PRINT PACK INDIA 2015 - Show Report

International printing sector looks to the future with surprising optimism

I

nitial results from the second “drupa Global Trends” report are showing sustained recovery from the recession with some surprising insights and positive feedback. The full report designed to highlight economic and operational trends in the worldwide print sector is available at the end of March. The results are all the more interesting as the survey itself, conducted in October 2014, was largely identical to the first “drupa Global Trends” report from February 2014. In addition this year a full survey was conducted amongst industry suppliers for the first time, ensuring a balanced picture of the global print market. Developments and important key data from the worldwide print sector – such as financial conditions, business climate, investment plans and

technologies used are given in detail and trends revealed. Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, Chairman of the Messe Düsseldorf Management Board summarises the key results of the study. “The generally upbeat picture reported by the expert panel surprised us,” says Dornscheidt. “Both the print service providers and the international supplier industry gave a positive evaluation of the economic situation of their own companies as at October 2014. Even more surprising, however, was that the print and supplier industry is heading into 2015 with a very positive outlook.” The question ‘How do you see the outlook for the coming twelve months?’ was answered by 48

percent of service providers surveyed with expectations of an improvement in their companies’ economic situation, and only seven percent with a decline. The results from the worldwide supplier industry were similarly positive: 51 percent forecast an improvement, and only eight percent a decline. On the other hand, the results from individual performance measures surveyed show a much more mixed picture: 1. Sales for print service providers continue to rise – but are less pronounced. 39 percent of print service providers report an increase, whereas 22 percent show a drop in sales. This positive balance of 17 percent is well below the positive net balance of 27 percent from the first survey.

2. The margins for print service providers continue to fall. Almost half (43 percent) of the print service providers surveyed report falling margins, while just 16 percent succeeded in increasing margins. Positive exceptions here are the markets of North America and the Middle East, where 29 and 28 percent reported increased margins. 3. Digital print is growing fast but is still a small percentage of turnover for most printers. As quickly as the share of digital printing in the overall print technology mix continues to rise, most turnover continues to be generated from traditional print. Only ten percent of the print service providers surveyed achieved more than 25 percent of their 2014 sales in digital printing (2013: 8 percent).

engis Druck AG has purchased the first HP T400 Color Inkjet Web Press in Switzerland. The company’s new HP T400 will also be the first digital press to be used solely for the production of its high-volume newspaper, the Walliser Bote. With a daily run length of 22,000, digital production of the Walliser Bote marks an important milestone for the graphic arts industry. Mengis Druck’s new press is designed for high-volume, highspeed production. “The new HP T400 will help Mengis Druck to meet the production demands of creating and publishing high volumes of Walliser Bote. In addition, a significant part of our commercial print jobs can be produced on the HP T400, for which we can utilise the personlisation capabilities of the press,” said Nicolas Mengis, Owner,

Mengis Group. “It was important to us that the new press would fit in with our existing production line and, after extensive research and several tests of similar products, our decision to purchase an HP T400 was an easy one. It was obvious that this press would meet our every need and, with HP’s support services, we know that we will build a successful relationship with them as we move our business from offset to digital.” As part of the company’s complete transition from web-offset to digital, Mengis Druck will gradually move full production of the Walliser Bote to the HP press, with the aim for it to be exclusively digitally produced by the end of 2015. The HP T400 will replace an older web offset printing press and will also be used to print commercial products.

Goss Pacesetter Club members set new records for peak performance

P

opular initiative encourages performance excellence in finishing and sets productivity standards 97.6 percent efficiency top achievement in 2014 March 11th, 2015 - Outstanding productivity using Goss finishing equipment has now been achieved by 1405 individual crews and earned them membership in the Goss Pacesetter Club. Established in 1997 to provide an incentive for achieving peak performance on Goss saddlestichers, adhesive binding systems and trimmers, the Goss Pacesetter Club admits new members each year as specific targets are met and productivity records continue to be broken. “We have seen our customers achieve up to 98 percent production capacity on our finishing systems,” says Tim Van Driessche, Goss director of commercial sales. “These levels of productivity set standards for the whole industry and provide an important benchmark for print purchasers. They demonstrate excellence in areas other than raw performance: operator training, equipment maintenance and efficient workflow are all indicated by achieving Pacesetter Club criteria.

the Pacesetter Club are Japs Olson, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; Journal Graphics, of Portland, Oregon; and Freeport Press, Freeport, Ohio. Japs Olson achieved Pacesetter Club performance with a Pacesetter 1600 stitcher with GT-16 trimmer installed in March last year. This powerful combination with its automation features facilitated Pacesetter Club production levels for the company. Able to produce booklets from A3 to A5 size, the Pacesetter 1600 stitcher can incorporate up to 40 independent hoppers and has a maximum output of 16,000 booklets per hour.

Freeport, Ohio also was admitted to the Pacesetter Club using a Pacesetter 2200 saddlestitcher. “After seeing the performance we could achieve with one Pacesetter 2200, we promptly invested in a second,” says James Pilcher, vice president of production, Freeport Press. “There’s no doubt that our productivity and competitiveness has improved since their installation.” The top performance of any company using a Pacesetter

2200 system was 21, 463 booklets per hour, or 97.6 percent of total capacity, achieved over a 12 hour shift. Van Driessche concludes: “There’s no doubt that the Pacesetter Club has contributed to companies setting their productivity goals higher. The number of printers that are qualifying clearly demonstrates the rising standards that can be achieved when working with firstclass equipment.”

“The Pacesetter 1600 has enabled us to operate at twice the speed of our previous equipment,” says Michael Murphy, president of Japs Olson. “The GT-16 trimmer has made a major impact on productivity. All the operator has to do is enter the book size and everything in the line is automatically positioned in a matter of seconds.” The GT-16 trimmer can also store job information for fast setup when handling repeat jobs. The time gained in this way means that more products can be produced on fewer machines.

“Submissions for club membership show us that between 50 and 60 percent of Pacesetter machines installed in the past ten years are achieving these high performance levels,” Van Driessche continues. “To hit these levels of productivity demonstrates the longevity of the Pacesetter systems and the high built-in value of installing one of these machines.”

Also aiming for a competitive advantage, Journal Graphics, of Portland, Oregon, was looking for a high-speed stitcher. The company installed the first Pacesetter 2200 system on the West Coast and, within three months, two of its operators delivered runs that attained Pacesetter Club status, producing more than 20,300 books per hour.

product demonstrations and a host of networking opportunities from across the world to match the current trends and demands of the dynamic Southeast Asian markets. ECONOMIC VS INDUSTRY OUTLOOK Packaging and printing industries are set for greater heights with robust growth opportunities expected in the Southeast Asia region – particularly so with the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 – which will transform Southeast Asia into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labour, and freer flow of capital.

