All in Print China 2016: Connecting the World with Printing 6TH ALL IN PRINT IS ON THE RIGHT TRACK All in Print is charted for success: roughly one year before it kicks off on 18 October 2016 more than 400 renowned companies from the international print suppliers industry have already confirmed their participation at the 6th edition of All in Print, already occupying over 80,000 m2 at this early point in time. The list of exhibitors includes such global players as Dupont, Daetwyler Graphics, Epson, Siemens, Asian brands like Daqiao Packaging, Focusight, Mclantis Group, Masterwork, STS Machinery, UP Group, Weng Cheng Machinery, Yilee, Yoco and the Austrian upstream supplier B&R Industrial

Automation, to name but a few. Joint participations from the USA and Germany have also signed up to exhibit. According to studies carried out by SmithersPira, Asia is by far the world’s most important growth region for the printing industry. By 2018 Asia’s market share in the global print suppliers industry will rise from 38.8 % in 2013 to 43 %. All in Print is the key to these important future markets,” and goes on to say; “fortunately key players like Bobst, Canon, Fujifilm, Komori, Konica Minolta, Ricoh and Xerox have already booked exhibition

space at the forthcoming All in Print. This is definitely further confirmation of the relevance of All in Print.” Under the heading “Discover the Future of Printing” All in Print 2016 in Shanghai will bring some changes in its conceptual cornerstones: the duration of the trade fair will be prolonged from four to five days (18 to 22 October) while its frequency was already increased to every two years as early as 2014. In addition to this, the six exhibition halls in Shanghai will all be themed – “All in Press”, “All in Digital”, “All in Label”, “All in Packaging”, “All in Creativity” and “All in E-business”. Over 700

national and international exhibitors will present - on a total 90,000 m2 of exhibition space. The exhibitors’ ranges are rounded off by a technical supporting programme boasting well over 30 forums and seminars. The Messe Düsseldorf Group and its flagship fairs drupa (No. 1 for print and crossmedia solutions) and interpack (International Trade Fair for Packaging Machines and Appliances, Packaging Materials and Auxiliaries, Confectionery Machines) develop promising growth markets throughout the world with the help of regional trade fairs.

Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC-3D for new TKS in India

M

athrubhumi Printing & Publishing is one of the largest newspaper publishers in the Indian state of Kerala. One of its fourteen printing plants, in Calicut, has three Japanese TKS printing presses. Recently, the organisation decided to expand its production facilities with a fourth new TKS. Through effective communication with the customer, the printing press manufacturer and various agencies, Q.I. Press Controls was able to present Mathrubhumi and TKS with a convincing argument for the mRC-3D colour register. The result: Mathrubhumi asked TKS to have the new printing press fitted with the Q.I. Press Controls’ system. Seeing as this was the first time Q.I. Press Controls has worked together with Mathrubhumi and TKS, the organisation is hopeful of a successful partnership. Q.I. Press Controls came into contact with Mathrubhumi and TKS almost at the same time. In India, Q.I.

Press Controls and its local agent Krause Biagosch India had been constantly seeking new leads at Mathrubhumi. During a visit to the plant in Calicut, Vijay Pandya, managing director of QIPC – EAE India, gave a presentation in which he demonstrated that Mathrubhumi would be able to work more efficiently and effectively using the mRC-3D. It wasn’t completely by chance that Mathrubhumi was looking to buy a new printing press at the time. In Japan, Q.I. Press Controls had for a long time been pursuing new leads at TKS. At the very moment Mathrubhumi opted for the new TKS press, contacts between Q.I. Press Controls and TKS were so well entrenched thanks to the hard work of Krause Biagosch that TKS consented to Mathrubhumi’s request to install the TKS with Q.I. Press Controls’ colour register. Thanks to the excellent working partnership, twelve mRC-3D cameras for colour register were installed on the new TKS printing presses with

six towers and two folders. The cameras are fitted with Automatic Ink Mist Shields (AIMS). According to Mathrubhumi, the organisation plumped for Q.I. Press Controls because of its local support and service, the wellestablished relationship and the possibility of having the system upgraded. The mRC-3D brings about significant savings in waste and offers a fully flexible system. Mathrubhumi has expressed an interest in various optional extras, such as cut-off control, and at a later stage plans to invest in the IDS-3D colour control. Vijay Pandya is optimistic the order will mark the beginning of a longterm partnership. He believes that, when Krause Biagosch India continues its hard work, the three already existing TKS printing presses will also be equipped with Q.I. Press Controls in the future. His conclusion: “Once again, the name of Q.I. Press Controls has become associated with one of the leading printing companies in India. It gives

us a great sense of pride.” About the Mathrubhumi Printing & Publishing Co. Ltd.: Mathrubhumi is one of the leading newspaper groups in Kerala. The company publishes the Mathrubhumi Daily and ten different magazines in the Malayalam language. The design concept of products, the reasons for their selection and features of products are as follows: Design Concepts of “bizhub 367/

“bizhub 367/287/227” and “bizhub Remote Access” follow bizhub series' unified concept “INFOPalette,” and set the goal both in achieving total design and strong brand for products, after-sales support and promotional materials. The bizhub 367/287/227 have operation panel smaller than the more high-speed upper models. On the panel, text and multi-touch icons are widened properly while equal visibility and operability are kept: they are easy for users to understand and operate its multiple functions. bizhub Remote Access enables not only remote operation from almost anywhere in the office, but also comfortable and efficient operational performance by displaying the MFP panel screen on the user's favorite mobile device. Comments from Screening Committee of JDP As the collective design concept for bizhub series MFPs, “INFO-Palette” is utilized. Since user contact points are concentrated to symbolic whiteplate motif on the MFPs' front side, its contrast to the black body is intuitively recognized by users as operation and control component. Regarding accessibility, remote operation from mobile devices that are used on daily basis, easiness to

Goss announces Omnicolor II upgrade for industry’s leading 16-page web press Potential boost for more than 400 M-600 presses worldwide Significant reduction in start-up waste possible Eliminates component obsolescence Short installation with measurable ROI

