENLY LOCATION.
What is your favourite spot in Como? It’s easy for me to answer this question. “Stadio Sinigaglia”. In my career I’ve seen many Stadiums and Arenas, but none has had the position of the one where I work now, with my office facing the lake and at 5 minutes walking distance from city centre. From there you can easily walk to the new Lungolago, or from the Canottieri Lario take a nice stroll to Villa Olmo. Why have you chosen the Mandarin Oriental as one of your favourite spots on the Lake? Because of my work I was lucky enough to travel around the world. Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como is one of the best resorts that I’ve been to. The position, the restaurants, the services, the Spa, the floating pool on the lake, a boat taxi to Como. Thanks to all these facilities you can really enjoy the lake. If I need to relax, it's easy for me to spend a nice weekend with my family. However, I also know that whenever I have to organize a business lunch with people coming from Milan or even better with foreign clients, I’m sure that if I take them to Mandarin Oriental Lago di Como the contract will be signed.
A
s Marketing and Commercial Director of Como 1907, the official football team of the town of Como, Flavio Farè is a well-travelled sports executive with plenty of exposure to life’s privileges. Because of his job, he is a regular visitor of Como and has many occasions to visit the lake and its surroundings. Of the many places one could pick on and around the lake, Flavio has elected Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como as one of his favourite spots. At only 15 minutes drive from the centre of town, he claims it to be the perfect spot for a business lunch or a break in his busy work schedule. It is also a unique place to fully enjoy and take in the magical atmosphere of the lake and the surrounding mountains. We were lucky enough to meet Flavio on one of his visits to the hotel and asked him what he loves about Como, about Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como but also if he has some suggestions for newcomers in town.
Any other things to do and places to see or visit which you would recommend to guests staying at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como? There are so many unique places to visit in the area, but I think downtown Como is a must see. The Duomo, Piazza Volta and Piazza San Fedele (with his Basilica) and from there within a few minute’s walk, take the cable car to Brunate. Once at the top you’ll have a breath-taking and unique view of the lake. And If you still have time on your way back, I suggest taking a walk to Villa Geno. 8

EAST MEETS WEST AT LAGO DI COMO / BY GEORGE CHAFE ENJOY THE FULL RANGE OF TREATMENTS AND RITUALS AVAILABLE AT THE SPA AT MANDARIN ORIENTAL, LAGO DI COMO AND DISCOVER THE HEALING POWER OF THE QI.
A
breath of Qi (also known as Chi and usually translated as “breath” or “air”) arrives on the shores of Lake Como. The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como offers a number of treatments and rituals which bring together Oriental philosophy with a Western approach, aiming at achieving the perfect balance between mind and body. Oriental Qi is a traditional Chinese massage technique inspired by the five elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine (wood, fire, earth, metal and water). This therapy has been part of Chinese medicine for thousands of years and aims at promoting the overall health of the body by easing the flow of energy, or “qi”, around the body. Qi usually refers to the “energy flow” that is within every living organism. It is a holistic philosophy that permeates many elements of the Chinese culture also called “Wu Xing”, representing the fundamental processes of the natural cycle, including those governing the human body. As part of the Oriental Qi programme, our Spa offers 5 different treatments each lasting about 1 hour and 50 minutes.
THIS THERAPY HAS BEEN PART OF CHINESE MEDICINE FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND AIMS AT PROMOTING THE OVERALL WELL-BEING BY EASING THE FLOW OF ENERGY, OR “QI”, AROUND THE BODY.
Flourish (Earth), Release (Metal), Awaken (Wood), Bloom (Fire) and Reflect (Water)- all of them include an Oriental Qi Massage developed around your body’s needs. An effective and authentic spa experience, the treatment will start with a consultation where the Spa specialist will perform a detailed analysis to identify your current state and your dominant element. You will then receive indications on how to rebalance it with the rest of the elements in the body, in order to achieve harmony and well-being. Before starting the massage, our therapists will also submit you to a small test, a foot ritual and a body analysis: all details are relevant because every element has its own massage and essential oils. Following their treatment, our guests can relax inside the thermal area, designed to purify and nourish the body. In order to extend the benefits of the treatment, our Spa therapists will also provide the guests with specific advice to be followed at home. This relaxing, hands-on body massage ritual works on the energy of the meridians using the benefits of essential oils.
