Temprina Media Grafika orders new sixtower Goss press to address continuing growth of Jawa Pos Innovative media group with close to 900 Goss printing units installs new Goss Community press to boost production capacity

T

emprina Media Grafika, a subsidiary of leading Indone sian Jawa Pos Media Group, has installed a new six-tower, twofolder single-width Goss Community SSC press at its printing facility in Solo City, Central Java in order to boost production capabilities for more sections and more color. TMP is part of Jawa Pos Media Group headquartered in Surabaya, East Java. The Group is among the world’s largest Goss press users, with approximately 900 Goss units in operation across Indonesia. “We are very satisfied with the combination of quality, reliability and flexibility of our Goss presses. The press is easy to operate, strong, and we can always find any support and parts. We have a 60 year-old Goss press that is still running in full production. We also like the idea that Goss is using industrial-standard electrical equipment which makes it easier for us to get support anywhere across the islands,” comments Agus Suryo, General Manager of Temprina Media Grafika. Jawa Pos has seen continued growth over the years to become one of the leading newspaper publishers and the biggest media network in Indonesia, comprising a TV network of 20 channels. With a combined circulation of over one million copies per day, it prints more

than 150 local newspapers and 20 weekly tabloids, as well as the largest national daily newspaper, the Jawa Pos, printed in 80 different cities across Indonesia. This is also supported by the company’s own paper mill and power plant in an integrated facility alongside the Surabaya printing site. “We are very proud of our dynamic and innovative leadership style that has enabled us to become the leading brand in this region,” explains Suryo. “Embracing the younger population, we were the first newspaper in Indonesia to have a section dedicated to younger readers which was a great success. To maintain our leadership we need to keep improving our print quality and capability, and investing in the right equipment is essential.” According to Suryo, Jawa Pos also maintains a central focus on its role within the community. As well as spearheading social and environmental campaigns, the newspaper

has recently launched the Development Basketball League (DBL), Indonesia’s biggest competition for students, and constructed a stadium next to the Surabaya newspaper office. Under the leadership of Dahlan Iskan, Jawa Pos has been transformed from a small newspaper in 1982 to one of the largest media groups in Asia today. Jawa Pos readership has risen steadily in this time, including a five-year period of growth which saw the circulation rise from just 6,000 copies to over 300,000 copies. Now Jawa Pos has around 500 000 readers spread from Java Island to Bali. Dahlan Iskan now serves as Indonesia’s Minister of State-owned Enterprises, and the newspaper is led by his 35 year-old son, Azrul Ananda. Jawa Pos continues to win many awards including World Young Reader Newspaper in 2011 by WAN-Ifra, and last year achieved an unparalleled growth of 14 percent.

Polish packaging printer invests in KBA technology once again

ntropak on growth curve with sixcolour Rapida 105 hybrid press

Packaging printer Intropak Plochocki & Wspólnicy Sp.j. in Celestynów, near Warsaw, fired up a six-colour KBA Rapida 105 with coater and delivery extension at the beginning of this year. The press is equipped for mixed operation with conventional and UV inks as well as finishing with water-based and UV coating. With this investment the 40-year-old firm reaffirmed its successful partnership with KBA. Intropak has an excellent market position in carton printing. Its broad customer base consists of clients from the music, cosmetics, food and electronics industry, as well as from other branches including publishing. Along with printing and finishing, Intropak offers various finishing services, such as coating (including UV), laminating, gold blocking, embossing, and window cutting and gluing. The new Rapida 105 has paved the way for further finishing effects. Intropak’s manage-

6 | march-april 2014 | printingreview

ment made a conscious decision to invest in a hybrid press which enables the use of conventional and UV inks in combination with various types of coating. Proprietor Dariusz Plochocki:“We have used press technology and services from KBA for over twelve years. Press and process technology were also deciding factors which made us place an order for the new Rapida 105 at KBA’s Polish subsidiary KBA CEE once again. Along with a larger sheet format, this press offers us a nearly endless array of possibilities in terms of inline finishing, which we aim to exploit fully.” The Rapida 105 at Intropak is mounted on a 450mm (17.7in) plinth for printing packaging and is equipped with additional board and film packages which handle a maximum stock thickness of 1.2mm (48pt). Automatic plate changing, CleanTronic Multi and CleanTronic UV washing systems as well as nonstop rollers in the delivery all contribute to

short makeready times. The press features VariDry IR/TA/UV dyers in the delivery extension and delivery as well as a UV interdeck dyer which can be positioned freely between the printing units. In addition, ErgoTronic ColorControl for measuring colour density, ErgoTronic Lab for colour measurement and control based on Lab values as well as QualiTronic ColorControl for inline quality control all ensure a consistent high quality and low waste levels. “With its extensive kit our new Rapida 105 has much more potential than its predecessors,” Dariusz Plochocki concludes. “It allows us to expand our product portfolio. We are confident this new mediumformat press will deliver a boost in quality and output, which was the case with our previous KBA presses.” Along with the Rapida 105’s high level of productivity, inline quality control was of particular importance to Intropak and it is an integral pillar

of the firm’s internal quality management in accordance with ISO 9001. This new investment is part of an extensive package of measures aimed at improving production processes and the performance of the entire printing house. “All of this, including a three-shift production schedule, contributes to a high level of customer satisfaction in Poland and abroad,” co-owner Katarzyna Kulisz adds. “It is important to our customers that we invest continually in cutting-edge technology and thus able to offer packaging with a special flair and added value.” Jan Korenc, managing director of KBA CEE: “We are very pleased that Intropak, a firm with a good reputation not only in Poland but also internationally, opted for a hybrid sheetfed offset press from KBA. This press facilitates production with a raft of inks and coating. We hope that the new Rapida 105 will contribute to the dynamic development of Intropak, just like the firm’s previous KBA presses have done.”

drupa Global Trends report: Global investment in the print industry will be stronger in the next 12 months as confidence returns.

