As Milan gradually refinds its balance - after a long period of pause - we at Mandarin Oriental, Milan are extremely happy and proud to have our guests back in our restaurants, our Spa and in our rooms and suites. As the long summer days give way to the more somber lights and colors of autumns, our inner court remains a magical place to spend time with friends and business associates while enjoying a cocktail or glass of wine from our Mandarin Bar & Bistrot.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL, MILAN JOURNAL
On the subject of wine, if you are lucky enough to be in Milan in early October you will be able to experience The Vendemmia di Montenapolone, a week-long event during which two worlds, those of fashion and wines, are celebrated in the unique setting of the Quadrilatero della Moda. You can read about this exquisite Milan moment while browsing the pages of this issue of the journal. A topic which has always been the focus of great attention at Mandarin Oriental is that of health and safety. We pride ourselves of the level of care we put in preparing our rooms and common areas to welcome our guests. At this moment in time this is obviously even more important and in this issue of the journal Francesco Frattari Director of Housekeeping will walk you through what has been done and will keep on doing to safeguard our guests and staff alike.
While I hope to meet you in person in the lobby or in one of our restaurants, I take this opportunity to welcome you once again at our hotel and encourage you to try our 2 Michelin starred restaurant Seta, to taste the exceptional cuisine.

Margaret Bourke-White in Milan
The Comune di Milano and Contrasto have come together in the unique setting of Palazzo Reale to present a new selection of extraordinary images by Margaret Bourke-White, one of the most representative and emblematic figures in photojournalism. The exhibit brings together the photographs of the artist and a series of personal documents, images, videos and autobiographical texts, shedding some light on the life, vision and personality of this important photographer and outstanding female artist.
A pioneer in the world of information and imagery, Margaret Bourke-White explored every aspect of photography: the first images portray the world of industry and corporate projects; the great achievements for major newspapers such as Fortune and Life; the visual chronicles of the Second World War, the famous portraits of Stalin first and of Gandhi later (who she met during her reportage on the birth of new India and portrayed shortly before his death); South Africa’s apartheid; America’s racial issues; the thrill of the aerial visions of the American continent. Visitors will be able to admire over 100 images, from the archive of Life New York, divided into 11 themed sections - The fascination with steelworks, In the “Dust Bowl” , Life, Eyes on Russia , On the Forgotten Front, In the Camps, Gandhi’s India, South Africa, Voices of the White South, Up high and at home, “My mysterious malady” - which, in a chronological view, trace the thread of the existential path of Margaret BourkeWhite and show her visionary and narrative ability, able to compose dense and dazzling photographic “stories”.

The exhibition is part of “I talenti delle donne”, a yearly program promoted by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Milan dedicated to the universe of women. “I talenti delle donne” wants to make the general public aware of how, in the past and in the present - often in adverse conditions - women have been and are creators of original artistic expressions as well as of social instances of change. The aim is to enhance the contributions that over time women have made and offered in all areas of collective life, starting with cultural life but also in the scientific and entrepreneurial sphere, to the progress of humanity. The objective is not only to produce new levels of awareness of the role of women in social life, but also committing to pursue the principle of fairness and equal opportunities which, from our Constitution, should be transferred into everyday representations and cultures.

PORTRAITS BY EDOARDO CELA
Michela Proietti on her book La Milanese
An insight into styles and fixations of the contemporary Sciura (dialect for Milanese lady) and into what makes her a symbol of Milan, admired and envied across the world.
“I started working on the book about eight years ago, when I was pregnant with my son, but then work and life got in the way and I never finished it. I decided to bring it back to life and complete it at the end of the months of lockdown, as a homage to Milan. Seeing how this marvelous city, which has welcomed so many - including me - was being portrayed by the press and social media, pushed me to do something about it, to express to the world how special the city is. I did it by ironically narrating the life and habits of one of the city’s most coveted and emblematic heroes; the Milanese. A mother, career woman, stylish, sophisticated, passionate and curious lady who lives in Milan and wanders the city’s most fashionable streets.” Michela Proietti is herself a Milanese. As many who proudly wear this badge, she was not born in Milan, but she has made the city
her home and has built her life here. As a career journalist, with 20 years experience at Italy’s leading newspaper, the Corriere della Sera, she knows about writing. She has also travelled the world and experienced firsthand how, from LA to the Far East, people have admired her style and looked up to her. She is also a mother and something of a social butterfly, living the frantic yet glamorous daily life of La Milanese. Her profile ticks all the right boxes. The book gives the curious reader an opportunity to look into that world or for those already acquainted, splashes the canvas of the city with an ironic interpetation. The success of the book and the preface by Lina Sotis, who was a mentor to Michela Proietti,
and is herself an author and one of the most renowned columnists and journalists in Italy, has put Michela Proietti on track for an even brighter future in the world of journalism. La Milanese is currently only published in Italian, but discussions for a translation are on the way, and is available at major brick and mortar and online bookstores.

