Tips for fast weight loss

F

ast weight loss is the ultimate dream. Everybody wishes to wake up to a slimmer self without much effort. It's one wish that remains in our minds all the time.

weight against your height by using reliable methods like the BMI, and set a healthy weight loss target. This is often half the battle won. Reduce the calories

But if you have tried and failed at fast weight loss, then now is a good time to give it a try again. In order to lose weight quickly, most folks try crash diets or extensive workouts. But for some surprisingly odd reason, your fast weight loss planning did not work out for you. So we give you 20 tips for fast weight loss that'll clear the air for you, while helping you decide what your personal weight loss journey should be about. For starters, it should be about getting fitter, and not 'slimmer'. Weight loss wish Decide how much weight you need to lose - Most people start their weight loss journey by claiming to be xyz kilos overweight. This isn't a healthy way to project or aim for weight loss. Calculate your desired

One gram of fat contains twice the calories of a gram of protein or carbohydrate. Avoid fatty foods, subtract the fats from your meat too. Include a lot of vegetables (full of fiber) and fruits in your diet. For fast weight loss, replace the oily paratha breakfast with a bowl of whole grain cereal or some lean protein and vegetables. Drink more water Doctors recommend that one must drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water in a day. Drinking more water helps the stomach feel fuller and reduces cravings considerably. Take one glass of water before every meal, it is a good way to keep you from overeating.Substitute all your sodas, fruit juice, teas, coffee, and

beer for a glass of water and you could lose weight fast. Time management This is quite often overlooked in weight loss programs. Decide which part of your day will be dedicated to exercise, when in the week you will stock up on groceries, and when you will do the cooking - all within your current work and home life routine. If you don't do this now, your days will be rushed and unplanned, and you won't be able to sustain your weight loss efforts. Arnav Sarkar, our fitness coach unveils the biggest mistake we make to achieve fast weight loss: We believe spending hours in the gym will aid in fast weight loss, but the truth is, quality matters over time. Arnav says, "When it comes to training, you don't need to do 20 exercises in each workout, and neither do you need to spend 45 minutes on the treadmill." This sounds similar to what you want to believe.

Stock your kitchen Keep your house well-stocked with fruits, vegetables, healthy meats, grains, cereals, spices, and flavourers. Follow our tricks to healthy cooking, cooking vegetables for the week, and low-fat cooking posts to understand how best you can stock your kitchen with healthy and delicious ingredients. These will help you avoid binging and aid in fast weight loss. People whose diets are dominant in fruits & veggies tend to lose weight faster and maintain their weights much longer. Watch portions Instead of binging on the biggest piece of cake, choose the smallest slice or simply share it with someone. After all being guilt-free is half the weight loss battle won. Chew everything you eat at least 812 times. Eat slowly. Your body doesn't realize that you've had

enough to eat until several minutes after you've had it. Stick to home-cooked meals Whether it's you who's cooking, a family member, or house help, ensure that every one practises healthy cooking methods, and ingredients. Ask any person who's lost weight the healthy way, and you will always hear about how healthy homecooked meals were a big reason behind it. Use less oil, low salt, fresh produce, and you'll start seeing results in no time. This habit not only helps in fast weight loss but it makes you healthy and fit from within. Break the fast After sleeping for 6 to 8 hours at night, your glucose level or blood sugar level is low. After you miss

your breakfast, you let the body go into a hibernation-like state, which leads to no or minimum calorie burn. Advice backed by scientific evidence: Through several studies it is suggested that more than 95% of overweight individuals, tend to skip breakfast - making it a common habit amongst those who are unable to manage their weight well. Breakfast and weight loss: Each morning, your body needs to rev up its metabolic rate and breakfast does exactly that. It keeps your hormone levels stable and helps regulate your blood sugar level, burning more calories. Stop unhealthy cravings: Are you a big snacker? Eating breakfast will help you curb your snack attacks a lot better. One of the biggest advantages of eating breakfast is that

it helps stabilise your hormones and keeps potential overeating and bingeing at bay.

customers get thirsty they will order drinks to quench their thirst. So watch out for salty snacks!!

Cut the salt

Start a cardio + weights workout

Eating more than the recommended 2500mg (1 tablespoon) of sodium each day will cause you to retain water and weight gain. Sodium holds up to 50 times its weight in water. When you limit the amount of sodium you eat your body will begin to expel some that unwanted water weight.

A healthy weight loss programme is incomplete without a good exercise routine, and weight training mixed with cardio is the best way to lose weight. Of course, variations and forms exist, but any workout that stresses on muscle tone and increased heart rate will always help you lose weight and keep it off. You can either start a home workout today, or rely on gyms for fitness training. You'll get a much greater after burn effect from lifting heavier weights because of the high intensity and your body's metabolism will burn more fat to help your body recover from your heavy weight training workout.

