THE INDIAN PRINTING INDUSTRY WILL REACH NEARLY $20.9 BILLION BY 2015

I

ndia is poised to be number one in the world for printing by 2015. The country's printing market, currently valued at $12.1 billion, is projected to reach $20.9 billion by 2015." The printing industry in India is slowly progressing from the heavy machinery using industry to a more software-centric business. The Indian printers are today equipped with the latest computer controlled printing machines and flow lines for binding, while state-of-the-art digital technologies are used in pre-press. UV digital printing and inkjet technology are also on the rise in India. The advent of global brands, rising consumerism and growth of the pharmaceutical industry have seen an increase in the scope for package printing. Giving an optimistic outlook of the industry, the package printing sector is growing at the annual rate of 17 percent, commercial printing at a rate of 10-12 percent and digital printing at robust 30 percent. The digital printing industry is seeing significant transformations with new technologies & applications providing cost-effective and customized solutions. For the foreseeable future, offset and digital will not only co-exist, but will also complement each other- with offset taking the medium-to-longer jobs and digital performing on short-to-medium run lengths.

The booming Indian economy, increasing consumerism, entry of global brands in the country and opening of the sector to foreign investors are bound to offer growth opportunities to the industry. In India, the 3D printer market is nascent, according to 3D printer makers who also provide 3D printing services and DIY kits that can be merged with imported products and labelled “Made in India”. The printers, they say, are mostly used by smaller companies to “verify industrial designs and not for mass production”. According to Viral Sachde, founder of Bangalore-based Cycloid System, who supplies 3D printers to companies and educational institutions, “our clients typically are those who want to do industrial prototyping and make 5-10 units for use in the field”. He added that 3D printers in India are mostly the “thermoplastic” variety (as opposed to 3D metal printers) and are used for “customization of products in smaller volumes”. Globally, researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder have gone a step ahead and added a fourth dimension, or 4D, to their printing technology which, they said in a press statement, opens up “exciting possibilities for the creation and use of adaptive, composite materials in manufacturing, packaging and biomedical applications”. The 4D printing concept, which allows materials to “self-assemble” into 3D structures, was initially proposed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology faculty member Skylar Tibbits this April, when Tibbits and his team combined a strand of plastic with a layer made out of “smart” material that could selfassemble in water. printingreview | september-october 2014 | 3

drupa 2016 is cooperation partner of the 5th Media Mundo congress on 17 and 18 November in Düsseldorf rethink sustainability: economic motivation for sustainable media production/ Keynote speaker Dr. Daniel Dahm, Club of Rome / NGO partner of the WWF, FSC and Antalis, IGEPA and SCA support the congress

D

rupa will renew its long-term cooperation with the Media Mundo industrial action group. As in 2011 and 2012, drupa will act as cooperation partner of the 5th Media Mundo congress on the 17 November (Discussion on the evening before the event) and on 18 November, 2014 (all day) in Düsseldorf. This year, the congress will focus on the motto „rethink sustainability – economic motivation for sustainable media production“. In contrast to the mottos of previous years, which concentrated on ecological behaviour, one aspect of sustainable media production, the 5th Media Mundo congress will look into an equally important sustainability aspect: economy. Particularly affected by the current economic situation and faced with the challenge of having to consolidate its market position, the printing and media industry is looking for practical measures and the required initiative. The congress is supported by the WWF and the FSC as NGO partners, Antalis (Europe’s leading wholesale group for communication media), IGEPA (one of the leading in paper wholesalers Europe Europa) and the Swedish SCA group.   Werner M. Dornscheidt, President and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf, underlines drupa’s commitment to this subject: “The issue of green printing and sustainability across the entire process chain will be one of

the focal points of drupa 2016. The aspect of sustainability has become a major concern of brand owners all over the world, and they expect their printed communication to adhere to “green” standards. This is a challenge for the industry and printing service providers, and they are well advised not to veer from the path that they have already chosen“. Meanwhile, green printing has also become an important selling point. In the first “drupa Global Trends Report“ (February 2014), 48% of all printing service providers reported that they used certified paper to accommodate customer requirements. Another 37% operate a sustainable waste management system, and 33% are committed to a certified environmental management system. “Economic production is an important motivation for achieving a sustainable media production, and as such it generates important effects of ecological sustainability“, says Rüdiger Maaß, Managing Director of the association of the media production industry. “Economy is the cornerstone of competitiveness – an issue that has become more important than ever before.“ The 5th Media Mundo congress will deal with topics such as “The effects of process optimisation“, “Energy efficiency“ and “Standardisation“. It will also provide an overview over different ways of thinking and provide some ideas on how to master this change and some answers the question of where this change might lead. International experts from science, environmental associations, politics and the industry will engage in a critical discussion about the current situation and about likely scenarios for the near future. Pioneers of sustainable media production will illustrate practical

solutions as well as problems and unexpected challenges that they encountered.  Keynote speaker Dr. Daniel Dahm, Club of Rome Dr. Daniel Dahm, member of the Club of Rome, has kindly agreed to present a paper on the “The conflicting areas of global overshoot“. 45-year-old Dahm is founding member of the Utopia foundation and the “Oekosoziales Forum Deutschland” (German eco-social forum) and is also member of different non-profit organisations. He has become internationally acclaimed because of his contribution to the Potsdam Manifesto of 2005. This paper explores the root causes of the current crisis and suggests a radical and far-reaching re-orientation for the future of human development. Renowned scientists and personalities from all over the world have already signed this manifesto. The congress also presents the following speakers: • Dr. Meike Gebhardt (Utopia AG) – How much sustainability do consumers want? • Uwe Lübbermann (Premium Cola) – Marketing with potential for the future

