Automechanika Academy – discover more
This year’s Automechanika in Frankfurt will once again be distinguished by a wideranging programme of lectures with over 50 speakers to ensure that visitors are brought fully up-to-date about important subjects relating to the automotive business.
T
he main themes of the Automechanika Academy cover a wide field. For example, the ZEIT Automotive Conference is aimed at representatives of politics, business and research. Naturally, the programme also includes the subject of training. Together with academics from two German universities, Automechanika presents a study showing how workshops can improve trainee recruitment. Another subject of importance for the future is the connected car and there will be a theme day about this on 17 September. Well-known representatives of the IT world will also be taking part. Another topic likely to be in focus over the coming years is further reductions in hazardous CO2 emissions and several experts will be on hand to discuss this question on 18 September.
6 | July-August | autoASIA
New this year at Automechanika Frankfurt is the subject of logistics. A specialist forum organised by the German Logistics Association (BVL) entitled ‘Complexity in the aftermarket – logistical challenges’ will be held on 17 September. To be held within the framework of the Automobile Service Symposium, ‘the car dealership of the future’ is a multi-day topic and lectures on tomorrow’s automobile service will take place in Hall 9.2 from 17 to 19 September. Rounding off the programme is a seminar programme on vehicle washing to be held, of course, at Car Wash City. Everyone with a professional interest in cleaning car interiors and exteriors is welcome from 17 to 19 September.
Another perennial issue of recent years is also relevant for the future: electric mobility. And this is the main theme on 19 September whereby the emphasis will be on new technologies for electrically powered vehicles.
Another important congress will be the highlight on 19 September. The theme: collision-damage management. This international event will present, inter alia, the EU study on ‘Collision Repair Process Management’.
Less futuristic but no less important is the subject of automobile bodywork and painting. And, for all specialists from this field, this will be a focal-point theme on 18 September. In addition to attending lectures, they will also have the chance to make and cultivate contacts. On 16 September, there will be an expert meeting on body repairs. To this end, the Vogel Verlag publishing company is holding its ‘Würzburg Body and Collision Damage Day’ at the fair in Frankfurt for the first time.
There are many good reasons for visiting the fair and the programme of events at Automechanika Frankfurt represent several more. Dubai
has made a name for itself as an air traffic hub. This is also applying increasingly to the spare parts industry, as the Automechanika in Dubai continues to enjoy unabated growth. In terms of the number of visitors, the twelfth event outstripped its predecessor by almost 20 percent. There was a good deal of profitable business for the 28,882 trade buyers from more than 130 countries who made their way to the Emirate. This represents a visitor increase of 19 percent compared to 2013: proof that business in the Middle East is well worth it. Almost 1,700 exhibitors from 59 countries presented their innovations as well as established products. As a bridge between Europe, Asia and Africa, Dubai is becoming evermore important: there were product launches and regional premieres in abundance. “Automechanika Dubai continues to maintain its role as the region’s leading barometer for the automobile aftermarket”, says Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Epoc Messe Frankfurt, the organisers. “Dubai’s growing importance as a central trans-shipment point to drive the region’s aftermarket trade, underscores the industry’s enormous growth potential. This is also the case with Automechanika Dubai. It is the leading platform from which international brands can interact with the regional market.” The visitors showed a great deal of interest in the products on display, which were grouped as follows: vehicle components, systems, tuning, workshop equipment, paint and bodywork, carwashes, IT and management, tyres and batteries, plus the latest automotive services. Exactly as in Frankfurt, Dubai attaches a great deal of importance to apprenticeship schemes and in-service training, with the result that the Automechanika Academy was held on two days of the fair and offered a series of seminars and workshops by leading experts and well-known persons from the business. The large number of participants was proof that the event had struck the right chord. Automechanika Dubai will also be held again next year in the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. It will be open from 2 to 4 June, 2015.

