Corrugated box industry of India

T

he Rs 15,000-crore corrugated box industry is reeling under tremendous margin pressure due to rising input costs and the industry's failure to raise prices. Manufacturers said that that in the last three or four months, paper mills had raised the prices of kraft paper - the main raw material for the industry - by Rs 2,000-4,000 per tonne, but the final consumers (buyers of corrugated boxes) are refusing to pay higher prices despite repeated requests. The industry intends to increase the prices of corrugated boxes by 18-20 per cent in the northern region and by 15-16 per cent in the western and

southern regions. They also want the import duty on kraft and waste paper to be abolished. There are over 10,000 corrugators spread across India, with average tonnage conversion of 45 lakh tonnes per annum. The industry is fragmented and dominated by micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and employs more than five lakh workers directly and indirectly. The booming Indian economy and a flourishing organised retail have raised the expectations that consumption of corrugated packaging will begin to expand again as the number and volume of goods packaged in corrugated

increases. MNCs are demanding corrugated boxes of international standards and the pattern of buying the packaging is changing. The over 4,000 corrugated board and sheet plants are highly labourintensive, employing over half a million people – both directly and indirectly. The industry is converting about 2 million tons of Kraft paper into corrugated boxes. Factories are spreadout in all parts of India, even in the remote industrially backward areas. This present scenario is already being challenged by the sweeping changes that are beginning to take shape. More and more in-line automatic plants are

being set up, as corrugated box makers gear up to meet the new demands for high precision boxes with attractive graphics and large integrated production capacities. Large Corporates and Bulk users of corrugated boxes looking for single/ multiple alternative vendors – capable of meeting stringent specifications, offering alternative designs, test-in-time deliveries at optimum cost. Growing interest in machines made in China, Taiwan and other Asian countries. Many machinery manufacturers entering into alliances with Chinese, Taiwanese manufacturers for manufacturing/ marketing.

Largest ever order for Q.I. Press Controls the Broxbourne printing plant occupies around 87,000 square metres. This accommodates 12 triple-wide manroland Colorman XXL press lines with 60 full-colour towers. The printing presses have the capacity to produce one million 120-page issues of a newspaper per hour.

Menno Jansen (Director Q.I. Press Controls) & Steve Whitehead (Managing Director Newsprinters UK)

Q

.I. Press Controls has received the largest ever order in its history from Newsprinters UK for its printing sites in Broxbourne and Eurocentral. Newsprinters comprises three divisions: Broxbourne, Knowsley and Eurocentral. Of these, Broxbourne is the largest and is responsible for printing some of the UK’s major national dailies, such as The Times and The Daily Telegraph. Broxbourne’s plant consists of 60 towers and Eurocentral's 12. Newsprinters recently announced all these towers are equipped with Q.I. Press Controls’ IDS-3D. The collaboration with Newsprinters dates back to 2010, when a test system was installed on 5 towers at Broxbourne. Trials continued at the Eurocentral site near Glasgow, which enabled Newsprinters to prove the benefits of the system. In October 2014, Newsprinters has given Q.I. Press Controls the goahead to fit Broxbourne and Eurocentral with the system. Management is satisfied with the

partnership with Q.I. Press Controls and believes that use of the innovative IDS-3D, in combination with fountain-water control and Automatic Ink Mist Shields (AIMS), provides optimum repeatable quality and labour savings, resulting in much more efficient presses. Steve Whitehead, managing director of Newsprinters UK, has faith in the system of Q.I. Press Controls: “Following a detailed evaluation over a period of three years we have determined that the system of Q.I. Press Controls is able to reliably fulfil our criteria for an automatic density control system. That is accurate colour control, automatically optimising dampening control, printing fault detection with a management information system to record quality. These systems provide a significant condition monitoring capability at a capital and operating cost that can provide a reasonable return on investment.” The total surface area of the plant is 16 hectares (40 acres) which equates to around 23 Wembley football pitches. The workfloor in

Not only will acquisition of the IDS3D result in a reduction in production and maintenance costs, but also mark the continuation of a stable working relationship between Q.I. Press Controls and Newsprinters, which has the ambition to become the best newspaper printing plant in the world. Steve Whitehead: “Q.I. Press Controls have remained a responsive and diligent partner throughout the long evaluation process.” Newsprinters is investing in its future by buying in the best quality. By teaming up with Q.I. Press Controls, Newsprinters is putting itself in a position to deliver the best possible service by supplying top quality products to its clients well into the future. Menno Jansen, managing director of Q.I. Press Controls is enthusiastic about this new milestone: “We’re extremely happy to have received this prestigious order for the installation of 134 IDS-3D cameras for Newprinters in its plants at Eurocentral and Broxbourne. After the successful installation at News Ltd. in Brisbane and Sydney in Australia, this order represents another important landmark in the history of Q.I. Press Controls. The innovative strength of our organisation has brought about two new solutions, such as AIMS, which is installed in front of the camera so that there is no longer any need for lens cleaning. We will continue to harness this innovative strength in our collaboration with Newsprinters in order to develop new ideas

which will help bring about further automation and improvement of the printing process.” Newsprinters will continue its partnership with Q.I. Press Controls in the future and wonders about the collaboration between Q.I. Press Controls and EAE. Newsprinters technical director, Mark Ellington said: “We will continue our partnership with QI in the future to improve the IDS-3D system, in particular, to develop the management information system into a valuable condition monitoring tool. We will also be watching with interest how Q.I. Press Controls and EAE collaborate to develop their press control systems.” About Newsprinters: Newsprinters is News UK’s printing division and comprises three sites which are amongst the largest and most modern in the world. These plants produce 1.5 trillion copies annually, including the national dailies The Sun, The Times, The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph, Financial Times and a number of independent publications and regional newspapers. The organisation aspires to become the best printing plant in the world and will be investing millions in the future by buying in the very best technological innovations. Newsprinters comprises three divisions: (1) Broxbourne (60 towers); (2) Knowsley (25 towers); and (3) Eurocentral (12 towers). About Q.I. Press Controls: Q.I. Printing Association and Messe Düsseldorf Asia, the general sentiments on the success of the exhibition were reflected in the strong levels of exhibitor and buyer satisfaction from the show floor. As shared by Gernot Ringling, Managing Director, Messe Düsseldorf Asia, “we are very heartened by the success of the exhibition, also in light of the recent safety and security concerns in Bangkok. On closing, we registered strong visitor numbers and significant sales transacted on the show floor – both of which validated the “pull” factor of this world-class exhibition.”

PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015 was the grounds to numerous business transactions with companies such as Heidelberg Graphics, Konica Minolta, Takano Machinery, Wanjin, Sansin, Superior Inkjet, Hewlett-Packard, and many others, reporting successful sales of their machines. For first-time exhibitor, Wanjin, a specialist in print finishing solutions, they sold two machines by the end of the first day of the exhibition. According to PSB Product Marketing Manager for Fuji Xerox (Thailand), Korarit Jindatanon, they chose to launch for the first time to the Thai market their Colour 1000i Press as they were confident of the quality regional audience the exhibition is able to draw. Similarly, for repeat exhibitor Hewlett Packard, who had the largest digital printing booth at the exhibition this year - they highlighted their extensive fleet of game changers specifically the HP Indigo Digital Presses and HP Latex Printers. Business Development Manager for HP (Singapore), Daniel Leong said: “The objective of our participation at PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL was to showcase the latest Indigo technology and other new presses to the Thai market, and we have met them at this exhibition. This show is amazing! We had lots of people visiting our booth and received many sales enquiries and leads. We will definitely be back in two years’ time.” Leading brand name in the printing industry, Heidelberg Graphics – who introduced its strategic partnership with Masterwork Machinery Co., Ltd. (MK), the largest Chinese manufacturer of die cutters at PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015, also secured several business transactions during the exhibition, including one to a new buyer – further paving the way for the company’s expansion plans into the Thai and regional market.

During the four-day staging, PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015 welcomed a diverse range of trade visitors across the packaging and printing sectors, including vocational students from printing and design faculties, to corporate groups and visiting delegations and industry associations from India, Vietnam, Philippines, and for the first time Mauritius. Preliminary statistics indicate that the majority of overseas visitors came from China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Vietnam. Highlighted by Allan Driver, President of the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (Mauritius), PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015 successfully showcased new printing technology and was a “great platform to explore possibilities for joint ventures and partnerships with Thai and regional companies”. The 21-group delegation representing printing and packaging SME’s in Mauritius were impressed by the exhibition’s line-up, including the breadth of machinery and technology on display and how it suitably mirrored the No.1 global trade fairs drupa and interpack in Düsseldorf though on a more regional context. Other industry-specific seminars and conferences that complemented PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL 2015,

also attracted overwhelming response from participants, particularly the Food and Beverage Packaging conference, organized by Food Focus Thailand and Kasetsart University and the Packaging Design Innovation and Technology conference organized by The Thai Packaging Association and the European Aluminium Foil Association and Flexible Packaging Europe. The latter was held in conjunction with the Thai Pack Awards ceremony which saw leading Thai companies with their innovative product packaging being recognised for setting industry standards.

Also serving the needs of the market, the Printing Clinic received positive response and great interest from India and China with publishing companies looking specifically for printing houses in Thailand. Ms Pimnara Jiranithitnon, President of The Thai Printing Association, said: “Each segment has been represented at the clinic, with consultants from offset to digital printers offering advice and links to relevant local Thai printers. We are confident these engagements will spin off to greater trade prospects.”

Geared primarily to provide consultancy advice and business matching recommendations to packaging and printing companies, the two one-stop consultancy clinics organized by The Thai Packaging Association and The Thai Printing Association received warm reception from local and international companies alike.

“As an exhibition for the industry by the industry, PACK PRINT INTERNATIONAL is a platform dedicated to driving the industry forward in the region, and together with our partners, we are committed to developing the exhibition further through research and strategic partnerships, and to build upon the success of activities such as the one-stop consultancy packaging and printing clinics. KBA at Pack Print International in Thailand KBA PRESENTS THE ULTIMATE IN PRESS TECHNOLOGY IN BANGKOK The BITEC Exhibition Center in Bangkok opened its doors on 26 August for the four-day Pack Print International trade show shortly after the attack in the Thai capital. Just nine months ahead of the print industry’s internationally leading trade fair, Drupa, 231 exhibitors from 21 countries presented their products and services to a predominantly Asian crowd. The Koenig & Bauer Group (KBA) and its regional subsidiary KBA Asia Pacific were among the exhibitors. Some 15,000 visitors from 75 countries found out about the latest trends in the world of print. For the first time Italian subsidiary KBAFlexotecnica, responsible for KBA’s flexible packaging printing segment, was present at this show. A flexible web press from this KBA subsidiary based in Tavazzano will soon be installed in Thailand and a further press will be delivered to China. Flexotecnica aims to expand its position in the growing flexible packaging market further with the support of the KBA Group’s regional sales and service subsidiaries.

HIGH-TECH RAPIDA 106 AND… A few days after the terror attack in the Thai capital, KBA showed its colours at Pack Print International in Bangkok (1)Half, medium and large-format KBA Rapida sheetfed offset presses are already well established in commercial, book and packaging printing companies in Thailand and its neighbouring countries. Naturally these were the subject of great interest. In recent years these high performance machines from Saxony have been extremely successful in Thailand. Installations of medium-format presses from the Rapida 105 series have dominated. And even though Thai printing firms are currently holding back in terms of making investments, the first KBA Rapida 106 at T.C.P. on the edge of Bangkok will soon begin printing high-quality packaging at speeds of up to 18,000sph. The press, which is raised by 450mm (17.7in), will be equipped with VariDryBLUE dryers, inline colour density measurement and KBA QualiTronic professional sheet inspection system as demands for quality are rising constantly.

…THE FIRST RAPIDA 105 PRO FOR THAILAND The new Rapida 105 PRO which was unveiled at Print China just recently has also attracted its first Thai customers. Continental Packaging in Bangkok is to receive an eight-colour press with coater and UV drying. This installation also underscores KBA’s leading position in packaging printing. A customer from Myanmar ordered a four-colour A2+-format Rapida 66 at the trade show. Although stock market turbulence in China and the terror attack in Bangkok impacted on the show’s atmosphere and the investment climate in Southeast Asia, it was important for KBA to show its colours in the key market of Thailand four months after its large presence at Print China in Guangdong. Stefan Segger, managing director of KBA Asia-Pacific: “Our international business also knows less favourable times. It is important for us to show potential and existing customers regularly that we are there for them and are able to offer them new products and services with which they can survive in a highly competitive market.” 18 | September-October 2015 | Printing Review

In-house print capabilities to provide increased quality control and production flexibility.