• Peter Jeschke (GC Graphic Consult GmbH) – Sustainability in printing • Alexander Rossner (zukunftswerk eG) – Communicating sustainability (Strategic tasks, practical advice and the argument of “benefit“) • Michael Müller (IPM) – Wasting resources leads to economic ruin (Top ten of the most striking action areas for printing service providers and purchasers of printed products) Tickets for f:mp members and visitors of former Media Mundo congresses cost EUR 195. Ticket price for nonmembers of f:mp: 295,00 Euro, members of FSC, Forum Corporate Publishing and the “Initiative Pro Recyclingpapier” will be charged EUR 245. Ticket price for the discussion on the evening before the event: EUR 50. Visitors who book their tickets before 31 August, 2014, will receive a EUR 50 bonus. Q.I. Press Controls and EAE join forces with all-purpose camera IDS-3D

been embodied in the new IDS-3D camera system! The IDS-3D looks like and is positioned on rotary presses in the same way as the mRC-3D. However, the difference is under the “bonnet” and it can be identified by its blue exterior.

Rotary print to reap the benefits!

EAE’s takeover by the owners of Q.I. Press Controls’ has enabled developers in both companies to combine the best of both worlds and produce one full-colour print quality control and regulation system. Algorithms for the LOOP and IDS, for example, were implemented in a single new system: IDS-3D. All functions are now

The precursor had already been presented by Q.I. Press Controls at DRUPA 2012: the orange-coloured, dual-sensor mRC-3D camera system. At the time, the system was cryptically described as ‘offering a diversity of potential benefits’. These have now

executed with combined intelligence on full-colour print lines, without the need for any printed bars, strips or markings! IDS-3D also incorporates the same tried-and-tested automatic cleaning system as the mRC-3D. A cassette with a film in front of the lens ensures proper functioning of the system at all times. The camera is able to see whether the film has been smudged and cleans this whenever required. The launch of IDS-3D means that the market now has its own unique ‘all-inone’ system. The very same dualsensor IDS-3D camera has built-in process algorithms to ensure simultaneous closed-loop corrections, such as: Optimisation of the CMYK colour register, front-to-back register, unit2unit register and likewise the cocking register for heatset rotation presses.

The first orders for this high-efficiency, closed-loop, all-in-one quality control system have already been placed. The IDS-3D camera signals the end for previous systems, which used different types of cameras for different functions on rotary presses. As from now there is a single solution for everything: IDS-3D. It’s also an extremely beneficial solution for retrofit upgrades for tasks sometimes carried out manually on rotary presses, such as colour corrections and fountain solution control.

By providing a global platform for technological exchange, it contributes to the sector’s burgeoning development amid transformation. Exhibitor recruitment has been finished much earlier than the schedule with all booths sold out. The Organizing Committee of the 5th All in Print China kicked off exhibitor recruitment in April 2013, which was widely received by exhibitors and new comers in the industry. The recruitment lasted for only 7 months. The applying booth area increased dramatically. Applications by exhibitors through the exhibition website were far more

12 | september-october 2014 | printingreview

than expectation. Originally, the organizing committee was planning to finish the recruitment on 31st July, 2014. The recruitment was finished on 28th February, 2014. The organizers tried to expand pavilions or build outdoor areas. However, due to the constraint of current conditions of the exhibition area, both efforts were futile. By the end of the exhibitor recruitment, exhibitors of over 10,000 m2 are still on the waiting list, who still would like to exhibit on All in Print China 2014. By the end of 31st July, over 500 exhibitors had signed booth agreements. All leading exhibitors from all the sectors of the printing industry have applied for exhibiting All in Print China 2014. There is a clear sign that top exhibitors will attend All in Print China 2014. Representatives in digital and pre-press sectors will bring their new products. They are Canon, HP, Founder, Konica Minolta, Epson, Fujifilm, Fuji Xerox, Ricoh, Kodak, EFI and Screen. Canon, in particular, will make its debut in the Chinese market after its integration with Oce. Goss packaging innovation recognized with 2014 InterTech Technology Award Award denotes proven industrial application of technology Judges cite new opportunities for printers as key benefit Goss International has again been named among the recipients of a prestigious InterTech Technology Award in 2014. While extending a significant track record of technology achievements, this latest distinction marks the company's first major award for innovation in the packaging sector. "This award is particularly gratifying as it establishes Goss as a true innovator in providing a new print platform for the various packaging print sectors as well as in our more traditional sectors. It also formally acknowledges successful application in the field with user evidence that supports the value proposition," comments Peter Walczak, Goss International director of product management for packaging presses. In order to be considered for a Printing Industries of America InterTechTM Technology Award, a technology must be: commercially available in the marketplace, beyond beta testing and proven in industrial/ commercial applications. The Goss Sunday Vpak series of presses was commended by judges for bringing "full litho benefits to packaging". The panel commented that Vpak technology presents converters with "a new alternative to exploit the print quality, productivity and lower image cost of the web offset process, especially for shorter-run or segmented folding carton, flexible packaging and label jobs".` Key differentiators of Vpak presses acknowledged through the Award include: Wide web and variable repeat - The application of Goss patented gapless blankets to the Vpak platform, along with the development of quick-change plate and blanket sleeves and a new purpose-designed ink train, has created the widest (up to 75 inches/1905mm) and most productive web offset packaging press option currently available with an infinitely variable repeat range. "White Light" Blanket Layer - Goss-designed blanket sleeves include a "white light" layer below the exterior layer that allow blanket sleeves with varying external circumference (repeat) sizes to be used with a single, common blanket adapter sleeve. This means that the repeat size can have a range of approximately 1.5 inches (38.1mm) which can be achieved with a single set of blanket adapter sleeves, reducing the cost of size changes significantly and providing a dramatic ROI advantage for the end user if they choose to use this approach. Advanced Goss closed-loop tension control - Utilizing proprietary web transport research and predictive modeling developed over decades of leadership, Goss has integrated advanced tension control within the Vpak presses. Servo-driven motors, minimal web couple inertia and closed-loop monitoring and control combine to ensure stable web dynamics and high print quality for a full range of film and paper/board packaging substrates, from 36 gauge film to 30 point board. The announcement of the award follows closely on the launch of the Goss Packaging Technology Center at its headquarters in Durham, New Hampshire (USA). The Vpak 500 press system in operation at the Center has seven web offset units as well as EB and UV curing and flexo coating capabilities offering press demonstration, testing and training sessions for customers and prospects in the Americas, Europe and Asia. It is also designed as a controlled site for suppliers interested in testing inks, chemicals and auxiliary technologies for web offset production. 16 | september-october 2014 | printingreview

