W
ith 90,000 titles every year, the publishing industry in India generates more business and jobs than Bollywood, former Union Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari has said.
Speaking at the launch of senior journalist Dilip Bobb's "The Best of TEL" here, the Congress leader said that the Indian publishing industry was poised to become the world's largest.Availability of highly skilled technical manpower and a rapidly growing book market have greatly contributed to the upturn in the publishing industry. "The Best of TEL" is a collection of essays by eminent writers from diverse fields first published in the magazine "The Equator Line". Bobb has edited the volume published by Palimpsest. "He has carefully gone through every essay, discovered its subtext and put it in perspective," Palimpsest CEO Bhaskar Roy said. Among the contributors to the volume are eminent psychiatrist Sanjay Chugh, sociologist Shiv Visvanathan, Swiss writer Robert Hutchison, Australian film critic John W.Hood, former Doordarshan news anchor Neethi Ravindran, British scholar Danielle Hall and veteran columnist Sunanda K. Datta-Ray. Pointing to the efforts made by "The Equator Line" to break free from today's mainstream media, Bobb, in his introduction to the volume said, "The core of the magazine is what people call narrative journalism" in 4 | may-june 2015 | printingreview
contrast to "cacophonic and sensationalized" media dominated by 24x7 television. "If there is one constant in a rapidly changing world of communication, it is this: the human need for thought-provoking journalism will always command a premium," he added. 3D printers are emerging as a key growing printing technology in global landscape. Q.I. Press Controls Active for Book Printing Market
Q
.I. Press Controls is active for the book printing market! During Printpack India 2015, the organisation got in serious contact with the people of Pressline, who just introduced a new range of web-offset machines for the production of books: the Bookline Series. Pressline decided to invest in a first installation of the mRC-3D on one of their new book printing presses. When the solution works satisfactorily, Q.I. Press Controls gets the opportunity for more business on other book printing presses of this press manufacturer. Printpack India 2015 was held at the India Expo Centre in Greater Noida, India from the 11th to the 15th of February. The exhibition was promoted on a very large scale by organiser IPAMA to attract a maximum number of visitors. The exhibition was well planned and the arrangements were at par with world class. All the present press manufactures had presented themselves in a very large scale by displaying their product portfolio. Q.I. Press Controls had a nicely located and well arranged booth that attracted lots of attention. Mr. Vijay Pandya, managing director of Q.I. Press Controls India, states: “We have received good inquiries from book printers as from small newspaper printers. Automation solutions like ours are in demand.” Pressline India was located opposite to the booth of Q.I. Press Controls. Q.I. Press Controls was already in touch with the company for a while, talking about automatic registration solutions. At the exhibition, the two companies started talking more serious. Not a long time after the exhibition, Pressline India was
convinced by Q.I. Press Controls in investing in the mRC-3D for the Bookline Series. The order consists of 2 mRC-3D cameras for register control for one web on a press out the Pressline Bookline Series. With this system, Pressline India will achieve a consistent good printing quality and a proper waste reduction during production. Mr. Pandya: “Our long time relation with Pressline India and our good reference installations in the marked lead to the decision in favour of our registration control system mRC-3D.” Pressline expects a continuation of the good relation and a good local support in installing and maintaining the cameras. With this order, Q.I. Press Controls is strengthening its position in a new market. The installation at Pressline India will establish Q.I. Press Controls in the book printing market for future business. Q.I. Press Controls is positive about the future and wants to keep the good relation with Pressline India. Mr. Pandya concludes: “With this project, we are committed to serve our end user and press manufacturer with our print automation solutions for the weboffset market. We are strengthening our position in a growing book printing market and are looking forward to continue this relationship with Pressline.” About Pressline India Ltd.: Pressline India is a premier weboffset printing machinery manufacturing company that offers state-ofthe-art web offset machines, incorporating highest level of engineering for the Newspaper Industry worldwide. Al-Qasswa new agent for QIPC – EAE in Saudi Arabia
A
l-Qasswa Development Est. has been named as the new agent for Q.I. Press Controls and EAE in Saudi Arabia. This appointment comes as no surprise, since Al-Qasswa continues to build on its successes wherever the printing industry is concerned. Al-Qasswa is a serious player in the Saudi printing world and over the years has acquired experience with several generations of top management. QIPC – EAE has complete confidence in Al-Qasswa. Erwin van Rossem, Area Sales Manager for Q.I. Press Controls, explains that developments are currently afoot in Saudi Arabia which involve the upgrade of printing presses. Not only will these developments lead to significant improvements in product quality, but considerable savings too. QIPC – EAE needed a local partner to respond to these latest trends. AlQasswa's managing director, Toufic Hachicho, reports that the organisations came into contact with each other via a mutual business partner. After a close assessment of the various candidates, QIPC - EAE decided to add Al-Qasswa to its network of agents. The new partnership was officially announced by QIPC - EAE and Al-Qasswa at Gulf Print & Pack 2015 in Dubai. “Due to the successes achieved over the years by Al-Qasswa, there was really no other choice than to include this agent in our network,” explained Erwin van Rossem. Toufic Hachicho sees the partner-
ship with QIPC – EAE as a valuable addition to Al-Qasswa's portfolio. “In my view, QIPC – EAE is a genuine partner with products that are perfectly matched to our own markets," he explains. "Up to now, we've had unstinting support from them in every aspect of the work involved. We expect this support will continue in all matters of collaboration in the future.” Al-Qasswa believes in the values of QIPC – EAE, which makes the organisation incomparable with some other manufacturers. “QIPC – EAE hold the reliability of the systems which provide our customers with added value in high esteem,” adds Toufic Hachicho. AlQasswa will market QIPC – EAE products in Saudi Arabia and sell them as the leading solutions for future success. QIPC – EAE has every confidence that they will succeed in this. About Q.I. ustomer endorsement highlights Vpak production benefits. Production efficiency, quality advantages, shorter run-lengths and flexible repeats were among the hot topics at a packaging seminar hosted by Goss International in Mexico City recently. More than twenty delegates from package printing and converting companies throughout Mexico traveled to the event last month, which was focused on the unique opportunities of Vpak web offset production.
testimonial given by Marcos Jordão, director of operations for Videplast Brazil, in which he explained his company's recent decision to order a Sunday Vpak 500 press. Jordão said print quality and production flexibility were key motivators for the investment. As well as the technical aspects of the Vpak design, Goss representatives provided a detailed overview of cost models, which were particularly well-received according to Clavijo: "You could see the delegates sit up and take note when we illustrated the potential cost benefits of Vpak technology using data from real production models," he explains. To round off the seminar, Goss discussed consultancy services and financing options available. Representatives from QuadTech, ESI and Flint Group also presented during the event, describing how their products can enhance Vpak capabilities and performance.
In addition to hosting localized conferences and seminars, Goss International regularly holds live demonstrations on a Vpak 500 press system, with EB and UV curing and flexo coating, in its Packaging Technology Center at company headquarters in Durham, (NH), USA.
"From the flood of questions during the relaxed downtime at the end, it was clear the information presented had captured many imaginations," concludes Clavijo.

