From all of us here at Mandarin Oriental, Milan a long and appreciative smile to welcome you back into our hotel, be it if only for dinner or drinks for now. As Europe starts to raise its head - after a period of pause we at Mandarin Hotel, Milan could not be happier to finally reopen the doors of one of our most treasured properties and host you at one of our world renown restaurants or in our very Milanese courtyard.

In response to recent events, our group has put in place the WE CARE program, to further safeguard the comfort, health and safety of guests and employees. With the help of Lloyds Register, an internationally recognized independent assessor, new protocols are now in place and constantly monitored, to make sure our guests can focus on enjoying themselves, particularly when spending time with us at Mandarin Oriental, Milan.

While enjoying an aperitivo in our courtyard, or dinner and drinks at Seta or our Mandarin Bar & Bistrot, take time to read through our Journal. It will give you an insight into some of the key people that bring Mandarin Oriental, Milan to life , or it will help you find out about the main cultural events happening in the city this summer in our extensive “What’s On” section, or introduce you to some of Milan’s finest international residents, who can give some understandings into why they love this city and choose to call this very special city home. MANDARIN WORLD BY GEORGE LONGSHOT
Urban paradise Walking into Mandarin Oriental, Milan is like walking into an oasis of peace and tranquility, conveniently situated at the heart of Italy’s most fervent city. A place to enjoy a romantic dinner with someone special, or long evenings sitting outside enjoying great wines in good company.
A hotel is by definition a sanctuary, a space which offers its visitors a renewed and neutral place to relax and rebuild. During the summer months, when Milano’s habitual hustle and bustle is replaced by a calmer pace, dictated by warmer temperature and the longer days, Mandarin Oriental, Milan becomes the ideal spot to kick back and enjoy the newly found rhythm. Once inside the gates, guests will be able to enjoy the numerous culinary experiences offered by the hotel, as well as aperitivos and evening drinks in the courtyard. For the summer months Seta, the two Michelin starred restaurant by Antonio Guida, offers two tasting menus; La Via del Seta (Seta’s Way) and Un’ Estate a Milano (Summer in Milan) as well as a la carte dining and an extensive wine selection, all enjoyable also while sitting in the inner courtyard of the hotel. Antonio Guida masterfully brings together his southern Italian heritage with the cooking legacy of Tuscany and France, creating a contemporary interpretation of the best Italian culinary tradition. You can read
all about it in his new book La Cucina di Antonio Guida (Antonio Guida’s Cooking). The beating heart of Mandarin Oriental, Milan is the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot. With its multifaceted personality and the variety of spaces it occupies. This Milanese institution is the perfect spot to live a few hours of tranquility, alone or in the company of friends. Catering to the city’s discerning style crowd, Mandarin Bar & Bistrot enjoys a relaxed atmosphere with three distinctive areas; the bar bistrot, an inside lounge and an outside courtyard area featuring lounge sofas, tables and soft lights ideal for any moment of conviviality.