QuadTech's portfolio enables printers and converters to improve press performance - whether offset, flexo or gravure - achieve print consistency, and reduce production costs through advanced automation and effective waste control. "Many printers and converters remain cautious about making major investments," said Karl Fritchen, President of QuadTech. "At the same time, they need to improve competitiveness and profitability. At QuadTech, this is a challenge we understand across commercial, packaging and newspaper sectors. We look forward to presenting our latest products during Graph Expo/CPP Expo, and helping printers and converters improve their performance and bottom lines." QuadTech solutions featured QuadTech Color Control and Web Inspection System with AccuCam™ is designed to meet the needs of commercial and newspaper printers. It is an image-based color control system that provides fully automatic closed-loop color control by adjusting the ink-key settings for consistent color, eliminating the need for gray or color bars. For newspaper printers, the system also has a water control capability that monitors and controls press damping levels, reducing paper waste and ink usage. The inspection capability warns press operators of many common printing faults such as scumming, creasing, transposed plates and tramlines. The QuadTech Digital Ink System provides commercial web and newspaper printers a significant quality and cost-saving improvement by providing more accurate density control at all press speeds. The system delivers ink savings along with enhanced image quality with precise accuracy. The system is a computer-controlled ink injection system that replaces traditional open fountain ink trains, and can be used to upgrade existing "pump and rail" systems. For packaging presses, QuadTech presents the world's first in-line color measurement and ink control system, the QuadTech Color Quality Solution, utilizing the Color Measurement System with SpectralCam™. It enables automatic sharing and processing of color data between in-line color measurement and off-line color measurement industry leaders. Maintaining color quality throughout a print run provides new levels of color accuracy and assurance to converters and brand managers that color specifications have been met. Another powerful solution for converters is the QuadTech Inspection System with SpectralCam™. It is the only system that provides 100% defect inspection and true spectral color measurement, enabling accurate, high-quality color packaging. The QuadTech Web Viewing System can be used as a stand-alone system, or in conjunction with the Inspection System, for real-time digital viewing of the moving web and optimum error detection. QuadTech's ICON™ Platform, a single, user-friendly centralized station for all QuadTech press controls, provides instant data for makeready savings in terms of equipment setup time, labor and materials. Also, QuadTech's Waste Management System and Data Central for Inspection can use this live and stored information to optimize efficiency by pinpointing defect areas for removal and controlling quality - keeping waste out of customers' hands and cutting costs. QuadTech PDF Verification is a software add-on for packaging converters that compares approved artwork against an actual printed sample to verify correct press setup, ensuring accuracy and quality, enabling operators to catch errors before they print. The QuadTech Register Guidance System with MultiCam® is a closed-loop color-to-color register control system that enables printers to achieve good copy quickly, reducing waste. Also, optional fan-out control for newspaper printing automatically keeps the system in lateral register across the width of the web. QuadTech Ribbon Control System with MultiCam® is a print-to-cut and print-to-fold registration system that minimizes waste during make-ready and when cutting any imperfect substrate areas. It is easily integrated with other equipment like UV coaters, folders and rotary cutters. For further benefits, all QuadTech systems can be covered with QuadTech Service Advantage™. There are four levels of coverage to choose from, including a comprehensive program of support from telephone and remote diagnostics, to site visits that ensure peak performance. As part of its global commitment, QuadTech is continuing to develop its worldwide network of representatives and dealers, adding not only geographic coverage, but also depth of expertise, to respond more effectively to customer needs.

GSE DISPENSING DEBUT COLORSAT® SWITCH TO THE AMERICAS AT LABELEXPO 2014

G

SE Dispensing presents American narrow-web printers with its latest, automated, lean ink management solution specifically engineered for small ink batches at Labelexpo Americas (9th-11th September, stand 558, Rosemont, Illinois, Chicago). The Colorsat® Switch ensures a fast, precise and waste-free means of achieving spot color on demand. Maarten Hummelen, marketing director of GSE Dispensing, comments, “After the success at Labelexpo Europe, where the Colorsat Switch was sold to printers in Europe, North America and Africa, we are looking forward to similar interest from the US market at Labelexpo Americas. Our products provide modular solutions for any ink volume requirements, and offer optimal dosage accuracy for a waste-free process that typically improves ink yields by up to 30 percent.” As label design lifecycles become shorter and limited edition promotional messages more frequent, short lead-times can be challenging to deliver. There is no room for error, and labor-intensive, unpredictable manual ink mixing is not cost-effective. Automated gravimetric ink dispensing systems, like the Colorsat Switch, eliminate these production bottlenecks and provide converters with fast, accurate, repeatable color. The Colorsat Switch is engineered to dispense water-based, UV-curing or solvent-based ink batches into 1.3 gallon buckets with a typical fourcomponent recipe of 11lbs produced in less than four minutes and to 0.01lbs accuracy. It has a modular design that has a capacity of 20 base inks of 55lbs, or can optionally be connected to 55 or 275 gallon totes. Benefits include easy exchange of buckets with base components and fast dispensing of exact quantities of ink for each individual job, eliminating operator error and ink overproduction or shortfalls. This results in a lean workflow that helps to minimize prepress overheads and tighten margins. GSE also offers gravimetric dispensing units for quantities up to 1300lb and for a maximum of 32 different components. It can therefore provide solutions for a variety of print applications, from short-run labels to highvolume corrugated board production. The fast dispensing speeds are especially ideal for printing environments where different ink series are needed to ensure compatibility with a variety of substrates. In addition, all dispensing units use GSE's Ink Management Software (IMS™), a user-friendly production management tool. This enables the operator to see details of existing recipes, store new color specifications and find any return inks that are available and suitable in real-time. This significantly reduces waste and storage space, as well as providing transparent per-job ink costs to manage profit margins.