With a high level of automation, the eight-unit, two-web configuration from Goss International has been devised specifically to increase output and press uptime. "At Creel we are committed to continually advancing our technology in order to ensure we can anticipate our customers' emerging requirements," comments Allan G. Creel, President of Creel Printing. "Given the changing world of print and digital media, this not only means we need to expand our product capabilities, we also have to ensure we can do it faster and more efficiently. Obviously, with an enviable reputation for high-quality print, there can be no compromise in our production standards. These have been the guiding principles behind this decision to invest with Goss." At 57 inches (1450 mm), the new press system for Creel Printing features the widest web of any Sunday 2000 model, providing 50 percent more paging capacity. The specification includes Goss Autoplate automatic plate changing for all eight units and Goss Omnicon press controls with color control. The choice of two Goss pinless

New Goss Magnum Compact press enters final phase of testing at Staten Island
U
nique configuration for first Magnum Compact press in the US Low-height design crucial to project success With the press towers clearing the overhead by no more than an inch, the first Magnum Compact press system in the United States has been installed snugly and initial tests on its six 2 x 1 units completed. The press is currently undergoing commissioning tests and shadow production before moving into full production this month.
press uptime. Plates that have been removed may be reused for repeat production of shorter run jobs, further extending the value proposition of the press. The design of the Magnum Compact system gives the towers a lower profile without compromising print quality or performance. Easy access to blankets, rubber rollers and ink ducts enabled by the single-level towers facilitates and accelerates maintenance. Together with simplified operation and run-length flexibility, these features mean that the Magnum Compact design enables the Staten Island Advance to offer a wide range of products competitively and with good margins. The ability to print cost-effective runs as short as 500 - 1,000 copies provides printers not only with an alternative to digital print, but an economical way of handling runs up to 250,000 copies, giving unparalleled production flexibility and a powerful competitive advantage. The Staten Island Advance was established in 1886 and is part of Advance Publishing's family of newspapers that comprises dozens of titles across the United States. A diversified communications group, Advance Publishing has media interests that encompass cable television, leading media internet sites, business journals and magazines as well as newspapers.
The new press for Advance Publishing of Staten Island, USA, complements the company's existing double-width press line and offers backup to the production of the daily Staten Island Advance while adding capacity for other contract newspaper, insert and commercial work. Even at just 7'2" (2.2m) tall, the installation of the Magnum Compact towers was a high-precision operation. In what is possibly a unique configuration, web slots were cut into the ceiling to accommodate turner bars for delivering the web to a folder on the floor above. Extra web slots were also cut to feed an additional, future folder which has been allowed for in the configuration. An engineering achievement in itself, the installation was completed with only very minor modifications to the building. Among the Magnum Compact features attractive to Staten Island Advance was the Goss Autoplate technology that delivers fast makereadies and enables successive jobs to be run with complete plate changes within two minutes. This is accomplished with minimum waste and contributes to maximum 22 | may-june 2015 | printingreview

3D PRINTING ISN’T ROCKET SCIENCE. OR IS IT? Rocket Manufacturer United Launch Alliance Will 3D Print Flight-Ready Rocket Components. ULA Has Vision to Reduce Launch Vehicle Cost by 50 Percent with Help of 3D Printing. 3D printing helped consolidate part count from 140 to 16 parts for one complex assembly, lowering costs and risk Do you think 3D printers are just a new fad for hobbyists or making knickknacks? Or limited to making prototypes? Don't tell that to rocket manufacturer United Launch Alliance (ULA). Making launch vehicles for NASA, the Air Force and commercial satellites, ULA knows 3D printing is a serious tool that has been around more than 25 years and is a growing production process. And ULA knows a thing or two about critical applications. On the lower-end, its rockets cost a cool $165 million. And they must propel into space billion-dollar satellites weighing more than 60,000 pounds. "It's about as demanding an application as you can get," says Rich Garrity, VP and General Manager Vertical Solutions Unit for Additive Manufacturing system maker Stratasys Ltd. (Nasdaq:SSYS). "Rockets must endure pressure, G-force, speed, vibration, heat, and extreme cold." United Launch Alliance is the premier launch services company in the U.S., and with its heritage systems - Atlas and Delta - it has supported America's presence in space for more than 50 years. Like other leading edge manufacturers using 3D printing, ULA progressed from prototyping to tooling and then to flight hardware production. After acquiring two Fortus 900mc 3D Production Systems from Stratasys, ULA began the process of updating the Environmental Control System (ECS) duct on the Atlas V, which will launch with the new 3D component in 2016. The ECS duct is critical to the countdown sequence of a launch, delivering nitrogen to sensitive electronic components within the rocket booster. The previous design for the ECS duct assembly contained 140 parts, but by modifying the design using FDM 3D Printing Technology, ULA consolidated the number of parts to only 16. This significantly reduces installation time and results in a 57 percent part-cost reduction. Watch the video. ULA selected ULTEM 9085 FDM thermoplastic material to produce durable, high-performance end-use parts. "ULTEM 9085 has great strength properties over a wide temperature range," said Greg Arend, Program Manager for Additive Manufacturing at ULA. "We have done testing to show that it is very capable of withstanding temperatures from cryogenic all the way up to extreme heat. And it's tough enough to handle the vibration and stress of lift off and flight. We're very satisfied with its performance." The Atlas V won't likely be the last launch vehicle incorporating 3D printing technology. ULA has ambitious plans to increase the quantity of 3D printed parts to over 100 on the next generation rocket. "We see somewhat of an exponential growth in the utility of 3D printing for flight applications on our current vehicles," said Arend. "And we intend to use it heavily with our Vulcan rocket." printingreview | may-june 2015 | 27

