QuadTech unveiled world-first “color management breakthroughs” at INFO•FLEX 2017 corrections when needed at the printing press—with one product. The new ColorTrack Correction Module streamlines the correction process, allowing for fast, accurate color correction at the press to dramatically reduce waste caused by color problems. DNV.

• Ink Strength/Anilox Color Correction Manage ink color without correcting ink. Avoid the cost and time involved with recipe corrections by managing print conditions. Accurately predict the impact an ink concentration change or anilox change will have on color. Advanced “Perifarbe” math formulas tell you if and how the bestmatch can be achieved.

• Spot Color Tone Value Calculation to ISO 20654 Designed specifically with Packaging print in mind, the Spot Color Tone Value Calculation allows you to conform to the new ISO 20654 standard by showing how well your Spot Color mid-tones match your targets.

• Enhanced Color Measurement through Strip Scanning

At the recently held INFO•FLEX 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona, USA QuadTech conducted live demonstrations of its new ColorTrack™ color management software. ColorTrack was launched at drupa 2016, along with the new Color Measurement with DeltaCam™ and completely redesigned Inspection System. ColorTrack facilitates fast, accurate press-side correction of ink formulations. Without any hardware modifications to the press, ColorTrack software seamlessly integrates with ink recipe software to not only simplify workflow, but also dramatically reduce the number of ink corrections needed to achieve accurate, optimal color.

Gather a full set of color targets for solids, tones, and substrate in one sweep with a hand-held spectro. Measure and average multiple color strips.

• Simplified Ink Quantity Tracking via Patented “Virtual Scales” Actively track ink consumption without the use of costly scales on each ink unit. Because it is software-based, this precise tracking solution can be retrofit to any flexo or gravure press, allowing you to standardize on a single color management solution across any range of press types and models.

• Complete, Simplified Workflow Increase press productivity 25% or more. Reduce color makeready and setup time up to 75%. Keep records of which ink batches are used. Dramatically reduce ink inventory and storage needs.

Color Measurement with DeltaCam Also launched at drupa 2016, QuadTech’s Color Measurement with DeltaCam makes advanced, inline spectral measurement affordable. For about half the cost of other inline systems, you can utilize accurate, automated L*a*b* measurement on film, paper or board—ensuring that all printed product is within your customers’ color specifications.

Inspection System

ColorTrack’s Seven “Color Management Breakthroughs”

The modernized Inspection System sets a new standard for fast, easy detection of print defects. The advanced 100% inspection technology has been “reimagined from the ground up,” based on user feedback, to create a better process for the detection and disposition of defects. Utilizing the most advanced algorithms in the industry, the Inspection System can detect a wide variety of defects such as ink spots, register/ color variation, content issues, and streaks.

• Pre-Laminate/Post-Laminate Color Support

About QuadTech, Inc.

According to QuadTech President Karl Fritchen, “ColorTrack’s potential to have a big impact on the industry attracted enthusiastic crowds when we first launched at drupa last summer. Since then, our developers and engineers have completed more new features that we believe will change the way printers manage color quality.”

Define both pre- and post-laminate color targets within the job, measure color inline, and use both targets to manage the difference on-press. This first and only automated workflow solution replaces cumbersome “trial and error” methods of achieving post-laminate color that is within your customers’ specifications.

• ColorTrack Press-Side Recipe Correction Module For the first time, it is now possible to track ink quality and manage 4 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

IPEX Launches Design Challenge Delivering on its “print in action” vision, IPEX has announced a design challenge aimed at apprentice graphic arts designers and students to create part of its 2017 advertising campaign. Apprentices and students, and designers working in the wider community aged under 25, are invited to develop and submit a design of a visitor promotion advertisement for IPEX. The winning designs will be run in the trade press over a five-month period. Entries will be judged by a panel comprising a publisher, marketing experts, graphics designers and chaired by IPEX Event Director, Rob Fisher. “We felt this is a great way to engage with people who are currently completing apprenticeships in graphic arts and print companies, and with those designers aged under 25 who are working in the wider print community. It gives them an opportunity to showcase their work on an international stage”, commented Fisher. The closing date for entries is 30th April and the winner will receive a MacBook Air with runners-up receiving gift vouchers to redeem for equipment of their own choice. Prizes will be presented at a ceremony held on the main stage of this years’ IPEX on November 1st. Professor Brian Minards, principal of Harrogate and London-based design consultants Minards Associates, and a Professor in the School of Advertising at Academy of Art University, San Francisco, said; “Print is where design meets the physical world, so to my mind it is vital that designers learn what it can do for them. This competition allows for young apprentices and students to experience what it’s like to produce designs that will work across different, integrated mediums.” The competition is closely aligned with the Future Skills Zone, another new key feature at IPEX this year, and aimed specifically to help printers attract new talent into the industry. Full details of the competition can be found on the IPEX website http:// www.ipex.org/designchallenge

Ipex 2017:

Roster Continues To Fill As Friedheim, Morgana, Pressxchange Sign Up

International brands are confirming their confidence in IPEX 2017’s new format and vision, with major signings rolling in consistently as the year develops. Since the New Year, Friedheim, Morgana Systems, part of the Plockmatic Group and pressXchange have committed to significant stand space at the show, which will return to its business-centric NEC location when it begins on October 31st this year. 8 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

Long respected as the industry’s major sales event, IPEX’s exhibitor profile is gaining momentum and shows no signs of letting up. Friedheim International, which supplies a range of renowned finishing equipment and solutions for processing applications in commercial and digital print, binding, packaging and converting, has hailed its return later this year. Friedheim’s Mark Bristow, Managing Director, comments: “As a longstanding supporter of IPEX, the announcement of its return to its traditional home at the NEC is very

welcome. “The venue’s central location, as well as the amount of equipment that will be on display at IPEX from ourselves and other leading suppliers, only goes to highlight the importance of the event. The fact of having so many processing solutions for different market sectors on view under one roof will guarantee a healthy attendance.” Morgana Systems, which manufactures in the UK but sells its innovative post-press equipment

world-wide, has also signed up to IPEX 2017. Ray Hillhouse, Vice President for Offline Business at Morgana Systems, says: “IPEX is still the exhibition that the UK print industry talks about, looks forward to, and the one that people will put in their diaries as the show to attend. “As a company we enjoyed a very successful IPEX at the last outing of the event and are looking forward to a very positive outcome this year as well. It’s the ideal event for launching new products to UK printers, as we have proved at previous shows, and we expect some new equipment developments around that time.” The potential for engagement with a broad print community is also crucial to pressXchange, the leading international site for used printing and packaging equipment sales, which serves more than 170,000 users in 180 countries. Zeke Taiwo, Sales and Marketing Director at pressXchange, is enthusiastic about the event: “We’re delighted to partner with IPEX 2017 as it’s great for us to align with an event that has such a long history of success on an international level.

“IPEX offers a perfect platform for people in the industry to get together face-to-face and therefore helps us to deliver on our own focus: connecting people within the used printing equipment market and being the go-to place for used machines. We will fully support IPEX in attracting as large a crowd as possible for 2017 and help to make it their most popular event yet – which in turn will give a positive boost to the industry.” In addition to its stand, pressXchange will welcome visitors to a business lounge area, where they can explore, with the company’s professionals, various commercial decisions based on used equipment. Printers may be looking to release capital via a trusted channel by selling older machinery, or to enter a vertical market cost-effectively with a second-user purchase. The pressXchange-IPEX partnership acknowledges current equipment strategies in the industry and adds to the show’s rounded view of

printers’ likely investment pathways in 2017. Also in attendance will be IPIA, the association for Trade Manufacturers and Professional Print Buyers, which will bring a Trade Village of its Associate Members to IPEX 2017. Supporting trade print and marketing communication buyers and suppliers, the IPIA’s reputation for international sourcing and relationships with print buyers adds greatly to a roster of visionaries dedicated to creating a show of value to printers of all denominations. “Each company in this round of new signings has a history of promoting print and championing the industry,” comments Rob Fisher, IPEX 2017’s Event Director. “With exhibitor bookings rolling in and some highly original content programming still to come, we are confident that IPEX 2017 will be an event where there will be something inspiring, commercially attractive and educational for everyone.” Printing Review | May-June 2017 | 9

路 Post-press Converting Pavilion

About AIP 2018 On October 24-28, 2018, the 7th All in Print China will be held on schedule in Shanghai New International Expo Center. There will be 8 thematic pavilions in line with the popular topics, including pavilions for digital pre-press, comprehensive printing, post press converting, packaging equipment, ink & innovative materials, label industry, flexo printing technology and innovation factory. The area of AIP 2018 will reach 110,000m2, and it is expected to attract more than 1,000 exhibitors and 100,000 visitors to attend the event. See more information at: www.allinprint.com.