The Magnum Compact press has been announced as one the official GRAPH EXPO Must See ‘Ems for its unique high-automation design, enabling book, newspaper and commercial print runs as low as 500 copies.

For high-quality commercial printing, large and small printers continue to choose Goss Sunday press models. The trademark gapless blanket technology of Sunday presses eliminates the vibrations and the associated print defects such as bump streaking, doubling and web flutter, enabling premium-quality printing at higher speeds and on wider webs. Goss has maintained consistent leadership position in the U.S. commercial web market with

Sunday press models, frequently now featuring hybrid inkjet configurations, for high-quality publications, catalogs, retail inserts, direct mail and non-stop job and edition changes using Goss Automatic Transfer (AT) technology. According to Trevett, one project of particular note recently was at Creps United Publications, where production had been devastated by a fire: "Creps decided to turn this unfortunate event into a positive for the company by installing three new Goss Sunday insert presses, which have completely revitalized their entire production capabilities and efficiencies. It was a proud moment for all concerned to see this project come to full fruition." "Goss is focused on providing technology that is costeffective and easy to use, while our dedicated service ethic ensures the technology is matched to customer objectives and continues to remain relevant with evolving requirements," concludes D'Angelo. "We are proud to showcase these claims at GRAPH EXPO 2014." In support of its GRAPH EXPO technology showcase, Goss CEO Rick Nichols will host a breakfast meeting on Monday, September 29th at McCormick Place, to provide an update on corporate and product developments. Event attendance is by invitation only. More information is available by emailing: marketing.events@gossinternational.com.

DAILY THANTHI BOOSTS CIRCULATION AND READERSHIP, CITES INVESTMENT IN QUADTECH’S MULTICAM® SYSTEMS AS IMPORTANT FACTOR

T

amil-language newspaper cuts time to register by 20% and 10% waste reduction with QuadTech MultiCam systems at five sites Daily Thanthi Group has achieved significant time and waste savings at five sites of the leading Tamil-language newspaper, following the installation of QuadTech's Register Guidance and Ribbon Control systems with MultiCam®. Improved print quality is also credited with contributing to increased circulation and readership. "Until the installation of the QuadTech register and ribbon systems with MultiCam, we were measuring color and color register manually," said Mr. S. Balasubramanian Adityan, Daily Thanthi Director. "The biggest challenge came when the number of color pages increased; it was very difficult for operators to control register on our high-speed, double width and double circumference presses.

share in India. "Since installing the systems, we have seen a 20% reduction in the time taken to achieve good register, and a 10% reduction in waste. Our ability to maintain consistent color throughout the run has also increased, giving us better overall quality," said Mr. Adityan. "We used to face a challenge after each auto-pasting cycle, with variations in register, but that has been completely eliminated." The QuadTech Register Guidance System with MultiCam® offers unmatched color-register performance with operational flexibility. With lateral and circumferential register control, MultiCam searches marks as small as 0.36mm (0.014in) up to 30 times per second, even during makeready and upsets in web tension. The QuadTech Ribbon Control System with MultiCam provides a high level of ribbon control tasks including cut-off, print-to-cut, print-to-fold and

"The installation of the QuadTech systems benefits us in five ways: we can shorten make-ready times, reduce startup waste, achieve consistent color, and optimize labor and press usage, while also contributing towards a better product and increased readership," he said. The technology has been installed recently at four of Daily Thanthi's plants: in Cuddalore, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Nagercoil, in Tamil Nadu, in the southern Indian Peninsula. Two additional QuadTech systems have been in operation at the group's headquarters in Chennai since 2010-11. The choice of the QuadTech systems were based on the company's proven technology, reliability locally available spare parts and service support, and QuadTech's high market 32 | september-october 2014 | printingreview

crossover register. Both systems are operated from QuadTech's ICON™ platform with a user-friendly interface that facilitates quick and easy job setup, minimizes waste and integrates with downstream equipment such as UV coaters, perforators and rotary cutters. Speaking for QuadTech, Vinodhkumar Balakrishnan, Regional Sales Manager, QuadTech, said: "Daily Thanthi Group has been carrying out an investment program, renewing its press and ancillary technologies in its print centers. This has contributed not only to better print quality but also to a notable increase in the paper's circulation. We're very pleased that the Daily Thanthi Group has chosen QuadTech as a partner to bring about the changes that are contributing to this growth." More than just a newspaper

Established in 1942 with a mission to educate and create awareness among all sections of the Tamil community, Daily Thanthi today is a full-color broadsheet newspaper printed in 16 locations with a circulation of more than 1.5 million and an estimated readership in excess of 7 million. While carrying a full portfolio of news and features, the paper continues to fulfill its original educational mission, publishing model examination questions and answers, past examination papers and an annual career guide. With its long print runs and 15 editions covering a vast and varied area, spanning all of Tamil Nadu, and now including a Mumbai edition and an online edition, Daily Thanthi is reaching beyond Tamil Nadu to the worldwide Tamil community.