The urge to drink water is a good indicator that your sodium intake is too high. As your sodium levels get high your body ask for more water to dilute the sodium by making you thirsty. A lot of bars offer salty snacks such as peanuts and chips for free, after

herbal ways to cosmetics

L

ip gloss, body lotion, shampoo… the list goes on! Most women use various cosmetic products every day to prep their skin. But are these chemical laden tubes good for our skin and hair in the long run? Nature has provided several products that have the ability to improve the condition of our skin and hair in a totally safe manner, free of chemicals. Here are a few natural alternatives to everyday cosmetics which will help you make the switch. Coconut oil – Body lotion and anti-dandruff agent With its composition of medium chain fatty acids, coconut oil is extremely effective at keeping skin healthy and free from dryness and wrinkles. Use it alone or in combination with some other oil or herb, for your skin or also hair – coconut oil works equally well. Because of its ability to penetrate deep into the hair shaft and also the skin, this oil acts from deep within to ensure conditioning and moisturising effects that last for long. Coconut oil is also a source of antioxidants such as vitamin E and so, using it regularly can also help prevent those wrinkles that appear on the skin with ageing. Henna – Hair dye Hair dyes work their magic instantly and this is what makes it tempting to reach out for one when you need to hide your greys and look your best. But most synthetic hair dye products contain chemicals called secondary amines or tar derivatives that have been linked to cancer. Switch over to a natural hair dye used since times immemorial – henna. Combine with sesame oil and curry leaves, or mix with beetroot juice, or add into a mix of curd, lemon juice and tea – whatever the shade you desire, henna can help you get it and in the process, also keep your body cool. Tur meric (haldi) and fr uits – RRejuvenating ejuvenating face pack If you don’t have the time or motivation to head to a beauty parlour, the easiest way to get glowing skin on-the-go is to use a face pack. However, a commercial face pack is quite likely to contain chemicals – preservatives at the very least – that may not be good for you in the long run. Instead, make use of simple ingredients in your kitchen to rejuvenate your skin and give it a soft glow. Mix in some turmeric powder with a little curd and apply on your face. Or, mash ripe papaya fruit into a rough pulp and apply – this will also help reduce the appearance of black spots on the skin. 18 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

Looking for the Beauty Within

I

ndustry wide, a new paradigm has been created wherein primary packaging has assumed a more important role. Robin Coe-Hutshing, founder/ creative director, Gold Grenade Niche beauty brands, are having resurgence, with few options for launching, since brick and mortar indies like Fred Segal Santa Monica have shuttered, and Bendel’s has changed their business model. Packaging is more significant than ever as camera-ready brands expand their visual playing fields to Twitter, Instagram, You Tube and Facebook. With a host of media opportunities, the most photogenic product frequently seems to win the beauty race. HSN, QVC and e-commerce figure prominently into strategies for emerging brands, and it is interesting

to see how the perceived value of packaging changes with it. Historically, secondary packaging has been a major selling tool for beauty brands. Luxurious boxes, custom papers, hot stamping and foil embossing provided branding and shelf presence. The new question is: Are you operating on outmoded parameters? Are your packaging dollars being spent wisely? Is your primary packaging ready for its close-up? Will your secondary packaging be shown on air or online? Customers appreciate beautiful packaging, but do they vote with their wallet for value? Consumer blogs garner a cross section of opinion: First “Presentation is very important. On the products I use, I appreciate the attractive cosmetic packaging.” And conversely, “I don't care whether it looks attractive or not. I only care

about the ingredients.” Different gradations of these sentiments come into play. “I like attractive packaging as it is part of the experience of using the product. But, if a plainer and less expensive packaging could be used and not compromise the integrity of the product and bring the price down, my wallet is all for it!” “First of all, it has to catch your eye for some reason. And it's great if it looks nice, but I can't buy something solely for that reason.” From a consumer standpoint, attractive packaging is definitely an initial draw, but there is a conscious hesitation about overpaying for over-packaging that has no intrinsic value after purchase. It is a double-edged sword we face as packaging designers, because customers admit to being simultaneously drawn to and sensitive to the disposable nature of outer packaging and costs attributed to it. As designers we can help consumers seeking to retain value by making less disparity between the primary package

design and the secondary. Paperboard packaging, keepsake boxes, minimalist packaging, and tin packaging are just a few solutions that more closely unite the inside and outside packaging concepts. Industry wide, a new paradigm has been created wherein primary packaging has assumed a more important role therefore it is essential to step up our design game so products make a better showing alone-online, on television, on blog postings, etc. These products, not their packages are the stars. With the focus on product itself, emphasis should be placed upon beautifully designed components that enhance the intrinsic value of that product. Speak to your audience about your brand from the outside but remember, the consumer is looking at the product within!

Foods for Healthy Skin: You Are What You Eat

fabulous skin W

ant truly fabulous skin -glowing, vibrant, and, yes, younger-looking skin? Make sure you're putting foods for healthy skin on your plate. "Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being, but the outer fabric of your body as well. The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look," says Samantha Heller, MS, RD, a clinical nutritionist at NYU Medical Center in New York City. The reverse is true as well, Heller tells WebMD. The less attention we pay to what goes in our mouth, the more problems we may see cropping up with our skin. "You could have sallow skin, dry skin, older-looking skin. It's not

going to happen overnight, but starve your skin long enough, and it's going to show," she says. What's more, some health experts believe that when your diet is missing certain foods for healthy skin, other, even more serious skin problems can result. Elaine Linker, PhD, biochemist and co-founder of DDF Skin Care, says a number of conditions, such as acne, can cause you to suddenly break out. And some chronic skin conditions, such as eczema, may be linked to diet. What Are Foods for Healthy Skin? Most experts say eating a balanced diet is the best way to get your share of good food for healthy skin.

