Auto Industry Awaits a Sustained Demand Revival, Heavy Commercial Vehicles Shows Good Improvement
T
he industry produced a total of 1,976,270 vehicles including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three wheelers and two wheelers in January 2015 as against 1,937,489 in January 2014, registering a growth of 2.00 percent over the same month last year. The sales of Passenger Vehicles grew by 3.62 percent in April-January 2015 over the same period last year. Within the Passenger Vehicles segment, Passenger Cars and Utility Vehicles grew by 4.79 percent and 5.58 percent respectively, while Vans declined by (-) 12.15 percent in April-January 2015 over the same period last year. The overall Commercial Vehicles segment registered a de-growth of (-) 4.60 percent in April-January 2015 as compared to same period last year. Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) grew by 12.91 percent and Light Commercial Vehicles declined by (-) 12.42 percent. Three Wheelers sales grew by 13.63 percent in April-January 2015 over the same period last year. Passenger Carriers and Goods Carriers grew by 15.14 percent and 7.27 percent respectively in April-January 2015 over AprilJanuary 2014. Two Wheelers sales registered growth of 9.97 percent in April-January 2015 over April-January 2014. Within the Two Wheelers segment, Scooters, Motorcycles and Mopeds grew by 27.42 percent, 4.34 percent and 6.38 percent respectively in April-January 2015 over April-January 2014. In April-January 2015, overall automobile exports grew by 19.40 percent over the same period last year. Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, Three Wheelers and Two Wheelers grew by 6.66 percent, 14.73 percent, 18.98 percent and 23.30 percent respectively during April-January 2015 over the same period last year.
The year 2014 started on a high note with double-digit forecasts, but is likely to end with an abysmal sub 2-3% growth. Reduced excise duty earlier in the year and the formation of a stable government did give the sentiment a push, but sporadic sales growth was driven by barely a few players like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India and Honda Cars India. The automobile industry has pinned its hopes on falling fuel prices and interest rates, and stalled infrastructure projects getting the go-ahead ó all of which may pump up the economy. Fuel prices are on their way down, and for the first time in five years, running cost has come down in 2014. Global crude prices have fallen by 40% from the highs in June, compelling oil marketing companies in India to pass on the benefits. The result: The cost of vehicle ownership has fallen by 3% this fiscal, according to an ET Intelligence Group analysis. Historically, a decline in the cost of ownership has led to a spike in passenger car volume growth. In FY04, FY07 and FY10, the cost of car ownership dropped by 9%on an absolute basis, resulting in passenger car volume growth growing by over 20%. The New Motor Vehicle Act is expected to change the way people drive. The final draft is expected in
the first quarter of 2015. The ministry of road transport and highways hopes to curb road accidents, ensure 4% GDP improvement on account of increased efficiency and safety and create 10 lakh jobs in the transportation sector. By enforcing technologies like intelligent speed adaptation, driver alert control and eye drowsiness detectors, it hopes to prevent at least 2 lakh road accident deaths in the next five years, besides imposing hefty penalties and jail terms. An independent agency will handle vehicle regulation and road safety, as per the draft. The ministry claims that the bill is in sync with practices in advanced nations like the US, Canada, Singapore, Japan, Germany and the UK. But the demand from industry for an old vehicle replacement policy may not be coming in soon, minus the infrastructure to scrap old vehicles. If the current year belonged to compact sedans, 2015 will be a year of utility vehicles. At least 25 launches are expected year 2015. With the entry of new players, the market will be segmented further. Segment leader Mahindra & Mahindra aims to create a new entry price for sports utility vehicles with its Micro SUV, S101, at Rs 4-6 lakh, while Japanese carmaker Nissan will launch its affordable MPV Datsun Go+ for families. v

This year, TAG Heuer will be creating an incredible stand at the Geneva Motor Show to mark 30 years of partnership with McLaren, and to allow aficionados to discover all the links the brand boasts with the motor racing world. On this stand, which will cover almost 1000 m2, the Swiss brand will be showcasing Formula 1 and Rally, Endurance and Formula E, and legendary races such as the Carrera Panamericana and classic car rallies such as Goodwood. A number of show cars will be on display to delight visitors, under the gaze of all of the Brand’s leading ambassadors. 