Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair and the International Printing & Packaging Fair Attract 64,000+ Buyers Survey: Nearly 70% Cautiously Optimistic on Sales Prospects; Chinese Mainland Market Seen as Having Most Growth Potential
Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 31st Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair concluded today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The concurrent 11th Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair (27-30 April) also came to a close at AsiaWorld-Expo. The twin fairs together attracted more than 64,000 buyers from 134 countries and regions. Around 50,000 buyers visited the Gifts Fair, while over 14,000 buyers attended the Printing & Packaging Fair. Markets such as the Chinese mainland, Malaysia, the Philippines, Italy and Indonesia saw growth. 4 | May-June 2016 | Printing Review
“In the face of a fluctuating global market, suppliers should promote their brands and products even more proactively, while distributors and retailers should seek out new competitive products,” said Benjamin Chau, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director. “Showcasing top-quality items and providing a diverse range of choices, the two fairs are the ideal platform for both promoting and sourcing products.” The HKTDC organised a total
of 171 buying missions from 75 countries and regions for the two fairs, comprising more than 13,200 buyers. At the fairground, business matching services were also provided to foster business opportunities and partnership-building. Moreover, in view of the keen demand for small order sourcing, the hktdc.com Small Orders display at the Gifts Fair featured over 360 showcases offering more than 2,500 products available for orders of between five and 1,000 units. A total of 23,000 business
connections were generated during the four-day fair. Mr Chau also noted that, during the Gifts Fair the HKTDC signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Thailand, a key ASEAN country, to strengthen business promotion and cooperation between Hong Kong and Thailand. This includes offering a top-quality promotion platform for Thai products through the HKTDC’s fairs and online promotion services, covering sectors such as garments, fashion accessories, textiles, food and agricultural products.
Cautiously optimistic on sales prospects; decorative gifts & figurines to lead market growth The HKTDC commissioned an independent onsite survey during the Gifts Fair, interviewing some 920 buyers and exhibitors about their views on market prospects and product trends. The survey found that the industry is cautiously optimistic about the gifts market this year. Close to half of the respondents expect overall sales to remain the same in the coming year with 20 per cent expecting sales to improve. Thirty-seven per cent of respondents expect production costs and sourcing costs to increase. More than 60 per cent of respondents, however, do not expect to raise FOB selling prices or retail prices, suggesting that they will not transfer increasing costs to customers. As for the market with the highest growth potential, most respondents pointed to the Chinese mainland, followed by Hong Kong and Korea. The survey also analysed product trends in the gifts and premium market. Most respondents said they expect decorative gifts and figurines to have the strongest growth potential this year, followed by tech gifts and advertising gifts and premium. As for products, the industry generally believes that consumers are increasingly focused on product practicality and quality, followed by their pricing and cosmetic design.
Ideal platform for exploring business opportunities & promotion Tian Guofeng, Director, Exhibition Department, China International Center for Economic & Technical Exchanges, Ministry of Commerce, said this was the first time that the Ministry had organised a delegation to the Gifts Fair, comprising 10 companies from Yunnan
Province. “As the Hong Kong fair is not only the world’s largest gifts and premium fair but also the most influential show of its kind, it will help Yunnan manufacturers develop overseas markets,” said Mr Tian. “Exhibitors from Yunnan Province are showcasing a wide variety of high-end products such as metal ware, silverware, wooden gifts, pottery, stone carvings and gunny handbags. Responses from buyers have been very encouraging.” Shosuke Fukushima, Director of Japan Pavilion, Business Guide-Sha, Inc., said that Japanese exhibitors achieved very good results at last year’s fair, so they returned this year with 17 companies joining the Japan Pavilion, the largest-ever such delegation. “Japanese exhibitors are here showcasing all kinds of trendy products such as cosmetics, garments, stationery, toys and video games. The Hong Kong fair is an international trade fair where Japanese exhibitors can talk to many buyers and learn more about the market needs. More importantly, Hong Kong is a key gateway for Japanese companies to look for distributors and retailers from all over the world. We’ll continue to organise the Japan Pavilion next year.” Hong Kong exhibitor Phoebe Wong, Director of Eco Concepts, said it was their fifth time to participate in the fair. The company produces various green products with PLA (polylactic acid). “Through business matching services provided by the HKTDC, we have met with more
buyers from Europe, probably because our products can meet their strict requirements in terms of environmental protection. On the first day of the fair, we have already got an order worth US$9,000 from a Thai buyer,” said Ms Wong. Another Hong Kong exhibitor, Gianna Company Ltd., strives to inject new design elements into products. The company’s Managing Director Lawrence Tong said the market trend towards innovative designs is prevalent. “We received onsite orders worth over HK$2 million in total from long-time clients. We have also established contacts with many potential buyers from various countries at the fair,” said Mr Tong. Meanwhile, at the Printing & Packaging Fair, Hong Kong exhibitor Tommy Yu, Senior Manager of VersaTech Energy Innovation Limited, and Environmental Consultant of The Hong Kong Printers Association, noted cleaner production is the way forward amid growing environmental concerns. The Hong Kong Printers Association made good use of the Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair to promote new technology for cleaner production. “Many largesized printers have taken the task seriously and we want to encourage more SMEs to join the wave through the exhibition. In the first few hours of exhibition, about 50 visitors including printing-related companies from Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, the Philippines and Taiwan approached us. They showed Printing Review | May-June 2016 | 5
keen interest in how new technology in cleaner production can work for printers.”
New products and onsite orders Sia Yew Ming, Senior Corporate and Trade Marketing Manager, Mediacorp TV Singapore Pte Ltd, was a first-time visitor to the Gifts Fair. She came looking to develop products that are related to their TV programmes with a view to selling them to consumers through convenience stores and book shops in Singapore. She said that, with so many suppliers at the fair, there was a great variety of products at competitive prices. She said she placed an order of 500 units of USBs and 500 units of power banks on the second day of the fair. “I have found a lot of new ideas and new products here. I have found 10 potential suppliers and will follow up after the show,” she said. Barama is an importer and wholesaler of stationery, paper products, school bags and toys in Argentina. & Premium Fair. Alex Leibovich, Manager of Barama, said they were looking for school products and new suppliers. “So far, we have identified three new suppliers of paper products and punchers at the fair, and we have already placed onsite orders for US$20,000 worth of paper products and US$13,000 worth of punchers.” B. Food Product International from Thailand sells food products domestically as well as to different markets worldwide including Asia and Europe under two major brands S-Pure and BETAGRO. Sakhorn Jullarat, the company’s Product and Process Development Director, said, “We put strong emphasis on the quality and safety of the food we produce every day. This is our first visit to the Hong Kong International Printing & Packaging Fair. We’ve already found five potential suppliers for packaging items that will be used for our frozen and chilled food products. We can find a lot of interesting packaging products and ideas here. We would like to visit the fair again next year.”

Informa spells out the vision for IPEX 2017 Informa Exhibitions today announced further details of its plans for IPEX 2017. In addition to the innovative pricing strategy for exhibitors already announced with inclusive power and lifting arrangements, and stand size limits aimed at improving the user experience, the organisation has begun to announce how it will deliver on its promise to exhibitors of an industry-focused, value for money exhibition drawing international visitors to the NEC.