G

oss has launched an upgrade for the M-600 press to support the press model's competitive edge in color control and eliminate potential obsolescence issues. Now the standard on all new M-600 press installations, the benefits of Omnicolor II press controls include start-up waste lowered by anything from 20 up to 50 percent as well as significant reductions in turnaround time. The new features of the Omnicolor II upgrade are purpose-designed to achieve a more automated process to support the press operator. The ability to automate press setting direct from CIP3 data is a key area that reduces a three-stage process down to a single step, resulting in less waiting time and eliminating error potential. The significant waste reduction is enabled by a range of system improvements, including: Accurate pre-setting of the ink keys via the pre-press interface (CIP3 file) Quicker reaction of the ink keys and repetitive positioning Ability to move all ink keys simultaneously;

Ink and paper selection - up to 10 papers and inks, to optimize the presetting. New functionality such as Ink Tracking and Color Boost, enables the fastest possible process to achieve good copies. Auto learning - by saving all running job settings, the Omnicolor will, job after job, fine tune the presetting by taking into account ink, paper and coverage specifications for optimum results. Following a one-day press audit, Goss engineers require full press access for between two and four days to install the low-investment upgrade on existing M-600 systems. Underpinning the Omnicolor II development are latest-generation hardware components of the Goss Omnicon controls system proven for controlling production on even the largest commercial press systems, such as the 96-page Sunday 5000 presses installed at Polestar, UK. In sharing this technology, Omnicolor II benefits from latest measures in preventative obsolescence, hard disk reliability and wide-ranging connectivity, such

as via VPN. M-600 users can now also enjoy easier operation via a large touchscreen display and HMI software, as well as systems architecture and connectivity designed specifically for modern, industrialized production. To help customers evaluate the potential gains from an Omnicolor II upgrade, Goss is using an ROI calculator to provide individualized expected savings.

"Customers can see the potential pay-off, whatever their current production model may be," comments Rutger Jansen, head of customer service, Goss International Europe. "Together, we plot in their average number of jobs and current makeready figures against the investment cost and the new figures they can reliably expect. I can't claim that the calculation methodology is groundbreaking, but it certainly helps convince our customers that the Omnicolor II upgrade is."

Sandhills Publishing chooses Goss again for efficiency and sustainability Eight-unit Sunday 2000 press will boost output and paper savings New Pacesetter 2200 saddlestitcher will maximize productivity gains Ensuring environmental sustainability of operation is central to the decision

S

andhills Publishing, headquar tered in Lincoln (NE), USA, has decided to re-invest with Goss International to double production output and extend efficiencies at its new highperformance print and bindery facility. A Goss Sunday 2000 press and Pacesetter 2200 saddlestitcher will enable Sandhills to fulfil a greater proportion of its print requirements more cost-effectively and sustainably through the company's own rigorous in-house processes. The eight-unit, two web, 16-page Goss Sunday 2000 press scheduled for delivery in May 2016 is almost identical to one installed in 2007 and, like its counterpart, will be configured in a stacked layout for operational ease. The press line will include a Goss Contiweb FD splicer and an Ecocool dryer with integrated pollution control. Sporting a new 22¼-inch (545 mm) cut-off, the new press will further enhance paper savings delivered through the extended printable area of gapless blankets and pinless folders. These efficiency features were a key requirement for Sandhills Publishing as the company has a policy of advanced environmental responsibility. Its commitment to this purpose has resulted in a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold rating for its Data Center, which houses Sandhills' servers and was constructed largely

from recycled and reclaimed materials. According to Chris Lee, Sandhills purchasing manager, the overall "comfort level" of press operators with the equipment was equally significant. "Our pressmen know this technology inside out, not only how to get the very best print quality and productivity out of it on a daily basis but also through handling all the routine maintenance and servicing in-house. This familiarity will ensure the most efficient and seamless start-up with the new capabilities." The level of expertise and familiarity with Goss technology among the Sandhills press crews is evidenced through daily performance statistics. The facility prints 24/7, five days a week, producing an average of 912,000 magazines per week on the existing Sunday 2000 press. Average makeready waste stands at six percent and the average lifespan of each gapless blanket is more than 60 million impressions. Sandhills has also been impressed with performance from its existing Goss Pacesetter 1600 stitcher, resulting in the decision to install another Pacesetter saddlestitcher. Scheduled for delivery in March 2016, the new Pacesetter 2200 is capable of delivering up to 22,000 stitched books per hour. It also allows on-the-fly hopper adjustments and offers advanced selective binding and inkjet personalization. "There's no point installing the best

press technology and not matching the capability at output," states Lee. "This installation will be part of a truly state-of-the-art operation," comments Goss director of commercial sales, Tim van Driessche. "Sandhills Publishing has established an outstanding business model, which continues to go from strength to strength. The excellence of its production capabilities is fundamental to this success, supported by a policy of ongoing reinvestment in the company and its team members. I expect the integration of the new equipment and the changeover to double the production capacity will be almost seamless." Founded in 1978, Sandhills Publishing serves the trucking, agriculture, construction, heavy machinery, aviation, and technology industries with a diverse range of products and services from wellestablished trade publications and

websites to hosted technology services. The company publishes around twenty different titles in a variety of localized editions, distributed principally in North and Latin America. Built in 2011, Sandhills' LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold-rated Data Center utilizes a closed-loop geothermal heating and cooling system, solar power, and motion sensor technologies that improve water and energy efficiencies. "LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality." -U.S. Green Building Council.