2015 marks 30 years of partnership with McLaren, the longest collaboration between a watch brand and a Formula 1 team: the partnership is packed with legendary names, Ayrton Senna on top of them. It is a consolidation of shared values: performance, precision, prestige and innovation. This season, the drivers for this legendary stable are Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. Another winning ticket for the British team and the Swiss watchmaker? All elements are in place, and to celebrate this anniversary in fitting fashion, a limited edition red and black TAG Heuer Formula 1 will be on display exclusively at the show. 2015 will also see the return of TAG Heuer to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the LMP1 category, the media’s favourite, via one of the most innovative constructors: Nissan and its Nissan GT-R LM NISMO. The brand new red model is one of the most revolutionary cars. It will appeal to both connoisseurs and novices. 2015 presents a new challenge for Sébastien Ogier, World Rally champion in 2013 and 2014. Will he prove the old adage that “things always come in threes”? Let’s hope his TAG Heuer Carrera 1887 brings him good luck! 2015 is set to be a particularly electrifying year, thanks to the revolution provided by the Formula E championship, the fully electric race series, featuring cars which are little gems of technology and design. It offers a different way of looking at motor racing, perfectly in line with TAG Heuer’s cutting edge nature. The Swiss brand did not hesitate increasing its involvement with the new championship: official partner and timekeeper, and partner of China Team and Mahindra Team. Bruno Senna, Ayrton’s nephew, as gifted as his uncle behind the wheel, is one of the key drivers. Each discipline and each family of drivers has its own characteristics, habits and specific requirements, but all are unanimously supportive of the new editions of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph calibre 1887.

Market Outline Seoul Motor Show - Market InformationSince the early 1960s, South Korea has achieved an incredible record of growth and integration into hightech modern world economy. Four decades ago the GDP per capita was comparable with levels in the poorer countries of Africa and Asia. Today its GDP per capita is 18 times North Korea’s and equal to the lesser economies of the European Union. This success through the late 1980s was achieved by a system of close government/business ties, including directed credit, import restrictions, sponsorship of specific industries, and a strong labour effort. Korea is ranking number five of car manufacturers world wide. The world is turning its attraction to Korea with the most suitable infrastructure such as the Incheon International Airport, established as northeast Asia’s hub port. Northeast Asia is quickly rising as the world’s largest automobile producer and consumer at the same time. With more than 3.5 Mio. produced units (9 % cars, 7 % trucks and 3 % buses) and about 2 Mio. registered cars in 2009, the Korean automobile industry is an important customer for international suppliers. International companies benefit from the sustained openness of the domestic market towards foreign products. The market share of import cars was 4,94 % in 2009. European manufacturers ranking on position two behind Asia with a market share of 36 % of imported cars. Quality upgrades and attractive production volumes offer great chances for the international automotive supplier industry. With the increase in auto parts demand, the Northeast Asian region has become one of the world’s most vital markets. Northeast Asia is rising as the world’s greatest cluster of autoparts Industries. The potential of this region is unlimited, considering the synergy effects displayed by the coupling of the technological and price competition of the three countries. Key Region - Focus on Seoul Seoul Motor Show - Market InformationThe metropolis of Seoul is the cultural and economic heart of the country. Seoul is an intriguing city that is transforming itself from the Yi Dynasty capital of the Hermit Kingdom to a major player on the international scene, especially in the field of commerce, culture and sports. Nowhere else is the Korean drive to come to terms with a turbulent and fractured past so evident. 6 | Mega Edition February 2015 | autoASIA

The City of Seoul has nearly 10 million people with strong purchasing power and a high level of income. Encompassing the City of Incheon and Gyeonggi Province, the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) has 21.5 million people, which accounts for 45.6 percent of the Korean population. Seoul is a safe and friendly city with a low crime rate. Seoulites work long hours but also enjoy socialising and are generally more than kind to foreign visitors. EVEN MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND ECONOMICAL CARS AT THE GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW 2015 The organisers of the Geneva International Motor Show, in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Energy Office, have published a brochure that contains all of the « Green » models exhibited at this year’s event. Since 2009, the Geneva International Motor Show has been the first to promote alternative propulsion technologies. Initially presented in a pavilion specifically dedicated to these new concepts, the number of new ecological and economical models has grown to the point where today they are now displayed on the majority of manufacturers’ stands. The 85th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show will be open to the public from 5th – 15th March 2015 in Palexpo’s exhibition halls.
