The Chinese Printing Market: The Next Big Opportunity for Digital Printing & Workflow
T
his growth in the Chinese market presents significant opportunities and threats. For equipment and supplies vendors, this growth represents an opportunity for incremental growth. For print service providers, it represents new competition and new opportunities for partnerships. China has become a country with a huge printing market and it is still growing. Its transformation into a world class manufacturing industry and world class printers is still evolving. As the cultural and creative areas of Chinese society start booming, the printing industry will have a new opportunity. More affluent Chinese will demand top quality products of all kinds and the
packaging market will take the lead in creating a huge incentive for companies striving to reach these “well off” Chinese consumers. In contrast to most of the Western World, the printing industry in China is primed to be the world’s largest print market in the next several years. While magazines, books and newspapers are in a state of decline in the West, the exact opposite is true in the world’s largest populated country. At present, China's 3D printing market is still at its initial stage, with the industry chain to be improved. For example, some core components and 3D printing materials for China-made 3D printing equipment have to be imported from overseas.
But 3D printing technologies in national defense and aviation industries have taken the lead in the world. In 2014, China's 3D printing market size approximated 4.65 billion. It is projected that in the following years the market size will still grow at an average rate of around 40%, and that it will very likely exceed RMB20 billion by 2018. Much of the recent rapid growth of the Chinese printing industry relates to developments in quality color printing for export markets, rather than in the traditional areas of packaging or simple one-color manuals accompanying products made for export. Most of China’s printers are located in Canton province along the Pearl River,
followed by those in eastern China around Shanghai and the Liao-Tong peninsula. Pearl River region printers tend to hail from Hong Kong and specialize in book manufacturing, magazine printing and packaging. Printers around Shanghai are commonly engaged in business with Pacific rim countries and are growing at nearly 20% yearly. Printers in Liao-Tong peninsula tend to focus on the Japanese market. The manufacture of printing equipment in China has steadily grown and now several well-known printing machinery companies, including Heidelberg, KBA and Mitsubishi, have each set up production lines in China. Famous printing plate manufacturers such as Kodak, Fuji and Agfa have also all invested in Chinese plants, and each reports expanding productivity. Printing Review | July-August 2016 | 3

The Providence Journal: Rejuvenated intelligence for EAE control consoles Largest flexo newspaper printer in the U.S. renews its trust in QIPC-EAE Americas to implement retrofit strategy console technologies from the outset, and has already seen one major upgrade between 2004 and 2008, when EAE was charged with retrofitting the entire control and automation technology. Amongst other things, the main press and reelstand drives were replaced with new AC drives and drive controls to match. Furthermore, all printing unit controls were renewed and the obsolete, button-operated control panels on the units superseded by touch consoles. The old control consoles simultaneously made way for EAE Baltic Star models.
QIPC-EAE Americas is delighted to have secured another retrofit order from GateHouse Media (The Providence Journal) in Providence, Rhode Island. Established in 1829, the Journal is the oldest continuously published daily newspaper in the United States. Providence is also the most important print medium in the East Coast state of Rhode Island.
T
he Providence Journal is an all-flexo paper – indeed the publisher’s own printing house in Providence is the biggest newspaper production facility using flexographic technology anywhere in the U.S. The web press consists of three identical sections. Each of these sections in turn comprises eight flexo printing units (six Journalflex units from Windmöller & Hölscher plus two KBA Colormax towers installed in the early nineties), eight KBA reelstands and a KBA folder. Apart from the Providence Journal, various editions of the Worcester Telegram &Gazette, the Cape Cod Times, The Standard Times (New Bedford), the New London Day, and the New York Daily News are also produced on this busy web press line along with five other dailies and several weekly titles. The newspaper printing line in Providence has been equipped with EAE press control and control