Still, a number of specific skin treats are more likely than others to give a boost of glowing good health to your complexion. Here's what experts told WebMD are the most important: Low-Fat Dairy Products. One the most important components of skin health is vitamin A. One of the best places to get it is low-fat dairy products. In fact, experts say that the health of our skin cells is dependent on dietary vitamin A. Nutrition expert Liz Lipski, PhD, CCN, says it's doubly important to eat Arich dairy foods if you have either diabetes or a thyroid condition. "Many people who have these problems can't convert the beta

carotene to vitamin A, which is the form found in many foods that we normally associate with this vitamin, such as carrots," says Lipski, the founder and Director of InnovativeHealing.com and the author of Digestive Wellness. The A in dairy products, she says is "true A," so everyone's skin can use it. Lipski says low-fat yogurt is not only high in vitamin A, but also acidophilus, the "live" bacteria that is good for intestinal health. Turns out, it may also have an impact on the skin. "Anything that helps keep digestion normal, any live bacteria or enzymes, is also going to be reflected in healthy-looking skin," says Lipski.

Best Pieces of Beauty Advice

1. What's the best beauty treatment you've ever had?

"Every two weeks. My hair is totally white, and I'm five feet tall, so most people have a great view of my roots. When will I stop? Sixty is right around the corner, so...I'll revisit this when I'm 70."

"Laser hair removal. It's amazing. I had it done on my upper lip and chin a couple of years ago. Forget waxing and plucking. And don't wait too long—once the hairs turn white, the laser can't zap them anymore."

5. Of all the products you make, which is the one you couldn't live without?

2. What shade of eyeliner is most universally flattering?

6. How do you feel about Botox?

"Espresso. Not a wimpy brown, but not as harsh as black. It makes both brown and bluegreen eyes look more vibrant. Mascara, though, should always be black. Even on a makeup virgin, one coat looks really natural. I discontinued my brown mascara."

"My Extra Repair Moisturizing Balm is the one thing I can put on my face—without a stitch of makeup—and look ten years younger. I have superdry skin, and this cream immediately plumps it up and makes me look refreshed."

"I've done it. I'll never do it again. It didn't look natural to me. If you take away the lines in my forehead, it doesn't match the rest of my face." 7. What advice do you wish your mother had given you about looking good? "That how I feel about myself is more important than how I look. Feeling confident, being comfortable in your skin—that's what really makes you beautiful."

3. What is the most important trick you have for applying concealer? "When you're hiding dark under-eye circles, use a brush to get right up to the lashline and into the inner corners of the eyes. And wherever you're applying concealer, always tap or press—never rub or wipe. Under-eye concealer is the one makeup thing I do every day. If I get around to blush or eyeliner, that's awesome—but concealer is a must." 4. Do you dye your hair? 28 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

What You Need To Know About Moisturizing Your Face 30 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

S

kincare can be one of the most confusing things in life. While a Google search may tell you it's OK to embrace essential oils, your friends could simultaneously warn you that you're doing it all wrong, and then you go down this skin disaster spiral. Alright, so it's probably not that serious, but finding the right way to moisturize your face can be a battle. While we're sitting here in the cold depths of the polar vortex, we've been thinking hard about the best way to protect our precious faces in the event of harsh winds. So we asked two dermatologists to weigh in on the proper ways to hydrate our skin. From knowing your skin type to reading between the ingredient lines, here's what you need to know about moisturizing your face. You should be using a moisturizer based on your skin type. One of the first mistakes people make when using products on their skin is using a product that doesn't necessarily fit their skin type. “Most patients will say they have sensitive skin,” says Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, a New York City-based cosmetic dermatologist. But, if you are unsure, determining your type is easy. Dr. Frank suggests examining how your skin feels at the end of the day. Look to see if your T-zone is dry, oily or somewhat normal. “Those suffering from dry skin problems are prone to having slightly allergic skin, and such people shouldn’t use conventional moisturizers because of the harm chemicals can have on the fragile surface. While using an oil-based moisturizing cream is terrible for acne-prone skin,” says boardcertified dermatologist Dr. Ted Lain. So to avoid a skincare blunder, follow these guidelines: Oily: “Look for lotions instead of creams,” advises Dr. Lain. Find formulas that have exfoliating

ingredients, such as lactic glycolic and salicylic acids. Dry: Definitely find a cream, especially in the winter weather. “There is more oil in a cream, therefore it is a thicker substance and more moisturizing. The greater the oil content, the better absorption through the skin barriers to hydrate the tissue,” says Dr. Frank. Combination: While Dr. Lain believes this is the hardest skin type to find products for, he recommends “lotions with no acids, something bland such as Cetaphil, Cerave, Aveeno, Neutrogena, or Lubriderm.” Normal: “I always tell people with normal skin to put a very thin layer of ointment on at night, such as Aquaphor,” says Dr. Frank, adding that this will help protect you against the forces of nature. But don't forget, your surrounding climate impacts your skin, too. Whether it’s hot, dry or windy, you should take the climate into account the next time you pick up some moisturizer. For those of you in the chilly, polar vortex parts of the country (who are not acne prone!), try an ointment. “A moisturizer gets readily absorbed, but an ointment leaves an extra layer of protection,” explains Dr. Frank. He also suggests not exfoliating. If it's humid, Dr. Lain recommends "swapping your lightweight moisturizer for a gel, which is more hydrating,” because “a gel formulation won't make you look too oily if you start to break a sweat.” And finally, for those super dry places, Dr. Lain suggests a cream, but also adds that “using gentle soaps in the shower without exfoliants are helpful,” while “a cold humidifier in your bedroom at night can help your skin retain the moisture.” And what about SPF? Dr. Frank gives us the goods on what those SPF numbers really mean. “There are two types of damaging sun rays: UVA, which are responsible for aging the skin; and UVB,

