Milan: at the heart of it all.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL, MILAN JOURNAL

Mediolanum is the ancient name of our unique city Milan. It means “at the centre of the plain or flat land” which is exactly what it is. As both visitors and locals know one of Milan’s most precious assets is its geographical location. Since the city sits at the base of the Alps, one can reach some of the most stunning ski resorts in the world within a few hours drive. In this issue we explore a few of the most renown and glamorous ski destinations. In a few issues from now, when spring comes knocking at the door, we will take you on a journey towards our lakes and the Med, which are even closer. Closeness and convenience are very important in our hectic everyday life, and this is exactly why we are happy to introduce the Hello MO service at our Milan property. Allowing us to be even closer to our guests, to help them relax and take full advantage of our hotel and our city. In order to do so please go to the final section of our Journal and take a look at our bimonthly agenda – On stage – to get a better perspective of the main events and cultural appointments for this season. Please enjoy! Luca Finardi Area Vice President, Operations Mandarin Oriental, Milan Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como

Suites that suit

A fusion of Milanese design elegance and timeless luxury with an oriental flair.

Located in four elegant, refined 18th century buildings, Mandarin Oriental, Milan offers five floors of guestrooms, suites and junior suites. Each room has a contemporary interior with various layouts and city views. Oak wood floors, walnut boiseries and bespoke pieces designed by Antonio Citterio grace the rooms. A color palette of beiges and purples create a contemporary and chic environment that is at the same time warm and welcoming. Mandarin Oriental, Milan offers guests a comfortable, stylish, glamorous and elegant experience. Every detail is thought out and utmost attention given to technology and functionality. Let’s focus on three beauties. Mandarin Oriental boasts two Specialty suites, situated on the hotel’s first and second floors. These gems are an expression of Milanese style and creativity and were created as tribute to two great design masters, Piero Fornasetti and Giò Ponti. The ad hoc design created by Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel consists of original elements and complementing furniture. Suites are divided into a living area, bedroom, master bath and separate guest bathroom.

THE FORNASETTI SUITE celebrates the artist’s exuberant creations. The atmosphere is sophisticated and utterly creative. The central pillar in the living area is covered in Fornasetti’s surrealistic wallpaper named Riflesso depicting a Baroque city scene. The eye-catching table and chairs are also masterpieces. A corridor furnished with the Architettura console table leads into a cozy bedroom decorated with the whimsical Chiavi Segrete wallpaper, a small table from his Farfalle collection and two large mirrors.

THE MAIN BATHROOM OF THE PRESIDENTIAL SUITE

5 FEBRUARY / MARCH 2020 - ISSUE 01

THE PREMIER SUITE is a tribute to Milanese rationalism and Ponti’s minimalist style. It preserves the soul of his works with pieces like Mangiarotti’s Eros table and the Sarfatti chandelier. On display in the living room is the original console table by Ponti, the Dezza armchair by Frau and furnishings based on Ponti’s designs. Navy fabrics in the bedroom match perfectly with the Catilina armchair by L. Caccia Dominioni.

And now, dulcis in fundo,

THE PRESIDENTIAL SUITE Located on the noble floor, lofty ceilings and great French glass-doors provide views of Via Monte di Pietà and allow natural light to flood in. Soft colors and rich fabrics make for a fabulous interior that reflects the Milanese aesthetic and adds an Oriental flavor. With a large bedroom perfect for unwinding, a spacious living area and private kitchen, state of the art technology, and wood floors and bespoke furniture, it is without a doubt one of the most beautiful suites in all Milan. The showpiece bathroom has Brazilian marble floors, a bathtub in the center, a private steam room and mood lighting

Bally is in the Haus

At the heart of Milan’s renowned golden quadrilatero district, on the corner of Via Monte Napoleone and Via Manzoni, Bally, the iconic luxury brand, recently unveiled its first Milanese flagship store. The Bally Haus.

Four floors which bring together all the key elements which distinguish this historic Swiss company, honouring all the brand codes which are aesthetically associated with Swiss excellence, are revisited in this new Milanese home. The brand’s new store design concept recalls Bally’s legacy and craftsmanship and is a clear tribute to the brand’s core Swiss pillars of art, architecture and the use of natural materials. With a series of cultural event programming and exclusive Bally Haus lifestyle merchandise, this flagship is set to become a true home for the brand. Designed by Casper Mueller Kneer Architects, the store develops over 560 square meters to combine Swiss and Italian hints. Starting with the raw materials of travertine and clay, the entrance evokes an artisan-laid Milanese courtyard, the composition of which was inspired by Swiss artist Paul Klee’s pointillism and abstract geometries, through the playful arrangement of stones. The internal tiledceramic façade reflects tiles from founder Carl Franz Bally’s original home in Schönenwerd, and a large beech wood table display in the centre of the space is inspired by a shoe-last. Large illuminated windows pay homage to the historic storefronts seen in photographs from Bally’s archive and reveal the store

interior onto the street with a sense of inclusivity and curiosity. As Casper Mueller Kneer Architects say “It was important for us to capture the qualities which Bally stands for: authenticity, honesty and craftsmanship. Our aim was to reflect these, while creating a sense of groundedness through the use of earthy, natural materials, which line the walls, form the floors, and are used to create display furniture.” On the first floor, where the emphasis is on menswear, one can experience a warmer, more private environment that reminds of a Swiss cabin, and is characterized by European oak and handwoven carpets that take inspiration from an archive shoe design. The second floor is the womenswear section where the mood shifts towards a more typical Milanese-style apartment, featuring herringbone parquet flooring and original windows that overlook the busy street below. Clay furniture is used for display in natural, earthy tones alongside fine stucco rendered walls and blush leather accents. Positioned at the centre of the fashion capital’s luxury district, Bally Haus is offers lifestyle merchandise available exclusively from the store, including stationary, tote bags and games.