Worldwide market outlook for both the packaging and printing industries is set to shine too. According to the Future of Global Printing to 2018 report, global printing industry is expected to reach $980 billion by 2018, with growth driven mainly by packaging and labels. Another trend observed is the shift in print technology used – in 2008, digital printing accounted for just 18.5% of the offset market in value terms, but by 2018, it is forecasted that digital printing will make up almost 50% of the global offset sector. The global packaging market on the other hand is projected to welcome bullish sales receipts of $975 billion by 2018, with sales

of packaging largely concentrated in Asia. By 2018, segmentation of the market is expected to change and Asia is predicted to represent over 40% of global demand for packaging. In line with these projections, Mr Chaivudhi Pungthong, President of The Thai Packaging Association, shared that “exports of packaging materials – primarily film, plastic and printed materials – could hit 100 billion baht with the implementation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) this year.” He went on to comment that, “despite political challenges, the packaging industry will continue to grow because the industry is tied to the production of consumer goods which have increased substantially due to higher disposable income and affluence amongst the Thai population.” Echoing Mr Chaivudhi’s thoughts is Ms Pimnara Jiranithitnon, President of The Thai Printing Association, who pointed out that “Thailand has an industry representation of over 5,500 local printing and publishing houses, which attests to its strong market demand and potential. With the experience and skillsets earned, global players can strike up partnerships with local companies to more efficiently fulfill industry demands in offset, 3D and digital printing, in turn gaining a larger foothold in Asia’s thriving printing market.” Hub for Packing and Printing Industry Players across Asia Following the show’s successful staging in 2013 that attracted 202 exhibitors and 16,833 visitors over four show days, PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015 is set to congregate the largest number of exhibitors ever spanning the nearly 15,000 square metres (sqm) of show space. Together, visitors from the printing and packaging arenas can look forward to a broad yet relevant display of cutting-edge machinery, equipment, technology and solutions serving the entire packaging and printing supply

HP and KBA to Transform Corrugated Packaging Printing with 110-inch-wide Color Inkjet Web Press

T

wo companies’ first codeveloped solution fills unaddressed need in high-volume digital pre-print applications HP and KBA announced plans to develop the HP T1000 Simplex Color Inkjet Web Press, a high speed, high volume, 110-inch -wide (2.8 metre wide) simplex inkjet web press for pre-printing of corrugated top liner. This will enable corrugators to combine many individual jobs together on a roll or across rolls for short, mid or long runs. Unlike traditional analogue pre-print, every box can be different. Planned to print at speeds of up to 183 metres (600 feet) per minute and produce up to 30,000 square metres (300,000 square feet) per hour, this inkjet press will print corrugated liner rolls that can then be placed directly onto existing industry-standard 2.5 or 2.8 metre (110 inch-wide) corrugators. This press will be the first solution codeveloped by the two companies since the announcement of their strategic collaboration at Graph Expo 2014 in Chicago on 28 September 2014.

According to Infagon’s owner Serafin González, his company’s excellent and longstanding relationship with Goss meant that the press supplier was comfortably in lead position when considering a new web offset investment. “Over the ten years that we have been operating Goss presses, we have developed a very strong rapport with the Goss team and their technology, and our existing presses continue to serve us well. Nevertheless, for an investment of this scale, it is essential to remain objective - the automation and consistent high-quality of the M-600 press were crucial in the decision.” Due for installation in 2015 into Infagon’s main facility in Mexico

City, the new M-600 press is rated at speeds up to 55,000 impressions per hour and will feature a 965mm web width and 578mm cut-off. It will be configured with a JF55 folder and Ecocool dryer and incorporates a range of automation technology.

Mexico and Theobald De Nigris Foundation. Commenting on the order, Goss sales manager for Latin America, Leonardo Clavijo, concludes: “This order is a great endorsement for Goss as it underlines our longstanding successful relationship with a valued partner. As a company, Infagon prides itself on being ahead of the field in terms of technology and customer service - and they have very exacting standards! Clearly, it is a point of great pride to Goss to know that we enjoy their high regard in both these respects.”

“More and more, our clients are employing print as a prestige product,” continues González. “This means that quality needs to be higher than ever, and in lower volumes for a more select, targeted distribution. With this is mind, we have chosen a versatile, agile and cost-effective press system that can even accommodate run-lengths previously only in the sheetfed domain.” A pioneer in its field, Infagon was the first printer in Mexico to invest in gapless printing technology, installing a four-unit Goss Sunday 2000 press in 2007. This was followed up with a five-unit Goss Sunday 2000 press in 2009. The company was founded in 2002 and today employs 350 people, producing the full range of commercial products, including catalogs, magazines, directories, calendars, books and brochures. Infagon Web is repeatedly recognized for its high-quality, and has won awards both nationally and internationally, including from Printing Industries of America, the Union of Industrial Lithographers of

(1219 x 559 mm). In addition, it is possible to make smaller gatefolds or coupon folds at one or both edges for special promotions providing new display areas for advertisers.

We had to establish failsafe processes from the outset and make sure we achieved the highest level of teamwork. The fact that The New York Times is already enjoying the benefit of the new capabilities testifies to our joint success.”

It is also possible to make gatefolds in the cover page or have the gate folded section as a wrap around the main section. The new capabilities have already been used to maximum effect by select advertisers in The Times.

The gatefold system now running at The New York Times enables the Goss Colorliner presses to produce an additional four-page wide centerfold or a separate eight-page pull-out section, up to a maximum format of 48 x 22 inches

Vinod Kapoor, president at Innotech concludes, “Goss and Innotech engineered a solution that gave The New York Times ultimate flexibility with regard to the positioning of specialized sections within the newspaper, without the

