By 2018, the global beauty industry will be valued at $461 billion Growth will be driven by evolving demographics, new products, formats and formulations, dynamic distribution channels and technologies, and, of course, innovative thinking—all focused on one thing: the global beauty consumer.Every year, these consumers are confronted by thousands upon thousands of new beauty care products, so brand success is always far from assured. That’s why savvy product developers and brand marketers spend so much time seeking the most critical resource of all: knowledge. India’s retail beauty and cosmetics industry, currently estimated at $950 million, is likely to almost treble to $2.68 billion by 2020, experts said. Annual growth in the Indian beauty and cosmetics markets is estimated to remain in the range of 15-20 percent in the coming years, twice as fast as that of the US and European markets. Massooma, Editor at New Age Salon & Spa magazine and knowledge partner for ‘International Beauty Mart’ (IBM) 2014, believes awareness in India of the latest global beauty trends and the numbers are prompting more international players to set up shop and increase their presence in India. “Driven by growing consumption in rural and semi-urban areas, the fastmoving consumer goods (FMCG) market is set to double from $14.7 billion in 2008-09 to $30 billion in 2014 in order to become the fourth largest sector in the economy with a market size in excess of $14.7 billion,” Manoj Mehta, chairman, IBM 2014, said. According to a study titled “Prospects in the FMCG sector,” recently made public by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, FMCG sector will witness more than 50 percent growth in rural and semiurban India by 2014. Seeing the growth of the cosmetics market in the country, International Beauty Mart (IBM) will be held here at Ashok Hotel between Jan 14 and Jan 16 next year. There will be a gathering of brands, companies and experts showcasing their products, trends and services before a niche and exclusive professional audience. “India’s cosmetics market is reportedly growing at 15-20 percent annually, twice as fast as that of the US and European markets. Demand for skin whitening products by men as well as women, is driving the trend but other beauty products are not far behind,” she said in a statement. Over the last five years, cosmetics products have seen a growth of 60 percent. Skin care cosmetics have experienced a relatively slower growth and products such as anti-wrinkle creams, cleansers and toners are not as popular as facial creams, moisturisers and fairness creams in this genre. Cure for cracked heels this winter During harsh winters we often tend to care less for our feet. We work all day and apply lotions and creams to our hands, neck and face but we miss out the most important part that is feet. Despite of covering it with stockings, socks and other woollen and footwear, our foot seems to work more than hands so need proper delicate care for the season. Most often we see women with cracked heels that are very deep to get cured very soon. It looks pretty awkward when one notices and interrupts about your cracked heels, especially, when you are middle of a party or celebration. For this Ms. Monica Sood, MD TBC by Nature shares some easy hacks to keep our feet and heels soft and tender this winter.

1. Oil Massage Oils are the best natural moisturizers, not only for your dry feet but also for your skin anywhere. You can either use any hydrogenated oil alone or mix them to get added benefits of their different components. 2. Glycerin-Rosewater Remedy Glycerin is one of the best moisturizers that one can imagine. Applying glycerin on cracked heels can accelerate the healing process as well. Blend together one tablespoon of glycerin with two teaspoons of rosewater and half a tea spoon of freshly extracted lemon juice. Apply this mixture on your heels and wear a pair of clean socks. You should follow this remedy just before you turn in for the night. It can give you smooth and soft heels without any cracks.

feet, and put your feet up for half an hour. When the time is up, rinse your feet with cool water. 4. Rice Flour Scrub for Cracked Heels Not exfoliating your feet is also a reason for dry and cracked heels. So, exfoliating them is also necessary. The Hair Mistakes That Make You Look Older A bad hairstyle isn’t always so easy to identify—and, chances are, if you don’t have a total hacksaw job, you probably think you are doing everything right with your current look. Here are eight mistakes that might be costing you. Mistake 1: Letting it Grow Out too Long There is one common style mistake that he sees women make time and time again: not getting a haircut often enough. “Even just a trim will keep hair in its best shape. Split ends climb up the hair, so, for long hair especially, It is recommended a trim every seven weeks.” Mistake 2: Sporting a Color That Washes You Out Sure, color is a totally separate category that could go on for endless contents in the story of hairstyles, but the ultimate way you can add years to your look: sporting hair color that is way too blond. “It can wash out a woman’s skin tone,” Grenia says. “Having a natural root base with subtle balayage highlights around the face and ends will bring out your eyes and skin.”

