Milan Vibes Nothing beats friends gathered around the table, a good glass of wine, the otherworldly aroma of truffles and wild game meats. For this reason, at the Mandarin Oriental, Milan, we have put together a few special evenings where excellent wines are paired with exceptional cuisine from our chef, Antonio Guida. We’ve called them “Fine Wine Dinners” and they offer the perfect occasion to discover prestigious vintage wines in the unique context of the Duomo Private Dining Room, crown jewel of the Seta Restaurant: the space can accommodate up to 8 people with visionary and dreamlike bespoke furnishings by Fornasetti. This time of year is also the best time to take care of your mind and body: Oriental Saturdays are back in great demand from both guests and outsiders and they are completely in line with the oriental philosophy that distinguishes Mandarin Oriental. At the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot, a new feature awaits: DJ Aggness will be creating an ideal atmosphere on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The city is full of exhibitions, sporting events and music: check out the full schedule in this new issue of the journal and don’t miss out on the best that Milan has to offer. Happy reading, Luca Finardi Area Vice President, Operations Italy Mandarin Oriental, Milan

Green is in fashion

Not only cruelty and fur free: fashion is increasingly committed to sustainable production and reducing its environmental impact without losing its elegance, as seen in the recent Green Carpet Awards.

It began with Livia Firth when she launched Eco-Age, a consulting firm specialized in sustainability and communication. This year marks the third edition of the Green Carpet Awards, which were held in Milan on September 22. From important statements made by fashion giants like Gucci (Kering Group), claiming to be carbon neutral and aiming to use 100% renewable energy in its factories by 2020; to the green oriented fashion show. The Dior show in Paris presented the S/S 2020 collection created by designer Maria Grazia Chiuri in an “inclusive garden”, the term used by Dior. The collection is entirely recyclable, plastic free and the 164 trees used during the show were then relocated to Paris and its surrounding areas to reflect on biodiversity and man’s relationship with nature. With the hashtag #PlantingForTheFuture – ça va sans dire. Many companies have made sustainability their trademark. Just think of Stella McCartney who, since the beginning of her career, has diligently mapped the industry and used evidence to make groundbreaking interventions that lighten the impact of the fashion supply chain and reconfigure it for the future. For this reason, Stella McCartney has been awarded with the GCFA Groundbreaker Award this year.

1. FRANÇOIS-HENRI PINAULT, CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF KERING WAS AWARDED THE GCFA VISIONARY AWARD BY GINEVRA ELKANN. PINAULT HAS ALLOWED SUSTAINABILITY TO BECOME A CORE PART OF THE MARKET VALUE RATHER THAN A COST OF DOING BUSINESS. 2. THE GCFA GROUNDBREAKER AWARD WAS WON BY STELLA MCCARTNEY FOR HER PIONEERING WORK. 3. PIERPAOLO PICCIOLI, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF VALENTINO, AND ADUT AKECH. 4. VALENTINO GARAVANI AND SOPHIA LOREN. VALENTINO ACCEPTED THE PRESTIGIOUS LEGACY AWARD FOR HIS ICONIC WORK, SPANNING FIVE DECADES, CHAMPIONING ITALIAN DESIGN AND FASHION. 5.THE DRESS CREATED BY ALBERTA FERRETTI FOR TONI GARREN.

While Greta Thunberg was preparing to challenge the United Nations, an event with loads of glamour but very noble intentions was being staged at the La Scala opera house in Milan at the end of fashion week. The Green Carpet Awards were an opportunity to admire some of the high fashion brands’ most beautiful creations made totally bespoke and sustainable. Take, for instance, the looks of Adut Akech and Sophia Loren dressed by Valentino, Lou Doillon dressed by Gucci and Amber Valletta dressed by Stella McCartney. This year’s sustainable green carpet covered Piazza La Scala using more than 2,000 square meters of ECONYL ® regenerated nylon, created from rescued fishing nets and other nylon waste, while all plants and flowers used in the production of the event were donated to the city of Milan and re-planted after the awards.

THE WINTER 2019 COLLECTION BY ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA CAN BE DISTINGUISHED BY ITS DELICATE FORMALITY AND DEFINED, VOLUMINOUS

LIVIA FIRTH, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF ECO-AGE AND FOUNDER OF THE GREEN CARPET CHALLENGE.

What does sustainable fashion really mean? What aspects does it include? At Eco-Age, we prefer to use sustainable fashion - a fashion that should be what the word says… “sustainable”, lasting in time and the total opposite of disposable, which is sadly the reality we face today because of fast fashion. Behind sustainable fashion lie artisanal skills, craftsmanship, good quality and the beautiful stories of the people who make clothes in supply chains worldwide. We call this the “handprint” of fashion.

