India's Hair Care Market has been growing with a CAGR of 16.95% over the last five years and is projected to increase further by 2021 due to rising personal care, brand awareness, increasing disposable income, growing demand in middle class people and affordable price of hair care products in the form of mass shampoo, hair oil and hair colours. The unorganized market in this industry is not able to keep pace with the organized market. Keeping in point of individuality and personal grooming & care, the youngsters, women, men, etc. majorly fuelled the sales in the hair care market. According to a recent study by AC Nielsen Global Services, the Indian hair care market has shown a growth of 3.8% over the previous year. Although the numbers may not look impressive at first glance, they are positive compared with earlier market growth trend, and the industry is excited about this change. The change is visible at two levels—consumer behavior and marketers trying to grow the market by introducing new product categories and services. The hair care market is considered a mature market in India. Due to increased hair regarding issues, the demand for hair care products like regular and expert shampoos, conditioners, hair colors and hair oils are increasing rapidly, thereby providing high impetus to the Indian hair care market. For the wealthy class beauty treatment and hair colorants have now become a lifestyle need. Hair care has exciting legroom for new product development and manufacturers are trying to convince consumers that they should adopt a hair care regimen through various product launches and aggressive marketing strategies. However, the availability of counterfeit hair care products is one of the major challenges in the market. According to India Hair Care Market survey, HUL, P&G, Dabur, Marico and Godrej are the market leaders in the organized hair care market. India's hair care market is segmented into four categories such as hair oil, hair shampoo, hair colours and hair styling products. Hair oil dominates the market followed by hair shampoo along with its various variants. Marico is leading in the hair oil category while HUL and P&G have the top brands in the shampoo market. Urban India accounts for a considerable market share in the sales of premium hair care products, with hair colours and hair styling products growing rapidly among middle and higher middle class consumers. ANTI-AGING HAIR CARE TIPS

W

hen I started going grey, everything about my hair totally changed. While there are lots of benefits that come with getting older, unfortunately, our hair tends to take a turn for the worse – becoming thinner, drier, and more brittle! Oil glands shrink as we age, so our hair slows down on the production of natural oils. Moisturizing hair by adding oils is important for keeping hair from drying out and breaking off!

Here are some all-natural remedies for strengthening and moisturizing aging hair! First and foremost, healthy hair starts with a healthy diet . Try to get plenty of lean proteins while avoiding too much fat and drinking LOTS of water! You might also consider taking vitamin supplements – vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin B7, and B3 are all essential for hair growth. Getting a regular trim, every 6 to 8 weeks, keeps hair healthy and growing. You can also search for a haircut that will make your hair appear thicker! PureWow put together 6 of the best cuts for thinner hair. Avoid chemical treatments like bleaching, straightening, and dying. It makes the hair more stiff and dry, causing it to break more often. Try not to take super hot, steamy showers. The hot water strips hair of good oils, so you should at least rinse hair with cooler water. Avoid strong, mega-hold styling products. The high alcohol content makes hair dry and brittle. Try making this DIY spray with less hold. Instead of using hair gel, you can use aloe vera gel for a light and healthy hold.

If you do use a lot of hair products (particularly strong or sticky ones), try this recipe to remove any residue from your hair. Cut back on high heat and aggressive styling techniques. You can damage hair follicles by pulling your hair back too tightly, so try to wear it down as much as possible. Washing your hair removes natural oils, so try to skip a few days. A homemade dry shampoo will make your hair fresh and clean without removing any oil! When it comes to washing, wet hair is extremely fragile – so be gentle with it! Brush your hair before showering, when it’s dry, and keep any combing to a minimum afterwards. Instead of wrapping your hair up in a towel after getting out of the shower, just blot wet hair dry with a towel. Replenish oils and moisturize your hair – this is key! Everyone’s hair is different, so I’ve made lots of treatments for different issues. Check out these DIY products and see which would be best for you: Strength and Volume Spray: An everyday remedy to add some moisture and strength. Coconut Oil Deep Conditioner: A weekly treatment that you should let sit for about 30 minutes. The oils penetrate the hair leaving it so smooth! Rice Water: Try making rice water and using it as a hair rinse once or twice a week. It’s really simple to make and so cheap! Argan Oil: Try an overnight moisturizing a treatment, make a serum, or use as a leave-in conditioner.

10 | July-August 2016 | Beauty & Fashion World

Leave-In Conditioner: A simple spray helps your hair to retain moisture throughout the day! At all ages, people lose about 100 hairs per day! Losing hair is natural, but as you age, hair follicles get smaller, producing super fine hairs. This DIY Hair Thickening Mask and Rinse has lots of healthy oils to moisturize, plus the rosemary essential oil stimulates hair growth! Tips and Treatments for Aging Hair If your hair is particularly thin, check your medication for any side-effects.