Mistake 3: Out-of-Date Do Even if you’ve kicked your hairspray obsession and mile-high bangs to the curb, chances are you may still be making a very common hair mistake that looks more tired than on trend. The biggest don’t, according to Grenia: a dated, over-layered haircut and bad, stripy highlights.

Mistake 4: Not Refreshing Your Bangs What is the fastest thing you can do to update your hairstyle? Change your fringe. “It is an easy fix for updating your hairstyle." “Or, simply switch up how you part your hair— it can change the feel of a cut.” Mistake 5: Trying to Recreate the Look You Got at the Salon—Minus the Proper Tools This one is a little hard to get your head (or hair, literally) wrapped around. If you like the look you get at the salon, you should still like it when you get home and do the same thing, right? Jasmine Anna Galazka, leading stylist at the Warren Tricomi Flagship Salon in the Plaza Hotel, NYC and educator for Shu Uemura and Kerastase, says it's not that simple—especially when it comes to operating the almighty hot tool. "The biggest mistake people make is when they try to recreate what their stylists have done in the salon at home without being taught the proper way, especially when it comes to using hot tools. Those perfect hair-sprayed-to-death 'prom curls,' as I like to call them, are a complete no-no. Not only are they circa '92, but they are super unnatural. Instead, use a curling iron to create a bend to the hair, instead of an actual curl from roots to ends."

It's not really new information that color can be really hard to keep up with. "Faded color might appear aged.". "Instead, opt for revitalizing your shade by going to your colorist for a gloss in-between visits. But we also walk a fine line between wanting a rooted color and then, not coloring your hair for three-months-plus." Her tip: If your natural root color exceeds more then four inches, it's aging and it's time to color that mane. Mistake 8: Ends That Are Fried Keeping the ends of your hair fresh will always make you look younger and more polished. "A lot of times we do so much mechanical damage to our hair, we forget to treat it," Galazka says, and suggests that, if you aren't ready for a trim, revitalizing the midshaft to ends by going to the salon once a month and doing a deep-conditioning treatment. "Not only will this keep your strands looking shiny but younger-looking as well."

Mistake 6: Not Properly Drying Your Hair in the Morning Doing a bad blow-dry can sometimes really backfire. "It can leave your ends looking frizzy or lead to unwanted volume if you have curly hair. Having the right tools—the proper brush, blow-dryer and product—and being patient will lead you to success." Mistake 7: Faded Color Beauty & Fashion World | January-February 2017 | 9

The 10 Commandments for Preserving Your Curls

C

aring for and styling curly hair can be a trying challenge, especially when it's prone to wilting or frizzing with the slightest temperature change. But it doesn't have to be that way. With a little love and care, you can have a great set of twirls that lasts for days. Follow these ten rules for gorgeous curls, coils and spirals. 1. Thou shall honor thy curl type and texture. Curls come in many variations. "With different curl textures come different challenges. Fine curls need hold and volume, while coarse curls need frizz protection. It's rare to find a one-stop solution for every curl pattern because they are so unique and require a personalized prescription to enhance and allow them to look their best," says Melanie Fahey, assistant vice president of creative & education at Ouidad. In other words, what works for one curly gal might not work for another. So experiment with different cocktails and brands until you find the right combo that works for your specific hair type. If your curls are wavy, try Hair Rules Wavy

Mousse. If they're thick and coarse, try SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé. 2. Thou shall get regular trims. Healthy hair is key for gorgeous curls. Hair looks its best when it has a great shape with no split ends. Thus, for curls that really bounce it's necessary to get regular trims and maintain the shape of your cut. To get the most out of your hair's natural curl pattern without hours of styling time in the summer hairstylist Diane C. Bailey suggests getting a professional cut by a stylist who's a textured-hair expert. "The stylist can take into account your face shape, curl pattern, hair condition, porosity and the way you like to style your hair to give you the ideal cut. This will help you rock your textured hair in its natural state all summer long." 3. Thou shall not overcleanse. Sulfate shampoos strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dry, brittle strands. Anthony Dickey, hairstylist and owner of Hair Rules Salon in New York City, suggests washing your hair with a non-sudsing, sulfatefree creamy cleanser once or twice a week to help maintain the moisture

