Milan calling. Up until just a few years ago, the city of Milan slowed down in August. Everyone left for their holidays, stores reduced their hours and the evenings were marked by unexpected silence. It’s not like that anymore: now the city comes alive with new life, a bit different from the rest of the year, but just as interesting. There are plenty of outdoor events, from cinema to concerts and cultural activities. More and more visitors, together with their families, are choosing Milan as a place to spend a few days on holiday. Enjoy the city and its wonderful hidden corners, such as our inner courtyard at the Seta Restaurant and Mandarin Bar & Bistrot. Come September, everything starts up again! The Formula 1 in Monza, women’s fashion week, events dedicated to music like the MiTo festival and new art exhibitions, like the one dedicated to De Chirico, which will be opening at the Palazzo Reale. The Sophisticated Eye of Guido Taroni Guido Taroni is a photographer with refined taste, heir to one of Milan’s most important families and a curious and attentive observer. Here, he shares the best things about the city he chose to live in, even when everyone else was leaving.
“I grew up in Como when it was still a rather quiet and less touristic place. I remember that I used to ride my bicycle around the shops, protected by the watchful gaze of all the older retired folks in town. When my mom took me to visit Milan, it seemed like an incredibly huge city. Then I moved here and began to perceive its energy. As I grew up, I felt like it belonged more and more to me.” Como and Milan are Guido Taroni’s places of the soul. In these two cities, he developed his talent for photography – first, as a self-taught young man, then as an assistant to his uncle, Giovanni Gastel, and finally as a photographer with a sophisticated style whose photos are published in the most important fashion and interior design magazines: Vogue Italia, Architectural Digest and Cabana Magazine, among others. Milan also preserves a more personal history – the story of the Visconti di Modrone family – one of the oldest families in Italy, from which Guido inherited his creativity, freedom of thought (his great-uncle was director Luchino Visconti) and an education to beauty.
What is your ideal itinerary? Above all, I love the architecture from the 1930s: the works of Piero Portaluppi – such as the Planetarium at the Porta Venezia Gardens and Villa Necchi Campiglio. I love the area surrounding Corso Matteotti, Piazza Meda with its Arnaldo Pomodoro sculpture. And then, of course, there is Piazza Duomo: every time I pass by, I am enchanted by the cathedral.

What are your favorite parts of Milan? I love Milan’s southern area, the Navigli, where I have always lived. My house is a former factory located in a park. It’s very close to the center, but it’s surrounded by water and nature. I find that there is just the right balance between the energy of the city and the quiet of the countryside. From here I can jump on my bike and get anywhere easily.

How has the city changed over the past few years? Today, Milan is fantastic because it has managed to give great value to its past by investing in its future. An example of this is the Porta Nuova area, which developed in the aftermath of the Expo. The skyscrapers of Gae Aulenti mix in with the old streets of the neighborhood. Today, the city has an international flavor, which was perhaps the only thing it was previously missing.

“In my photographs, I try to give the viewer the same emotion I feel the first time I enter into a house. I like to leave places as I find them, in order to portray their souls and that of their owners in my photos”. Have you ever thought about moving somewhere else? When I was eighteen, there was a moment – after I had finished an apprenticeship as an event photographer – when I realized I had to make a choice: leave to seek success abroad, perhaps as an assistant to some important photographer, or stay here and build my own career, one step at a time. So I thought, “Everyone is leaving, maybe it’s only right that someone should stay in Italy.” So I opened my own studio and I have never regretted it. As a photographer, what is your view of the world? I’m a constant observer. My gaze falls upon every detail, beautiful or ugly, and takes note of everything: the contents of a purse randomly peeking out, the deflated wheel of a bicycle, a particular suit, a shade of a color. All these images remain imprinted inside me and sometimes I find myself using them years later. In a work like mine, based on visions and aesthetics, I think it’s necessary to look, experiment and photograph as much as possible. It’s a bit like making a film: lights, costumes, music, images. Everything is connected. After all, it’s always about telling a story.

Ode to Summer The new signature cocktail of the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot sings of summer and was born from the partnership between the Mandarin Oriental, Milan and the tableware maison, Christofle.
It’s called the Christofle Freeze and its distinct freshness is its hallmark. “We wanted a drink that could go down easily at any time of the day, from the afternoon until after dinner,” explains Matteo Rizzolo, Head Mixologist at the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot. “We only used ingredients that would exalt freshness: from relaxing lavender that gives a slight floral note to rhubarb that adds acidity and quenches thirst to refreshing lime.” Together with a team of experienced mixologists, he developed a cocktail dedicated to summer, which in Milan can be really hot: a light pink color that is a mixture of Belvedere vodka, rhubarb cordial, lemon juice and 4 drops of lavender bitters. If the botanicals and aromas create the perfect balance, it is the glass that puts the cherry on top of this cocktail. All thanks to the collaboration with Christofle, French luxury maison and one of the world leaders in tableware production. “When we saw the new line of modern and refined glasses and bartending tools, we immediately threw ourselves into creating this new signature cocktail. Fresh, modern and pleasant to drink, just like the glass we use to serve it in,” says Matteo Rizzolo.

This museum is dedicated to the creative genius of Leonardo da Vinci and preserves some of his models and prototypes. It is one of the largest technical-scientific museums in Europe. It has many magnificent surprises in store for young visitors, including the famous Toti submarine. With its Night at the Museum, you can also visit the museum at night when it is closed and all the lights go out. Equipped with torches and sleeping bags that guarantee an unforgettable experience. If it’s the world of space that fascinates them, they will be enchanted by the Ulrico Hoepli Planetarium, located just inside the Public Gardens in Via Palestro. Perhaps not everyone knows that Milan is also home the small Acquario Civico (Civic Aquarium), located on the edge of Parco Sempione. The building dates back to 1906 and the aquarium is one of the oldest in Europe. Inside, children can enjoy spotting all the different aquatic species contained there. The Lego Store in Piazza San Babila is a necessary stop. This must-see store has toys for all ages where you can have fun creating and customizing the minifigures and buildings with the most famous bricks in the world. MUBA has been specially created for children. This center for development and the spread of cultural projects dedicated to children is located within the Rotonda della Besana. The interactive playful exhibition Nature is currently going on here. Children are able to play and discover nature with new eyes. They are stimulated to explore with curiosity and an attentive gaze upon the outside world. A trip to Milan isn’t complete without having visited the Sforzesco Castle. The city’s evocative fortification with its towers, dungeons and crenellations will inspire the imaginations of both adults and children.