Goss announces new Contiweb modular product lines for digital web presses New unwinders and rewinders introduce proven tension control technology to digital web printing Different levels of automation provide scalable solutions Applications including labels and packaging will benefit from Contiweb 99.7% splice performance

G

oss is introducing its Contiweb hallmark of tension excellence to a new market by launching a range of six unwinder/splicers and rewinders developed specifically to address digital web printing requirements. Available immediately, both the unwinder and the rewinder series are designed and engineered to be entirely modular, providing customers with an easy path to full automation at either end of the press line. Developed at the Goss Contiweb facility in the Netherlands, renowned for the supply of splicers and dryers to the world's premier web offset printers for almost 40 years, the new product lines have been designed to equal the Contiweb signature splice performance of 99.7 percent for digital webs. Bert Schoonderbeek, managing director at Goss Contiweb says the development recognizes the growth and potential in digital web printing. "After many years refining and perfecting product design to ensure efficiency and repeatable high quality for web offset printers, we're now seeing a similar need within the digital web community," he comments. "The increasing variety of installations and applications is creating a relentless demand from print service

providers for technologies that advance their competitive edge. The ability to master web tension and to continually improve productivity is rapidly becoming critical to success." Available in two web widths 770 mm (30") and 1100 mm (42"), the ‘CD' range of splicer/unwinders and the ‘CR' range of rewinders share features that facilitate simple set-up, integration and day-to-day operation. These include floor-level loading and unloading of paper reels; unwinding/rewinding in either direction; as well as motorized reel side-lay adjustment; all of which can be monitored throughout via an HMI screen on the unit. Each model is shaftless and uses pneumatically expanding core chucks driven by low-noise electric motors, which provides an added element of sustainability since energy generated feeds back into the electrical circuit. The Goss Contiweb CD Series of unwinder/splicers Drawing on Contiweb's 40 years' experience in web tension technology, the ‘CD' series has been engineered to ensure accuracy and repeatability at every stage of the digital web infeed process, regardless of operator experience or familiarity with web-fed production.

14 | November-December 2015 | Printing Review

CD-W unwinder with manual, stationary splicing CD-S Stop/Go double unwinder with semi-automatic splice - allows the operator to unload, load and prepare for splicing while production is underway; facilitates a minimum stoppage cycle time per splice. CD-N fully automatic splicer with non-stop reel changeover - uses renowned Contiweb ‘zero-speed' festoon technology to splice running web and new reel while press continues at full speed The models come with a range of options including additional levels of infeed control, web guidance, remote operation through the central control system, and remote diagnosis via VPN. The Goss Contiweb CR Series of rewinders All models in the Contiweb Digital Series of rewinders have been developed specifically to rewind reels at speed without the loss of any printed copies. Transfer may be between reels of different width and paper thickness, and repeated transfers from first to second position, and vice versa, are also possible. CR-W single rewinder - reel change and web transfer to the new core is

manual while the press remains stationary CR-S Stop/Go double rewinder with semi-automatic web transfer - allows unloading and preparation of cores during ongoing production; facilitates a minimum stoppage time for reel change and web transfer to the new core CR-N Non-stop rewinder with automatic reel changeover unloading of fully wound reels and

preparation of cores is possible during production; automatic splice can be made at full press speed, at any reel diameter The three versions can also be fitted with a slitter, and are available with optional extras such as integrated electronic web tension control at outfeed, web guides, central console operability and remote diagnostics. "Whether the customer is new to web-fed print production or an old

hand, we feel very confident that with the CD and CR product lines we are equipping digital print providers with the very best technology to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency from their system," concludes Schoonderbeek. CRON-Europe shows its new flexo CTP at LABELEXPO Europe ď€łď€ A highly cost-effective route into flexo CTP

A

s a natural extension to its comprehensive range of offset CTP products, CRON-Europe is showing its new state-of-the-art flexo CTP device at LABELEXPO in Brussels - 29 September to 2 October 2015. With many of the features of its sister offset products, which now total over 3000 machines sold, the new FX-36 Flexo offers a feature-rich but very cost-effective route into digital flexo plate production. Its high resolution of up to 6000 dpi and excellent dot quality make the FX36 ideal for a number of flexo applications from labels to blue-chip cosmetic packaging. According to Derek Sizer, Regional Director, CRON-Europe, "With our latest CRON CTP devices we have focused on exceptional quality and high value. These improvements have been applied to our new FX36 which can deliver an exceptional on-plate tonal range. Our high level of dot accuracy means that flexo printers will be able to compete for packaging work that was normally considered the domain of offset and gravure." The advantages of the FX36 are best understood by a review of the advanced technology which is present at every stage of plate production. Firstly, a new pneumatic plate handling system ensures smooth transfer of flexo plates into the imaging system. The plate handling has been designed specifically to handle the thicker flexo plates (up to 4mm) with fault-free and fast operation. The FX36 then uses the latest linear magnetic drive scanning system to deliver the accuracy required for high resolution exposure up to 6000 dpi. Friction free, it eliminates imaging issues often experienced with other alternatives "The improvements to the exposure system do not stop there," states Sizer. "The imaging head itself has also been redesigned to incorporate liquid cooling and the shortest possible path between the lasers and the plate surface. These features deliver the stability of imaging that is required for ultimate dot accuracy." Providing exceptional imaging quality on a wide range of plate types, the TF-36 brings major productivity advantages to flexo printers. "The packaging industry is increasingly under pressure to shorten turnaround times to respond to special offers, new lines and improved styling. Flexo CTP is one weapon in the armory to meet this need. But quality and costs are also under pressure. We believe that the new CRON FX-36 will enable flexo printers to respond to these pressures and extend their capabilities at a reasonable cost and minimum disruption," concludes Sizer.

audience," explains John Garrett, owner, Community Impact Newspaper. "To be heard over other news channels, you have to up your game. This means providing a news source that is highly-targeted, provides quality content and has a good reputation for accurate, reliable information. This is where print is stronger than digital media, and Community Impact Newspaper is proof of that."