16 | January-February 2017| Beauty & Fashion World

balance of your hair. (Try Hair Rules Cleansing Cream, or if you prefer to co-wash, try SheaMoisture Superfruit Multi-Vitamin Conditioning Wash.) Between shampoos, revitalize curls with spritzes of your favorite leave-in conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle, says hairstylist Larry Sims. If you're lazy like us, try Garnier Fructis Style Curl Renew Reactivating Milk Spray. 4. Thou shall prime thy tresses when sopping wet. The secret to keeping your curls springy and bouncy for days has to do with what you do with your hair while it's still wet. Curls are very delicate and get dehydrated easily, causing them not to keep their shape. Adding hydration to your hair gives it an internal weight that defines the curl pattern and won't cause it to frizz. After cleansing, fully saturate your strands with conditioner. "It helps weigh down the hair and properly define the curl pattern," says Dickey. While your hair is loaded with conditioner, detangle your hair using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush to prevent breakage and preserve

the shape of your curls. (Don't comb your hair once the conditioner has been rinsed off; otherwise, your curls will separate and frizz.) For an added boost to your hair's internal structure, Ouidad, hairstylist and founder of Ouidad salon in New York City, suggests augmenting your regular regimen with a deep-conditioning treatment or penetrating mask (like the Ouidad Curl Immersion Triple Treat Deep Conditioner) every ten days. After conditioning, rinse your hair and prime wet curls with leave-in conditioner followed by your favorite styling products. “You need a leave-in that will give your curls the extra moisture and hydration balance they require but without feeling heavy or with residue,” says Fahey. For fine to medium textures, consider Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave-in Conditioner. If your hair is very coarse and coiled, lightly coat sections in a downward motion from roots to ends with an extra conditioning treatment, like Mizani True Textures Curl Enhancing Lotion or Cantu Smoothing Leave-In Conditioning Lotion, to control unruly strands.

GoGlam Get The Woe Factor 22 | January-February 2017| Beauty & Fashion World

beauty|secrets Here are brilliant face care tips to get that glow you've always wanted. Browse through our beauty secrets, tackle your skincare issues and follow our tricks regularly to get beautiful skin naturally. Excited, happy or stressed, it’s your face that gives you away. So we’ve rounded up expert tips on daily skin care, keeping blemishes at bay and enhancing your natural beauty. Whether you have time for intensive skin care or not, pamper yourself by acing the basics. Why God, why? Is flawless skin just too much to ask for? A late night leads to dark circles in the morning. Got an upcoming party? Oh wait, I spy a zit. Yes yes, we are well aware of the basic CTM technique… Cleanser-Toner-Moisturizer. We try every new face wash, sunscreen, anti-ageing cream that hits the market. If dry skin and dead skin, oily skin and patchy skin weren’t enough - you now have combination skin! And we are ever so willing to try

anything under the sun to get beautiful skin. But it is not an overnight miracle. Lucky for you, we make face-care easy.

10 Dos and Don’ts for Beautiful Skin 1. The Golden Rule Do: Make sure you always (and we mean always) remove your makeup before hitting the sheets. The skin needs to breathe overnight. And makeup prevents that, as leaving it on overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and/or blackheads. Don’t possess a makeup remover? Just put some olive oil on a cotton pad and gently massage the oil onto your face to get rid of the makeup and dirt. Don’t: Forget that exfoliation is indispensable. At least once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin to remove the layers of dead skin, sure

to leave you with a more healthy glow and brighter skin. You can also apply a paste of walnut in powder form with yogurt to exfoliate your skin, as the antioxidants present in walnuts help remove dirt and promote radiant skin. face-care-tips-beautiful-skin-2 2. Sun and Skin Do: Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Since a lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems, you have to protect your skin from the sun. Make sure the label reads ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘nonacnegenic’ so that the product does not tend to block pores. Don’t: Skip the sunscreen, whether it's cloudy or cold outside (no excuses). If you’re heading to a beach or around reflective surfaces like snow or ice, lather your skin up with some more sunscreen with SPF of at least 30.