Next-generation PC hardware ensures optimal availability and serviceability The motivation behind the new retrofit project with QIPC-EAE Americas was that the PCs for the control consoles and the other EAE systems are gradually getting on in years and the operating system is no longer supported by Microsoft. To ensure their unbroken availability and serviceability in the future, The Providence Journal decided to upgrade both the PC hardware and the operating system of all EAE systems installed in the press. All in all, QIPC-EAE Americas will replace
ten PCs with modern computers running Windows: not only the PCs for the three EAE control consoles but also the hardware for the EAE Info reporting and logging system, the EAE Net PCs responsible for communicating control commands within and between the different press sections and the EAE Service PC. The latter acts as an access gateway to the entire EAE installation to permit remote maintenance by the manufacturer. “We’re thrilled that the Providence Journal has elected to open a new chapter in the decades-long partnership with our company”, said Ronald Reedijk, Managing Director of QIPC-EAE Americas. “The comprehensive PC upgrade will enable the press to continue operating with the accustomed reliability and efficiency while guaranteeing the future availability of spare parts and computer upgrades.” This newest retrofit order is scheduled for execution in the fourth quarter of 2016. The technicians will be required to proceed systematically and in narrow time windows; after all, there must be no disruptions to newspaper production as a result of the PC migration project at the Providence facility.
About EAE Engineering Automation Electronics GmbH: The Ahrensburg-based company is active in graphic industries, automation solutions and automation technology. The company, founded in 1962 by Richard Ewert, is the leading supplier of controls, automation solutions and software for newspaper printers. EAE’s solutions are being used in all areas of a newspaper printing plant – from pre press to the mailroom. A SUCCESSFUL DRUPA FOR GAMA INTERNATIONAL Success at Drupa for the new GAMA viscometers G33 and G34 for the viscosity control of EB inks and for the innovative solutions of internal logistics for the storage of GAMA GI sleeves
I
n the wide range of control systems presented by GAMA at Drupa – hall 10, booth D40 – we launched the new systems G33 and G34 for the control of temperature and viscosity of EB inks, used in the production of flexible packaging. On these systems was focused most of the visitors’ interest. “The flexographic printing system for EB inks was mong the news presented by the manufacturers at Drupa, within the packaging solutions”, says Sante Conselvan, Sales & Marketing Director of GAMA. “The leader companies in the sector presented this kind of machines with the GAMA systems installed for the control of the EB inks: plenty of demos were the demo carried out and they raised great interest. The advantages of these solutions lie in the lower environmental impact and in the colour stability, widened by the ink control and correction. Here the GAMA solutions come into play”. “At our booth we collected hundreds of contacts, with requests of offers both for viscometers to install on new machines and as retrofit, especially from Middle East and from Asia. The viscometer becomes an essential accessory to increase the quality and reduce the costs: goals which also emerging markets aim to”. GAMA International was there also at hall 5 - booth A16, with the new solutions of internal logistics of the GI automatic sleeve storage system series. These systems solve the problem of Sleeve storage, that require optimal conditions to avoid deformations and consequent impossibility of further use, but also solutions to move and store materials such as rotogravure cylinders, film and paper reels. The GI automatic sleeve storage system solutions are automatic and useradjustable systems for the sleeve storage, that allow the archiving on more levels with a particularly compact design. “Our commitment is to find the most suitable solution for the pruduction
needs of the client to be able to realize the tailor-made automatic storage”, comments Sergio Puoti, Sales Manager of the GAMA Logistics Division. “We are able to realize a storage in a space of 50 m2 for 5 meters of height where to conserve a thousand sleeves”. “At Drupa we sold four systems of internal logistics: considering that we presented these solutions for the first time at the fair, we are very satisfied”. Sante Conselvan concludes: “Drupa came back to its levels of eight years ago. These years our company has grown and today the GAMA viscometers are all over the world, thanks to the great work of implementation of the systems in the printing machines, to offer greater benefits to the client. We are pleased with the countless visits of the clients to our booths, which confirm the leadership role held by GAMA in the quality control sector”. About GAMA International GAMA designs and produces automatic systems for the control of inks, varnishes, glue and adhesives for Packaging, Labels and Converting. GAMA has installed more than 9,000 systems worldwide. The GAMA solutions are sold to clients of packaging, labels, newspapers, commercial print and in OEM to the manufacturers. GAMA’s headquarters are in Robbiate (Lecco, Italy) and the sales office is in Milan. Thanks to a successful partnership with I&C, GAMA consolidated it presence on the Italian market reaching through the years a leadership position. GAMA International was founded to strengthen GAMA’s presence on the international market and implement the distribution network, both for sales and post-sales. Furthermore, in 2016 GAMA Americas was founded in York (PA, US) for a stronger presence on the American market. Permapack AG teams with Esko for seamless process management Swiss firm achieves security, speed and flexibility in its overall workflow with Automation Engine and WebCenter
Process management for every type of packaging across the whole company: For Permapack AG based in Rorschach, a leading Swiss manufacturer of sophisticated packaging, process management for every type of packaging across the entire company is a must for a successful future. To that end, the implementation of WebCenter and the Automation Engine from Esko is an important step toward complete process reliability and automation of processes in packaging production. JDF-based integration with the job entry system Theurer C3, a well-known ERP/MIS trade software solution for the printing and packaging industry, now combines all work processes from the customer to sales through to production in a comprehensive process management solution. Each new project entering the plant is being processed via the modular Automation Engine workflow server and the online approval and communications tool WebCenter since May 2016. 16 | July-August 2016 | Printing Review
“
We were looking for a solution to cope with the rapid growth in the number of smaller, shorter run jobs being produced with the digital printing technologies we invested in last year. As we had been using ArtPro, Nexus and a CDI Spark 4835 platesetter with inline UV for some time, augmenting our infrastructure with a solution from Esko was virtually automatic,” says Markus Wirth, Managing Director for Flexible Packaging at Permapack. Wirth reports that the company invested nearly seven million Swiss Francs in the development of a Digital Center of Excellence and an expansion of its flexible packaging production lines at its site in Rorschach. This investment, combined with the excellent support the company received from Esko, enabled implementation of Automation Engine and WebCenter within just
three months. “Permapack is a company that is characterized by strong growth. Our joint philosophy is to integrate and optimise investments comprehensively into a unified process. Using Automation Engine and WebCenter. Thanks to this integrated solution, Permapack can now manage and more profitably produce the 20 % rise in short run production jobs that has been generated from digital printing,” explains Armand Gougay from Esko.
Benefit of high process reliability An important advantage for Permapack with this new integrated solution is that all internal and external parties involved in a project – customer, advertising agency, sales, work preparation, prepress and production – are
this disadvantage by taking time, labour and cost out of the production process.
Automation Engine The core of the Esko prepress workflow is Automation Engine, a modular workflow server that automates all projects and processes in prepress. It not only ensures a higher level of efficiency and greater throughput, but is designed in all aspects for the daily challenges that printing professionals are confronted with, by increasing quality, reducing the likelihood of errors and lowering process costs. Automation Engine has a scalable and easyto-operate client/server architecture. It can also be seamlessly integrated into any business system.
WebCenter
working with one and the same file. This results in a high level of reliability in the correction and approval process. Via the Viewer, all involved parties have the opportunity to quickly and easily compare versions. The advantages of the WebCenter approval tool are primarily being exploited internally at the moment, although several projects are already underway to integrate large customers into the process via a portal. Also important is the fact that WebCenter is not dependent on time, location and language, meaning there are no limits to Permapack’s strategy of expansion into international markets. Labels, tubular laminates, sachets, bags, films as well as wrap-around labels and much more are produced in the in-house print shop comprised of 77 conventional printing units and two digital printing systems from HP Indigo. Special challenges include data preparation for sophisticated designs from a broad range of customers, including multiple individual versions as well as the varied finishing types that are possible on the 10-colour hybrid machines. The database stores in excess of 5,000 cutting dies, as well as about 1,000 format drawings for flexible packaging options. Once these dies and templates have been created and approved using Esko SmartMarks for print production controls such as color bars and registration marks, they can be retrieved over and over again without errors. “Process reliability in comparison to manual production is disproportionately higher with Automation Engine and WebCenter. We estimate that our packaging production can now be processed at least 25% faster”, adds Wirth. For Permapack, the investment in automation solutions as a modern packaging manufacturer is essential, especially since pricing is still under pressure at the Swiss production site due to unfavourable foreign exchange rates for the Swiss Franc. Automation solutions like those from Esko help the company to compensate for
WebCenter is a powerful, web-based platform for packaging management that can be used to manage all work processes, packaging specifications, approval cycles, text contents and digital resources. It ensures secure online collaboration and allows users to manage their projects reliably as well as check, comment on and approve documents. In addition, all packaging objects in a project – including graphics, print templates, logos, images, 3D drafts with finishing effects and other packaging elements – can be securely saved in a database and inserted into the layout automatically. About Permapack (www.permapack.ch) Permapack is a successful Swiss production and supply firm under family ownership. Permapack, based in Rorschach, is multi-faceted: In the six application areas of nonfood, food, cosmetics, construction, industry and retail, products such as self-adhesive labels, composite and packaging films, adhesive tapes, sealants, DIY and garden items are produced and marketed. Grafikontrol’s drupa stand sees boom of visitors from the United States and the Middle East New PROCHECK system for print defect traceability and new MATRIX and LYNEX inspection systems achieve success in packaging markets
Grafikontrol’s participation at drupa proved to be one of the most successful, with hundreds of visitors from all over the world. Grafikontrol showed its leadership by presenting a complete range of quality control systems centered on the TQC-360° platform. These products offer continuous and complete inspection throughout the printing and post-printing process. These solutions have been adopted by major industry manufacturers including UTECO, Lombardi Converting and Amut Dolci Bielloni who installed the Grafikontrol systems on their printing presses at drupa.
V
isitors were particularly impressed with the PROCHECK system, the newest TQC-360° product presented at the show. “This innovative defect tracking system, which is currently patent pending, tracks the exact location of every defect detected during printing and lamination. This information is then sent to the slitting department and allows the operator to remove defects by automatically controlling the machine stoppage. Until now, it was the missing link in the total quality process,” comments Paolo De Grandis, sales director and business partner at Grafikontrol. Regarding the new philosophy adopted in the development of the TQC-360° products, De Grandis elaborated: “it’s a unique solution on the market and an indispensable aid which any efficient pressroom must have.” There was strong interest from packaging markets, which is where Grafikontrol’s MATRIX, LYNEX, CHROMALAB and PROCHECK systems are devoted. The demonstrations at the Grafikontrol ’s booth showed how the TQC-360° systems work in combination with each other. MATRIX is the basic component of the TQC-360° line; its primary function is to provide the highest image quality. The 6 Megapixel colour digital camera, combined with the new generation of high efficiency LED illumination, allows for snapshots of the running web. The new multitouch operator interface enables the operator to easily manage multiple
functions, including detection of defects with continuous live comparison of the image with the master image, bar code verification and colour monitoring. MATRIX is recommended for sheet-fed applications, such as folding cartons, corrugated and metal substrates. The inspection offered by LYNEX assures total quality by inspecting 100% of the printing web in real time. Roll-to-roll package printing demands defect free products and tight tolerances which means that printers need advanced quality inspection equipment to avoid embarrassing and costly customer complaints. LYNEX provides this with continuous inspection of the entire print repeat, on any substrate and in real time! It is suitable for any printing method and is
recommended for labelling and packaging. “The largest number of visitors came from the United States of America and Middle Eastern markets, which means Grafikontrol’s expanded sales network in those areas are giving positive results,” adds Paolo De Grandis. “We received important orders from these markets, some of which were unexpected. Orders also came from our European customers, including companies in France, Spain, Britain and Benelux. As expected, we also had many requests for information and offers from our Italian customers. Thousands of Grafikontrol systems are installed around the world, and the success at drupa will allow us to reach an annual result that exceeds expectations.”
About Grafikontrol Established in 1969, Grafikontrol is a recognized world leader in press controls for the graphic industry. The systems developed by Grafikontrol are installed on numerous printing presses around the world, including presses for package printing (both gravure and flexo), commercial offset, newspaper, rotogravure publication and metal decoration. In addition to selling through printing press manufacturers, Grafikontrol’s distribution is ensured by a number of sales people and sales agents, present in most of Europe, South Africa, Asia, Australia, USA and South America. In 2015, Grafikontrol North America, based in York (PA), was founded to strengthen Grafikontrol’s presence in North America. For more information, visit www.grafikontrol.it. Bruno Müller: “Our Participation at drupa Left a Convincing Impression” Bruno Müller looks back at the company’s successful participation at drupa. The CEO of Muller Martini was particularly delighted by all the positive customer feedback with regard to the booth’s concept: “The way we explained our core topic of Finishing 4.0 in a clear and impressive manner surprised many visitors.” considered the topic of digital. Positive responses from visitors are one thing, investment decisions and projects lined up are another. How satisfied are you with the sales concluded at drupa? Bruno Müller: The fair was also very successful for us in this regard. As we presented new ideas to our customers with future-driven production processes, various projects are also lined up for the future. What’s important now is to process these projects rapidly and to hopefully complete many of them. Three days before the end of drupa, the fair management announced that the next drupa will not be held in 2019 as originally planned, but in 2020 in the usual four-year cycle. How do you view this decision? The eleven eventful days at drupa are now a thing of the past, how do you rate the event from Muller Martini’s perspective? Bruno Müller: I consider it to be an outright success. We are not only highly satisfied with the number of visitors, we also received lots of positive customer feedback about how we presented our offering, both as regards our machines and our services. The way we explained our core topic of Finishing 4.0 in a clear and impressive manner surprised many visitors. Does the large number of visitors from the very first day then lead you to conclude that Muller Martini, with its key topic of Finishing 4.0 and the buzz words of consistent automation, integration, variable, customized products, touchless workflow, addressed precisely what the graphic arts industry is interested in? Bruno Müller: Yes, because I’m convinced that there is major potential for development in customized, variable and high-quality printed matter. However, it needs to be produced efficiently. We showed how to do that with specific, practical applications and demanding live presentations. That left a convincing impression on many visitors to the booth. How did the customers comment on the integrated solutions and the demos with complex hybrid products? Bruno Müller: What our visitors liked in particular was the design of the 22 | July-August 2016 | Printing Review
booth - how they were able to enter the topic of Finishing 4.0 in the tower and get a perfect overview of all our live products from a bird’s eye perspective. I met the most varied people from the graphic arts industry and from various major businesses - publishers as well as printers, representatives of management and machine operators. Many visitors had something of an “Aha!” effect from the way we presented new business models for the future at the fair. That was equally the case for visitors who already have experience in digital printing as well as for conventional printers and finishers who have not yet
Bruno Müller: It’s the right thing to do in my view. After all, we want to impress at drupa with several machines, but the expense involved is considerable. For this year’s fair, for instance, we moved more than 200 tons of material to Düsseldorf in 27 trucks on 258 pallets and invested three weeks in installing the booth. What’s more, in addition to 30 technicians, we also had more than 100 sales experts and product managers of sales companies from all continents in permanent deployment. In light of these figures, it’s understandable that we prefer the four-year cycle, and we’re now already looking forward to drupa 2020.
CEO Bruno Müller: “There’s major potential for development in customized, variable and high-quality printed matter. However, it needs to be produced efficiently. We showed how to do that in a clear and understandable manner at drupa.”