VERSIONED PUBLICATIONS IDENTIFIED AS OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH IN-HOUSE PRINT CAPABILITIES TO PROVIDE INCREASED QUALITY CONTROL AND PRODUCTION FLEXIBILITY Community Impact Newspaper of Pflugerville, Texas, has today confirmed its investment in a Goss Magnum Compact. The highlyautomated Magnum Compact press will be central to the company's new, purpose-built printing operation, designed to meet an ever-increasing demand for this regionalized, community newspaper, Scheduled for installation in Q2

growth since its launch in 2005. The model for a publication that features relevant, local news, continues to increase in popularity in the regions it currently serves, and owners, John and Jennifer Garrett, are confident it can be replicated elsewhere. "The news industry is a very competitive marketplace, with online and print competing for the same

Shortly after the husband and wife duo moved to Austin, they recognized a gap in the market for an informative publication designed for local citizens. However, drawing on their extensive experience within the newspaper industry, they understood that people would not pay for subscriptions and decided to mail it for free. Garrett continues, "Gone are the days of people paying for news, so in order to be profitable you have to ensure that your publication has high-quality content. This ensures that advertisers recognize its value to readers. In addition, providing a regionalized, versioned newspaper that reaches a very specific, local target audience is crucial. This approach has served us well to date but we continue to look for ways to enhance our paper to provide an even better product in the future. To take the next step, we need to bring high-quality printing in-house and increase our versioning capabilities.

That's where the Goss Magnum Compact comes in."

critical factors that led us to choose this press."

With simplified operation and runlength flexibility, the Magnum Compact enables users to print a wide range of products competitively. The ability to print costeffective runs as short as 500 1,000 copies provides printers not only with an alternative to digital print, but an economical way of handling runs up to 250,000 copies, giving unparalleled production flexibility and a powerful competitive advantage.

"However, we knew very little about print production when we started exploring this opportunity," explains Garrett. "We researched the level of investment required and the technology on the market, and this is when we started the conversation with Goss.

The Goss Autoplate technology delivers fast makereadies and enables successive jobs to be run with complete plate changes within two minutes.

Community Impact Newspaper recognized that by managing versioning and targeted inserts at the production level, the company can not only better control the product

Seeing their presses really helped us to visualize how we could leverage this technology. The print house we have used to date uses Goss technology, so we knew the print quality was of a high standard. However, other features, such as its suitability for short runs and versioning, automatic plate loading and quick changeovers were also

This is accomplished with minimum waste and contributes to maximum press uptime. Plates that have been removed may be reused for repeat production of shorter run jobs, further extending the value proposition of the press. Community Impact's press configuration will include three Contiweb FB pasters, three four-high Magnum compact towers and a Goss N45 folder with quarter folder, ensuring

superior, crease free folding capabilities."While we think that the press will be well utilized, we are confident that there is plenty of room for growth. We know the decision to bring print in-house isn't typical for publishers, but we have a market-leading product and are certain of the many opportunities available - just within what we are doing today, let alone when we start to grow. "Even so, it's been a daunting process! But Goss really helped us to understand the technology. This is the biggest investment we have ever made and it's nice to do it with people we respect. Goss have made the entire process enjoyable, and this is definitely the start of a great partnership," Garrett concludes.

The packaging of tomorrow – experience the future, now

O

ne of the key highlight topics at drupa 2016 will be packaging production. Papers with outstanding sensory appeal combined with excellent finishing techniques turn packaging into first class advertising media. Electronic displays and sensors make packaging intelligent; digital printing permits personalisation and versioning. As a result, according to current forecasts the packaging market will increase to 975 billion euros by 2018. A separate special show, Packaging Touchpoint, reflects this market relevance. "Our aim is to use the visionary

Touchpoint to identify potential in packaging design and production and address important vertical markets", says Sabine Geldermann, Director of drupa, highlighting the idea behind this part of the show. Packaging Touchpoint is aimed at brands, packaging designers and service providers already operating in the packaging sector or who want to enter the sector. This special forum in Hall 12 is being designed and implemented in close collaboration with the European Packaging Design Association (epda), Europe's leading association

of brands and packaging agencies. "We will be covering the whole spectrum of the packaging world: technical/functional requirements, cultural and ethical considerations, cost-effectiveness and efficiency, the wide range of substrates through to the technologies used", explains Claudia Josephs, Project Manager at epda. To be in a position to fulfil the special needs of the various user industries better, Packaging Touchpoint is divided into four "future labs" – specifically into "food & beverage", "non-food", "pharma"

and "cosmetics". Successful practical examples as well as potential future production solutions will inspire visitors and leave a longlasting impression. A special programme in the Forum itself will cover very specific topics. The Packaging Touchpoint gives companies from the packaging design and production sector the opportunity to present their innovative technologies, inspiring solutions and visionary concepts. This offering is free of charge for drupa exhibitors. As the number of partners is very limited, immediate registration via epda is required.

Heidelberg on course after first half of financial year 2015/2016 with sales and result up on previous year Further progress with strategic reorientation | Sales after six months climb to •1.162 billion | EBITDA excluding special items increase to •79 million

PROCEEDS FROM SALE OF HEADQUARTERS IN HEIDELBERG POSTED AS INCOME IN SECOND HALF-YEAR

Outlook for year as a whole: Sights firmly set on achieving targets for year

H

eidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) systematically implemented the Group’s strategic reorientation in the first half of financial year 2015/2016 (April 1 to September 30, 2015) and made further progress during this period. The growth areas – services and digital – have undergone considerable expansion, while structures and processes have been made even leaner in the sheetfed business. The takeover of the Printing Systems

Group (PSG) increased service and consumables sales as planned. The five subsidiaries have been fully integrated into the Heidelberg sales organization and the management structure adapted accordingly. Half of the planned additional sales of some •100 million from the takeover have been generated after six months. Heidelberg is planning further acquisitions in this growth segment in the future and is expecting services and consumables to account for around 50 percent of Group sales in the medium term. The greater focus of the research and development budget on digital printing is also becoming increasingly apparent. One example is the successful sales launch of the company’s new digital label press for the packaging market. Heidelberg has also succeeded in winning

over a German start-up company from the food industry for its latest development in the field of 4D printing. Unveiling the first industrial sheetfed digital press at the drupa trade show next year will mark the next milestone in the digital strategy.

Together with the Print Media Center Packaging, Wiesloch-Walldorf now boasts the industry’s largest demonstration center for commercial and packaging printing anywhere in the world.

As for its sheetfed business, the company continued the planned efficiency measures with the aim of increasing flexibility and boosting future profitability. Full implementation by the end of the financial year will further improve the profitability of the sheetfed business, above all in the second half-year. The relocation of company headquarters and the Print Media Center Commercial from Heidelberg to WieslochWalldorf marks the completion of a key structural measure. This will speed up processes in the future and further reduce annual operating costs for the sites.