- The S-19500/19501 series features easy on/off control for the watchdog timer simplifying software Seiko Instruments Inc. (SII) announced the release of the S-19500/19501 series LDO voltage regulator with an easily-controlled watchdog timer and reset function that simplifies implementation. The new regulators are optimized for use in constant-voltage power supply for automotive electric components and microcontroller monitoring. Traditionally, external monitoring has been required for microcontroller safety, and it has complicated circuit designs and increased the number of components when designing circuits with single-function ICs. The new S-19500/19501 series is capable of not only meeting the requirements by integrating a LDO regulator, reset IC, and watchdog timer into one chip, but also simplifies the software interface making the watchdog timer control easier. Load current from the internal LDO regulator automatically turns on/off the watchdog timer, preventing unnecessary monitoring during the microcontroller’s sleep mode. In addition, a WEN pin can forcibly turn on/off the watchdog timer until the system is stabilized during the microcontroller startup or during software update without using external circuits. This innovative design by SII allows customers to simplify design and software, reduce component count, and save space. SII’s unique laser-trimming technology has achieved output voltage accuracy of +/-2.0% and detection voltage accuracy of +/-100mV over temperature. Also, a single capacitor is needed for adjusting both the reset release delay time and the watchdog timer monitoring time. The reduced number of pins has made a small 8-pin HSOP-8A package (5.02×6.0×1.68 mm) a reality. Customers can select the S-19501 series that has a reset output pin separate from the watchdog output pin. The output voltage is selectable from 3.0 V to 5.3 V in 0.1 V steps. The operating temperature range is -40 to +125 degree C and the maximum rating is 45V. AEC-Q100 (Automotive Electronics Council reliability stress test) and PPAP (Automotive Production Parts Approval Process) qualification are currently in process. “This is the next step in what’s already been a successful partnership, and it’s going to be fun to take it to another level. We hope to kick it off with a win this weekend for Panasonic and Toughbook.”
Panasonic Expands Relationship with Hendrick Motorsports Panasonic has expanded its relationship with Hendrick Motorsports with a new multi-year agreement that includes primary sponsorship of the No. 24 team of four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and current points leader Jeff Gordon. Panasonic will be featured as a primary sponsor of the No. 24 team in two Sprint Cup races annually and as an associate-level partner in all other events. It will mark the first on-car branding for Panasonic since joining Hendrick Motorsports as a technology partner in 2007. The agreement covers the 2014, 2015 and 2016 NASCAR seasons. Gordon’s No. 24 Panasonic Chevrolet SS debuted on June 22nd at California’s Sonoma Raceway and will again appear Aug. 31 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Panasonic’s Toughbook brand will be featured on the car’s quarter panels at Sonoma.

“To maximize the value of a NASCAR sponsorship, you need to partner with proven teams and drivers that exemplify your brand,” said Rance Poehler, president, Panasonic System Communications Company of North America. “Hendrick Motorsports and Jeff Gordon have a record of excellence that is a perfect fit for Panasonic and its Toughbook brand. We’ve been a technology partner of Hendrick Motorsports for many years, and as our business evolves to solutions and deeper partnerships with our customers, it is an excellent time to extend our relationship from behind the scenes to the car on the track.” Panasonic Toughbook computers play a key role in racing operations. “Once we brought the Panasonic Toughbooks into our business, the crew chief and the engineers right away said, we love this product,” said Chris Newsome, Infrastructure Manager IT & Facilities, Hendrick
Motorsports. “We depend on Panasonic,” added Newsome. Hendrick Motorsports also currently utilizes Panasonic technology throughout its Concord facility, including professional camcorders, professional flat panel displays, televisions, digital signage and projection units. The team also uses Panasonic’s professional video products to support its in-house video production capabilities. Panasonic will leverage the partnership to promote technology solutions and products for business.
Panasonic has already helped Sonoma Raceway, where the Panasonic Chevrolet SS made its debut, to reduce its environmental impact by installing a Solar Power Generating System that supplies approximately 40% of the circuit’s power needs. “Panasonic has a combination of world-class people and prod-
ucts,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “We use their technology across the organization, and it provides the best possible tools in every area, from competition to marketing to IT. To have them see more opportunities for their business and want to grow the relationship sends a very positive message.” Gordon, 42, who grew up in nearby Vallejo, California, is one of the most accomplished drivers in NASCAR history, posting a record five Sprint Cup wins at Sonoma Raceway. He is a four-time Sprint Cup champion, and his 89 victories rank third on the all-time wins list. In 15 races this season, he has posted one victory, five top-five finishes and a series-best 11 top10 finishes. “We’re looking forward to working with Panasonic in a new way, and I can’t think of a better place for their debut with the No. 24 team,” said Gordon before the race in Sonoma. “This is the next step in what’s already been a successful partnership, and it’s going to be fun to take it to another level. We hope to kick it off with a win this weekend for Panasonic and Toughbook.”