Our sales staff will be following up all these leads as and when they can.”
Menno Jansen is delighted by the course of events at what is the most important trade show for the printing industry. “In fact, it’s beyond our wildest dreams. It’s clear that the printing industry is enjoying a renaissance at the moment: the print media are alive and kicking. The impulses are not just commercial ones - in the newspaper industry too, the investment climate is improving.” QIPC-EAE’s man in charge was delighted to welcome so many visitors to the stand. “Our sales team had an incredibly busy time answering the questions of interested visitors. It was demanding, but hard work pays off in the end.”
Not only did QIPC receive the necessary orders: at EAE too, several upgrade orders were placed for existing systems. This includes one from Maroc Soir S.a. based in Casablanca, Morocco. During the first week of Drupa 2016, QIPC had already taken orders from Israel Today, Rotativos Patagonia from Argentinia and Sanmarg Pvt from India. Also during the first week, EAE received an order from German-based Funke Medien.
During the final week of Drupa 2016, QIPC received orders from Gulf News, Dubai, for an mRC-3D system for colour and cut-off register on its manroland CROMOMAN; from Merkur Zeitungsdruck AG, Switzerland, for an mRC-3D for colour and cut-off register and an IDS-3D colour control; and from Mittelrhein-Verlag, Germany, for a colour register, fan-out and