The 10 Commandments for Preserving Your Curls

C

aring for and styling curly hair can be a trying challenge, especially when it's prone to wilting or frizzing with the slightest temperature change. But it doesn't have to be that way. With a little love and care, you can have a great set of twirls that lasts for days. Follow these ten rules for gorgeous curls, coils and spirals. 1. Thou shall honor thy curl type and texture. Curls come in many variations. "With different curl textures come different challenges. Fine curls need hold and volume, while coarse curls need frizz protection. It's rare to find a one-stop solution for every curl pattern because they are so unique and require a personalized prescription to enhance and allow them to look their best," says Melanie Fahey, assistant vice president of creative & education at Ouidad. In other words, what works for one curly gal might not work for another. So experiment with different cocktails and brands until you find the right combo that works for your specific hair type. If your curls are wavy, try Hair Rules Wavy

Mousse. If they're thick and coarse, try SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Gel Soufflé. 2. Thou shall get regular trims. Healthy hair is key for gorgeous curls. Hair looks its best when it has a great shape with no split ends. Thus, for curls that really bounce it's necessary to get regular trims and maintain the shape of your cut. To get the most out of your hair's natural curl pattern without hours of styling time in the summer hairstylist Diane C. Bailey suggests getting a professional cut by a stylist who's a textured-hair expert. "The stylist can take into account your face shape, curl pattern, hair condition, porosity and the way you like to style your hair to give you the ideal cut. This will help you rock your textured hair in its natural state all summer long." 3. Thou shall not overcleanse. Sulfate shampoos strip your hair of its natural oils, leading to dry, brittle strands. Anthony Dickey, hairstylist and owner of Hair Rules Salon in New York City, suggests washing your hair with a non-sudsing, sulfatefree creamy cleanser once or twice a week to help maintain the moisture

balance of your hair. (Try Hair Rules Cleansing Cream, or if you prefer to co-wash, try SheaMoisture Superfruit Multi-Vitamin Conditioning Wash.) Between shampoos, revitalize curls with spritzes of your favorite leave-in conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle, says hairstylist Larry Sims. If you're lazy like us, try Garnier Fructis Style Curl Renew Reactivating Milk Spray. 4. Thou shall prime thy tresses when sopping wet. The secret to keeping your curls springy and bouncy for days has to do with what you do with your hair while it's still wet. Curls are very delicate and get dehydrated easily, causing them not to keep their shape. Adding hydration to your hair gives it an internal weight that defines the curl pattern and won't cause it to frizz. After cleansing, fully saturate your strands with conditioner. "It helps weigh down the hair and properly define the curl pattern," says Dickey. While your hair is loaded with conditioner, detangle your hair using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush to prevent breakage and preserve

the shape of your curls. (Don't comb your hair once the conditioner has been rinsed off; otherwise, your curls will separate and frizz.) For an added boost to your hair's internal structure, Ouidad, hairstylist and founder of Ouidad salon in New York City, suggests augmenting your regular regimen with a deep-conditioning treatment or penetrating mask (like the Ouidad Curl Immersion Triple Treat Deep Conditioner) every ten days. After conditioning, rinse your hair and prime wet curls with leave-in conditioner followed by your favorite styling products. “You need a leave-in that will give your curls the extra moisture and hydration balance they require but without feeling heavy or with residue,” says Fahey. For fine to medium textures, consider Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave-in Conditioner. If your hair is very coarse and coiled, lightly coat sections in a downward motion from roots to ends with an extra conditioning treatment, like Mizani True Textures Curl Enhancing Lotion or Cantu Smoothing Leave-In Conditioning Lotion, to control unruly strands.

Lifestyle on big expansion drive in India

U

nfazed by the growth of ecommerce, luxury brands retailer Lifestyle International is embarking on a massive expansion drive with plans to open over 40 more stores in India and targets a turnover of Rs 6,750 crore by March 2017. It would be the most aggressive expansion for the company post 2010, according to a media report citing Kabir Lumba MD Lifestyle International, which is part of the Dubai-based retail and hospitality conglomerate Landmark group. The company planned to open around 25-30 Max stores, 10-12 Lifestyle stores and 3-4 Home Center forums in tier I and II cities including Bengaluru, Delhi, Agra, Indore, Lucknow and Howrah, Lumba said adding that their expansion plans had so far been on track although at times the malls got delayed. The

company registered a turnover of Rs 5,700 crore during the last financial year. "We started getting into tier II towns sometime back and we are seeing healthy traction across all regions for both tier I and tier II cities," said Lumba. At present, it has around 230 stores across Lifestyle, Max and Home Centre formats in India. The Indian retail sector is facing huge competition from e-commerce giants like Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra and Snapdeal. However, there is greater confidence among retailers, observed Devangshu Dutta CEO Third Eyesight, a retail consultancy firm. The threat perception from ecommerce platforms in terms of discounting, impacting footfalls was diminishing now, and that augurs well for the domestic retail industry, he said. India is counted among the top 10 retail markets in the world. According to a recent report by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and consulting firm The Boston Consulting Group, the Indian retail sector is expected to double to levels of $1.1-1.2 trillion by 2020 from $630 billion in 2015.