T The printing industry is in the midst of a transition from a product-driven industry to a service-driven one. The demand for new solutions and business models that better reflect the customer needs is clear.

8 | march-april 2014 | printingreview

he first drupa Global Trends report provides analysis of the printing and media sector worldwide. drupa will publish two report series entitled “drupa Global Trends” and “drupa Global Insights,” that will study for the first time the trends and major changes in the international print and media sector at both global and regional levels. The results will be based on answers provided by a representative panel consisting of leading executives from printers, suppliers and print purchasers from around the world, recruited primarily from the drupa 2012 visitor and exhibitor database. Messe Düsseldorf, in its role as drupa organiser, has appointed two independent consulting and market research companies Printfuture (UK) and Wissler & Partner (Switzerland) to conduct these two report series. The first “drupa Global Trends” report is now published. Despite reporting significant regional variations, the “drupa Global Trends” report does reveal a number of critical – and sometimes surprising – trends that are shared by all economic regions and across print segments (Publishing Packaging and Commercial). As was to be expected, the report confirmed that

the global printing industry’s structural transformation is still ongoing, with increasing costs coupled with declining prices and shrinking margins. However, three other major findings of the study are more pivotal: 1. There are clear signs that economic conditions are improving. As a consequence the printing industry globally is planning increased investment over the next twelve months. Efficiency gains and the development of new services are driving investment in the industrialised countries. North America is leading the way by gearing up for major transformation with high levels of investment in printing technology, IT and new services. In the emerging countries growing demand is the main driver. 2. The printing industry is in the midst of a transition from a productdriven industry to a service-driven one. The demand for new solutions and business models that better reflect the customer needs is clear. 3. As expected, digital printing plays an increasing role in the technology mix deployed. Among print services providers, 65% produce using both conventional and digital methods

Some 2,500 decisionmakers from across the globe (119 countries) participated in the survey in the fourth quarter of 2013 and answered the extensive questionnaire. The majority (58%) came from print services providers, followed by suppliers (21%) and print purchasers (21%).

and one-third of commercial printers already gain a quarter or more of their turnover from digital printing. But conventional printing (especially sheet-fed offset) continues to be an important pillar for the print sector. Planned investment reflects this point as 29% of all printers say they intend to invest in sheet-fed offset printing. “Thanks to these two report series, drupa is able to offer first-rate, representative market data and information that will enable the market players – be they providers of print services, suppliers or print purchasers – to make better strategic decisions. In addition the

reports will allow variations between the world’s major economic regions to be analysed. Finally the insights gained will serve to further improve drupa’s positioning,” says Werner M. Dornscheidt, the President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf. This first drupa “Global Trends” report provides an initial assessment of the state of the global print industry In order to monitor the trends going forward, the survey will be repeated in the fourth quarter each year. In parallel drupa will publish a series of “Global Insight” reports that will offer detailed analysis into specific industryrelevant topics. An “Insights” report

on “The Impact of the Internet on Print” will kick off the series in June of 2014. The objective will be to show the effects of the Internet on e-commerce, digital marketing, mass customisation and IT on the world of print and illustrate how future strategies and business models need to adapt. Some 2,500 decision-makers from across the globe (119 countries) participated in the survey in the fourth quarter of 2013 and answered the extensive questionnaire. The majority (58%) came from print services providers, followed by suppliers (21%) and print purchasers (21%).

Ipex 2014: Spotlight on London T

he return of Ipex to London in March 2014 is adding up to be a welcome capital gain for exhibitors and visitors alike. Ipex, the UK’s flagship print and communications event will be reunited with the nation’s capital city when it opens its doors at the custom-built ExCeL International Exhibition & Convention Centre in London’s Docklands in March 2014. London has always enjoyed an iconic international status, where its rich and varied history sits alongside global business. Progressive redevelopment and investment of infrastructure continues to keep London at the centre of the global community. The addition of ExCeL in London’s Docklands, new rail, road and air transport links, the incursion of both the financial services and media sectors, as well as the enduring legacy of the £9bn investment in London’s 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, has transformed the area into the City’s commercial heartland.

Open for business Whilst London is still every bit as much the home of heritage landmarks such as Westminster Abbey, The Houses of Parliament and ‘Big Ben’, the London of the 21st century is now ranked as one of the world’s most preferred cities in which to stage meetings and events. And, as one of the world’s top three financial centres, London continues to attract business visitors from outside the UK, who now contribute 27% of London’s overseas tourism economy; just short of £3bn per annum. 18 | march-april 2014 | printingreview

London is now geared to facilitate Ipex’s smooth transition back to the capital. The ExCeL exhibition centre itself is located at the heart of an integrated infrastructure tailored to meet the requirements of the international business community. Sharing a specific affinity with the broadening media and crosschannel interests represented within the evolving Ipex community itself is London’s fast-developing ‘Tech City’ digital hub: populated by a dynamic mix of blue-chip IT and social networking players such as Microsoft, Cisco, Facebook, Google and entrepreneurial start-ups, and the recipient of a UK Government £50m development grant. Today, there are over 23,000 IT companies based throughout London; more than in any other European city. Equally in tune with the Ipex community is London’s highly developed creative media communications sector spearheaded by some of the worlds’ most innovative and respected advertising agencies including Saatchi & Saatchi, Euro RSCG, Ogilvy and Leo Burnett. Directly employing over 400,000 designers, programmers and copywriters, the city’s creative industries collectively generate annual revenues of almost £20bn, and are already playing a key role in shaping Ipex’s onward evolution. Says Ipex Event Director Trevor Crawford, ‘In our predominantly digital world, print is continuously adapting to compete against an ever-expanding menu of communi-

cations technologies. This has been a key strategic factor for including a cross media production focus on multi-channel messaging media as an integral part of Ipex 2014.’ With over 40% of the city’s working population not British-born and over 300 different languages habitually spoken on a daily basis, London provides a unique office from office environment, which according to London’s Mayor Boris Johnson, ‘the best European if not global city in which to do business.’ Arguably the city’s greatest ambassador, this current Mayor is also a regularly published print and broadcast media journalist who is naturally taking great interest in welcoming Ipex visitors and exhibitors back to the nation’s capital city in March, branding it ‘the Olympics of the global Printing Industry'.