he Dutch specialist in measurement and control equipment for the printing industry, Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC), has received a new order from Omani Establishment for Press, Printing, Publishing and Distribution L.L.C. in Oman. QIPC will be responsible for installing an mRC3D system for colour register in its plant, based in the Omani capital of Muscat. Omani Establishment decided to invest in colour register because it now wants to focus its efforts increasingly on commercial products, alongside its newspaper-printing activities. Long-held desire In total, Omani Establishment will be acquiring 12 mRC-3D cameras, responsible for full automation of the colour register. The cameras will be equipped with AIMS for the automatic cleaning of the lenses. Everything will be installed on the Goss Magnum printing press with six towers. “We recently had our press upgraded to six heat-set webs”, explains M.C. The mRC-3D system now enables Omani Establishments to supply a much improved end-product and to reduce waste. At the moment, the plant - whose publications include Oman’s largest Arabic-language daily, Al Watan, and the country’s leading English-language newspaper, Oman Tribune - is experiencing problems with its register quality. On the back of the quality improvements Omani Establishments will be making, thanks to installation of the mRC-3D system, the business can now expect to have more satisfied customers and to win more commercial contracts. “Newspaper circulation is diminishing worldwide”, reports M.C. Venugopal. “The only way to survive is to minimise waste and maximise quality. We’ve put our faith in the mRC-3D achieving these objectives.” Omani Establishments anticipates that it will be able to reduce its waste by as much as forty percent with the mRC-3D. “The fact that colour register is a lot quicker, as well as retain its quality during production means we can now achieve these goals.” Printing Review | July-August 2016 | 23