31 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

which are responsible for burning it -- the SPF number on a bottle of sunscreen only gives a guide for how much UVB protection the product offers.” The only way you'll really know if your sunscreen combats UVA rays is if it states so on the bottle. Another myth, Dr. Frank explains, is that you don't have to use a different moisturizer from your sunscreen. ”Sunscreens already add moisture to your skin because of their ingredients and if you have oily skin, you may want to skip the separate moisturizer.” If you have to put both on, apply SPF first and let it settle before you put on your lotion or cream. When testing a new moisturizer,, be cautious. izer We all have those moments when we buy some new skincare product and want to rub it all over our bodies. However, that could lead to unwanted breakouts and some horror-inducing rashes. “If you're trying out a new moisturizer, test it on your forearm first,” says Dr. Frank. And with that, Dr. Lain recommends that you “give it two weeks before you decide.” One more important thing to consider is how the moisturizers are marketed. “Even if a product's label says that it is hypoallergenic, it still might contain something to which you're allergic,” says Dr. Frank. Make sure to read the ingredients before you buy, to avoid waste and misuse. Finally, is it really better to moisturize while your face is still wet? While Dr. Lain says it doesn't matter, Dr. Frank says the best time to really apply is after toning, “as your skin is primed to receive the maximum benefits.” So there you have it, the basics of moisturizing your skin. If you ever find that your face is more irritated than usual, you should consult a doctor.

Tricks to hide your double chin Many often neglect what really holds a beautiful face—the neck! We talk to experts on how to get rid of that double chin. Since the apple knocked open Newton's head to understand gravity, we've come to appreciate it for a lot of things—it allows us to walk, drive, write... But could you think it may not be the best thing to happen to your neck? Well, scientific studies have established that our neck bears the heaviest force of gravity compared to other body parts. So if you are getting a double chin, probably it's gravity to blame. But there are other factors of course. Read on to know what the experts suggest you could get rid of it. Let's understand first the three reasons that could be causing that double chin—body fat, anatomy and time. However, experts say the major cause for this problem is simple fat deposition —the tissue under the chin that collects the fat. Cosmetic surgeon Dr Mohan Thomas spells the reasons in medical terms, "A double chin can be due to being overweight, having a weak chin or retrognathia, a condition in which either both or both jaws recede with respect to the frontal plane of the forehead. In the second and third case one usually has to go in for a surgery."

neck lift takes a couple of hours. These procedures cost anywhere between Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000, and a lot of women are already going for them." Dr Pai, however, prefers meso-therapy, "It rejuvenates the skin and face muscles by forming collagen and new cells, which stretches the skin and smoothens superficial wrinkles." This is a painless option and requires six sittings. "Another option is the lipoysis treatment (fat dissolving agents), given in deeper areas in the chin which dissolve the fat completely," she adds. While Dr Rustam Ginwalla, a cosmetic surgeon, stresses that cosmetic surgery is not the only option, but in case plain exercising may not bear result, he prefers a procedure called Vaser, "It's an ultra sound technology and requires a 2 mm incision just under the chin which fades away with time," he says. Dope on double chin Double chins depend on the angle between the jaw line and throat. The lesser the angle between the two, the greater is the risk. However double chin is not a dangerous health sign, but just an indicator of your weight gain. It's also an inevitable part from the ageing process, as women begin to lose elasticity of their skin around 40. To reclaim your chain, go for regular aerobic exercises and avoid crash diets, which usually do more harm than good. Cheat tricks Get a bob cut: It takes the attention away from your neckline, precisely what you'd want. And do not go in for a one with curls ending under your chin.

But then again, while more women seem to suffer from this problem than men, it is not only the fat women who are in danger of getting one. Thin people too have double chins, which might surprise a lot of us.

Make-up for the difference: Try highlighting some other feature on your face, like the eyes. And you can use a darker shade of foundation under your chin and blend it carefully with your face.

Cosmetic Physician Dr Jamuna Pai says, "Fat starts accumulating at a place where there is no physical activity. Doing exercises like Yoga and stretching your neck muscles will help." Agrees Dr Thomas, "I always tell my patients to exercise. Going under the knife should be the last option."

Drooping necklines: Too scared to do that? Well, try wearing deeper or broad-necked tops so that more area of your neck is flattered to take away those eyes from your double chin.

For those with money, cosmetologist Dr Anshuman Manaswi says, "Liposuction takes about one hour while a procedure like a chin or a 33 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

What Is The Best Non-Prescription Eyelash Enhancer?

E

yelash enhancers are the latest beauty trend these days, and cosmetic companies everywhere are launching products that promise to give women longer, fuller, and darker lashes without the fuss of mascara or false lashes. But, with all these options, it’s hard to know what really works and what doesn’t.