8 Thematic Pavilions: 路 Digital Pre-press Pavilion In 2015, the global market value of the digital printing accounts for 13.9% of that of the printing and packaging industry, and the figure is expected to reach 17.4% in 2020. Thanks to the cloud computing, big data, and mobile Internet technology, the digital printing industry is entering a new domain with huge market potential, high added value and productization, and has quickly merged with the traditional printing industry. With the rapid development of digital technology, the pre-press process has become more and more digitalized. A digital work-flow featuring computer integration has come into being, CTP technology has been widely used, and the digitalized revolution has penetrated into the traditional printing industry. In the Digital Pre-press Pavilion, visitors will acquaint themselves with the new trend of digital printing, try its new application, explore new opportunities and grasp new digital technology for pre-press. 10 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

路 Comprehensive Printing Pavilion With the successive slide of international market, especially when China, the printing powerhouse, enters the new normal featuring slowed growth and intensified adjustment, the outdated capacity will be forced out of market gradually, and the high-end printing equipment, as well as innovative equipment with digital, smart and green features will be the routine of the industry. Due to rising human cost for printing services, printing enterprises have tried to benefit from the equipment, so it is inevitable that more intelligent, automated equipment will be employed in transformation and upgrading of enterprises. Printing equipment manufacturers, through more research and innovative technology materials and improved automation, have seen noticeable progress in technical level. The Comprehensive Printing Pavilion will showcase the latest findings

The development of science and technology and the fierce competition of the market call for development of printing in a faster, better and cheaper direction. After the pre-press and printing begin digital, intelligent and online operation, post-press converting has become the bottleneck restricting the rapid development of the printing industry. Therefore, the automated and intelligent post-press converting is of great significance for the entire printing industry. Now the digital technology has revolutionized the postpress toward automation and intelligent operation: automatic connection for higher quality and efficiency; the surface finishing and diversified processes (cutting, polishing, stamping, embossing) for higher value. In this pavilion, you will have a close contact with the era of post-press converting 4.0.

路 Packaging Equipment Pavilion With the development of food, cosmetic and other packaging applications, the global packaging market is growing. The data show that in 2016, the output of global packaging industry increased to about $820 billion. Among them, the paper packaging will continue to lead the global packaging market, with the total output value nearly reaching $250 billion, while the rigid plastic package output value was over $200 billion, and that of soft packaging rose to $163 billion. The booming packaging market offers excellent opportunity for packaging equipment suppliers. How can international brands expand in emerging markets and how can Chinese manufacturing enterprises improve the equipment automation, and intelligence and fine operation to reach the inter-

national level in terms of technology? This Pavilion will showcase the sophisticated domestic and international packaging equipment. At the same time, there will be an area specifically for corrugated equipment, focusing on technical solutions of advanced corrugated packaging.

· Ink & Innovative Materials Pavilion With the increasing awareness of environmental protection, green printing is the inevitable trend of the printing industry. The development and application of environmentally friendly printing materials can effectively promote the development of green printing, and help printing companies to generate more value-added ideas. Green materials have become a consensus in the industry, but the use of green materials is just at a primitive stage of the green application. In the future more attention should be paid to innovating the new green auxiliary materials, thus making the green concept penetrate deeper in the production. In this pavilion, visitors will find all kinds of innovative and environmentally friendly printing supplies, such as paper, plates, ink, etc.

· Label Industry Pavilion Statistics show that, in 2015, China’s total output value of the label printing industry surpassed 35 billion yuan, up 7.8% in contrast to 2014, while the total output of selfadhesive materials surpassed 4.6 billion m2, up 5.6% over the previous year. From a global perspective, the growth rate of label market in the Asia Pacific region

is by far over the global average, being the fastest growing market as well. It is expected that by 2019, the global label market value will increase from $32.7 billion in 2014 to $41.6 billion. Asia, the world’s largest label printing market, will account for 41% of the global label market share. The Label Industry Pavilion will be an epitome of Asian label printing industry.

· Flexo Technology Pavilion Flexo printing technology has developed for over 30 years in China. Flexographic printing only had an insignificant market share in the past for its poor quality in comparison with that of the offset printing. With progress in equipment and technology, however, the flexo printing quality has greatly improved and gradually entered the rank of high quality printing. Besides, it shows distinctive advantage in efficiency, environmental protection, safety and health, so it is gaining increasingly higher market awareness and acceptance. Today, flexo printing

technology has been able to compete with offset printing, gravure printing, embossing and digital printing technology in many areas, and China’s flexo market will usher in a new era of development. Flexo Technology Pavilion will familiarize you with the best practice and application of the flexo printing technology.

· Innovation Factory “Innovation Factory” made its debut in the 6th All in Print China in 2016, enchanting visitors with 30 printing and packaging solutions, 24 sharing speeches, frontier application scheme and exquisite booth design in an exhibition area of 1,500m2. The Innovation Factory will continue to delve into such topics the cultural creativity of printing, green environment, future technology, 3D fab + print, intelligent manufacturing and Internet Plus, focusing on the latest technology, application and future of the printing industry. This contrasts with a mean annual growth of 2.4% for 2012-2017 reflecting the opening of until now

underdeveloped countries to the full range of modern print products and technologies. This expansion is occurring against a more static backdrop for the print industry generally, with annual global growth pegged at a more sober 2% as traditional segments decline. As a consequence the Middle East and North Africa can be seen as an attractive strategic growth target for international print equipment and consumable suppliers. Steve Hill, Smithers Pira’s Operations Director EMEA, says: ‘The drop off in demand for high volume print products – like books

and newspapers – in core European and North America markets, means the print industry needs to find new markets. And from a number of perspectives MENA is very attractive for this. We are seeing global print firms opening new offices and reporting sales to the region, and local print service providers diversifying their product offering as they rapidly adopt new technologies. ‘Of course, selling effectively into MENA has some unique challenges but our research shows the demand is and will be there; and there are specific opportunities now, like the opening up of

the post-sanctions Iranian market, and transition economies moving towards food sold in supermarkets in locally printed packaging.’ MENA is not divorced from wider print technology trends, with digital – inkjet and toner – output set to rise at the fastest rate. Overall MENA output will rise from 2.61 trillion A4 sheet equivalents in 2017 to 2.76 trillion in 2022. This is a more modest 2.8% annual growth, but emphasises the value-adding potential and higher per unit print service providers will be able to realise with a new generation of print, pre-press, and finishing equipment. Cloud-based MWM Production Planning Tool allows Amedia Trykk to coordinate six printing plants Amedia is Norway’s largest publisher of local media titles – with a daily audience of more than two million readers and users. For its printing activities in Norway Amedia Trykk og Distribusjon, one of Norway’s biggest coldset newspaper printers, runs seven printing plants spread across the whole country – from Bodø in the far north to Larvik, 1200 kilometers southward. To synchronize and coordinate the overall production Amedia Trykk og Distribusjon are using MWM’s cloud-based Production Planning tool (PPC). It supports in six of those printing plants the planning for around 65 titles. Amedia Trykk have been a customer to MWM Group (Stockholm, Sweden) for over ten years. MWM CopyTrack is used for monitoring printing production in real time and collect production data for reports and analysis. Amedia also have been using the former Java based planning system for several years, that now is being replaced by the new production planning system PPC. Started in 2014 the project at Amedia has helped to develop the new cloud based system for production planning. Project management was on the customer side led by Ketil Haugland, CTO Amedia Trykk og Distribusjon, and at MWM Group by Philip Pettersson. PPC allows Amedia Trykk to plan titles, printing jobs and deliveries. Inserts can be booked directly on titles. Most of inserts for Amedia are imported to the system from the Norwegian national insert booking system. The newspapers are using a web portal to enter information into the system regarding circulations and number of pages. All productions are transferred to CopyTrack via interface. In CopyTrack Amedia are monitoring the production in real time and collect production data for reports and analysis.

and day operations. The scheduling and planning has become easier not only for production staff and project manager but also made it easier for our vendors and customers. We now have, in every single order, detailed information on the customer, product name, issues, number of pages, paper grade, circulations, etc. Other valuable information is that we easily get a clear view of coverage and capacity utilization.”