R
ob Fisher, Event Director of IPEX, said; “The printing industry has seen huge technological and organisation changes over the last decade. Some applications of print have diminished, while others have expanded in quality, volume and impact. People interact differently with print these days, and both specifiers of print and consumers of printed products have very different expectations of what it can do. We are planning an event that will show how every aspect of printing can become more relevant today than ever before.” IPEX 2017 covers all applications of printing – from signage and advertising through to packaging of finished products – and will help production staff from print management companies, design and marketing agencies, learn the latest capabilities of printers and print technology. The exhibition, covering all kinds of print, will help printers understand what the creative industries

will expect of them over the next three years and beyond. Rob Fisher continued; “We’ve been clear in our vision from day one that this exhibition will show print in action. That’s not just something we are leaving up to our exhibitors. We will have a series of features designed to strengthen the link between the creative and print industries by showing both the capabilities of the latest technologies, and the skills both groups need to learn to make the most of those capabilities, whether those are technical, marketing or management skills.” Dr Brian Minards, principal of Harrogate and London-based design consultants Minards Associates, and Professor in the School of Advertising at Academy of Art University, San Francisco, said;
“I have been attending IPEX for many years. It’s always been an excellent forum to learn about the latest ways that designers can use print and print techniques to deliver innovative advertising and packaging. Print is where design meets the real world, so to my mind it is vital that designers learn what it can do for them. The NEC makes the event easily accessible to all the main creative hubs around the UK, as well London, so I’m looking forward to seeing what innovations IPEX 2017 will have on show.” IPEX 2017 takes place from 31st October to 3rd November, 2017 at the NEC in Birmingham, and is the UK’s largest and only truly international print show.
At the 2016 SGIA Expo in Las Vegas, specialty imagers will gather to experience the newest equipment and applications for graphic imaging, apparel decoration, printed electronics and industrial printing, including: Digital inkjet, screen printing, direct-to-garment inkjet, media and substrates, and much more from the industry’s leading exhibitors. LANDA RACKS UP OVER €450 MILLION IN ORDERS FOR NANOGRAPHIC PRINTING® PRESSES - Nanographic Printing presses ordered in every major geographical region - Visitors describe Landa as “light years ahead”
Landa once again took center stage at Drupa, taking over €450 million in orders for Nanographic Printing® presses.
An estimated 200,000 visitors thronged to the Landa stand to catch a glimpse of its 20 daily live press demos. Visitor enthusiasm translated directly into hundreds of sales meetings, resulting in orders in all major geographical regions, including the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific. “
Drupa 2016 will be remembered as the inflection point in the industry’s transition from mechanical printing to digital. In the past, digital printing vendors had to try to convince the market that digital is the way to go. Previously it was a ‘push’ selling motion,” says Benny Landa, Chairman. “Now, for the first time, the situation has reversed. There is a very strong ‘pull’ from the market, driven by both customers and brand-owners, who are now demanding digital printing. It seems that the market leaders – in packaging, commercial printing and in publishing – have come to the realization that they simply must go digital.” “For Landa Digital Printing, this market awakening has
been particularly rewarding, as reflected in the substantial number of orders which we took at Drupa. Customers are telling us that no one comes even close to matching our quality, speed, substrate independence and print cost, which combine to create a tremendous value proposition.” Landa’s remarkable theater presentations, “Nano. The Power of Small.”, were fully booked days in advance and seen by 40,000 attendees. Between theater presentations, there were live product demonstrations throughout the large arcade area of the Landa stand, with customers lining up to receive print samples after each demo. Each product demo was streamed to large video screens as hundreds jammed the demonstrations. Enthusiastic customers described the live demos as “awesome”, “this changes everything” and “Landa is light years ahead of the others.”
• Strategic agreements with Quad/Graphics and Cimpress • Multiple orders take for every major geographical region • Nearly 240 live print demonstrations of Landa S10, Landa S10P and Landa W10 Nanographic Printing® Presses as well as Landa NanoMetallography® • Thousands of Nanographic Printing® samples distributed • Live demonstrations of Nano-Metallography, Landa’s zero-waste metallization solution “Everyone is leaving Drupa with the understanding that Nanography is a game changer. It’s the only digital solution for mainstream printing and its quality, speed, any-substrate capabilities and print cost are unmatched,” says Yishai Amir, CEO, Landa. “This is the reason printers, packaging converters and point-of-purchase specialists throughout the world
Key milestones for Landa at Drupa 2016 included: • Beta site announcements for USA and Europe
ordered so many Landa presses – both sheetfed and web. In short, we had an amazing Drupa.”

The result is also satisfying: “We are very happy with the results we achieved at drupa“, says Wassermann. “Our presentation was excellent: We once again proved that we are ahead of our time. Besides our double drupa highlight, a complete digital printing workflow unit with variable Inline Finishing (i.e. our FoldLine in combination with a Prosper 6000S by Kodak), visitors were able to learn more about our consistently developing, comprehensive and customer orientated Portfolio. We were convincing through innovation in all areas, whether with existing or new model ranges, extensive service offerings with substantial added value, entry into new markets and business models or innovative software and workflow solutions. Customers were also very satisfied with our consulting expertise. Our employees constantly work on ideas together with our customers, which we always put into practice. Like for example our retrofits on third-party machines. The high intake of orders will fill our factory until 2017. This is a wonderful result and a clear sign that we meet the needs of our customers and delight the industry.” Printing Review | May-June 2016 | 19
drupa 2016 is a resounding success: EXCELLENT BUSINESS DEALS CONCLUDED IN AN OUTSTANDING INVESTMENT CLIMATE Decisive impulses for the global print industry & top marks for drupa 2016
T
he atmosphere at drupa 2016, the world’s biggest and most important trade fair for print and crossmedia solutions, can hardly be topped: the investment climate is extremely good and has far exceeded all expectations. As the 11-day trade fair draws to a close the 1,837 exhibitors from 54 countries unanimously reported excellent business deals, extremely promising contacts and a positive spirit for the global print industry.