F
or the second consecutive year, the Geneva International Motor Show, in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Energy Office, as part of “SuisseEnergie”, a national platform for the promotion of energy efficiency, will publish a leaflet containing all the ” Green” cars exhibited at the Show. This document lists all models on display at the Salon which emit no more than 95 grams of CO2 per kilometre, regardless of their means of propulsion. This figure complies with the average emission level due to be imposed by the European Union on all new cars from 2021. Of 900 or so cars on show, around
100 already meet these criteria today. The leaflet will be distributed at the entrance to the Motor Show and on the Association e’mobile stand (Hall 5, Stand 5141). The list can also be found online at the Motor Show website. The Swiss National Counsellor, Mrs. Doris Leuthard, who will officially open the Geneva International Motor Show on 5th March 2015, has made her choice. Some time ago she swapped her official car for a Tesla. It remains to be seen whether she will be at the wheel of this 100% electric car for her visit to the Show.
12 | Mega Edition February 2015 | autoASIA
Although automotive engineers and craftsmen have always focused on improving all aspects of cars as a whole, the public was primarily interested in their performance, thereafter in their safety imposed by an increase in traffic, and finally by advances in more economic and ecological propulsion technologies. The 2008 economic crisis of compelled the automobile industry to redouble their efforts in this domain. In order to respond to the demands of a new generation of car owners, manufacturers put their foot on the accelerator to develop a full array of alternative drive systems (electric, hybrid – petrol/electric, diesel/electric, hydrogen, natural gas, biofuel), to which the “downsizing” of the combustion engines was also used as a means of decreasing fuel consumption. In fact, Toyota launched its first hybrid model, the Prius, back in 1997, followed by Honda with their Insight model in 1999. Ford commercialized the first hybrid SUV, the Escape, in 2004, followed by Dodge with their RAM pickup truck and Chevrolet with their Silverado. New concept cars always seem audacious and sometimes far-fetched when first presented. In 2009, they were presented all together for the first time in a dedicated “Green Pavilion” at the Geneva International Motor Show, providing visitors with an overview of the evolution, or even revolution, that the automobile world was about to experience. Today, all the major manufacturers produce « clean » cars. The brands of sports cars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Porsche), high end cars (Audi, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes) and more recent arrivals (Tesla) have followed in their footsteps. The Nissan Leaf, a 100% electric car, was voted Car of the Year in 2011, and the Opel Ampera/Chevrolet Volt, an electric/petrol hybrid, received the same accolade in 2012. A new FIA International motorsport championship, Formula E, has been launched for single-seater racing cars which are 100% electric and is already in its first season in 2014-2015. The complete list of the fuel-efficient vehicles that are available on the Swiss market can be found at www.suisseenergie.ch.
CAR OF THE YEAR 2015:
To Be Awarded For The 4Th Time At The Geneva International Motor Show
This prestigious prize, which has been awarded for more than 50 years by a jury composed of 58 European journalists, will be presented for the fourth time at the Geneva International Motor Show on the day before the Press Days. The seven finalists were announced in December 2014 and are now going through their final tests. The Motor Show organisers will be enhancing the importance of this ceremony through an all new presentation setting which will better meet the needs of the media representatives in attendance. The live broadcast of the ceremony on the websites of the Motor Show and the Car of the Year organisation will enable the general public to participate in this event which is normally reserved for journalists and the exhibitors at the Geneva International Motor Show.