The sale of the vacant administrative premises in Heidelberg has been contractually agreed and is expected to be recognized in profit or loss in the course of the financial year. “We are systematically implementing our growth strategy. New business models and a dynamic portfolio have led to a significant increase in sales,” said Dirk Kaliebe, CFO and Deputy CEO of the company. “The reorientation of Heidelberg has also made us more flexible, which means we are better able to respond to market fluctuations and can further improve profitability,” he added.

WKS Group Opts for manroland web systems For Relocation of Second-Hand LITHOMAN

A

dditional upgrade of the 48page press with A3 and A4 delivery and PECOM connection The WKS Druckholding GmbH with facilities in Essen and Wassenburg, Germany, has been running eight LITHOMAN presses. Now the 48page press at the printing site in Essen has been replaced by a second-hand LITHOMAN with also 48 pages from Fetsund/Oslo. As partner and expert for the challenging relocation, WKS intentionally opted for manroland web systems. Main reason was to guarantee a professional and reliable handling. Furthermore, the folding components of the press were upgraded and a PECOM connection with the new manroland web systems PECOM server was realized. This assures the best possible production stability and highest quality. Meeting the demands of the future – already today: this request was reached, when the WKS group decided to cooperate with the Westend Druckereibetriebe GmbH in Essen and the Kraft-Schlötels GmbH in Wassenberg. Since then, two quality conscious and high performing printers form one of Europe’s leading web offset printing companies with approximately 335 employees.

WKS produces not only with commercial web offset presses ranging from 32 to 80 pages. At the plant in Wassenberg the world’s largest heatset commercial press is installed – a two-web 80-page LITHOMAN with a total of web width of 4.5 meters which is the equivalent of a 160-page press. Therefore they count on manroland web systems. And therefore they invested in a second-hand LITHOMAN with additional service upgrades. Old LITHOMAN – New Features Unlike the old 48-page LITHOMAN that has been replaced by the investment, the new press contains numerous upgrades as e.g. stitchers or a retrofit of the drive system. In Essen it has been additionally retrofitted with components for A3 and A4 delivery. Moreover, the new LITHOMAN was completely connected to the PECOM PressManager (PPM) from manroland web systems. The retrofit secures the availability of the press. New functions like the PressMonitor for an ideal data management, a perfect visual displaying and an in-time reporting, guarantee an easy processing. Two Strong Partners

The company’s core competency is high quality web offest printing. Fast, high performing, absolutely reliable in matters of production and with a maximum of flexibility – this is the guiding principle of the printing company.

“The complexity of the relocation of the LITHOMAN was subject for an exact planning, a comprehensive preparation and a professional handling“, Frank Kreisel, Area Sales Manager at manroland web systems explains. “As all these components had been given, the installation could be completed very fast.

As a company for which futureorientation is on the daily agenda, WKS opts for fully developed technologies and a huge machinery.

Due to this, the production on the relocated press could start as quickly as possible.” To meet the requirements, the A3 and A4

deliveries for example had been retrofitted before the press was relocated. The upgrade was made directly in Essen. The employees of manroland web systems offered a perfect and professional project management – from the dismantling and the transport from Norway to Essen, via the assembling and the re-commissioning of the press. There have been several reasons for the decision of WKS to choose manroland web systems as their partner for this project. Dr. Ralph Dittmann, Managing Director at the WKS Druckholding GmbH, is convinced: “We were thinking for a while about the partner we choose to enter this new territory of installing a second-hand press for the first time. For this project, a secondhand press had to be demounted in Norway, imported to the EU, transported 1,400 km to Essen, equipped with numerous retrofits and upgrades and integrated to the production environment of WKS. And this as quick as possible and without missing deadlines. Against this background, we intentionally decided to opt for manroland web systems. The engineers there are professionals – they now the press and they provided the best solutions for every upcoming problem. They also had a complete access to all necessary data and functions. Two additional and decisive factors were that manroland web systems could show numerous experiences in press relocations and that the company could realize an upgrade with A3 and A4 deliveries. Thanks to this investment, we can now serve our customers optimally. I am certain that we opted for the best partner for our project.“

French revolution in the pressroom N

ew digital printing workflow with FoldLine to produce the weekly newspaper L´Observateur Starting in late 2015, the Imprimerie de l’Avesnois/Digitaprint printing house in northern France will digitally produce the weekly newspaper L´Observateur. This will allow the regional newspaper to present local contents that are more relevant to its readers as well as advertising offers tailored to local retail zones. manroland web systems is in charge of the workflow integration and the inline folder finishing with FoldLine – from the printed web directly to the finished newspaper. This new production line will allow Imprimerie de l’Avesnois/Digitaprint headquartered in Avesnes-sur-Help to become a pioneer among printing houses and print service providers across Europe. The new digital printing workflow includes a digital rotary press, a Kodak Prosper 6000 C, which will commence operation in fall 2015, ensuring the production of several local newspapers. These include in particular publications by the Publishing Group Sogemedia, along with a few publications by its project partner: Le Journal de la Haute Marne, La Semaine de l’Allier, and Liberté Hebdo. For the finishing, the printing company has invested in a FoldLine with the integration software “WorkflowBridge” with an integrated RIMA stacker. Alwin Stadler, Vice President Digital Printing at manroland web systems, explains why the introduction of digital printing is a model for success: “The customer appreciates

our finishing systems with an industrial dimension. We are glad that such a renowned printing and publishing group as Sogmedia will apply our FoldLine and WorkflowBridge to realign its operations. This shows what our finishing solutions can accomplish for digital printing lines.” The Imprimerie de l’Avesnois previously produced its local weekly newspapers on a Harris coldset rotary press. Hyperlocal: the new key to success The strategic significance of the investment to the printing sector is underlined by the fact that Hubert Pedurand advised the Imprimerie de l’Avesnois. The UNIIC (L’Union Nationale des Industries de l’Impression et de la Communication) and its research department INIGRAPH are greatly committed to the implementation of future-ready technologies. H. Pedurand outlines his vision: “The aim is to introduce innovations that will overcome the limitations of the printing sector. These include a drop in newspaper circulations, limited customer orientation, a lack of creativity, and disruptions of the production chain. It is important to give print products a new future.” Given their strong local focus, the Observateur, and all local weekly newspapers aim to be as close as possible to readers and advertisers. This is where digital production comes in to create more sophisticated and customized newspapers. Gilles Mevel, Managing Director of Imprimerie de l’Avesnois/Digitaprint describes the expectations of digital workflow and FoldLine: “The aim of our customers is to offer hyper-local editorial contents and advertising tailored to their target groups. This business model offers the printing sector a new chance. It will gradually

evolve in the direction of customized printing products. Within this process, FoldLine ensures an efficient newspaper production process. Flexible ranges and formats that are fully integrated into the workflow will allow us to print quickly and efficiently in the future.”