PPC at a glance MWM Production Planning is a cloud-based service which provides an overview of the use of production resources at one or more printing plants. The planning includes prepress, press and mailroom. The information can be accessed through the internet by all parties involved. MWM Production Planning simplifies planning for production planners and project managers. An order describes the product, customer, product name, editions, paginations, substrate, print runs, etc. The booking is sent to a production planner responsible for allocating resources in the press hall and mailroom (and prepress if relevant). Based on the product description and the chosen equipment, the system calculates production times for the various processes. Naturally, the planner can change the times suggested by the system. The production planner sets how detailed the planning should be, whether down to the level of folder or printing unit and whether mailroom and prepress should be planned by line or by machine. One advantage of detailed planning is that maintenance can be planned for un-booked machines in the press hall and mailroom, in conjunction with production. With a common and comprehensive production plan, it is easy to calculate production times for each printed product. MWM Production Planning includes a customer portal where print clients can update current production information. This reduces the number of mistakes and saves time and money for the client as well as the printing plant.

Ketil Haugland, CTO Amedia Trykk og Distribusjon, says: “The Production Planning Cloud gives us a great support for both our night 18 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

Happy 21st! NZME upgrades to meet needs of a changed industry

A

large order to refit and automate colour control on a 21-year-old newspaper press on “the other side of the world” is a special one for Q.I. Press Controls for two reasons. For one thing, it’s the classic scenario of the grand old press installed when print was king – and primarily to print a single flagship title – turned in a post-consolidation industry to produce a variety of publications with greater demands and shorter runs. And secondly, there’s a personal cachet for QIPC director Menno Jansen in delivering a much better system than the one in which – as it happens – he was involved before establishing the Netherlandsbased company he now leads with Erik van Holten. The big news is that NZME Print in Auckland, New Zealand, has commissioned Q.I. Press Controls to undertake a complete retrofit of its Goss HT70 press, delivering a 61-camera system to automate not only register and cut-off, but also colour itself using QIPC’s IDS-3D technology. Installed to print the flagship daily New Zealand Herald for then owners Wilson & Horton, the double-width Goss press now prints a variety of other work including NZME dailies the Bay of Plenty Times and The Northern Advo20 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

cate alongside contract work for Fairfax New Zealand, with whom a merger has been agreed subject to regulatory approval. The Fairfax work includes 30,000 circulation daily Waikato Times, 25,000 Sunday News and about 55,000 copies of the national Sunday Star Times – also printed at other Fairfax sites – with these and NZME’s Herald on Sunday produced side-by-side and to the same production deadlines. All of which has put a good deal of pressure on a site which prides itself on its culture and its commitment to quality. Last year the Ellerslie plant was admitted to WAN-Ifra’s International Newspaper

Color Quality Club for a second term, a runner up in the PANPA print site of the year competition, and among winners in the annual SWUG NZ print quality awards. The 1995 press comprises 12 fourhigh towers and three mono units, with three folders, and Q.I. Press Controls will install 37 of its mRC3D cameras for cut-off control, a further 24 IDS-3D cameras for colour and register control, and its IQM quality management system. All cameras are equipped with the AIMS system for automatic cleaning of the optics. The retrofit will replace a register guidance system

installed when the UK-built press was new, and which Menno Jansen recalls as “my first large sale” when he was working for the supplier prior to setting up Q.I. Press Controls. A 24-hour air journey from QIPC’s headquarters in Oosterhout, the Netherlands, Ellerslie, its people, and the “very interesting” New Zealand market therefore holds a special place in his heart. Menno Jansen says has visited the newspaper print site at least every year the last six years: “I knew that QIPC could deliver a system that would better meet their needs, and on my last visit I even had a service technician go there to explain how we would solve everything,” he says. “I am very pleased therefore, that after all that effort, NZME Print has finally chosen to do business with us. To be able to install our modern IDS-3D and mRC-3D sys-

tems makes it a very special order for me personally.” That pleasure is also founded on confidence in the QIPC product: “Other parties simply could not offer what we offer,” he says, pointing to the versatility of the cameras, which can perform all the necessary functions with only two cameras per tower. In addition to the automation equipment, NZME has chosen QIPC’s IQM analysis and management information system, which uses metadata to analyse the quality of the printed product and provide insights into future use. NZME’s aim is to raise the efficiency levels of the pressroom through reduced waste, set-up time and resource. The efficiency improvements will increase the company’s competitiveness in the newspaper print market, according to opera-

tions manager Russell Wieck. The new technology will enable NZME to source shorter-run commercial work that is currently not viable for the large double width presses. Russell Wieck– who joined parent company APN in Toowoomba, Australia, in 1977, moving to the New Zealand Herald in 2004 – says the NZME culture is focused on improvement, whether it is quality, waste reduction, timeliness, staff morale, skills or personal growth and the united team goal is to raise the bar at every opportunity. With the 2017 print schedules a far cry from the 300,000 daily 80-pages-plus broadsheet newspapers the press originally produced, the new Q.I. Press Controls technology will set new standards for both high-volume work and the

small-pagination, low volume inlinefinished jobs and specialty publications it also handles. Beyond these savings and the system’s quality and reliability, there is also the peace of mind that comes with the knowledge that, should problems occur, help from the QIPC service desk is always available… even on opposite sides of the world.

Rotomail doubles book-of-one capacity with second Tecnau Libra 800 Rotomail has invested in a second Tecnau Libra 800 soft-cover book binding system to expand its production capacity for short runs and book on demand.

Rotomail was established in 1996 as a Print on Demand service provider. In 2000 the company became one of the first adopters of inkjet technology, introducing color and developing trans-promotional applications. In 2003 Rotomail started diversifying into direct mail, commercial print and books market segments, and contributed to the development of the first Libra 800. In 2016 Rotomail installed the new HP T490 inkjet HDNA press, becoming the first user worldwide of High Definition Nozzle Architecture. In the Milan-based factory, rolls will be printed on the HP PageWide presses and finished nearline on Libra 800 in a roll-to-finished-book integrated process. The modular system has been configured by Rotomail with one input channel from roll, along with slit merge and 22 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

dual web cutter to produce variable book-blocks in height, width and thickness. Variable book blocks are automatically delivered to Libra VB Variable Binder connected online to Libra VT Variable Three-Knife Trimmer. The system feeds covers from roll and cuts them down in length and width with spine scoring according to the book block being processed, for complete variability book by book in the same run, minimized waste and without manual handling. The finishing process is integrated with Rotomail proprietary software “Bronte providing a complete process control including order entry, production optimization and output tracking. The Tecnau Libra 800 integrates a networked management system for process control, remote diagnostics, statistical evaluations and integration to other solutions, bringing the IoT (Internet of Things) within the realm

of industrial applications for smart manufacturing. Tecnau is honored by the continuing Rotomail partnership as we strive to be ahead of the technology curve in book finishing. Rotomail provided a brilliant contribution to the original Libra 800 design back in 2008, and we are proud that after eight years they judge that the continuous development of Libra 800 makes it still the leading book-binding technology in the market for short runs and book-of-one production. Stefano De Marco, Tecnau Sales & Marketing Director EMEA Tecnau Libra 800 advantages go beyond efficient and flexible printing. Tecnau aims for the Libra 800 to completely transform book production for short runs and book on demand production. Libra 800 makes it possible to reorganize book production workflow by printing only the books actually sold, producing books by contract

rather than by format, significantly reducing inventory and optimizing logistics. Market insights indicate that book printers are increasingly averaging run lengths between 250 and 500 copies, up from averages around 700-1000 copies per run only two years ago, and 15003000 copies five years ago. If that trend continues, a solution especially developed for short-run or book of one production will be the best investment to meet current needs and anticipate future market developments. There are also other segments where book of one or short-run productions are an opportunity, for example, certain catalogs, limited editions, custom books, self-publishing and more in general, publications collected by web-to-print portals. The Libra 800 solution is the only system on the market together offering such levels of variability while maintaining production speed up to 800 books/hour.