T
he awarding of the Car of the Year 2015 will take place, as with the previous three years, in the Lobby of Palexpo’s Congress Centre. But this year the presentation setting will be totally revised. It will allow the winning car to be driven onto the stage for presentation. A large 2-section media screen, surrounding black curtains and a wall with all the participating logos will be used to create a more dramatic atmosphere for announcing the results of this important election. The final vote and the awarding of the Car of the Year will take place on Monday, March 2nd, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. The ceremony will be reserved for the journalists accredited by the Motor Show and the exhibitors
presenting at the Show. However, the ceremony will be broadcasted live over the official sites of the Motor Show(www.salon-auto.ch) and the Car of the Year organization (www.caroftheyear.org) which will enable the general public to take part and find out who the winner is at the same time as the official announcement. The jury for the Car of the Year is composed of 58 journalists from 22 countries in Europe. They chose their favourites last December from among the 31 models deemed eligible by meeting the criteria of having sold at least 5,000 examples per year. 22 cars participated in this first round. As is the custom, the final selection will be made

from seven models which are very different from each other but all are attractive in terms of innovations, quality, price/performance ratio and design: • BMW 2 Series Active Tourer • Citroen C4 Cactus • Ford Mondeo • Mercedes-Benz C Class • Nissan Qashqai • Renault Twingo • Volkswagen Passat Switzerland will be represented on the jury by Urs Bärtschi, owner of Bärtschi Media AG, and agency specialising in the automobile world and working with such
publications as Blick, Sonntagsblick and Schweizer Illustrierte, and by Peter Ruch, an independent journalist and editor of the online magazine Radical Mag and a regular contributor to Automobil Revue. The Car of the Year organising committee consists of seven European magazines, and this year is presided over by Mrs. Wibke Bruns, representing Gruner + Jahr. The group publishes the German magazine « Stern », a member of this organisation for nearly 50 years. Hakan Matson, President of the jury and automobile journalist for the Swedish economic daily « Dagans Industry » will conduct the awards ceremony and will be presenting the prize to the happy winner.
China offers $20 billion opportunity for made-in-India auto parts
C
hina offers USD 20 billion market for Made- in- India auto components, of this, the 'addressable opportunity' is about USD 7.5 billion, a study by Government of India and top industry body Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) said. Chinese imports have continued to grow sharply relative to Indian exports resulting in a record deficit of $35 bn in 2013 coming down from $40 billion in 2012. ACMA has recently conducted a study "Export Opportunities for Made-in-India auto components for China'. The study, partly funded by Ministry of Commerce, Government of India was conducted by Avalon Consulting that focussed on understanding the buying behaviour
and the market dynamics of the Chinese automotive market as also competitiveness of the Chinese auto component manufacturers and thereby ascertaining the feasibility of venturing into the Chinese market. The report identifies specific export opportunities, estimated at USD 20 billion, for auto components to select OEMs in China. The report has been compiled after a rigorous analysis of macroeconomic and trade data with research in India and China and through numerous meetings with Indian and Chinese automotive and auto components companies. On the occasion, Arvind Mehta, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India
16 | Mega Edition February 2015 | autoASIA
said, "I am glad that ACMA and its members have overcome the apprehension that India cannot be competitive vis-a-vis China and have identified it as a target market. This initaive will be step forward in bridging the significant trade imbalance between China and India." Commenting on the report, Vinnie Mehta, Director General, ACMA said, "Auto component is one of India's traditional export strengths however, India's trade deficit in auto components with China has also grown substantially. He also added, "China's auto components exports to India stood at USD 2.6 billion in 2013-14, contrasted with India USD 300 million, and this trend has remained unaltered for the last three odd
years. Increasing labour costs in China, coupled with improved design capabilities and value addition by Indian auto component manufacturers presents a favourable opportunity for Indian auto component manufacturers to explore the Chinese market." ACMA earlier this year had organised a ten-member CEOs' delegation which visited China to engage with the Chinese automotive industry. During the four days, the delegations interacted with Global and Chinese OEMs, Chinese component manufacturers, government officials and local industry bodies to update them on the growing capabilities of the Indian auto component industry, as well, as further business engagements between the two countries.
“Yet China remains a statistician's - and Western car executive's - dream. In excess of 200 cities here house more than one million inhabitants, while 10 cities contain more than 10 million people each. Then there's the Yangtze Delta region, an area the size of Germany that's home to an unbelievable 217 million people. Shanghai is the main hub of this delta, and is home to 23 million of them. Almost a quarter of China's humongous GDP is generated by this bit of the country - equivalent to $1800bn. This has helped fuel prosperity to the extent that there are now more than one million millionaires in China overall. Information like this is almost impossible to absorb.”