exclusive interview of

Mr. Jatinder Sohal, (JS) GM, Radisson Blu Hotel, Amritsar, India & BFW Magazine Amritsar (also called Ambarsar) is a city in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab in India. At the center of its walled old town is the gilded Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), considered the holiest gurdwara, or religious complex, of the Sikh religion. It’s at the end of a causeway, surrounded by the sacred Amrit Sarovar lake, where pilgrims bathe. Recently, BFW (Beauty & Fashion World) team visited Radisson Blu to explore about this hotel in the holy city of Amritsar and we had a chance to meet the General Manager, Mr. Jitender Sohal and found that this is a great hotel in a quite and lush green location surrounded by beautiful garden and trees also close to a number of amenities. Amazingly, they are very flexible with check-in and check-out timings. Temp was aptly set . Mini bar was well equipped with soft drinks , chocolates, snacks etc. There are 2 restaurant, viz. Tavolo Mondo & Wall of Asia, both are amazing. Gym was well equipped with machines and weights. They did everything possible to keep their guest pampered. As the lady guided you to the room , she explained the facilities that are available in the hotel for your use from Spa , Gym , in-house dining and all. The hotel is clean and the decor is modern with an asian feel. The rooms are large and the bathrooms have shower, baths and toiletries. The spa and swimming pool are cool! However, the best thing about this hotel is the staff, they are very polite and helpful, and provide customer service that is first class and welcomes the guests by traditional SatSriAkal, (Hello) - the receptionists, managers, bar staff, cleaners, chefs and Tavolo Mondo restaurant staff, everything is really great in this well organized hotel. And finally what we say is “EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE, ELEGANT & LUXURIOUS” and the credit goes to Mr. Jatinder Sohal & his team in making this hotel a great destination point for the Pilgrims and regular visitors. Whether you are travelling for business or pleasure, this hotel look forward to welcoming you! me at every step of the cherished journey. My motto for life and also a valued advice with all the years of experience is “Go for your dream! And never forget the people around you. How the people around you feel is the quintessential ingredient to leave behind a legacy and not just a property. What is important is your people should believe in your dream and become a combined force in achieving your vision for the organization, my true legacy would be my people striving for excellence, just the way I do. Pursue your dream! If service, people and travelling is what gives you the fire in your belly then go for it. Working in Hospitality is an adventure with exciting avenues opening up every day.

Jatinder Sohal, GM, Radisson Blu, Amritsar

B

FW: What motivated you to stay with hospitality business and culinary art to become a hotel general manager of an international brand's flagship hotel? JS: Lots of passion and an undying ambition! Hospitality is certainly not a cake walk, you need to be excited about it the minute you start your

It’s equally important to make the most of the challenges, ensuring it to be a constant learning process. Being good at Hospitality takes a certain kind of attitude, you either have it or you don’t! Therefore, while hiring a person, a passion for service is as important a quality as is the right skill-set. BFW: What is unique about your hotel's location and what authentic local experiences do guests have access to? JS: Radisson Blu Hotel is the perfect blend of modernism, simplicity and elegance. We strive to exceed the expectations of each guest, putting our best to make sure the experience, right from the point of checkin to check out, is a complete delight. The Hotel’s architectural style has elements of modernism and contemporary elegance. The boldness of the designs is reflected in its world class suites that are spacious and state of the art. The hotel is in close proximity to the

airport making it a convenient option for business and leisure travelers alike. We try and combine the modern hospitality with the warmth of local culture to provide our guests with memorable experiences. BFW: You may have undergone various training sessions regarding management while working in hotel management. What is the most memorable training session you have ever attended? And what attracts you to working for luxury hotels? JS: For me, the learning never stops! And I strongly believe that there is something to learn from everyone, across different levels of your team. Each training session that I have been a part of, has played a role in molding me as a person and helped me immensely to imbibe the tools of the trade contributing to my growth as a professional. I strongly believe in the potential of human interactions and that nothing can substitute the human experience. Not much has changed in all these years, I valued the advice of seasoned professionals and I am still more than keen to learn the new things happening in our industry, to understand the novel ways in which the profession is growing and evolving for the new kids on the

Hospitality|matters block. I got bitten by the luxury bug, when I had my first stint at a luxury hotel in Mumbai. While working for a luxury brand you service the crème de la crème of every field. These individuals usually have reached at the pinnacle in their respective fields and their success is usually accredited to being impeccable at what they do. Being around such people inspired me to follow suit and be a part of the league. Another exciting aspect of servicing the guests at luxury hotels is that they acknowledge and appreciate quality service. BFW: When you dine in a restaurant, what else do you look at besides the menu? And what are the most challenging issues you are facing on your current job? JS: Being from the Hospitality industry, I tend to look at a restaurant from a holistic perspective. I am very observant of a restaurant that I choose to dine in, from the concept, to the type of guests and their behavior, as well as the general attitude of the staff. Obviously the food remains the deciding factor. Amritsar is a Tier II city and there are new practices being adopted every day, the biggest challenge is to keep ourselves updated with the changes in the industry, to be present across various mediums through which the prospective customer chose to get in touch with us. In the present age of information, the young decision makers look for the best option amongst a plethora of easily accessible choices, keeping up to the changes that have happened over time is a constant work in progress. BFW: What is the best compliment you’ve ever received? What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses? JS: I can’t really single out instances but every time a guest compliments the hotel or services, it’s a matter of pride for me. The recognition for our team work and the efforts we put in