Presentations by new and familiar names from many countries including Germany, South Korea, Turkey, Slovakia and Russia According to OPEC, world demand for oil will rise daily to 108.5 million barrels (one barrel = 159 litres) by 2035. At present, global oil consumption amounts to 90 million barrels a day. In line with this trend, the number of exhibitors from the oil and lubrication sector has risen significantly and round 100 companies have registered to present their lubricants, plant, equipment, aids, consumables and recycling solutions at the coming Automechanika from 16 to 20 September 2014. The renowned companies taking part include Liqui Moly GmbH, Wolf Oil, ROWE MINERALÖLWERK GMBH, Petronas Lubricants, WD-40, WYNN´s, Ravensberger Schmierstoffvertrieb GmbH, Bita Trading and Eurolub GmbH. Among the companies taking part for the first time are Deutsche Ölwerke Lubmin GmbH, Bullsone Co Ltd from South Korea, EURO-VAT spol. s r.o. from the Republic of Slovenia, Reksoil Petrokimya San. ve Tic AS. from Turkey and Obninskorgsintez CJSC from Russia. bacteria from vehicle interiors, providing safe and healthy motoring.” Millers Oils from England is exhibiting at Automechanika Frankfurt for the third time. “Automechanika is an essential platform for Millers Oils to showcase not only our products but the brand as a whole to a worldwide audience. We intend to continue to build on our successful sales relationships with our current international stockist, whilst also looking to attract new distributors and stockists from across the world. FLOWCONTROL - the innovation for 5 litre oil delivery allows you to control the flow into your engine filler point without the use of a funnel, resulting in less spillage and considerably reducing the risk of contamination. By placing the bottle over the oil filler and opening the twist-grip tap, oil flows smoothly into the engine, while air is allowed into the bottle via a special air supply tube. Opening the tap further increases the flow - when fully open 5 litres can be dispersed in 30 seconds. At all times you are in complete control”, says David McCann, Export Manager (Europe), Millers Oils.
BIZOL, for example, will use Automechanika Frankfurt to launch the redesign of all its product lines. Chief Marketing Officer Marcello Assandri explains: “Being present as a German Premium brand in more than 60 countries and aiming at 100, we felt the need to differentiate our brand by continuing our innovation efforts and through design. In fact, we have upgraded not only our motor oils according to the highest quality standards of the German automotive industry but also our motor-oil containers. Our booth has been created by an external design agency. We are thus introducing design combined with performance in the motor-oil industry as a new differentiating element.” Another company, Australian manufacturer Fortron, which now exports to 14 countries and already exhibits at Automechanika Johannesburg, wants to make its products better known in Europe and has entered its ‘Forton Ozone Generator’ for the Automechanika Innovation Award in the Service Station & Carwash category. Michael Csordas, General Manager International Business of FORTRON AUTOMOTIVE TREATMENTS, says, “The Fortron Ozone Generator has been specifically designed for use within automotive service centres as a value added service to remove odours caused by bacteria from the vehicles air conditioning system and from spillages within the vehicle. The Ozone machine has been designed to be robust, user friendly and specifically designed to direct ozone to the source of the problem. Ford, DTE Energy to Build Michigan’s Largest Solar Array

Motor Company is teaming with DTE Energy to build Michigan’s largest solar array at Ford World Headquarters.
“We are thrilled to be collaborating with DTE Energy to bring a more efficient, renewable energy source to our offices” The project, funded by DTE Energy, will provide employees with 360 covered parking spaces and 30 charging stations for plug-in electric vehicles such as the company’s Ford Fusion Energi and C-MAX Hybrid Energi. A kiosk will also be on site offering general information to visitors about solar power and specific

details about the Ford carport. “Ford has a long history of innovation and a deep commitment to sustainability,” said Bill Ford, executive chairman of Ford Motor Company. “Our fundamental purpose as a company is to make people’s lives better. We do that by creating outstanding products, by investing in communities where our employees live and work, and by using technology to tackle global sustainability challenges. Those beliefs are embodied in this project.”
The solar canopy will have capacity to generate 1.038 megawatts of electricity – enough to power 158 average-sized homes. It will be the second-largest solar carport in the Midwest, after a 1.1-megawatt facility at the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio, and it will reduce the amount of electricity Ford pulls from the grid to run its offices. The solar array will offset an estimated 794 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
“We are thrilled to be collaborating with DTE Energy to bring a more efficient, renewable energy source to our offices,” said Donna Inch, chairman and CEO, Ford Motor Land Development Corporation. “This is an innovative project that will benefit both DTE Energy and Ford, and is yet another example of our work toward building a more sustainable future.”
are built.
Under a recently finalized agreement, DTE Energy will construct, operate and maintain the carport for 20 years. Construction is slated to begin in September and be completed in early 2015.