ULTEM 9085 resin provides high strength-to-weight ratio and is FST (flame, smoke, and toxicity) compliant for aircraft interior applications. This enables Airbus to manufacture strong, lighter weight parts while substantially reducing production time and manufacturing costs. "We are delighted that Stratasys additive manufacturing solutions are being adopted by Airbus for its flagship A350 XWB aircraft. Both companies share a vision of applying innovative technologies to design and manufacturing to create game-changing benefits," said Dan Yalon, Executive Vice President, Business Development, Marketing & Vertical Solutions for Stratasys. "Our additive manufacturing solutions can produce complex parts ondemand, ensuring on time delivery while streamlining supply chains. Additive manufacturing also greatly improves the buy-to-fly ratio as significantly less material is wasted than with conventional manufacturing methods. Stratasys is looking forward to bringing these and other advantages to its collaboration with Airbus and to being part of Airbus' Factory of the Future initiative." Leading companies in a variety of industries, from aerospace and automotive to consumer goods and medical, are partnering with Stratasys to adopt additive manufacturing strategies. A transformative alternative to conventional manufacturing methods, Stratasys additive manufacturing enables original and replacement parts to be digitally produced at the best suited locations, reducing both material waste and inventory requirements. By adopting additive manufacturing throughout the product lifecycle, companies can therefore lower operational costs, accelerate time to market, decentralize production, and add new innovative product functionality. 28 | may-june 2015 | printingreview

The development of occupational health and safety as it exists today is – her key finding – the result of a cooperative intertwining process between numerous actors and influences from unions, associations, science, politics and society with one decisive criterion: companies from the iron and steel industry played a successful and influential role here and thereby proved that occupational health and safety and the continued health of employees are also matters close to their heart.

Dornscheidt (CEO at Messe Düsseldorf) and Prof. Dr. Anja Steinbeck (Principal of Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf) as part of a festive event on 1 June at Düsseldorf’s Industrieclub. In her prize-winning work Kleinöder explores the falling number of works accidents in the German iron and steel industry since the 1920s and 30s and examines the causes of this trend. Because – as Nina Kleinöder firmly believes – this trend is not only due to technology and automation or rising occupational safety legislation. The background is considerably more complex. It is from this perspective that Dr. Kleinöder approaches the matter:

KBA Rapida 106 for Japanese printing company High-speed sheetfed offset at Joemay in Niigata
R
apida 106 with four printing units went live at printing house Joemay in Niigata, on the west coast of Japan, only three weeks after it was delivered.
The four-colour press for the Japanese market is somewhat of a novelty for KBA as the presses going to Japan are usually longer. Nevertheless, the world’s makeready champion won over all at Joemay with its fast job change and the Rapida 106 outstanding performance of up to 20,000sph. Founded in 1995, the family-run firm with approx. 70 employees focuses primarily on commercial printing. However, Joemay doesn’t think of itself solely as a printing company, but more a communication company given its broad service offerings ranging from campaign planning, production of contents and advertising material to PR services for customers. Along with printing catalogues, brochures, flyers an d posters, challenging packaging substrates, e.g. for Japanese chocolate, also belong to its portfolio. Given the frequent mix of small to very largesized jobs Joemay looked for a press offering the highest level of automation and the shortest makeready times. KBA was thus able to win points with its Rapida 106 makeready world champion against tough competition from Japan. The experts from Niigata were bowled over in particular by the savings in waste thanks to QualiTronic ColorControl. Further features include automatic plate change, water cooling, inking unit temperature control and the networking via LogoTronic CIPLinkX. Raised by 450mm (17.7in) the four-colour press often runs at speeds of up to 20,000sph and is currently the only high-speed press in Japan delivering this high level performance. A digital speedometer is used by owner Takeaki Kato to draw the company’s employees, customers and business partners attention to this. Further Rapida presses will installed in Japan over the coming months. 34 | may-june 2015 | printingreview

oenig & Bauer’s (KBA) two Italian subsidiaries, KBAFlexotecnica and KBA-Italia, manned a stand in hall 2 (stand nr. H11/K20) at Converflex from 19 to 23 May at Fiera Milano, Milan. They informed visitors about innovative flexo and offset solutions for highquality packaging production. In addition, KBA-MetalPrint in Stuttgart presented its KBA-CleanAir industrial air-purification systems, which are particularly of great interest to packaging companies in terms of energy and environmental issues. As one of the world’s leading press manufacturers, KBA offers an exceptionally broad product spectrum for the growing packaging printing market and is a trendsetter in folding carton printing. Its portfolio includes B2, medium and large-format sheetfed offset presses for board, decorating and coating systems for metal, flexo web presses for flexible packaging, screen and digital presses for glass and plastic hollow containers, digital coding systems for packaging lines
A highlight at the KBA stand is a printing unit belonging to the popular EVO XD central-cylinder flexo press. The printing deck, which was newly developed recently, features a high level of automation (e.g. A.I.F. auto impression setting system, A.R.F. automatic register control) and the redesigned bridge dryer leads to substantial energy savings. The unit on show features eight print decks and is engineered for web widths of up to 1,500mm (59in) and speeds of up to 500mpm (1,640fpm). Presses from the EVO XD series have been implemented across Europe and overseas for flexible packaging printing on plastic film, aluminium-coated or layered substrates, paper and carton, and the series is known for its excellent print quality. KBA-Flexotecnica is offering a bus shuttle to its nearby plant in Tavazzano for live press demonstrations on an eight-colour EVO XD twice a day (apart from Saturday afternoon). offset presses delivered with up to 19 printing and finishing units are currently going to packaging printers worldwide. Inline finishing with coating, metallic inks, cold foil and other applications are becoming increasingly more significant in folding carton printing. These topics will be at the centre of talks in Milan. Air-purification systems from KBACleanAir have been implemented in a raft of sectors, including the print industry, for removing aerosols, hydrocarbons or odours from exhaust air. These systems are gaining in importance due to growing environmental protection standards. In recent years the global market for packaging printing systems, which is continuing to grow slightly, was far less effected by investment reluctance than media-orientated print sectors. The Italian print market that has suffered from the country’s recession in past years is also showing signs of recovery. The Gerosa Group with production sites in several countries recently ordered a ten-colour EVO XD High Profit press from KBA-Flexotecnica for its Italian plant Flexocit in Brescia. Moreover, board printer Ruggeri in Modena installed a Rapida 106 with seven printing units, coater, two interim dryers, a further printing unit and triple delivery extension.