the best for our guests is always a matter of utmost pride. Over time, I have realized that the most satisfying feeling is of being able to mentor the young people and enrich their minds with years of learning in my experience as a hotelier. My strength lies in my humility and self-awareness; I am realistic enough to understand my weaknesses. BFW: What is the single best quality your employees can possess? And what do your employees expect from you? and at work, what puts a smile on your face? JS: As I said earlier, the attitude is of utmost importance, as far as this profession is concerned. What’s needed is, a genuine willingness to please the guests and serve them in the best possible way. The skillset can be learnt, but the right attitude is the foundation on which a career in service industry can truly grow. The attitude has to reflect in the objectivity of being fair towards your employees and to ensure that they are treated well, while working cohesively towards a common goal. The most awarding part of this industry lies in- customer delight! BFW: What advice would you offer to those who aspire to become a GM in the hotel industry someday? JS: To be successful, it always starts with the right basics. If you ask me, willingness to learn and continuously change aided by the values like honesty, straightforwardness can sum up to make the right mix for a promising professional. However, one must always be flexible enough to accept criticism and hone their skills to achieve more and make a niche for herself/himself.

lobby

Besides the individual, work culture of the hotel you are working in, plays a major role. Choose to be part of a group that gives you chance to grow while learning, and provides ample opportunities to prove yourself.

Naturalness – a myth or the new premium of the cosmetics sector? CUSTOMER DEMANDS BETWEEN LUXURY AND NATURALNESS Interview with Reiner Pfuhler, rheingold salon

I

n 2016, VIVANESS celebrated its 10th anniversary, impressing with 250 exhibitors as well as a large number of highlights and new additions such as the stage programme “VIVANESS on stage” and the first sponsored pavilion for young innovative companies, which were German “newcomers”.The VIVANESS Congress moved into hall 7A and, together with the BIOFACH congress programme, once again saw roughly 7,000 attend over 100 individual events. One of the visitor magnets of the VIVANESS Congress was the presentation by rheingold salon on customer demands between luxury and naturalness. We spoke to Rainer Pfuhler, a marketing expert and company spokesman for rheingold salon after the exhibition. His advice to the natural cosmetics industry is that “it should have the confidence to put itself in an even stronger and more prominent position, because psychologically it can fulfil several functions at the same time for people”. From your point of view as a market researcher, where does the journey between luxury and naturalness take cosmetics customers? They don’t have to be mutually exclusive; on the contrary – luxury is increasingly understood as naturalness today. Naturalness can also be seen as a new premium. Striving for something different and something special is what separates justifiable luxury from the unjustifiable accumulation of wealth. Physically, luxury may be superfluous – but psychologically, striving for luxury is an indispensable necessity. If modern values and trends are influencing the cosmetics industry, what are the strongest factors persuading customers to opt for

natural cosmetics? The crucial factor is that trends do not simply replace each other, but overlap, meaning they continue to have an effect even when a new one emerges. But the strongest trends that promote natural cosmetics are the trends towards authenticity and naturalness, and towards sustainability and testing. Before we talk about beauty, luxury and naturalness, what can the natural cosmetics sector learn from the findings of your psychological research generally speaking? The nature of people’s interest in the natural cosmetics sector is not purely rational. And the industry should be based on this, because to people it’s more about joy in life and pleasure than giving up things. The natural cosmetics industry should therefore have the confidence to step out what is just an “organic and alternative corner” and put itself in an even stronger and more prominent position, because psychologically it can fulfil several functions at the same time for people”. And why should natural products not be presented and portrayed in a manner that is just as modern and professional as that for classic cosmetics and care products? You began your presentation at VIVANESS 2016 with headings such as “Beauty is underestimated” and “True beauty comes from the outside”. What did you mean by these? First of all, beauty is very important to nearly all women. They speak first and foremost about inner beauty and radiance here, but at the same time, all women strongly believe that they can influence their appearance.

36 | July-August 2016 | Beauty & Fashion World

And this belief is of crucial importance – because beauty must not be underestimated. The theory is that even if you don’t believe the industry’s effect promises, you still want to use its products just in case they do work. So beauty can be created – and created from the outside. Naturalness is a customers’ ideal. You believe this ideal is a myth? Yes, naturalness is an idealised myth. In truth, almost nobody wants it. After all, what you see in the mirror as soon as you get up in the morning before you’ve combed your hair or anything is also natural. Women who wear make-up feel “naked” and not themselves without it. They want their appearance to look as if it just formed that way itself, however. They bring out their true selves by highlighting their strengths. They are looking for their own personality and their own authenticity as it were – but to appear as though they are really satisfied is actually very hard work. Which beauty trends are influencing us today? One example is the nude trend, which takes a lot of time and effort to apply and maintain. The aim here is to radiate a natural beauty, but in reality it requires special care and great effort. With regard to beauty, there is continues to be an emphasis on enjoyment, feeling good, taking time for oneself and taking care of oneself, and this emphasis will get stronger. Which trends are influencing the demand for natural cosmetics? Current beauty trends are being influenced by general social values more than anything else. The trend towards individualisation and