COMMUNITY IMPACT NEWSPAPER TO LAUNCH NEW IN-HOUSE PRINT FACILITY WITH GOSS MAGNUM COMPACT Versioned publications identified as opportunity for growth In-house print capabilities to provide increased quality control and production flexibility

C

ommunity Impact Newspaper of Pflugerville, Texas, has confirmed its investment in a Goss Magnum Compact. The highly-automated Magnum Compact press will be central to the company’s new, purpose-built printing operation, designed to meet an ever-increasing demand for this regionalized, community newspaper, Scheduled for installation in Q2 2016, the Goss Magnum Compact will enable the publishing house to bring high-quality printing on-site and maintain its competitive edge with a wide range of versioned products. With 20 regional issues and a circulation of over 1.5 million copies per month, Community Impact Newspaper has seen significant growth since its launch in 2005. The model for a publication that

features relevant, local news, continues to increase in popularity in the regions it currently serves, and owners, John and Jennifer Garrett, are confident it can be replicated elsewhere. “The news industry is a very competitive marketplace, with online and print competing for the same audience,” explains John Garrett, owner, Community Impact Newspaper. “To be heard over other news channels, you have to up your game. This means providing a news source that is highly-targeted, provides quality content and has a good reputation for accurate, reliable information. This is where print is stronger than digital media, and Community Impact Newspaper is proof of that.”. Shortly after the husband and wife duo moved to

Austin, they recognized a gap in the market for an informative publication designed for local citizens. However, drawing on their extensive experience within the newspaper industry, they understood that people would not pay for subscriptions and decided to mail it for free. Garrett continues, “Gone are the days of people paying for news, so in order to be profitable you have to ensure that your publication has high-quality content. This ensures that advertisers recognize its value to readers. In addition, providing a regionalized, versioned newspaper that reaches a very specific, local target audience is crucial. This approach has served us well to date but we continue to look for ways to enhance our paper to

provide an even better product in the future. To take the next step, we need to bring high-quality printing in-house and increase our versioning capabilities. That’s where the Goss Magnum Compact comes in.” With simplified operation and runlength flexibility, the Magnum Compact enables users to print a wide range of products competitively. The ability to print cost-effective runs as short as 500 - 1,000 copies provides printers not only with an alternative to digital print, but an economical way of handling runs up to 250,000 copies, giving unparalleled production flexibility and a powerful competitive advantage. Community Impact Newspaper recognized that by managing

versioning and targeted inserts at the production level, the company can not only better control the product quality but explore new opportunities to enhance it. “However, we knew very little about print production when we started exploring this opportunity,” explains Garrett. “We researched the level of investment required and the technology on the market, and this is when we started the conversation with Goss. Seeing their presses really helped us to visualize how we could leverage this technology. The print house we have used to date uses Goss technology, so we knew the print quality was of a high standard. However, other features, such as its suitability for short runs and versioning, automatic plate loading and quick changeovers were also

critical factors that led us to choose this press.” The Goss Autoplate technology delivers fast makereadies and enables successive jobs to be run with complete plate changes within two minutes. This is accomplished with minimum waste and contributes to maximum press uptime. Plates that have been removed may be reused for repeat production of shorter run jobs, further extending the value proposition of the press. Community Impact’s press configuration will include three Contiweb FB pasters, three four-high Magnum compact towers and a Goss N45 folder with quarter folder, ensuring superior, crease free folding capabilities.

“While we think that the press will be well utilized, we are confident that there is plenty of room for growth. We know the decision to bring print in-house isn’t typical for publishers, but we have a market-leading product and are certain of the many opportunities available - just within what we are doing today, let alone when we start to grow. “Even so, it’s been a daunting process! But Goss really helped us to understand the technology.

This is the biggest investment we have ever made and it’s nice to do it with people we respect. Goss have made the entire process enjoyable, and this is definitely the start of a great partnership,” Garrett concludes.

Goss marks 20 years leading press automation technology Twentieth

anniversary of Autoplate automatic plate-changing More

than 2100 Autoplate units now running worldwide Enabling

technology for competing with sheetfed and gravure

T

wenty years after Goss Autoplate technology was brought to market, Goss International is honoring a key milestone in the history of offset printing. Introducing reductions in makeready time, labor and expense, the Autoplate innovation has extended the web offset advantage and created opportunities across a wide range of sectors and applications. Goss Autoplate automatic platechanging was first introduced on the M-600 press in 1995, offering the ability to plate up an entire press in less than three minutes due to a simple, precision-engineered sequence. Plates were placed into cassettes on the printing units while the press was running or idle; then, at the push of a button old plates were automatically rotated off the cylinders and replaced by the new ones. All or any combination of plates could be changed in this way. According to Goss product manager, Jean-Pierre, Moioli, despite initial skepticism, live demonstrations at trade shows and open houses, together with field experience, rapidly established Autoplate technology as the flag-bearer for web press automation. “The beauty of the system was – and is – the

simplicity of its operation made possible through precision engineering, without requiring extra cleaning or maintenance,” explains Moioli. “With the realization that the shorter the run, the greater the benefit, came a freedom to explore run lengths beyond those traditionally associated with web offset and even to compete with sheetfed.” Today, more than 2100 Goss Autoplate units are in operation on a range of commercial and newspaper presses worldwide, including M-600, Sunday 2000, 4000 and 5000, and Colorliner CPS press systems. In addition, its development has directly influenced a range of additional Goss innovations in industrialized print production. These include: The ‘96-page’ web offset press, creating new economies for very high-volume commercial printing and directly challenging the lowervolume gravure industry; Non-stop edition change (NSEC) which ensures further time, energy and waste savings in makeready particularly for high-volume versioning; Automatic Transfer (AT) printing for on-the-run edition changes,

24 | September-October 2015 | Printing Review

eliminating conventional makeready requirements in some applications. “Our M-600 experience made the wider press format possible with the same design, creating more opportunities for printers – and the larger the plate, the greater the benefits,” comments Moioli. “One of the main goals achieved is reliability, proven by field experience with close to 100 percent plate change success. In the case of Automatic Transfer we have customers running 48-page format press lines that are changing more than 700 plates a day!” Most recently, as the single, most significant enabling technology of the Magnum Compact press, Goss Autoplate knowhow has led to a new era for newspaper printers and publishers. In reducing makeready time by as much as 90 percent, the Magnum Compact press lowers the break-even point of economical newspaper production. Combined with additional features such as consistent high quality, wide substrate flexibility, heatset options, and a versioning tool, this development provides the means to reach into new markets particularly for those that currently produce small- to mediumcirculation publications. “Through our decades of experience with Autoplate technology, we were able to develop a simple, cost-effective system entirely unique to this sector. In providing the ability to change plates in 30 seconds and to complete a full job

changeover in less than five minutes, printers can fill the press with work even in the shortest production window,” comments Eric Bell, director of Goss marketing. “The breakthrough with the Magnum Compact press is a perfect example of the legacy of Autoplate technology in general,” concludes Bell. “I can’t honestly claim that our product designers, back in 1995, could foresee the level of competition that we know today but, bit by bit, as margins have become tighter and harder-won right across the board, the crucial advantages of Autoplate have been unlocking new potential.” For more information, please visit: http://www.gossinternational.com/ Goss Autoplate marks 20 years leading press automation technology.