WITH ITS #USETHEEXISTING SLOGAN, THE COLLECTION IS MADE ALMOST ENTIRELY FROM EXCLUSIVE WOOL CREATED THROUGH INNOVATIVE PROCESSES FROM EXISTING RESOURCES. THE RESULT IS HIGH-QUALITY MATERIALS THAT ARE SOFT TO THE TOUCH AND “RESPONSIBLE” AT THE SAME TIME SINCE THEY ARE RECYCLED AND RECYCLABLE.

What episode triggered your desire to start this eco-green mission in fashion? The first time I visited a garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was 2008 and it was a shocking experience - there were so many women, women like me, working in awful conditions and like slaves. How do you bring companies to become environmentally and socially responsible? We are experts in bringing positive, sustainable change to key audiences and are trusted leaders in this area. Our evidence-led sustainability narratives and programs of change resonate with both consumers and industry insiders. Our response to global issues such as climate change and resource depletion is creative, dynamic, technical and innovative. We take great care with our messaging and campaigns so that audiences are not overwhelmed by the scale and pace of global challenges. We believe the most impressive change is achieved when we inspire and delight.

The New Icon

New interpretations of the models that have made history.

1. THE BASIS OF ITS IMPLEMENTATION HAS ONE SOLE GOAL: TO CHALLENGE CONVENTIONS AND BECOME THE SPORTIEST VERSION OF A MUST-HAVE MODEL. IT IS THEREFORE NO COINCIDENCE THAT THE ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE COLLECTION OF AUDEMARS PIGUET HAS BEEN DEFYING ESTABLISHED CONVENTIONS FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS, NOW WITH A POWERFUL DESIGN THAT INTRODUCES A RUBBER STRAP “CAMOUFLAGE”, A KHAKI-GREEN DIAL WITH A “MÉGA TAPISSERIE” PATTERN AND WHITE GOLD HANDS. 2. IT WAS THE YEAR 2000 WHEN THE FIRST MODEL MADE ITS APPEARANCE ON THE WRISTS OF FASHIONISTAS WORLDWIDE. THIS YEAR IT’S RETURNING WITH AN AUTOMATIC CALIBER 12.1 MOVEMENT DEVELOPED EXCLUSIVELY BY THE RUE CAMBON BOUTIQUE. AVAILABLE IN BLACK OR WHITE CERAMIC WITH DIAMOND HOUR MARKERS, THE NEW J12 CHANEL UPHOLDS ITS LEGENDARY IDENTITY. 3. IT WAS THE FIRST WATCH TO COMBINE DIAMONDS WITH A STAINLESS STEEL FRAME, MAKING IT ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC MODELS OF LUXURY JEWELLERY: THE HAPPY SPORT COLLECTION IS THE EPITOME OF THE BOLDNESS TYPICAL OF CHOPARD. 4. IT HAS BEEN THE EMBLEM OF THE ELEGANT SPORTS WATCH SINCE 1976: NOW FORTY YEARS LATER, IT HAS EVOLVED INTO A COLLECTION DESIGNED FOR EVER INCREASING ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRITS WHO NEVER WANT TO STOP. THE NEW LADIES AUTOMATIC NAUTILUS BY PATEK PHILIPPE IS A REINTERPRETATION OF THE ORIGINAL DESIGN WITH A ROSE GOLD FRAME AND BAND, A GOLD OPALINE DIAL, AND GOLD-PLATED HOUR MARKERS AND HANDS WITH A LUMINOUS FINISH. 5. IT WAS THE FIRST AUTOMATIC, WATERPROOF WRISTWATCH WITH CHRONOMETER FUNCTION TO DISPLAY THE DATE IN A WINDOW ON THE DIAL. IT CAME OUT IN 1945 AND SINCE THEN THE ICONIC DATEJUST MODEL HAS REMAINED TIMELESS. THE OYSTER PERPETUAL DATEJUST 31 IS THE NEW VERSION OF A GREAT CLASSIC INTRODUCING TWO VARIANTS – YELLOW ROLESOR AND EVEROSE ROLESOR – WHICH ARE EQUIPPED WITH CALIBER 2236 AND DEVELOPED ENTIRELY BY ROLEX.

MANDARIN OVERVIEW

Fine Wine Lovers A Michelin-starred dinner paired with fine Italian wines in an exclusive location: the new Duomo Private Dining Room. Three evenings that hold the promise of magic.