distinguishing oneself remains strong and has led to an unexpected amount of creation mania. The trend towards testing and moralisation in Germany is also placing greater emphasis on sustainability. Finally, we are living in a culture of exhaustion, which creates a desire for reserves, an ability to let go and dedication. And natural cosmetics can play a crucial role here too. Natural cosmetics and the nude look are characteristics of a desire for authenticity. Which overriding trends is this connected to? People are looking for a new way to orient themselves – away from individualisation and the obsession with self-distinguishing. This has created the desire for naturalness and authenticity, which appears diametrically opposed to the creation mania – but it simply takes them an unbelievably long time to make themselves look completely natural! Basically, values like morality and humanity suddenly became more important in society after 9/11. These values have become more and more significant since then. The understanding of what luxury is is changing as well. During the 90s, luxury was primarily looked at in terms of feasibility mania, even when it came to appearance. Is naturalness the premium today? First of all, luxury means something different to every individual. We should never forget that when asking such a question. The understanding of what luxury is has been in transition since the 90s. That is down to the changes in society I mentioned before. In keeping with the “search for values”, all-natural products, i.e. products that contain pure ingredients, have no harmful effects and ideally are sustainable as

Beauty & Fashion World | July-August 2016 | 37

well, are now being focused on in the cosmetics industry. Do different interpretations of naturalness exist as well? Of course... It can refer to the testing and purity of ingredients, but it can also refer to dealing with the environment properly and in a natural manner. Sustainability is a keyword, but our desire for simplification plays a role here too. And last but not least, there is the “science of nature”, i.e. the endeavour to distinguish natural substances and the power of nature, and make these appear even more different. That’s how powerful nature can be.

who look after themselves and look good. The trends apply to men as well. And our current study for the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW) has shown that young people now invest far more in their appearance than they used to. According to our study, creating an attractive exterior is extremely important to young people. And that applies to boys and young men in particular. Thank you very much for the interview! Submit topics for the 2017 VIVANESS Congress today! Ideas are welcome from the middle of August 2016 onwards: Industry

You always speak about women’s wishes in your answers. Do men not have the same wishes? Care products for men are really popular. We are talking about a market of approx. Tips to Practice Yoga at Home

D

aily yoga practice at home can help you stay healthy, more productive, calm and happy all day. Besides, these benefits are not just for you to enjoy. Doing these practices at home will not only keep you happy but your family members too will be able to feel the positive energy and happiness around. What’s more, you get a chance to practice them right in the comfort of your home, any time you wish. Once you have learned yoga techniques properly from a Art of Living Yoga teacher, and are comfortable, you can start practicing them on your own. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you prepare yourself for a fun yoga practice at home. 1: Choose a convenient time Practicing yoga in the morning is generally considered to be the best as it keeps energy levels high during the day. Yet, if it doesn’t happen, don’t let it be an excuse to skip your practice. You may choose a time slot which seems most convenient. It could be late mornings, before lunch, or evenings. Yoga at these times can also be a good way to refresh the mind and release stress collected during the day. 2: Choose a comfortable place It would be best to have a small, private room in your house for daily yoga practice. Over time, your practices will create positive vibrations in the room, providing healing, strength and comfort to you and others at home. However, in case it is not possible, you may choose a quiet space anywhere at home, which is large enough to roll out your yoga mat and where you know you are not likely to be disturbed for a while. All you need to ensure is that your yoga space is clean, well-ventilated,

and away from furniture or sharp objects (learn more about a yogis home). 3: Practice on a relatively empty stomach Yoga postures are always best practiced on a light or empty stomach. You can practice yoga poses and meditate about 2-3 hours after your meal. 4: Keep your yoga wear simple Go for loose, comfortable clothing – you wouldn’t want tight bodyhugging outfits coming in the way of doing some wide stretches! Also, keep aside any excessive jewelry that you are wearing and avoid heavy makeup. 5: Warm up before doing intense yoga postures This is an absolute must, else you may be at risk of straining your muscles. Start by warming up your body and do a few body stretches to bring flexibility, before moving on to more intense yoga postures. 6: It is your own body; be gentle on it Respect your body and do yoga poses gently with a smile. Doing them increasingly fast or going beyond what your body can take will not bring faster results. It will only make the practice more difficult and painful. 7: Be consistent It is very important to be regular with your yoga practice – make it a part of your daily schedule (as mentioned above, find a time slot where you can comfortably fit yoga in) and then it would be easier to make it a habit. Krishan Verma, senior Art of Living Yoga teacher says, "Twenty minutes of daily yoga practice is more likely to show positive results sooner than two hours of occasional practice."

