MANDARIN ORIENTAL, MILAN JOURNAL
In this issue we aren’t only celebrating the beginning of spring, but also the numerous novelties which we have introduced at our hotel. April has always been a very important moment for our city as it becomes a global hotspot with the Salone del Mobile and all the numerous initiatives which surround the main event. For this reason, as part of our cover, we have chosen a shot from the Fornasetti suite, our very own interior design masterpiece, a space where the creativity of design meets the excellency of the Mandarin Oriental hospitality culture. We sit down with Rosanna Orlandi, one of the city’s key players in this field, who has won international recognition for her unique taste and sophisticated esthetic. Finally, we take you on a virtual tour of the Brera neighborhood which has always symbolized the creative heart of the city. We are also very proud to present to our readers the Mandrin Oriental, Lago di Como, a new property recently opened by our group. A magnificent hotel ready to be explored by our guests. Happy reading! Luca Finardi Area Vice President, Operations Mandarin Oriental, Milan Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como

SPOTLIGHT
The wonderful world of Rossana Orlandi
The space in Milan, bearing her name, is the mecca of design: crossing the threshold into Rossana Orlandi is like finding yourself in Wonderland, design oriented, of course.
Named the “Queen of Design” by Harper’s Bazaar Interiors – “I’m extremely flattered, but I’m shy and I get very moved” – Rossana Orlandi has exceptional intuition when it comes to discovering new talents – “I trust in the creativity of today’s young people, always more and more avant-garde” – with exquisite taste – she witnessed “the most beautiful years of fashion” as she loves to define them, “in which, in addition to the great haute couture creators, new talents were being born and their défilé were a burst of emotion” – and a concrete vision of “conscious consumerism”.
CYPRAEA COLLECTION, FUORISALONE 2019
Predicting trends: how do you do it? I would rather talk about the evolution of design; many international magazines have defined me as a “go-to pillar for avant-garde creations” and a “talent scout”. I love to discover and launch young talents from all over the world. Do you become attached to certain artists and projects? Yes, most of them call me “mamma”. I don’t just have a gallery, I have what many consider a home for design, where, with a lot of love and passion, true creativity immediately finds a place. Is design emotion or functionality? Both!

What relationship do you have with the the Icons? Do you feel like a guide to the new generations? Our teachers are our Icons, I simply seek out and encourage new talents.

At Rossana Orlandi true creativity immediately finds a home DINNER AT THE SHOP
Instagram and social media: how have they changed communication in the design world and what is your relationship with these new tools? Essential and extraordinarily useful, even if I’m aware that they can be dangerous in certain cases. Milan and design: places not to be missed? Triennale, Museo della Scienza e Tecnologia and I can’t not say Via Matteo Bandello 14, Rossana Orlandi. Is Milan still a design capital? MILAN IS THE DESIGN CAPITAL.
© GIANNI BASSO
How do you see Milan evolving in the near future? I really trust in our administration which, thanks to our mayor Beppe Sala, has contributed so much to our city, helping it become one of the most interesting in the world from many different points of view.
You mentioned a new era of conscious consumerism, what do you mean by that? We have to change our habits, eliminating the abuse and waste without going to Marie Kondo-like extremes. The focus for the next few years will be on sustainability, a topic that is close to your heart. Can you fill us in on any projects that you find interesting? The world is crying out for help and so I couldn’t help but give my contribution by getting the design world to start recycling plastic before it reaches the sea. Ro Plastic Prize is a competition open to projects dealing with recycled-recyclable plastic and Ro Plastic-Master’s Pieces is an exhibition at Milan’s Museo della Scienza e Tecnologia with original works by famous designers, artists and architects who are using recycled plastic for the first time. The exhibition runs from April 6th to the 14th. Will e-commerce ever take the place of your magnificent space? I wouldn’t say it could take its place, but it could be an important sales engine. Can you tell us what will happen to your space during the Salone del Mobile? This year, like never before, I’ll have exhibitors coming from all over the world with original and very interesting pieces.