Newspaper Publishing

KODAK TECHNOLOGY IS HELPING TO USHER IN A NEW ERA OF INNOVATION THAT IS CHANGING THE GAME FOR NEWSPAPER PUBLISHERS S-Series Imprinting Systems. They integrate into existing offset production processes, enabling full utilization of existing equipment, while helping drive readership through more interactivity. Kodak’s systems mount inline on an offset press and offer speeds up to 3,000 feet per minute in monochrome or full color. Hybrid printing With hybrid digital printing, newspaper printers can add any number of unique features to traditional newspapers. Features such as images, maps, QR codes, serial numbers, addresses, or versioned ads can be integrated at full production speeds on existing offset presses.

Changes in consumer habits and preferences are driving significant changes in the newspaper industry. Many people now embrace a combination of print and online news, and are blending their consumption of targeted local content with national or global content. As a result, newspapers and the companies that publish them are facing a fundamental business transformation that presents a variety of new opportunities. Globally, the adoption of digital content delivery has had a significant impact on the way people consume news, meaning that in many cases newspapers have had to reinvent themselves and find new and unique ways to connect with and maintain their readers. Advertisers are exploring new capabilities in direct marketing and digital

advertising that are taking them to new media channels. Newspapers have responded by adopting new technology and designing ways to engage in a more interactive fashion with their readers. Whether through personalized news content, targeted advertising, or blended print and digital strategies, newspapers are finding ways to remain as competitive as ever. A growing publishing trend today is to use digital inkjet printing to add variable and targeted content to traditional offset printing. These hybrid printing approaches are helping many newspapers stabilize circulation and increase revenue in some areas of the business. With high-speed digital inkjet printing, publishers are able to produce targeted or versioned issues of papers. These new targeted or personalized papers are more

26 | September-October 2015 | Printing Review

attractive to advertising clients because they strategically reach only the readers who are aligned with their marketing messages. Powerful digital printing solutions give publishers the chance to deliver more value to readers and advertisers through games, late-breaking news, and localized content. Microzoning—producing different versions of a paper for a highly localized area—offers smaller businesses affordable advertising to their nearby constituency. Targeted ads in a targeted area generate higher response rates for advertisers. Increased relevance leads to increased interest, which leads to increased circulation. So how do publishers create hybrid digital/traditional systems? One solution is high-speed inkjet printheads, like the KODAK PROSPER

These interactive ads can command premiums of 30 percent more than traditional static ads. Gaming applications let newspapers print winning numbers on each copy, driving readers to visit a website or a merchant location to see if they won. Other applications include inserts that contain unique barcodes for the holder to scan at a retail location. For example, Axel Springer, one of the largest publisher of newspapers and magazines in Germany began using the S30 system for variable publishing and advertising campaigns in its printed newspapers in 2012. One of its six manroland Colorman newspaper presses has been equipped with this Kodak imprinting system, which can deliver consistently high quality with 600 x 200 dpi resolution at web speeds approaching 3,000 fpm (almost 50 ft./ sec.). The combination of conventional coldset web-offset and high-speed inkjet printing means variable data can be imprinted into static content without

printing of barcodes to expedite truck loading and delivery as well as tracking of returned copies. Across Asia, advertisers and newspaper printing companies have been investing in hybrid digital printing. Starting in 2012, seven newspaper printing companies in China and one of the largest newspaper companies in Japan, Chunichi Newspaper, have invested in KODAK PROSPER S20 Imprinting System. compromising web-offset productivity. The Prosper S30 Imprinting System is installed in the superstructure of the Colorman press. This configuration affords flexibility, as one web can be printed by two different towers, depending on the web lead. With this imprinting arrangement, variable elements can be printed on the newspaper’s outer pages as well as on selected inner pages. Since the sytstem has been set-up, the publisher has run with a versioned advertising promotion, where the 220,000 copies of one of its newspapers were printed with a unique prize code via inkjet imprint using the Prosper S30. The code was the password to a lottery with a printer as the top prize. Another example is a large-scale campaign run by German newspaper Bild for its Hamburg readers over a period of several week. In the Cash Million lottery, tickets bearing a one-off, inkjet-imprinted number combination were included with the newspaper at the start of the week. Readers were urged to compare their numbers with the daily lucky numbers, with a chance to win cash and other prizes at the end of the campaign. The program was designed to strengthen reader loyalty. A similar prize draw was organized when approximately 35,000 copies of Welt Kompakt were imprinted every day with the Prosper S30 system. An exclusive prize code on the tabloid’s title page held the key to desirable consumer electronics. The promotion was originally supposed to last only two weeks, but the publisher extended it two

more weeks due to the campaign’s success.

A new era in the newspaper industry is coming

Another new model that is enabled by hybrid printing is the personalization of newspapers. El Mundo, the second largest printed daily newspaper in Spain, has been able to print personalized newspaper runs at the Calprint printing plant in Medina del Campo, Valladolid. Thanks to the KODAK PROSPER S20 Imprinting System, a variable data printhead has been installed on existing web presses to allow five different editions of the daily newspaper to be printed. With falling readership levels driving demand for shorter print runs, Unidad Editorial, publisher of the El Mundo, Marca and Expansión newspapers, was looking for ways to turn the situation around. It found the answer in hybrid printing, which allowed El Mundo to incorporate different promotions and variations in the masthead, as well as on the front page, without having to shut down the press during the daily run. Above all, what's most useful to Unidad Editorial is having access to a wide variety of possibilities to personalize promotions, prize drawings, discounts and subscribers' issues and produce customized advertising dependent on a reader's district, geographic area or industrial sector. The hybrid system has also allowed the company to create innovative localized marketing initiatives in order to obtain data from readers and print breaking news without having to stop the press.

Beyond new revenue opportunities, newspapers around the world also are looking for ways to reduce costs and become more sustainable by streamlining production. Advancements in newspaper workflow, process free plates like KODAK SONORA News and presses are making production more efficient and helping publishers to reduce their costs and improve their bottom lines. At a time when boosting revenues is a difficult challenge, reducing overall costs helps to keep many businesses profitable.