To celebrate the hotel reopening its doors to overnight guests, starting in September and through March 31st, 2021, Mandarin Oriental, Milan offers its guests a unique staycation program. Guests can check-in early, enjoy an exquisite breakfast, and leave the next day feeling relaxed and refreshed, also thanks to the late check-out. OUT AND ABOUT BY KIRSTEN NICOLE GROVE
Fans of Milan
While walking around the manicured and world renown streets of Il Quadrilatero della Moda, it’s hard to imagine Milan was one of the hotspots of the recent global health scare.
When the city went into lockdown in March this year it was coming out of a period of unprecedented global desirability. The economy was booming, cultural life was buzzing, foreigners were moving in, and the city was regaining its position as one of the leading capitals of the world. As Milan proudly raises its head, we bring you some love notes to the city. In particular we express our love to the city using the words of Kristen Grove, a de facto Milanese, a recognized and appreciated entertainment personality and branding expert, who speaks to us and to some of her friends about her love of the city and why they elected it their home.
KRISTEN NICOLE GROVE PLACE OF BIRTH: USA PROFESSION: CEO HEAVEN COLLECTIVE, GLOBAL BRAND DIRECTOR AT CORE: YEARS LIVING IN MILAN: 20 IS THIS YOUR HOME: YES WHAT YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT MILAN: IT’S COZY SIZE, IT’S GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION RELATING TO THE REST OF EUROPE, IT’S CULTURAL COMMUNITY EVENTS
But here and there someone would lean in and tell me to be patient. Milano’s treasures are for seekers. “Milano non è una piazza, è un salotto” they would say. Milano isn’t a plaza, it’s a living room. Meaning you’ve got to be invited into tight circles to uncover this hidden and intelligent city, rich with talent and culture. I began to understand that commenting on my ‘smiling too much’ wasn’t to chastise my inherent American optimism but instead was an invite to temper my superficiality and hone my sensibility to an ethos and a culture that only hands itself over to deeper, more sincere connections. As I synthesized new ideas, Milano’s eclectic individuals, remarkable, yet often hidden, art and architecture, exceptional food and delirious aperitive I was able to reinvent my first impression of the city. As I refined my vision, Milano became my beloved second home. I evolved into the person I am today
PHOTO: SETTIMIO BENEDUSI
Please be seated, I am going to praise a city that I have spent years complaining about. When I moved here the first time it was to be closer to the television studios where I recorded every day, to be closer to an international airport and, hence, the rest of the world. When I arrived, it felt like a closed and cold city, certainly not an internationally relevant metropolis. I remember being chastised for smiling too much.
precisely because Milano was not an open book. But, over the years, Milano has begun to grow and open in perfect step with its own confidence and timing. The ‘salotti’ have been slowly opening as the city reclaims more public spaces where culture meets the larger community. Milanese can now be seen spilling out across gardens and piazzas during the famous Piano City or opening their homes for live poetry reading during Book City. Milano remains a beautiful oxymoron to me, my ‘cozy metropolis.’ It retains all of the advantages of living in a large cosmopolitan city like New York or London, but its scale makes it feel more like a borough of one of these megacities. In Milan you can cross the city in 15/20 minutes if you are willing to take the underground or one of the many shared motorbikes / bikes and scooters.
After a long period of hibernation, the Expo of 2015 gave a new impetus to the city. It is as if the city wholeheartedly accepted the opportunity to be reimagined and reinvented. All aspects of civil society continue to expand and innovate so much that I now live in a city that is taking back its place as one of the beating hearts of Europe (if not the world). Milano remains my home because it evolves and changes like nature, and anywhere that is blooming is a beautiful place to be. Over the years living in Milan I have built a large network of international friends who like me - choose to make Milan their home.

Here I asked three friends and fellow women expats to write a few lines about why they now call Milan home. Each wrote a love letter to the city. A unique & strategic geographical position There are many characteristics of Milan I find exceptional. I live here since 1997. Up to 2000 the city had a charming provincial elegance. Since 2015 - following the Expo the city acquired a much more international aura, making it even more attractive. The city has many other “gems”: a unique & strategic geographical position; its intimate dimension and Milano Design Week which literally transforms the city into an ultra-hip global capital for a week every year oozing Italy’s finest design & stylish ‘dolce vita’ with an international vibe.

This incredible city means a lot for me with its modernity that perfectly coexists and feeds from its history and traditions. The city is a sort of ecosystem in which I find many inspirations that fuel my desire for creativity and add value to the projects we are working on. I feel the dynamism and energy of a European city and, at the same time, the warmth of the neighborhood where I live. Milano is a human-size city with perfect European location. It is the city that still manages to surprise me and, as an architect I couldn’t think of a better place to have my base. It is a place where people come from everywhere where I really feel comfortable and somehow represents the center of my world. I’m proud to be part of incredible Milanese projects that add stimulus and quality. Being also a mother of 2 children, I am very grateful for what Milan offers to families and I appreciate how easy it is to get to various places in a short time. I find Milan an extraordinary city. I have lived in Madrid, New York, London and Rome, which are incredible cities for different reasons. What I find compelling about Milan is its elegance and its proportions. The city has a wonderful sense of balance between heritage and the forward-looking attitude of the Milanese. Its beauty is not revealed at first glance. Milan is like its buildings, strong, reserved and austere. However, if you enter the courtyard, you soon discover a world that is hidden in gardens and majesty.