E

lectronics For Imaging, Inc. (Nasdaq:EFII) now offers one of the industry’s most robust portfolios of digital textile production printers, and EFI signage customers, such as French digital printing specialist CIDI and U.S.-based Imagine! Express, are taking advantage of significant, profitable business opportunities. EFI’s portfolio of digital fabric printers includes the EFI™ VUTEk® FabriVU® series, a product line featured at the upcoming Fespa and PacPrint industry tradeshows that is designed to get customers into the soft signage business quickly with high image quality and true production-level throughput. EFI soft signage printers also include the EFI Reggiani ONE and PRO printer series for established soft signage producers looking to aggressively develop and drive more profitability with outstanding image quality and higher-volume capacity. All of these products leverage the industry leading expertise of EFI Reggiani – a market leader with 70 years of experience in textile printing – together with EFI’s recognized expertise in workflow, color management and business management solutions.

500% increase in capacity with “the best full solution” Imagine! Express, a company that serves retail, museum, tradeshow and corporate décor customers, had been using a fleet of several older-model printers that were nearing end-of-life. The company chose to move from a primarily direct-to-fabric dispersion printing technology to transfer printing, acquiring 3.4-meter EFI VUTEk FabriVU 340 and EFI Reggiani PRO 340 printers. The two production devices are boosting the company’s quality, while increasing capacity by 500%. “As we looked to move down this

new path, we targeted the transfer printing model that we believe gives you the sharpest, cleanest look with the greatest depth of color,” explained Mike Lecus, the company’s president. “While our direct dispersion printer still had some life in it, we decided to replace it with the FabriVU 340 to put in place a more strategic workflow committed fully to transfer printing. “By adding the EFI Reggiani PRO 340 as well, we are able to increase our capacity by 500% without the need for additional staff in the printing department,” Lecus added. “Following our due diligence, we felt that EFI presented the best full solution for our business.” VUTEk FabriVU printers have proven to be especially successful in helping signage and display companies move into higher-value soft signage display work as they offer an unparalleled combination of productivity and quality. And, a new, 5.2-meter soft signage model, the EFI VUTEk 520 printer, has already seen a number of installations in Europe and North America among customers now offering larger displays, theatrical backdrops and other oversized graphics without having to seam together multiple panels.

markets with good margins – especially the interior decoration market. The printer gives us tremendous flexibility to help them in terms of the range of textiles we can offer, and it allows us to provide levels of responsiveness and print quality that few can match today.”

The industry’s only end-to-end digital print workflow and printer offering Complementing the VUTEk FabriVU and Reggiani ONE and PRO printers, EFI has the industry’s only complete end-to-end workflow available for signage production, from advanced webto-print design and eCommerce software that integrates with EFI Fiery® digital front ends offering industry-leading color management and productivity tools, to a comprehensive and certified EFI Midmarket Print Suite with awardwinning Pace™ MIS/ERP software at its core, for highly accurate scheduling, estimating, accounting and more in superwide-format graphics production. “There are many advantages to soft signage,” according to Marco Boer, vice president of digital print

analyst company I.T. Strategies. “Not only does fabric signage provide a luxury look and feel, but there also are significant economic benefits to production, shipping and storage since they can be easily folded or rolled and typically weigh less than conventional vinyl. We see many opportunities in the sign and display graphics industry for increased adoption of textile printing technologies, which have advanced significantly in recent years.”

About EFI EFI™ is a global technology company, based in Silicon Valley, and is leading the worldwide transformation from analog to digital imaging. Printsystem trusts in Tecnau for automatic cutting Printsystem GmbH has just put an automatic Tecnau cutting line into operation at its headquarters in Heimsheim, near Stuttgart (Germany). The company will use the Tecnau line to process the output from a newly installed Océ ColorStream 6900 Chroma Twin inkjet web press from Canon.

26 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

E

stablished in 1979, Printsystem currently employs more than 50 people in Heimsheim and at a branch in downtown Berlin. Most of its production is digital. In addition to the new inkjet press, Printsystem also has 14 sheetfed digital printing systems and one sheetfed offset press. Industrial enterprises, publishers, advertising agencies, educational institutions, public authorities, ministries and – last but not least – the German Bundestag and the European Central Bank are among the customers of this family owned firm. The main

emphasis of the portfolio is on low to medium-volume print-on-demand jobs as well as end-to-end production of technical documentation, educational materials, magazines, books, catalogs, brochures and official documents. Printsystem operates the new Tecnau cutting line as a near-line installation adjacent to the inkjet press. The line is configured with an Unwinder 550, a Cutter c23, a Stacker s25, an exit conveyor and a waste extraction unit. The printed web is precisely cut in 1-up paper

sheets stacked and ready for binding without any additional side trimming.

New Tecnau Stacker s25: a key component in repeatable product quality The new Tecnau s25 high performance stacker gently grips the sheeted output stacking a variety of coated or uncoated stocks from 40 to 300 gsm with ±0.5 mm accuracy at high speed. Tecnau has equipped the Stacker s25 with a new gripper system. This system transports the sheets that are output by the cutter at high speeds carefully and safely to the stacker’s stop device and brings them to a standstill. The gripper mechanism prevents damage to the prints, especially in heavy ink coverage applications. The Stacker s25 is thus a natural choice for graphic arts production. “We were looking for a high performance cutting line to support

our entry into web printing with the ColorStream 6900. We chose Tecnau because, in our opinion, they offer very good technology and excellent value for money. In terms of ease of operation, quality and flexibility, the Tecnau line meets our requirements perfectly,” says Oliver Harfensteller, a member of the Printsystem Management Board. “We’re delighted that our automatic cutting line is helping Printsystem to succeed in the inkjet business. It’s a reliable, robust solution for high performance cutting and stacking that perfectly complements the capabilities of the production inkjet press,” comments Robert Gubo, Area Manager Germany and Switzerland at Tecnau. Just like the inkjet press, the Tecnau cutting line installed at Printsystem can handle and process a broad array of materials. Apart from offset and recycled papers weighing between 50 to 130

gsm, it is also used for coated stocks ranging from 115 to 130 gsm. “Since the Tecnau line works extremely precisely, we can cut a lot of our products to size straight away, eliminating extra trimming typically required, for example, for applications such as wire-o or plastic comb binding,” Harfensteller explains. “We save both time and money.” Highly satisfied with the overall system, comprised of the inkjet web press and the Tecnau cutting line, Printsystem now plans to pursue its business with direct mail and personalized products more intensively. “Direct mail has been a comparatively small market segment for us up to now. We want to take advantage of the possibilities that the new line gives us to get ahead in this market and leverage its tech-

nical refinements to realize further efficiency gains and value added for our customers,” Harfensteller emphasizes. About Tecnau Tecnau offers a complete product portfolio dedicated to paper handling, monitoring, processing and finishing for the digital printing industry. We are devoted to providing integrated solutions to support the broadest array of applications for Transactional Printing, TransPromo, Direct Mail, Publishing, Graphic Arts, Book on Demand and Short Run. Global service and around-the-clock support help ensure our reputation as the industry’s reliability leader. Our products increase productivity, cut labor and paper costs, and even make new applications possible - Tecnau solutions truly empower digital print to help you do more with less.

Well-attended symposium at KBA-Sheetfed in Radebeul

Updates for print professionals interested in the future-oriented LED-UV technology • • • •

KBA LED-UV Symposium underlines the leading role of KBA-Sheetfed in the field of LED-UV Enthusiastic users report on new business models, opportunities for differentiation and marketing strategies Live demos with LED-UV applications for commercial print and packaging Premiere: Industrial production with autonomous printing thanks to ErgoTronic AutoRun on a KBA Rapida 106 perfector • Premiere: Innovative rotary die-cutter KBA Rapida RDC 106 for the first time with automatic stripping for efficient post-production in commercial and packaging applications

Last month, almost 300 existing and prospective users of the still relatively new LED-UV technology met at KBA-Sheetfed in Radebeul to pick up first-hand information on the current state of development. Alongside printers from 21 different countries, numerous representatives of the supplier industry were also present. 30 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

K

BA-Sheetfed is one of the international technology leaders in the field of LED-UV. The first Rapida 106 with LED dryers went into production in mid-2014. Further milestones included the first medium-format perfector for 4-over-4 production with LED-UV at the end of 2014 and the first Rapida large format installation in 2015. In the meantime, some 50 half-, medium- and large-format Rapidas with LED drying are in use around the world. The majority of these installations can be found in Germany, Japan and France. But in Great

Britain, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Poland, the USA and other countries, too, Rapidas with LED-UV facilities are proving increasingly popular, especially among commercial printers. Alongside classic five- and six-colour coater presses, numerous eight-colour perfectors have also been equipped with this future-oriented drying technology.