A centre of ExCeLlence If London is the best UK city for business, then ExCeL has likewise developed as the country’s best venue in which to do it, boasting events as diverse as the London Boat Show and the world travel market to staging many Olympic and Paralympic events. In the six years since it opened, the venue has almost doubled its size to 100,000 m² following its acquisition by the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC). ExCeL’s two halls are centrally connected by a boulevard running the entire length of the complex, providing free and reliable Wi-Fi and containing 40 bars, restaurants and eateries. For a major event like Ipex, the boulevard, which will host

‘Inspiration Avenue’, will become very much part of the event and part of the Ipex community experience.

Trains and boats and planes An essential part of ExCeL’s appeal is the immediately adjacent commercial and retail network that has evolved in tandem. Ipex visitors will be instantly struck by the marked contrast in exterior ambience with other exhibition centres regularly utilised on the international graphic arts event circuit.. In addition to the profusion of local food service and retail outlets grouped around the traffic-free walkways right outside the ExCeL, the £1.6bn Westfields shopping centre is only a ten-minute ‘tube

ride’ away; accommodating over 40bn visitors a year - and for those who might be feeling lucky, housing the UK’s biggest casino. ExCeL is also arguably easier to get to and from than any other major venue too. In addition to its direct links with six UK-based international airports, the centre is equally, if not more, accessible to passengers on longer-haul flights from North America and Asia Pacific. Able to transfer straight into City airport via European hubs at Frankfurt and Schiphol (Amsterdam), ExCeL is barely a five-minute cab ride or a shuttle bus away, with easy

transport links to and from London Heathrow Airport. Upgraded rail transport has been one of the most immediate and beneficial legacies accruing through the staging of the Olympic Games increasing the capacity of the Docklands Light Railway network (DLR) by 50% – within which ExCeL has its own two dedicated stations (Custom House and Prince Regent) – and the ‘Javelin’ connecting nearby Stratford International, just a single-stop train ride away from ExCeL, to the Eurostar rail terminal at St Pancras. A more leisurely route to ExCeL from central London (Chelsea

Harbour) that Ipex visitors should definitely consider taking is the 40 minute boat ride via the River Thames. Whichever mode of transport you opt to take, make London your oyster quite literally by arming yourself with the smartcard of the same name. Aside from saving you the time and trouble of juggling a foreign currency, a pre-purchased Oyster card (www.oystercard.com) swiped at the point of entry and exit of any bus, boat, tube or train will see you safely on your way – and at almost half the standard cost of travel.

O2 be in London ... at ‘Ipex City’ Many overseas visitors to worldclass trade events like Ipex held in London habitually extend their stay for additional business after the exhibition has concluded; often also returning with their families to enjoy the unparalleled leisure and entertainment opportunities that London famously offers to all its annual 16m + tourists alike. There are 14,000 hotel rooms within the immediate vicinity of ExCeL which have been reserved exclusively for Ipex visitors to book, with overall capacity throughout the city now in excess of 120,000 beds. On the south bank of the river stands the O2 Arena, which will be the hub of ‘Ipex after hours’: one of the world’s busiest and most successful entertainment venues, and accessible from the alternate side of ExCeL London via the Emirates airline sponsored cable-car system. With a crossing every 15 seconds, each cable car traverses the river at a height of 90 metres on a 10 minute journey which affords a unique view of London’s transformed docklands. The must-play venue for every world class music act, the O2 also houses over 20 different bars and restau-

rants catering to all tastes; its own eleven-screen multiplex cinema incl. the largest 3D viewing image in Europe; and a unique permanent museum celebrating the history of British popular music. It’s that ease of accessibility belying London’s big city status that makes a visit such an enjoyable experience 24/7. The Houses of Parliament, Covent Garden and the City’s renowned West End are all less than 30 minutes away, while back at ‘Ipex City’, there’s cold beer on tap in the ExCeL boulevard and a wealth of opportunities for eating, relaxing and networking once the show’s closed in the evening right here in the immediate vicinity of the centre – now popularly being referred to as the ‘Neustadt’! Whether visiting Ipex for business, pleasure or both, visitors can access all their travel, visa, accommodation and after hours requirements online at www.ipex.org, which has been designed to make a visit to Ipex 2014 hassle-free. Wherever you find yourself to be, London is a city that doesn’t need to promote itself, so there’s never been a better time to capitalise on what Ipex 2014 and London has to offer.

Rheinisch Bergische Druckerei expands its KBA Cortina with a coater Classy publications in waterless coldset with inline coating

R

heinisch Bergische Druckerei (RBD) in Düsseldorf has already been using a KBA Cortina to print the regional daily Rheinische Post in a waterless offset process for the past four years. Further products are advertising freesheets, diverse special publications and supplements on the most varied papers – all in exceptionally high print quality. To expand the range of magazines, news brochures and other commercial-like products which can be handled on the compact Cortina, the press has now been equipped with an inline coater. The new facility has been in successful production since the beginning of February 2014. RBD managing director Matthias Tietz, a committed and longstanding advocate of ecologically aware newspaper and semi-commercial printing in waterless offset, is delighted with the new level of quality achieved since incorporation of the coater into the KBA Cortina: “The products finished inline with dispersion coating on the Cortina look very impressive, and that without any need for an energy-intensive hot-air dryer. The coater has added significantly to our already very broad product portfolio. We can now offer classy publications which satisfy even those customers who are endlessly meticulous when it comes to print and processing quality, and that will help us to further improve capacity utilisation on our Cortina line.”