The re-positioning of drupa and its focus on future themes with strong growth potential – such as 3D printing, functional printing or packaging printing – proves to be a real asset. Be it publication, commercial, packaging or industrial printing – printing technology offers matching solutions for all of these applications while opening up new lines of business and business models at the same time. “The print industry is constantly re-inventing itself and offers a wealth of highpotential facets. And this is precisely what drupa 2016 has very impres-

sively proven. We were able to experience a highly innovative industry here in the 19 exhibition halls, one that has succeeded in moving out of the “valley of tears” and grasping the future by the neck,” explains Claus BolzaSchünemann, Chairman of the drupa Committee and Chairman of the Board at Koenig & Bauer AG. drupa 2016: trade fair of decision makers and capital spenders Some 260,000 visitors from 188
countries and some 1,900 journalists from 74 countries travelled to Düsseldorf to learn about technology innovations, further developments and new business lines. Visitors’ decision-making competence is extremely high: approximately 75% of all visitors are executives and in a decisive and or co-decisive capacity when it comes to capital expenditure in their companies. Various other indicators produced by the visitors’ survey also underscore very clearly that drupa is a flawless B2B trade fair and platform for business decisions:
• 54% of visitors came to drupa 2016 with concrete investment intentions • 29% placed orders during drupa • 30% are planning to place their orders after drupa • 60% found new suppliers at drupa The development in visitor attendance (2012: 314,248) reflects the worldwide consolidation occurring in the industry. This is why visitors’ high decision-making competence produced a particularly positive effect, all the more as one in two visitors expected their companies’ business to develop very well over the next twelve months. “Customers – with very few exceptions – no longer come with large delegations or as part of a company outing to drupa. It is rather the top managers that travel to Düsseldorf today – and from 188 countries to this drupa,” explains Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. drupa 2016: global No. 1 trade fair Totalling 76%, the percentage of international visitors is up 16% from four years ago. This figure can be attributed to Asian visitors: 17% of international visitors came from this continent alone (2012: 13.6%). And here India accounted for the largest share with 5%, followed by China with 3%. The leading European countries were Italy, France, the Netherlands and the UK. “This means that drupa has enhanced its global market significance and its international rating even further. It is the unrivalled global No. 1 trade fair for the print and media industries,” says Werner Matthias Dornscheidt commenting on the results of drupa 2016. Positive verdict for technical side events Meeting with high demand was the programme of accompanying expert events with its three pillars drupa cube, drupa innovation park, 3D fab + print, touchpoint packaging as well as Printed Electronics and Solutions. two drupa visitors were interested in the various special shows and lecture theatres. drupa cube, the event and congress location, was received particularly enthusiastically. Almost 3,500 drupa visitors flooded into the cube over the eleven trade fair days in order to find out about a plethora of topics. In particular high demand were the keynotes by Frans Johansson (founder and CEO of The Medici Group), Silas Amos ? (founder of Silas Amos Ltd. Design Thought) and Shane Wall (Chief Technology Officer HP And Global Head of HP Labs). The Creative Day organised by Messe Düsseldorf in cooperation with W&V which addresses marketers and creative workers in particular, was even sold out. And the C-Level Sessions specifically targeting executives were also fully booked. Meeting with a very positive response was the drupa innovation park that focused on innovative business models in addition to technology innovations from renowned exhibitors. On display were ready-to-market applications for Augmented Reality in field service and in advertising but also successful examples for multi-channel campaigns. The crucial insights from the content-driven dip 2016: print creates content and added value! drupacity: an experience for all And drupa does not stop at the gates of the exhibition centre. Instead, Düsseldorf presented itself with a versatile programme as an attractive trade fair destination for all things drupa: be it an exhibition or 3D event, discussion forums or a “rolling lab”: drupacity allowed thousands of interested visitors to experience the trade fair themes – live and hands-on right in the city centre – providing both drupa visitors and exhibitors with tangible added value and a concept that is truly “one of a kind” worldwide. “Our concept of bringing the drupa themes to the city thereby making it possible for people to understand and experience technology has paid off 100%. Thanks to numerous city-centre activities Düsseldorf citizens and visitors were able relate to the trade fair themes. drupacity proved an experience for all,” reworked Boris Neisser, General Manager at the trade association Destination Düsseldorf, which organised the drupacity programme, who went on to say: “The many multipliers from all over the world felt welcome in Düsseldorf and will return to their home countries with these positive impressions. This is “city marketing live” representing a locational advantage not to be underestimated for our city.” As announced at the midpoint of drupa, the event will will stick to its fouryear cycle meaning the next drupa will be held from 23 June to 3 July 2020. Exhibitors Testimonials: Asahi, Dr. Dieter Niederstadt, Technical Marketing Manager With drupa 2016 we see our efforts confirmed that visitors, prospects and customers changed their point of view in the flexo printing area completely. In today’s surrounding, stunning graphical quality is a given. Customers are more looking into productivity advancements of a product such as the improvement in overall equipment effectiveness, e.g. to reduced make ready waste and fewer press wash-ups. of fixed colour palette printing in reference to extended color gamut (ECG) and drupa was a good podium for that. These OEE benefits create significant improvement at the print converter and has been a hot topic in our conversations at the booth. Bobst, Jean-Pascal Bobst, CEO The industries we serve today are searching for drastic productivity improvement through innovations, services and people relationship. Moreover the digitalization of the packaging supply chain is paving the way for the future. This year´s drupa has again been a great platform for us to demonstrate that we deliver the right solutions for our customers´ applications – be they folding carton, flexible material, labels or corrugated board. Canon, Jeppe Frandsen, Executive Vice President Canon Europe Canon came to drupa 2016 with the aim of demonstrating the range and depth of our capabilities in a way that reflected the real business of our customers. We set out to give visitors fresh ideas about how they could expand their capabilities and to inspire them to unleash print in their own individual ways. We’ve surpassed that objective on multiple levels. The response of visitors to what we’ve shown and discussed with them has been hugely positive. The deciding factor for so many Canon customers here at drupa 2016 has been the inspiration they have taken from the live print applications we have shown – so much so, in fact that for us it has been the ‘applications drupa’. Our many applications, offering significant added value particularly in the areas of commercial print and publishing, have given them confidence in the immediate business potential of our end-to-end solutions and, through their investments with Canon, they’re looking to ensure the long-term future of their businesses. In turn, our commitment far beyond drupa is to give them the long-term support to achieve their goals. CHILI publish, Kevin Goeminne, CEO drupa 2016 gave us the opportunity to show that CHILI publish has evolved a lot since it first drupa participation in 2012. With not only the launch of a new product but also the numerous partnerships, CHILI publish wants to emphasize that our company is growing and is becoming an important player in the industry. At the booth, we wanted to create a casual and cosy feeling where people were welcomed to learn more about CHILI publish and its products. Which has certainly paid off as the number of visitors on our booth exceeded our expectations! drupa gave us the opportunity to meet people we have only been in contact with via mail or phone and to strengthen existing contacts in real life. CHILI publish is looking forward to the next edition of drupa and will make sure to show many more innovations by then! EFI, Guy Gecht, CEO The USP of drupa is clearly the production plants in operation. This allows visitors to follow and assess the complete workflow. An asset no other trade fair in the world has to offer. Enfocus, Fabian Prudhomme, Vice President Again, drupa managed to attract visitors from all over the world, which gave us an extraordinary opportunity to touch base with our existing Enfocus community as much as with new customers. People who were not familiar yet with Enfocus had the chance to discover our solutions and the value these can bring to their respective companies. We showcased the endless possibilities of the Enfocus solutions during the 800 live demos we delivered on our booth. We are absolutely delighted with the feedback and votes of confidence we received from our visitors. Not only is this the result of our customer centric approach in everything we do, but I also believe that we succeeded in convincing our visitors that it is possible to not only touch 24 | May-June 2016 | Printing Review

the future but also automate it! This drupa was the most successful edition for Enfocus yet and we are already looking forward to drupa 2020. Epson, Duncan Ferguson, Executive Director, Professional Printing & Robotics, Epson Europe This drupa is Epson’s biggest ever showcase for our most complete range of inkjet printers for prepress, signage, photographic, textile and label applications. We have had a very successful show with significant orders from companies around the globe, particularly for the SureColor SC-S signage range, which has led us to increase production to meet demand. Interest in our SurePress L6034UV digital label press, commercialised at drupa, was high with orders taken at the show from Germany and the UK. Our Print Shop Zone too was extremely busy and attracted huge interest from visitors discovering how our desktop solutions enable them to offer a