China auto market seen cruising to another strong year with 16th edition of Auto Shanghai 2015
Gu Chunting, Assistant to Chairman of CCPIT Shanghai and President of SIEC
C
hina will continue to be the auto industry’s growth leader over the coming years. We expect auto demand in China to grow 7% in 2015 to nearly
19.5 million units. Monetary easing by the central bank and a proliferation of new models will also support car sales over the coming year. Estimates suggest that nearly 20% of all new vehicle sales are now financed in China, up from 10% as recently as 2010. Meanwhile, automakers launched 10 new CUVs in late 2014 and more are coming in the New Year. However, last year’s 12% increase likely marks the end of more than a decade of double-digit gains. We believe that growth will shift into single-digits going forward. While urbanization and employment growth remain strong, per capital urban income growth has moderated from the double-digit pace of the past decade and will dampen sales growth. Sales of passenger cars in China grew almost 10 percent last month from a year earlier despite broader concerns about a slowdown in both the overall automobile business and the Chinese economy
18 | Mega Edition February 2015 | autoASIA
as a whole.1 With auto sales in Brazil, India and Russia struggling to live up to the BRIC hype of a few years ago, the Chinese market remains the global auto industry's best bet for sustained growth. One problem: the Chinese government. A wave of recent intervention suggests that the good times for the world's automakers have increasingly come at the expense of China's strategic auto-industry goals. The world's biggest auto market will likely sustain the momentum it regained in 2013, helped by an anticipated array of economic stimulus measures and robust demand for cars in smaller cities of China's interior regions, according to industry executives and analysts. S
MART MOBILITY CITY was first launched at the 42nd show in 2011 as one of our initiatives to become the top technology motor show in the world and an international motor show that has presence with the ability to deliver information. This year will be the third installment, in which we again team with a wide range of companies from industries such as house building, telecommunications, energy, and materials. Through this project, we promote the innovative spirit of Japan’s technology for smart communities and ITS evolving around cars, to both Japan and abroad. Focusing on freedom, we established the theme for this project as “With more freedom… change for cars, change for lifestyles, change for society.” We will propose cars, lifestyles, and a society that offer the freedom to choose energy sources and the freedom to easily and conveniently use information and services. These will also offer freedom for international visitors, using their native language, and
those with physical disabilities, to travel more safely, easily, and comfortably with reassurance. The concept of exhibitions will evolve and transform dramatically, being evocative of the new evolution of Tokyo targeting 2020 and advanced urban systems beyond that. In collaboration with exhibitors from a variety of fields, we will create this “city of tomorrow” where visitors can physically experience the city-carpeople relationship in an exhibit format for the first time. While strolling through this city, visitors will experience the fun and joy of next-generation cars, new lifestyles, social changes, and values.

Hot 192PS Mini Cooper S hatchback TO BE LAUNCHED BY MARCH END
T
he Mini Cooper S will only be available in 3-Door form and will be priced around Rs 33 lakh. Mini is also planning enthusiast events for Mini owners in the near future
Mini will launch the Cooper S hatchback by the end of next month. The Cooper S will only be available in 3-door form and will be priced around the Rs 33 lakh mark, ex-showroom. The Cooper S will be costlier by less than 10 percent of the Cooper D 3-Door says a company official. The Cooper S is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine developing 192PS of peak power at 4,700rpm and 300Nm of peak torque at as low as 1,250rpm. The MINI Cooper S is a fast hatchback, the fastest you will find in India. It can do the 0-100kmph sprint in 6.7 seconds and has a top speed of 233kmph. With a kerb weight of just 1250kg, the Mini promises to be a hoot to drive. It is offered with a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions in the UK but expect India to get only the automatic. Mini has no plans to begin CKD operations of the3-door and 5-door hatchback as CKD kits aren’t available as of now. So don’t expect prices to fall anytime soon. The only CKD Mini available in India right now is the Countryman diesel. The Cooper S is the core of the Mini brand for anyone looking for an iconic fun to drive hatchback. Mini may be a small entity in India due to its niche positioning and majorly CBU portfolio but the number of Mini owners in India is rising. Mini India has sold over 1000 cars since the brand was launched here in 2012 and with the growing group of owners, Mini is contemplating the introduction of enthusiast events, which would help broaden Mini India’s reach and increase involvement in the brand.