22 | march-april 2014 | printingreview

Inline coating brings many benefits Compared to a typical commercial heatset process, inline finishing with dispersion coating in a coldset press saves not only energy, but also expensive floor space. The inline coating option, which is currently only feasible in waterless offset, is economically a very attractive proposition for short to medium runs, an increasingly important market segment as target group orientation becomes ever more prevalent. Coated print products stand out with bold colour, greater depth and a pleasant

feel. The coating provides effective protection against the often unavoidable smearing and set-off when producing coldset products with high ink coverage and images run over the fold. The quality benefits of waterless offset in respect of gamut, register and finer screens are further enhanced in conjunction with coating. With a higher ink coverage, for example, it is possible to achieve significantly greater contrast. Productivity is also boosted at the downstream postpress stages, as the elimination of smearing risks permits immediate

further processing without loss of speed. It is furthermore possible to merge coated and non-coated webs, or to combine normal and improved newsprint in a single product. Convenient console operation The coater unit, which was developed by KBA in cooperation with Harris & Bruno, is incorporated at the top of a compact four-high tower and applies coating to both sides of the web over the desired width. It comprises two anilox rollers with chamber blades and two

rubber rollers. The water-based dispersion coating from Sun Chemical permits fast drying even at the high production speeds of a web press. The drying process is influenced by the web path, the web speed and the type of paper. To be able to process as wide a spectrum of papers as possible, a compact infrared/hot-air dryer module from Eltosch is integrated into the superstructure after the coater. It is thus possible to apply coating to almost all normal and improved coldset papers. The coater and the auxiliary dryer module are controlled conveniently from the KBA press console; retrofitting to an existing Cortina installation is possible at any time.

Three new Goss Sunday insert presses bring Creps back up to speed with benefits

N

ew presses chosen to streamline production of high-volume inserts Sunday technology offers greater flexibility and efficiency Following a devastating fire in October 2012, Creps United Publications has completed the installation of three new Goss Sunday insert presses, revitalizing the company’s entire production capabilities. A new 100,000ft2 (9290m2) facility in Indiana, Pennsylvania is now home to two Goss Sunday 2000i presses (57in/145cm width) and a Goss Sunday 3000i (66in/168cm width) press, along with the company’s prepress department and general offices. Creps chose the new presses based on their suitability for modern insert formats, their ability to deliver high volumes and to streamline throughput in line with the company’s vision for the future. “The time, waste and labor saving technologies of the Sunday presses are making us more efficient and helping us to improve our margins as well as our print volumes,” says Jake Creps, a partner at Creps United Publications. “With all three presses now in production, we have a total print capacity of more than 4 million pages per hour. “We’re especially pleased that we can match the output of doublecircumference presses without the need for double plating. The Sunday 3000i can handle page widths up to 11 inches (27.9cm), while the Sunday 2000i presses will run the new, narrower formats very efficiently.” All three new presses feature

gapless blankets, automated closed-loop controls and Goss QPL semi-automatic plate loading technology. In addition, individual servo motor drives mean that Creps operators can change all the plates simultaneously, rather than one at a time, further increasing efficiency.

United are in the 3-5 million copies range, printing at speeds up to 85,000 impressions per hour. The new makeready efficiencies introduced with the Sunday technology now also allow Creps to achieve more cost-effective production of shorter, targeted runs.

Plans for 2014 include duplexing one of the Sunday 2000i presses with the Sunday 3000i for increased product flexibility and pagination.

“Recently, it’s been hard for insert printers to invest in new technology because the margins have been so tight, but the Sunday technology makes a compelling investment argument,” according to Creps

According to Jake Creps, pressroom acceptance of the Goss Sunday technology has been unanimous: “The new presses have been received with great enthusiasm, without exception. All our operators have been raving about the high quality, repeatability and efficiency and how much easier it is for them to achieve these targets,” he said. “We’ve been very well supported by Goss throughout this process.” Typical long runs for Creps

As for the future of advertising inserts themselves, Jake Creps is very positive. “Retailers have a hard time pulling customers in with e-mail and on-line marketing alone, and inserts continue to offer a proven, cost-effective way to push advertising to the customers,” he explains. “In the future, there may be some more personalization or targeting of each ad, but in general,

Howard (left) and Jacob Creps (right), partners at Creps United Publications

large-scale distribution of printed inserts will remain a very costeffective media option, and I’m confident about the future of our market.”

FESPA Brasil 2015 Announces its Second Expansion

F

ESPA and APS Feiras & Eventos announce the second expansion of the FESPA Brasil 2015 exhibition. Following the success of the launch event in 2013, many exhibitors committed to their participation for the 2015 event, which spurred the exhibition to grow. With over one year until FESPA Brasil, the exhibition has increased again by 16% due to growing demand. The growth is a result of more Brazilian manufacturers and suppliers recognising FESPA Brasil as the ideal place and opportunity to expand their presence in the visual communications, signage, screen printing, wide format digital and textile printing markets. Exhibitors value the high quality of the event and the visitors, this combined with the positive responses that have followed the 2013 edition, has resulted in previous exhibitors taking larger stands and more new companies reserving space. With the increased floor plan, FESPA Brasil 2015 will take place during the same dates, 18-21 March 2015, as well as the same location at the Expo Center Norte. However, to accommodate the expansion, the exhibition has moved from the Blue Hall into the White Hall. This second phase of growth demonstrates the market's confidence in the FESPA Brasil brand and its dedication to the community. Alexandre Keese, Director of APS Feiras & Eventos comments: "In addition to the great feedback from exhibitors during the show in 2013, with many of them confirming their participation for the next event, we

have also had a lot of new companies approaching us to be part of the great line-up of industry brands all looking to gain the same success the exhibitors had last year." Raphael Komori, Marketing Manager of DIGI+ / Nutec Digital Ink Brasil, one of FESPA Brasil 2015 exhibitors, this is a very positive change: "Every change, when planned with care following all the rules and agreements previously signed, bring us benefits. FESPA planned the enlargement very well, and it will provide more comfort and more business opportunities with more visitors". For Komori, "FESPA Brasil brought its concept of internationals trade shows, offering more exhibitors, information and corelated segments of visual communication". The event will be host to all the major industry players, as well as providing its unique proposition of high quality educational content. The International Congress will return to cover important market specific themes, and the World Wrap Masters competition will be an emotive feature again. FESPA Group Exhibition Manager, Michael Ryan, comments "We are delighted with the support we have received to date in Brazil, and this further expansion ensures we can deliver a larger, more comprehensive event in 2015. Our aim is always to inspire the print community and ensure they have access to the latest innovations and industry trends. With more exhibitors and focused educational features, we are confident the show will achieve that, and attendees will be able to explore future print capabilities." Transforming print into value