Besides selling a FoldLine digital Inline Finishing System to Guam, which was exhibited at the fair and presented daily in live-demos, several hot prospect projects were initiated in the newly developed digital printing sector at drupa. The manroland web systems Service was also very satisfactory: The service promise “WE ADD VALUE.” went down well with the customers and visitors. Several service contracts were signed, including the refurbishment of a third-party machine in India. The manroland web store with its new design and extra features was greeted with much enthusiasm: A great number of customers at
The result is also satisfying: “We are very happy with the results we achieved at drupa“, says Wassermann. “Our presentation was excellent: We once again proved that we are ahead of our time. Besides our double drupa highlight, a complete digital printing workflow unit with variable Inline Finishing (i.e. our FoldLine in combination with a Prosper 6000S by Kodak), visitors were able to learn more about our consistently developing, comprehensive and customer orientated Portfolio. We were convincing through innovation in all areas, whether with existing or new model ranges, extensive service offerings with substantial added value, entry into new markets and business models or innovative software and workflow solutions. Customers were also very satisfied with our consulting expertise. Our employees constantly work on ideas together with our customers, which we always put into practice. Like for example our retrofits on third-party machines. The high intake of orders will fill our factory until 2017. This is a wonderful result and a clear sign that we meet the needs of our customers and delight the industry.”
Informa spells out the vision for IPEX 2017 Informa Exhibitions today announced further details of its plans for IPEX 2017. In addition to the innovative pricing strategy for exhibitors already announced with inclusive power and lifting arrangements, and stand size limits aimed at improving the user experience, the organisation has begun to announce how it will deliver on its promise to exhibitors of an industry-focused, value for money exhibition drawing international visitors to the NEC.
R
ob Fisher, Event Director of IPEX, said; “The printing industry has seen huge technological and organisation changes over the last decade. Some applications of print have diminished, while others have expanded in quality, volume and impact. People interact differently with print these days, and both specifiers of print and consumers of printed products have very different expectations of what it can do. We are planning an event that will show how every aspect of printing can become more relevant today than ever before.” IPEX 2017 covers all applications of printing – from signage and advertising through to packaging of finished products – and will help production staff from print management companies,
design and marketing agencies, learn the latest capabilities of printers and print technology. The exhibition, covering all kinds of print, will help printers understand what the creative industries will expect of them over the next three years and beyond. Rob Fisher continued; “We’ve been clear in our vision from day one that this exhibition will show print in action. That’s not just something we are leaving up to our exhibitors. We will have a series of features designed to strengthen the link between the creative and print industries by showing both the capabilities of the latest technologies, and the skills both groups need to learn to make the most of those capabilities, whether those are technical, marketing or management skills.” Dr Brian Minards, principal of Harrogate and London-based design
consultants Minards Associates, and Professor in the School of Advertising at Academy of Art University, San Francisco, said; “I have been attending IPEX for many years. It’s always been an excellent forum to learn about the latest ways that designers can use print and print techniques to deliver innovative advertising and packaging. Print is where design meets the real world, so to my mind it is vital that designers learn what it can do for them. The NEC makes the event easily accessible to all the main creative hubs around the UK, as well London, so I’m looking forward to seeing what innovations IPEX 2017 will have on show.” IPEX 2017 takes place from 31st October to 3rd November, 2017 at the NEC in Birmingham, and is the UK’s largest and only truly international print show. The Dorrer & Englmeier family business, which is specialised in wet varnishing and powder coating, will from now on reside on the factory premises of manroland web systems GmbH. The printing press manufacturer is to benefit from the comprehensive, longstanding experience of the new partner. For this reason it was agreed to outsource the painting works completely to Dorrer & Englmeier in order to pool expertise and make use of the existing know-how. With the expansion of their business operations, Dorrer & Englmeier will additionally act as a contract coater in Augsburg. The Power & Free plant of manroland web systems, which Dorrer & Englmeier will take over, offers fully automatic powder coating, wet varnishing, phosphate conversion coating as well as cathodic dip primer coating and a sandblast cabin. All of this will now also be available for new customers of Dorrer & Englmeier. The business expansion will create additional jobs in Augsburg.
Optimisation of production processes
The partnership with Dorrer & Englmeier is another step for manroland web sys-tems GmbH towards optimising the in-house production processes, concentration on the core business and thereby securing the leading role in the web offset printing business. “We are happy to have yet again found a strong partner for our production”, says Alexander Wasserman, director of manroland web systems. “We not only offer Dorrer & Englmeier a site that is conveniently situated and well connected to the infrastructure, but we also gain a partner who ensures an optimal material supply and the realisation of our painting work.” Dorrer & Englmeier and manroland web systems already signed the contract for the transference of the paint shop in May. All co-workers employed by manroland web systems in the paint shop will con-tinue their work with Dorrer & Englmeier. “The collaboration with manroland web systems means an expansion into new business areas for us. We are proud to be a modern, growing company and are very happy about our new partnership with manroland web systems”, the managing directors Franz and Alexander Englmeier of the Dorrer & Englmeier coating centre explain.
Cautious Optimism
The state of the European plastics industry
Despite a host of issues to tackle that range from marine waste to multiple force majeures at materials suppliers, the European plastics industry approaches K 2016 in a good state of health and with cautious optimism. But there are still many hills to climb. Printing Review | July-August 2016 | 29
Plastics industry consultant Applied Market Information (AMI) said recently that the European plastics industry “finds itself in another period of upheaval and change as it struggles to pull out of the stagnation caused first by the Great Recession in 2008-2009 and the subsequent Euro zone crisis in 2012-2013.” AMI predicts polymer demand to grow at just over 1% per year up to 2019.
Materials supply has been unstable
Processors are busier
Plastics processors across the continent last year found difficulties in obtaining raw materials. Several major polyolefin plants in Europe stood still for extended periods, and global economic and trade framework conditions made it difficult for processors to obtain materials on international markets. These factors included not only the relative weak Euro against the US dollar, but also continued strong demand for plastics in Asia and the US. Indications are that price volatility should be lower this year, however.
Prospects for the plastics processing industry across Europe appear to be improving, with trade associations in several countries reporting growth. Even in Italy, where consumption has been flat at best for some time, equipment association Assocomaplast reports a strong upward trend in orders. In Germany, even after a record year in 2014, the sector still managed to post moderate growth last year. But Dirk Westerheide, president of the country’s plastics processing sector association GKV, has lamented major hiccups in supply and very volatile price development of raw materials, particularly polyethylene and polypropylene.
The situation led to umbrella trade association European Plastics Converters (EuPC) establishing the Alliance for Polymers for Europe, to “provide detailed information on the current polymer market and help assist raw material users through its network of national plastics associations, as well as assist companies in requesting suspension of certain EU import
Supply side is content Overall, polymer producers in Europe appear to be upbeat. At Borealis, for example, CEO Mark Garrett says integrated polyolefin industry margins were at historic highs. He notes that polyolefin prices were affected by solid demand combined with a supply shortfall, in particular resulting from unplanned production stops.

duties to relieve shortages on polymer markets,” according to EuPC President Michael Kundel. In February, The Polymers for Europe Alliance launched its online Europewide customers’ satisfaction survey to award the best polymer producers for Europe. “We decided to start the Best Polymer Producers Awards for Europe in order to reestablish a good communication between users of polymers and their suppliers, which has obviously suffered lately,” says Ron Marsh, chairman of the Alliance.
Energy still costs too much Energy costs are very important for the whole of the plastics industry. Companies across German industry have been particularly vocal in their complaints – prices are among the highest in Europe – and the German chemical industry is also concerned about its falling international competitiveness, especially versus North American companies who have the
advantage of shale gas. So many eyes are now on petrochemical giant Ineos, which recently began importing ethane from the Marcellus shale field in the USA into Norway. Europe’s first shale-based polyethylene should come onto the market in a few months. Ineos is also set to begin exploration of shale gas in the UK, although it does not plan any fracking in 2016. It wants to use shale gas for energy as well as a polymer feedstock.
The circular economy On top of concerns about materials and energy supply, there is also growing awareness in Europe that more needs to be done about use, re-use, and preservation of precious plastics. Late last year, the European Commission adopted what it says is an ambitious new “Circular Economy Package” (CEP), which it says will “contribute to closing the loop of product lifecycles through greater
recycling and re-use, and bring benefits for both the environment and the economy.” The Commission has proposed revisions to legislation on waste. Key elements include a common EU target for recycling 75% of packaging waste by 2030 and a ban on landfilling of separately collected waste. “Less than 25% of plastic waste collected is recycled, and about 50% goes to landfill,” says the Commission. The PlasticsEurope trade association for plastics manufacturers has welcomed the CEP “as a step closer to resource efficiency,”but it has expressed concerns. “The European plastics industry has been calling for a legally binding landfill restriction on all recyclable as well as other recoverable post-consumer waste by 2025,” it says. “Although a 10%
target constitutes a step in the right direction, it remains a timid attempt to put an end to the landfilling of all waste which can be used a resource.” European Bioplastics (EUBP), the trade association for suppliers of bio-based plastics, was more enthusiastic about the report. It says that “forward looking sectors with strong environmental credentials and growth potential, such as bioplastics, need to be promoted.” It predicts that by 2025 production capacities of bioplastics within the EU will have grown twentyfold to 5.7 million tonnes.
A new industrial revolution? Despite all these concerns, the European plastics industry has its eyes firmly fixed on the future. Many European machinery companies are likely to have the Printing Review | July-August 2016 | 31
number 4.0 highly visible on their stands at K 2016, as they push their solutions for “smart” factories that operate within the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The 4.0 refers to Industry 4.0, a term invented in Germany in reference to what is perceived as the fourth industrial revolution – and the German government’s plan to make sure German industry is at its forefront. Proponents of Industry 4.0 say it represents a paradigm shift from centralized to decentralized production. “Industry 4.0 is above all one thing: a tremendous

