Milan is Fashion. Today as much as yesterday, Milan is universally known for its elegance. This can be seen through its buildings and their courtyards, but above all, the city has been a source of inspiration and home to numerous great fashion designers. In its mix of gusto and moderation, they found their place.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL, MILAN JOURNAL

Milan is the only European city to have its own fashion district: the Quadrilatero. Via Montenapoleone, Via della Spiga and Via Manzoni are where you can find the most exclusive high fashion boutiques in the world, but it doesn’t stop there. In this maze of streets, discover the city’s history and noble vocation through the house museums. These incredible gems once belonged to a few of the most important and wealthy families that made Milan what it is today. Thanks to its location right in the heart of the Quadrilatero, the Mandarin Oriental, Milan is the perfect starting point for a day of shopping, but it is also a private and exclusive haven. Take a break and enjoy an evening aperitivo in the shade of the inner courtyard’s portico, cocktail in hand and ready to relax. Some of the greatest designers, from Giorgio Armani to Dolce & Gabbana, found in Milan the perfect creative ambiance. But another illustrious artist, an undisputed international genius, made Milan his home for over twenty years and created some of his greatest masterpieces here: Leonardo Da Vinci. This year marks the the 500th anniversary anniversary of his death and while the city celebrates with events, exhibitions and installations, the Mandarin Oriental, Milan has come up with an exclusive tour revealing some of his most famous works and secret treasures. Happy reading! Luca Finardi Area Vice President, Operations Mandarin Oriental, Milan Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como

The Genius of Leonardo Artist, engineer, scientist, even winemaker. Leonardo da Vinci was all this and much more.

An undisputed genius with an eclectic and multidisciplinary mind, Leonardo was a master on a wide range of fronts and 2019 marks the 500th anniversary of his death. He was born in Vinci, a small town in Tuscany, but he spent almost twenty years in Milan. After arriving at the court of Ludovico il Moro in the Lombard capital, he devoted himself to painting and created one of his greatest masterpieces, The Last Supper, located in Santa Maria delle Grazie.

He also studied mechanics and engineering and so it’s no surprise that the city’s Museum of Science and Technology, which preserves his studies, prototypes and inventions, is named in his honor.

MANDARIN ONLY

It was during his period in Milan that Leonardo worked on decorating Castello Sforzesco. In celebration of his anniversary, the castle’s Sala delle Asse was reopened in May, displaying the impressive fresco designed as a trompe l’oeil that depicts an arbor of mulberry trees. Intrigued by the Navigli canal, he developed a system of locks to make them more navigable. He also devoted himself to winegrowing. Just a few steps away from the basilica that houses the Last Supper, you can find Leonardo’s vineyard. Designed by this true Renaissance man, it was the first vineyard in the city. After a long period of restoration, it is now open to the public.

SPOTLIGHT

To the Moon and Back In those few historic hours on the 21th of July, mankind stepped onto the moon and the world stood united together. Omega was there. On this golden anniversary of Apollo 11, Maison Omega is reliving that very first journey to the lunar surface and celebrating the moments, the people and the watches.

In 1964, NASA’s program office had gone in search of one watch that it could rely on for their all manned missions. Flight Crew Operations Director, Deke Slayton, issued a request for wrist-worn chronographs from different watch manufacturers from around the world. Several brands, including OMEGA, submitted their timepieces for the trials – but only the OMEGA Speedmaster passed the test.

BUZZ ALDRIN WITH PRESIDENT AND CEO OF OMEGA RAYNALD AESCHLIMANN

As a result, it was declared “Flight Qualified for all Manned Space Missions” on the 1st of March 1965. From that moment, OMEGA became the only watch provider for the NASA manned space program. It was a trusted companion of the astronauts throughout the Gemini program and eventually the Apollo program, which had its eyes on the moon. It was during this historic time that earth’s most famous chronograph - the OMEGA Speedmaster - became the first watch worn on the moon. By 1969, NASA had adopted the most recent versions of the Speedmaster, including the ST 105.012 and ST 145.012. It was these two models that were worn by the Apollo 11 astronauts during their mission. The Speedmaster became a part of the legendary story.