We always cared, now even more!
Mandarin Oriental, Milan - and the whole group - have stepped up all sanitation measures to face the challenges brought about by the current global situation. The aim is to safeguard to the maximum the health and well-being of both customers and staff members.
We talk about it with Francesco Frattari, Director of Housekeeping at Mandarin Oriental, Milan, who – with more than 20 years in the business of housekeeping - is considered one of the leading European experts on this topic, as well as housekeeping in general. “I am very lucky because Mandarin Oriental already had extremely effective cleaning protocols in place, well before the current situation emerged. This made it much easier for me to implement a greater degree of sanitation in the rooms once the need arose. Our rooms have always been disinfected prior to the arrival of new guests. The key difference between then and now is that what was previously done as a sign of respect towards our guests, is now carried out scientifically to protect the health of all people coming in and out of the hotel, clients and staff alike.” Francesco has not taken the responsibility lightly and has been very thorough in preparing himself, the rooms and the staff alike, to tackle this health emergency head on.
“At the beginning of the emergency, once we decided to close the hotel down, we had to prepare it for its first (and hopefully last) “seasonal closing”. Meaning shutting rooms and common areas down in a way to facilitate the reopening, with no idea of when this was going to happen. My priority at that stage was to sanitize all rooms thoroughly while making sure that the materials used to clean would not damage any of the furniture or linen, or any other of the precious fabrics in our hotel, all this while always keeping the safety of my colleagues at the forefront of my mind”. As Milan experienced the peak of the emergency Francesco was at home keeping himself busy by studying the subject matter and making sure he would be ready for the reopening. Like many other hotels in the city Mandarin Oriental, Milan opted for a staggered opening. Meaning at first the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot
21 FALL 2020 - ISSUE 03
and Seta restaurant was open and then in a second moment the rooms and the Spa where open for guests. While the first phase of the reopening saw Francesco active in preparing the hotel’s common parts, it’s the second phase that was and is more challenging for him and his staff. As guests check in and check out and staff move around the floors to service the rooms, he must be very alert in implementing the necessary protocols to safeguard all these people. Mandarin Oriental, Milan stricly adheres to Italian protocols of health and safety connected to the current situation and Francesco and his colleagues have gone out of their way to ensure that these protocols are followed by the book so as to minimize any risks for anyone spending time in the hotel. Mandarin Oriental has also hired an external company to both monitor the implementation of these protocols over time and to ensure that nothing is left out, even if this means having rooms empty in the hotel, to ensure enough turnaround time between guests coming and going.
One thing is certain: if every staff member in every hotel of the city would be as passionate about this subject as Francesco Frattari, we would all live in a much healthier environment.

Cesare Attolini
An anecdote from the early days of Attolini says that in the 1930’s the impeccable Duke of Windsor - who was renowned for only wearing English tailor-made clothing - fell in love with a creation from Vincenzo Attolini while walking through the magical Piazzetta in Capri. The Duke was so taken back by seeing a gentleman wearing one of Attolini’s innovative designs that he stopped him to enquire about who the creator of such an original and stylish garment was.
Vincenzo Attolini used to repeat to his admirers that a good tailor is none other than a craftsman who creates imperfect clothes for imperfect bodies. For the tailor this was not just an aphorism but the basis of his creative philosophy. By 1930 he had tailored a jacket with a line that had never been seen before and with unusual finishing details. A garment, which during the sixties was still considered unusual, took to the nineties to become part of a more established, sophisticated look. The item had a unique level of simplicity and was able to erase all the strictness of male elegance in an instant, making English clothing look like something out of the history books. Away with the padding, away with the shoulder pads, away with the linings. Only the essential remained, making the jacket as soft and lightweight as a shirt. So unconstructed that it could be folded in six, eight, ten. No tailor had ever been so bold in the previous fifty years.
unique as it was innovative, which continued to achieve a new, enthusiastic following worldwide.
BELOW: DETAILS OF A CESARE ATTOLINI. MASSIMILIANO AND GIUSEPPE ATTOLINI TOGETHER AND MASSIMILIANO ALONE AT WORK IN THEIR ATELIER.
The apple does not fall far from the tree and over the years Cesare, thanks to his entrepreneurial vision, managed to transform what was an artisanal workshop into a modern men’s tailoring clothing company, while keeping true to the values of craftmanship, innovation, hard work and impeccable quality which have been passed down the generations. The tireless pursuit of excellence means that today the sons of Vincenzo - Massimiliano and
“My father Vincenzo dared to question the English model, setting a real revolution in motion. He managed to make the jacket as soft and lightweight as a shirt or a cardigan, introducing many other technical innovations. We have drawn on his teachings, ensuring that each of our jackets is always the most suitable for the contemporary lifestyle.” These are the words of Cesare Attolini, the most talented of Vincenzo’s six children and the one who, from an early age, worked alongside him at the tailor’s shop. Cesare learned the skilled techniques of cutting fabrics and the secrets of shaping and constructing that jacket, as Giuseppe - personally select the best fabrics around. The choice falls mainly on Scottish, English, Irish and Italian yarns, from the highest quality wools to the purest cashmeres. But that’s not all. The colors and designs are made exclusively on their indication, so that the distinctive style of the Neapolitan fashion house is constantly refreshed. “In our work the essential drivers are quality of the fabrics and the cut. On closer inspection, perhaps, the secret of success is blending tradition and modernity, something which sounds easy at first but requires a lot of thought. The result of this synthesis is the balance and harmony which one feels every time you wear our garments.”

Christofle “Royal Jack” special collection for Mandarin Oriental, Milan’s four-legged friends.
A touch of humour to remind us that the act of sharing has many forms and the brand’s creativity extends into ever more spheres. To accompany our dependable friends in every moment of daily life, Christofle presents the collection “Royal Jack”, bringing together all the canine essentials: collars, leashes, name tags and bowls. Collar and leash are stylishly decorated with metallic pearls while the calf-leather collar, in the brand’s new “peacock green”, brings together elegance and comfort. The leash is fitted with a metal hilt to separate its grip of calf-leather from the chain’s palladiated brass. The set is completed by a solid, silver name-plate wearing the engraved crown of Christofle on one side and awaits a personal engraving with the name of our beloved animal on the other. And for when Jack is in need of refreshment, Christofle created a double, silver-plated bowl made of a double dish so that water and food is presented in a manner worthy of a king, his face reflected in the crown logo of the House. Thanks to this first in the pet collection, Christofle offers the chance to share in the story of Jack’s adventure. The Royal Jack collection is now available in our suites and at the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot.