T

he print, media and publishing landscape looks very different today than it did ten or even five years ago. Yet, despite print volumes declining in some segments , in others print continues to grow despite the evolution of so much traditionally printed media into digital forms. The print industry around the world continues to demonstrate how innovation, creative thinking and sometimes even integration will ensure that print has a bright future. In December 2013, international analyst Smithers Pira forecast an annual growth of 2 per cent for the print industry through until 2018. This growth is expected to be driven by growth in transitional economies, as well as added-value opportunities. The key lies in turning print into something more than just ink on a piece of paper and instead developing applications where the printed ‘product’ itself is truly valuable. Some of the high-profile examples of this include the evolution of fields such as printed electronics, 3D printing and of course, cross media. Yet it’s not only these areas of technological innovation that are creating valuable print applications; sometimes it can be a creative use of well-established technologies that turns print from something disposable into a must-keep item. One high-profile example of creativity giving rise to a valuable printed ‘product’ is the bottle labels in Coca-Cola’s 2013 ‘Share a Coke’ campaign. In the campaign, which originated in Australia before expanding to become the company’s largest ever global promotion, the soft drinks giant replaced its label with 250 of the most common first names from around the world in multiple different languages. This enabled

customers to ‘share a coke’ with friends and family and has evolved into multiple campaign activations such as a summer tour in a number of different countries and a Christmas social media campaign. The campaign has achieved enormous success for the brand, which has seen both sales and social media engagement with the brand increase. For the most part, bottle labels were printed in two stages: first using conventional label printing for between 75 to 90 per cent of the design, and then digital print to enable the printing of variable names. In some activations, a specially developed can-printing technique enabled simultaneous printing of eight or twelve different names. Gregory Bentley, European packaging innovator, Coca-Cola Services SA, says: “Different activations around the world saw variation being done in different ways. For example, production in Germany is of refillable PET bottles with wash-off paper labels, so we didn’t actually need to use digital printing for the labels that were on shelf because labels could be mixed to gain the variation in names. We enabled true ‘personalisation’ there by making it possible for customers to go online and order a bottle with a particular name on; these orders were fulfilled using digital print.” “The thing about the campaign is that, from a technical perspective, the labels aren’t actually ‘personalised’ per se,” he continues. “Our role was using digital print as an enabler for variable print and printing a selection of names so that consumers could do the personalisation themselves by finding a name on shelf and giving that bottle to someone or even

buying it for themselves.” Bentley’s comments highlight the importance of creative thinking in developing truly valuable print applications that harness the capabilities of print technology to deliver a ‘product’ that makes the most of print’s benefits. Exploiting the unique benefits of print – such as the physical and tangible – is another way in which print service providers are able to differentiate themselves by using print to do things that are not possible with electronic communications. The social stationery arena – such as wedding invitations, change of address cards and thank you notes – provides a range of good examples where print is the value. Wedding invitations, which are designed as much to be keepsakes as they are for their actual function, offer a wealth of creative examples. From digitally printed passportthemed invitations for destination weddings through to bespoke laser-cut stationery suites, many wedding stationery printers’ websites read like a veritable glossary of different print technologies. Print’s tangible, hold-it-in-your-hands quality is also being used to produce valuable products in the form of brochures for luxury brands, art galleries, auction houses and property developers, and the photo merchandise market is cashing in on print’s physical qualities too. High margin printed products such as photobooks and personalised greetings cards are growing in popularity among casual and hobbyist photographers. 2013 research conducted in the USA by international industry analyst InfoTrends found that 32 per cent of snapshot photographers, 45 per

cent of family memory-keeper photographers, 57 per cent of hobbyist photographers and 71 per cent of advanced hobbyist photographers had ordered some kind of photo merchandise in the preceding year. With more than 20 per cent of European camera owners (including smartphone users) indicating an intention to order a photobook (or photobooks) in the future, photo merchandise is clearly a big growth opportunity internationally. Moving on from the creative and the tangible, another technique being used increasingly to create valuable printed pieces is the physical integration of print with digital technologies using cross media. One example of this can be seen in technologies such as Americhip™ and TV in a Card, which are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in print with applications – from the first Video in Print® advertisement in US Entertainment Weekly in 2009 through to greetings cards featuring video in 2011 and the Microsoft Office 365 magazine advertisement that turned an issue of Forbes into a Wi-Fi hotspot in 2013. Russell Lawley-Gibbs, Inventor and CEO of TV in a Card says: “What our customers find so appealing is the power to combine the most powerful communications medium – video – with the precision targeting that is possible in printed direct marketing. It means that they can target hard-to-reach customers with specific messages and make sure that their videos are viewed by the people that they want to see them. Additionally, because the combination of video and print has such impact, we’ve found that their messages often ‘go viral’ as recipients share the piece with friends, family, peers and colleagues.” Cross media technologies such as QR codes are also being

used in product packaging and retail displays with increasing frequency. Certainly research published in 2012 by internet behaviour analyst ComScore found that of the 14.2 million smartphone users in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK who scanned a QR code in a threemonth period, 38 per cent scanned a QR code printed on product packaging.