The NASA tests had conclusively demonstrated the Speedmaster’s robustness in all conditions: thermal tests (between 93° and -18° celcius), shock, vibration and vacuum tests amongst others. There were 10 different environments that were tested individually for the Speedmaster – and it passed every single one.

THE LAUNCH THE APOLLO 11 SATURN V SPACE VEHICLE WAS LAUNCHED INTO SPACE ON THE 16TH OF JULY, 1969 FROM THE KENNEDY SPACE CENTER IN FLORIDA. THE THREE ASTRONAUTS WERE COMMANDER NEIL ARMSTRONG, COMMAND MODULE PILOT MICHAEL COLLINS AND LUNAR MODULE PILOT EDWIN “BUZZ” ALDRIN.

11 JUNE 2019 - ISSUE 03

This year, the model has been specially reborn and has been revisiting that golden design with a Limited Edition of 1,014 pieces. It carries many of the same historical touches as the original, but also introduces some pioneering features of its own. The new chronograph was produced with Moonshine™ 18K, a unique gold. This new and exclusive alloy, inspired by the brightness of the moon, is a shade lighter than traditional yellow gold. It has greater resistance to discoloration over time and is brought to life by the new hand-wound Master Chronometer 3861 caliber. THE EVENT HOSTED AT THE KENNEDY SPACE CENTER IN FLORIDA. For the 50th anniversary, a special event took place at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to celebrate the moon landing and the re-edition of an icon. “Landing on another world was a huge achievement. I can’t think of a better reason to raise our glasses and toast”, stated Raynald Aeschlimann, president and CEO of OMEGA. Among the guests were George Clooney, OMEGA ambassador, and Lieutenant General Thomas Stafford, a veteran of 4 NASA missions and commander of Apollo 10, along with Charlie Duke, CAMPCOM of Apollo 11 and pilot of the lunar module for the Apollo 16 mission.

MANDARIN OVERVIEW

Al fresco

It’s finally time to enjoy the outdoors. As summer approaches, the Mandarin Oriental, Milan is opening its outside courtyard and has many special experiences in store for its guests.

Milan has a lot of hidden treasures and some of the most appreciated are the internal courtyards of noble apartment buildings in the city’s historical center. They are charming and quiet spots where stillness reigns among the porticos and fragrant gardens. The Mandarin Oriental, Milan is unique in its kind and boasts two elegant outdoor spaces. They each have their own unique character but share a similar taste in design and on the table. The first courtyard is the extension of the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot. With its casual and modern soul, this space has large, comfortable seating and soft lighting. It’s the perfect place for an aperitivo, served with enticing appetizers or even a light lunch, where you can choose from the new dishes proposed by Executive Chef Antonio Giuda. Take a break in the afternoon and enjoy haute patisserie with the unmistakable creations of Pastry Chef Nicola di Lena, who was awarded the prestigious Prix au Chef Pâtissier 2019. The courtyard comes to life on Wednesday evenings with a DJ set by Alex Farolfi starting at 6 pm and becomes the central point of a Milanese evening. In the morning, you can enjoy a simple and sweet or hearty breakfast under the shade of the portico. There’s no better way to start the day, flipping through the newspaper and getting ready for a full day of work or shopping.

The second courtyard enters into the realm of Chef Antonio Guida. This space is part of the Seta restaurant, boasting two Michelin stars. The atmosphere is elegant, timeless and full of magic. As night approaches, take a seat at one of the luxurious tables, adorned with white tablecloths and Fornasetti dishware. Let yourself be seduced by the original creations of the chef as tradition meets creativity in a continuous game of flavors and aromas.

Mandarin Oriental, Milan boasts two special outdoor spaces: one with a casual and modern soul, the other more elegant and full of magic

Crafted to perfection.

The Artist of Light

PORTRAIT

His illuminated sculptures are unmistakable and his pop art is for evryone: Marco Lodola tells us about himself through encounters, great masters and a healthy dose of self-irony.