8: Make yoga time as ‘family fun time’ When you practice alone, it might get boring after a while or you may simply become lazy. Try doing it with family or friends and see the difference! Practicing yoga at home can be a great way for a family gettogether. Learn more about how you can enrich your family time with yoga. 9: Include a variety of yoga techniques Practice a variety of yoga poses and breathing techniques, or if you are crunched for time, you may fix a set of practices to be done daily and then treat your body with the complete package on a Sunday! Also, be sure to end your yoga pose practice with Yoga Nidra. Remember that yoga practice does not only include yoga postures. Our home yoga sessions should also

make room for other techniques such as pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, and Sudarshan Kriya (if you have done the Happiness Program). Yoga practice helps develop the body and mind bringing a lot of health benefits yet is not a substitute for medicine. It is important to learn and practice yoga techniques under the supervision of a trained Art of Living Yoga teacher. In case of any medical condition, practice yoga techniques after consulting a doctor and a Art of Living Yoga teacher. Find a Art of Living Yoga program at an Art of Living Center near you. beauty|secrets Here are brilliant face care tips to get that glow you've always wanted. Browse through our beauty secrets, tackle your skincare issues and follow our tricks regularly to get beautiful skin naturally. Excited, happy or stressed, it’s your face that gives you away. So we’ve rounded up expert tips on daily skin care, keeping blemishes at bay and enhancing your natural beauty. Whether you have time for intensive skin care or not, pamper yourself by acing the basics. Why God, why? Is flawless skin just too much to ask for? A late night leads to dark circles in the morning. Got an upcoming party? Oh wait, I spy a zit. Yes yes, we are well aware of the basic CTM technique… Cleanser-Toner-Moisturizer. We try every new face wash, sunscreen, anti-ageing cream that hits the market. If dry skin and dead skin, oily skin and patchy skin weren’t enough - you now have combination skin! And we are ever so willing to try

anything under the sun to get beautiful skin. But it is not an overnight miracle. Lucky for you, we make face-care easy.

10 Dos and Don’ts for Beautiful Skin 1. The Golden Rule Do: Make sure you always (and we mean always) remove your makeup before hitting the sheets. The skin needs to breathe overnight. And makeup prevents that, as leaving it on overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and/or blackheads. Don’t possess a makeup remover? Just put some olive oil on a cotton pad and gently massage the oil onto your face to get rid of the makeup and dirt. Don’t: Forget that exfoliation is indispensable. At least once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin to remove the layers of dead skin, sure

to leave you with a more healthy glow and brighter skin. You can also apply a paste of walnut in powder form with yogurt to exfoliate your skin, as the antioxidants present in walnuts help remove dirt and promote radiant skin. face-care-tips-beautiful-skin-2 2. Sun and Skin Do: Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Since a lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems, you have to protect your skin from the sun. Make sure the label reads ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘nonacnegenic’ so that the product does not tend to block pores. Don’t: Skip the sunscreen, whether it's cloudy or cold outside (no excuses). If you’re heading to a beach or around reflective surfaces like snow or ice, lather your skin up with some more sunscreen with SPF of at least 30.

3. You are What You Eat Do: Keep a note of what you put on your plate. Eat fresh fruits, greens, sufficient protein and vitamins. A diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin. Consider a low-sugar diet, which can keep insulin levels down, allowing cells to maintain a healthy balance. "Don’t: Eat spicy and fermented foods, salt, citrus fruits, fried food. Instead favour blander foods such as rice, oatmeal and applesauce”, advises American author and Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad, in The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies. 4. Sweat It Out! Do: Exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after working out. Racing against time? Just take a brisk walk around the block. Don’t: Skip skincare before and after a workout. Apply a toner to help minimize oil production before heading out. Exfoliate after, and then apply shea butter or olive oil to moisturize the skin. 5. Beauty Sleep Do: Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you - it sags and you get bags. So don’t risk it. You can also apply honey on your face twice or thrice a week to naturally soothe and heal your skin. “Don’t: Forget to wash and moisturize your face before going to bed”, recommends Dr. Rahul Nagar, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. “For dry skin, use milder cleansers that are free from alcohol. Apply lots of moisturizer, and avoid hot water as it dries out the skin excessively.” 6. H2O to The Rescue Do: Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eats fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry, grapefruit and cantaloupe.

beauty|secrets Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad recommends to “drink water from a blue coloured bottle”, since it has a cooling effect. Don’t: Ignore rose water. It helps prevent and reduce eye puffiness in the morning, maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates your skin if you spritz it on during the day.

9. Spa Day Everyday? Do: Have a regular skin care regimen. “For dry skin, use a fresh cherry mask. Apply the pulp of fresh cherries on your face before going to bed. Leave for 15 minutes and wash with lukewarm water”, adds American author Vasant Lad. Don’t: Forget to pamper yourself.

7. Goodbye Acne “Do: Wash your face with warm water, three times a day, and gently massage your face in circular motions, ensuring that the cleanser contains alpha hydroxyl acid or beta hydroxyl acid. Face packs that contain multani mitti (fuller’s earth) work really well too. After cleansing, pat dry and apply a lotion which contains benzoyl peroxide”, suggests Dr. Zaheer Ahmed, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. Benzoyl peroxide appears to be effective due to its antibacterial actions.

A gentle facial massage with oils could work wonders. Depending on your skin type, choose oils from mustard, coconut, almond or Kumkadi as they are excellent nourishing agents which help to get glowing skin. Better still – switch on some soothing instrumental music. After 20 minutes, what do you have? Beautiful skin and a relaxed you.