MANDARIN OVERVIEW
Food for thought Our hotel is a culinary universe with a range of experiences capable of bringing joy to any palate. A microcosm which changes at every moment of the day, offering new experiences in a unique and exclusive setting.
THE MANDARIN BAR & BISTROT IS A SEDUCTIVE MIX OF DELICIOUS FOOD, BESPOKE COCKTAILS AND CONTEMPORARY DESIGN.
ONLY AT MANDARIN There are over a thousand labels from all over the world both at the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot and Seta restaurant but the two most particular and exclusive ones are: Evo, a blonde, light and gluten free craft beer, based on rice and malted barley, created in collaboration with the brand Hordeum, Agricultural Brewery of Novara. Second the house Seta Champagne, blanc de blancs, produced exclusively in France. “We purchased the entire production” explains Gussoni “and the customers are thrilled by it”.
“In our hotel, the Food & Beverage service is very extensive” - says Simone Gussoni, F&B Manager of the Mandarin Oriental, Milan “and is offered to our guests through different channels, including the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot, the Michelin starred restaurant Seta and room service, available around the clock. Our kitchen never closes, giving our customers uninterrupted excellency in service”. The Mandarin Bar & Bistrot is open every day from 6:30 am to 1 am, and it’s a dynamic space that changes over the course of the day to meet the demands of customers, who know they can always find great hospitality. The bistrot serves breakfast to both residents and external clients until 10:30 am. As the day progresses, the Bar & Bistrot evolves and it becomes the ideal location for business appointments and business lunches. The kitchen remains open throughout the day and in the afternoon, it offers a select menu, which includes exquisite Middle Eastern specialties. By 6 pm, as the work days winds down, it’s aperitif time at the bistrot. The atmosphere is always buzzing and on Wednesday nights the atmosphere is even more electric thanks to Alex Farolfi from Radio Deejay. “The essential cocktail? Obviously the Negroni” says the F&B Manager “every night the Negroni trolley is set up, which proposes one of the most loved Italian drinks in the world, prepared in front of the customer”. Starting in May, the fabulous internal court enriches the interior spaces of the bistrot. With its optical and modern aesthetics, the courtyard creates an intimate and refined atmospherewith warm lights and comfortable seating, reaffirming its refined Milanese soul.

MANDARIN OVERVIEW
World-class pastries
Nicola Di Lena, Executive Pastry Chef of the Mandarin Oriental, Milan gives us an insight into his world of sweet creations, exquisite both in taste and esthetics, which have earned him a prestigious award.
Nicola di Lena has been running the sweet side of two-starred Michelin chef Antonio Guida’s ventures for the past thirteen years and that is why the Michelin starred chef absolutely wanted him on his Milanese adventure. Trained at the Parisian three-star Michelin restaurant Epicure under the expert guidance of the famous Laurent Jeannin, by 2007 he was Pastry Chef at the Hotel Il Pellicano in Porto Ercole, and in 2015 he became a Executive Pastry Chef of the Mandarin Oriental, Milan. His creations are the ultimate expression of desserts interpreted in an Italian way. “I like to retrace and rework traditional sweets. My pastries are modern classics, that’s why I believe that the desserts at Seta (the two-star Michelin hotel restaurant of Mandarin Oriental, Milan) are those which best represent me”. Every day he surprises and delights guests with a rich variety of options proposal ranging from croissants and breakfast cakes to single portions served for lunch and dinner to bread and breadsticks prepared by hand for the complete gourmet experience.

NICOLA DI LENA, AWARDED WITH THE PRIX AU CHEF PÂTISSIER 2019.
Born in Switzerland, but raised in Puglia, Di Lena brings ideas and aromas from both these countries to his pastry shop: “ I lived in Switzerland until I was 6 and since I was a child I was attracted to butter, croissants and leavened cakes. Puglia has given me the love of almond, cherry and Altamura flour. I would also add a third culinary home, Sicily, where my mother was born and where I went to learn the art of pastry making from my uncle, who was also a pastry chef “. A successful career born out of a passion earned him the prestigious Prix au Chef Pâtissier 2019. “This is a milestone which is of great satisfaction for me and is the result of all these years of commitment and work” says the chef, “A result which would have been unattainable without my staff ’s help. My special thanks goes to them”.