Canon Europe launches Océ ImageStream 2400 TO EXTEND DIGITAL PRINT ON OFFSET MEDIA APPLICATIONS Canon, world-leader in imaging solutions, is launching the new Océ ImageStream 2400 to bring the power of digital printing on offset-coated media to 20.5” (520mm) paper and 2-up A4 applications. The Océ ImageStream range, first introduced with the Océ ImageStream 3500 in October 2014, is Canon’s first full-colour inkjet press to print on standard offset-coated paper stock. The range utilises the latest innovations in high-speed inkjet technology at a native resolution of true 1200dpi, and new ink chemistry to enable printing on a wider range of media then previously possible, including coated and uncoated offsetprinting media and lightweight papers, meaning print service providers can mix offset and digital production lines without the need for two different types of paper and without compromising on productivity. The Océ ImageStream 2400 brings this new technology to additional applications requiring a print width of 516mm (20.3”) and an optimum printing speed of 160 metres per minute, resulting in an impressive equivalent of 2,154 A4 pages per minute. “Since launching the Océ ImageStream 3500 we have received a great deal of positive feedback from our customers,” says Craig Nethercott, Commercial Print Group Director, Canon UK. “The Océ ImageStream range opens many doors for businesses looking to complement an existing offset workflow with the power of digital print, or move over to a completely digital workflow while retaining the familiar look and feel of offset-coated and lightweight paper.” “One major element of feedback, however, was the desire for a system that brings this new versatility to a 2-up A4 paper format so that customers can integrate this exciting technology into their existing workflows. The Océ portfolio already includes a range of systems at this width, so it was a natural step, and one which will be widely welcomed by existing customers and new customers alike.” The Océ ImageStream 2400 is suitable for a wide range of high-end applications, including books, brochures, magazines and catalogues, combining the familiar image quality and feel of offset print, with the power and versatility of a digital workflow, enabling shorter or combined print runs, personalised content and print-on-demand. The Océ ImageStream 2400 includes the high-performance and scalable Océ SRA MP controller, which offers uninterrupted printing of multiple jobs at full engine speed. “Customers have already told us how the Océ ImageStream system will help them to achieve new levels of productivity and create new business propositions,” said Craig Nethercott. “Now the Océ ImageStream 2400 will bring that proposition to an even wider audience.”

GERMAN UNIVERSITY REVOLUTIONIZES ELECTRIC CAR PRODUCTION

WITH STRATASYS 3D PRINTING VIA STREETSCOOTER PROJECT Stratasys Ltd. (Nasdaq:SSYS), a leading global provider of 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions, today announced it will feature the paradigm-breaking StreetScooter C16, an electric production vehicle available for under €10,000, on its stand at EuroMold, 25-28 November, Frankfurt, Germany. Using revolutionary design and production methods, the StreetScooter project was developed by the Production of Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) of Aachen University.(1) The company StreetScooter was founded in 2010 with the goal of developing an electric car that rivalled conventional vehicles on price with realistic performance, safety and sustainability. While specifications vary from model to model, a StreetScooter C16 is expected to typically weigh 450kg - (1000lbs) excl. battery, has a range of min. 100km (80 miles) and delivers a top speed of 100km/h (60mph), making it an ideal city vehicle. Representing a new breed of car, the Short Distance Vehicle was built using the large format Objet1000 Multi-material 3D Production System for all its exterior plastic parts, including the large front and back panels, door panels, bumper systems, side skirts, wheel arches, lamp masks, and a few interior components such as the retainer instrument board and a host of smaller components. Parts were 3D printed using Stratasys’ tough Digital ABS material, enabling the engineering team to build a prototype car that could perform in strenuous testing environments

to the same level as a vehicle made of traditionally manufactured parts. Throughout the development of the StreetScooter C16, the Objet1000 3D Production System was used for making prototype parts, as well as end-use manufactured parts and production tools in the final development stages. The 3D Production System’s huge 1000 x 800 x 500mm (39.3 x 31.4 x 19.5in) build tray gave it the ability to 3D print the full range of components up to a meter in length. Revolutionary from the start Very few aspects of the StreetScooter project were conventional. Funded by university professors and leading German automotive suppliers, StreetScooter brought together more than 80 companies, including Stratasys, to work with “Lead Engineering Groups” dedicated to different areas of StreetScooter’s development. “The Objet1000 is the largest multi-material 3D Production System on the market and Aachen University was the first university in the world to have one,” says Achim Kampker, Professor of Production Management in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Aachen University. “Being able to use it in the development of large and small parts for StreetScooter was exciting in itself, but the contribution the 3D printed parts made to the construction of the car was enormous. The ability to produce full-scale prototypes that perform like the final parts,

22 | March-April 2015 | PRINTING REVIEW

accelerated testing and design verification, enabling us to bring to market a prototype electric car in just 12 months - something that is just unimaginable with traditional manufacturing.” 3D printing technology had been used before by Aachen University for StreetScooter. Various components of the StreetScooter were 3D printed in the early design phase of the car for the fast realization of geometric and functional prototypes. These included, for example, the retainer instrument board, the drive mode switch panel, the mirror compartment, and the Deutsche Post bonnet logo. The final production model of StreetScooter was developed for Deutsche Post AG and is 4.3m3 capacity delivery van version that is now operational in Germany. “With the advanced multi-material 3D printing technology available to us from Stratasys, vehicles can be easily customized for

specific customers, enabling us to design on-the-fly,” adds Prof. Achim Kampker. “These cars can be developed from scratch and ready in a matter of months, not years, as with traditional automotive production processes. The StreetScooter project has demonstrated to us how a whole new approach to car design and manufacturing is possible with 3D printing.” “The StreetScooter is the latest example of Stratasys’ leadership in additive manufacturing for automotive design and production,” concludes Shelly Linor, Director of Global Education at Stratasys. “With StreetScooter, the Objet1000 3D Production System not only enabled the very rapid design and development of the vehicle, but also demonstrates the capabilities of additive manufacturing for producing final parts used in demanding applications.”

anon has extended the reach of its successful business analysis tool – the Business and Innovation Scan – to provide the print operations of Corporate Data Centers involved in transaction printing with strategic direction and a plan of recommendations to adapt to the changes in their marketplace. Canon’s Business and Innovation Scan has been tailored to help Corporate Data Center managers gain a greater understanding of the impact that current trends in transactional applications are having on their operations, and provide a set of recommendations to re-align their department’s capabilities to maximise future business potential in this sector. Central to the new offering is the broad scope of its auditing and benchmarking process, which covers five key strategic business areas that are vital to transactional and direct mail applications: cost control; sustainability; productivity; security and integration. This provides a comprehensive insight into the entire workflow, from the integration of data via the host system through to final despatch and distribution of both printed and electronic documents.

establish a thorough review of current operations and gain a full understanding of the customer’s future ambitions. This audit is followed by a detailed and customised action plan with a set of recommendations highlighting areas of improvement and ways in which the customer can adapt their business to achieve long-term goals, cost and production efficiencies and future business growth. Canon can then work with the customer to help them follow the action plan by utilising development tools such as Canon’s Essential Business Builder Program (EBBP) through which independent industry experts are deployed to support them through their process of change.