3. You are What You Eat Do: Keep a note of what you put on your plate. Eat fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein and vitamins. A diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin. Consider a low-sugar diet, which can keep insulin levels down, allowing cells to maintain a healthy balance. "Don’t: Eat spicy and fermented foods, salt, citrus fruits, fried food. Instead favour blander foods such as rice, oatmeal and applesauce”, advises American author and Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad, in The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies. 4. Sweat It Out! Do: Exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after working out. Racing against time? Just take a brisk walk around the block. Don’t: Skip skincare before and after a workout. Apply a toner to help minimize oil production before heading out. Exfoliate after, and then apply shea butter or olive oil to moisturize the skin. 5. Beauty Sleep Do: Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you - it sags and you get bags. So don’t risk it. You can also apply honey on your face twice or thrice a week to naturally soothe and heal your skin. “Don’t: Forget to wash and moisturize your face before going to bed”, recommends Dr. Rahul Nagar, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. “For dry skin, use milder cleansers that are free from alcohol. Apply lots of moisturizer, and avoid hot water as it dries out the skin excessively.” 6. H2O to The Rescue Do: Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eats fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry, grapefruit and cantaloupe.

beauty|secrets Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad recommends to “drink water from a blue coloured bottle”, since it has a cooling effect. Don’t: Ignore rose water. It helps prevent and reduce eye puffiness in the morning, maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates your skin if you spritz it on during the day.

9. Spa Day Everyday? Do: Have a regular skin care regimen. “For dry skin, use a fresh cherry mask. Apply the pulp of fresh cherries on your face before going to bed. Leave for 15 minutes and wash with lukewarm water”, adds American author Vasant Lad. Don’t: Forget to pamper yourself.

7. Goodbye Acne “Do: Wash your face with warm water, three times a day, and gently massage your face in circular motions, ensuring that the cleanser contains alpha hydroxyl acid or beta hydroxyl acid. Face packs that contain multani mitti (fuller’s earth) work really well too. After cleansing, pat dry and apply a lotion which contains benzoyl peroxide”, suggests Dr. Zaheer Ahmed, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. Benzoyl peroxide appears to be effective due to its antibacterial actions.

A gentle facial massage with oils could work wonders. Depending on your skin type, choose oils from mustard, coconut, almond or Kumkadi as they are excellent nourishing agents which help to get glowing skin. Better still – switch on some soothing instrumental music. After 20 minutes, what do you have? Beautiful skin and a relaxed you.

Don’t: Pop pimples because it can lead to more swelling, redness, and even scarring. Feel a pimple is on its way? Just clean the area with rose water, and place a chilled green tea bag for 10 minutes. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose. 8. Go Back to Your Roots Do: Use Ayurvedic scrubs to nourish the skin, and help it breathe better. Luckily for you, everything you need is already in your kitchen. 2 tbsp chickpea flour, ½ tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of camphor and sandalwood with some rose water/milk/water is your perfect skincare pack. Yes, the secrets of beauty lies in ancient Ayurveda. Don’t: Neglect the basics. Make Sudarshan Kriya your beauty mantra. Yes, it’s that easy. Just breathing right could rid you of spots and pimples. Nidhi Gureja, Art of Living, says “Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique which incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath that harmonize the body, mind and emotions. This helps releasing accumulated stresses, and each individual’s experience is different.” 24 | January-February 2017| Beauty & Fashion World

10. Healthy Habits Do: Take out time for yourself, and try to avoid stress as much as possible. Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you tend to break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, making the skin more oily. Practice stress management techniques like breathing exercises, yoga and meditation. The more you meditate, the more you radiate. Don’t: Neglect your jawline and facial muscles. For just 5 minutes a day, perform a few facial exercises. You can jut out your lower lip in such a way that wrinkles are created on the chin, then lower your chin to your chest. Another exercise that works wonders is to look up towards the ceiling and pout. It stretches out the muscles making the skin more firm. “18 till I die”, why not? You’re dressed to perfection, yet you need something to complete the look. Your smile! While we spend so much time and energy on honing our bodies and looks, we forget to express our inner joy and happiness. “Keeping a smile on your face will help maintain the tone of your facial muscles and skin. People may say you look 10 years younger than you are!”, adds the Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad.

IST! Individual Skin Technology Individual skin care products. On site. Right away. Exclusive. The individual skin care formula for your customer’s skin. As soon as the formula is calculated, the computer selects several of the various base components to produce the base cream tailored to the unique properties of your customer’s skin. The sterile-packed and sealed base product is opened and placed in the IST! Creamer. As calculated by the computer, the Creamer dispenses the concentrates into the base product to produce the optimal formula. The system can select among 17 active ingredient concentrations to add to the base. The amounts of the active ingredients are finely measured to produce a product suited exactly to the unique needs of your customer’s skin.