collaborative design-and-print service to produce personalized products. Esko, Udo Panenka, President At drupa 2016, Esko exhibited with its sister company X-Rite Pantone and subsidiaries Enfocus and MediaBeacon. Spread out across six Inspiration Zones, visitors experienced the combined innovations to improve the steps of a typical packaging production workflow. Bringing that message and demonstrating the value add of a connected and integrated workflow has come across really well for the many visitors we welcomed at our stand. This drupa helps us to reconfirm our leadership position in all domains of packaging and labels workflows; the overwhelming amount of visitors from all over the globe exceeded our expectations both in closed orders as well as in new contacts. undoubtedly the right theme for Goss this drupa. We’ve had a very successful show, working side-byside with our partners, and this will be continue to be the most logical way forward to support not only our existing customers, but new prospects too. Our drupa 2016 successes include significant product orders, signed for live on the stand; the sale of the first Goss Thallo system since acquiring of this product line from DG press ServiceS; and the launch of another Goss industry-first, the embedded color bar for web offset packaging production. All in all, drupa 2016 far exceeded our expectations and confirms that our approach to business, with our customers and partners at the forefront of our strategy, is the right direction for Goss moving forward. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Gerold Linzbach, CEO We are very satisfied with the outcome of the trade fair. Thanks to
drupa Heidelberg starts into the new business with a positive outlook. Our motto Simply Smart was a success with visitors. We received a high demand for our industrial printing ranges and exceeded our own targets. The further automation of offset printing produced a high number of contracts signed especially for our high-performance presses. Together with our partner Fuji we have set new standards in industrial digital printing. The debut and market launch of our new digital printing machine Primefire 106 was extremely promising prompting worldwide sales for packaging applications. With drupa tailwainds we are on course for growth. Highcon, Aviv Ratzman, CEO and Co-Founder drupa 2016 has been a tipping point for our business. We launched our technology at drupa 2012, but this
one has been a real reinforcement of our vision. Sales to both new customers and existing customers have surpassed our expectations by far. drupa has been confirmation that digital technology, and finishing in particular, has reached the point where it is becoming mainstream. Many of the customers we met during drupa have realized the need to start investing in technology rather than continue to expand capacity, adding value to their products instead of competing on price. HP, Francois Martin, worldwide marketing director HP Graphics Solutions Business drupa 2016 has been a landmark show for HP. It is clear that digital has arrived as mainstream, with HP experiencing the best attendance at any drupa ever and with sales not only surpassing 2012 results by 20%, but exceeding our 2016 ambitious goals by 25% overall. drupa continues to be the most relevant industry event for innovation, and HP is committed to keep reinventing to help our customers reinvent their own possibilities, ensuring that drupa 2020 is better than we could imagine.
Ink Router, Robert Godwin, Director of Business Development Our first time exhibiting at drupa was a great success. It made it possible for us to introduce our dynamic new product, InkRouter to visitors from all over the world. One of the largest fairs in the world brought us in contact with leaders in the printing industry, which offered us the opportunity to network and to create more brand awareness and brand recognition. Sabine Geldermann, Global Director of drupa and the Messe Düsseldorf team did a great job, I’m glad we were part of this event. drupa 2016 has exceeded our expectations and we are already looking forward to the next edition! Kodak, Olivier Claude, Worldwide Director of Sales and Customer Operations drupa 2016 completely exceeded Kodak’s expectations. Tens of thousands of high caliber visitors, customers and prospects from around the world visited our stand to do business and see the more
than 20 products and technologies Kodak launched at this year’s show. The fact that we hit our sales target on Day 7 – and having reached 168% of our sales target on Day 9 is testimony of the industry’s trust in our cutting edge technology, which helps our customers deliver on profitability, sustainability and growth.
reflected in the substantial number of orders which we took at drupa. Customers are telling us that no one comes even close to matching our quality, speed, substrate independence and print cost, which combine to create a tremendous value proposition.
Landa, Benny Landa, Chairman drupa 2016 will be remembered as the inflection point in the industry’s transition from mechanical printing to digital. In the past, digital printing vendors had to try to convince the market that digital is the way to go. Previously it was a ‘push’ selling motion. Now, for the first time, the situation has reversed. There is a very strong ‘pull’ from the market, driven by both customers and brand-owners, who are now demanding digital printing. It seems that the market leaders – in packaging, commercial printing and in publishing – have come to the realization that they simply must go digital. For Landa Digital Printing, this market awakening has been particularly rewarding, as
Massivit 3D Printing Technology, Lilach Sapir, VP Marketing and Business Development This drupa is Massivit 3D first presentation at an international trade fair. It was a great chance for us to present our 3D printing solutions made for printers in an exhibition for Print Service Providers. Our expectations are more than fulfilled. We had some nice sales mostly to large/wide format printers who understand that the use of 3D printing is their future and enables them to add another dimension to their business and grow their services and business in the visual communication world. different segments of the printing industry. Our 295 sq. booth was a success and attracted a large audience during the 11 days of show! The drupa organisation was as impeccable as ever, and it manages to keep up with the trends in an evolving industry. We had the chance to talk to our customers and discuss how Mimaki can support them with future opportunities. Our Design Book was a big hit, as it shows what kind of applications Mimaki customers have already developed in the past and it thanks our clients for their creativity. This portfolio also inspires people and shows the amazing results that emerge when we create together with our clients. QuadTech, Karl Fritchen, President drupa 2016 has been a fantastic show for QuadTech! We wanted to reach specific printing markets with the launch of four new products. There is no better place than drupa to connect with those markets, and take advantage of the bright spotlight. Not only was the quantity of show visitors very high for us, but also the quality. It seemed that almost all were customers or potential customers of our print technology. We experienced very high interest and extremely positive response to our ColorTrack,
DeltaCam, Inspection System and MultiCam TRIM introductions. After investing heavily in new technology innovations, drupa gives us the opportunity to meet with our markets directly, and show them the fruits of our labor. Ricoh, John Blyth, Market Development Manager & Production Printing Business Group For us drupa 2016 has been all about enabling Ricoh to open new worlds of opportunity to new and potential clients alike. We have been delighted by the strong and steady flow of visitors on to our stand. There is nowhere like drupa for bringing decision makers in our industry, from all corners of the globe, together. Most notable of all for us has been the relative seniority and influence of so many of those we have been proud to host on our stand. They seem to have appreciated the warm open welcome and the way Ricoh has set out a clear narrative that covers the full, integrated breadth of services and solutions that we offer. In production printing and beyond. From multi-drop inkjet to additive manufacturing, end to end workflow to neon toner and lean and green consultanc. Drupa 2016 has been eventful. looking forward to drupa 2020. Scodix, Amit Shvartz, Vice President of Marketing Gaining over 100 new customers in 11 days, Scodix had an extremely successful drupa 2016. The largest exhibition in print provides a hugely popular forum and within this buzzing environment, we saw sales doubling and doubling with each coming day. With an incredibly fruitful launch at the show in 2012, we saw our company grow from 12 to over 200 customers and drupa played a vital part in that accomplishment. We hoped for similar success in 2016 and the show has exceeded all expectation. Scodix’ vision to ‘enhance your competitive edge’ and drupa’s message of ‘touch the future’ went hand-in-hand for us at the show and we saw these synergies demonstrated by phenomenal business results. VDMA, Dr. Markus Heering, Managing Director of the Printing and Paper Technology Association within the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) Not only our own VDMA stand got an enormous respones, our member companies also gave us the feedback that the quality of
conversations they had and the numner of lead and new orders were extremely positive. Our manufacturers have made use of the lately difficult years to develop custom-fit solutions for the changed needs in the print industry. We have every reason to look to the future with optimism. Print is an industry with a future! Xeikon, Danny Mertens, Corporate Communications Manager drupa 2016 was a special edition for us, as it was our first major show since we were acquired by Flint Group. The booth, including a number of Xeikon technologies and Flint Group presence, made this collaboration visible for our visitors. With the theme “X marks the spot”, we wanted to mark our position in the market. We are pleased to say that once again, drupa 2016 has been a successful edition for us. We aimed to create an open and welcome atmosphere at our booth and this was more than visible through the amount of visitors on our stand every day. It gave us the opportunity to get in contact with partners, competitors, existing customers that we have known for years and new, future customers from all over the world. drupa is a unique experience, not only by its size but most of all by its diversified public.