Excellent wines, Michelin-starred cuisine and a fascinating and intriguing location: three ingredients that are a guarantee for magical moments. And this is exactly what will happen at Mandarin Oriental, Milan over the course of two exclusive evenings in October and December. The unique location is the new Duomo Private Dining Room, created in collaboration with Fornasetti. Custom-made furniture with an unmistakable style that is able to transport you into dreamlike and imaginary worlds. Three exceptional wineries, Zenato, Ferrari and Ca’ del Bosco, are the wine providers for the evening. They represent two of the most prestigious wine-growing regions in Italy. Antonio Guida, Executive Chef of the Seta Restaurant, will prepare the food. With two Michelin stars, he has designed a custom-made menu that perfectly pairs with the wines to ensure an enhanced and complete tasting experience. “For these three exclusive evenings,” says Andrea Loi, Head Sommelier of the Mandarin Oriental, Milan, “we have chosen three wineries whose values we fully share. On one hand, we have Zenato, a symbol of Lombardy and Valpolicella, while on the other, Ca’ del Bosco represents Franciacorta and Ferrari with its internationally recognized sparkling wines.”

11 OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2019 - ISSUE 05

“Tasting starts by analyzing the color, smell and taste, but I don’t like using technicalities or vocabulary that is too specific. Tasting has to do with emotions, with the stories of experiences and human choices”. Over the course of the tasting, you will have the opportunity to try some of the country’s greatest vintages, as well as other special years. At the same time, you’ll be able to hear the stories and learn about the moments that have characterized and constitute the history of these wineries. “I go in person to visit the wineries and find out how they work, if they respect the environment: all elements that contribute to creating good wine. It is not only about quality but also attention to certain values that we, as the Mandarin, share,” he concludes.

Green Living

Modern, dynamic, vibrant, and above all, green: the new Porta Nuova district is the perfect combination of city identity and European vision. It’s here where COIMA’s new project is situated. The company specializes in the investment, development and management of real estate assets with a very human-centered core.

An example of one of the most ambitious redevelopment projects in Europe through the reconstruction of the Garibaldi, Varesine and Isola districts, Porta Nuova covers an area of over 290,000 square meters. The zone is integrated into the original urban layout through a continuous pedestrian network characterized by piazzas, bridges and green areas. It ensures safe and easy access between the different neighborhoods. A hub of business, design and fashion, its futuristic buildings that soar towards the sky have redesigned Milan’s skyline and have become a privileged location for the headquarters of many multinational corporations and prestigious brands. COIMA SGR – an independent company leader in the asset management of a real estate investment fund valuing over 5 billion euros – is well aware of this, which is why it has chosen to invest in this district, promoting elegant and luxurious housing options.

“ Our commitment is to work towards the achievement of concrete results and goals. Over the past year, we have seen a substantial increase in sustainability issues awareness among our customers, with a demand for increasingly high-performance products”. “We believe that the buildings must be respectful of the places in which they are upgraded/developed. The integration into the city and enhancement of the areas surrounding the buildings are part of our real estate investment processes,” explains Matteo Ravà, Managing Director, Asset Management, COIMA, from the new office headquarters overlooking the Library of Trees, one of the city’s new parks boasting 500 trees and thousands of plants of many different species. Among the most desirable projects is the award-winning Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest). Icon of a new model of urban reforestation, it has 15,000 plants and 90 different species of trees, shrubs and floral vegetation representing a unique heritage of diversity. This earned it the prestigious International Highrise Award in 2014, the Best Tall Building Europe and Best Tall Building Worldwide Award in 2015, among others. But the Ville di Porta Nuova are also an interesting fusion between tradition and innovation: each floor offers an internal garden that becomes a perfect extension of the living room. Many iconic buildings give character to the neighborhood. The Solea tower is 69 meters tall and plays with volumes and black and white effects on the façade, therefore creating a new architectural dynamism. The Solaria & Aria stands 143 meters high, the highest residence in Italy. Thanks to its unparalleled stature, it ensures absolute privacy and exposure to daylight. From its upper apartments, you can see from the spires of the Duomo to the Alps. “Buildings must be innovative when it comes to flexibility in the use of space, energy consumption and services that a certain kind of international user expects and that are not always found in other real estate developments,” explains Matteo Ravà. These features include a gym, conference rooms, party rooms or home theaters, 24/7 reception services, video surveillance systems and high-energy efficiency systems. These exclusive and unrivalled characteristics do not fail to attract international investments, which today represent the majority of the capital invested in the city: “this trend is now consolidated in the main European economic capitals where international investors can better weigh the investment risk,” he concludes.

Longevity, tradition and excellence: the Biondi-Santi winery is a symbol of Brunello di Montalcino and testimony to this unparalleled country.

THE GREPPO ESTATE STRETCHES ACROSS THE HILLSIDE TO THE SOUTHEAST OF MONTALCINO AND ENJOYS AN IDEAL MICROCLIMATE AND SOIL FOR THE PRODUCTION OF AROMATIC RED WINES, WHICH ARE PERFECT FOR LONG AGEING.