Process benefits speak for themselves Enthusiastic KBA users have already discovered the benefits of LED-UV both for their own companies and for their print customers. Environmental friendliness and short delivery times are just two of many. Further important aspects include: - 50 per cent energy savings compared to HR-UV or IR/hot-air drying for coating applications; further savings potential can be realised through job-specific matching of the active dryer format in both the length and width directions - Up to 20 per cent less waste through the avoiding of scratches and set-off - Fewer quality complaints due to drying effects or colour changes which only become visible later in the overall production process - Up to 4 per cent paper savings - 10 to 20 per cent higher production speeds in perfecting mode

-

Faster job turnaround as the sheets can passed on immediately for further processing - Lower rejection rates thanks to the reduced risk of fold cracking in the printed image - Powder and protective coatings are no longer necessary - Fewer problems and shorter cleaning times in downstream finishing There are nevertheless critical voices to be heard in the branch. Objections such as - higher investment outlay for the dryers, - higher ink costs and - poorer de-inking of the printed products in later recycling are often discussed. One important objective of the symposium at KBA-Sheetfed was thus to demonstrate the potential of the technology, to present current and expected developments and improvements in dialogue with the supplier

industry, and to relieve the anxieties and reservations which naturally accompany any new technology.

Panel discussions with users and suppliers Three panel discussion sessions were moderated by Klaus-Peter Nicolay as an independent print expert, branch analyst and publisher of the magazine Druckmarkt. The first session with specialists from KBA-Sheetfed and further suppliers addressed the available system technology. Reports on practical experience, design solutions, handling recommendations and service topics were brought together under the headline “What does the LED-UV technology offer for a modern print company. Tailored consumables packages were the topic of a second round of discussions with representatives from Toyo, Actega, Scheufelen, PaPrinting Review | May-June 2017 | 31

pyrus, StoraEnso and Igepa. Alongside recent further developments in inks and coatings, the manufacturers spoke about standardised measuring and analysis methods, health and consumer protection, migration and food contact compliance, as well as the dimensional stability and de-inking properties of substrates. According to Dr. Wolfgang Rauh, head of department for materials and environmental protection at FOGRA, the success of de-inking seems to be dependent on the particular combination of ink and paper. In case of doubt, therefore, it is always advisable to consult with the ink and paper suppliers concerned. The third module was reserved for the users: Ingo Klotz from Druckerei Joh. Walch (Augsburg/Germany), JĂźrgen Ostendorf from Hofmann Druck (NĂźrnberg/Germany), Patrick Leus from Albe de Coker (Antwerp, Belgium) and Jonas Hoffmann from FarbWerk (Detmold/ 32 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

Germany) described the role played by the LED-UV technology in their business concepts. They also compared the ROI of LED-UV to that of conventional alternatives, and provided information on the attainable quality standards and energy efficiency when using the technology. One of the aspects mentioned was the extended colour space, which often spares the need to print spot colours. Significantly higher densities are achieved and the print quality on uncoated papers comes close to that otherwise associated with coated stocks. As a result, new customers can be targeted in the premium quality segment. At the same time, new marketing strategies and approaches are required. LED-UV printing, however, is able to serve as a strong regional USP, enabling users to stand out above their competitors. Many of the participants confirmed that the LED-UV technology had opened to door to new markets.

Print demonstrations confirm the experience of users A series of print demonstrations confirmed the reported user experience. During the production on a Rapida 75 PRO and two Rapida 106 presses, the symposium guests were able to monitor energy consumption in real time via VisuEnergy. On the five-colour Rapida 75 PRO coater press, the focus was placed on production on uncoated papers with full ink coverage. It was also shown how the jobs could be passed on for immediate finishing on a Perfecta 132 TS high-speed cutter. The production of inmould and self-adhesive labels, with and without cold foil, was presented on a six-colour Rapida 106 with coater tower. After the job with cold foil transfer, the press was converted for production with an opaque white primer. The final job

was a cigarette pack forme on metallised card. All three images illustrated how LED-UV is gaining an every greater foothold also in packaging printing.

rounded off a very busy and informative day.

KBA then presented an absolute world first, namely LED-UV drying in conjunction with autonomous printing on an eight-colour Rapida 106 with an additional coater. “ErgoTronic AutoRun enables printing and makeready processes to run without manual intervention in accordance with a predefined job list. The operator must only ensure that the required substrates, plates and other consumables are available. The cover and six sections of the recently published customer magazine KBA Report were produced in ultra-short runs on the makeready world champion Rapida 106. While doing so, the Rapida live app was used by the operator to maintain information on material and batch assignments. As a further highlight, KBA-Sheetfed demonstrated the die-cutting of packaging on a Rapida RDC 106 rotary die-cutter: For the first time with automatic stripping, a world novelty in a rotary process. After a fast job changeover, production continued with the kiss-cutting of self-adhesive labels. Job changeovers on the Rapida RDC 106 are significantly faster than on a flat-bed diecutter – a further plus for the rotary die-cutter for corresponding applications. Messe Düsseldorf extends International Portfolio of Trade Fairs for the Printing and Packaging Industries

Partnership with IPAP Tehran – Iran’s Printing and Packaging Industry Exhibition Agreed Messe Düsseldorf, the successful organiser of leading international trade fairs for the printing and packaging industries, extends its portfolio to include a promising event in the Middle East: IPAP Tehran powered by drupa will be held for the first time from 12 to 15 October 2017 at Iran’s most modern exhibition centre: Shahre-Aftab (Exhibiran International). Staged in cooperation with the Iranian organiser BRP, the trade fair targets all suppliers along the entire value chain for printing technologies from the segments of Prepress/Print, Premedia/Multichannel, Postpress, Converting and Packaging, Materials, Equipment, Services, Infrastructure. Other trade fairs held concurrently are pacprocess Tehran and iFood Expo.

I

ran has been an extremely attractive market since the international sanctions were eased in early 2016 because its economy faces backlog demand in every area. An emerging region with some 80 million inhabitants – experts expect 12% economic growth by late 2017 alone, projects with foreign investment worth a 3-digit billion amount are in the pipeline. Its population of eager consumers increasingly demand high-quality print and packaging products, which cannot be manufactured in a competitive quality with the existing, often obsolete technology used by local companies. Even though the local printing industry is quite well developed by comparison with many other markets in the Near and Middle East, it has now come under high pressure to invest. This opens up huge opportunities especially for European suppliers because their products have traditionally been highly appreciated in Iran. Of outstanding importance in this context are packaging and offset printing presses as well as developments in digital print applications because these machines have to be imported as a matter of principle. “Counting over 32,000 offset print shops, to the tune

38 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

of 50,000 digital print service providers and some 65,000 other upstream suppliers to the printing industry the Iranian market holds attractive potential for further business development. IPAP – Iran’s Printing and Packaging Industry Exhibition is a well-established trade fair already, which until now was held in Mashhad, the country’s second largest city, located approximately 850 kilometers east of Tehran. Moving to Tehran and cooperating with drupa – the no.1 for printing technologies opens up new opportunities for growth and greater international reach. With our expertise we accompany interested companies on their way into an emerging region,” says Sabine Geldermann, Global Head of Print Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf. Shahr-e-Aftab (Exhibiran International) is Iran’s latest and biggest exhibition centre. Favourably located between Tehran City and the international airport with access to several motorways and also with connections to public transport, it fuses a capacity of 120,000 square metres in 16 exhibition halls with the latest technical equipment with traditional Persian landscaping as well as comprehensive services such as food service, hotels, banks and multi-storey car parks. The

central location also allows visitors from such neighbouring states as Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan, which have traditionally maintained close commercial ties with Iran, to visit the exhibition centre. This fact, of course, also benefits the exhibitors at IPAP Tehran for whom business opportunities also open up in those countries. Also forming part of IPAP Tehran is pacprocess Tehran, which targets companies from the packaging sector and related processing industries. pacprocess Tehran is an integral part of Messe Düsseldorf’s interpack alliance. Messe Düsseldorf has acquired its international competency in the printing and packaging industries especially by organising its two No. 1 trade fairs drupa and interpack. Besides drupa, it organises both its own trade fairs and, in cooperation with its subsidiaries, outstanding regional fairs for the print and media industry such as All in Print in Shanghai, Pack Print International in Bangkok, printpack alger in Algiers and indoprint in Jakarta, to name but a few. CROWN, World’s Leading Metal Packaging Company, Expands Use of Inspection Systems from AVT “100% detection of print defects by AVT’s Titan enables us to drastically improve printing quality” says Mr. Ugo Manghi, MPC Manager at CROWN Imballaggi Italia Engineer at CROWN Imballaggi Italia, comments: “AVT’s 100% inspection solution tremendously helps us in our standardization project, because it allows us to reduce the number of defects printed by revealing them to the operator as soon as they appear. We no longer trash out thousands of metal sheets. The system reveals each individual problem immediately. This represents substantial savings for the company, as we don’t have to destroy entire sheets.”