FIRST QUADTECH DELTACAM™ AND QUADTECH COLOR CONTROL WITH SPECTRALCAM™ CHOSEN FOR NEW GOSS THALLO ORDER
D
rupa 2016 - Düsseldorf, Germany - 10 June, 2016 QuadTech confirmed the first sale of its new QuadTech DeltaCam. This new innovation from QuadTech, launched at drupa 2016, as well as its established QuadTech Color Control with SpectralCam, will be included within the specification of a new Goss Thallo press, being installed in Russia early next year. DeltaCam provides breakthrough color technology with a 31-bin spectrophotometer, offering printers and converters full, in-line spectral measurement on film, paper or board.
accurate color throughout the roll were key factors that DG press ServiceS considered when taking the decision to recommend QuadTech technology to its customer. Peter Kloppers, CEO, DG Press ServiceS, commented on the reasons QuadTech Color Control was the clear choice for this leading Russian flexible packaging converter, "One of this company's goals is to reduce set-up waste and makeready time to an absolute minimum, to help keep production as costefficient as possible. We, therefore
decided that QuadTech's Color Control System would be the ideal solution. With SpectralCam's unique capabilities to accurately measure color in-line and at high speeds on flexible and transparent substrates, it is sure to streamline set-up and minimize job reruns as soon as the press is in operation." The QuadTech Color Control with SpectralCam ensures that users can quickly establish the correct color specification on a web-offset press and maintain this specification
throughout production of the job. "Our extensive experience with spectral measurement ensures that our solutions meet customers' requirements for reliable, consistent and accurate color," explained Kris DeSmet, Area Sales Manager, QuadTech. "DG Press ServiceS is a valued QuadTech customer and we are looking forward to demonstrating how our systems will add value and significantly reduce waste for this latest Goss Thallo customer."
Stewart Dyer, Sales Manager, QuadTech explained, "Until now, a solution with DeltaCam's capabilities would only have been affordable to a small section of the market. With the introduction of DeltaCam at drupa, print operations of all sizes can get in-line spectral measurement for what they would have paid for a register system 40 years ago. This, combined with its advanced, accurate color measurement technology makes DeltaCam a true innovation for time-efficient, costeffective packaging production." QuadTech worked with DG press ServiceS and Goss International to ensure the new Goss Thallo customer received the best possible solution. All in Print China 2016: Connecting the World with Printing 6th All in Print is on the right track All in Print is charted for success: roughly one year before it kicks off on 18 October 2016 more than 400 renowned companies from the international print suppliers industry have already confirmed their participation at the 6th edition of All in Print, already occupying over 80,000 m2 at this early point in time. The list of exhibitors includes such global players as Dupont, Daetwyler Graphics, Epson, Siemens, Asian brands like Daqiao Packaging, Focusight, Mclantis Group, Masterwork, STS Machinery, UP Group, Weng Cheng Machinery, Yilee, Yoco and the Austrian upstream supplier B&R Industrial Automation, to name but a few. Joint participations from the USA and Germany have also signed up to exhibit. Underscoring the relevance of All in Print Project Director Evian Gu says: “These excellent interim results reflect the major importance of the Asian market. According to studies carried out by SmithersPira, Asia is by far the world’s most important growth region for the printing industry. By 2018 Asia’s market share in the global print suppliers industry will rise from 38.8 % in 2013 to 43 %. All in Print is the key to these important future markets,” and goes on to say; “fortunately key players like Bobst, Canon, Fujifilm, Komori, Konica Minolta, Ricoh and Xerox have already booked exhibition space at the forthcoming All in Print. This is definitely further confirmation of the relevance of All in Print.” Under the heading “Discover the Future of Printing” All in Print 2016 in Shanghai will bring some changes in its conceptual cornerstones: the duration of the trade fair will be prolonged from four to five days (18 to 22 October) while its frequency was already increased to every two years as early as 2014. In addition to this, the six exhibition halls in Shanghai will all be themed – “All in Press”, “All in Digital”, “All in Label”, “All in Packaging”, “All in Creativity” and “All in E-business”. Over 700 national and international exhibitors will present - on a total 90,000 m2 of exhibition space. The exhibitors’ ranges are rounded off by a technical supporting programme boasting well over 30 forums and seminars. The Messe Düsseldorf Group and its flagship fairs drupa (No. 1 for print and crossmedia solutions) and interpack (International Trade Fair for Packaging Machines and Appliances, Packaging Materials and Auxiliaries, Confectionery Machines) develop promising growth markets throughout the world with the help of regional trade fairs. Only recently did the debut of swop, the Shanghai World of Packaging (17 to 20 November 2015), draw to a successful close. The dates for the second edition have already been fixed (7 to 10 November 2017). And preparations for Pack Print International (International Packaging and Printing Exhibition for Asia) from 20 to 23 September 2017 in Bangkok are also in full swing. “With this international trade fair network we offer global suppliers to the print industry matching tools for addressing selected regional markets,” says Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa and Global Head for Printing Technologies, summing up the strategy of Messe Düsseldorf. Young Linguist awarded drupa Prize 2016 DR. ZSÓFIA GYARMATHY CONTRIBUTES TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF ENGLISH GRAMMAR
D
