Take some time to discover Mandarin Oriental, Milan, our outstanding sister property located in the heart of the fashion capital, less than one-hour drive from us. Or, you can always opt to simply kick back, relax and enjoy the view, maybe after a visit to our Spa or a signature cocktail at sunset, and make the most of your time with us. Receiving a Michelin Star after only 7 months after opening. What was your secret? A Michelin Star changes a Chef ’s life, it shifts your visibility, it’s almost like winning football’s Champions League! Receiving this star, for L˜ARIA, represented such a big achievement for me. It wasn’t the first Michelin Star I obtained in my career, and I thought it would take at least a few years to get familiar with a new restaurant, a new location, a new team. But I guess hard work, commitment and passion are fundamental to reach every goal in life. Of course, in this case other key factors which contributed to the win are the highest quality ingredients, the flavor of the dishes and an interesting culinary vision. Do you believe in using only seasonal and local products for environmental reasons? How can a Chef of your standing contribute to safeguarding the environment? Whenever I can, I try to source my ingredients from small Italian producers that follow the principles of the Slow Food Movement, that is, providing healthy flavor to food which preserves local food culture while promoting sustainability and responsible consumption. Furthermore, we are currently working on expanding the resort’s herbal garden, including varieties of vegetables that I will be able to use in my culinary creations.

How does working at a world-renowned destination hotel like Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como impact your work? There are countless reasons why being the Executive Chef at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como has affected my life and my career. The most exciting aspect of my job is the opportunity to experiment with my ideas in an international environment, which gives me the possibility to be in contact with guests coming from all over the world. It’s a fair exchange because I have the priceless opportunity to help them fall in love with Italian cuisine and with my own culinary philosophy, while they share with me their experiences and views from far corners of the Earth. This also happens with other colleagues at the resort and from the Mandarin Oriental group. Did you know that Mandarin Oriental is the hotel group with the highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world? This reason alone represents a privilege for me and an exclusive opportunity for our discerning guests.

A DAY IN A LIFE / BY GEORGE LONGSHOT
W
hen creating unique moments for guests one must work with unique partners. Imago Artis has created a full-day excursion that allows you to live the best of the lake- both land life and lake life – and brings together two worlds which harmoniously coexist on and around the water. The day starts with a slow lakeside cruise, allowing you to see first-hand the natural landscape of the shores of the lake as seen from the water, and observe from close-up the picturesque fishing villages. Once in Domaso, a private transfer will drive you across the spectacular countryside to a wine estate for a guided wine tasting experience, as well as a visit to the cellar to learn more about the traditions behind wine making. The visit to the vineyard will be rounded off with lunch inspired by the local culinary tradition.
WHETHER ADMIRED FROM LAND OR FROM THE LAKE, LAGO DI COMO AND ITS SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE ARE AN EXCEPTIONAL SENSORY EXPERIENCE WORTH TAKING A DAY TO EXPLORE.
The second part of the day will see you back on board ready to explore the lower part of the lake: from enchanting villas to dreamy lake towns like Varenna or Bellagio – also known as the Pearl of the Lake. Those who are up to it will also be able to stroll around the unique lakeside villages, pay a visit to one of the splendid Villas or have a swim in the blue waters near the Comacina Island.