What Is Eyelash Enhancement?

Luckily, there are reputable beauty sites out there that have put many of these eyelash enhancers to the test. The results for this year’s topperforming eyelash enhancers are in … with SmartLash coming in with a solid 5-star rating on destination for skin care and beauty.

While prescription eyelash enhancers are often formulated with prostaglandin, a hormone that can cause side effects such as darkened irises (potentially irreversible) and blurred vision, more and more companies are developing safer, non-prescription alternatives that deliver impressive results.

If you aren’t yet aware of this increasingly popular method of achieving longer lashes, eyelash enhancers are formulas that are topically applied to the base of your lower and upper lashes. They can even be used on sparse, thin eyebrows. Is It Safe?

Most non-prescription formulas are hormone and paraben-free. Instead, they’re formulated with polypeptides, amino acids, and conditioning ingredients to help rejuvenate lashes and strengthen them against breakage. So, you still get longer, fuller, darker-looking lashes and shapelier brows, without the negative side effects. How Soon Can You See Results? In some cases, users have reported seeing results in as little as seven days, while others may see results in four weeks. SmartLash, for instance, has published its clinical results, which show that 46 percent of participants saw a difference in their eyelashes and/or brows in just

seven days, while 100 percent saw a difference in 14 days. They also experienced up to a 68 percent increase in the appearance of lash length.

You shouldn't have to apply your lipstick over and over again throughout the day. By selecting the right formula and following these simple application tips, you can get beautiful lip color that lasts.

LONGLASTING LIP COLOR YOU'LL LOVE Preparing your lips The key to great looking lipstick that lasts is preparation. For perfect application, you lips need to be soft and smooth. Drink plenty of water and keep your lips hydrated with lip balm, particularly if you live in a dry or windy climate. Exfoliate flaky lips with a gentle washcloth every day in the shower to remove dead skin cells and help create a silky surface. If your lipstick fades easily, add a thin coat of lip primer to your lips before applying your lip color. Let the primer dry for a few seconds before applying your lip color — you don't want to apply lipstick to a wet surface or it may bleed. Try Urban Decay Lip Primer Potion (Sephora, $20). It stops bleeding, fading and feathering but also has an easy-glide formula and smooth finish, so even your matte formula lipstick won't look dry or cakey. Choose the right formula Lipstick is typically categorized as matte, creme or frost (shimmer). Matte lipstick offers true color but

not much shine. It typically contains less moisture than other formulas and can leave your lips dry. If you like the look of matte lipstick, try to find one that is labeled as moisturizing (or semi-matte). Creme formula lipstick features dewy shades that will stay in place better if you apply powder or primer to you lips before adding lipstick. This formula is perfect for the more mature woman, or those who tend to get dry lips. Frost or shimmers contain flecks of color that reflect light. These lipsticks are great for evening because they add a little glitz. Also consider lip stains or look for lipsticks that are labeled "highly pigmented" for more staying power.

natural lip color. Avoid lip liners that are too dark. Take your time when applying lip liner and stick close to your natural lip line. To help your color last longer, fill in your entire lips with the lip liner to create a strong foundation, and then add lipstick on top. Use a lip brush Though it will definitely take longer, it's best to apply lipstick with a lip brush for more precision. Take your time and be sure to take the color all the way to the corner of your lips. Get glossy Add a dab of gloss on top of your lipstick for some extra shine. Apply it to just the center of your bottom lip.

For those with dry lips, be wary of lipsticks that boast "all day" formulas. These tend to become very waxy and drying. Line your lips After prepping your lips with powder, primer or even a coat of foundation, line them with a neutral lip pencil in a shade close to your 36 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

Smack your lips together to spread the gloss. If you aren't a fan of lipstick, you can forego the lipstick altogether and just use gloss. Lip gloss comes in many forms, the most popular being wands, tubes and pots. Gloss provides shine along with a bit of color. Avoid using too much gloss because it tends to get sticky and messy. Hot lip colors this season When choosing lip color this season, shades of fuchsia, plum and berry are hot choices. True reds, bluish reds and cherry reds are also very popular. Avoid brick reds, corals and oranges, which tend to make teeth look yellow.

he skin around the eyes is very delicate and thinner than most other areas of the face. It has no oil glands and has a fine texture. This area requires special care and reflects neglect, abuse, aging, stress, internal health and lifestyle very easily. In fact, dark circles around the eyes can also develop due to hereditary factors, lack of sleep, illness, stress and nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, along with external treatment, it is advisable to take these aspects into consideration in order to establish the cause and bring about the necessary changes. Dark circles can develop at an early age, like adolescence and early 20s, although it is more common in older people. This is due to the causes discussed above. The way to prevent dark circles is to have a nutritious and balanced diet, including fresh fruits, salads, yogurt and sprouts in your daily diet, along with unprocessed cereals, skimmed

milk, cottage cheese (paneer), lentils and beans. Daily exercise, along with deep breathing, helps blood circulation, oxygenation and control of stress. Adequate sleep and relaxation are very important. Gentle movements and a light touch are essential while handling the area, to remove make up or apply creams. It is better not to massage the area, so that the skin does not get pulled or stretched in any way. Any massage of the area should be done during a professional facial, so that correct techniques are employed. A cleansing gel or cream should be used to remove make-up, using moist cotton wool. Gels and creams help to dissolve make up and grime and thus facilitate their removal. A cream which has been specially formulated for the area around the eyes should be applied. Heavy creams are not suitable. It should be a cream with a light texture and consistency. The cream should be removed with a moist cotton wool