Don’t: Pop pimples because it can lead to more swelling, redness, and even scarring. Feel a pimple is on its way? Just clean the area with rose water, and place a chilled green tea bag for 10 minutes. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose. 8. Go Back to Your Roots Do: Use Ayurvedic scrubs to nourish the skin, and help it breathe better. Luckily for you, everything you need is already in your kitchen. 2 tbsp chickpea flour, ½ tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of camphor and sandalwood with some rose water/milk/water is your perfect skincare pack. Yes, the secrets of beauty lies in ancient Ayurveda. Don’t: Neglect the basics. Make Sudarshan Kriya your beauty mantra. Yes, it’s that easy. Just breathing right could rid you of spots and pimples. Nidhi Gureja, Art of Living, says “Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique which incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath that harmonize the body, mind and emotions. This helps releasing accumulated stresses, and each individual’s experience is different.” 44 | July-August 2016 | Beauty & Fashion World

10. Healthy Habits Do: Take out time for yourself, and try to avoid stress as much as possible. Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you tend to break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, making the skin more oily. Practice stress management techniques like breathing exercises, yoga and meditation. The more you meditate, the more you radiate. Don’t: Neglect your jawline and facial muscles. For just 5 minutes a day, perform a few facial exercises. You can jut out your lower lip in such a way that wrinkles are created on the chin, then lower your chin to your chest. Another exercise that works wonders is to look up towards the ceiling and pout. It stretches out the muscles making the skin more firm. “18 till I die”, why not? You’re dressed to perfection, yet you need something to complete the look. Your smile! While we spend so much time and energy on honing our bodies and looks, we forget to express our inner joy and happiness. “Keeping a smile on your face will help maintain the tone of your facial muscles and skin. People may say you look 10 years younger than you are!”, adds the Ayurvedic physician, Vasant Lad.

Anti Ageing Hair and how to treat them !

Y

ou may already be looking for anti-aging solutions for your skin, but have you thought about your hair? It, too, goes through changes that may require you to treat it differently as you get older. Here’s how best to deal with the top three culprits. Culprit: Gray hair. Since it’s visible, this is the most obvious sign of aging hair. Some people start sprouting grays in their 20’s while others may not turn gray until much later. Gray hair occurs when follicles no longer produce any melanin (color). Nobody knows for sure why hair stops producing melanin and unfortunately there is no way to prevent it. Treatment: Well, you can choose to love your grays. Or if

you’re not quite ready for them, you can dye them. Root coloring kits provide small applicators to spot treat gray areas (like your hairline). If you have grays all over, you’ll want a permanent dye. Culprit: Weakness. As hair ages, it also becomes weaker, making it more prone to breakage and damage. Treatment: Minimize excessive heat styling and other damaging processes like coloring, straightening, relaxing, and perming. Be sure to condition and get regular trims to cut off damaged areas. You should also consider using hair care products with silicone. Silicone is a superstar ingredient in hair care – it

50 | July-August 2016 | Beauty & Fashion World

provides shine, smoothness and may even enhance strength. Silicone coats the hair shaft to help protect the hair from damage and maintain an optimal moisture level. If you’re worried about silcone weighing down your strands, look for cyclomethicone; it’s light and won’t make hair feel heavy! Culprit: Thinness. Individual strands become thinner resulting in hair that feels finer all over. Treatment: While there isn’t much you can do to permanently make hair thicker, there are some temporary fixes. Look for products that contain polymers, which can help add volume and some temporary bulk to the strands. Volumizing mousses and sprays are the most effective at providing light hold and oomph. Also, silicone (there it is again!) can coat the hair, making it feel thicker and less brittle. Again, look for lightweight silicones like cyclomethicone that won’t weigh hair down. Keep hair well conditioned and remember that silicone isn’t just for shine; it can actually enhance hair strength and flexibility, keeping hair looking and feeling younger!

S

o the scorching heat the one to blame for your tired-looking skin? Founder and Director at GAIA, one of India’s fastest growing health and nutrition brand, Dolly Kumar shares 4 best foods that would help regain that healthy glow to your skin. Come summer and most of us are running indoors to stay away from the harsh heat. From dehydration to low energy to damaged skin, the harsh heat seems to completely drain us all out. It is times like these which require us to pay extra attention to our skin, hair and body which tends to look drier, duller and

damaged than ever. Besides, following a strict beauty regime, eating a balanced diet is of utmost importance since skin is our largest organ and it is also the first to show nutrient deficiency. One should indulge in hydrating, raw and high in fibre foods that not only help your insides cool down but also, help flush out toxins easily. Get that healthy glow inside out this season by trying these summer beauty foods: 1. A miracle food for those who suffer with skin and hair problems due to internal heating of the body, Neem capsules is a supplement that