Camilla Ancilotto’s Ab Ovo series dialogues with the contemporary environments of the Mandarin Oriental, Milan.
“The totemic figure of the Egg points at the creation/regeneration of the Universe”. AB OVO COCKTAIL
INGREDIENTS: VODKA, LIME, SPARKLING WINE AND 5 DIFFERENT COLOURED ICE CUBES MADE FROM DIFFERENT ALCOHOLS.
Available at the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot
Camilla Ancilotto’s Ab Ovo series comes from a deep and playful reflection on Tangram, the ancient Chinese puzzle that allows for the creations of thousands of figures starting from a few geometric elements. The works are made up of a series of sumptuous modular structures of various independent dimensions. First presented in 2017 at the Spoleto Festival Dei Due Mondi, the installations will mesh with their surroundings at the Mandarin Oriental, Milan, creating a connection and comparison between the ancient oriental tradition of the hotel and a contemporary artistic expression. The nine objects are either made of polyurethane and characterized by a lively energetic colour inspired by Feng Shui, or steel with a mirrored kaleidoscopic reflecting surface. In both cases, the objects have a strong linear rigor and fit elegantly into the sophisticated aesthetic language of the hotel finding an ideal location within the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot and in the adjoining courtyard. “The harmonious and dynamic balance at the base of the principles of Yin and Yang,” the artist explains “finds a happy expression in the game of Tangram, which I have proposed in zoomorphic forms, symbolic in Chinese culture. The number of elements in each work recalls the astrological and numerological origin of Feng Shui”. The works will be exhibited until June 8th 2019. THE STEEL STRUCTURES WERE CREATED IN COLLABORATION WITH POIGNEE ART.
THE ARTIST Camilla Ancilotto was born in Rome in 1970. In 1999, she obtained her Masters in Fine Arts at the New York Academy of Art. Her first pictorial-sculptural production was characterized by her research on multiple interactive shapes made of rotating parallelepipeds. In 2012, the monumental work Original Sin became part of the permanent sculpture collection of the Wolfson Campus (Miami Dade College). In 2013, she was one of the artists selected for the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. In 2017, she created the Ab Ovo series. In 2018, she was selected for the international festival Art Rooms Fair Rome. Subsequently, she took part in BIAS - Manifesta 12 (Palermo) and the Van Gogh Award - International Art Exhibition (Monreale), where she received the award for “the most innovative work” with Katharsis. Invited to participate in the 45th edition of the international Premio Sulmona, she won third prize with her work Nigredo.

Holistic focus
Be innovative, be inspired, be energized: this is the philosophy of the Mandarin Oriental, Milan which is applied to all aspects of the hotel, be it tailor made events or Spa proposals.
“A holistic and natural philosophy is the leitmotif of Mandarin Oriental, Milan which is apparent in every activity and every event we create”, says Michele De Feo, Hotel Events Manager. “It is not just about creating unique and authentic experiences, but they also must be in harmony with the Oriental heritage of the Mandarin Oriental group. Every event is designed exclusively around each customer, there are no ready-made packages, everything is tailor-made”. The brand-new initiative launched by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group is called Mindful Meetings and has a highly innovative approach to the business world. Conferences and meetings can be accompanied and above all enhanced by creative wellness solutions based on five key elements: Wellbeing, Movement, Stillness, Connections, Nourishment. The goal is to achieve better results with less stress and greater attention to mental and physical health. “We have created different mindful proposals and every meeting can be modulated based on multiple needs” concludes De Feo. “Wellness is an integral part of our identity” adds Anna Rita Di Giacomo, Spa Director of the Hotel “through our expertise we promote health in ethical terms”. Doppia Firma
A dialogue between design and artisanal excellence.
For the 2019 Salone del Mobile, the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship presents the fourth annual Doppia Firma: A Dialogue Between Design and Artisanal Excellence, in collaboration with the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte and Living – the Corriere della Sera magazine for interiors, design and lifestyle.

The selection was also made possible thanks to the Michelangelo Foundation’s network of European partners dedicated to fostering creativity and craftsmanship. For this 2019 edition, designers and artisans worked with a wide variety of techniques and materials including glass, ceramic, paper, porcelain, marble, wood, silver and brass to make original interpretations of functional or decorative objects.
The exhibition brings together innovative designers and master artisans from around Europe to produce a unique collection of 19 works and small-scale series. Each object is the result of a creative exchange between a designer/artist and an artisan/manufacturer – where project culture and expertise are cross-fertilised in an authentic expression of regional excellence. This year’s event focuses on the international dialogue between creativity and fine craftsmanship. Several of the works were commissioned specifically for Doppia Firma, while others were sourced by the project’s partners, who searched Europe for creations that embody the spirit of Doppia Firma. In just three years, Doppia Firma has emerged as a methodology and a mark of excellence. Now in its fourth incarnation, this event shines a spotlight on those who boldly choose to pursue a less prominent form of art or who espouse an artisan-friendly project culture,