East India adapts Thermal Imaging Technology with Kodak CTP installations

SGIA EXPO 2014

Kodak announces the installation of Kodak CTP equipments in two key cities of East India! Joy Krishna Mohapatra, Managing Director at Mass Media, to choose the KODAK ACHIEVE T400 CTP Platesetter with KODAK PRINERGY Workflow to achieve their business needs. The small footprint of the Achieve has enabled Mass Media to bring their pre-press in-house, giving them better business control. With the new Kodak set-up in place, Mass Media is now a quality print provider delivering high-quality applications like diaries, magazines, book covers, brochures and other unique applications.

M

ilan Offset from Raipur, in business since 2009, saw the need to change their systems to save time. Mr. Ashish Kumar, Director at Milan Offset, firmly believes in delivering quality solutions for printing at highly competitive prices. To achieve this and increase their productivity, they installed KODAK ACHIEVE T400 CTP Platesetter with KODAK PRINERGY Workflow. Choosing Kodak was also a strategic choice in terms of using thermal imaging technology which provides quality differentiation over CTcP imaging. Kodak’s service support was also a strong factor for choice. The new setup has enabled Milan Offset to meet business goals and offer a higher level of service efficiency to customers too. There is now a positive change in quality while time efficiencies have improved as well. The relative simplification of print operations, better support to print operators and the extended benefits of using Kodak thermal plates have led to Milan Offset’s setting up of a quality printing operation. The overall improvement in business operations has helped Milan Offset acquire new customers as well. Cuttack’s Mass Media are book publishers with their own production house. Changing business landscapes prompted them to diversify into commercial printing in recent years. In a market dominated by Violet technology, they needed to differentiate and deliver high-quality imaging with thermal imaging. This led Mr.

Both, Milan Offset and Mass Media, are playing a part in increasing the footprint of Thermal imaging technology in the east-India market where offset printing predominantly uses Violet technology. v

WORLD’S FIRST AUTO-FOLLOW SPORTS DRONE SET FOR TAKE-OFF WITH STRATASYS 3D PRINTING

“Entirely 3D printed auto-follow device for GoPro cameras begins US tour”

S

tratasys Ltd. (Nasdaq:SSYS), a leading global provider of 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions, has announced that UAV start-up company, Helico, has successfully introduced AirDog, the world's first automated drone designed to track and video outdoor sports and activities, using Stratasys 3D printing technology. Aimed primarily at the consumer market, AirDog is an innovative, yet simple-to-use, ‘quad-copter' that operates via a wrist-worn tracking device and accommodates a standard GoPro sports camera. Users can automatically capture exciting live aerial video footage and still photography of themselves, having set distance, speed and height levels for AirDog to follow. Helico is specifically targeting the outdoor ‘extreme' sports market and expects AirDog to be of particular interest to recreational participants of freestyle BMX, motocross and skateboarding, as well as water-sports such as surfing, kite-surfing and wake-boarding. "AirDog not only grants end-users their own affordable and personal aerial video crew, but goes one step further in providing thrilling footage from distances and angles previously

inaccessible to such consumers," explains Edgars Rozentals, Cofounder and CEO of the Latvia-based, Helico Aerospace Industries. The Power of 3D printing Prior to investigating the use of 3D printed parts, Rozentals was trying silicon-molded designs through a supplier in China. However, not only did this entail a two-week turnaround time, but the resulting models proved to be too heavy for take-off and were ultimately scrapped. "The benefits delivered by 3D printing compared to the method we trialled originally are numerous", says Rozentals. "Above all, turnaround time is significantly reduced and if we need to make last minute changes to a design, we can do so within a matter of hours, easily and costeffectively. This was simply unachievable before as it necessitated time-consuming production of a costly new mold. "In fact, I'm not sure how we would have arrived at the stage of having a functional part, were it not for Stratasys 3D printing technology. I founded the company two years ago and we're a staff of three, so for startups like Helico, this technology isn't just a game-changer, but the ticket to

the game itself," he explains.

overall weight."

GETTING AIRDOG OFF THE GROUND WITH 3D PRINTING

Conversely, the accompanying AirLeash was developed using Stratasys' PolyJet multi-material 3D printing technology. 3D printed in a single pass, the wrist-worn device combines rigid and rubber-like materials to produce everything from the robust housing case to the soft buttons on the keypad. "Airdog is a perfect example of how 3D printing is an enabler for inventors looking to turn their ideas into fully-operational parts quickly and effectively," says Andy Middleton, Senior Vice President and General Manager EMEA at Stratasys. "In this case, both our core 3D printing technologies have proved instrumental in producing a fully-functional drone and wrist device. With the exception of the advanced sensor technology, both parts have been created entirely using 3D printing." A Stratasys 3D printed version of AirDog will preview this month, as Helico executives begin a month-long promotional roadshow in the US to generate interest among end-users within the extreme sports scene. If successful, and pending contractual agreements with relevant manufacturers, Helico expects to commercially introduce AirDog to the market at the end of October, 2014.