In addition to marketing and content, digital printing also helps in the area of logistics, enabling the

KODAK SONORA NEWS Process Free Plates are designed specifically for newspaper applications. The plates eliminate the processing step required by traditional thermal plates and provide significant energy, water, and waste reductions without requiring printers to make sacrifices on productivity or print capabilities. Since the announcement of its 1,000th SONORA Process Free Plate customer in July 2014, Kodak's SONORA Plate customer base has grown dramatically. There are now more than 3,000 customers using SONORA Plates and strong global growth is projected to continue. In Latin America, several large flagship newspapers converted to SONORA NEWS Plates, including Group RBS, a leading multimedia communication company in Brazil, publishing eight major newspapers throughout the south of the country. For RBS, Sonora has helped with a reduction in their maintenance index and faster processing times. As a result, they

have been able to increase the amount of plates they produce. When compared to their previous process, the current Sonora News procedure has facilitated the total omission of the chemical process in addition to making the maintenance process easier. With their previous CTP, around 250 plates could be produced, whereas now they are able to produce around 300 plates. As the Sonora News Plate is process-free, it is fully in keeping with the RBS Group’s environmental values and is great for business. Whether you focus on the revenue boosting opportunities, process efficiency improvements or sustainability and environmental benefits, be sure to partner with a provider that understands the market and offers a full range of powerful, scalable solutions with a proven track record. El Mundo, Axel Springer, RBS and many more successful newspaper publishers are embracing the possibilities for business growth and savings that hybrid technology and process free plates offer them. Bearing in mind that there are no limits with this technology apart from one's imagination, the challenge now lies with publishers. Those that find applications that set them apart and invest in innovative technology will make a profit while opening up a broader range of business opportunities. About Kodak Kodak is a technology company focused on imaging. AGFA GRAPHICS LAUNCHES ATTIRO VHS, THE TOP-SPEED CLEAN-OUT UNIT FOR CHEMISTRY-FREE VIOLET PLATES “After the successful introduction of the Attiro clean-out unit earlier this year, Agfa Graphics now announces the Attiro VHS, built on the same revolutionary and patented cascade concept. “With an increased plate throughput speed of up to 3 m/min, the Attiro VHS easily handles plates from platesetters imaging up to 400 plates per hour, such as Agfa Graphics’ newest Advantage N-TR VHS. "The throughput numbers of Attiro VHS speak for themselves, especially for heavy-duty printers”, said Emiel Sweevers, Newspaper Segment Manager at Agfa Graphics. "They need high plate volumes and require high throughput speeds in the complete pre-press produc-

tion." The Attiro and Attiro VHS are built according to a unique cascade design concept. There are three sections; the concentrated gum cascades from the third section into the second and later into the first. The gum is thus effectively reused three times, resulting in minimal gum consumption yet maximal clean-out effect. It allows users to save on maintenance and gum while contributing to a more sustainable prepress process.““When Attiro VHS with Attiro concentrated gum is used in combination with Agfa Graphics' chemistry-free plate, the true benefits of Attiro and the cascade concept become evident:“Full

EURO POOL RELIES ON THE FULLY AUTOMATIC CHANNEL BALING PRESSES FROM HSM ONCE AGAIN

E

uro Pool System is Europe's largest logistics provider in the field of reusable packaging for fresh produce and features reusable blue, green and black packaging which rotates several million times every year. In cooperation with the European retailer, Euro Pool System is increasingly focusing on optimum logistics solutions. For almost five years, Euro Pool System has been working together with the German baling press manufacturer HSM GmbH + Co. KG with great success. In September 2015, already the fifth fully automatic baling press will be delivered to the logistics provider. Cardboard, PET bottles and aluminium drink cans are compressed in all the HSM channel baling presses that were previously

delivered. Two HSM VK 8818 R FU machines with chain conveyor belts and a pressing power of 880 kN have been in use in Hungary since 2011. Depending on the material, the highly compressed bales reach a weight of up to 700 kg, a bale size of approx. 1100 x 750 x 600-1200 mm and are held together by a fully automatic 5-fold wire strapping. One of the two presses is equipped with a PET perforator, so that the PET bottles can be perforated and significantly reduced in volume before compressing. As a result of the smooth and successful cooperation so far, Euro Pool System opted once again for two HSM VK 8818 R FU machines for the branch in the Czech Republic in 2013. All four baling presses are equipped with a frequencycontrolled drive, which enable

power to be reduced by up to 40% compared to conventional drives. This year, Euro Pool has now ordered another machine of the same type for the branch in Slovakia, which is due to be delivered shortly. Another machine order for this location is already in the pipeline. In operation since 2011: two HSM VK 8818 R machines at Euro Pool in Hungary

Kodak and Guiton Group Launch KP Services (Jersey) Limited KODAK STREAM INKJET TECHNOLOGY CREATES A MORE FLEXIBLE BUSINESS MODEL FOR THE NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY

K

odak Limited and Guiton Group Limited announced today the birth of KP Services (Jersey) Limited, a collaboration between Kodak and Guiton Group Limited, which also owns the Jersey Evening Post. KP Services (Jersey) Limited will print the Jersey Evening Post as well as the majority of U.K. national newspapers (11 titles in total) for distribution in Jersey and Guernsey. It is estimated that KP Services (Jersey) Limited will print approximately 35,000 newspapers in total each day (made up of the combined circulations required for each separate publication). The new service will bring a number of benefits to Guernsey and Jersey

and, in particular, will overcome the challenges of reliable delivery by avoiding the frequent weather delays associated with flying newspapers into islands on the day of publication. KP Services (Jersey) Limited will open for business in 2016. Kodak will install two KODAK PROSPER 6000P Presses and four of the newly-launched Hunkeler Combi-Solution Newspaper finishing lines. The KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses are powered by an advanced Intelligent Print System (IPS) that continuously monitors, evaluates and adjusts operations to ensure exceptional quality output. With the improved IPS, the KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses can monitor and instantly correct color registration, delivering enhanced registration performance. 1,000 feet (or 300 meters) per minute on standard newsprint paper delivering close to 3,000 newspapers every hour*. They are ideally suited for print sites that have to print a large number of low-volume titles. The innovative concept underlying Hunkeler‘s latest newspaper finishing line allows for fullyautomated changeover between Tabloid and Broadsheet formats as well as the automated collation of multiple sections. Every newpsaper going through the folding and collating sub-system can have a different number of pages with a maximum page count of 140 Tabloid pages per newspaper. Executive Quotes “In today’s printing environment, businesses need to invest in technologies that complement longestablished production methods, yet also enable them to drive

newspaper printing into the future,” said Jack Knadjian, Managing Director, KP Services (Jersey) Limited. “Kodak has pioneered inkjet printing for newspapers and is ready to show the world the next generation of inkjet presses with the speed and quality provided by KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology. It would not have been possible to print so many titles with such a diversity of print runs (less than 300 to more than 15,000) and some with very high page counts using offset technology. Through KP Services (Jersey) Limited, we will now be able to demonstrate the value of KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses to our customers around the world.” “This is a welcome investment into the Jersey economy by such a prestigious global company. The partnership between Kodak UK and the Guiton Group will see the very latest digital printing technology coming to the island, new jobs created and new skills being learned,” said Senator Lyndon