Inspiration Avenue – a gallery celebrating powerful print opportunities and impact statements and information demonstrating the crucial role of print, and its versatility across a number of major themes from around the world – will give visitors access to develop their understanding of how the integration of print and digital media

boosts marketing campaign results. Co-located with Ipex, Cross Media Production will enable print providers, publishers, agencies and brand owners with an opportunity to ‘get under the hood’ of building, managing and delivering cross media campaigns. Taking place from 24th to 29th

March 2014 at the ExCeL London, Ipex 2014 and Cross Media Production will boast 130 content sessions and a wealth of opportunities to learn about ways print can create value. More information about the event and registration details are available at http://www.ipex.org and http://www.cmpshow.com.

The growing popularity of interactive packaging is largely being driven by growth in online shopping, because as consumers become more accustomed to looking for additional production information, discount vouchers and discounts, they are increasingly looking to packaging for more information. QR codes aren’t the only technologies being used to bring packaging to life – augmented reality (AR) and near field communication (NFC) are growing in prominence in both packaging and in-store displays as marketers seek to create an immersive retail experience. Creative thinking paired with technological innovation is transforming the print industry. This is why the organisers of Ipex 2014 are focused on providing visitors with opportunities to learn more about how they can use new trends to grow their businesses. From Future Innovations and the Inspiration Avenue, through to the co-located Cross Media Production and World Print Summit, as well as a series of Masterclasses, Ipex will be abuzz with new ideas. Future Innovations at Ipex will provide print service providers with a unique opportunity to find out in one place what is happening in the industry now and what areas have high growth potential for the next few years. Focused on areas such as 3D printing, printed electronics, digital print on packaging and photo applications, Future Innovations is aimed at providing insight into how applications are created and the solutions used in the production process, as well as providing inspiration. printingreview | march-april 2014 | 37

manroland web systems Wins Upgrade Order at Two Gannett Sites

T

he Indianapolis Star, with five GEOMAN presses, and The Daily Advertiser equipped with two UNISET presses orders retrofits to modernize their pressroom equipment.

Gannett Publishing Services has chosen the expertise from manroland web systems Inc. to upgrade and retrofit the press control systems on their manroland web systems presses at The Indianapolis Star in Indianapolis, Indiana, and at The Daily Advertiser in Lafayette, Louisiana. The upgrade project has already begun at both plants, with planning to ensure daily production will not be interrupted in any way. The upgrade includes a modernization of the obsolete PECOM Controls, parts of the drive controls and I/O hardware which will guarantee not only increased uptime due to better parts availability, but also increased productivity and efficiency at both sites. The complete upgrade also leads to improved online diagnostics possibilities via the automatic diagnostic server system. The project includes a comprehensive replacement of old InterbusLOOP components with new I/O based Interbus modules, as well as the retrofit of the controller hardware and configurations, wiring diagrams, and controller-specific documentation. Along with the hardware and software retrofits and reconfigurations, manroland web systems will also provide extensive training to the customer on the maintenance of the new systems for both plants.manroland web systems is utilizing an incremental approach to these upgrades, unique to the controls upgrade industry for Newspapers. Rather than replacing the entire systems, manroland web systems’ engineering and technical teams carefully assess the technology at each plant, rate the urgency of each component upgrade, and utilize the existing framework of the existing presses to provide maximum cost efficiency. This gives the customer the option to do these upgrades over time, and reduces the need for excessive capital expenditures. “We are pleased to work with manroland on these updates to The Indianapolis Star and The Daily Advertiser press equipment. This process will ensure we have the most up to date technology allowing us to be more cost-effective and efficient,” stated Bill Bolger, Gannett Global Publishing Services Vice President, Central Region.

Smart Labels – Smart Packaging

W

ith Primera’s digital label printing equipment product labels really

stand out

Smart product labeling and packaging is extremely important and plays a significant role in the consumer’s purchasing decision. Manufacturers of almost any type of product often find themselves in need of short- to medium-run, fullcolor customized product labels. The reasons are many: for use on prototype products, promotional campaigns, and perhaps most often, because the manufacturer has many different products that are all produced in smaller quantities. In all of these cases, the printed quality and appearance of these labels are extremely important. Providing a professional appearance on packages can easily make the difference between a product selling well or simply sitting on the retail shelf. Putting the most professional color labels possible on products will set them apart from others. This is especially important for smaller manufacturers who can actually increase their sales by making their products stand out through innovative packaging and labeling. It also allows manufacturers of all sizes to offer private label goods in smaller quantities.

short- to medium-run jobs in various sizes. It’s the first laser printer to print on pre-die cut label stock. With 2400 dpi print resolution and print speed of 5 meters per minute, CX1000e delivers professional fullcolor print quality along with highspeed production. CX1000e output has much deeper and far more vibrant colors. Dot patterns are virtually imperceptible. And for the most precise color control, Pantone-approved spot color support is included. CX1000e prints onto many different laser-qualified label materials including pressure-sensitive plain papers, white and clear polyesters and more. A wide range of approved matte, semi-gloss, highgloss and specialty food and beverage label materials are available as well as eco-friendly substrates. Printed labels are waterproof, highly scratch, smudge and tear-resistant. Ink is also highly UV-resistant so printed labels can be used indoors or outside. New to Primera’s

extensive range of label materials is the Vintage Textured Paper Material, which comes with a plain paper surface, a water-soluble adhesive and an unbleached liner. Even though this biodegradable label material is not waterproof because of its composition the printing results are outstanding. “Manufacturers and distributors from all kinds of industries but especially from the food and drink industry often want to produce higher quantities of their own high-quality labels in-house. Our new CX1000e is the best-in-class solution for that kind of application,” explained Andreas Hoffmann, managing director of Primera’s EMEA office Primera Europe. “Producing your own labels on CX1000e not only saves time and is far more convenient, but it almost always saves you money, too.” Ordering massive quantities of pre-printed labels is no longer needed, there’s no lead time and no set-up charges, either. Design changes can be accom-

plished immediately so there’s no wasted inventory. If finished rolls are needed, the FX1000e Matrix Removal System is the perfect accessory to the CX1000e Color Label Printer. In a single automated process the FX1000e removes the waste label matrix while slitting and rewinding the printed labels to finished rolls. Finished label rolls are tightly wound and ready to be applied either manually or by most label dispensers or automated label applicators. The FX1000e is available either with a single or double rewinder mandril. At IPEX show, held at ExCel, London, UK, March 24-29, 2014, Primera will be presenting its digital label printing solutions to the international audience at the company booths # N3-D290 and N4-D310. Primera employees will happily inform visitors about Primera’s inkjet- and dry toner-based label printing equipment, the wide rang of label materials and their different usability.