AN OASIS NOT A MIRAGE JUST OVER 100 KM FROM COMO, OASI ZEGNA IS ONE OF THE FIRST ITALIAN EXAMPLES OF CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY / BY LINDA WHITE
E
ven though officially created by the company in 1993, Oasi Zegna was always part of the original vision of Ermenegildo Zegna. In the 1930's, the founder of the world renown luxury group decided to give new life to its native town of Trivero, in the Alps around Biella, and started building houses for employees and other amenities for the local community. In addition Ermenegildo Zegna decided to implement a reforestation project for the surrounding mountain slopes with 500,000 pines, and built a road, dubbed “the Zegna Panoramic route”, so that locals and visitors could enjoy the natural mountain environment. Drawing on this heritage, the new generations of the family in 1993 initiated the Zegna Oasis project along the first 26 km of the “Panoramic Road”, covering an area of around 100 km2. The main goal of the Zegna Oasis, the first example of environmental patronage in Italy, is to maintain the presence of human beings in the mountain and to protect, safeguard and improve the area, through communication with visitors using innovative “visual alphabet” signs that describe animals, plants and minerals of the territory and illustrate local history, to better inform visitors and increase their awareness of the importance of respect for nature.
Members of our Fans of M.O. program will be able to enjoy a unique day at the Oasi. They will be picked from at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como and taken to Trivero for a visit of the wool mill and Casa Zegna. From there they will enjoy lunch at Bucaneve Restaurant - in the heart of the Oasi - and be driven back to Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como. Guests should book this experience a week in advance. Fans of M.O. is Mandarin Oriental’s one-of-a-kind, guest recognition program that offers privileges designed to surprise and delight when guests stay at properties around the world. To find out more about our classes and other unique benefits or to join the Fans of M.O. program please visit mandarinoriental.com/ fans-of-mo or scan the QR code.
The design of the Zegna Oasis as a communicating environment has been developed on two levels: the first is focusing on activities which are in direct contact with nature (ecological sports and soft tourism) and the second is the promotion of environmental education thanks to the Zegna Oasis Scientific Committee, chaired by ethologist Giorgio Celli, and the Museum of Natural History of Milan.

CESARE ATTOLINI / BY GEORGE CHAFE
WHERE
A
Tradition MEETS Modernity
n anecdote from the early days of Attolini says that in the 1930’s the impeccable Duke of Windsor - who was renowned for only wearing English tailor-made clothing - fell in love with a creation from Vincenzo Attolini while walking through the magical Piazzetta in Capri. The Duke was so taken back by seeing a gentleman wearing one of Attolini’s innovative designs that he stopped him to enquire about who was the creator of such an original and stylish garment. Vincenzo Attolini used to repeat to his admirers that a good tailor is none other than a craftsman who creates imperfect clothes for imperfect bodies. For the tailor this was not just an aphorism but the basis of his creative philosophy. By 1930 he had tailored a jacket with a line that had never been seen before and with unusual finishing details.

and constructing that jacket, as unique as it was innovative, which continued to achieve a new, enthusiastic following worldwide. The apple does not fall far from the tree and over the years Cesare, thanks to his entrepreneurial vision, managed to transform what was an artisanal workshop into a modern men’s tailoring clothing company, while keeping true to the values of craftmanship, innovation, hard work and impeccable quality which have been passed down the generations. The tireless pursuit of excellence means that today the sons of Vincenzo - Massimiliano and Giuseppe - personally select the best fabrics around. The choice falls mainly on Scottish, English, Irish and Italian yarns, from the highest quality wools to the purest cashmeres. But that’s not all. The colors and designs are made exclusively on their indication, so that the distinctive style of the Neapolitan fashion house is constantly refreshed. “In our work the essential drivers are quality of the fabrics and the cut. On closer inspection, perhaps, the secret of success is blending tradition and modernity, something which sounds easy at first but MY FATHER VINCENZO requires a lot of thought. The DARED TO QUESTION result of this synthesis is the balance and harmony which THE ENGLISH MODEL. one feels every time you wear HE MANAGED TO MAKE our garments.” THE JACKET AS SOFT AND LIGHTWEIGHT AS A SHIRT OR A CARDIGAN, INTRODUCING MANY OTHER TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS.
A garment that, during the sixties, was still considered unusual, took to the nineties to become part of a more established, sophisticated look. The item had a unique level of simplicity and was able to erase all the strictness of male elegance in an instant, making English clothing look like something out of the history books. Away with the padding, away with the shoulder pads, away with the linings. Only the essential remained, making the jacket as soft and lightweight as a shirt. So unconstructed that it could be folded in six, eight, ten. No tailor had ever been so bold in the previous fifty years. “My father Vincenzo dared to question the English model, setting a real revolution in motion. He managed to make the jacket as soft and lightweight as a shirt or a cardigan, introducing many other technical innovations. We have drawn on his teachings, ensuring that each of our jackets is always the most suitable for the contemporary lifestyle.” These are the words of Cesare Attolini, the most talented of Vincenzo’s six children and the one who, from an early age, worked alongside him at the tailor’s shop, learning the skilled techniques of cutting fabrics and the secrets of shaping 21

In addition, FAI has also been entrusted with the maintenance of the impressive gardens of the villa.