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has been represented in China for many years and knows customer needs for integrated and efficient solutions, enhanced service, and new applications like no other supplier. The products, geared precisely to these trends, thus generated high levels of interest among the Asian visitors. A particular highlight was the integration of digital and offset applications. The new Linoprint CV digital printing systems and the Jetmaster Dimension 250 for 4D printing were presented in China for the first time. The premiere of the four-color Speedmaster CS 92
proved a popular response to the rising demand for cost efficiency and the main print formats used in Asia. This machine has been specially developed for Asia and cuts printing plate costs by over 20 percent thanks to its new sheet format. Both the digital and offset presses were integrated via the Prinect print shop workflow. “Asia is one of the key markets for us and we were able to showcase our integrated digital and offset printing applications to a large number of visitors. We’re delighted with how the trade show went and the interest in the solutions exhibited was high, as we had expected,” says Harald Weimer, member of the Management Board responsible for sales and services at Heidelberg. With 4D printing, Heidelberg highlighted possibilities that transcend the two-dimensional printing of flat materials that has characterized the last few centuries. This opens up totally new prospects for print shops to fulfill the growing demand for personalized consumer goods and proved to be a big draw for visitors. The new Speedmaster CS 92 also met market needs, with sales of almost twenty presses. The services and consumables sector was a key feature of the Heidelberg booth alongside equipment. There were large numbers of visitors inquiring about solutions to increase machine availability and about support for complex printing applications, with the result that numerous contracts were concluded. So it comes as no surprise that every second press is already supplied with Remote Service to ensure the fastest possible service. And this figure is continuing to grow, with all presses from the Qingpu site near Shanghai being shipped with a service contract.

Growth market of digital printing – Linoprint CV and Jetmaster Dimension 250 4D printing system produce a “wow” effect Like everywhere else in the world, Chinese print shops are also harnessing the potential of digital printing. The new Linoprint CV from Heidelberg with white/coating function offers users even greater flexibility for cost-effective printing of short and personalized runs. The Linoprint CV also supports a wide range of substrates. The Jetmaster Dimension 250 digital printing system has been specially developed for print service providers looking to build up new business areas. This system prints three-dimensional objects with personalized content – hence the name 4D printing. At Print China, the Jetmaster Dimension printed over 500 soccer balls with customized content and exceeded all expectations. “We’d like to build on the wow effect generated here. We have a lot of people interested in this technology and will be launching the Jetmaster Dimension on the Chinese market by the end of the year,” says Weimer. The new Gallus DCS 340 digital labeling system was also unveiled at Print China 2015. This is a joint project between Heidelberg, Gallus, and Fujifilm that shows the opportunities offered by the new partner strategy at Heidelberg. By accessing partner technologies, Heidelberg is able to meet customer needs very rapidly¬. For example, the prototype of the new digital labeling system was developed and presented to the public in less than fourteen months. Offset printing – new Speedmaster CS 92 successfully unveiled Special print formats are mainly used for production in commercial printing in Asia, and the new Speedmaster CS 92-4 is a response
to this. With its print format of 650 x 940 millimeters (25.59 x 37.01 inches), it cuts printing plate costs by 20 percent over a conventional 70 x 100 centimeter (27.56 x 39.37
inch) press. The Speedmaster CS 92 is based on the tried-and-tested platform of the Speedmaster CD 102. It is equipped with the Preset Plus Feeder and Preset Plus Delivery, Prinect Press Center Compact, and AutoPlate for fast setup as standard. The target groups are commercial and packaging printers. The Speedmaster CS 92-4 will be produced in proven Heidelberg quality at the Qingpu plant near Shanghai. Since the start in 2006, this site has supplied over 5,000 printing units or over 1,350 presses in the Speedmaster SM 52, SM 74, and CD 102 series. Four-color standard presses are produced for the small and medium formats, while up to six colors including coating unit are supplied for the 70 x 100 centimeter (27.56 x 39.37 inch) format. Heidelberg was therefore quick to respond to the increasing requirements of Asian customers. Over five percent of Chinese
production is now exported to neighboring Asian countries and this proportion is rising. CLOSE TO THE CUSTOMER China remains one of the largest single markets for Heidelberg. Four branches in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong and two offices in Chengdu and Guangzhou ensure comprehensive customer support locally. A total of over 1,000 Heidelberg employees work in China, including more than 600 in sales and service. A Print Media Center is to be opened at the Qingpu site this fall to give customers a practical overview of the Heidelberg portfolio.