Primera Technology, Inc., a leading manufacturer of specialty color printers widely known for its inkjetbased label printers, has successfully developed short to mediumrun solutions using color laser technology, such as the CX1000e Color Label Printer, a roll-to-toll dry toner-based laser printer. CENTRO STAMPA QUOTIDIANI AND Q.I. PRESS CONTROLS SIGN FOR ITALIANS FIRST: CLOSED LOOP COLOUR ON NEWSPAPER PRESS the latest added IDS features, dampening control, drew my attention. The dampening-supply in the printing units may fluctuate at times and is now fully automatically identified and adjusted by IDS, and all at the same speed at which colours are adjusted. So, less worries about the control of the two-component offset process, ink and fountain solution control as they are now both automatically restrained by IDS.”

C

entro Stampa Quotidiani (CSQ) and Q.I. Press Controls both will have their premiere in the Italian market. For the first time a newspaper press will be equipped with closed loop colour control: IDS on CSQ’ WIFAG OF373/6 newspaper press. The investment will be for 8 IDS scanners for closed loop colour including dampening control. Centro Stampa Quotidiani (CSQ) is a modern newspaper printing company which started in 2000. It was built as a separate printing company by 2 editors who merged their printing force. Their architectural attractive site in Erbusco houses ‘state of the art’ technology, with 2 WIFAG presslines: a WIFAG OF370/ 42 | march-april 2014 | printingreview

GTD consisting of 10 printing towers and 2 folders and a WIFAG OF 373/6 with 8 printing towers and two folders installed in two phases in 2008 and 2010. CSQ prints about 15 titles daily, amongst which national and local newspaper and foreign titles for local distribution. The total annual circulation is 125 million copies. “We always follow new developments in the market very closely. As we already were familiar with Q.I. Press Controls because of the installation of their first generation colour register system (IRS) on our WIFAG OF370GTD press in 2005, we followed the developments on their IDS closed loop colour control as well,” states Dario de Cian, General Manager CSQ. CSQ will be the first

newspaper printer in Italy to work with closed loop colour control, enabling the press to reproduce colours extremely accurately and consistently throughout the run. This will generate savings in labour and waste. “Given the good experiences with Q.I. Press Controls being our supplier during the past years, their continuous drive to deliver innovative, reliable solutions that comply to customer needs and their good customer service made us decide to invest in their IDS closed loop colour.” Dario de Cian proceeds: “I was impressed by customer visits and by the results achieved in several business cases. Especially one of

Jaco Bleijenberg, International Director of Sales & Marketing of Q.I. Press Controls: “We are very enthusiastic about this order. Not only because again it proves the growing importance of closed loop colour control in the newspaper printing industry. This installation will also represent an important reference site for our Southern European market.” Carlo Caporizzi, CEO of GMDE and Q.I. Press Controls’ agent for Italy: “This result confirms the good quality of Q.I. Press Controls’ solutions and of its organization given that CSQ is a satisfied QIPC customer since its start many years ago. We are proud to be partner of Q.I.P Press Controls and a recognised solution provider of CSQ with which we have a very long story of positive relationship and mutual respect. CSQ with this new project, demonstrated once again its attitude to invest in innovation to keep their facilities always ahead on the market”.

PUNJAB KESARI GROUP SUPORTED BY Q.I. PRESS CONTROLS IN EXPANDING MARKET

P

unjab Kesari Group in Jalandhar, India, one of the biggest printing groups in Northern India, is expanding its market. Q.I. Press Controls is supporting their strategy by installing 129 mRC+ register control camera’s for both colour register and cut-off register on different press lines. Punjab Kesari Group is pursuing growth. Not only by adding additional editions in markets such as Delhi, Simla, Bathinda and Rohtak, but they also want to further improve the quality level of their products. They are investing in completely new printing plants and are simultaneously upgrading existing presses with more automation like motorization, automatic colour and cut-off register controls, spray bar dampening. “We are working from an ideologically and technologically sophisticated vision. Our business strategy keeps us in a profitable position and amongst the leaders in the newspaper industry,” indicates Mr. Amit Chopra, Vice Chairman & Jt. Managing Director of Punjab Kesari Group. Punjab Kesari Group has put its trust into Q.I. Press Controls for automating the colour- and cut-off register control. Each of the seven 4-high printing units of the Manugraph Cityline Express will be equipped with 2 mRC+ camera’s for colour register control and 1 mRC+ camera’s for cut-off control with marks. The same goes for the six 4high printing unit counting Ronald Web Offset press: 129 register camera’s in total. The mRC+ is a digital camera with an integrated microprocessor ensuring that the measured data is processed in real-

time. It has 3 functions in 1 scanner: colour register, cut-off register and sidelay register. As the camera can read from an unsupported web, the system can be mounted directly after the last print couple ensuring a very tight control loop. Because the different colours are automatically brought into register while starting up substantial savings can be realized with regard to labour and waste whilst enhancing the print quality to a constant, high level. “Because of good references from users of Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC+ systems our team was convinced that the partnership with Q.I. Press Controls would be the better option for our upgrade investment. The fully automated operation of Q.I. Press Controls’ systems, the user-friendly and logical operating interfaces will considerably increase the effectiveness of Punjab Kesari Group’s production platform.” Mr. Amit Chopra concludes: “We also feel that Q.I. Press Controls’ personal way of approaching customers whether it is in sales or service will be beneficial to us.” “For us this order is important as with this order Q.I. Press Controls can add her first big Newspaper group in local language of the Northern part of India to her client base. It will help us to enter in other similar vernacular newspaper groups in that part of the country,” says Managing Director Vijay Pandya of Q.I. Press Controls India. About the Punjab Kesari Group: The Punjab Kesari Group started their operation in 1948 with the publication of the Urdu daily Hind Samachar. Later the Hindi daily Punjab Kesari and Punjabi Daily Jag