r. Zsófia Gyarmathy has received the drupa Prize 2016 for her doctoral thesis on a special grammar phenomenon in the English language so far not sufficiently researched by science. drupa recognised the 32-year old Hungarian for her doctoral thesis “Achievements, Durativity and Scales”. The prize comes with EUR 6,000 prize money and was presented by Claus Bolza-Schünemann (Chairman of the Management Board at Koenig & Bauer AG and Chairman of the drupa committee), Werner M. Dornscheidt (President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf) and Prof. Dr. Anja Steinbeck (Chancellor of Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf) as part of a ceremony held on 9 June at the Düsseldorf Congress Center Ost/East during drupa 2016. In his laudatory speech Claus Bolza-Schünemann praised the prize-winner’s achievement considered extraordinary by a jury of experts. In addition to what is considered an extremely impressive work overall Dr. Zsófia Gyarmathy has succeeded in demonstrating the significance of “achievements” both in semantics and philosophy and mathematics but also in the development of artificial intelligence. The young scientist found an innovative approach to solving the scientifically much debated but so far insufficiently solved problem by subjecting several achievements to a “slow-motion observation”. Taking this approach even a non-continuous fact can be described in continuous form. On the basis of this theory the prize-winner developed a mathematical calculation model allowing achievements to be captured and processed in their strictly formally logical sense. With her work, the jury adds, Dr. Zsófia Gyarmathy has given the English language more clarity and to some extent also paved the way to the technological future of Print 4.0. In view of increasing digitisation, improved man-machine communication is the dominating theme. “We know or rather assume that there is still a long way for us to go,” says Claus Bolza-Schünemann, and adds: “But every journey starts with the first step. Dr. Gyarmathy has made an important contribution to this with her work.” What precisely is this doctoral thesis about? Each language has its peculiarities that puzzle scientists. When referring to events in English that occur while speaking, speakers use the continuous or progressive form, formed by adding the suffix -ing to verbs. “Mary is eating a piece of cake” – is a nice example of this grammar rule because this statement is made within another more prolonged process – the eating, for example. But it is also possible to apply the progressive form to predicates describing an immediate change of state as expressed in the sentence: “Tom is arriving” meaning that Tom is still on the train but will also soon be home. Such 34 | May-June 2016 | Printing Review

changes of state are described by Achievements – also referred to as predicates – which are regarded as predicates of non-continous, i.e. non-durative events. Achievements here do not describe a course but why is the progressive form used nevertheless? This is one of the questions Dr. Zsófia Gyarmathy addressed in her doctoral thesis completed in 2015 and rated as summa cum laude and she presented answers. On the Prize Winner Dr. Zsófia Gyarmathy was born in Hungary. She successfully completed her Master’s in English Studies with theoretical linguistics as a focal and second subject at the University in Budapest. 2014 saw the linguist switch to the philosophical faculty at Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf, where she completely her doctoral thesis entitled “Achievements, Durativity and Scales” with honours last year. Dr. Zsófia Gyarmathy teaches formal semantics and formal logic as a scientific assistant at the philosophical faculty and she also worked in the fields of phonology and computer linguistics.
On the drupa Prize Every year Messe Düsseldorf awards the drupa Prize to the best doctoral thesis produced at the Philosophical Faculty of the HHU. From as early as 1978 it has already recognised the outstanding humanistic works of this Düsseldorf University and promotes the publication and dissemination of the theses with the prize money of EUR 6,000. The drupa Prize is adjudicated by a body of experts consisting of the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of Heinrich-Heine University, Düsseldorf, the Chairman of the drupa committee and the President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf. 36 | May-June 2016 | Printing Review
GOSS M-600 PRESS SURPASSES EXPECTATIONS WITH FIRST INSTALLATION OF LED UV DRYING INSTALLATION AT KINMEI PRINTING CO. MARKS WORLD'S FIRST LED-UV DRYING SYSTEM ON A HIGH SPEED WEB OFFSET PRESS CUSTOMER REPORTS 70 PERCENT ENERGY SAVINGS SINCE INSTALLATION
K
inmei Printing Co. Ltd of Tokyo, Japan has announced unprecedented results from a ground-breaking project featuring the first ever LED-UV installation on a high-speed web offset press. Part of a wider investment in new capabilities, productivity from the company's enhanced 16-page Goss M-600 press line is now surpassing all expectations. Goss International engineers from its Singapore headquarters project managed the operation to extend the capabilities of the ten-year-old M-600 press which involved reconfiguring to enable sheeted production as an alternative to running the existing folder. A new VITS sheeter was installed between the press and folder, and a web path was created to allow simple switching from sheeter to folder. At the same time, quality and efficiency enhancements were introduced including a controls system upgrade and color registration system, as well as the replacement of infrared drying with LED UV. The 38-inch (965-mm) wide M-600 web press now features two LED UV units from Air Motion Systems positioned above and below the web.
efficiency, delivering up to 70 percent reduction in energy consumed during this period. The new production flexibility and efficiency of Kinmei's M-600 configuration means the company has been able to expand their print service offering. Whilst the Goss M600 press is over ten years old, according to Shiro Tsukada, President, Kinmei, the press continues to deliver print quality of the highest level - now having been further boosted with the new UV drying system. "We have been extremely impressed with the consistency and longevity of the
M-600 over the years, and we are delighted to see the additional improvements that the new UV dryer has provided giving the press a new lease of life," explained Mr. Tsukada. "With LED-UV drying, not only have we been able to substantially increase productivity, but have also been able to minimize many of the concerns associated with our previous infrared dryer, such as cockling, fluting or brown paper. We are now matching the quality of sheetfed output with perfectly flat sheets, while still benefitting from the much greater speed and productivity of web offset production. We are extremely excited to see the continued benefits of the new installation over the coming
months and years." "Kinmei Printing Co. is a highly valued and long-standing Goss customer, and we are committed to innovating and pushing boundaries to ensure that our customers' products remain at the forefront of the industry in terms of effectiveness and productivity," commented Tim Mercy, Managing Director, Goss Asia Pacific. "We are pleased to have enabled Kinmei to build its print capabilities and deliver best-in-class service to its customers. As word of mouth spreads the news of the massive gains they are achieving, we look forward to being able to help many more of our customers in the same way."