Xeikon Cheetah hits the quality mark at its first North American installation at Accu-Label Label printing expert leverages market’s fastest full-color digital label press to better meet customer needs and support growth
X
eikon, an innovator in digital color printing technology, is pleased to announce the first North American installation of the Xeikon Cheetah at Accu-Label, Inc. making it the third pilot site worldwide to install this breakthrough digital label production solution. Accu-Label, located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has added Xeikon’s new press to complement its existing production platform, which includes a Xeikon 3500 that was installed last year, as well as flexographic printing solutions. Xeikon Cheetah is the most productive five-color digital label press available on the market today. It was the exceptional speed of the press (98 ft/min or 30m/min), combined with its high quality output, that convinced Accu-Label to invest in the Xeikon Cheetah. The investment will enable the company to respond to evolving client demands, expand into new markets and optimize its production processes – all while meeting the high level of quality output the company has been renowned for throughout its history. “We chose Xeikon because they really understood our business and challenges. Our experiences with their customer support, technical service and consulting services have been outstanding,” explains David Manning, Accu-Label’s founder. ”Of course, speed was a big consideration, but there was more… we are a company that has always been dedicated to providing the best quality printing and a high level of service. For us, it doesn’t matter how fast a press goes if we can’t deliver a quality product. We felt the Xeikon Cheetah gave us both speed and better quality than other digital printing technologies currently
available on the market. The Xeikon team showed us how installing the Xeikon Cheetah would help us meet the specific demands of our customers while ensuring superior quality. Having this flexibility is a fundamental market differentiator for us.” A tradition of quality Accu-Label is a family-centered business that has been dedicated to surpassing the expectations of its customers ever since it was founded 28 years ago. Over the years, the company has continuously expanded and its growth has been fueled by two things: Manning’s passion for printing and the company’s dedication to quality. Until its first Xeikon acquisition last year, the business had been 100% flexo, but Manning says, “I have always looked for more effective processes by asking ‘What’s a better way to do this?’ Last year, the answer was to add digital to our production platform with the Xeikon 3500, which is already in high demand. Today, we are building on our investment in digital with the Xeikon Cheetah.” Catie Manning, overseeing sales & marketing at Accu-Label, explains how the addition of the first digital press only one year ago changed the business. “While at first, our customers had to be educated about the capabilities of digital production, they have come to value the quality and consistency it offers. In just one year, we have had so many jobs printed digitally that the Xeikon 3500 is running at high capacity. Adding a second digital label press – the fastest on the market in its class – is vital to meeting their expectations, now and in the future. In addition, to better position the company to address our evolving customer needs, the speed and throughput of the Xeikon Cheetah will enable growth
40 | may-june 2015 | printingreview
in our customer base. This will also improve the efficiency of our flexo production fleet by dedicating it to the longer runs it is designed to produce cost-efficiently.” The digital journey The addition of digital label production capacity has meant big changes for Accu-Label and its customers. Being able to offer both high quality digital and conventional flexographic printing expands the range of solutions and services the company can offer. David Manning believes the Xeikon Cheetah press is critical to continuing that expansion. He says, “Flexo is an art form that I truly love, and I’ve been practicing this art for a long time. But nowadays, it’s not the right solution for every label project. For proofs and mock-ups as well as shorter and versioned runs, the cost, time and energy required makes it inefficient, and in many cases, unattainable. The Xeikon Cheetah, which gives us higher quality than many other digital label production solutions on the market, is the key to future-proofing our business.” David comments that one of the biggest benefits of digital is the greater level of flexibility it offers for design and prototyping. He notes, “This flexibility lets us provide better service to existing customers and offer new services to companies we have not been able to work with before. For example, we have customers who want to see many versions of their labels before they go into production. Digital label production lets you get to final designs more quickly and very cost-effectively. It enables clients to be more creative with their ideas and gives us the opportunity to help them bring that creativity to market faster. This process saves time, money and effort for the client – another key advantage of digital
label production.” Perfect match, perfect quality For Accu-Label, quality remains one of the most important considerations. David Manning says, “As we continue to evolve our business, we never lose sight of our dedication to quality. This focus on quality is what has made us successful for 28 years. Quality and consistency are critical to us and to our customers, and with our combination of flexographic printing and Xeikon digital presses, we never sacrifice either one. We hit the quality mark each and every time.” “Accu-Label is a great example of what a label manufacturer can accomplish by incorporating digital toner technology into the mix,” adds Filip Weymans, Director of Segment Marketing, Labels and Packaging at Xeikon. “And there is no better way to do that than with the Xeikon Cheetah. The Xeikon Cheetah is a groundbreaking press that represents one of the most important advancements in the digital label production market. We are gratified to see that leading label printers, such as Accu-Label, have chosen the Xeikon Cheetah to meet client needs and expand into new markets.” “With Xeikon’s support, it’s been a fantastic year. They have brought a level of understanding about our business and significant value to each conversation, while giving expert advice on how to address changing market needs. I respect and appreciate that,” Manning concludes. “When we talked about the future, it became clear that the right equipment would help us continue to build on our success. The new Xeikon Cheetah press is exactly the technology we need in order to do that.” ABOUT ACCU-LABEL, INC. Founded in 1987, Accu-Label is a

VISITOR INFLUX AND TRADE FAIR ORDERS SURPASSED EXPECTATIONS Print China a resounding success for KBA
W
ith over 200 printing units sold from all available series and a high influx of visitors to the 1,000m2 stand, Print China which ran from 7 to 12 April in Guangdong was a huge success for the KBA Group. Several KBA companies joined forces under the banner “KBA: Print Solutions for All” and the host of exhibits ranging from sheetfed and web offset, flexo, inkjet, metal, hollow container and glass decoration, and digital coding systems were met with great interest. The Chinese print pundits were surprised and blown away by the breadth and variety of print solutions bearing the KBA logo. Many only previously knew of KBA’s Rapida sheetfed offset presses which are widespread in China. Despite the country’s recent somewhat sluggish economy, the string of new orders and projects booked by the end of the trade show clearly surpassed all expectations. KBA profited from its strong footing in packaging printing. In addition, high performance presses with extensive kit and automation are becoming increasingly popular given the rise in wage costs also in China. KBA Rapidas accommodate this trend. Print Solutions for All banner hits home Claus Bolza-Schünemann, president and CEO of Koenig & Bauer, summed up his visit to the trade show: “Print China shows us that our efforts concerning our Fit@All programme are on the right track and that we will be fit and wellpositioned to move into the third century of our company’s long history in two years’ time.” Ralf Sammeck, executive vice-president for sheetfed offset presses, was
also present and added: “Along with sheetfed offset, our exhibits here demonstrate that KBA specialises in nearly everything which can be printed and finished with colour or inks using various techniques. We can therefore fulfil all of our customers’ demands.” Crowds flocked to watch live demos of a five-colour Rapida 105 with coater and a Rapida 75-4+L equipped with energy-saving and environmentally friendly LED-UV. The Rapida 105, which is based on the Rapida 106, can be found in printing companies across China and was again the most ordered press at the show. A raft of new users also snapped up the more highly automated Rapida 105 PRO, even though its official unveiling is scheduled for the end of June in Radebeul. KBA profits from shift in Chinese print market The string of orders placed during the trade show ranged from the Rapida 75, Rapida 105, Rapida 105 PRO, the high-tech Rapida 106 to the large-format Rapida 145. The second order for a Rapida 145 from internet printer Zhengzhou Shengda Color Printing Co. Ltd is an example of the shift in the Chinese print market. KBA sales director Dietmar Heyduck: “In the face of tough competition Chinese online printers are increasingly switching to large format. We are supporting this development with our automated large-format presses for fast job change, a higher level of productivity and shorter delivery times.” Walter Zehner, managing director of KBA China: “Gaining online printers as customers for our highly productive large Rapidas is a huge opportunity for us and means less staff costs for our clients, increased efficiency and greater competitiveness.” The order for two Rapida 106 with