opportunity that we want to take advantage of together with our customers,” says Dr Stefan Engleder, CTO of injection technology specialist Engel. He says he does not consider the word “revolution” to be very appropriate, however. “The changes that we are currently experiencing are more like an evolution,” he says. “For us, Industry
4.0 is not a new idea, but is already long-established daily practice in many areas.” Others in the sector will doubtless agree. For plastics processors too, new digital technologies offer new perspectives, says the GKV’s Westerheide. “K 2016 will provide an excellent opportunity to explore the advantages offered by the digitization of our industry,” he says.
North America: Digital Design and Automation Influence Molding Productivity Trends shaping the North American plastics industry include growing use of advanced digital design and manufacturing software and increased automation of production. Recent developments give companies throughout the product chain more ways to optimize operations, speed products to market and increase competitiveness.
S
oftware has long played a role in product and mold design, and automation has always been a way to increase production efficiency. What is different now is that more design software incorporates high-tech features such as 3-D simulation and analysis and even virtual reality imaging. These capabilities help users develop and rapidly fine-tune the manufacturability of parts and molds before money is spent cutting steel.
may combine counterintuitive properties like high strength and light weight. Since unconventional designs are often required to realize the potential of these materials, engineers need software that allows them to develop innovative shapes.
In automation, the trend is primarily one of molders adding increasingly affordable robots to their lines. For years robots were large, fast, specialized systems that were costly to acquire and required expertise to program. In what can be called a “democratization of automation,” the cost of many robots has been declining, making them ever more affordable. Programming is also simpler – in many cases it can be done with a smart phone or tablet computer. And in one advance, “collaborative robots” have been developed that are safe enough to work alongside humans and simple to program.
Rethinking Design
A number of factors influence the gains in design software and robotics. One is the digital revolution that promotes the connectivity of machines and data throughout a factory. Another is the growth of advanced materials that
Examples of suppliers that pursue advanced digital design and manufacturing capabilities include Siemens, whose NX PLM Software provides multiple features and program offerings. NX software is a platform to which designers, molders and toolmakers add on integrated software for applications throughout product development. Among the programs are design capabilities with 3-D simulations; software that calculates warping,
cooling, shrinkage and deformation in tooling design; manufacturing software for mold development; costing tools; NC software for machines; CAM software for production; and quality control software. Siemens says that NX software reduces design time an average 30%. Paul Brown, senior marketing director for the NX Product Engineering Unit, says that software integration lets users move seamlessly from concept to design qualification, mold development, and machine production. The efficiencies and cost savings in moldmaking especially can make companies more competitive with offshore mold sources. Design and Mold Simulations Another vendor of advanced Printing Review | July-August 2016 | 33
software is Dassault Systémes. Through 3-D simulation programs such as Catia, materials software like Solidworks, and Delmia, a “digital twin” program for building production lines, Dassault provides integrated capabilities that reduce product development time – 20 to 50% in the case of Solidworks, says Lotfi Derbal, senior product portfolio manager. Solidworks allows simulation so designs can be optimized before investments are made in molds and manufacturing. In mold development, Derbal says engineers can trial cooling channels, balance components, check flow and assess part quality. Catia supplies 3-D simulation programs that are process oriented, says Fabrice Agnes, engineering portfolio management director. These include Plastic Mechanical Designer, which allows rapid iterations of designs, compensates for features such as grills, ribs, reinforcements and bosses, and shows how changes affect filling, flow and other operations. Another application, Mold and Tooling Designer, allows experimentation with inserts, ejectors, cooling systems, parting lines, parting surfaces and other mold features. A recent development, which could be displayed at K2016, is Functional Generative Designer, software that allows optimization of the cooling system of a mold, whether it is made by conventional machining or by additive manufacturing (3-D printing), to improve part production and properties.
Friendly Robots Most robots are fast, repeatable and consistent. They also operate away from personnel for safety. “A robust 34 | July-August 2016 | Printing Review
robot that is able to move fast is not suitable to work beside humans,” says Sonny Morneault, U.S. national sales manager of Wittmann Battenfeld, which sells robots and primary equipment like injection presses. Morneault sees growing demand for robots, mostly machine-side systems that place inserts in molds, label parts and perform high-speed part removal. There is also a trend toward collaborative robots – lightweight platforms for assembly, loading and unloading, and packaging, which interact safely with humans. A few companies make them. One is Rethink Robotics with two models, Baxter and Sawyer. They are low cost, lightweight, and are programmed by teaching them arm movements and pressing an “enter” button on a pendant. Baxter has two arms, 7 degrees of freedom. Sawyer has one arm with 7 degrees of freedom. Each lifts up to 4 kg. Workers wheel the robots around a plant. Features include: location recognition and automatic set-up for jobs; spring-powered actuators for force control; arm sensors
that measure spring deflection during motion and adjust the arm motor to compensate for it; and self-programming. They also have sensors that detect if a worker comes too close; if so, the robots stop operation. The company says the return on investment with the robots is usually only months. Conventional robots are becoming more versatile. One area cited by Morneault is in the collection and transmission of production data. He notes, however, that few customers use this technology, and then only for internal use. Advances in design software and robotics offer just a snapshot of the activity underway in the North American plastics industry. Yet the impact they are having and the potential they create for developments such as the Factory of the Future and other productivity-enhancing trends is considerable. These capabilities, which will be on display at K 2016, could well lay the foundation for greater levels of productivity and economy the industry will continue to require.