The enhanced configuration has been in production since the end of 2015 and is now fully operational. According to Kinmei, the company has already benefitted from new efficiencies in both time and energy - ultimately improving the bottom line. Since installation, the faster drying process has produced 30,000 finished sheets per hour. The new configuration has also achieved massive improvements in energy

WKS ORDERS ITS SECOND CONTIWEBVISION SYSTEM FOR WASSENBERG FACILITY
W
eb break analysis system is vital tool in optimizing efficiency System diagnostics provide information for future prevention Corporate headquarters receives real-time production data feed Drupa, June 7th 2016 - One of Europe's leading high-volume printers, the WKS Group, has stipulated ContiwebVision web break analysis as an essential component for its latest installation at its facility in Wassenberg, NorthWest Germany. The decision follows the successful introduction of the system on an almost identical press line in 2013. Holger Backes is the WKS project manager for the entire double web installation and was also a key player behind the original specification in 2013. He is convinced that ContiwebVision is the best web break detection technology on today's market and confirms that it is the only sensible choice for the scale of production at Wassenberg. "Each web in our existing press line measures 2250 mm (88.6 inch) wide, giving it the largest paging capacity in the world," Backes explains. "We run the presses simultaneously into one folder at up to 50,000 revolutions per hour and each revolution uses 11.2 m2 (120.6 sqft) of paper. Obviously, with production on this scale we need to ensure our press operators have the very best control capabilities at their fingertips. ContiwebVision allows them to see what is happening to the webs on both levels in real time, precisely pinpointing the source of a disruptive event." While this clarity and ease of use is of crucial importance, it is not the most significant USP for WKS: "Other systems can tell you immediately there is a web break and some also
tell you where it happened, on top of this ContiwebVision is the only system that can tell you why the web break happened and informs the operator how they can prevent it from happening again," comments Backes. "When you're printing 560,000 m2 of paper per hour and it takes an average of 45 minutes to get the presses running again after a stop, this information is the golden ticket." Receiving up to 50 signals from cameras and sensors strategically positioned throughout the press line - from web infeed through splicer, including web severer and web catcher, printing units, dryer, chill stand, turner bars and folder to outfeed - the ContiwebVision web break analysis system in Wassenberg gathers data to continuously monitor web edges, web tension and overall condition of the web. This information enables the system to determine factors including time and location and paper variations. Immediately on detecting the small changes in web tension that indicate a web break, the system correlates all data to generate a report, which can be viewed both locally and remotely via VPN. The ContiwebVision system in Wassenberg, close to the Dutch border, is linked to WKS administrative headquarters 100 km away in Essen. The seamless link means that administration executives are alerted immediately of any web break. If a paper fault is detected, the press operator sends an automatic report to the accounts department with the push of a button, enabling a compensation claim to be submitted to the paper supplier within minutes. "In fact, this scenario is relatively rare in Wassenberg," Holger Backes admits. "We are printing 24/7 on very lightweight stock, typically between
38 | May-June 2016 | Printing Review
40 - 65 gsm so the web breaks are more usually due to the print dynamics such as build-up of ink and tack, water and stresses on the web on its journey through the machine. "Nevertheless, the information we get from the ContiwebVision reports has proved very valuable," he adds. "Our 160-page press here now has the lowest incidence of web breaks of all the eight presses operating in Wassenberg and Essen. On our best day, the press printed 320 tonnes of paper, running non-stop for 24 hours." This record helps to make the repeat investment in an identical press system much less daunting, according to Backes. The new installation, currently underway, is scheduled to be complete by winter 2016, producing more advertising circulars for supermarkets and other retailers. With the new press in full production, output in Wassenberg is expected to grow from 4.2 billion 16-page A4 pieces in 2015 to reach 6.0 billion in 2017.
ARANDELL ADDS SIXTH GOSS SUNDAY PRESS TO HIGH-END CATALOG PRODUCTION PLANT
G
oss International has announced that specialist catalog printer, Arandell of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, will install its sixth Goss Sunday Press in Q4 2016, further expanding its market-leading production capabilities to service new business. With 70 new titles awarded in 2016, the new 57-inch (1450mm), 24pp five-unit Sunday 2000 will enable Arandell to increase its production capacity and continue to deliver the premium-quality products and highstandard level of service it is renowned for. "As a long-standing Goss customer and early adopter of the Sunday technology, adding another Goss Sunday press to our extensive pressroom line-up was a natural step as demand for our products grew again last year," explained Brad Hoffman, president and CEO, Arandell. "Our clients require exacting color and it is our experience that the Sunday Press is one of the few presses in the world that can deliver precise color at the speeds we require."
former folder. The pinless folder reduces the non-print area on the cylinder, allowing Arandell to choose a shorter cutoff and achieve significant paper savings. Arandell also chose the Goss Quick Plate Loading enhancement, which can cut plate changing times by up to 40 percent, and a VITS Rotocut Sheeter. The sheeter provides superior cutting accuracy, an integrated print-to-cut register control and further minimizes paper waste. The Sunday 2000 will also be supplied with a perforator, UV
coater and pre-folder. This will give Arandell the flexibility to produce pressfinished covers as well as signatures. "Any solutions to reduce waste at our production facilities fit perfectly into our environmental policies," added Hoffman. "Being environmentallyresponsible is just one way Arandell is focused on the future. Having been at the helm of this innovative, forward-thinking company for two years now, we have already made some significant operation efficiencies to ensure we stay competitive and continue to provide the best possible service for our customers. "This latest addition to our cutting-edge pressroom is yet another demonstration of our commitment to efficient production processes and our rigorous approach to product quality. Partnering with Goss has been crucial to our success to date and moving forward, bolsters our confidence in the future."

The speeds and high-productivity of the Sunday press can be largely attributed to two pioneering Goss innovations - gapless blankets and pinless folders. Gapless blankets eliminate print defects such as bump streaking, doubling and web flutter, allowing faster printing on wider webs with premium quality. GOSS CONTIWEB ANNOUNCES LATEST INNOVATION TO OPTIMIZE EFFICIENCY IN PRINT DRYING CONTIWEB FLUID APPLICATOR (CFA) OFFERS MORE CONTROL AND IMMEDIATE COST SAVINGS
ADDITIONAL LONGER-TERM SAVINGS THROUGH REDUCED EQUIPMENT WEAR AND MAINTENANCE
N
ow standard or retrofittable on Ecocool and Ecoset dryers Drupa, June 1st 2016 - At drupa 2016, Goss International (Hall 15, stand D51) is showed the latest innovation in its industry-leading range of heatset drying systems. New Contiweb Fluid Applicator (CFA) technology offers significant cost benefits for web offset printers, enhances print performance and productivity, and contributes to a better finished product. Now supplied as an option on new Ecocool and Ecoset models, the CFA system is also available for retrofitting on existing installations of these models and stand-alone silicone application. A demonstration unit on the Goss Contiweb booth guides visitors through its breakthrough approach to the application of silicone oil and water to restore moisture to the printed web and protect against ink picking on the surface of the chill rollers. Silicone is necessary to protect the web from mechanical stress and for better runability though the folder. As well as cutting unnecessary expense, the CFA system offers a solution to issues which might result from consumables commonly used in the drying process, according to Bert Schoonderbeek, Managing Director, Goss Contiweb. "Up until now, printers have been using ‘ready mixed' silicone/water
products," explains Schoonderbeek. "These are provided by a wide array of chemicals and additives in different formulations and standards. They can also cause maintenance issues and contamination in the silicone mix system and folder long term. With the CFA system, we're giving the printer back more control and also cost benefits."
compared to standard silicone emulsions. The result is that the oil is not absorbed by the paper, but stays on top where it offers a much better protection. On average a reduction of 50 % in silicone oil consumption is documented.
Treating the web with a silicone/ water mixture (silicone and remoistening) in one process was developed by Contiweb engineers in 2004, and since then, has become considered by many highquality print professionals to be essential in ensuring best-quality results. The combined process replaces water that has evaporated from the paper during drying to restore the original dimensions of the substrate. It also avoids web shrinkage, as well as reducing instances of cracking, curling or folding, and delivering an overall more forgiving substrate for postpress handling.