DriveTronic SIS sidelay-free infeed and DriveTronic SPC direct platecylinder drives by Guangdong Jinguan Technology Co. Ltd. is a further example of the trend towards high tech in China. The company aims to offer packaging printing with this new highperformance technology online. Accordingly, signing the contract was celebrated officially in the presence of members of the KBA management board. Dietmar Heyduck: “The Chinese packaging market continues to grow, especially with regard to consumer packaging. The majority of the orders placed here at the trade show came from packaging printers and their demands in terms of press equipment are also rising. Longer presses with more than four or five colours, inline coating and a higher level of automation are becoming increasingly more popular. KBA is the first choice for Chinese sheetfed offset printers in the packaging segment.” Walter Zehner: “We hope that we can transfer our outstanding reputation with folding carton printers to the new flexo presses for flexible packaging soon. Many of the print experts visiting Print China were amazed by the film samples printed on presses from KBA-Flexotecnica and visitors flocked to our flexo seminar. There are also concrete projects for KBA-Flexotecnica’s EVO presses in the pipeline. The production of flexible packaging is still dominated by gravure in China, nevertheless flexo printing which is environmentally friendly and economical for small and mediumsized jobs has exceptional prospects for the future. This is also true of the printing systems from KBA-Kammann for the direct decoration of premium glass containers.

Manroland executives show support for Print China 2015
T
he ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION and the latest-generation ROLAND 700 HiPrint were rolled out with much fanfare to an enthusiastic Chinese audience at Print China 2015. Top management from the Manroland headquarters in Germany and executives in Greater China took part in the successful launch, either online or in person, underscoring the company's commitment to the Chinese market and its importance in the printing world. Innovation, creativity and efficiency can all be found in the sleek ROLAND 700 EVOLUTON and the new-generation ROLAND 700 HiPrint, and visitors to the Manroland exhibition booth during the six-day Print China 2015 couldn’t agree more; with the Manroland theme of “One touch for the future” the icing on the cake was the number of deals sealed during the event.
Mr. Kurt Herrmann, Managing Director of Manroland Greater China, talked about the concept of “One touch” and how it relates to both the ROLAND 700 HiPrint and the printers. He said the concept relates two factors - the way of printing production in the future and how to achieve sustainable profitability. Printing production in the future, Hermann said will rely heavily on highly automated technologies to tackle various challenges, including higher labor costs, stringent quality requirement and short lead time. As for sustaining profitability, all of the systematic components involved are designed to enhance the overall performance in the production process. A series of future-oriented innovations, such as the highly automated presses, Inline technologies, QuickChange, automatic color and quality control system, can help the printers achieve high quality, high efficiency and low cost. This is the
Mr. Rafael Penuela, CEO, Manroland Sheetfed GmbH, greeted visitors online and vowed during the press conference to maintain the company’s strong presence in the Greater China region. Print China 2015 comes at a time of renewed growth for Manroland, according to Dr. Peter Conrady, head of Global Sales, Manroland Sheetfed GmbH. He added that the company is the only German sheetfed offset manufacturer to consistently turn in a profit since 2012. This is due to its advanced printing technologies and continuous effort to improve on its existing products, Dr. Conrady said. The ROLAND 700 EVOLUTION is proof of this commitment, and was recently awarded the “Red Dot” Award for Production Design – considered the "Oscar" of the design industry.

future of printing, Hermann said. An impressive mapping show on the first day of Print China 2015 demonstrated the capabilities and attractive qualities of this newgeneration ROLAND 700 HiPrint. Mr. James Zhang, Regional General Manager North China, Sheetfed Division and General Manager of Sheetfed solutions for Web segment, Greater China, said the new press takes the industry into the “One touch’’ printing world. Moreover, Mr. Zhang explained in detail the “One touch” innovative features of the new press: SPL (Simultaneous Plate Loading): Blanket and impression cylinder can be washed automatically and simultaneously with the plate change. No extra time for plate changing is needed. The makeready time is significantly reduced, increasing efficiency. Regardless of
whether the press is four-color, fivecolor or more, the processes of washing and plate changing only take 4 minutes in total! InlineFoiler with Indexing: Inline foil enhancement during production – with no extra steps or preparation required – can produce various dazzling print effects. What’s more, it can reduce the consumption of the metal foil to a very large extent (up to 60%), further cutting production cost. LEC UV: Installing a LEC-UV device on the delivery can speed up the job processing, and reduce energy consumption. As for the occasional UV users, LEC UV enjoys unparalleled cost advantages, such as energy conservation, low investment cost, and small space required for installation. During the press conference, Mr. Samuel Tam, General Manager of Sheetfed and Marketing Manroland Greater China, also promised that they will work together with customers for the sustained profitability.
HP and KBA to Transform Corrugated Packaging Printing WITH 110-INCH-WIDE COLOR INKJET WEB PRESS
T
wo companies’ first codeveloped solution fills unaddressed need in highvolume digital pre-print applications
since the announcement of their strategic collaboration at Graph Expo 2014 in Chicago on 28 September 2014.
HP and KBA today announced plans to develop the HP T1000 Simplex Color Inkjet Web Press, a high speed, high volume, 110-inch -wide (2.8 metre wide) simplex inkjet web press for pre-printing of corrugated top liner. This will enable corrugators to combine many individual jobs together on a roll or across rolls for short, mid or long runs. Unlike traditional analogue pre-print, every box can be different.
Centralised corrugated box plants serving major retail brands will especially benefit from this digital pre-print solution for all corrugated print applications. Brands are increasingly requiring just-in-time inventory, shorter runs, and faster turn-around time. HP’s inkjet technology enables significant time, material, and shipping cost advantages when compared to analogue processes. Digital preprint is more efficient than post-print alternatives.
Planned to print at speeds of up to 183 metres (600 feet) per minute and produce up to 30,000 square metres (300,000 square feet) per hour, this inkjet press will print corrugated liner rolls that can then be placed directly onto existing industry-standard 2.5 or 2.8 metre (110 inch-wide) corrugators. This press will be the first solution codeveloped by the two companies
“Addressing the enormous digital opportunity in the corrugated market requires best-in-class technology innovation, a portfolio of solutions, scale, and a market vision,” said Aurelio Maruggi, vice president and general manager, Inkjet High-speed Production Solutions, HP. “The new press will transform the short and mid-range
corrugated packaging market, dramatically disrupting operating models and costs and more importantly create new value for brand customers.”
opens the way to game-changing value chain cost savings and capabilities for brands and packaging converters.
HP and KBA both bring proven legacies of endurance, scale and innovation to their joint initiative. This year, HP celebrates its 76th anniversary and its 31st year of Thermal Inkjet innovation. KBA is a 197-year-old company and the second-largest offset press manufacturer worldwide. “KBA has a rich heritage of developing innovative solutions that meet or exceed customers’ quality expectations,” said Christoph Müller, executive vice president for the Web Press Product House, KBA. “In working with HP, we will combine our complementary technological strengths for the needs of packaging converters.” HP Thermal Inkjet Technology helps meet converters’ needs for high-quality print, along with high-volume productivity, reliability and versatility. Ultimately, it
HP’s accelerated entry into corrugated packaging At drupa 2008, HP announced its first Inkjet Web Press. Since then, the company has expanded its portfolio to its current lineup of ten presses across five web-width platforms transforming the publishing and production mail market. In May 2014 at Interpack, HP announced its intent to enter the corrugated packaging market. In June, the company announced its first web-press offering for this market. Fewer than 90 days later the first HP T400 Simplex Color Inkjet Web Press was installed at Obaly Morava – Czech Republic. At Graph Expo, in September 2014, HP announced its partnership with KBA. The new web-press offering is in addition to the HP Scitex sheetfed corrugated solutions offered by HP.