Five is the magic number
A few words with Luca Finardi, Vice President of Operations in Italy for Mandarin Oriental as well as General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Milan, to mark the 5-year anniversary of the group’s presence in Italy.
It’s five years since Mandarin Oriental first opened its doors in Milan. Two years since the opening of Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como. In a very short period both hotels have become iconic properties. Be it locals or visitors, everyone who visits the hotels becomes a fan. What is the secret recipe? We talk about it with Luca Finardi who has been with the group from day 1 (and before). What do you think are the most unique characteristics of the Milan and Como properties that have made them such a success?
I believe that both properties give an unforgettable experience to our clients, locally and internationally, the sensation to stay in a cosmopolitan place but strictly connected to the place where they are located and to its “genius loci”. Mandarin Oriental, Milan reflects the taste and the style of the city’s aristocratic private palazzos and Mandarin
Oriental, Lago di Como is the brighter example of a retreat nestled in a lush garden by the lake: for sure the perfect Italian dream. 5 years seems a short amount of time to establish a leading position for a hotel in competitive markets like Milan and Como. However, Milan has probably evolved more in the last 5 years than in the two decades before. Was the opening of Milan in 2015 a stroke of luck or a strategic decision which paid off? Did this trend benefit Como too.
For Milan property, both of them: strategic and lucky. When we found the perfect place to house Mandarin Oriental, Milan, we worked very hard to be ready on time for the opening in July 2015. The connection between the new awakening of the city and the opening of the first Mandarin Oriental hotel in Italy has created an incredible energy in the travelers’
13 SUMMER 2020 - ISSUE 02
community, Milanese people and colleagues. It’s been fantastic. This trend benefits the property on Lake Como as well, a place which means “the perfect Italian escape”, a fantastic resort, connected with its sister property in Milan. One of our best selling packages is called indeed “One Trip, Two Destinations” because it gives our clients the opportunity to spend two nights in Milan, combining its cultural venues, its lifestyle enriched by the greatest design and the best fashion names, and two nights at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, where visiting beautiful villages, exploring the lake by boat or just relaxing in our floating swimming pool with breathtaking views on the lake.
One unique feature of both properties is that even if operated by an Asian Hospitality group both properties are in some quintessential way highly identified with their geographical location. A sought-after characteristic or an afterthought?
Definitely, a sought-after characteristic. To be a Mandarin Oriental hotel means to guarantee all over the world the highest standards of service and the best offer in terms of accommodation, food and wine proposals, and wellbeing. But it’s very important to us also giving a soul to our hotels, thinking of them as ambassadors of the place where they are located.
Both hotels have recently reopened after hitting pause for a few months. Apart from facing the obvious challenges of the near future any long-term plans for Mandarin Oriental in Italy?
We are always in search of wonderful properties in Italy to enrich our portfolio in this beautiful Country.
So...stay tuned!

For a special treat, “The Most Romantic Aperitivo” is a private sundown boat cruise from Como city center to the resort, paired with delicacies and original cocktails. Once at the resort guests can indulge in a delicious dinner signed by Chef Vincenzo Guarino, whose new menu, inspired by high-quality ingredients, is a true itinerary through the best of Italy’s gourmet traditions, from creative home-made pasta, to refined main dishes and signature pizzas. Exceptionally during the summer months Milan’s notorious Langosteria restaurant will have its pop-up at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como. Immersed in the resort’s lush botanical garden, with a magnificent view on the lake, Langosteria Lago di Como will be an exceptional outdoor gastronomic experience, thanks to the uniqueness of the location and the sophistication of its culinary offering. The menu consists of dishes created specifically for the pop-up, accompanied by signature dishes like oysters and other crudi di pesce

Over the summer months and into the fall, CO.MO Bar & Bistrot will also be hosting a series of special evenings dedicated to the sophisticated art of mixology, where Bar Manager Luca De Filippis will host some of the leading Bartenders in Italy.