Multiple varieties of sedum were planted to reduce storm water runoff from the building. The project built on the success Ford saw a decade ago when it developed its first green roof at Dearborn Truck Plant, home of F-150 pickup production. Consider the numbers:
The solar installation is part of an initiative DTE Energy launched in 2009 called SolarCurrents. The program works to fulfill DTE Energy’s commitment to generate 10 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2015. “The SolarCurrents canopy project is another example of how DTE Energy and Ford are working to build a more energy-efficient and sustainable future,” said Irene Dimitry, DTE Energy vice president, marketing and renewables. “At the same time, this project will help us come closer to meeting Michigan’s renewable energy goals and diversify our energy portfolio.” This is the second collaboration between Ford and DTE Energy in recent years. In 2010, the companies teamed up to install a 500-kilowatt solar photovoltaic panel system at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan. Energy generated by the system helps power vehicle production at the plant, where Ford Focus, Focus Electric, C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi
Ford World Headquarters is home to other environmental innovations. In 2012, a “living roof” was installed when a 2,500-square-foot portion of the rooftop needed repair.
-10.4 acres of drought-resistant vegetation (the equivalent of eight football fields) was planted on top of the truck plant. -The vegetation helps create a natural storm water management system that costs two-thirds less to operate than a conventional treatment system. -The roof, covered with 11 plant species that act as insulation, lowers the amount of heat entering the building by 70 percent, reducing cooling costs by 5 percent About Ford Motor Company Ford Motor Company, a global

Pioneers from all over the world to make presentations on the ‘Tomorrow’s Mobility’ at Automechanika 2014 Latest developments in a variety of fields including storage technology, charging infrastructure, engines, electronics, lightweight construction, alternative fuels and much more
L
ocated in the immediate vicinity of the Portalhaus entrance building, Hall 10 will have a new motto – ‘Mobility of the Future’ – during the coming Automechanika Frankfurt. In addition to a variety of e‑vehicles from over 12 countries, numerous pioneering companies will present the latest developments in the fields of engines, electronics, lightweight construction, storage technology, energy supply, charging infrastructure, financing, basic and advanced training, repairs and service. Moreover, many of the exhibitors will show that networking, e.g., universities, research institutes or industrial partners, is an extremely worthwhile aspect of business. The exhibitors include: • Vehicle manufacturers, such as Opel, Mitsubishi, Xindayang, Renault, Rinspeed, FEEDZ, ZERO Motorcycles, Mattro Mobility Revolutions GmbH • Vehicle makers, such as Terberg, Orten/Libner, Dülmer, Hartmann & Ostmann • Workshop equipment supplier AVL Ditest • Vehicle conversion companies, such as Karabag/Wemag (Fiat 500 Reevolt) and Gessner (VW buses) • Lightweight-construction companies, such as Toray and Stadur • Gas-system manufacturers, such as PRINS, STAKO and Fagumit • E-mobility provider GESPA • Parts manufacturer ElringKlinger AG (components for drive technologies) How can particles, CO2 emissions and fuel consumption be cut as far as possible? Market-leader Prins Autogassysteme, winner of the Automechanika Innovation Award and Green Directory Award 2012, will show the latest solutions for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas (CNG and LNG) and,

together with its partners, present solutions for directinjection petrol engines tested and available in Germany, the Prins DLM-2.0 and VSI-2.0 DI. Additionally, two Polish companies, Stako and Fagumit, will exhibit components for LPG and CNG systems. Vehicle converter and e-mobility pioneer Karabag, which was taken over by the WEMAG utility company earlier this year, is set to present its ReeVOLT Transformation Kit, which enables any workshop to convert conventional vehicles to electric power without difficulty. Comprising an electric motor, control system, battery pack and independent heating system, the conversion kit is suitable for cars, transporters and even classic cars. This will be demonstrated by the e-Beetle, the Karabag New500e based on a Fiat 500, which was launched this year, and a Fiat Transporter. “The commercial electromobility market is much more interesting than the private market because many commercial vehicles are used for fixed routes and, therefore, within a projectable framework. For tradesmen or nursing services, e-vehicles are already an economic alternative to petrol or diesel powered vehicles”, says WEMAG Development Manager Raymond See explaining the utility company’s interest in the sector. To ensure the better integration of e-cars in the urban environment, WEMAG and Karabag are working with partners to develop energy-management and wireless charging solutions. GESPA is a provider of complete systems in the field of electro-mobility and renewable energies and distinguished by internal expertise in the fields of electro-