According to Rozentals, AirDog might literally have not got off the ground, had it not been for the instrumental role 3D printing played during the prototyping phase. The company sought the expertise of Stratasys' Latvian partner, Baltic3D, who also worked with Polish reseller Bibus Menos to meet the requirements outlined by Helico's team. In order to produce fully-functional parts that could perform in the real environment, both Stratasys' FDM and PolyJet 3D printing technologies were employed for AirDog and its AirLeash tracking device, respectively. The final AirDog drone was fully 3D printed using Stratasys' FDM-based ULTEM material, chosen thanks to its ability to provide parts of extreme strength and durability, with the lightweight characteristics vital for take-off and in-flight manoeuvrability. "We were particularly impressed by how far we could push the boundaries of the ULTEM material," adds Rozentals. "The material's functional stability enabled us to print very thin walls that further reduced AirDog's

CLP INSTALLS ISRAEL’S FIRST QUADTECH INSPECTION SYSTEM FOR THE ELIMINATION OF WHITE INK

Q

uadTech Inspection System removes need for white ink for print inspection on translucent and transparent substrates, enabling time and money savings QuadTech has sold its first Inspection System in Israel, to CLP of Kibbutz Negba. Installed on a new eight-color gravure press, the QuadTech system was chosen for its ability to inspect translucent and transparent flexible packaging materials, without the need for white ink-simplifying production and enabling substantial financial savings. Prior to its QuadTech purchase, CLP had been printing white to provide a target to help other inspection systems function on these very common substrates. However, as white ink wasn't requested by customers, it was a cost that CLP had to absorb. This not only included ink costs, but also extended to prepress time, flexo plates and gravure cylinders too.

QuadTech Inspection System." To eliminate the practice of printing white to facilitate inspection, the QuadTech Inspection System uses a combination of three LED lights, one of which is a reflected light illuminating the back of the web. The resulting image on the control screen can then be adjusted to show a black, white or gray background to create the necessary contrast to enable accurate fault detection and eliminate the additional ink. Inspecting 100% of the web 100% of the time, the QuadTech Inspection System detects process faults including spots, streaks, mis-prints, mis-register, color variation, contamination, dry-in and haze. With an easyto-use operator interface and fast setup, the QuadTech Inspection System provides a high level of quality

assurance for converters and their customers. "We are very pleased that, throughout the process, QuadTech worked closely with us to support our needs," continues Israel Moran. "They demonstrated a real willingness to address the challenges we faced, providing a genuine partnership approach to customer service. "The QuadTech Inspection System has been everything we had hoped for and by eradicating the white ink step, we have been able to enjoy significant savings," he concludes. Part of the Tadbik Group, CLP serves customers in the food, medical and

healthcare markets. It is widely known as a producer of high quality flexible packaging for brands, but also as a developer of innovative applications including retort laminates and pouches, taste-free water packaging and other creative solutions. Caroline Zimmer, QuadTech regional sales leader, comments, "We were very pleased to help solve this technical challenge for CLP. With brands demanding ever more exacting print quality standards, it is increasingly important for businesses such as CLP to find technologies to meet their needs, but also, do this while reducing overall costs and increasing profitability. We look forward to further sales in Israel."

"While quality control is a top priority for us, it was an expensive process to undertake on translucent and transparent substrates. So, when we decided to install a new Windmöller & Hölscher press, we took the opportunity to see if there was a solution on the market that could inspect without the need to print white for inspection," explained Israel Moran, Supply Chain Manager at CLP. "Fortunately, following a visit to the QuadTech stand at drupa 2012, we quickly established that there was. This resulted in the installation of our printingreview | september-october 2014 | 37

BRILLANT VEHICLE WRAP SPEEDS BARLEY MCNAUGHTON INTO POLE POSITION WITH ORAJET

W

hen the motor-sport division of construction and refurbishment specialists Barley McNaughton were looking to rebrand its new race car trailer, brand and design experts Brilliant Media turned to Orajet, supplied by Antalis, to transform a plain, full-sized articulated lorry into one of the most talked-about transporters on the racing circuit. For the full service cross media production company, the opportunity to start with a totally blank canvas gave the design and branding team at Brilliant Media the chance to put their flair for innovation and creativity in to action. “Then came the bombshell,” explained Tony Kenton, Branding and marketing director at Brilliant Media. “Our client needed the lorry finished, roadworthy and ready to go in just two weeks as they were heading to Spa in Belgium for their next race!” The challenge not only included an extremely tight deadline, the design team also had to create a strikingly different brand for Barley McNaughton’s motor sport division, reflect an element of its classic racing history, while still remaining true to the

values of its core business.

demands of racing life.

“We knew we had to include both the brand and the cars in some way; then we had a Brilliant idea!” enthused Kenton.

“We used a carefully managed production process to execute the 1,350 sq ft printed wrap, labelling where each set of drops were as they came off the printer, through the

The Brilliant team created an architectural line illustration as a backdrop along the entire length and back of the lorry to highlight the company’s construction heritage. This was then given the appearance of being peeled back to reveal the interior of the truck by presenting 1:1 scale photographic images of both the team’s touring cars and Jeff’s classics.” This bold design concept needed the very best substrates and print technology as well as precision execution in order to deliver this scale of project within the extremely tight two week window. “There was no room for error and no time for reprints, so we needed to be confident that our choice of substrate would be suitable for the job,” said Kenton. “We therefore chose Orajet 3951RA vinyl from our suppliers Antalis, because we needed a consistent, highly reliable wrapping film, which would remain stable print after print, as well as conform well to the deep recesses of the trailer.” By using Orajet with its matching gloss overlaminate, Brillant was able to achieve an incredibly high standard wrap that would withstand the rigors of long distance travel and the heavy

gassing-off stage and then as they received the matching Antalis gloss overlaminate to ensure each panel lined up perfectly,” explained Kenton. “Orajet conformed really well to the deep recesses of the trailer and was a consistent and highly reliable

wrapping film that remained stable throughout the print and installation process.” “Having worked with Antalis for a very long time and built a relationship of trust in their team and their products, we knew that their expertise, help and support would be on hand at any time should we need it during our tight production schedule.” “Antalis is a great addition to our

business – our clients no longer think all paper is the same – they want the highest quality substrate that can offer something special to their projects. We can always rely on Antalis to keep us up to date with the latest developments and new products as well as provide samples that really stand out when we show our clients examples, giving them a competitive edge over other suppliers.” The stunning newly-branded articulated

trailer was presented to Barley McNaughton who were speechless at the transformation. The project was delivered with a day to spare, and drew considerable comment and admiration from fellow race teams on arrival in Belgium, in particular from the McLaren Formula One crew who declared that ‘it would not look out of place in an F1 paddock.” So delighted with the outcome of the project, that Barley

McNaughton commissioned the Brilliant Media team to wrap the race car itself as well as all its pit graphics panels.