Oxford University Press Chooses CTPS and HP Digital Printing Technology for Asia-Pacific Production of Academic Journals
F
ollowing an intensive tender process that considered both offset and digital printing options as part of a centralised printing and distribution strategy for Asia-Pacific, Oxford University Press (OUP) appointed CTPS Group as its full-service provider. CTPS is providing an end-to-end solution covering printing with HP Inkjet Web Press and HP Indigo technology, mailing solutions, stock management, and the distribution of products to subscribers in 27 countries throughout the region and beyond. “HP Inkjet meets our rigorous quality requirements for journals that we print in Asia,” said Claire Humphreys, Production and Estimating Manager at OUP. “We have seen excellent results from our digital print providers in the UK and USA and we
are pleased to be able to benefit from the significant efficiencies that HP digital printing affords.” Headquartered in Hong Kong, CTPS will handle all production, warehousing, and distribution of about 60 OUP journals from its Dongguan, China plant. It is using its HP Indigo 7500 Digital Press to print the covers of the journals, and its HP T300 Color Inkjet Web Press to produce the mono and four-colour text pages. The HP T300 press is integrated with an inline binding line from HP SmartStream finishing partner Muller Martini, providing a one-stop solution for the complete production of perfect-bound journals. The HP T300 press enables a four day production turn round. OUP’s selection of digital printing for

its journals in Asia reflects a growing trend among publishers to move journal and book production to digital. “Many academic and STM publishers are looking closely into their supply chain to enhance their efficiency, and are discovering that digital printing can both meet their quality standards and open opportunities for meaningful efficiencies,” noted John Currie, Global Business Director at CTPS. “The HP technology is a good fit to provide OUP with a cost-effective print solution. The print quality requirements and average number of copies are right at the sweet spot for HP Inkjet and HP Indigo.” Under the two-year agreement with OUP, CTPS will handle production
and distribution of the selected journals, primarily humanities, social science and sci-med titles, published at varying frequencies, from two to 26 times a year, in quantities of 70 – 5,000. OUP’s Claire Humphreys notes that publishers need to partner up- and down-stream to further drive the migration of journals to digital printing. “As print runs drop and inkjet printing quality gets better, we will see more use of digital. As an industry, we can’t just expect the technology to get better; we have to partner with the print service providers to make sure the choice of substrates meets our needs, and also work with professional societies to find the best solution for their needs. That’s what we are doing with CTPS. It’s the only way.”

We are very happy that the book block solution FormerLine and its integration via “WorkflowBridge” can do its part now”, Alwin Stadler, Vice President Digital Printing at manroland web systems, shortly explains the main benefit of the digital workflow the printer from Krakow has chosen. Since 1997, LEGRA has become a constant at the Polish printing industry that delivers products like books, wall calendars, notebooks, diaries and desk pads – inland and abroad. With a systematic expansion of the machinery, as well at the sheetfed sector as at the digital sector, LEGRA Sales Director Tomasz Kostecki can reply to customer requirements more flexibly and with more quality now: „We always keep an eye on what is happening at the market. According to this we make investments. We want to offer our customers high quality, fast production and finishing and, at the same time, a good price. The digital workflow with the FormerLine is a great added value for these requirements. We do not only expand our capacities and our creativity. For the first time we can produce to the glued product in one step. This is what I call efficient and economic production.“
Great team: FormerLine and LiftCollator At LEGRA, the manroland web systems FormerLine and the RIMA LiftCollator will be integrated to a Kodak Prosper Press 1000 for the first time. The folding quality of the products is convincing, they will be printed in black and white with the Inkjet technology “Continues stream” from Kodak and then they will be finished as book blocks or calendar blocks. The printed reel runs over two formers of the FormerLine and single signatures at a 8-, 6- or 4page-jump can be produced. The complete calendar book will be collected at the RIMA LiftCollator. Afterwards LEGRA produces individual calendar covers for the final products. The finishing machinery of LEGRA enables a perfect book binding. Folders, binding machines, a thread sealing machine, a book cover machine, a collect stitcher and a blanking machine are only a few
examples for how the different digital and offset products can be finished. DIGITAL PRODUCTION MORE IMPORTANT FOR BOOK PRINTERS What rules at LEGRA are not only calendars – by investing in digital printing, LEGRA also wants to strengthen its position at the book printing market. At this industry sector digital printing besides sheetfed printing becomes more and more important. Also text books are printed more and more digitally. Telling arguments are a flexible and cost-effective production of short runs and print-ondemand. Further production will be printed on demand, the storage will be switched more and more to the digital workflow of the printing house. For assuring low cost-percopy and highest efficiency, the process needs a good workflow.
MATCHING WORKFLOW How will the digital production at LEGRA look like? The proven workflows from Heidelberg and Kodak generate the printing data for the digital press. The software solution „WorkflowBridge“ from manroland web systems adjusts the finishing device „FormerLine“ automatically. The device checks and verifies the job regarding errors and approves automation via open interfaces and JDF. Orders can be saved, job batches can be created and special processing batches can be saved for a further usage. The new FormerLine helps to enable a more flexible production and, at the same time, faces the changing market requirements. “This investment really is an investment in the future and we are very happy that LEGRA decided to realize this with manroland web systems”, says Business Director Jaroslaw Kotfis from manroland web systems.