CROWN Imballaggi Italia – part of Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:CCK) (Crown) (www. crowncork.com), the world’s leading food metal packaging supplier – recently installed a new AVT Titan 100% inspection solution at its Calerno, Italy manufacturing plant.

our KBA 6-colour printing press for metal packaging. The installation in the Calerno plant was among the most important for our company. Our customers are among the bestknown brands in retail distribution. Quality is not a prerogative here, it is imperative.”

T

The Quality Imperative

he installation represents further growth in the collaboration between Crown and AVT – a market leader in print inspection and quality control solutions – that now includes Titan installations at various CROWN Packaging Europe production facilities. Designed to meet the specific needs of metal printing and decoration, AVT’s Titan is a state-of-the-art quality assurance and process control solution that provides 100% inspection and traceability of every printed metal sheet. Based on AVT’s advanced quality control algorithms, Titan detects the full spectrum of typical print defects, including colour variations, mis-registration (including varnish mis-registration), misprints, spots, text, streaks, scratches, splashes, scumming, edges, bends and more. These capabilities are a perfect match for Crown’s objectives, as Mr. Ugo Manghi, MPC Manager of the Food Division and Project Manager, explains: “AVT’s Titan was an essential complementary element to the installation of

“With the new high-speed KBA printing press operating 24 hours a day, manual inspection was no longer an option,” continues Mr. Manghi. “We quickly switched to AVT’s Titan 100% inspection solution. In Calerno, we can now offer our customers a complete service throughout the metal packaging production process, which also pays dividends when pursuing new business opportunities. When it came to choosing a print inspection solution, there was not a doubt in our minds that AVT offers the best solution for our needs.” Mr. Alessandro Silecchia, Process

He continues: “Moreover, we have dramatically increased production, Titan has become our electronic eye; it is far more accurate and faster than the human eye. We know we can fully rely on it so we are able to focus on other activities. The changeover was very smooth as well: Titan was remarkably easy to learn and master thanks to the excellent training we received from the AVT team.”

CROWN and AVT – A Robust Collaboration “We have built a very collaborative relationship with AVT,” concludes Mr. Manghi. “They followed us step by step through our process, trying to understand our needs and providing help to solve our problems. The result was a specific solution tailored to our needs. AVT also proved invaluable during the implementation: the team trained our operators to a very high standard with in-depth classroom sessions and practical, real-life scenarios. The whole project was well managed from the start. Our production kicked off smoothly and flawlessly. Much to the satisfaction of our operators and of the entire company, if I may add.” Printing Review | May-June 2017 | 39

The emotive advancement of the successful key visual originally developed for drupa 2016 put the industry in the right mood for the event in 2020. The design concept, implemented by Agentur Niehaus Knüwer and friends, refers to the dramatic changes the industry has encountered during the past few years: the new key visual signifies beauty, aesthetic appeal, creativity and depth. Sabine Geldermann, Director of drupa and Global Head Print Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf, explains the key visual’s exquisite appearance and tactile effect: „The delicate butterfly wings 40 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

symbolize departure, change – a transformation process that affects all industries, but particularly the traditional print industry, every company, everybody. Transformation moves companies to rethink their strategies, adapt to new processes and move into new business models – a change that also takes place in people’s minds. Different individuals have already moved into the focus of the new marketing campaign. On the one hand, it underlines the international alignment of the drupa trade fair, on the other, it shows that trade fairs stand for emotive power and experience and, last but not least, it shows that ”people are business”. The heads are surrounded by colour digits that symbolize the wide

variety of print applications. Below the slogan “embrace the future” you find the drupa 2020 invitation extended to exhibitors and visitors, who are welcome to experience and accept technological innovation, trends and future challenges, so as to implement them into their own corporate workflows and tap into new potential.“ With this strategy, drupa 2020 will write a new chapter in the 2016 success story and prove once again that no other event in this industry has a stronger international attraction and radiance. drupa 2020 will continue this strategic realignment and focus on future topics with major growth potential. The trade fair profile prescribes a

clearly defined structure, which encompasses the following product groups • Prepress / Print • Premedia /Multichannel • Post press / Converting / Packaging • Future Technologies • Materials • Equipment / Services / Infrastructure

Highlight topics: packaging production, functional printing, 3D printing, industrial printing In the wake of growing international markets and increasingly demanding requirements from the industry and manufacturers of branded products, the packaging production segment has again been selected as one of the most important topics for drupa 2020. Technological developments in packaging and labelling have engendered innovative solutions in the areas of customizing and personalization, while technologies such as smart and intelligent packaging, packaging design and finishing have become increasingly important. All of these developments are changing the industry. In order to assume an active and successful role in this competitive market, companies need to stay informed about the new technologies that many exhibitors will show at drupa 2020. At drupa 2020, packaging will have a special slot called Touchpoint Packaging. Launched at drupa 2016, this forum created quite a stir. It is organised and hosted in close cooperation with the European Packaging Design Association (epda), Europe’s leading association of brand and packaging designers. It will cover the entire packaging production chain from the brand, materials, design, print right through to finishing and sales. The interaction between all involved professions – branded products manufacturers, designers, material manufacturers and a high-calibre panel of companies from the printing and finishing industry – will turn this forum into a special place of inspiration where solutions and answers to relevant questions for future

developments will be presented. The future will become tangible in all its facets, and the focus will be on all that is new, unconventional and surprising. An event titled AMAZING, INSPIRING, EXCITING and UNEXPECTED hosted by Best Cases, innovative technology applications and visionary packaging solutions for different markets welcome visitors to an interactive brainstorming session with exhibitors. The forum addresses interested manufacturers of branded products and designers as well as companies from the packaging segment, who are provided with an opportunity to join the Touchpoint Packaging team. In addition to experienced professionals we also welcome young talented people from all related areas and professions. Among the other highlight topics showcased at drupa 2020 are subjects such as functional printing, 3D printing and industrial printing. These areas of application have major potential and therefore provide important new markets. The related technologies are also extremely important for the global packaging market, as they provide intelligent packaging with additional functions, while different printing

technologies allow the use of a wide range of printing substrates. In the segment of industrial printing, the trade fair will focus on major issues such as “artificial intelligence” and “robotics”, new workflows in the production process and the “next generation of industry 4.0” as all of these will have a major impact on the workplace and industry environment. drupa 2020 – no. 1 for printing technologies – will present all technical processing methods for the global printing and media industry as well as for the packaging industry. Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, Chairman and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, is convinced: “With the innovative products presented by our international exhibitors and the extensive supporting programme, drupa 2020 will set new trends. It inspires markets and vertical industries and as such, it provides exceptional networking opportunities, chances and ideas for excellent business deals. drupa focuses on the industry’s innovative force, provides pioneering technologies with a platform for highlight topics and presents an extensive supporting programme – i.e. the “Touchpoints”, the “drupa cube” and the “dip” – that encourages the transfer of knowledge and dialogue. No other event is more relevant for the entire industry. Printing Review | May-June 2017 | 41

At Renderworld 2017, X-Rite Will Showcase How Appearance Technology Helps Keyshot Users Create Physically Accurate Material Representations For

The Highest Quality 3D Visuals And Imagery Appearance Capture (TAC™) ecosystem and the AxF integration with KeyShot at the X-Rite booth.