“Whilst we are no strangers to using Orajet to wrap vehicles, this is definitely the one we are most proud of to date,” concluded Kenton. To see what Antalis can do for your substrate requirements, visit www.antalis.co.uk

GOSS INVITES LABELEXPO AMERICAS VISITORS TO DISCOVER NEW WEB OFFSET SOLUTIONS FOR LABELS AND PACKAGING PRODUCTION

G

oss International will exhibit at Labelexpo Americas on 9-11 September, presenting unique offset opportunities on booth #1824 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont, Illinois. Addressing the trend towards shorter run lengths, Goss will illustrate how flexible configurations featuring Sunday Vpak press technology can deliver a compelling proposition for high-quality label and flexible packaging applications. "With the rise in SKUs, print runs that are too long for digital, but too short for profitability are putting pressure on printers and converters," explains Peter Walczak, Goss International director of product management for packaging presses. "Our web offset solution can turn marginal short-run jobs into sustainable, profitable ones, with the advantage of plate and imaging costs that are a fraction of those associated with flexo and gravure. Web offset also ensures far greater flexibility and control, and allows converters to offer their customers later artwork deadlines." Other capabilities that reinforce the argument, according to Goss, include: premium print quality, greater color control and the standardized, repeatable web offset process, as well as the ability to handle a wide variety of substrates, including films as low as nine microns, at high speeds. The Goss commitment to the packaging and label sector was underlined earlier this year with the launch in April of its Packaging Technology Center at the Company headquarters in Durham, NH, USA. Featuring a Sunday Vpak 500 press with seven web offset units, EB and UV curing, and flexo coating, the Center provides demonstrations, testing and educational programs for customers and prospective customers. To date, it has been used in a variety of configurations and sequences printing substrates for in-mold and shrink labels as well as cut-and-stack labels and stand-up pouches. Precision Press (USA) installed the first Vpak 500 press system for label and flexible packaging applications last year and Goss has since shipped the wider format Vpak 3000 press to an undisclosed customer for board printing. Goss Vpak 500 and Vpak 3000 web offset press models for folding carton, flexible packaging, pre-print and label applications are available in web widths from 520 mm to 1905 mm (20.5 to 75 inches) and print at speeds of up to 457 meters (1,500 feet) per minute. Key features include quickchange sleeve adapter technology for efficient, cost-effective size changes, and advanced offset inking, tension and control systems. "With options for integrating flexo, gravure and digital stations into a Vpak press configuration to form a hybrid production line, this technology delivers flexibility without compromise," continues Walczak. "Any converters or brand owners feeling the pressure on lead times and price for short to medium run lengths should come and see us at Labelexpo Americas to find out more about the game-changing capabilities of Sunday Vpak technology," he concludes.

Higher output and less effort with short grain KBA C56 SG: ENORMOUS PRODUCTIVITY WITH 56 PAGES IN SHORT GRAIN

C

urrently, there are several new trends in commercial web offset. On the one hand reaching the highest possible page output per cylinder revolution with so called high-volume presses with up to 96 long-grain pages and on the other hand there is a focus on achieving the highest possible quality, production flexibility and economic efficiency supported by shorter makeready for smaller job runs up to 10,000 copies. The cutting-edge 16-page KBA C16 is tailored to the second trend. It works with long grain pages, with the pages arranged on the plates in the direction of the web travel. Short-grain doublecircumference presses, with the pages arranged at right angles to the web travel, are less common and not as well-known. These presses have enormous potential in terms of format flexibility, productivity and saving time when finishing. The concept of the new 56-page short-grain KBA C56 SG is based on exploiting this potential. One of these presses together with a C48 SG (48 pages in short grain) have been in operation at a long-standing Dutch KBA user, Em de Jong in Baarle-Nassau, for some time now. Short grain boosts productivity Maximum output is limited by the maximum possible web speed Individual drives commonly found in parts, such as the reelstand or folder, in modern presses like the C16 and C56 SG could achieve higher web speeds than the physical characteristics of the substrate used allow, in terms of stability, stretching and shrinking. Short-grain presses can produce about 30% more printed

sections per hour compared to longgrain presses running at the same production speed because of their smaller cylinder circumferences. For example, when comparing a 96-page long-grain press and a 56-page shortgrain press, the 96-page press has 40% more page capacity on the cylinder. However, given the C56 SG’s higher cylinder speed, the hourly output of a 96-page press is only just 10% higher. The format size therefore does not determine the productivity of a commercial web press, a fact which is often forgotten. No quar ter fold necessar y A further advantage of short grain production can be seen in the folder. When printing A4 (8.27 x 11.7in) or similar sized products long-grain presses must have a quarterfold, but this is not the case in short grain. For physical reasons the quarterfold is, vendor-independent, the bottleneck. Before the product reaches the folder delivery, the printed section is first folded lengthways (former fold), is then cross folded (first cross fold) and is finally folded lengthways for a second time, the so called quarterfold. Every time the substrate is mechanically tampered with it is put under more physical strain, which when printing products with a high page count can limit the maximum possible running speed. This differs to short grain: the web is slit and the ribbons are processed individually. Only the first length fold and the first cross fold are needed to produce products similar to longgrain products. The way in which the web is processed is similar to publication gravure printing. Many years ago KBA’s TRB presses reached