W

hich customer has not dreamed of a cream exclusively created just for her? With the world novelty IST! system you can now offer your customers to fulfill this wish professionally – on side and with all comforts. You can only provide an optimum skin care product when you know exactly the individual properties of your customer’s skin. This is easier said than done. Measuring the pH-value of the protective acid mantle and the sebum content of the protective lipid mantle, essential for designing the optimum skin care, is not easy. Until now, these values could only be determined approximately. IST! Individual Skin Technology makes this now as an innovative, computerised method possible. For this purpose, IST! performs direct computer measurements of the following values: the skin lipid content using a specially developed measuring cassette the skin moisture content according to the established Corneometer-principle and the pH-value of the skin using a special pHelectrode. These computer data are supplemented by information from a detailed questionnaire that you fill out with your customer. for directly measuring and analysing the condition of the skin,

for designing an individual cosmetic formula suited to the current, individual properties of the skin, and on this basis, for producing a corresponding individual skin care product, IST! represents the first of its kind in the world. Several years of product development in collaboration with leading international experts has made this possible. IST! ‘asks’ the skin itself. And the skin finally gets the care that is truly right and therefore the best for it. A specialised IST! software program determines the optimal combination of ingredients to produce the skin care product for your customer’s unique skin. And it calculates the ideal product formula:

Jar reverse side: You will find your customer’s name

These high quality active ingredients include encapsulated plant stem cells, the latest generation of quality peptides such as tripeptides and hexapeptides as a reversible Botox alternative, enzymes to activate cell metabolism, lipofillers to reduce wrinkles, flavonoids for regeneration, and NMF factors to moisturise the skin. IST! products do not contain parabens, preservatives, fragrances, or mineral oils. Your customer will immediately notice the difference between conventional products and the IST! skin care cream. IST! The most individual and optimum skin care cream for your customer possible.

All you need to know for 30’s Skin Care By Divya Mehta , Co-Founder, Epique:

M

y friends bought me a bottle of supplements as a gag gift for my birthday. That got me thinking of all the changes my body and skin would be going through in this decade, my 30s.

your skin can breathe properly and clean skin also helps with the efficacy of the products you apply. Without proper absorption, the cream will not be able to benefit your skin, as it should. Clean skin is happy, receptive skin.

Seeing everyone around me juggle work, home, children and myriad other pressures made me realize that what the body needed now was definitely different from what it required in our twenties and it was now time to take our skin seriously.

2. Exfoliate to boost your cell renewal

As you enter your thirties and progress through the decade, your hormone levels change and your skin renewal cycle slows down. This could be accompanied by occasional breakouts, your skin feeling dry or tight, the appearance of fine lines around the eyes and mouth or even pigmentation. Also,at this age skin consultation becomes necessary to know the changes your skin is facing and one should know accordingly how to tackle those changes. The most important thing is to find products that meet the needs of your skin as it matures. It's time to understand your skin better and care for it according to your unique needs. So, get a consult in your city to get a better and comprehensive understanding of your skin. Some of the things we need to keep in mind are simple and easily achievable. A little can go a long way. 1. Cleansing, not only the first step but the foundation Start and end your day with using a gel-based cleanser that is gentle yet effective. Cleansing ensures that

Twice or thrice a week, exfoliate to get rid of all the surface dead skin cells. This helps with cell turnover and increases circulation. The result: healthy skin that glows naturally. 3. The one-minute facial Warm the product in your hands to help it penetrate the skin better. Massage your face in upward motions using the tips of your fingers and stimulate your skin by tapping on it gently. End the massage by wrapping your hands on your face to give an added massage to the dermis.. A minute a day will help keep dull skin at bay. 4. UV Protection is a must A good sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays with a high SPF is a necessity when protecting your skin from the harsh Indian Summer. It is the one essential step that you must include in your regimen, no matter what age you are. Use it daily whether you step out or not because research has shown that sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging, fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation to name a few. 5. Prep your skin for the night and sleep tight 7-8 hours of a good night’s sleep

anti-aging|skincare helps the body regenerate and repair itself for the next day. Like you, your skin is tired at the end of the day. If you tend to skip your night time routine because it is the last thing you do and are more often than not too tired to go through any fuss, shift it up to early evening when you have more energy.

hydrated, supple skin ages better. Water is important for your entire body so remember to hit the bottle.

Try not to skip the night routine, as its sole purpose is to nurse and repair your tired skin and is a must post thirty.