The use of pure silicone oil and mixing on demand benefits the performance and long-term maintenance of the applicator and the folder. Applicator, control and drive rollers are all more lubricated, reducing incidence of contamination and improving the lifespan of components.
The new Contiweb Fluid Applicator now introduces the ability to mix pure silicone oil with water on-thefly within one system. By delivering a fresh mix which is used immediately, only a single agent is required as surfactant, which helps to control the delicate balance required for maintaining uniformity and consistency of the web. The oil drops in the mixture are extremely large

In addition to the performance benefits, the new system offers considerable financial gains, including approx. 60 percent savings on the current cost of silicone, which can be equivalent to around •50,000 per year for the consumption associated with a 64-page press. Based on the same production model, the reduction in terms of transportation is just 15 containers versus 80 per year.
With the Ecocool dryer, Contiweb was the first manufacturer to offer a single drying unit with integrated chill rolls, silicone application and optional remoistening. As well as improved ergonomics, it introduced a new level of control of the web in one closed environment, bringing with it significant advantages in quality, efficiency, productivity and cost-effectiveness. "At Goss Contiweb we have always challenged accepted practice, even when a system seems perfect," explains Bert Schoonderbeek. "The new CFA system is the latest development in this process of continuous design development. With every innovation, we aim to deliver more control and measurability to our customers so that they can be assured of consistent, repeatable results of the highest quality."

QuadTech’s new DeltaCam™ makes accurate, inline spectral measurement affordable color temperature control, which creates ideal conditions for precise color measurement. The proprietary design reduces stray light, greatly increasing color measurement accuracy. M1, M0, ISO Compliant Along with strict adherence to ISO standards, Color Measurement with DeltaCam complies to M0 and M1 measurement conditions. Measurement illumination condition M1 was defined to reduce variations in measurement results between instruments due to fluorescence, either by optical brighteners in paper or fluorescence of the imaging colorants or proofing colorants. Easy Integration, Configurability The new system delivers excellent inter-instrument agreement with the most widely used handheld instruments. With an optional web stabilizer (required for film), agreement of less than 1?E00 is achieved.
Addition to product portfolio brings fast, accurate spectrophotometer technology to individual Packaging print houses
Q
uadTech, Inc. announced a breakthrough color technology that will allow more print operations to utilize advanced inline spectral measurement on film, paper, or board. Using a 31-bin spectrophotometer, Color Measurement with DeltaCam offers full spectral measurement for CI flexo, inline flexo, and gravure presses. "Until now, printers have had to
spend a great deal of time in makeready stopping the press many times to measure color and determine if they are within spec," said Isaam Lutfiyya, QuadTech Manager of Business Development. "For an accurate color measurement on a flexo or gravure press, they had to measure a sample that was run at production speed. This increased waste because they had to run the press up to speed, shut it down, remove the sample and measure it offline." Accurate inline color measurement enables printers to reduce time and waste while confidently maintaining color throughout the roll-without the need to wait for a roll change to measure with a handheld device. Color Measurement with DeltaCam enables operators to spot problems early and make corrections quickly, thus minimizing waste, customer complaints, and rebates.
DeltaCam is capable of performing at web speeds up to 610 m/min (2000 ft/min) and on web widths up to 2,200mm (87 inches), reading a single 5mm x 5mm color patch. The imager reads the spectral response of color mark patterns or other defined locations in the image, and the system's software calculates L*a*b* and density values-then calculates the ?E and ?D from the target. The intuitive ICON-based user interface is identical to the performance-proven Color Measurement with SpectralCamTM. The SpectralCam product tier is designed for printers who require faster press speeds and as many as 10-12 simultaneous color measurements; which is ideal for measuring color bars on offset applications. DeltaCam uses advanced LED illumination for extended life and
The web stabilizer uses a patented technique to stabilize the substrate and measure over a certified ceramic backing tile for accurate color measurement-without the need for any mechanical positioning devices that may stretch or otherwise damage the film. Color control and reporting capabilities are available when the DeltaCam system is paired with QuadTech's ColorTrackTM with InkControlTM, also debuted at drupa 2016. "Now you don't have to be a global multinational print house to afford the industry's most advanced inline spectral color measurement," said Mr. Lutfiyya. "As with other technology in the QuadTech portfolio, DeltaCam ensures that no out-of-spec product gets to the customer, and automates the process of achieving precise color accuracy and consistency job-tojob."

drupa confirms industry appetite for streamlining end-to-end conventional print workflows;
CRON confirms new focus for its business drupa attention validates CRON strategy for expanded market influence EZcolor digital inking cited as show highlight for VLF were also very well received - so well in fact that the 5,000 Flexo CTP brochures we took to drupa weren't enough! We are now keen to maintain the momentum of offering both incremental and dramatic improvements to traditional print workflows. "Our future focus will examine each and every part of conventional print workflows to determine where enhancements, improvements and efficiencies can be made in order to make our customers more competitive. drupa has confirmed that there's huge demand and scope for this activity worldwide. People always debate the real focus of drupa shows - packaging drupa, digital drupa, inkjet drupa - but I believe this show was aptly defined by one UK journalist who said that ‘print got its mojo back at drupa '16'. We are happy to be part of that process." "True Image. True Color. True Print”, CRON’s new strategy vindicated by drupa success
F
ollowing a successful drupa 2016 with strong CTP sales and massive interest in the diversification of its product portfolio, CRON has created a new focus within its business to develop products that optimise efficiency and profitably throughout conventional offset printing applications.
"drupa '16 signalled a revitalisation of print on many fronts," says Derek Sizer, CRON Regional Director EMEAR. "Technology was still at the show's core, but it was the application of diverse technologies and what they can deliver that created the real interest in the halls." On the CRON stand, the company's EZcolor digital inking was a clear winner with customers, sales partners and the media alike. The EZcolor system breathes new life into sheetfed offset, not only reducing waste and enhancing quality but also bringing down the point at which short-runs become profitable. EZcolor, which can be retrofitted to any offset press, was

just one of six new products shown by CRON at drupa, reflecting a conscious step out of CRON's traditional CTP market and into the broader fields of offset press optimization, plate production and flexo packaging. "Our strategy to expand our product portfolio was proven the right way to go at drupa," confirms Sizer. "The industry showed a renewed appetite for improving existing print installations, rather than always chasing totally new solutions, which require significant capital investment. In addition to EZcolor, our new ‘greener' plate technologies and Flexo CTP, as well as new automation
In addition to the ‘usual' drupa crowd, CRON also greeted a special group to its stand. Led by Chairman Dr. Gerhard Papke, the Parliament Group NRW-China - an organisation that promotes cooperation between the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany and China - were also very welcome guests: "It was an honour to meet Dr. Papke and his group," Sizer adds, "drupa is obviously a huge event with a lot of Chinese participation, so we were delighted that he made time to visit CRON. As a truly international company, we're currently looking to expand our existing European headquarters in Düsseldorf possibly even with a view to adding manufacturing in the long term - so we had some interesting discussions."