of investment has been committed by major automotive manufacturers to automotive production in the UK over the past two years. The UK remains the home of luxury vehicle assembly, with Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar Land Rover and Rolls Royce all producing exciting new and technologically advanced models. The UK is also a significant manufacturing location for global volume players such as Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan and Toyota. Add to that the array of specialist, commercial and niche manufacturers - as well as seven of the world's Formula One teams - it is easy to see why the UK has an international reputation for automotive excellence. Part of the UK's competitiveness is also its strength in design and development, with OEMs and bespoke research and development companies flourishing in the UK. Perhaps most exciting, however, are the tremendous advances in low carbon technologies being developed in the UK. EcoSports a month. “The Indian version of the Captur will see some changes." The length is likely to be brought down to under 4 metres to avail of excise duty benefits,” a source close to the development said. "The engines are expected to be the 1.5 litre diesel and 1.2 litre petrol used across Renault and Nissan models like the Micra, Sunny, Duster and the Fluence. A Renault India spokesperson declined to comment on the development.. The Captur, based on the fourth generation Renault Clio platform, was shown as a concept at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The mini SUV was launched in France in April 2013 to strong sales. “One good product can change the fortune of a brand in India. Who knows it better than Renault, which proved its prowess in the SUV segment. Bringing out another small SUV will be a fitting reply to competitors when its sedans and hatchbacks are struggling,” said Gaurav Vangaal, senior analyst for light vehicle forecasting at IHS Automotive. Renault India’s sales volume dropped 28 per cent to 31,980 vehicles in April-December 2014. It will launch the Lodgy, based on the Duster platform, in the next few weeks to compete with Honda’s Mobilio, Maruti’s Ertiga and Toyota’s Innova. This will be followed by a new small car (Code: XBA) in the festival season to compete with India’s top-selling Alto by Maruti. Renault sells the Pulse hatchback, Sunny and Fluence sedans and Duster and Koleos SUVs in India. It shares a production facility with its global partner Nissan in Chennai. The plant has a capacity to produce 4,80,000 vehicles a year.

New Cars for 2015: Compact SUVs Maruti Suzuki XA Alpha Expected time of launch: Mid 2015 Expected Price: Rs 6-9 lakh Maruti first unveiled its compact XA Alpha SUV/Crossover concept at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo in Delhi and if sources are to be believed shall launch the production version of the same sometime around mid 2015. Based on the Swift platform, the XA Alpha is most certainly going to be one of the most highly anticipated cars of 2015. The XA Alpha’s production version will be powered by the same Fiat derived 1.3-litre Multijet engine and a 1.2-litre K-Series 4-cylinder petrol powertrain. The XA alpha will also showcase future design elements in terms of interior and exterior trim while sharing components from the current crop of Maruti’s wide offerings. With a retro touch combined with a fresh new design, the XA Alpha’s chunky look harks back to the days of the original Suzuki SJ (Gypsy in India) series. With large chunky wheels and a wide stance, the Suzuki XA Alpha will certainly appeal to both the established car buyer and the first time car buyer in one swoop. All of the above combined with Maruti’s service network will most certainly give cars like the Ford Ecosport and the upcoming Honda SUV a run for it’s money. We expect an entry-level petrol version to be priced at about Rs 6 lakh whereas the entry level diesel should be priced around Rs 7 lakh.
Honda Compact SUV Expected time of launch: Late 2015 42 | Mega Edition February 2015 | autoASIA
Expected Price: Rs 8-12 lakh Honda’s foray into the compact SUV/crossover segment will be as important as the XA Alpha from Maruti-Suzuki. With Honda’s reputation for building bulletproof cars, their new addition to the portfolio will definitely be a hot seller. The compact SUV will be based on the Brio’s platform but will have an extended wheelbase similar to the Honda Mobilio. Just like the Mobilio, we expect the compact SUV to have great legroom and headroom. That said, we also expect the car to be slightly cramped when it comes to shoulder room just like in the Mobilio. The compact SUV will share the 1.5litre i-Dtec diesel engine which also does duty in the Honda Mobilio and will get the 1.5-litre i-Vtec petrol engine from the Honda City. It is unclear whether this new compact SUV will be under the 4-meter mark to take advantage of excise duty exemptions but it does look like Honda could pull it off by reducing bumper overhangs. Expect this compact SUV from Honda to cost between Rs 8-12 Lakh.