Ageing need not be the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about or address. It is a natural part of life and all we need to do is stay in touch with our bodies and its requirements as we grow and change. Follow some simple steps and suddenly it isn’t as scary as before.

6. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Enjoy the skin you are in and stay Beauty Eternal.

Drink plenty of water and keep yourself and your skin well hydrated. Well

The Best Ways to Your Hair Care E

xperts say harsh winter weather and a change in temperatures can be hair's No. 1 enemy. Here's why -- and what to do.

From hat hair to static electricity, split ends to dry frizz, when winter weather hits, a bad hair day can last an entire season. In fact, even if you live in a moderate climate, experts say you're still susceptible to hair-raising changes as the seasons pass. "The environment can have some of the most damaging effects on hair in both summer and winter, but in winter it's often worse because people generally don't take as many precautions to protect their hair," says celebrity stylist Nick Chavez, owner of the Nick Chavez Beverly Hills Salon and a QVC hair care expert. Sun exposure (which can be as intense on a ski slope as it is on a beach) combined with a blustery winter wind (which can snarl hair) as well as snow, rain, and icy cold (which makes hair brittle and dry) can all come together to create some pretty bad winter hair days, winter is still your hair's enemy. The reason is indoor heating, which experts say can be something akin to spending an entire afternoon under a hair dryer! The good news: No matter what's causing your winter hair woes, you can take both protective and replenishing steps. At the top of the list for most stylists: regular use of a thick, rich, moisturizing conditioner with a few key ingredients. If you are blessed with thick or curly African-American hair, or ultra thick, heavy Asian hair, then you need a thick, heavy conditioning hair pack -- a deep treatment you leave on for about a half-hour, once or twice a week. But because these hair types generally hold oil at the roots -- one reason the rest of the hair can seem so ultra dry -- it's especially important not to condition the area closest to the scalp. "You should always apply product beginning 2 inches away from the scalp and pull it through the hair to the ends. If your hair is very fine, thin, and flyaway, Harris says avoid the conditioning pack -- it's just too heavy even for severely

damaged hair. Instead, he says, use a regular conditioner every time you wash your hair, supplemented with a light conditioning leave-in spray. "But it has to be very light or it will weigh down fine hair and make it flat and limp. We suggests the new "dry oil" sprays. These mostlysilicone based products go on dry so they don't weight hair down, but still offer a layer of protection against the elements. Hair experts suggest supplementing your storebought products with all-natural treatments of vegetable oil. The experts choice is safflower and olive oil. In either case, they say simply put a few drops of the oil in the palm of your hand, rub until skin "glistens," then starting at the bottom and working upwards, run your fingers through your hair. "You can do this after you dry your hair, or between washings -- when you come in from the cold or anytime your hair looks very dry -- it really works Another tip: Every time you put on hand cream, touch the ends of your hair and scrunch to help deposit a bit more moisture where it's needed most. Static Cling and Other Hair Styling Snafus As anyone who's ever tried to pull socks out of a clothes dryer can tell you, static electricity can be a powerful force. But sticky socks are the least of your problems when compared with what static can do to your hair. The remedy is the same one you use on your laundry: a fabric softening dryer sheet like Bounce! "Just rub it lightly on your hair and it will remove the static. Slightly more conventional is using a natural boar bristle hairbrush with a wooden handle, which Harris says can also reduce static. When it comes to styling winter hair, a few quick product switches may be all you need to combat most problems. For Harris, it starts with substituting a hair cream for your usual styling gel. Styling creams now trump the gel market because they add moisture to the hair, make it

more pliable, and give it better elasticity so it's less likely to break -- all extremely important in winter. In fact, when choosing any winter hair styling products including holding sprays, Harris says avoid high alcohol content, which can be drying to hair. Likewise he says avoid putting fragrance directly on your hair since its alcohol content can also cause your tresses to look and feel dry and brittle. Most importantly, limit your time under a blow dryer -good advice all year round but essential in winter, he says. To do that and still effectively style your hair Harris says use a towel to gently blot about 20% of the moisture content out of our hair, then hit it with the heat, stopping the moment your hair is dry. To cut down on the proverbial "hat hair," experts say pull longer locks into a pony tail high on your head, or push short hair straight back, before putting on the hat. Pushing hair against the way your style should fall, will help it spring out with bounce once the hat is removed. Shampoos and Color Treatments: Your Best Choice for Hair Care While conditioning and styling products may help hold your style, celebrity and fashion stylist Jamal Hammadi says choosing the right shampoo may net you perhaps the biggest winter hair payoff.