IN A UK FIRST, FUJIFILM ANNOUNCES MAJOR FLENEX FW PARTNERSHIP WITH ESSEX-BASED REPRO HOUSE, MPH LTD
I
n a major UK first, Fujifilm has announced today that during drupa 2016 it signed a partnership deal with Essex-based pre-press experts, MPH Ltd. The partnership will see this respected reprographic house, which provides prepress services to a wide range of customers in the packaging sector, join a growing number of customers from across the world who are turning to Fujifilm’s high-productivity, high-quality, Flenex FW water-washable plates. This technologically sophisticated solution offers users the combined benefits of increased up time; reduced environmental impact; proven performance in the field; quality without compromise, and lower cost in use. Says MPH director Brian Cawdron: “Having seen the plate in action, and the multiple benefits it can bring to the business, we’re confident that Flenex FW will be a great fit for our customers, and we’re excited to be able to add it to our portfolio. We’re a fast turnaround business, and our customers know and respect us for this, so we’re always interested in products that are going to help us to continue to deliver what our customers need, when they need it. “Also important to us was the reduced environmental impact – even when compared with other water-washable plates, as Flenex washes clean in simple dishwashing detergent.” The quality on offer with Flenex FW was a major consideration as well. Cawdron continues: “With Flenex FW, Fujifilm has some really innovative technology which allows a flat top dot effect to be achieved very simply. This results in noticeably cleaner and brighter print results which our customers will love.” James Whitehead, Product Manager at Fujifilm UK explains further: “The plates contain a special rubber-based compound that
offers a number of significant advantages over materials used in rival flexo plates. Crucially, as this compound is not oxygen sensitive, the effect of oxygen in the air on the dot shape is kept to an absolute minimum, meaning printers can achieve a 1% flat top dot without costly and complex oxygen elimination processes. This results in lower dot gain, while the superior ink transfer produces results of noticeably higher quality.” Whitehead continues: “After a hugely successful drupa 2016 for Flenex FW, we’re delighted that such a respected name in the UK reprographic market has opted to become the UK trailblazer for this proven technology solution. We look forward to a long a successful partnership, from which MPH’s many customers will be the ultimate beneficiaries.”

WKS orders its 2nd ContiwebVision System for Wassenberg facility Web break analysis system is vital tool in optimizing efficiency System diagnostics provide information for future prevention Corporate headquarters receives real-time production data feed
O
ne of Europe's leading high-volume printers, the WKS Group, has stipulated ContiwebVision web break analysis as an essential component for its latest installation at its facility in Wassenberg, North-West Germany. The decision follows the successful introduction of the system on an almost identical press line in 2013. Holger Backes is the WKS project manager for the entire double web installation and was also a key player behind the original specification in 2013. He is convinced that ContiwebVision is the best web break detection technology on today's market and confirms that it is the only sensible choice for the scale of production at Wassenberg. "Each web in our existing press line measures 2250 mm (88.6 inch) wide, giving it the largest paging capacity in the world," Backes explains. "We run the presses simultaneously into one folder at up to 50,000 revolutions per hour and each revolution uses 11.2 m2 (120.6 sqft) of paper. Obviously, with production on this scale we need to ensure our press operators have the very best control capabilities at their fingertips. ContiwebVision allows them to see what is happening to the webs on both levels in real time, precisely pinpointing the source of a disruptive event." While this clarity and ease of use is of crucial importance, it is not the most significant USP for WKS: "Other systems can tell you immediately
there is a web break and some also tell you where it happened, on top of this ContiwebVision is the only system that can tell you why the web break happened and informs the operator how they can prevent it from happening again," comments Backes. "When you're printing 560,000 m2 of paper per hour and it takes an average of 45 minutes to get the presses running again after a stop, this information is the golden ticket." Receiving up to 50 signals from cameras and sensors strategically positioned throughout the press line - from web infeed through splicer, including web severer and web catcher, printing units, dryer, chill stand, turner bars and folder to outfeed - the ContiwebVision web break analysis system in Wassenberg gathers data to continuously monitor web edges, web tension and overall condition of the web. This information enables the system to determine factors including time and location and paper variations. Immediately on detecting the small changes in web tension that indicate a web break, the system correlates all data to generate a report, which can be viewed both locally and remotely via VPN. The ContiwebVision system in Wassenberg, close to the Dutch border, is linked to WKS administrative headquarters 100 km away in Essen. The seamless link means that administration executives are alerted immediately of any web break. If a paper fault is detected, the press operator sends an automatic report to the accounts department with the push of a button, enabling a compensation claim to be submitted to the paper supplier within minutes. "In fact, this scenario is relatively rare in Wassenberg," Holger Backes admits. "We are printing 24/7 on very

lightweight stock, typically between 40 - 65 gsm so the web breaks are more usually due to the print dynamics such as build-up of ink and tack, water and stresses on the web on its journey through the machine. "Nevertheless, the information we get from the ContiwebVision reports has proved very valuable," he adds. "Our 160-page press here now has the lowest incidence of web breaks of all the eight presses operating in Wassenberg and Essen. On our best day, the press printed 320 tonnes of paper, running non-stop for 24 hours." This record helps to make the repeat investment in an identical press system much less daunting, according to Backes. The new installation, currently underway, is scheduled to be complete by winter 2016, producing more advertising circulars for supermarkets and other retailers. With the new press in full production, output in Wassenberg is expected to grow from 4.2 billion 16-page A4 pieces in 2015 to reach 6.0 billion in 2017.

oss International has announced that specialist catalog printer, Arandell of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, will install its sixth Goss Sunday Press in Q4 2016, further expanding its market-leading production capabilities to service new business. With 70 new titles awarded in 2016,
"As a long-standing Goss customer and early adopter of the Sunday technology, adding another Goss Sunday press to our extensive pressroom line-up was a natural step as demand for our products grew again last year," explained Brad Hoffman, president and CEO, Arandell. "Our clients require exacting color and it is our experience that the Sunday Press is one of
the few presses in the world that can deliver precise color at the speeds we require." The speeds and high-productivity of the Sunday press can be largely attributed to two pioneering Goss innovations - gapless blankets and pinless folders. Gapless blankets eliminate print defects such as bump streaking, doubling and web flutter, allowing faster printing on wider webs with premium quality. Arandell's Goss Sunday 2000 will be configured with a PPF-3.2 pinless former folder. The pinless folder reduces the non-print area on the cylinder, allowing Arandell to
"Any solutions to reduce waste at our production facilities fit perfectly into our environmental policies," added Hoffman. "Being environmentally-responsible is just one way Arandell is focused on the future. Having been at the helm of this innovative, forward-thinking company for two years now, we have already made some significant operation efficiencies to ensure we stay competitive and continue to provide the best possible service for our customers. "This latest addition to our cuttingedge pressroom is yet another demonstration of our commitment to efficient production processes and our rigorous approach to product quality. Partnering with Goss has been crucial to our success to date and moving forward, bolsters our confidence in the future."