Bani were added to their portfolio respectively in 1965 and 1978. In August this year, they started the publication of NAVODAYA TIMES, a Hindi daily from New Delhi. The four well established dailies have a combined circulation of around 1.15 million copies on week days and 1.2 million copies on Sundays. About Q.I. Press Controls: Q.I. Press Controls develops and delivers innovative, high quality optical measure and control systems. We are globally active in the newspaper and magazine printing industry. Our total solutions are supported by a worldwide service network. These reliable systems are

Mr. Amit Chopra, Vice Chairman & Jt. Managing Director of Punjab Kesari Group. proven in the market of existing and new printing presses and offer our customers structural better results.

KBA and Optimus exchanged contracts to seal their new sales and distribution partnership on 12th February. Here: Nicola Bisset, group managing director for Optimus, and Ralf Sammeck, KBA vice president for the sheetfed product house

KBA now distributor for Optimus MIS Partnership for efficient print company organisation

K

BA and the Optimus Group have announced a partnership relating to worldwide sales and distribution of management information systems (MIS) from Optimus. With effect from 1st March, press manufacturer KBA is to become a distributor for Optimus solutions such as Dash, Cloud and Cloud Mobile in the regions Western Europe, Asia-Pacific and USA/ Canada. Further markets are

expected to follow later. Many sheetfed offset users around the world are interested in the capabilities of an integrated MIS, which can not only manage all its different substrates and processes, but also grows together with the company and its needs. Various KBA customers are already using Optimus systems, and they have gained a good reputation for their outstanding flexibility and userfriendly implementation. “We have already worked with other partners in this field in the past, and

our customers can continue to rely on our openness and flexibility if they wish to integrate existing or new KBA Rapidas into their preferred MIS solutions.

cooperation with such a renowned and future-oriented company. KBA possesses a broad, global customer base – also in countries in which we are not present to date.

But when we recently decided to offer MIS solutions as part of a closed-loop workflow with our presses, Optimus was our first choice,” says Ralf Sammeck, KBA vice president for the sheetfed product house.

Our partnership is a fantastic opportunity to reach further potential customers for our MIS solutions. KBA is similar to Optimus in the way it places the customer's needs in the foreground, and is well known for its excellent service. The cooperation with KBA will enable both sides to further strengthen their brand image and reputation.”

Nicola Bisset, group managing director for Optimus, adds: “We are really looking forward to the

hina has been the largest single market for printing presses from the Koenig & Bauer group for a number of years. It is already more than 20 years ago that KBA established its first local presence on this enormous market, where the current sales and service network comprises KBA Printing Machinery (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., further branch offices in Beijing and Guangzhou, and KBA (HK) Co. Ltd. in Hong Kong. More than 170 staff at KBA China provide professional and all-embracing customer services for Chinese users of sheetfed offset, web and special presses. Speciality sheet feeders: KBA Machinery (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. It is possibly less well known that there are also KBA companies manufacturing and assembling press equipment in China. In 2010, for example, Koenig & Bauer AG 2010 acquired an 80% majority interest in MABEG Machinery (Shanghai) Co. Ltd (MMS). The company's 63 48 | march-april 2014 | printingreview

employees produce mainly sheet feeders for Chinese die-cutter, laminator and sheetfed printing press manufacturers, but at the same time also a variety of parts and components for the European supplier industry. With effect from 01.04.2014, MMS will be operating under the new name KBA Machinery (Shanghai) Co. Ltd (then KMS for short). As chairman of the Chinese subsidiary, Herbert Nadj has already been reporting to KBA executive vicepresident for production Michael Kummert since July 2013. With his background in power electronics, Nadj travelled the world between 1986 and 1998 as a service technician and project manager for screen printing machines. From 1998 to 2008, he then contributed decisively to development of the Chinese subsidiary MMS as plant, installation and service manager for Mabeg Maschinenbau GmbH & Co KG, before moving on to Rudolf Fritz

GmbH & Co. KG, where he served as technical manager until January 2013. Nadj joined KBA in February 2013 and was appointed chairman of MMS / KBA Machinery (Shanghai) in the following summer. He now plans to expand business relationships to local suppliers in the upper market segment and in this way to win new customers. Given the ever higher quality of production, he also sees a good chance to expand deliveries of components to Europe. Speciality marking and coding: KBAMetronic Hangzhou Co., Ltd. The Binjiang district of Hangzhou is an upwardly striving high-tech location. A modern high-speed train connects the area with Shanghai, approx. 200 km to the northeast. It was in Hangzhou that KBA-Metronic GmbH and partners founded KBAMetronic Hangzhou Co., Ltd. as a further sales and manufacturing company in summer 2013. The KBA specialist for industrial marking and

coding systems, which has its main offices in VeitshĂśchheim near WĂźrzburg, expects this investment to give a further push to international growth. Alongside KBA-Metronic, as majority shareholder, the remaining shares are held by In-Dun (HQ) Holding Inc. and In-Dun Co. Ltd. KBA-Metronic and In-Dun can already look back over a long partnership. In-Dun has represented KBAMetronic in Taiwan since 2005, and in China since 2006. An assembly line for alphaJET inkjet printers is currently being set up at the Chinese factory. Know-how and certain key components, however, are to remain the responsibility of the German headquarters. A total of 23 employees will initially be handling manufacturing, sales and service for China and Taiwan. Additional sales offices are to be opened in Zhejiang and Guangdong. Expansion to supply the rest of the Southeast Pacific region is planned for the future.