How to Find the Right Skin Moisturizer

K

nowing what your skin needs will help you make the right decision. (Hint: Choose one with sunscreen.) Feel overwhelmed when you want to buy skin moisturizer for your dry skin? That’s no surprise, as there are dozens to choose from at the drugstore and hundreds more at high-end cosmetics and department stores — creams, lotions, ointments, some with sunscreen, others with an exfoliant. Choices range from the basic $1.50 jar of petroleum jelly to a $500 five-ounce tub of designer skin moisturizer. And all the options in between can make your head spin. While choosing the right skin moisturizer may seem confusing, it’s

actually very simple if you follow a few guidelines, says dermatologist Monica Halem, MD, of ColumbiaDoctors Eastside in New York City. Dr. Halem’s first rule of thumb? Don’t spend too much money. How a Skin Moisturizer Works Cleansers and moisturizers are the most important skin products, particularly for softening dry skin. A skin moisturizer works by sealing moisture into the outer layer of the skin and by pulling moisture from the inner layers of skin to the outer layer. Key ingredients that seal in moisture are petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin, and dimethicone. Glycerin,

52 | January-February 2017| Beauty & Fashion World

propylene glycol, proteins, urea, and vitamins help attract water into the outer layer of the skin. Some skin moisturizers also contain an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which exfoliates dead skin, says Francesca Fusco, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and a spokeswoman for the Skin Cancer Foundation. AHAs are a good choice if you have very dry skin. Finding the Skin Moisturizer For You It may take some trial and error, Halem says, so be patient. Follow these guidelines as you shop and, if you’re not getting the results you want, try a new one the next time:

Note the first five ingredients. Look for common active ingredients, such as lanolin, glycerin, or petrolatum, Dr. Fusco says. Glycerin is less likely than lanolin to cause an allergic reaction, she says. She also recommends picking a moisturizer that’s made by a reputable company. Go for added sunscreen. Protecting your skin from harmful sun damage is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking young, so buy a moisturizer with a sun protection factor of at least 30. You’ll have to do some searching, but more companies are offering face and body moisturizers with sunscreen, Halem says. Make it skin-type appropriate. The skin on your face is thinner and

s k i n | c a r e

more sensitive, so it’s a good idea to use a different moisturizer on your face than you do on your body, Fusco says and recommends buying one that’s labeled “noncomedogenic” because it won’t clog your pores. Of course, choose one that’s right for your skin type. If you know you have sensitive skin, it’s always a good idea to look for a moisturizer labeled hypoallergenic. If you have oily skin, go with a light, oil-free moisturizer. If you have dry skin, get something richer. And if you have combination skin, go with a lighter moisturizer for your whole face and dot drier areas with a heavier cream, Fusco says. Keep in mind that you may need a lighter lotion in the summer, and a cream or ointment in the winter. Consider using a moisturizer with retinol before bed. Retinol is vitamin A for your skin, Halem says. It works by increasing

the speed at which your skin cells turn over. You can find it over the counter or by prescription, but use it carefully as it may cause a skin irritation, red skin, or dry skin. Relief by Prescription If your skin is very dry, consider a prescription moisturizer. Prescription moisturizers contain the AHA lactic acid, which softens the top layer of your skin and can do a better job if over-the-counter moisturizers aren’t working for you, Fusco says.

When to Moisturize Once you find the right product, moisturize every day and you’ll go a long way toward preventing dry skin and even camouflaging wrinkles. While a skin moisturizer can’t get rid of wrinkles — because wrinkles begin much deeper in the skin due to collagen loss — it can plump up the skin and minimize their appearance, Halem says. Whichever moisturizer you choose, it will work better if you apply it to damp skin. Think about a sponge that’s dried out, Fusco says. If you put moisturizer on it, it won’t go anywhere. But if you soak the sponge in water and coat it with moisturizer, the sponge will absorb it. Your skin works the same way, happily lapping it up.

AHAs such as lactic acid and glycolic acid can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Tell your doctor if you experience burning, irritation, red skin, itching, or a rash. Another prescription option is a barrier cream, which contains humectants that hold on to moisture longer, Fusco says. Barrier creams penetrate a little deeper than standard moisturizers, she adds.