For the Sogemedia group, this substantial investment in its subsidiary in charge of printing constitutes the industrial implementation of a corporate project termed Transmutation. Its major goal is the complete modernization of its editorial and commercial offers and thus the

entire range of work processes and means of production. Jean-Pierre Vittu de Kerraoul, president of the Sogemedia group, points out: “The drop in circulation of print products is not primarily based on paper as a medium, but on the lack of editorial significance. The possibilities offered by

digitalization open up wonderful new opportunities for printing, provided that it can control the variables in such a way that the customers receive their individual newspapers “on demand”. Our challenge is to produce a newspaper for everyone that is still tailored to each individual reader.”

Two Indian multimedia companies once again opt for Q.I. Press Controls are delivering exceptional results: quality is consistently good and start-up times for presses have been significantly reduced. The expectations are that the system being installed will match the results of those already in situ. Vijay Pandya, Managing Director of QIPC – EAE India, has every confidence in the new Q.I. Press Controls system: “We will continue to provide the same levels of service that Jagran Prakashan is accustomed to from us. With the technology we have, I am convinced that the product will more than meet the requirements of the organisation. Continued investment is this already excellent relationship will result in mutual benefits well into the future.” Lokmat Media’s order for its printing sites in Nashik and Mumbai, India.

M

ultimedia companies Jagran Prakashan and Lokmat Media have once again opted for Q.I. Press Controls. Both companies ordered mRC-3D cameras for different printing sites. The orders, which confirms the good relationship that already exists between Q.I. Press Controls and the two companies, signals a positive outcome for all three organisations. Jagran Prakashans order for its printing sites in Allahabad and Muzaffarpur, India. Over the last three years, Q.I. Press Controls has installed various systems in the numerous plants owned by Jagran Prakashan. The IRS, the mRC+ and the mRC-3D are fitted on over 100 towers. This time, Jagran Prakashan placed an order for the installation of the mRC-3D for its plants in Allahabad and Muzaffarpur. Both locations house a Manugraph Cityline Express with six towers and

one folder. Q.I. Press Controls plans to equip these printing presses with a total of 24 cameras for colour register. The cameras will be fitted with AIMS (Automatic Ink Mist Shields) to keep the system dirt-free. Jagran Prakashan has made it clear that this will not be the last order it places with Q.I. Press Controls. In the future, the organisation aims to install an upgrade on the systems with additional functions, such as inkductor control, IQM (Intelligent Quality Management) and even colour control. Jagran Prakashan’s adherence to Q.I. Press Controls’ solutions is primarily down to its reliable systems which help bring about high-quality printed products. The organisation evidently maintains good relations with the QIPC – EAE India team. The systems currently operating in other plants

The two consecutive orders of Lokmat Media consists of 12 mRC3D cameras for colour register and cut-off control for their location in Nashik and 10 cameras for their location in Mumbai. All cameras will be equipped with Automatic Ink Mist Shields (AIMS). The system will be installed on two new Orient newspaper presses present on the different printing sites. Due to the experience with Q.I. Press Controls, the media group expects a smooth functioning mRC-3D. After the installation, the system makes sure that the organisation reduces its waste. This is the effect of a shorter makeready period and a constant good quality of colour register and cut-off register of the product. Vijay Pandya is very content with the order. He states: “We at QIPC – EAE India work hard to build and maintain good relationships with our customers. The cooperation between Lokmat Media and Q.I. Press Controls goes way back. The Five Biggest Bottom-line Killers in Packaging by Stephan Doppelhammer, QuadTech Market Manager for Packaging high enough? Are your finishing lines causing bottlenecks? How close to the manufacturer’s target speeds is your equipment running? Where are your other “pain points”? Are you working with a specialist, professional supplier to address them?

T

he market pressures that today’s packaging converters face are greater than ever, and what used to be high value print is increasingly commoditised. If new investment needs to be deferred, taking remedial measures in the meantime will make a difference – even advancing the date when you can invest. While this list is not definitive and individual companies may have different priorities, by partnering with a leading automated control systems supplier such as QuadTech, packaging converters can address these issues—positively impacting customer satisfaction and profitability. 1. Color consistency: This is essential when dealing with major brand managers. Color needs to be consistent on press, press-to-press, and at multiple locations. Failure to match brand colors accurately is a certain job-loser. In today’s market, the only sure way of reliably delivering accurate color is by automating the process. The stakes are simply too high to do otherwise. 2. Long make-ready times: While flexo plate or cylinder engraving

production is difficult to accelerate, good planning can ensure that plates/cylinders are on hand when needed. Other make-ready timewasters to check include: Are you mounting plates as quickly and accurately as you could? Do you cut expensive substrate waste and maximize press production by achieving perfect color and register quickly? As long run jobs should take no longer to set up than shorter ones, is job set-up streamlined and efficient?

5. Operator skills and turnover. An under-skilled and/or transient workforce can lead to a variety of issues that hit performance and profitability. No matter how automated your facility, not having the skills you need in the press room will impact the bottom line, directly or indirectly. Savings on employee skills won’t be savings in the long run. The winning combination is to have both highly skilled and versatile operators and automated press control systems from suppliers, such as QuadTech, that make the most of today’s technologies.