Hyundai ix35 Hyundai’s compact SUV, the ix35 will make to Indian shores in the first half of 2015 going head to head with the likes of Maruti-Suzuki’s XA Alpha and the Ford Ecosport. The ix35 looks distinctively like a Hyundai with its fluidic design language. At first glance, the ix35 looks like an expanded Verna with a similar split grille and swept back headlamps. There are several little chrome details that make the ix35 look much more expensive than it actually is while giving it a mature and grown up feel. The ix35’s compact size along with it’s striking design will definitely strike a cord with eager Indian audiences.
currently offer in the Hyundai Verna as a range topping engine. Expect the ix35 to be priced extremely competitively with prices for the petrol starting at just under 7 lakh and the base model diesel costing not more than Rs 7.25-7.5 lakh.
Mechanically, the ix35 will feature the same small 1.1 Litre Crde engine that does duty in Hyundai’s new Grand i10 but with a greater power output. We also expect Hyundai to offer the 1.6 Litre Crde engine that they autoASIA | Mega Edition February 2015 | 43

rom their smallest hatchback offering Pulse, to their flagship SUV Koleos, Renault got almost all the cars from their produce portfolio. Starting from their smallest offering, the Pulse to the Koleos, Renault showcased almost all the cars in their product line-up at the Mumbai International Motor Show 2015. Essentially the rebadged version of the Nissan Micra, the Pulse hatchback is available in both petrol and diesel. The petrol powered Pulse sports a 1.2-litre unit that makes 76PS and 104Nm, while in the diesel form, at 64PS it makes lesser power but 160Nm of torque. Renault also showcased the Scala and the Duster, both of which are offered in petrol and diesel engine options as well. The Scala’s petrol 1.5-litre unit makes 99PS and 134 Nm while the Duster gets a 1.6-litre unit that pumps 104 horses and makes 145Nm. In the diesel trim however, both cars get the same engine a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder unit that makes 85PS and 200Nm. The Duster’s higher-end models however get also get the retuned 110PS engine. And this is the same engine that also works force in the D-segment sedan Fluence. The French car maker also showcased their flagship SUV Koleos. The Koleos comes only with a diesel heart and is mated to a 6-speed manual as well as an automatic gearbox. Powered by a 2.0-litre unit, the Koleos makes 150PS and 320Nm in the 4x2 variant whereas in the 4x4 variants it makes 170 horses and 360Nm. Honda Cars at Mumbai International Motor Show 2015
T
his year Honda brought the Mobilio and the CR-V at the Mumbai International Motor Show. Along with the Mobilio, Honda also showcased the CR-V. At the Mumbai International Motor Show 2015, Honda showcased the latest entry in their product portfolio, the Mobilio and the CR-V. The Japanese car maker marked its entry in the MPV segment last year with the launch of the Mobilio in July last year. Since then the Mobilio has been gradually making its way into the hearts of people. With two proven engine variants in petrol and diesel, the Mobilio has quite a bit of space even in the third row and it is all thanks to the adjustable middle-row as well. At the heart of things, the Mobilio gets a 1.5-litre engine that makes 120PS and 145Nm in the petrol trim and 100PS and 200Nm in the diesel
variant. Since the time of the launch, the Mobilio has been doing pretty well on the sales charts too. Almost 3,000 units of the MPV were sold just in the month January this year. Along with the Mobilio, Honda also showcased the CR-V. The CR-V comes with two engine options, a 2.0-litre and a 2.4-litre, both petrol units. The 2.0-litre engine is available in just the 2WD option and comes mated to a 6-speed manual as well as a 5-speed automatic transmission. The 2WD variant is also available with the 2.4-litre engine. The top-of-the-line AWD variant sports a 2.4-litre engine which sends power to all the wheels with the help of a 5-speed automatic transmission. Despite being an SUV, the CR-V hasn’t been able to work the kind of magic that Honda would have liked mainly for the fact that it not available in diesel.