after 10 minutes. Cream should never be left on the area around the eyes during the night. Normal facial masks should not be applied around the eyes. An under-eye cream, containing almond, is good, as it not only nourishes the skin, but has a lightening effect on the colour tone, if used over a period of time. Facial masks are usually not applied around the eyes. Eye fatigue can also be relived with washing. Wash your eyes with warm water and follow this with cold water. This improves blood circulation to the eyes and soothes them. It also cleanses the eyes and relieves congestion. Some home remedies can be used to minimise dark circles, brighten the eyes and reduce fatigue: - Cucumber juice is a common remedy. It should be applied daily around eyes and washed off with plain water after 15 minutes. - Mixing potato juice with cucumber juice in equal quantities helps if there

is puffiness along with dark circles. Follow the same procedure. - Dark circles can also be treated by mixing cucumber juice with lemon juice in equal quantities. Apply daily and wash off with water after 15 minutes. - Tomato juice is also said to lighten skin colour. - Consult your doctor about daily exercises. Include deep breathing exercises in your exercise schedule. This helps to deal with stress and also oxygenates the body. - Along with external care and a healthy lifestyle, take time off for relaxation, using eye pads. Take cotton wool and make two thick square pads. They can be soaked in cucumber juice or rose water. Lie down, close your eyes and put the soaked pads on them. Keep them on for about 15 minutes. Used tea bags can also be used as eye pads.

How to apply lipstick like a pro 6 Tips For Perfect Lips –

I

f you feel you just can’t face the world without your lippy, then here’s all the info you need to know how to apply the perfect lip liner and lipstick. Make sure your lips are soft and smooth. You don’t want rough skin detracting from your carefully applied lipstick. If necessary take an old soft toothbrush and rub it gently over your lips to remove any dry flakes of skin. Apply a lip cream to soften and protect. Add a thin layer of foundation over the whole lip area. This not only evens out skin colour but also acts as a primer for the lipstick. Use a lip liner to define the edges of your lips and stop your lipstick from ‘bleeding’. Use either a totally neutral colour or one that matches your lipstick. Start from the centre of your top lip to one corner. Repeat on the other side of your top lip and then outline the bottom. It is possible to slightly enlarge the size of your lips by outlining outside of your natural lip line, but keep this as close as possible to keep it natural looking. To apply the lipstick itself, the best method is to use a specially designed lipbrush and load with colour from your lipstick. This gives you a more precise method of application. Relax your mouth and fill in your lips being careful not to go outside the liner. If you’d like a slightly deeper colour, then blot the lips with a tissue being careful not to smudge the lipstick and then apply a second coat of lipstick. Finally check you haven’t left any lipstick on your teeth. You can prevent this happening by inserting a finger into your mouth, pursing your lips around your finger and then slowly removing it. Now that you know how to apply lipstick perfectly, read our post about how to choose the perfect lip color based on your skin tone.

'Will counter misleading cosmetic surgery ads'

P

lastic surgeons expressed concern about misleading and unscientific advertisements regarding cosmetic surgery in the first ever three-day national conference on plastic surgery conducted by the Indian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons in the city. Non-surgical methods of cosmetology as well as surgical methods like liposuction, body contouring and nose surgery were discussed by experts during the conference. Five foreign faculties were also part of the conference that was attended by 150 cosmetic surgeons. "This is an annual conference of the association and was organized in Nashik for the first time. Different symposiums were arranged and discussions on how to improve surgical techniques, video demonstrations of some surgical tech-

niques and how to improve results of such surgeries were the focus of the conference," said local organizing secretary Rajendra Nehete. Vice-president of the association Manoj Khanna, who practices in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, said there has been a boom in cosmetic surgery all over the world. There has been an upswing in plastic surgery customers in India by five times in the last 10-15 years.

misleading advertisements for cosmetic surgery. Numerous business houses spend crores of rupees every year to lure people with ads that are misleading, unscientific, unethical, illogical and gives unrealistic results. Our association plans to counter this at the national level with the help of the Union ministry of health. We will soon approach the government," he said.

"I have been practising since 1995 and the demand is five times today since 2000. It is a myth that only rich people opt for cosmetic surgery. Today, 70% of the population getting such surgeries done comes from the middle class. The maximum demand is for hair transplantation and liposuction," added Khanna.

Ramon Llull from Spain pointed out that patients' health needs to be kept in mind while giving them a youthful look. "Plastic surgeons have often resorted to external materials like silicon, biopolymer etc. but the current trend is using the patient's own tissues. This has minimum complications and is a permanent solution," Llull added.

"However, a big concern for us is

He cautioned that cosmetic surgery

should be done from trained surgeons and those associated with some organization as they would be updated with the latest techniques. In the filed of nose surgery, K S Bhangoo from USA spoke about the advantages of the new technique of open rhinoplasty (nose surgery) as against the traditional closed method. Sanjay Parashar from Dubai spoke about abdominoplasty and minimal incision technique, which reduces scars in such a surgery. "There are misunderstandings about liposuction. It is not for weight reduction but body contouring. Proper diet and exercise is essential after cosmetic surgery. People get carried away by film stars' bodies but they don't know the hard work that goes into it," said Nehete.