3. Short runs: Flexo platemaking/ cylinder engraving costs can decimate markets in short-run jobs. This is only sustainable when there is enough high-margin work to offset them. Automatic color and register systems and efficient inspection solutions can make incremental improvements. These eliminate job rejection due to printing faults, making a major long-term contribution by delivering increased productivity and customer satisfaction. 4. Failing to get peak performance from presses and finishing equipment. Do you have productivity targets? Are they realistic? Are they

Earthinks Launch New Gravure Inks and Coatings Range For Increased Brand Support and Environmental Best Practice

A

ward wins and customer satisfaction mark a success ful first year in business

EarthinksÂŽ, manufacturer of the most natural inks available for flexographic and screen printing, has launched a range of gravure inks and specialist coatings, providing new printing possibilities to brand owners in their search for improved sustainability. These latest additions to the Earthinks range provides gravure printers and converters with highquality, versatile inks made from sustainable and non-polluting resources - replacing traditional and non-environmental solvent and water based gravure inks. With brands under pressure to monitor and improve their environmental footprint, print houses are increasingly using Earthinks to support their environmental requirements, while meeting brand expectations for high quality print for range of applications including food packaging in particular cartons, paper and poly cups, napkins and sachets as well as wallpaper, greetings cards and many more. Similar to Earthinks' flexographic and screen print products, the new gravure inks are water-based and made from up to 100% natural ingredients including soy, starch, sugars, dextrin, tree resin, cellulose and other polysaccharides. Natural waxes are used to replace standard petroleum-based

synthetics and natural oils are used to defoam instead of mineral oils. They are fully biodegradable and compostable and like all Earthinks products, the new inks are independently tested to ASTM D6866. The new Earthinks coatings range also offers up to 100% natural ingredients with functional and aesthetic properties, and can be used with flexo, screen and gravure inks as well as roller coat applications. AN AWARD-WINNING FIRST YEAR FOR EARTHINKS The launch of the new products follows a successful first year for Earthinks. Having delivered on their commitment to provide a complete eco-friendly ink solution, the company focused on ways to further enhance their customers' facilities in order to support the end-customers' requirements and maximise productivity. To do this, Earthinks installed two ink dispensers at separate customer sites - Weedon Group and Single Source - as well as its first in-house customer colour laboratory at Weedon PSC's Hednesford facility. The Earthinks dispenser allows inhouse colour mixing and the ability to facilitate special colour production on-demand. The colour lab improves print quality, colour consistency and production times, vastly improving onsite efficiency. Paul Mainwaring, Managing Director,

Single Source says, "Since we took the decision to offer the Earthinks range, the response from our customers has been amazing. Many companies want to ensure that their supply chain is as environmentallyfriendly as possible, and Earthinks provide this confidence without compromising the quality of the end product. With the installation of the ink dispenser, we're now able to go above and beyond to meet their requirements and this has impressed both existing customers and new prospects." The market's reception of Earthinks' ground-breaking products has not gone unnoticed. The company has also been rewarded with three accolades for its eco-friendly ink range. Earthinks just won the 2015 Stationers Company Innovation Excellence Award as well as being highly commended in the ‘Sustainable Innovation Award' category at the British Coatings Federation 2014 Awards Ceremony. The company also received a ‘Green Apple Environment Award', presented at

the 2014 Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice ceremony, which took place last autumn in the Houses of Parliament. Jonathan Mack, Owner of Earthinks, comments, "2014 saw Earthinks mark an important development in sustainable printing. When we launched, we genuinely set out to make a difference - no matter how small that might be. However, we have been delighted by the market reaction to our ink range and what we are looking to achieve. For this to be formerly acknowledged by the industry with these two recent award wins has been the icing on the cake. "Our latest product developments are an important next step in our Earthinks journey, providing customers with a complete ink solution that meets the most stringent environmental standards and helps them to achieve their own sustainability goals." MAKERBOT LAUNCHES HANDS-ON LEARNING GUIDE FOR INTRODUCING 3D PRINTING IN THE CLASSROOM New MakerBot Handbook Helps Educators and Students Get Started with Lesson Plans and Hands-on 3D Design Projects Thousands of educators throughout Europe are embracing 3D printing as a new way to teach 21st century skills and prepare students for the jobs of the future. Taking the first steps to introduce students to 3D printing, however, can be challenging. MakerBot, a global leader in the desktop 3D printing industry, conducted in-depth research this spring to better understand how to help educators incorporate 3D printing in classrooms. The research shows that acquiring 3D design skills is a major hurdle for educators and there is no single resource to address this need. To fill that gap, MakerBot published a handbook designed to provide educators with a wide variety of ideas, activities, and projects to get started with 3D printing. Titled MakerBot in the Classroom: An Introduction to 3D Printing and Design, the handbook includes an introduction to 3D printing and a range of hands-on 3D design lesson plans. MakerBot in the Classroom will be available from July 1st as a free digital download for registered MakerBot customers and a sample project chapter will be available free to anyone who registers on eu.makerbot.com. Additionally, MakerBot launched a new MakerBot Education landing page with further ideas and resources to support the integration of 3D printing in the classroom, such as real-world MakerBot stories, videos, challenges for teachers and students, and more. “3D printing is a powerful tool in the classroom and provides engaging experiences that motivate students to excel. 3D printing can help teach many of the 21st century skills that employers are looking for, such as STEAM1 literacy, collaboration,

problem-solving, and applying knowledge to the real world,” said Jonathan Jaglom, CEO of MakerBot. “We’re excited to launch MakerBot in the Classroom to help even more educators and students discover the power of 3D printing to create original designs. This handbook is part of our broader MakerBot Education initiative, which aims to provide teachers, professors, librarians, and students with access to the resources and tools they need to embrace 3D printing. We will continue to work together with educators to build out the leading MakerBot 3D Ecosystem to address their specific needs.” A recent survey of teachers commissioned by MakerBot in the United States showed that 83 percent of teachers using MakerBot 3D Printers empowered their students to design their own objects as opposed to having them print existing designs. This requires educators to teach 3D design and introduce students to the software that enables them to take an idea and turn it into a 3D printable design. Lesson plans and project ideas were among the most frequent requested resources to help educators get started, and MakerBot in the Classroom fills those needs. MakerBot in the Classroom is divided into three sections: The first section covers how MakerBot Replicator 3D Printers work and the technology behind them, the second section shows how to download, scan, and design models to print on a 3D printer, and the third and most comprehensive chapter features multiple projects for teachers and students to 3D design and 3D print. Each section provides background knowledge, learning objectives, terminology, sample activities, and discussion materials. The