Farnham, Jersey’s Minister for Economic Development. “The Jersey operation will be a worldwide showcase for the digital printing of newspapers and we are delighted to see such innovation and investment brought to the island.” “After 125 years of consistently printing our own titles, it is fair to say that any third-party solution needed to be technologically superior for us to consider moving from selfsufficiency to this type of partnership,“ said Paul Carter, Managing Director, Guiton Publishing and the Jersey Evening Post. “We’ve been watching digital development for over a decade and always held back due to the speed and reliability issues that this technology struggled with previously. We are confident that adding the KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses, combined with the Hunkeler finishing equipment and

our own expertise in publishing and distribution, makes this the right time to move forward. In the year when we celebrate our 125th anniversary, it is satisfying to invest in future-proofing our business in this way." About Kodak Kodak is a technology company focused on imaging. We provide – directly and through partnerships with other innovative companies – hardware, software, consumables and services to customers in graphic arts, commercial print, publishing, packaging, electronic displays, entertainment and commercial films, and consumer products markets. Q

IPC – EAE has sold yet another Performance Package. The Performance Package, which comprises an update of current systems from EAE and extra automation features from Q.I. Press Controls, ensures greater efficiency and product improvements for printing firms. The package also helps bring about even faster return-on-investment times then the products of Q.I. Press Controls and EAE do separately. This time it was the turn of IPM Press Print (formerly known as Sodimco) in Anderlecht, Belgium to buy the QIPC - EAE package. IPM Press Print has been experiencing problems of stability in its printing processes. For the past few years, print quality has been inconsistent, with a lot of wastage in the start-up phase and during print runs. Q.I. Press Controls took IPM Press Print on a fact-finding mission to several well-known printing plants in the Netherlands where Q.I. Press Controls had its IDS-3D installed. The Q.I. Press Controls system clearly left an impression on IPM Press Print. Round the conference table, the systems offered by EAE became another item on the agenda. The joint-venture between QIPC – EAE soon created the possibility of a combined Performance Package: IPM Press Print has welcomed this joint package with

Q.I. Press Controls’ Head of Sales, Erwin van Rossem explains exactly what a “Performance Package” entails: “A Performance Package offers customers the chance to upgrade their current systems and combine these with other additional automation features. Thanks to the merger, QIPC – EAE is able to effectuate projects with even greater efficiency.” In addition to improved operating reliability, the customer gets a much quicker return on investment. What's more, by implementing a project even more efficiently, an attractive all-in-one deal can be provided.

Press Controls and EAE. The automation package will have several concrete effects for IPM Press Print's activities. First of all, the package's improved ease-of-use will reduce manpower requirements to a single full-time employee. The fully automated cut-off control and Fan-out control will also result in drastic savings in waste, in the knowledge that this\ Eric Bouko (Managing Director, IPM Press Print) & Erwin van Rossem (Head of Sales Q.I. Press Controls) is now around 3,000 copies per start-up period. Last but not least, the whole package will lead to improved consistency when it comes to product quality. Interest in The Print Show continues to grow as major industry brands sign up solutions.

KBA, EFI, printMAX and Intec Printing Solutions all commit to exhibition stands at this year’s inaugural edition of the event Organisers of this year’s inaugural edition of The Print Show have been handed a further boost after more major companies from the industry signed up to exhibit at the event later this year. Taking place at National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham from October 13th to 15th, The Print Show has been designed to celebrate our industry and the work its members do. Covering all areas of print, from industrial print through to wide-format print, the show will provide a platform for both manufacturers and suppliers to showcase their latest solutions to the industry. With the likes of digital giants Ricoh and Konica Minolta having confirmed their presence at the show, organisers have now revealed litho print will also feature heavily with industry heavyweight KBA signing up to exhibit. KBA joins another major litho brand in Manroland Sheetfed in committing to the show, ensuring the event caters for visitors from all backgrounds. Speaking about the decision to exhibit at the show, Andrew Pang, managing director of KBA UK, said The Print Show will allow the manufacturer to communicate its key messages to the market, as well as update visitors to the show about its latest products and

“KBA is participating in this event because we have a special story to tell,” Pang said, adding: “The financial structure of our sheetfed solutions division is very robust, the technologies we have developed for our presses are more advanced than any other on the market, and we have refocused our UK operation to deliver the levels of partnership and support that printers need in today's business climate. “It is important, for us, that we communicate these messages to the industry in general. Our plan is to meet as many customers as possible to get to know what each other are about; emails, the internet and the media are all very good, but it's people who do business!” LET’S GET DIGITAL While visitors interested in the litho print side of the market will be buoyed by the news of KBA’s attendance, organisers have also confirmed that digital print will also enjoy a heightened presence after EFI confirmed it would exhibit at The Print Show. Joining a host of other digital print companies, EFI will use its presence at the event to demonstrate some of its latest technologies, including its wide range of software solutions. Elli Cloots, senior product marketing manager at EFI, said the company is “very excited” to be part of the debut event. Cloots added: “The UK has always been a very good market and needs its own show so print service providers can experience integrated total solutions with no need to travel

abroad. The NEC Birmingham is an ideal venue for this, and we believe that Link Exhibitions, with their own publishing experience and network, have everything to make The Print Show a success.” Also confirming its place at The Print Show is Intec Printing Solutions. The Poole-based company will launch its new Intec CP3000 MFP complete digital colour printing press at the show, in addition to showcasing a host of other technologies for processes such as packaging and booklet printing. Ian Melville, managing director of the company, said: “The UK market needs an event like this so that anyone involved in print, of any type, can see what is on offer, whet their appetites and to see where they could possibly develop and progress their business now. “People will definitely see something different, pick up new ideas on a show focused heavily on their market and to keep abreast of all the emerging developments for the industry. From our presentation we hope that people will find new applications that will open new markets for them in the short run, on demand arena.” ADDRESSING THE WIDER MARKET In keeping with the event’s promise to address all areas of print, organisers have also announced that printMAX is to exhibit at the show in partnership with wide-format print giant Mimaki. Michael Bolton, managing director of printMAX, said the show will provide the company with an opportunity to address the industry at a time when there is a “buzz of positivity and enthusiasm” within the market. Bolton added: “The Print Show offers an invaluable opportunity to see a vast array of solutions in one