X-Rite Incorporated, a global leader in color science and technology, and its subsidiary Pantone LLC, announce that Luxion’s KeyShot® software for 3D rendering and animation natively supports the Appearance Exchange Format (AxF™). Developed by X-Rite, AxF is a vendor-neutral format that enables full communication of visual appearance data in a single, editable file to improve the design virtualization process. KeyShot support of AxF allows users to create the highest quality product visuals and imagery using physically accurate digital material data. X-Rite will showcase the AxF integration at Luxion’s international customer conference, KeyShot RenderWorld 2017, May 15th and 16th at the Paséa Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach, California. “A primary differentiator and key feature of KeyShot is the ability to create high-quality visuals using scientifically accurate materials,” says Henrik Wann Jensen, Chief Scientist and Co-founder, Luxion. “Along with the vast material capabilities in KeyShot, support for X-Rite’s AxF files format allows users to accurately and consistently represent the complex material properties of their scanned textures for an endless number of materials, providing even greater realism in communicating their product visuals.” “Traditionally, capture and virtual rendering of complex materials such as special effects paints, meshes and synthetic fabrics are a time-consuming, manual process,” says Dr. Francis Lamy, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, X-Rite and Pantone. “AxF helps address this challenge by providing a common language for communicating material appearance characteristics such as color, texture, gloss, transparency and opacity of physical materials in the virtual world. KeyShot’s integration of AxF enables users to quickly and accurately create amazing visuals for a truly lifelike virtual experience.” KeyShot is a stand-alone real-time rendering application for both Mac 42 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

The TAC ecosystem is comprised of the TAC7 scanner, PANTORA™ Material Hub desktop application, and Virtual Light Booth (VLB). Physical material samples are scanned using the TAC7 scanner, which captures appearance properties digitally to create AxF files that store appearance data. The files are stored, managed, viewed and edited in the PANTORA desktop application. The AxF files can be shared with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and state-of-the art rendering applications, such as KeyShot. Show attendees will have an opportunity to see how AxF files can be used within the KeyShot software and applied to rendering and animation. The recently announced VLB is the industry’s first immersive virtual light booth that allows users to accurately and efficiently visualize and compare 3D digital material renderings side-by-side with physical samples. The VLB combines X-Rite’s SpectraLight QC professional light booth technology with a high-brightness, color-calibrated LCD display, color management technology, and motion tracking sensors. This allows the VLB viewing environment to control all parameters that influence the perception of appearance from illumination to contextual to observational factors. With the VLB, design teams can easily vary these conditions to see changes in material performance. This helps ensure consistency between digital prototypes and final physical products. Designers can make more informed material selections reducing approval cycles and accelerating time to market.

Koenig & Bauer reports on the 1st quarter of 2017

Good start to 2017 with strong new business • • • • • •

21% higher order intake Revenue at the previous year’s level Rise in order backlog to €620m Increase in EBIT from €2.1m to €5m Innovative new products for metal decorating presented Guidance for 2017: revengenue of up to €1.25bn and an EBIT margin of around 6%

Driven by bespoke solutions including the networked printing factory (KBA 4.0), the proportion of service business in group revenue widened to 26% in the first quarter of 2017

The Koenig & Bauer group commenced on a high note in 2017, the year in which it celebrates its 200th anniversary, with a 20.7% increase in order intake to €321.5m. At €259.1m, group revenue remained at the previous year’s level, while order backlog widened by 6.4% to €619.9m. EBIT came to €5m, substantially exceeding the previous year’s figure of €2.1m. The group net profit of €4.7m (2016: €1.6m) is equivalent to earnings per share of €0.30 (2016: €0.11). 44 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

The clear focus on the growth markets of packaging, industrial and digital printing as well as the group-wide service initiative launched at the beginning of 2016 are increasingly paying off. We were able to widen the share of service business in group revenue from 24% in the previous year to 26% in the first quarter of 2017,” explained CFO Dr Mathias Dähn. “We also made good headway

in the packaging markets. Our youngest subsidiary KBA-Iberica Die Cutters, which specialises in flatbed die-cutters, posted growth in order intake, revenue and EBIT,” said CEO Claus Bolza-Schünemann. “At the beginning of May, we presented two product innovations in our packaging printing business with a high-performance printing solution for two-part beverage cans, a market which had previously not

been addressed, and the world’s first digital printing press for migration-free metal decorating.”

Double-digit percentage growth in order intake in all three segments In the Sheetfed segment, more service business and a substantial increase in orders for medium-format presses caused order intake to rise by 12% to €152m. At €150m, revenue fell 3% short of the previous year’s figure of €154.6m. In spite of better margins, EBIT of €4.6m was slightly below the previous year’s figure of €5.7m due to the lower revenue as well as development expenses for new products. The expanding flexo packaging activities have been assigned to the Digital & Web segment since the beginning of the year. The systems for flexible packaging, which is a market of the future, are also web printing presses. With order intake up 18.5% to €57.7m and revenue declining slightly to €30.4m, the order backlog rose from €95.5m to €103.5m. The optimisation of KBA-Flexotecnica (–€1.8m), high R&D expenses and the revenue shortfall left traces on the segment earnings of –€2.3m (2016: –€2.6m). More orders in security printing and glass decorating caused new business in the Special segment to rise by 25.3% to €125.7m. Ahead of the METPACK trade exhibition at the beginning of May, metal decorating orders fell short of the

good previous year as expected. Revenue rose by 2.6% to €87.8m (2016: €85.6m). Segment profit increased to €4.6m, up from €1m in the first quarter of 2016.

Solid balance sheet and financial profile Higher inventories for the planned revenue growth over the next few quarters as well as increased receivables resulting from an accumulation of deliveries shortly before the end of the quarter exerted pressure on the cash flow from operating activities of –€14.9m. The free cash flow of –€44.4m was additionally burdened by the first payment instalment of €21.3m for the external funding of part of the pension provisions. With its funds of €159.5m, securities of €21.5m that can be liquidated at short notice as well as the high cash and guarantee facilities, Koenig & Bauer has a stable funding base. The equity ratio rose slightly relative to

the increased balance sheet total to 31.3% (end of 2016: 31.1%). The group workforce increased by 111 over the previous year to 5,327 employees as of 31 March. In addition to specific recruiting in the expanding service segment and for new applications for the packaging and digital printing markets, 67 employees joined the group with the acquisition of KBA-Iberica Die Cutters.

Guidance for 2017 The management board expects group revenue to grow more dynamically over the further course of the year, leaving a positive effect on earnings. In the absence of any material deterioration in the underlying economic and political conditions impacting international business, group management expects to achieve organic growth to up to €1.25bn in group revenue and an EBIT margin of around 6% in 2017. In keeping with the company motto: “Tradition meets Innovation“, the 1823 founded Vorländer publishing house decided to modernize its printing facility in Dreis-Tiefenbach, Germany with the new newspaper press GEOMAN e:line that has been introduced at drupa 2016. The Vorländer GmbH & Co. KG is a successful, family-owned publishing company with a broad range of media services – from a creative advertisement agency via high-class commercial printing up to online marketing offerings. The decision for the investment in a highly automated GEOMAN e:line is a clear statement for the future of the printed newspaper. GEOMAN e:line: symbiosis of efficiency, quality and productivity The new press series GEOMAN e:line has been developed with a focus on efficiency due to modular automation packages and high quality during the production run. It produces with a speed of 45,000 cyl.r/h and therewith is the optimal solution for the production demands of mediumsized newspaper printers. Another characteristics of the GEOMAN e:line is a moderate investment volume at low life-cycle costs.