Commenting on the launch of the new Business and Innovation Scan offering, Mark Lawn, European and UK Marketing Director, Professional Print Solutions, Canon Europe says, “Although the transactional and direct mail sector is facing considerable challenges as with many areas of the print industry, there are still growth opportunities to be had for print service providers (PSPs) willing to address the issues and adapt their businesses accordingly.” He continues, “By understanding the drivers and pressure points

within transactional print workflows, we have adapted our Business and Innovation Scan model to provide customers operating in this sector with a much broader review of inter-related business departments covering the full production workflow. This enables us to assist their strategic planning and develop a clear set of recommendations to adapt to changing demands, enhance cross-department integration and maximise production and cost efficiencies that will future-proof their business.”

The concept of the Business and Innovation Scan was first introduced by Canon in response to market insight intelligence. Under the motto ‘Reveal a Brighter Print Future’, FESPA Mexico will build on its eight-year mission to stimulate Mexican printers to push their businesses to new heights.

Digital textile printing will be a particular focal point of the 2015 show, continuing the rise in direct to textile and sublimation printing exhibits observed in 2014. High levels of visitor interest in textile applications will be addressed through a dedicated Forum within the comprehensive FESPA Mexico educational programme.

Offering an alternative to the air cushion system, the FillPak TT portable void-fill system creates crumpled paper to form filling material, which is dispensed to the required length for securing and protecting the product within the its packaging box. Complementing its protective packaging solutions, Antalis Packaging will also present a selection of its wide range of mailroom products, including padded envelopes, corrugated postal wraps, composite foam

packs, postal tubes, suspension and retention packs and printed tapes. Visitors can also see how the new Brother Tape Creator can simply and quickly create personalised and corporate branded bespoke tape within minutes. “The value of a product and the loyalty of a customer can be totally ruined if their product fails to reach its destination in perfect condition, not to mention any damage to the reputation of a brand. Therefore the value placed on the protective packaging of products and loads should never be underestimated,” says Andrew Smedley, Divisional Manager at Antalis Packaging. He continues, “At Antalis Packaging, our mission is to work with our customers to highlight ways in which they can maximise the effectiveness and efficiency of their packaging operation whilst minimising costs to deliver real business benefits to all parties involved.”

Also on the stand will be a range of void-fill products including its AirSpeed range of inflatable air cushion systems and the Wonderfill™ air-packet solution. KBA shows its colours on a reviving market

T

he general economic situation in Spain has been far from easy over the past few years. In the meantime, however, there are signs of a gradual revival, also for the important print industry on the Iberian peninsular. It is against this background that the Graphispag trade fair is taking place at the Gran Via Exhibition Centre in Barcelona from 24th to 27th March. Koenig & Bauer (KBA) and its sales partner KBA-Lauvic España S.L. will be informing visitors on the company’s broad product portfolio for the most varied market segments on a joint stand in Hall 2 (stand E509). Offset, flexo and digital for diverse applications Whether for high-quality sheetfed offset with countless inline finishing options for commercial work and packaging, high-volume inkjet printing on the RotaJET L, the printing of flexible packaging on webfed flexo presses or modern web offset for the commercial

sector and newspapers, the KBA Group offers products to suit every need. Experts from the manufacturing facilities and their colleagues from the Spanish agency will be present at the fair to discuss technical innovations, user-oriented solutions and new business models. A particular focus is to be placed on innovations for the mediumand large-format Rapida sheetfed presses, for example the new HR and LED drying technologies. After all, these well-established presses are already widely popular with Spanish users. Integrated workflow solutions with KBA Complete and the extended service packages of KBA Service Select are further key topics. For those interested in highvolume digital print solutions for books, direct mailings, advertising, newspapers or industrial applications such as decoration printing, the inkjet web presses of the RotaJET L (web widths up to 1.3 m) and RotaJET VL series

(web widths beyond 2 m) are sure to be top of the list. The flexo presses EVO XD and EVO XG from Italian subsidiary KBA-Flexotecnica S.p.A will no doubt prove similarly attractive for companies wishing to print flexible packaging. The numerous KBA customers among Spanish newspaper and commercial printers can look forward to information on the latest developments for product refinement in web offset, possible upgrades or retrofits to existing installations and a wide range of technical service offers. KBA-Lauvic España – single partner for all users After many successful years as sales distributor for KBA web presses, Barcelona-based KBA-Lauvic España also took over sales and service responsibilities for sheetfed offset and flexo presses from KBA in 2014. To optimise customer care, Lauvic has expanded its staff and opened a new branch in Madrid in October, alongside representative offices on the Spanish East Coast, in Andalusia, La Rioja, Galicia and the Basque region. Before the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008 and the stubborn recession which followed, Spain was one of the six strongest KBA markets. As far as large-format sheetfed offset is concerned, KBA is still the clear market leader with over 100 Rapida presses installed, above all with packaging and book printers. The market presence is also high in medium format and webfed presses for newspapers and commercial applications. Emerging from the sluggishness of recent years, the numbers of enquiries relating to sheetfed offset, digital and flexo projects are currently increasing once more. With the order for an EVO XD flexo press for the Mondi media group, for example, KBA-Lauvic has already booked its first success. In the web offset segment, on the other hand, users are still a little more hesitant to invest.

New modular Varius LX-TX narrow web offset press from KBA-MePrint

P

roduce top quality labels and laminates at a low price

KBA-MePrint has earned its reputation in the industry for innovative printing solutions on demanding, non-absorbent substrates. Presses for waterless UV offset printing in the highest quality have long formed a core competence of this KBA subsidiary. KBA-MePrint joins the premium class of label and laminate printing with the modular Varius LX-TX narrow web press. In a market where digital printing is gaining importance in numerous segments, the Varius LX-TX provides an outstanding print quality, versatility and individual equipment options for printing and finishing along with economic advantages for small to medium runs.

Lower costs and better quality for shorter runs As a flexible narrow web press, the Varius LX-TX with ghosting-free short inking units is based on UV offset technology, a technology that has proven itself with a brilliant print quality in a wide range of realworld applications. The absence of ink keys and dampening solution simplifies operation, saves time and leads to a drastic reduction of waste during job changes – a crucial economic advantage for shorter runs. In addition, for label and laminate printing, the semirotary Varius LX-TX achieves the necessary format flexibility without expensive, complicated sleeves using cost-effective, quickly imaged and automatically interchangeable offset plates. Compared to conventional solutions, this lowers production costs and unproductive machine downtime significantly. Especially for screen

images, the superior detail and colour brilliance of the waterless offset process shines – a great advantage for high-quality wine, spirits, cosmetics and other premium labels, films or challenging laminates with thicknesses between 50 and 500 microns. The semi-rotary drive concept allows for continuous variation of the printing length without time-consuming changes for the plate and blanket cylinder. The high degree of automation with fully automatic plate change, auto register, optional quick-change doctor blade chambers and other features greatly minimises set-up times. The sum of the technical and procedural advantages provides the user with opportunities for differentiation and specialisation in a highly competitive market. User-oriented technology platform The fully modular design of the Varius LX-TX is not a purely offset press but a flexible and configurable, user-oriented technology platform for the printing, finishing and postpress required for premium labels. Instead of the anilox inking units, longer inking units without damping units can be integrated as well as modules for UV varnishing or opaque white applications (replaceable between different positions within the machine), flat screen printing units from KBA-Kammann and digital printing heads (also subsequently) for marking or personalisation. The same flexibility applies to the inline finishing with the possible integration of modules for cold and hot stamping, embossing, stamping, cutting, weeding, etc. Depending on customer requirements, a wide range of drying systems from different manufacturers are used. In addition to drying with ultraviolet and infrared radiation, a hot-air dryer system can also be installed.