place. It is an unmissable event for any company looking to add something new or improved, or simply to see what is available across the entire sector. “The show comes at a time where there is a buzz of positivity and enthusiasm within the industry. It’s a great opportunity to not only support a new event but also to meet such a variety of visitors. The breadth of potential visitors was an appealing factor, with no other show offering an opportunity to showcase such versatile and innovative products, appealing to the entire UK print industry.” Bolton revealed that printMAX’s initial plan for the show include demonstrations of Mimaki’s CJV150 print and cut option as well as the Mimaki UJF-6042 direct to object printer, with the CFL-605RT compact flatbed cutter sitting alongside. He adds: “With these three machines we can demonstrate a broad array of applications—from printing rollup banners, posters and stickers right through to promotional items, bespoke gifts and even packaging prototypes. In addition to all this we will have a wealth of knowledge on stand, unmissable show offers, product demonstrations and much more.” Reflecting on the news of the latest exhibitors, event director Chris Davies said he is “delighted” to have secured the support of such big names, adding that he expects to add more large industry brands ahead of the show in October. Davies said: “We’ve always promised that The Print Show will offer what other events do not in that it will address all areas of the market, rather than certain sections of it. With confirmation of three massive names from different sectors of print, visitors can be assured that their needs will be met—whether they be litho, digital or even wide-format print..

Upgrade InlineCutoff Control dynamic for BAUMANN DRUCK FOR MORE EFFICIENCY systems can react to every measurement and can be re-adjusted for ensuring an accurate cut-off. According to the system configuration, the customer is able to save more than 50% of cut-off waste at reel changes or single blanket washing. Furthermore a significantly smoother cut with fewer tolerances can be achieved at every production start and run. Due to this, the selling of the products after interferences like start-up, blanket washing or reel change can be compensated early than with an conventional control with mechanical compensators for cutting positions.

As the only press manufacturer in the market, manroland web systems develops in-house ClosedLoop systems that enable a fully integrated operation with user confidence. Reducing Waste Rates Due to Highly Dynamic Cut-off Register Control High speed delivery at short lead times is just one trend of modern

commercial printing. Smaller runs, aligned with special target groups, additionally have to meet high quality demands. Thus, besides short makeready times, publishing houses more and more require higher quality standards for color and cutoff register – both, for hardcover and for the paperback market. Furthermore, this also means reduced waste rates for the printer, what helps achieving an ideal costper-copy for the production.

manroland web systems Joins Digital Book Printing Forum in London According to the required format and pagination of the signature, the customer can choose the relevant web lead over the formers. The strongest point of the FormerLine concept is to produce different formats and paper qualities in so called “batches” which can consist of different books with different page numbers. Even each individual book can have a different pagination.

Digital finishing solutions developed and engineered by manroland web systems help to save the printed book

T

he “2015 London Digital Book Printing Forum” took place at The Royal Society in London on June 25, 2015. Around 150 people joined the event. The target audience was anyone who has a stake in the development of digital book production – from large global publishers, self-publishers, printing companies and suppliers to the printing and publishing industries. Also manroland web systems joined the discussion about how to make the printed book fit for the future and how to provide the most efficient and cost-effective technology in this sector. The event was organized by Interquest, a USA based market research company specializing in the global printing industry, and is held on an annual basis also in

London, Every year there is also a presentation of the results of market analysis from previous years that show how the market opinion changes. As manroland web systems emerged into a topsupplier for digital book production during the last few years, the company took part at the event and added its knowledge to the discussions that were all about the main topic: How to make the printed book more attractive to the customers in times of e-readers and tablets? Printed Books on the Upgrade The market research presented at the event shows: the UK digital book production currently is 13% of the total (increased from 8% in 2012). Interquest research shows that the market perception is that this will rise to 18% - 20% by 2018. The USA book production has even increased by 4.6% and bookshops have seen a recovery. The sales of tablets and e-readers have slowed

48 | September-October 2015 | Printing Review

or stagnated. These are good numbers for digital book printers and this is mainly caused by the immense progress in productivity and quality that has happened during the last few years to support the digital book printing business. FormerLine Offers Numerous Production Possibilities manroland web systems e.g. developed the FormerLine for digital book production on an industrial scale. The system was especially designed regarding the requirements and the intended book production of the customers. In general, the FormerLine convinces by its variability, enabled by the continuously flexible cut-off from 145 mm to 420 mm. Together with the lift collator RS 34 from RIMA, the system produces stapled signatures or up to 8,000 glued and stapled book blocks per hour with up to 70 mm magnitude in a highly efficient way and with great performance.

In keeping with the preferences of the market, the FormerLine is fast, flexible, and productive. The FormerLine runs with a web speed of up to 300 m/min. The combination of a variable cut-off, a maximum web width of 1,067 mm (model with 3 formers) and a production speed of up to 300 meters per minute shows the best performing digital printing system for book production at this time. The high efficiency explained by minimal makeready times, also for format changes, reel changes and industrial maintenance concepts, furthermore features the solution. NEW TECHNOLOGY MEANS MORE SUCCESS Technology like the FormerLine helps the printers to reach the requirements of the market. The discussion at the event showed that there are several topics that drive the industry today. Besides slowing the growth of e-books, book printers care about a supply chain management: publishers want printers to be able to produce a “book of one” print on demand (POD) or any number of books in a timely and cost-effective manner as an individual edition or in batched production using highly automated web based job entries. This different Business Cases were nicely shown from different European Printers, presenting their company, their workflow and their printing systems to the audience.

A strong sense of tradition for Wellington Mills urban wayfinding scheme

S

ignbox has just completed a small but complex wayfinding project at the popular Wellington Mills housing cooperative in London, SE1. Originally the mill site of John Oakey & Sons Ltd, a manufacturer of abrasives and sandpaper; the estate has an extensive history and records show that in the 1700’s a female orphanage stood on the site.

Wellington Mills commented – “Did I say, lovely signs? Now I finally know where I am. Thanks, also to your patient designers at Signbox”Mark Bartlett, Signbox’s Managing Director, comments: “It was inspiring to play a key role in the integrated rebranding project of Wellington Mills. We are proud to have supported a housing association with such a strong heritage.”