Premiere for the GEOMAN e:line The book and offset printing and publishing house Vorländer produces their daily Siegener Zeitung on the worldwide first GEOMAN e:line from manroland web systems

The GEOMAN e:line that has been ordered by Vorländer consists of two four-high towers, a jaw folder PFN-25 and two manroland web systems reel splicers RSN 15. Furthermore, the manroland web systems PECOM-X Inline Control Systems for ink density (IDCμ), color register (IRC), cut-off register (ICC) and inline fan-out guarantee an ideal printing quality and low waste. Integrated gluing heads and a stitcher ensure the high production flexibility of the press. The production process will be monitored and controlled from the PECOM-X Control Center – the most innvovative control desk in the market with intuitive touch screens for operating. Another important aspect for the decision was that the press can be retrofitted at any time with further automation options like e.g. a fully automatic plate change, further folding possibilities for increasing the production flexibility as well as an integration of a digital printing solution for producing hybrid products. These options help to make the investment futureproof – even in case of a changing market environment. Groundbreaking decision For publisher Wolfgang Rothmaler, the decision for a manroland web systems GEOMAN e:line is groundbreaking for the future of his company: „We were convinced by the efficient potential of the innovative GEOMAN e:line and consider a long-term cooperation with the world market leader in web offset printing as the ideal condition for constantly increasing the success of printing our newspaper.“ For Josef Aumiller, Regional Sales Manager at manroland web systems, the investment decision of Vorländer underlines the company’s strategy for newspaper printing: „With the GEOMAN e:line we have optimally completed our product range and we will be able to continue the success story of the e:line family. Of course, we are very proud that Vorländer Verlag is the first reference customer for the GEOMAN e:line.” The press will start its production in spring 2018 at the printing facility in Dreis-Tiefenbach.

J&G Environmental Report Expansion After Launch Of Jag Product Line J&G Environmental’s range of JAG printing products is proving so successful that the company recently expanded their entire operation to keep up with demand. Alongside a new office and significantly larger product warehouse, the print waste management company is now investing in additional staff and more vehicles specifically for the product side of the business.

B

rian Smith came up with the original idea for J&G to diversify into printing consumables and has been at the helm since the launch of the JAG range two years ago. He attributes its rapid growth, both in terms of the number of products and rising sales figures, to a number of key factors. “J&G is a trusted name that promotes confidence within the printing industry and that ensured the perfect foundation for JAG from the outset,” he explained. “To honour that trust and build on it in a completely new area however we also needed to provide great quality products, fantastic levels of service and excellent technical after sales support. The fact we have come so far in such a relatively short space of time is down to the fact we have ensured that is the case, in addition to the dedication and hard work of our sales team.” Brian’s original concept of providing a complete ‘circular’ service by delivering the products needed and then collecting the waste they create has been

48 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

embraced by both existing and new clients. The company has many waste disposal customers now ordering JAG products but J&G has also seen the benefit work in reverse, with new customers starting to use their waste disposal service after purchasing the printing consumables. They have plenty to purchase too - from just six core products the JAG range has now grown to more than 200 since its launch in January 2015. “We started being asked, could we provide this or could we sell that and thought, well, why can’t we?” adds Brian. “I felt confident busy printing firms would see the concept of dealing with just one company for both consumables and waste disposal as providing advantages but never expected it to take off to this extent quite so quickly – we outgrew the warehouse we had expected to be suitable for the first few years, within a matter of months as a direct result.” Brian also acknowledges that the J&G name combined with his contacts and knowledge of the

printing industry, has helped secure business from top manufacturers, including Huber, whilst also ensuring every effort is taken so that the JAG range reflects the strong environment ethos J&G are built on. One of many happy new customers is Bedfordshire-based printing firm Newnorth, their Operations Manager Zak Kightley confirms. “We had no issue with our previous suppliers in terms of either products or service; in fact, we thought they’d be a hard act to follow. However, we are more than happy with our move to JAG last year, a decision we reached for two reasons. One was price. Although not the cheapest option, the products are certainly competitively priced. The second was that the JAG team were the only supplier to ask our expectations from an ink and then come with a solution to an issue we’d been experiencing for a couple of years previously; one that has saved us time and money. “Having met our expectations with the products, any initial concerns

about service levels have proven to be unfounded – everyone at JAG is awesome. Brian and his team have held our hands through any teething problems and also dug us out of the occasional hole!” Blandford-based J&G Environmental are accredited specialists in waste control to the printing industry with a 25-year track record of professionalism and reliability. The company currently manages the waste collection and disposal needs of more than 2000 UK print houses and newspaper groups and is increasingly diversifying to provide recycling and waste management options across a range of other areas. The company launched JAG products, a range of printing consumables in January 2015 with the aim of providing a complete supply and waste disposal service for customers. The company forms part of Cleansing Service Group Limited, one of the UK’s largest privatelyowned waste management groups. J&G Environmental are exhibiting at IPEX 2017. Visit them on stand E400A.

Changing Landscape Forecast For €159.2 Billion European Print Market In New Smithers Pira Report

In 2016 the printing market across Europe is valued at €159.2 billion, producing the equivalent of some 13.2 trillion A4 prints and consuming just over 68 million tonnes of printing substrates. Packaging represented 44.7% of the market by value in 2011; this rises to 56.6% by 2021. The European print market is driven from the end-user communication preferences of individuals, who have greater choice in communication with new channels including social media replacing print products. This is severe in newspaper, magazine, book, catalogue and graphic products, less so in packaging where the physical properties of the pack are key. “Much print promotes goods and services where it is in competition with other media, with new channels grabbing share of the expenditure, at the expense of print in many cases. Internet and social media, the digital channels including mobile, have grown strongly as brands and retailers develop their communications with customers and new retail channels come to the fore,” says Sean Smyth, author of the report. “There is evidence that print remains an important part of the mix, but

it has to be effective and cost-competitive to be used. The media landscape is continuing to develop with influential figures in advertising starting to question the effectiveness of some digital growth, increasingly asking for better metrics on the effectiveness of digital.” Print demand is driven by many factors, but the economic environment and advertising expenditure are important. Across Europe there is a great deal of economic uncertainty within the macro-economic landscape and it determines much of the confidence in government, business and individuals, and their ability or wish to spend money on print. Economic uncertainty has plagued Europe since the financial crash and successive Eurozone crises. Governments have tried many strategies from austerity to high spending programmes but uncertainty remains, depressing print expenditure. Despite the uncertainty, print remains an important communication channel that is competing for the attention of millions of European consumers. The methods of production are developing with new technologies being introduced that change the costs of print production at high quality. Printing remains a large business, with real growth in printed packaging as publication and graphics print declines across Europe. Printing Review | May-June 2017 | 49

Always stay nice and clean

Dirt in the cooling system causes consequential damage – The LIQUI MOLY radiator cleaner resolves problems at their root Nowadays radiators are highly cultivated systems that react exceptionally sensitively to impurities. Often it is the water pump that then gives up the ghost. Yet this is easy to avoid: with the LIQUI MOLY radiator cleaner, which reliably removes deposits and dirt from the cooling circuit. The work that radiators have to do nowadays is constantly growing. Downsizing and weight reduction mean that ever smaller and lighter coolant pumps have to discharge large quantities of heat, occurring in the full-load operation of the small motors. “Plus, significantly higher revs are being driven at the coolant pump than is the case in proven systems,” explains David Kaiser, head of Research and Development at LIQUI MOLY. Active thermal management of the motors also leads to the pumps sometimes being switched off during vehicle use, which fosters the formation of slime and deposits in the cooling system. Impurities, wear and dirt in the cooling water circuit drive up the wear of the water pump. Also, the particles attack the shaft seal. But the cause of the problem is not resolved by replacing the water pump. It is only a matter of time before the dirt in the cooling water causes problems for the new pump, too. “This is as if you were to change for dinner, but not wash your hands.

50 | May-June 2017 | Printing Review

That’s why it is so important to clean the cooling system every time the radiator is worked on,” recommends David Kaiser. This is easy and affordable with the LIQUI MOLY radiator cleaner. It is simply added to the cooling water, the radiator is switched on and the motor left to run. The active ingredients then dissolve deposits, slime and dirt. After 10 to 30 minutes these are drained together with the old cooling water and the system is rinsed with water. Now it is clean and can once again deploy its full output. Also, the service life of the water pump is increased and problems with the cooling system are prevented. “For the same reason, the cooling system should also be cleaned when the radiator is replaced,” says David Kaiser. It is generally older vehicles in which the radiator is so heavily corroded that it has to be replaced. The damage is made worse by car owners that do not fill it with distilled water, but instead use tap water, and do not even use antifreeze. The consequence: Even more corrosion, even more impurities in the cooling water. “If only the radiator is replaced, then deposits and slime remain in the system and will continue to cause problems in the future,” says David Kaiser. Here, too, the entire system should be freed from dirt with the radiator clea