Entering a new era with LITHOMAN Prinovis has a successful start in web offset printing in Dresden

P

rinovis, Europe’s largest printshop, is expanding its product range and investing in commercial web offset. Two LITHOMAN presses complement the existing rotogravure equipment at Prinovis in Dresden, a company previously focused solely on gravure printing. The market leader for webfed printing, manroland web systems, prepared the company for the new business unit. Bertram Stausberg, CEO of Prinovis, made it clear at the LITHOMAN inauguration in mid-January 2015, explaining that many customers’ projects are becoming more diverse in terms of print runs and formats, “and Prinovis now has the speed and flexibility to meet these additional requirements even better.” For Stausberg, entering the web offset printing sector means “a strategically important complement to our core business of gravure printing.” The LITHOMAN presses are intended to print products including supplements and magazines in premium quality.

manroland web systems had to meet in the project into words: “manroland web systems was to support us with technical expertise in the area of offset printing. In addition to the pure printing technology, this also included knowledge on the versatile production options provided by the sophisticated LITHOMAN press. It went off without a hitch – allowing us to enter the area of web offset printing wellequipped.” Anton Happacher, Vice President Technical Service at manroland web systems, adds: “The teams from both companies worked in close collaboration in regular project sessions. There were many aspects to be clarified and explained, be it plate handling or general offset-relevant processes. We also provided the Prinovis press operators with intensive training.” Happacher was also impressed

by the press relocation. Between press disassembly in Laage and reassembly at the hall in Dresden, including press storage, all process steps were timed perfectly. “It was a logistical feat.” Convincing start-up Installation was completed quicker than planned and the reassembled LITHOMAN press has been running at full speed since January 2015. The first customer was K-Mail Order (Klingel Group). The printshop provided the mail-order company with a brochure in several language and country versions in the medium-sized print run range. The premiere impressed Isolde Adamietz, Head of Production at K-Mail Order: “We are very pleased with the results of the first offset job at Prinovis and are very happy that our colleagues at Prinovis can now produce our

communications even more flexibly and more closely aligned to our needs.” In addition to variable print run options, Prinovis provides the customer with new combination products at its hybrid location: for instance, the cover of a magazine can continue to be produced in gravure, while a regional bound-in insert (“stitched-in supplement”) to the same magazine could be produced on the offset presses. Or the cover could be gravureprinted with UV coating, while the content is produced in offset. In addition, customers can now order magazines that use different types of paper (matte offset paper and glossy gravure paper). Add to that new options in finishing and logistics. A special brochure produced for the “Prinovis Media Day” customer conference held in Dresden combined offset content with a gravure cover for the first time.

Transferring machines and expertise Prinovis had purchased two interlocking short-grain 48-page LITHOMAN S presses from insolvent Adam Nord, located in Laage near Rostock. The setup with two webs, two reel splicers, ten printing couples, and three folders renders 96-page A4 production possible and is the only print configuration of this kind in the world. printservices – greater flexibility and production capacity

R

elocation and reconfiguration of printing towers at the Times of India in Delhi and Mumbai

The Times of India (TOI) is one of the most important newspaper publishers among the customers of manroland web systems. The company relies on COLORMAN, GEOMAN, REGIOMAN, and double-width CROMOMAN 4-1 systems as the technical basis for its success. To continue building on its leading position, the Times of India has decided to expand its printing capacities in the Delhi region and increase its flexibility in Mumbai.

second system. This enables the printing of products with up to four 16-page sections or 64-page newspaper copies. And the original web path can still be used. In addition to additional web leads and turner bar levels, manroland web systems installed a new register control system. GREATER AVAILABILITY JUST IN TIME FOR FESTIVAL SEASON Project lead Dr. Ralf Schädlich explains: “The challenge with this project was that the entire system still needed to be available for daily production. The customer could only offer to take a short break from using the system for three days. During this time, we also needed to do all testing and commission the system. At night, the presses kept running at full capacity. The actual conversion process took place in less than three weeks.”

Two GEOMAN printing towers were recently moved from the TOI printshop in Mumbai to the publisher’s Sahibabad location in northern India near Delhi. An existing GEOMAN system was also expanded to include six towers. TOI now has the prerequisites to produce 48 color pages. Color advertising is an increasingly popular option, especially during festival season in the fall. Now complete, this new configuration makes it possible to cater to these demands and print newspapers with 40 or 48 pages. Thanks to the collaboration between engineers from the main publishing house and colleagues from manroland India, the time required to convert the GEOMAN and get it back up and running could be reduced considerably. COLORMAN in Mumbai now even more flexible The Times of India is also the main user of COLORMAN systems in India. To ensure even greater flexibility in terms of page numbers, two presses in Mumbai were connected across all sections. An additional web path guides two webs from one system through the balloon-former to the folder on the 32 | March-April 2015 | PRINTING REVIEW

6. Business Models Alongside technological changes, new business concepts and models have an ever more important role to play. These and strategic cooperation and marketing platforms, finance concepts and franchising and licence models are the subject of this innovation park. In 2016 an international team of experts will again be responsible for designing and communicating the drupa innovation park. “The dip is a platform for all visitors to drupa 2016, sharing knowledge and providing an insight into future communication developments in the print and media industry,” says Frank Romano, Professor Emeritus, Rochester Institute of Technology. Peter Sommer, Senior Vice President of the Elanders Group, adds: “drupa has always been synonymous with technical innovations. But what has been lacking is implementation in successful business models, especially in relation to competition in the online and mobile segments. The drupa innovation park is a beacon in this respect and does what the name suggests. Ideally, it will turn the drupa slogan ‘Touch the future’ into reality.” Messe Düsseldorf has once again authorised the marketing, communications & events agency Winter Consulting with realising and coordinating the drupa innovation park. For more than 14 years, Winter Consulting has been designing and implementing exhibition concepts for innovative trade fairs and conferences. Owner Sandra Winter has been actively involved in marketing, communication and sales in the IT, print and media industry since 1992 and oversaw 2004, 2008 and 2012. Registration details and more information about the concept will be available at www.drupa.de from the end of March.