Addition to product portfolio brings fast, accurate spectrophotometer technology to individual Packaging print houses
Q
uadTech, Inc. announced a breakthrough color technology that will allow more print operations to utilize advanced inline spectral measurement on film, paper, or board. Using a 31-bin spectrophotometer, Color Measurement with DeltaCam offers full spectral measurement for CI flexo, inline flexo, and gravure presses. "Until now, printers have had to spend a great deal of time in makeready stopping the press many times to measure color and determine if they are within spec," said Isaam Lutfiyya, QuadTech
Manager of Business Development. "For an accurate color measurement on a flexo or gravure press, they had to measure a sample that was run at production speed. This increased waste because they had to run the press up to speed, shut it down, remove the sample and measure it offline." Accurate inline color measurement enables printers to reduce time and waste while confidently maintaining color throughout the roll-without the need to wait for a roll change to measure with a handheld device. Color Measurement with DeltaCam enables operators to spot problems early and make corrections quickly, thus minimizing waste, customer complaints, and rebates. DeltaCam is capable of performing at web

speeds up to 610 m/min (2000 ft/ min) and on web widths up to 2,200mm (87 inches), reading a single 5mm x 5mm color patch. The intuitive ICON-based user interface is identical to the performance-proven Color Measurement with SpectralCamTM. The SpectralCam product tier is designed for printers who require faster press speeds and as many as 10-12 simultaneous color measurements; which is ideal for measuring color bars on offset applications. DeltaCam uses advanced LED illumination for extended life and color temperature control, which creates ideal conditions for precise color measurement. The proprietary design reduces stray light, greatly increasing color measurement
The new system delivers excellent inter-instrument agreement with the most widely used handheld instruments. With an optional web stabilizer (required for film), agreement of less than 1?E00 is achieved. The web stabilizer uses a patented technique to stabilize the substrate and measure over a certified ceramic backing tile for accurate color measurementwithout the need for any mechanical positioning devices that may stretch or otherwise damage the film. Color control and reporting capabilities are available when the DeltaCam system is paired with QuadTech's ColorTrackTM with InkControlTM, also debuted at drupa 2016."Now you don't have to be a global multinational print house to afford the industry's most advanced inline spectral color measurement," said Mr. Lutfiyya. "As with other technology in the QuadTech portfolio, DeltaCam ensures that no out-of-spec product gets to the customer, and automates the process of achieving precise color accuracy and consistency job-tojob."

Goss Contiweb Announces Latest Innovation to Optimize Efficiency in Print Drying Contiweb Fluid Applicator (CFA) offers more control and immediate cost savings Additional longer-term savings through reduced equipment wear and maintenance
N
ow standard or retrofittable on Ecocool and Ecoset dryers Drupa, June 1st 2016 - At drupa 2016, Goss International (Hall 15, stand D51) is showing the latest innovation in its industry-leading range of heatset drying systems. New Contiweb Fluid Applicator (CFA) technology offers significant cost benefits for web offset printers, enhances print performance and productivity, and contributes to a better finished product. Now supplied as an option on new Ecocool and Ecoset models, the CFA system is also available for retrofitting on existing installations of these models and stand-alone silicone application. A demonstration unit on the Goss Contiweb booth guides visitors through its breakthrough approach to the application of silicone oil and water to restore moisture to the printed web and protect against ink picking on the surface of the chill rollers. Silicone is necessary to protect the web from mechanical stress and for better runability though the folder. As well as cutting unnecessary expense, the CFA system offers a solution to issues which might result from consumables commonly used in the drying process, according to Bert Schoonderbeek, Managing Director, Goss Contiweb. "Up until now, printers have been using ‘ready mixed' silicone/water products," explains Schoonderbeek. "These are provided by a wide array of chemicals and additives in different formulations and standards. They can also cause maintenance issues and contamination in the silicone mix system and folder long term.
With the CFA system, we're giving the printer back more control and also cost benefits." Treating the web with a silicone/ water mixture (silicone and remoistening) in one process was developed by Contiweb engineers in 2004, and since then, has become considered by many highquality print professionals to be essential in ensuring best-quality results. The combined process replaces water that has evaporated from the paper during drying to restore the original dimensions of the substrate. It also avoids web shrinkage, as well as reducing instances of cracking, curling or folding, and delivering an overall more forgiving substrate for postpress handling. The new Contiweb Fluid Applicator now introduces the ability to mix pure silicone oil with water on-thefly within one system. By delivering a fresh mix which is used immediately, only a single agent is required as surfactant, which helps to control the delicate balance required for maintaining uniformity and consistency of the web. The oil drops in the mixture are extremely
large compared to standard silicone emulsions. The result is that the oil is not absorbed by the paper, but stays on top where it offers a much better protection. On average a reduction of 50 % in silicone oil consumption is documented. In addition to the performance benefits, the new system offers considerable financial gains, including approx. 60 percent savings on the current cost of silicone, which can be equivalent to around •50,000 per year for the consumption associated with a 64page press. Based on the same production model, the reduction in terms of transportation is just 15 containers versus 80 per year. The use of pure silicone oil and mixing on demand benefits the performance and long-term maintenance of the applicator and the folder. Applicator, control and drive rollers are all more lubricated, reducing incidence of contamina-
tion and improving the lifespan of components. With the Ecocool dryer, Contiweb was the first manufacturer to offer a single drying unit with integrated chill rolls, silicone application and optional remoistening. As well as improved ergonomics, it introduced a new level of control of the web in one closed environment, bringing with it significant advantages in quality, efficiency, productivity and cost-effectiveness. "At Goss Contiweb we have always challenged accepted practice, even when a system seems perfect," explains Bert Schoonderbeek. "The new CFA system is the latest development in this process of continuous design development. With every innovation, we aim to deliver more control and measurability to our customers so that they can be assured of consistent, repeatable results of the highest quality."

Both new HP DesignJet Z-series printers include new HP DesignJet Click printing software to optimize time and simplify printing by enabling radically simple, one-click printing for all PDF, JPEG, TIFF, and HPGL/2 files from a PC or Mac to the HP DesignJet Z-series printers.(7,8) The software helps cut media costs with features like nesting and file error warnings, and users can now be more productive with real-time previews, along with driverless and multipage/multi-file PDF printing of posters, roll-up banners, CAD drawings, maps, and info-graphic presentations. With more than 3 million HP DesignJets installed around the world, it is hard to imagine that this printing revolution began 25 years ago with HP reinventing large-format design to launch the first inkjet largeformat printer in 1991. This achievement is a reminder for HP to continue to reinvent the printing market and continually pioneer new technologies. Design is in the DesignJet name, so as HP looks to the next 25 years, the company will strive to find solutions and identify new possibilities, keeping technical and graphic design professionals needs at the center of innovation.