mobility, project development and after-sales services. Innovative solar carports with storage batteries, charging infrastructures and the associated electro vehicles are all part of the company’s day-to-day business. In this connection, GESPA can draw on a network of partners for sales, planning, financing and assembly, around which the holistic systems are developed and offered. Using this network, GESPA can also operate in other European markets. A successful example of a mediumsized network is Streetscooter, the car version of which will be on show at the fair. That RWTH Aachen University can boast numerous other research projects on electric car components in addition to Streetscooter is to be seen from the KERME project to develop a scalable electric motor, a module set for making e-motors with different outputs from as many identical parts as possible. The AVA-KühlerHaugg Group in Aachen designed the cooling circuit, including heat exchanger, for this project and will present the prototype of a new
kind of heat store at the fair. The fact that new drive-chain concepts also call for new, lightweight structures made of new materials is reflected by prototype cases for the Streetscooter made by Stadur, a company that has great ambitions in the field of lightweight construction and has announced that it will be presenting new lightweight sandwich elements at the fair. Other exhibitors in this field include Ostmann, Düllmer Fahrzeugbau, Orten and Libner, who will show that the various vehicle weight categories need to be redefined. Thus, visitors to Hall 10 will be able to see a number of vehicles in the transporter segment, which are characterised by new technical concepts with higher load capacities of up to 1.2 tonnes – more than ever before. The German E-Mobility Association (Bundesverband eMobilität e. V. (BEM)) will make a presentation in a lounge setting and, as an independent body of experts, monitor the exchange of information between international players. autoASIA | July-August 2014 | 31

Massive or small, affordable or off-the scale pricey: urban sports utility vehicles abound at the Geneva Motor Show, with luxury carmakers speeding into the lucrative market. One of the stars of the show, which opened its doors to the media on Tuesday, is Porsche's new Macan. Crowds flocked around as the German carmaker unveiled the sleek, dark grey machine for the first time in Europe to great fanfare. "I can tell you that the intake is already very, very strong. It's better than we expected," head of Porsche sales and marketing Bernhard Maier told a news agency, pointing out that in Germany the line of buyers was so long deliveries would take about six months. Once known only as a sports car maker, the company has lead the charge of luxury car builders seeking to grab a slice of the booming and super trendy SUV segment. After showing the way just over a decade ago with the arrival of its mid-size luxury crossover the Cayenne, which today accounts for more than half of its sales, the company has moved on to its baby sister. With 340 horses under its clamshell bonnet for the S version, the compact SUV will hit European showrooms next month with an asking price of around 60,000 euros. As it moves into this new segment, the maker of the iconic 911 is broadening its range and appears to be on a steady course towards the 200,000 car sales a year mark. Porsche is set to push out a cool 50,000 Macans a year from its factory in Leipzig, Germany, and is making it pricier than the basic versions of its competitors Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes' GLK. Growing faster than any other segment, the new and smaller, yet luxurious SUVs have a knack at drawing in the coveted younger buyers who have yet to develop loyalty to any specific brand. "The example of Porsche shows that there is also a demand for a new type of car within the luxury segment," German car industry analyst Stefan Bratzel told the news agency. He hailed the carmaker for "managing to transmit the aura of its brand to other types of vehicles" by ensuring that the race car DNA shines through, in the engine and design. A number of other luxury carmakers meanwhile are set to follow Porsche's lead. British Bentley says it will launch an ultra-powerful model of SUV for the super rich in two years time, in a bid to reach its target of doubling its sales to 15,000 cars each year by 2018. Industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer said such a vehicle would likely cost around 180,000 euros - not enough to make the target buyers in Russia, China and the Middle East wince. Italy's Lamborghini, which like both Bentley and Porsche, belongs to Volkswagen, unveiled its SUV concept Urus two years ago, but is still waiting for VW to greenlight the project. "The market potential would in the US, in Middle East, in China and in some European markets," Lamborghini chief Stephan Winkelmann told the agency. And Maserati, which belongs to Italian Fiat, has hinted its Levante luxury crossover SUV might hit the market next year. British Rolls-Royce, owned by Germany's BMW, also says it is looking into building a car in the segment. But the company, renowned for its refined limousines, is wary the soul of its brand might be lost in the process. "The SUV segment is a very interesting segment for us to look at," Rolls-Royce sales chief Jolyon Nash told the news agency, pointing to the strong growth and rosy outlook for the segment. "But the big question for us is are we able to design, a car that is an authentic Rolls-Royce?" he said. British Land Rover, which takes credit for inventing the concept of luxury 4x4s decades ago, insists its not worried by the new competitors in its traditional market, with brand designer Richard Woolly stressing the company's "true heritage". Jaguar, which like Land Rover is owned by Indian Tata Motors, also aims to profit from that long experience: Last September it presented its own SUV concept, the C-X17. 42 July-August 2014 | autoASIA