After 2016, drupa will switch to a three-year cycle RUNNING IN MAY OF 2019, 2022 AND 2025 drupa, the world’s leading trade fair for print and cross-media solutions, will switch to a three-year cycle after 2016, when it runs from 31 May to 10 June. This decision was taken by the drupa committee at today’s meeting in Düsseldorf. “The entire print process chain has changed radically because of the Internet and digital technologies. New applications and solutions are developing and opening up new fields of business. At the same time, there is more focus on innovative technologies, such as 3D printing, printed electronics and functional printing,” explains Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Chairman of the drupa Advisory Board and President Koenig & Bauer Group. “It’s more important than ever before that our customers have an overview of the latest technology and are also inspired to use new business models and solutions. drupa is the only specialist trade fair in the world to offer this– and will do so every three years in the future.” One positive side-effect of this change is that drupa will no longer run in 2020, the same year as interpack, the world’s most important trade fair for the packaging industry and the closely related process industry. “The drupa exhibitors who specialise in packaging printing would have found 2020 an incredibly stressful year so the change will clearly benefit customers,” emphasises Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO Messe Düsseldorf. The precise dates haven’t yet been finalised, but it’s clear that drupa will take place in the traditional drupa month of May in 2019, 2022 and 2025 in Düsseldorf.

drupa 2016 set for success: The new drupa!

W

orldwide industry and its global players support this leading international trade fair to present their latest print and crossmedia solutions drupa 2016, the leading international trade fair for print and crossmedia solutions, is already set for success: Worldwide industry and its global players are giving their clear support for the next drupa, and many have booked larger exhibition space than for the previous show. Even now – 17 months before the start of the show on 31st May 2016 – 80 percent of the exhibition space is confirmed as booked. If this trend continues, drupa 2016 will once again, as throughout its 60 year history, be sold out and will cover the entire marketplace relating to print and crossmedia. International global players and market leaders will be at drupa 2016 alongside upcoming and innovative companies from around the world. Werner M. Dornscheidt, Chairman of the Board at Messe Düsseldorf gives his initial assessment, “In the light of the challenging environment, this is a more than outstanding result. No other industry event worldwide – neither the small, regional niche events nor national trade shows – can offer what we can. This result clearly confirms that our strategic realignment with its focus on future-oriented and highlight topics is correct. “ “touch the future”: Future technologies and markets in sight Under the motto of “touch the future” drupa 2016 will focus more heavily on future-oriented technologies such as printed electronics, 3D printing and inkjet printing with its industrial

applications. These innovative technologies are driving the market forward and are opening up significant opportunities and growth potential worldwide, primarily in the field of packaging, functional and industrial printing. According to Smithers Pira (UK), sales in the packaging print sector will rise annually by four percentage points to US$ 970 billion by 2018. There are also indications of growth in the industrial and functional printing sector. Since 2008 this market, that includes printing processes for the production of decorative and laminated surfaces, ceramics, vehicle parts, promotional items or electronic products, has risen annually by 13.4 percent and in 2013 achieved a volume of US$ 43.7 billion. Experts from InfoTrends (USA/UK) currently value the market at US$ 100 billion. “We recognised the growth potential of these markets very early on and successfully set in motion the special “PEPSO” (Printed Electronics Products and Solutions) exhibition at drupa 2012, for example”, explains Werner M. Dornscheidt. “At drupa 2016 we will cover this topic with additional events in the specialised programme and in the form of special shows, known as “touch points”.” The market for 3D printing is developing even more dynamically. The global market volume is currently estimated at around US$ 2.2 billion. The Association of German Machine and System Engineers (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau) that recently founded the company Additive Manufacturing, is anticipating an annual growth rates of 25 percent. “We have therefore developed the “3D fab+print”

brand specifically for this market segment,” says Werner M. Dornscheidt. “At drupa and other relevant Düsseldorf trade fairs, we are joining forces with other exhibitors in 3D printing technology and bringing greater focus to the entire topic of 3D”. The response from the industry to this strategic realignment at drupa is clearly positive, as confirmed by the level of registrations. Claus Bolza-Schünemann, Chairman

of the drupa exhibitor advisory board and Executive President of Koenig & Bauer AG, welcomes the “new” drupa. “In the online age there has been much discussion in our sector about the usefulness of trade shows. However, the internet simply cannot replace direct contact with people and ideas in the global print and media marketplace, or indeed direct experience of the latest technologies and solutions for this enormously varied market. At drupa 2016 we are again expecting lively interaction for both tried & trusted and the very latest ideas in all areas of print and crossmedia. The slogan “touch the future” clearly highlights the focus on innovation and new concepts. New topics such as functional printing, printed electronics or 3D printing will be reflecting the capacity for change and the need

for innovative printed matter in our industry far beyond the confines of the trade show halls. KBA will certainly be there once again!” The relevance of drupa for the entire sector is also underlined by Kodak: Chief Marketing Officer Steven Overman says, “Kodak looks forward to being at drupa 2016. drupa’s new focus on future technologies suits Kodak perfectly. It’s the ultimate venue to show our integrated print solutions to customers and partners – publishers, printers, advertisers, manufacturers, consumer electronics suppliers and other tech companies”. You’ll see Kodak’s process free plates that reduce environmental impact, systems that make smart packaging more eye-catching, the world’s fastest and highest quality inkjet presses, and micro 3D printing processes to mass produce touch sensors.” The relevance of new markets and target groups was recognised early on by drupa 2016 exhibitor Mimaki and as a result the company is giving the show its full backing: “drupa 2016 will be the number one show to spot trends in print & crossmedia solutions, so that is where Mimaki will be”, emphasises Mike Horsten, General Manager Marketing, Mimaki Europe. “Our expanded portfolio consists of a myriad of printing solutions for any print service provider. Be it large volumes, personalised printing on particular substrates or peculiar objects, Mimaki can deliver the right solution to get the job done. This diversity in our customer base challenges us to select the right show for the right audience. But drupa delivers a heterogeneous attendee crowd and offers exhibitors and visitors alike the chance to get inspired to touch and print the future - we have to be there.”   Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG is also giving its full backing to drupa. “drupa 2016 will be an interesting milestone for us to present our integrated offset and digital technologies with the corresponding services