SAI FLEXI DRIVES RETROREFLECTIVE SOLUTION THAT CUTS TRAFFIC SIGNAGE COSTS AND PRODUCTION TIMES
A
very Dennison, Mutoh and SAi new road signage solution cuts time and costs by 40+% Salt Lake City, Utah, USA – 16th April 2015 - SA International (SAi) has announced that its flagship signmaking software, SAi Flexi, has been selected for Avery Dennison’s TrafficJet™ Print System for worldwide compliant highway signage. TrafficJet™ comprises SAi FlexiPRINT DX RIP software, as well as special inks and retroreflective(1) substrates from Avery Dennison, and a 1.6mwide, eight-color printer from Mutoh. TrafficJet™ overcomes the time and cost issues associated with traditional production methods of road signage which can be both labor-intensive and expensive. These methods include direct applied legend, use of colored overlay films, and screen printing. Existing direct-to-substrate digital printing solutions require a high initial investment and signs have turnaround times of several days.

It plays to SAi’s strengths, as well as those of Avery Dennison and Mutoh,” Bonte concludes. “Above all, it benefits signmakers and converters, governments, and motorists by providing warranted, cost-effective signage for safe roads.”
Dream Launch of COLORMAN e:line in Bamberg
M
ediengruppe Oberfranken starts production with a new newspaper printing
highlight
The COLORMAN e:line took up operation in Bamberg right on schedule on March 16. For Mediengruppe Oberfranken, the new newspaper printing press is an important cornerstone for the fast and economic production of inhouse and external publications and advertising materials. Very fast in every aspect: the COLORMAN e:line was launched successfully in Bamberg on March 16. The daily production for external customers whooshed through the new printing couples, during nighttime production alone the press will output around 115,000 newspaper copies. Jörg SchildMüller, head of the printshop division at Mediengruppe Oberfranken, voiced his satisfaction: “We had great expectations of manroland web systems and these were fully met. The cooperation between our staff and the Augsburg team and the project implementation were excellent. The punctual launch of the COLORMAN e:line is the result of this highly professional cooperation. All contract items were diligently handled. Although we had already installed a number of heatset commercial presses at Mediengruppe Oberfranken, this is the first time for us to operate a newspaper press from manroland as well.”
company, already stated: “The investment in the Bamberg location will fulfill the quality requirements of newspaper production for the next 15 years.” The Mediengruppe printing experts precisely analyzed the developments of the newspaper market. They expect a consolidation of printing to fewer locations in Germany and increased outsourcing of newspaper printing by the publishing companies. The Bamberg site with the Druckzentrum Oberfranken is prepared for this development. The location was restructured at a cost of around 17 million euros and the result is a modern printshop with state-of-theart newspaper printing and mailroom systems, complemented by an unattended on-demand printing plate feeding system. To accommodate the COLORMAN e:line, an architecturally sophisticated building was added to the existing premises. Highly automated and ergonomic
To enhance its successful production concept, Mediengruppe Oberfranken quickly decided on the COLORMAN e:line last year. The concept of the 32-pages press was compelling. The press consists of two eight-couple towers, a folder and two reel splicers. The e:line operates at a speed of 50,000 cylinder revolutions per hour. In Bamberg, nine newspaper editions are printed every night. This large number of job changeovers can be optimally handled by the autoprint function. During parallel make-ready processes, for example, the plate change can be carried out simultaneously to feeding in a new web. The available automatic circumference change ensures flexible production. Based on the high automation rate of the printing press, production can be carried out by two press operators or by three in case of very frequent job changeovers. All relevant information is displayed on the ControlCenter, the new central control console. The press is controlled via touch
screen. The MobilPad is an additional fully equipped mobile control console. It allows the press to be controlled from any location in the pressroom.
Pilot customer of IDC To ensure premium quality and minimal waste, the COLORMAN e:line is equipped with InlineControl systems. Mediengruppe Oberfranken is a pilot partner in the development of the “InlineDensity Control with micro marking” (IDCμ), the new ink density control for newspaper printing presses. Right from the start, Jörg Schild-Müller placed his trust in the system, which operates with a traversing camera and micro marking. He appreciates the impressive measuring and control speed as well as the stability of the system which he has already been using in commercial printing for a long time.
Investing in a strong market position The COLORMAN e:line replaces two rotary presses of another manufacturer and serves as a central element in the long-term future orientation of Mediengruppe Oberfranken. to produce pop-up signs that require bleeds or pole-hanging banners needing fold areas. The QR code Creator enables fast and easy QR code creation by automatically converting text into a QR code. Codes for web-links, email addresses, phone numbers and SMS messages are generated without the need for designers to download QR code images and add to designs. Visitors will also be able to see how the Textile Step-and-Repeat Tool enables quick setup and production of patterned graphics. This visual tool helps to line up patterns quickly for seamless repeats and, as patterns only RIP once, printing begins quickly and the job size is small regardless of output length. As a Platinum-Level HP Business Partner, SAi software will also be
demonstrated on the HP stand. SAi Flexi is bundled with HP Latex 310 and 330 Printers and provides the interface for HP WallArt 3.0, the custom wallcovering application, delivering fast, easy workflow management to printers who supply customer wallpaper designs and other digitally-printed wallcoverings.