Wellness: It’s mask time

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Milan continues to surprise guests and visitors by adding new treatments and new methodology to its bouquet.

“Preparing one’s skin for the spring is of upmost importance” says Antonio La Falce, founder and CEO of Hintime, one of the main players in the world of beauty treatments. A company which has based its success on scientific research, and whose long-standing partnership with our Spa, has proven to be very popular with both hotel guests and local residents. By visiting our Spa our Guests can experience first hand the effectiveness of Hintime treatments. One of the latest additions to the range of treatments available is the Hydra & Plump Mask. Our guests will be able to treat themselves to the pleasure and the enjoyment of this mask, which provides a deep cleanse and a strong éclat effect. Applied at the end of a busy day, the masque will reinvigorate one’s appearance, providing the ideal preparation for a night out with friends or a romantic dinner with one’s partner.

“Our commitment to providing the best possible care to our customers is of upmost importance to us, both for the repeat customers who live in the neighborhood, or for the occasional hotel guest” says Anna Rita Di Giacomo, Director of Spa & Wellness. “We keep track of our customer’s treatments and specific requests so we can provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to any treatment they require. This is true for both clients who come regularly to the Spa or for hotel guests who come maybe once or twice in the space of a few days. Our therapists, trained together with Hintime, have the specific know how necessary to advise our customers on the best possible treatment for them.”

17 FEBRUARY / MARCH 2020 - ISSUE 01

A MOMENT OF THE SKIN PERFECTION TREATMENT

The face masque is an entry ritual to the world of Hintime, whose sophisticated technology is available in our Spa. Skin Perfection and V Shape are two of the Spa’s most advanced treatments. The first is specific for facial treatments, while the second is targeted at removing our skin’s imperfection across the board such as remodeling of edematous cellulite or localized slimming. Thanks to the extensive training of our staff both these technologies are used to their full effect, guaranteeing outstanding results. Antonio La Falce agrees with Benjamin Franklin when he said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” In order to maintain a healthy and vigorous looking skin, without having to rely on plastic surgery, one has to start as early as possible. Effective but non-invasive treatments such as the ones available at our Spa are key to sustain the health of our skin, especially in those areas such as face and hands, which are constantly exposed to outside elements such as pollution or excessive dryness. With age our skin may start to show some signs of the passing of time as Antonio Lo Falce says “this is not unavoidable” .

Enjoying the Sease A brief encounter with Franco and Giacomo Loro Piana is more than enough to sense the passion that has driven these two young men to create a brand deeply connected to their heritage and their love of the sea, the mountains and nature as a whole.

Sease (which is a portmanteau of the words Sea and Ease) was founded only 4 years ago but has quickly gained relevance in the world of high-end apparel thanks to the founders’ ability to bring together numerous characteristics in their clothing and accessory offer. From functional and technical materials to high end sartorial fabrics, developed in partnership with what used to be their family business (their father Pier Luigi and uncle Sergio sold the Loro Piana company to LVMH in 2013), they have succeeded in creating a casual yet curated look relevant in numerous settings. As Franco says, “I created a brand which reflects my lifestyle and the outfit I need to live my passions”. All that is found in the Sease collection are products which the Loro Piana brothers have or could utilize in experiencing their daily lives. From outerwear designed to enjoy a sailing regatta, to technical yet sophisticated jackets suitable both on the slopes of the ski resorts near their hometown Milan, or in an urban setting. This passion for life and nature is duly reflected in the deeply sustainable core of their brand. All processes within the company are executed with the outmost care of the environment.

The love and respect of nature are in fact long-standing traditions in the Loro Piana family. As Giacomo points out even their grandfather, Franco Loro Piana, who founded the Loro Piana company in 1924 , was already thinking about protecting the environment, when building the renowned luxury company almost 100 years ago. Sease is much more than a brand, it’s the entry portal to a way of life which is embodied in the company’s flagship store, at the heart of the Brera district in Milan. Two floors which bring together a variety of worlds.

On the first-floor the center pieces are an outstanding vinyl collection, a full scale DJ console, high quality speakers and a very comfortable sofa area. Stepping it up Becoming Seta’s Manager was already a great achievement, but with the new year Manuel Tempesta is pushing the bar up a level and is now ready to take over all the Food & Beverage outlets of Mandarin Oriental, Milan.

As soon as Manuel joined Seta in 2015 it was clear to all those on his team that Manuel was a rising star. His ability to manage his team, while satisfying Guests and building a strong relationship with our Michelin stared Chef Antonio Guida, was key in determining his growth within our hotel. Starting off as Assistant Restaurant Manager at Seta in 2015 Manuel quickly rose through the ranks and in 2018 was appointed Restaurant Manager. At Seta his aim was always to deliver a distinctive and memorable experience to Guests, with whom he has built a professional yet friendly relationship over the years. His progression to Manager of all the food outlets in our hotel, which include the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot and Inroom Dining, seems a natural step forward. Customers and staff are accustomed to his expert yet approachable style of management and will welcome his presence beyond Seta, into other areas of the hotel.

ANDREA LOI, LUIS DIAZ, MANUEL TEMPESTA, FEDERICO PAOLELLA, MAURO SCIALFA

His passion for the industry and his ability to create strong and motivated teams are one of Manuel’s most striking characteristics. In fact, he has made it a point to redesign the team to reflect his management style and allow him to achieve his goals. At our Seta restaurant Manuel Tempesta has brought back Luis Diaz as Assistant Restaurant Manager and has promoted Mauro Scialfa to Senior Assistant Restaurant Manager. They form, together with Andrea Loi, our Head Sommelier, and Federico Paolella, maitre d’hotel, a dream team which will work closely with Chef Antonio Guida