PACKAGING MATTERS By: Steve Kazanjian As beauty care packaging continues to evolve, brand owners need new and innovative ways to differentiate from competitors. What’s the best way to stand out? Develop an emotional connection with your end user. The emotional connection between consumer and brand plays a more important role in beauty packaging than any other category— these are the products that help consumers look and feel their best. And one of the most important tools brand owners have at their disposal for creating this emotional connection is packaging. At MWV, we study packaging satisfaction to help brands deliver on their promises. Our inaugural Packaging Matters research revealed significant gaps in packaging

satisfaction and opportunities for brands to improve packaging. According to Packaging Matters, only 17% of consumers are “very satisfied” with beauty packaging, providing significant opportunity for brands to improve packaging to further meet consumer expectations. Going Beyond Just Packaging Packaging should delight in use, both functionally and aesthetically. MWV found beauty packaging performs very well on shelf appeal features, such as attractive and distinctiveness, but these attributes are relatively less important to overall satisfaction. Beauty brands excel at persuading consumers to choose one product over another from a

crowded shelf, but once the product leaves the store, well, it’s a different story. Packaging Matters revealed brands spend the most time, money and energy to make products look beautiful on the shelf, but not enough time on meeting the functional packaging needs of consumers. In contrast, beauty is underperforming in attributes related to the functionality of the packaging. Think about the implications for your brand: a luxury perfume that drips out of the bottle instead of spraying in an even mist, or a cream with a dispenser that delivers too much cream per pump. When these functional aspects of packaging fail, they have the potential to negatively impact consumer opinion, driving a negative emotional connection and providing a reason to try a

42 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

competitor’s product next time. MWV’s research also found that among the “functional” attributes that frustrate consumers most is the inability to get the entire product out of the package for use. There have been reports of consumers cutting the ends of tubes or placing products in the microwave to ensure that they are using every ounce. Consumers want the most for their money and demand that packaging allows them to get every last drop. This is one of the most basic, functional components of packaging. Significant gaps found in other functional or structural packaging features include: protecting from breaking or spilling and maintaining product integrity. The Packaging Matters research revealed consumers are most

satisfied at the point of purchase (49% satisfied), but satisfaction actively declines throughout the product lifecycle—from transport (47% satisfied), to use (26% satisfied) to disposal (26% satisfied). This means your brand promise, as communicated through packaging, ends at the store. It is those same functional attributes of packaging that matter through the later stages of the product lifecycle (easy to open/reclose, easy to pump/dispense, and maintaining product integrity). This means improving structural elements can help increase satisfaction after the product leaves the store shelf throughout the packaging lifecycle. While form may help sell a product on the shelf, function can play an important role in repeat purchase. Making It Work Let’s apply the Packaging Matters findings to the fragrance segment. The effort to develop and market a new luxury fragrance may be rendered useless if the spray head underperforms on functional expectations, leaving the consumer disenchanted with the brand and less likely to make a repeat purchase. Whether a fragrance spray is fine and powerful with a whisper sound, or long and uniform

with a weightless, sensual feel, MWV’s research shows functional components of packaging can create an emotional connection with consumers. This emphasis on function over form contradicts conventional wisdom, but carefully designed packaging can delight consumers throughout the product lifecycle. As consumers continue to trend toward online shopping, aesthetics and shelf appeal will become even less important as consumers make purchasing decisions based on recommendations from Facebook friends raving about a new beauty product or review from users on Sephora.com. Yesterday’s retail shelf has become today’s Facebook timeline, Twitter feed and Pinterest board. According to Forrester, 192 million U.S. customers will shop online in 2016, up 15% from 2012. This means beauty brands must act fast: consumers rank packaging that protects from breaking and spilling as two of the most important attributes in overall packaging satisfaction. In other words, what does matter is the condition in which the product arrives at a consumer’s doorstep, how easy it is to store under the sink and how it lives up to expectations during use. If shampoo spills or breaks en route from the grocery delivery service, it’s

unlikely a consumer will re-purchase that product. And as grocery lists become digital, woe betide brands removed from the “My Favorites” list. Without the visual cue in the aisle, chances are that brand is off the list

43 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

for good. In today’s omnichannel marketplace, packaging is still the only marketing communications vehicle that reaches 100% of shoppers. It has the power to affect purchase intent, overall product satisfaction and repeat purchase behavior.