In 1970, architect Barbara Bienias was commissioned by the Greater London Council to create the separate buildings that make up the existing estate. The construction took 6 years and it has remained part of the housing co-operative ever since. Signbox competitively tendered the signage project as part of a general improvements scheme underway at Wellington Mills. Our bid involved the design, manufacture and install of a bespoke wayfinding solution to create an easier means of navigating the estates buildings and surrounding spaces. The core of the project called for a consistent wayfinding strategy throughout the estate by rationalising the quantity of signage. The designs were subject to a review process by the housing association and relevant stakeholders. The feedback on our design submittals centred on the strong history of Wellington Mills and it was essential to retain key visual elements from the original typography and branding. All the signs were fabricated by Signbox at our Egham workshops, constructed from powder coated aluminium to Pantone matched colours and finished with matt laminated external grade vinyl graphics. Fujifilm’s Flenex FW WATER-WASHABLE FLEXO PLATE MAKES ITS OFFICIAL European debut at Labelexpo 2015

F

ollowing successful North American installations, the highquality plate will take centre stage within Fujifilm’s label offering at the show Fujifilm announces that it will use Labelexpo Europe 2015 (September 29th - October 2nd, Brussels) as the European launch platform of its advanced new water-washable flexo plate, Flenex FW. On its stand (A34 - Hall 9), Fujifilm will demonstrate how label converters can benefit from this high quality and low cost-in-use flexo plate. Flenex FW is a photopolymer plate containing a special rubber-based compound that is not oxygen sensitive, minimising the effect oxygen has on the dot shape. As a result, Flenex guarantees reduced dot gain and better ink transfer for cleaner and brighter print results. The plate delivers longer runs for label converters, while producing a consistent 200lpi at 4,400 dpi, 1% flat top process dot structure for superb high quality. Improved durability and reduction in plate swell are further benefits offered by the new Flenex FW plate. Visitors to the Fujifilm stand will see how Flenex FW reduces platemaking processing times to less than 40 minutes, 3 times faster than leading solvent systems and 1.5 times faster than current thermal and water-wash technologies. This enables label businesses to increase the number of plates they can produce in a given time, and also achieve a faster turnaround. Fujifilm will also be highlighting how

Flenex FW eliminates the expense of higher-cost solvent and thermal processors, as well as potential upcharges on associated consumables, and why it represents the lowest cost-in-use flexo plate production system. Compatible with the leading flexo platesetters and water-wash processors, the Flenex FW plate will be part of an integrated production environment at the show, which will also include a dedicated label workflow solution on Fujifilm’s stand.

The Smart Extruder also allows users to adapt quickly to new innovations in the evolving world of 3D printing. When MakerBot introduces new materials like MakerBot Composite PLA, customers will be able to purchase a Smart Extruder made to handle the new filament, instead of

having to buy an entirely new printer. The Red Dot Award was created in 1954 to recognize products with the highest quality of design. A panel of leading design experts convenes every year to evaluate products based on specific criteria: from physical characteristics such as durability, functionality, ergonomics, ecological compatibility, and formal quality to abstract traits

such as innovation, symbolic and emotional content, product periphery, and self-explanatory quality. These latter criteria consider the way users interact with the product and the emotions they invoke. The international Red Dot jury bestows the sought-after seal of quality only to products that stand out thanks to their excellent design.

CANON IMPROVES THE MAKE-READY PROCESS FOR BOTH IN-HOUSE AND COMMERCIAL PRINTERS WITH LAUNCH OF PRISMAPREPARE 6.2

C

anon, world-leader in imaging solutions, is launching PRISMAprepare 6.2, the latest version of its all-inone, fully integrated document preparation software. This solution streamlines the make-ready process from composition to production to help both in-house and commercial printing professionals shorten production turnaround times, expand their capabilities, boost productivity and reduce operational costs. The new version of the deviceindependent software strengthens its support for the in-house printing market and extends its functionality to the benefit of commercial printers and copy shops in the graphic arts segment. PRISMAprepare now optimises the productivity capabilities of the high-end Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE devices, the full ranges of Canon varioPrint and Canon imagePRESS and the Océ VarioPrint line-up. It also supports a variety of other colour and black and white production cut-sheet printers. Building on its reputation as a professional and productive makeready application, PRISMAprepare 6.2 includes the following new features: Content Editing – This function allows a print service provider (PSP) to easily make last-minute changes to the contents of a document, avoiding the need to send the document back to the customer for re-submission and improving

turnaround time. Using the Content Editing function, the PSP can make minor changes and corrections to the text, such as amending typographical errors, copy and move graphical PDF (Portable Document Format) objects inside the document and select a bitmap area of a scanned image and copy and move it inside the document. Addressing an issue more specific to the graphic arts market, the function also allows colour adjustment to be applied simultaneously to multiple images, even if on different pages. Soft Proof – Saving time, reducing errors and enhancing customer satisfaction, the Soft Proof function allows the PSP, prior to production, to provide the print buyer with an exact digital preview of the physical document to be printed. Using the function, a document is prepared for production, media are assigned, page programming is applied and finishing is selected. A PDF file of the prepared document is then generated and sent to the print buyer, who is easily able to check that every detail of the document meets their expectations. If any errors in the prepared document are identified, the buyer can annotate the file and send it back to the PSP for correction. This process provides the print buyer with a much quicker and more convenient method of validating the prepared document pre-production and also reduces paper waste.

54 | September-October 2015 | Printing Review

PDF Boxes – Providing improved support for PDF bleed, trim and crop boxes for advanced graphic arts applications, this feature allows the PSP to preview and create or modify the size and position of the PDF boxes from the PRISMAprepare interface. The system also makes it possible to fill the bleed area with one colour selected from the system colour palette or from the document using the colour picker. Native File Support – Saving time and improving the PSP’s productivity , PRISMAprepare 6.2 can open and print Microsoft® Office documents (Word, PowerPoint® and Excel®) without converting them outside the application. Again this saves the PSP valuable time, enabling a quicker job turnaround, while also optimising the print quality by being able to control the conversion settings. ErnstJan de Bruin, European & UK Product business Developer

(PRISMA Solutions), Canon Europe said, “PRISMAprepare already has a sound reputation in the larger CRD market as a powerful, yet easy-touse, document make-ready solution. With the new version of the software, we’re introducing features and licensing to address issues faced by graphic arts customers, as well as by smaller CRDs, which enable them to improve turnaround time and production flexibility, while maximising productivity and output quality. The inclusion of the Soft Proof feature alone also makes the software excellent value for money as it gives a level of functionality only otherwise seen in significantly more expensive software packages.” Available immediately either direct from Canon or through an authorised reseller, PRISMAprepare 6.2 comes in three different types of licence: Full, Light and Solo.