Further on, Olive oil comes with the added goodness of Vitamin E and A which hydrates, maintains elasticity and softness of the skin. In addition, the catechins found in Green tea are anti-bacterial agents that fight against acne-causing bacteria. For getting rid of acne, apply freshly brewed green tea and water on the affected area, allow it to sit for 10 minutes and rinse off. Follow this routine twice a week for results. 4. A healthy sweetener, one will be surprised to hear the unique skin and hair benefits pure honey has to offer. Loaded with nutrients, antioxidants and healing compounds, honey is a natural humectant that helps draw moisture from the air into the skin and ensures it leaves you with soft, supple, long-lasting hydrated skin. Honey is also a wonderful ingredient to treating and preventing acne. Dab honey on acne-prone areas before sleeping and wake up to clearer looking skin. Who knew honey makes for a great hair conditioner also? The enzymes and nutrients found in pure honey shine up your hair without weighing it down. To get back that lost lustre you crave, mix coconut oil with honey, apply on damp hair and rinse it off within 3-4 minutes. The Best Ways to Your Hair Care E

xperts say harsh winter weather and a change in temperatures can be hair's No. 1 enemy. Here's why -- and what to do.

From hat hair to static electricity, split ends to dry frizz, when winter weather hits, a bad hair day can last an entire season. In fact, even if you live in a moderate climate, experts say you're still susceptible to hair-raising changes as the seasons pass. "The environment can have some of the most damaging effects on hair in both summer and winter, but in winter it's often worse because people generally don't take as many precautions to protect their hair," says celebrity stylist Nick Chavez, owner of the Nick Chavez Beverly Hills Salon and a QVC hair care expert. Sun exposure (which can be as intense on a ski slope as it is on a beach) combined with a blustery winter wind (which can snarl hair) as well as snow, rain, and icy cold (which makes hair brittle and dry) can all come together to create some pretty bad winter hair days, winter is still your hair's enemy. The reason is indoor heating, which experts say can be something akin to spending an entire afternoon under a hair dryer! The good news: No matter what's causing your winter hair woes, you can take both protective and replenishing steps. At the top of the list for most stylists: regular use of a thick, rich, moisturizing conditioner with a few key ingredients. If you are blessed with thick or curly African-American hair, or ultra thick, heavy Asian hair, then you need a thick, heavy conditioning hair pack -- a deep treatment you leave on for about a half-hour, once or twice a week. But because these hair types generally hold oil at the roots -- one reason the rest of the hair can seem so ultra dry -- it's especially important not to condition the area closest to the scalp. "You should always apply product beginning 2 inches away from the scalp and pull it through the hair to the ends. If your hair is very fine, thin, and flyaway, Harris says avoid the conditioning pack -- it's just too heavy even for severely

damaged hair. Instead, he says, use a regular conditioner every time you wash your hair, supplemented with a light conditioning leave-in spray. "But it has to be very light or it will weigh down fine hair and make it flat and limp. We suggests the new "dry oil" sprays. These mostlysilicone based products go on dry so they don't weight hair down, but still offer a layer of protection against the elements. Hair experts suggest supplementing your storebought products with all-natural treatments of vegetable oil. The experts choice is safflower and olive oil. In either case, they say simply put a few drops of the oil in the palm of your hand, rub until skin "glistens," then starting at the bottom and working upwards, run your fingers through your hair. "You can do this after you dry your hair, or between washings -- when you come in from the cold or anytime your hair looks very dry -- it really works Another tip: Every time you put on hand cream, touch the ends of your hair and scrunch to help deposit a bit more moisture where it's needed most. Static Cling and Other Hair Styling Snafus As anyone who's ever tried to pull socks out of a clothes dryer can tell you, static electricity can be a powerful force. But sticky socks are the least of your problems when compared with what static can do to your hair. The remedy is the same one you use on your laundry: a fabric softening dryer sheet like Bounce! "Just rub it lightly on your hair and it will remove the static. Slightly more conventional is using a natural boar bristle hairbrush with a wooden handle, which Harris says can also reduce static. When it comes to styling winter hair, a few quick product switches may be all you need to combat most problems. For Harris, it starts with substituting a hair cream for your usual styling gel. Styling creams now trump the gel market because they add moisture to the hair, make it

52 | July-August 2016 | Beauty & Fashion World

more pliable, and give it better elasticity so it's less likely to break -- all extremely important in winter. In fact, when choosing any winter hair styling products including holding sprays, Harris says avoid high alcohol content, which can be drying to hair. Likewise he says avoid putting fragrance directly on your hair since its alcohol content can also cause your tresses to look and feel dry and brittle. Most importantly, limit your time under a blow dryer -good advice all year round but essential in winter, he says. To do that and still effectively style your hair Harris says use a towel to gently blot about 20% of the moisture content out of our hair, then hit it with the heat, stopping the moment your hair is dry. To cut down on the proverbial "hat hair," experts say pull longer locks into a pony tail high on your head, or push short hair straight back, before putting on the hat. Pushing hair against the way your style should fall, will help it spring out with bounce once the hat is removed. Shampoos and Color Treatments: Your Best Choice for Hair Care While conditioning and styling products may help hold your style, celebrity and fashion stylist Jamal Hammadi says choosing the right shampoo may net you perhaps the biggest winter hair payoff.