Innovative technique creates large skin flaps for full-face resurfacing Patients with massive burns causing complete loss of the facial skin pose a difficult challenge for reconstructive surgeons. Now a group of surgeons in China have developed an innovative technique for creating a one-piece skin flap large enough to perform full-face resurfacing, reports The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health. Dr. QingFeng Li and colleagues of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine describe their approach to creating "monoblock" flaps for use in extensive face skin resurfacing. In their successful experience with five severely disfigured patients, the full-face tissue flap "provides universally matched skin and nearnormal facial contour." New Technique Grows One-Piece Skin Flaps for Full-Face Resurfacing Complete destruction of the facial skin and underlying (subcutaneous) tissues presents "the most challenging dilemma" in facial reconstructive surgery. Multiple skin flaps and grafts are needed to provide complete coverage, creating a "patchwork" appearance. Standard skin grafts are also too bulky to provide good reconstruction of the delicate features and expressive movement of the normal facial skin. To meet these challenges, Dr. Li and colleagues have developed a new technique for creating a single, large skin flap appropriate for use in fullface resurfacing. Their approach starts with "prefabrication" of a flap of the patient's own skin, harvested from another part of the body. The skin flap, along with its carefully preserved blood supply, is allowed to grow for some weeks in a "pocket" created under the patient's skin of the patient's upper chest. Tissue expanders -- balloon-like

devices gradually filled with saline solution -- are used to enlarge the skin flap over time. While skin expansion is a standard technique for creation of skin flaps, Dr. Li and his team used an "overexpansion" approach to create very large flaps of relatively thin skin -- ideal for use in the facial area. In some cases, when the skin flap was growing too thin, stem cells derived from the patients' own bone marrow were used as an aid to tissue expansion.

organs of the head and neck. Dr. Li and coauthors believe their technique, although complex, provides a valuable new approach to reconstruction for patients with complete destruction of the facial skin. They conclude, "It is a reliable and an excellent reconstructive option for massive facial skin defects."

Using this technique, Dr. Li and colleagues were able to create very large skin flaps -- up to 30 Ă— 30 cm -- for use in full-face resurfacing. In the new article, they describe their use of their prefabrication/overexpansion technique in five patients with complete loss of the facial skin, caused by flame or chemical burns. All patients had previously undergone facial reconstruction, but were left with severe deformity and limited facial movement. The "monoblock" allowed the surgeons to perform complete facial resurfacing using a single flap of the patient's own skin. The large flap size avoided problems with a "patchwork" appearance, while the thin flap width was well-suited for reconstruction of the facial features. Multiple surgeries were needed to refine the results and to manage complications. However, all five patients eventually achieved a more normal appearance and better functioning -- including improved emotional expression. The researchers emphasize that their patients with massive facial burns, while severely disfigured, differ from those with deeper tissue destruction who are candidates for face transplantation. Patients being considered for face transplantation have destruction not only of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, but also of the underlying facial muscles and 44 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

Natural Cosmetics Not Living up to their Marketing Claims terms of their natural and organic formulations: Garnier Bio Active (L’Oreal), Diadermine Bio Expertise (Henkel) and Johnson’s Natural (Johnson & Johnson). The high naturalness ratings of these brands epitomize how the natural and organic arena has evolved from just having small niche brands. Natural & Organic Certification Not all certifications are created equally. While natural and organic certification agencies like ECOCERT, Soil Association, BDIH, NPA and NaTrue standardize what constitutes a natural product, the report criticized Fair Trade organizations which allow cosmetics to be certified Fair Trade if they contain a minimum level of Fair Trade ingredients. Some consumers perceive these products as natural since they are certified and often marketed on their Fair Trade (natural) ingredients.

N

ew research by Organic Monitor finds that few brands marketing cosmetics as ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ are living up to their claims. Organic Monitor assessed over 50 cosmetic brands and ranked them according to their level of ‘naturalness’. The research was led by a chartered chemist who analyzed the formulations of natural and organic cosmetics and compared them to their marketing claims. Brands were categorized by their rankings as follows: Certified organic cosmetics received the highest rating (9-10), pure natural cosmetics were rated 5-7, naturally inspired cosmetics 2 and conventional cosmetics 1.

The study found that the majority of brand’s formulations do not accurately reflect their marketing claims. Products that claim to be 100% natural were discovered to include synthetic preservatives, emollients and surfactants. Some brands with ‘natural’ claims were conventionally formulated, and several organic cosmetics did not even meet natural standards.

certification as it adds continuity to the industry with strict standards and guidelines on allowed natural formulation processes and ingredients. Moreover, Organic Monitor encourages companies to become certified and establish trust with consumers by helping them distinguish a truly natural product from a falsely labeled one.

However, the study did show that products certified by a recognized agency received the highest ranking. Although, some products contain certified organic ingredients, the formulations still have synthetic ingredients not common to natural and organic products.

Natural Cosmetic Brands Assessed Brands that received high naturalness scores include: Intelligent Nutrients, Green People and Living Nature. Intelligent Nutrients products received high naturalness ratings, as they contain high levels of organic (food) ingredients, with almost all products certified organic.

Organic Monitor emphasizes the importance of natural or organic

New brands launched by large multinationals also scored high in

54 Beauty & Fashion World | Special Edition | September 2014

The study went on to show that many certified Fair Trade cosmetics received low naturalness ratings because of high levels of synthetic ingredients. Organic Monitor calls for Fair Trade certification standards to be tighten so they do not add to consumer confusion of what constitutes natural and organic cosmetics. According to the study’s findings, the level of naturalness of brands varies considerably between geographic regions. European brands, partly because of the high adoption rates of natural and organic standards, score highest. North American brands are the second most natural, and whilst brands in other regions generally receive lower ratings. Although a growing number of Asian and Latin American brands are emphasizing their natural – and in many cases, indigenous – ingredients, the formulations are usually high in synthetic preservatives, emulsifiers and other ingredients.