50 | september-october 2014 | printingreview

a web speed of 17m/s and more. We have transferred the know-how we gathered back then to today’s commercial press superstructures and folders with success. Enormous product range and fewer finishing tasks The unique ergonomic-handling and accessibility of KBA superstructures is valued by printers the world over. Anyone who has ever moved ribbons or removed old webs from a press knows how valuable a generous amount of space is. This has traditionally been taken into account in KBA web presses and allows press operators to carry out their work comfortably and without any large obstacles. This is especially supported by the cantilevered turner bars. The C48 SG’s superstructure configuration allows for production with up to six ribbons. Up to eight ribbons can be processed by a former in the C56 SG. Optional extras, such as a skip slitter, a ribbon and section stitcher, can lead to a raft of new product options. In this way sewn A4 products (8.27 x 11.7in) can be processed in folded A3 envelopes (11.7 x 16.54in) inline at top speed, which is suitable for large supermarkets and mail-order companies whose typical advertising products contain stitched inserts. This renders the time-consuming inserting of supplements into the ‘main product’ in a separate step superfluous. Inserting lines in finishing as well as the costly pre-production and the temporary storage of halffinished products before finishing are no longer necessary when producing in this way. Having a raft of production options only makes sense if the

print quality is good. Over 15 years ago KBA developed and launched metal blanket technology which supports a more precise circumferential register than sleeve technology. In contrast to sleeves, metal blankets cannot form so called ‘waves’, as the

end of the metal blanket fits exactly into the rubber blanket channel. Automation also with large print runs Today it is hard to imagine printing small- to medium-run jobs without automatic plate changers. When printing large print jobs of more than 250,000 copies the shorter makeready times are economically less important, but a higher level of process stability is essential. This also reduces the possibility of damaging the printing plates when mounting

them manually, for example. It should not be forgotten that the plates for the C48 SG are 890 x 2,060mm (35 x 81in) and 890 x 2,280mm (35 x 90in) for the C56 SG, are larger than a normal house door. Therefore KBA offers a plate transport system from the plate processor to the upper or lower printing units. All KBA commercial web presses have an automated start-up phase and optimised control technology to cut waste and to allow the printer to

have a standardised press start-up and stop. KBA’s 16pp commercial web offset presses set new benchmarks with only a seven minute job change including paper and/or adjusting the web width (without changes to the ribbon lead). This can be done simply by pressing a button or automatically at the end of the run planned. The so called EasyPaperChange is made possible by the full integration of the KBA reelstands in the console and control technology and therefore ensures

that the system is completely integrated. Something which not all of our competitors offer. So far the C56 SG at Em. de Jong in Baarle-Nassau is the only 56-page short-grain press with a web width of 2,280mm (89.76in) in action worldwide. Interest in high-volume short-grain presses is great and we are confident that soon further printing houses will invest in this economically attractive technology from KBA.

xpoprint 2014, the largest and most important trade show in Latin America, took place from 16 to 22 July. KBA manned a joint stand at the exhibition in São Paulo together with subsidiary Koenig & Bauer do Brasil and its cooperation partners MBO and AMS. On a stand measuring 336m² the company presented cutting-edge sheetfed offset technology including the medium-format KBA Rapida 105, which is particularly popular in Asia and Latin America, and modern folding technology from MBO. The KBA stand was full of activity from the moment the trade show opened its doors with visitors flocking to see the print demos. A raft of decisionmakers from Brazilian printing firms and print pundits from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Mexico and

Columbia all visited the KBA stand. Live print demonstrations were carried out on six-colour press raised by 450mm (17.7in) with coater and delivery extension. It featured semiautomatic plate changers, CleanTronic Impact (combined blanket, impression cylinder and roller washing system), nonstop roller facility in the delivery as well as a board handling package and a maximum output of 16,000sph. The shaftless DriveTronic feeder and inking units which can be uncoupled are unique features from KBA. Colour density was measured by ErgoTronic ColorDrive directly at the press’ console. RAPIDA 105 AND MBO FOLDING SYSTEMS IN OPERATION The Rapida 105 printed car posters that were very popular with the

visitors in Brazil live several times a day, as well as KBA maps of the world, which have also proven to be in great demand. Some of the print samples showed matt-gloss effects using the drip-off technique. Together with dryer manufacturer AMS (Air Motion Systems), KBA presented innovative drying processes, such as HR-UV and LED-UV. This technology was shown recently at a well-attended customer event at the KBA plant in Radebeul. Presentations on workflow solutions and MIS systems were also made. KBA works closely together with Kodak, Optimus, Logica, MBO, Montex, Müller Martini and other technology partners.

This is the firm’s second Rapida 105. A further, nearly identical Rapida 105 is currently being installed at Emibra in Suzano, São Paulo. This is the longstanding KBA user’s third Rapida. Brasilgrafica in Alphaville has invested annually in KBA technology since 2012 and in the meantime also has three Rapidas. Brasilgrafica recently received its first large-format press, a Rapida 145. However, this impressive press with seven printing units and two coaters is still unusual in the Brazilian printing industry.

The established packaging printer APICE will receive a Rapida 106 that has similar kit and a two-colour Rapida 106 with coater is currently being fired up at Cartondruck Grafica in Blumenau. KBA is anticipating a boost to business over the coming months