and consumables - in a new dimension. In line with present market requirements we will be demonstrating innovative solutions alongside our partners in Düsseldorf”, says Harald Weimer, Executive Board Member at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG and member of the drupa committee. Crossmedia and multichannel: Printing in the time of the internet, big data, web-to-print & variable data printing The internet and digital communication overall has changed print in a fundamental way. This is emphasized by the current “drupa Global Insights” report entitled, “The effects of the internet on printing – the digital flood”. Interaction is the name of the game. Big data, web-toprint, variable data printing and internet-supported tools such as augmented reality and QR codes characterise and impact the entire cosmos of printed products and the complete workflow. Here drupa is pulling out all the stops with its highlighted topic of multichannel printing. HewlettPackard, an active member of the drupa committee since 2013 and a top ten exhibitor at drupa, confirms the new direction: “Communication between people is evolving just as quickly as technology,” reflects Francois Martin, Worldwide Marketing Director at HP Graphics Solutions Business. “The new crossmedia strategy at drupa with the integration of digital and analogue printing as well as print and online will show that the printed product continues to play a key role in communications. Change in an industry requires courage and firm decisions. The realignment does exactly that and I hope that everyone realises that a new journey is beginning. The new drupa stands for effective and sustainable communication in a social, mobile and cloud-based world.”

believes that drupa is taking the right path: “In a world where the “future” quickly becomes “now,” drupa 2016’s realigned aim to “touch the future” perfectly describes what visitors would like to see,” says Guy Gecht, CEO EFI. “In a fast-changing world working in an often challenging industry, customers deserve to have the opportunity to explore and compare future investment options. No other event allows for that better than drupa. The show truly reflects the direction of our industry for the four years following each show. The best way for EFI to honor drupa’s 60+ year legacy is to make the 2016 event a world-class showcase of future technology and innovation that allows printing companies to take the lead in an ever-evolving, opportunity-filled industry.” Another company offering definite support for this strategic realignment is another top ten exhibitor at drupa 2016 – Konica Minolta. General Manager, Toshitaka Uemura, CP Business Division/Sales Headquarters, Konica Minolta, Inc explains: “With drupa’s strategic realignment and particular focus on print & crossmedia solutions, package printing and highlighting the industry’s innovative strength, Konica Minolta is the perfect match for drupa 2016: We are constantly delivering new business opportunities by virtue of our deep understanding of the production printing market and our customers’ needs combined with our high-end technology. It is the right time for innovative approaches and optimized workflows for a successful future for the commercial printing and graphic arts industry and we are well positioned to prepare our customers’ businesses for the new digital era.” Also giving their backing to the digitisation of the sector and the repositioning of drupa is Landa Nanographic Printing: “drupa plays an important role in the printing industry’s evolution into a 21st century communications medium. Our choice of drupa 2012 as the launch platform for Landa Nanographic Printing was the start of an incredible journey, both for us and for the industry. We expect that drupa 2016, at which we will almost double our stand space to some 2,600 square meters, will be another historic milestone on the road to the digitization of the printing industry”, states Ila Bialystok, VP of Marketing, Landa Digital Printing.   After analysing all the registrations, the 19 trade fair halls will be structured according to the individual industry areas and topics starting at the end of 2014. The specialised programme – such as the drupa innovation park, the drupa cube or the “touch points” theme parks – will be designed accordingly. The exhibitor admission process will begin in September 2015. An initial exhibitor list will also published online in September 2015.

“The Speedmaster CX 102 is unparalleled in Performance and Productivity”, Says Ramesh Kejriwal of Parksons Packaging “We are truly excited about our latest acquisition, the Heidelberg Speedmaster CX102. Everything about the CX 102 press is impressive -- unparalleled performance, enhanced productivity and best print quality “, says Ramesh Kejriwal, Chairman Parksons Packaging, on the postinstallation performance of India’s first Speedmaster CX 102 six-color press.

has procured 7 brand new Heidelberg presses for its production units at Daman and Pune. Endowed with features for optimum productivity and quality, the Speedmaster CX102 is a surefire winner all the way. The chairman of one of the most dynamic print houses in the country believes firmly that value comes at a premium. “We are longtime customers of Heidelberg, since the 80’s. So, we are well aware that Heidelberg presses come at a premium. But, the premium is entirely justified when you look at the cost savings and competitive advantage we enjoy”, he says. The Speedmaster CX102 has helped the company achieve significant cost savings, related to production. “Before buying the Speedmaster CX102, we were running three production shifts 24X7 non-stop. But, now we have eliminated one shift totally, saving on labour, electricity and other consumables, thereby maximizing profits and productivity. The underlying economics is compelling. The corollary is we achieved our target numbers with ease. Buying the CX102 has been our best business decision in recent years”, Ramesh Kejriwal states emphatically. Vinod Kela, General Manager of the Parksons Packaging plant at Daman reaffirms Kejriwal’s statement, “Thanks to the Speedmaster CX102, we are running just 2 shifts now. With the arrival of CX102, the Daman unit is now more energy efficient and cost-effective. “ The Speedmaster CX102 experience has further forged the bond between Heidelberg and Parksons. Mr. Ramesh Kejriwal also hinted that he will be signing up for 2 more new Speedmaster CX 102 presses with Heidelberg shortly.

“This is one of the most technically evolved solutions in the printing Industry. The need of the hour is more automation and lesser manual interference. The Speedmaster CX102 fits this requirement to a tee. Our make-ready times are less than 15 minutes now, and we need less than 80 waste sheets for color matching, this saves us large volumes of ink and paper”, says the happy client. THE NEW STAHL FOLDER CH 56 FOLDING MACHINE FROM HEIDELBERG FOR SHORT RUN DIGITAL AND OFFSET PRODUCTION Stahlfolder CH 56 KT auto: the first ever automated 50x70cm crossfold unit Intelligent automation technology simplifies setup and minimizes job throughput times

N

ew addition to the Stahlfolder BH/CH product line: The Stahlfolder CH 56 KT auto folding machine performs professional folding for short and medium offset and digital runs.

automated parallel folding unit with buckle plates and folding rollers is accompanied for the first time in this format by an automated cross-fold unit. The operator only needs to enter the new job on the touchscreen for the front edge stop in the cross-fold unit to automatically move into position. The buckle plate and folding rollers are set to the right format and grammage. This simplifies the operator’s work enormously when

setting up small folding jobs in particular, as there is no need for any manual intervention. Customers will also value the speed with which the folding job is completed and the last sheet stacked on the pallet. In one hour, the new Stahlfolder CH 56 KT auto folding machine could easily complete five repeat folding jobs of 500 to 1,000 copies each. The machine will appeal to customers looking to

produce short runs in B2 format cost-effectively and in the shortest possible time, while still ensuring added value and quality control as part of their own offset and/or digital production processes. The Stahlfolder CH 56 folding machine can be customized with various options and modules to meet the customer’s individual wishes, for example with two feeder types and 4 or 6 buckle plates in the parallel folding unit.