The winery’s history is inseparably linked to that of Brunello di Montalcino: it was Ferruccio Biondi Santi who, about a century ago, created one of the most prestigious wines, if not the most prestigious wine in the world.

GIAMPIERO BERTOLINI, AD OF BIONDI-SANTI WINERY

“Our wines are well acquainted with time,” jokes Giovanni Lai, commercial director of the winery. He shares how at the end of the 19th century, Chianti was the bestknown wine while Biondi-Santi was a trailblazer. “He didn’t follow the market” continues Lai, “but had great dedication and a vision.” The recent acquisition of six hectares of vineyards registered with Brunello in Montalcino has been very important, thus increasing the land from 26 to 32 hectares. But equally important for Biondi-Santi is qualitative excellence combined with proper communication and important partnerships. “We typically don’t plan evening events or tastings, but with Mandarin Oriental, Milan, there was an incredible understanding right from the beginning: the restaurant staff came to visit our winery to get to known the product. From this, a collaboration came about to create a special evening in the Duomo Private Dining Room at the Seta Restaurant.”

23 OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2019 - ISSUE 05

To accompany the winery’s vintages, some which cannot be found elsewhere, Chef Antonio Guida has created dishes that dialogue with the notes and aromas of the wine, resulting in an almost irreplicable harmony. “Our wines have character and elegance,” continues Lai, “and it’s not easy to find the right balance with the fragrances and flavors of a dish, but Chef Guida has managed to do this to perfection.” The pride of the winery is its “Riserva” produced by the Tenuta Greppo vineyard. The wines are over 25 years old and come only from the most exceptional harvests. When asked if certain vintages age well over the decades, Lai confirms that if well preserved in the right environment they are able to maintain their crispness and body. “Inside every bottle, there is great technicality, but in the end, it’s the emotion that really counts,” he concludes. One could add that every bottle holds within it a little piece of Italy, its uniqueness, tradition and worth.

MANDARIN OVERVIEW

Time to Spa Autumn is the time for fitness, relaxation and regeneration: the perfect occasion to choose and devote yourself to the yoga practice that is best for you.

Not all yoga is the same. Some practices are more intense, some more reflective, others more regenerating. There are many types suitable for different times of the day but above all some that work better with your needs and personality. Often people don’t know which kind of yoga practice is best for them. That’s why the Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Milan has come up with a solution “What’s your yoga mood?” (available for all hotel guests upon reservation) which offers three different types of yoga, to be chosen according to how you feel and with the goals you want to reach in mind.

ONLY AT MANDARIN ORIENTAL SATURDAYS RETURN AND ARE DESIGNED TO START THE WEEKEND IN A STATE OF HARMONY. The various levels of Hatha Yoga are one hour long. When? Every Saturday from October 12 to December 7, 2019 and again from January 12, 2020. From 10 am to 11 am Each lesson is 35 euro per person. For further information please contact the Spa at +39 02 8731 8882 or via email momln-spa@mohg.com

Those looking for psychophysical balance after a day of stress, meetings and calls will find Restorative Yoga perfectly fitting and regenerating. This practice leads to a deep and conscious listening of the body and breath and helps release tension and free your mind from busy thoughts. Extremely light, it is a real cureall for body and spirit. Hatha Yoga is aimed at those who see yoga as a physical practice that improves elasticity and muscle tone. It is the most traditional form made up of various levels based on ability. Yoga Nidra (aka dynamic sleep yoga) involves lying on a mat on the ground with your eyes closed. The teacher’s voice will guide you through a meditation that brings you into the state between wakefulness and sleep. Particularly suitable for those who suffer from insomnia and jet-lag, it helps with “detachment” from sensory experiences in order to regain concentration and peace.

CONCEIVED AND CONCEPTUALIZED BY SCHOLAR KATE CRAWFORD AND ARTIST AND RESEARCHER TREVOR PAGLEN, TRAINING HUMANS IS THE FIRST MAJOR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO TRAINING IMAGES: THE COLLECTION OF PHOTOS USED BY SCIENTISTS TO TRAIN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) SYSTEMS IN HOW TO SEE AND CATEGORIZE THE WORLD. STARTING FROM THE IMAGES USED IN THE FIRST EXPERIMENTS FROM THE COMPUTERIZED FACIAL RECOGNITION LABORATORY, FINANCED BY THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (CIA) SINCE 1963, THE EXHIBITION OFFERS AN ACCURATE HISTORICAL RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MOST WIDESPREAD ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNOLOGIES IN OUR SOCIETY, SUCH AS BIOMETRIC SURVEILLANCE AND THE MAPPING OF EMOTIONS. A STARTING POINT FOR REFLECTION ON THE POSSIBLE ETHICAL, POLITICAL AND LEGAL IMPLICATIONS OF SUCH PRACTICES.