project ideas in the handbook are provided as a starting point to help educators integrate 3D printing into their own lesson plans and classrooms. They invite educators and students to investigate a subject matter, explore a variety of 3D modeling tools, and create and print original designs. Each project introduces a different type of free 3D design software, including Tinkercad, OpenSCAD, Sculptris and 123D Design. Each project also has a section that offers guidance on tying the project further into curriculum. For example, Make Your Own Country is a project that casts students as explorers of a new world. Students design and 3D print tiles representing water, forest, mountains, and other landscapes, which can be assembled into a new and uncharted territory. Students then form groups that develop settlements by surveying the land and discovering its natural resources. During this project, students learn 21st century skills, such as 3D design, critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration. MakerBot in the Classroom is the first offering as part of MakerBot’s longterm commitment to working with educators to provide better support for 3D printing in classrooms and on campus. Additional tools and resources for educators are now available on the new MakerBot Education landing page, such as real-world MakerBot stories, videos,

and challenges for teachers and students. For example, MakerBot recently launched five Thingiversity Summer STEAM Challenges on MakerBot Thingiverse, the world’s largest 3D design community, to encourage students, teachers, and librarians to try 3D modeling at home over the summer. The leading MakerBot 3D Ecosystem also includes hardware, materials, learning, software, and apps like MakerBot PrintShop for iPad, which allows students to turn 2D drawings and sketches into physical objects. Additionally, MakerBot offers custom product solutions for educational institutions such as the MakerBot Starter Lab, a scalable, reliable 3D printing solution that is easy to implement; and the MakerBot Innovation Center, a largescale 3D printing hub. MakerBot Replicator 3D Printers are already installed in many schools around the world, for example more than 5,000 schools throughout the U.S. alone. At Libera Università Carlo Cattaneo (LIUC) in Castellanza, Italy, a MakerBot Innovation Center was opened earlier this month and is supposed to be having a profound impact on students, faculty, and the community with its many possibilities. The university will be offering partnerships with as well as courses for regional industry to create a vibrant cross-departmental learning commons and innovation hub that serves both students and the local business community in unprecedented ways.

Canon increases market share THANKS TO EXCEPTIONAL DEMAND FOR IMAGE PRESS C800 SERIES, NOW FOGRA CERTIFIED

C

anon, world-leader in imaging solutions, has shipped over 1,400 units of the imagePRESS C800 series to customers across Europe in the ten months since it began taking orders for the production press in July last year. Thanks to this exceptional demand, Canon secured the leading share of the cutsheet colour production press market in Europe in the last quarter of 2014[1]. Comprising two models – the 70ppm imagePRESS C700 and the 80ppm imagePRESS C800 – the C800 series incorporates a combination of proven technology from the flagship Canon imagePRESS C7011VP(S) with innovations, such as, Consistently Vivid (CV) toner, Compact Registration Technology (CRT), Auto Correct Colour Tone (ACCT) and a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL). This has enabled the presses to deliver advanced levels of print quality, productivity and versatility in both commercial and in-house print environments. Feedback from satisfied customers across Europe indicates that the success of the devices is due to a number of factors - the quality of colour reproduction, flexibility and the high levels of productivity achievable. Rob Exton, the owner and managing director of UK commercial printer, Print by Design, added: “Seven years ago, I was one of the first Canon imagePRESS owners in the UK. I’ve had a number of models since and for me the C700 is the best yet - the print quality is superb, the back-toback registration is stunning and consistently so, and because of its

small footprint, I’ve saved a significant amount of money on rent and rates. The C700 is also very reliable – we’ve done a substantial volume of SRA3 in two months and only needed to call out a technician once.” Braulio Sánchez, a partner at SPRINT FINAL Publicidad, an advertising and public relations agency in Madrid, commented: “The Canon imagePRESS C700 delivers a level of quality I’ve never seen before from toner-based digital print technology. What’s more, its productivity as a light production press is second to none, especially on heavier paper.” Christian Sønderby, Director of ABC Print in Denmark, remarked: "We can put 50, 60 or 70 envelopes into the cassette of the imagePRESS C700 and the engine just prints them at 70 per minute, so it’s a real pleasure. It is probably three to four times as fast as our last machine. The paper handling is better and it very rarely jams. The machine is more robust than the old one we had. To date we have run 300,000 pages and had only one error. It’s the first time I’ve had a new machine with as few difficulties.” Presenting an even more attractive proposition for print service providers, the series has now been certified a FograCert Validation Printing System by German research association, Fogra, in line with the requirements of ISO 12647-8:2012¹. Certified in four configurations (imagePRESS C800 with imagePRESS Server F200/PRISMAsync controllers; imagePRESS C700 with imagePRESS Server F200/PRISMAsync controllers), users of any of these workflows can be confident of repeatedly

producing output of the highest quality, colour accuracy and consistency. Commenting on the success of the imagePRESS C800 series, Mark Lawn, Director, Professional Print Solutions, Canon Europe said, “From the conversations we’d had with customers, we knew that the market was in need of a device offering the superior print quality, reliability and flexibility of the imagePRESS C800 series. The remarkable sales of the series to date and the subsequent wave of positive feedback we’ve received, confirm that Canon

has again delivered on its promise to help customers to meet the changing demands of their own customers and to maintain a competitive advantage. “To add even greater value, we’ve also worked with Fogra to have the series certified as a FograCert Validation Printing System. Using any one of the four certified configurations, customers can be assured that their press will produce consistent and measurable quality and allow them more easily and profitably to meet the demand for high quality print.”