The new intelligent automation technology used in the Stahlfolder CH 56 KT auto folding machine simplifies setup and minimizes job throughput times. Its automated parallel folding unit with buckle plates and folding rollers is accompanied for the first time in this format by an automated crossfold unit. Following the successful launch of the Stahlfolder BH/CH series one year ago, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is adding a further folding model to its portfolio. The Stahlfolder CH 56 KT auto folding machine will be available worldwide from April 2015. The machine has been specially designed to enable customers to achieve the best possible folding results for flyers in 50 x70 format. Its major advantage is the especially easy-to-use, endto-end intelligent automation. The Stahlfolder CH 56 KT auto uses the same user-friendly touchscreen controls that thousands of customers have become accustomed to over the years. Its intelligent automation achieves very short makeready times. The PRINTING REVIEW | March-April 2015 | 41

Second drupa Global Trends report: International printing sector looks to the future with surprising optimism

I

nitial results from the second “drupa Global Trends” report are showing sustained recovery from the recession with some surprising insights and positive feedback. Developments and important key data from the worldwide print sector – such as financial conditions, business climate, investment plans and technologies used are given in detail and trends revealed. Even more surprising, however, was that the print and supplier industry is heading into 2015 with a very positive outlook.” The question ‘How do you see the outlook for the coming twelve months?’ was answered by 48 percent of service providers surveyed with expectations of an improvement in their companies’ economic situation, and only seven percent with a decline. The results from the worldwide supplier industry were similarly positive: 51 percent forecast an improvement, and only eight percent a decline. On the other hand, the results from

individual performance measures surveyed show a much more mixed picture: 1. 4. Print service providers are not turning to services outside the print sector. Often recommended as a new business area – but not yet realised in practice: Just 27 percent of the print providers surveyed achieved more than ten percent of their sales with services outside the print sector (e.g. asset management for customers, updating databases, etc.). Drawing an initial conclusion from the second “drupa Global Trends” report, those surveyed feel pretty positive – even if some measures are still showing negative trends. This general optimism is supported by the investment plans cited both by print service providers and supplier firms. After all, only a

forward-looking development strategy ensures a competitive edge and thus the future of the company. More than 1100 international decision-makers from the print industry and their suppliers responded to the comprehensive survey in October 2014. The independent market research company Wissler & Partner (Switzerland) and Printfuture (UK) have – as with the first “drupa Global Trends” report and the first “drupa Global Insights” report – expertly evaluated and prepared the results. At the end of March the Executive Summary will be available as a free download in seven languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese and Russian) as well as the entire version incl. the full figures in English for a price of EUR 249.00 online at www.drupa.de.

“The major emphasis for printers is to excite brand owners and consumers with cleaner, more saturated colors on their product’s labels and packaging, which is outside the normal four-color process color reproduction,” said Jim Ross, senior technical support specialist, Prinect Color Services, Heidelberg USA.

The results are vivid, saturated colors that in most cases are indistinguishable from the original Pantone spot colors. Printers who employ Multicolor no longer need to print with Pantone colors, a costly process that entails loading spot color inks into the press, driving the press to color, then cleaning and reloading ink for every subsequent color.

“A major packaging printer recently tested a seven-color process inkset comprising the standard CMYK, together with Violet, Green and Orange with water-based gloss coating in one pass. The addition of the three colors expanded the overall color gamut by 30 percent, compared with standard four-color process, ultimately rendering the spot build combinations cleaner and more accurate to the Pantone Plus library.”

The Multicolor Toolset allows the printer to standardize a multi-unit offset press with a five-, six- or seven-color inkset, eliminating these steps and reducing down times simply by continuing to print using the standard process colors. Printers not only can increase their profitability, but also cut their procurement and warehousing costs.

Images that Jump Off the Page In addition to being very flexible and stable, the Multicolor methodology uses a four-color open ICC profile in the prepress workflow without requiring any changes to established processes. The Multicolor Toolset can be used with both the Heidelberg workflow

and other standard packaging workflows. This efficiency and color predictability is a major benefit to the entire design, planning, pre-production and printing processes. “The Multicolor Toolset has given us the knowledge and opportunity to reduce the number of spot colors printed on press by replacing these colors with seven-color process,” said Amy Jungerberg, prepress manager for longtime Prinect user Inland (La Crosse, WI) “This is becoming more and more favorable to our customers, as it helps them reduce costs. The system also gives us the ability to make better color decisions with our customers up front. As a result, customers receive predictable color from proof to press, while we benefit from reduced makeready and fewer press changeovers.” The Multicolor Toolset provides the “recipe” needed to produce the spot colors using the standard process colors. Using the actual seven-color press profile, it calculates the colorimetric Delta E (color difference) values of the

respective color swatch compared to the referenced color library. The user will be able to see a preview of the Multicolor make-up compared to the original color, thus providing full visual control. This reduces color corrections and proofing cycles, ultimately increasing proofing accuracy and predictability for customerapproved comps, initial product marketing and first press color approvals. The resulting sharpness, fidelity and expanded color gamut of the printed press sheet are all impressive, as the images appear to jump off the page. More Custom Colors in Less Time With advanced controls in multichannel separation techniques, the Multicolor Toolset facilitates the printing of a range of problematic colors such as purples, greens and browns or flesh tones. Users can easily change custom Pantone colors into seven-color process and print every job with ink that is already in the press. The addition of Orange, Green and Violet lets packaging and label printers create hundreds of custom colors with less makeready time and lower waste.

Dear Friends, It was a wonderful experience to inaugurate the 12th PRINTPACK INDIA (PPI) 2015 exhibition which turned out to be a mini world show on the graphic arts industry. It gives me great pleasure to share that most visitors and exhibitors appreciated the quality services provided by IPAMA. The success of an exhibition depends on visitors and exhibitors and I am extremely happy to say that we received complete support from both these communities. During PRINTPACK INDIA 2015, we concentrated all our efforts on providing quality services to exhibitors and visitors, and succeeded in our mission to a great extent. The main objective of IPAMA, which represents a major portion of the Indian graphic arts industry, is to promote the industry in domestic and global markets. In pursuance of this goal, the 12th edition of PRINTPACK INDIA was organised at India Expo Centre, Greater Noida from February 11-15, 2015. PRINTPACK INDIA 2015 was organised on a net area of 18,647 square metres (sq m) as against 13,871 sq m in the last edition. The gross area utilised for exhibition and related activities was more than 50,000 sq m. The recorded visitor footfall was above 85,000.