“Today, everyone is an artist. Cooks are artists, stylists are artists”, and so, Marco Lodola doesn’t take himself too seriously when he defines himself as a “good electrician” for his use of light and neon in an original and unprecedented way. He was classically trained from his years at an artistic high school and the Accademia, which he insists must be emphasized. “I just want to say that I do have a license”, he throws out there. With an illuminated sculpture currently on display at the Arsenal of Venice as a part of this year’s Biennale d’Arte – “it’s the third time I’ve been invited to be a part of it and I’m very proud of this” – he is about to inaugurate a new work dedicated to Umberto Eco as a part of the Milanesiana festival in Alessandria, the writer’s hometown. “I worked with him years ago on an exhibition in Brussels called “Venere svelata”. Many artists were invited to interpret this work by Tiziano. I’m interested in the ‘open work’ concept: that in looking at a work, each person can give their own interpretation. For example, if I create something based on the theme of dance, there are those who simply see two dancers, those we see a sort of lightness or those who will see a way of celebrating life”. What meaning do your works have? I don’t have any profound messages and I’ve never understood why artwork can be a scandalous thing. After 30 years, you should be able to know what the meaning of life is, or lack of meaning, for some. It doesn’t affect me to see a crucified frog or a black Jesus. Painting doesn’t change people’s lives. It can move someone profoundly or make you think, but it doesn’t win wars.

Matisse, Depero and Fra Angelico: the three masters. I was lucky enough to have studied in Florence where you are constantly surrounded by beauty and culture. Fra Angelico’s gold backgrounds, colors and superimpositions were eye opening. I then started a group called Nuovo Futurismo (New Futurism), which was something along the lines of Marinetti, and I was most impacted by Fortunato Depero, the first Italian to go to America to work in advertising. He was a sort of Andy Warhol before “Warhol” even existed and his art was “contaminated” with other disciplines. A FEW OF MARCO LODOLA’S MOST FAMOUS AND REMARKABLE ILLUMINATED SCULPTURES ARE ON DISPLAY (AND FOR SALE) AT THE GALLERIA DEODATO ARTE. THE THREE LOCATIONS IN MILAN ARE IN VIA SANTA MARTA 6, VIA NERINO 2 AND VIA CUNEO 5. WWW.DEODATO.COM

Contamination is one of your most important characteristics. These encounters were enriching, a kind of school. I’ve collaborated with various musicians like Andy from Bluvertigo to Grignani. I’ve made covers, sets, the Ariston’s façade for Sanremo. Every now and then I play. I would have liked to be a musician but I wasn’t cut out for it, so I threw myself into watercolors. These collaborations fully satisfied my need to be part of the music world and create art that is for the people, real people, the ones on the street. You have a very personal style. Can it be limiting from time to time? I began as a painter. Then I started to paint plastic and discovered neon signs in bars and restaurants. I thought to myself, “they could become illuminated sculptures” and from that point, everything changed. I realized that up until then, nobody had ever used neon in that way. A critic once told me: “I don’t like your work but I never mistake it for someone else’s”. Maybe that’s the best compliment there is.

“Just like Fellini used to say: doing what you love is the real meaning of success”

Marco Lodola

A Combination of Excellence

MANDARIN OVERVIEW

After the Fornasetti suite, the hotel’s interior design masterpiece, the uniqueness of the Mandarin Oriental, Milan and Fornasetti’s creativity have given life to a new, one of a kind private dining room.

Crossing the threshold into Seta restaurant’s new private dining room is like entering into a wonderland of visions and fantasies made up of fish, bemused faces and colorful seascapes. All of the room decor, furniture, accessories and table art, are part of a custom made interior design project born from the creativity and wisdom of Fornasetti, historic Milanese design and decor atelier. In this exclusive space, which is possible to rent out for events or special occasions Fornasetti has worked out every little detail, but it doesn’t stop there. The corner furniture, a symbol of style and craftsmanship, was created for the Mandarin Oriental, Milan. They are custom-made pieces, handmade using artisanal techniques and are truly works of art. Decoration is transferred onto specially prepared lacquered surfaces before a further two layers of transparent lacquer are applied – a perfectly finished object is the end result. All vases, porcelain and decorating objects in the dining room are produced by Fornasetti in Milan. Thanks to the methods of production, no two objects are the same and slight differences will always be found. The exclusivity of the environment goes perfectly with the dishes of Executive Chef Antonio Guida for a triumph of taste, research and style.

THE ICONIC DECORATING OBJECTS BY FORNASETTI ARE AVAILABLE AT THE FORNASETTI STORE IN CORSO VENEZIA 21/A, MILAN.
