Congratulation

And Congratulations!

As the days get shorter there’s a distinct nip in the autumn breeze, so there’s no better time to snuggle up with your loved one and research where’s hot and where’s not in preparation for your forthcoming destination wedding and honeymoon. Remember, the wonderful thing about weddings and honeymoons abroad is that it’s always summer somewhere! And we’re here to help you find the sunshine. And if you are seeking a totally ‘chilled’ celebration, we can point you in the right direction for snowy white weddings too, at any time of year (Seasons in Style p.120) As the Mediterranean season winds down for the winter, two of our favourite regions come alive – the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean. If your dream wedding is on a tropical island, with amazing sunsets and the turquoise ocean lapping at your feet then you will adore Mauritius (p.22). Whilst if you want to hear the sensuous calypso or reggae beat as a backdrop to your wedding, then head to the white sandy beaches of the Caribbean and marry in the shade of swaying coconut palms. For all you need to know about tying the knot on the exotic Caribbean Island of the Dominican Republic, see p.48. If you are seeking sun-drenched islands closer to home, then they don’t come much more romantic than Santorini, jewel of the Greek Aegean Islands. Say ‘I do” from your whitewashed cliff top hotel with breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. Clear azure skies and long, balmy evenings are assured, fuelled by firey Metaxa. Fantastic! (see p.72). Perhaps you are looking for a wedding with some real oomph? Then check out our Wow Weddings USA, with everything from shotgun weddings to being given away by Elvis! (p.76) For honeymooners, the blissful list is endless – from combination honeymoons in the Maldives and Sri Lanka (p.100) and lush St Lucia (p.116) to truly Tasty Pampermoons (p.112) at the world’s best spa resorts. Turn to p.130 for our amazing honeymoon offers, and be sure to check out our website www.bridesabroad.tv and book through us for the best honeymoon advice and deals, or call the Brides Abroad Travel Desk on: 0800 211 8255.

School friends marry in Mauritius

Rebecca and Martyn seal their love in a stunning beach ceremony 26 www.BridesAbroad.tv

N

ot many people get to marry their first love, but for Rebecca Herbert and her classmate Martyn Thorp it was the most natural thing in the world. Social care worker Martyn couldn’t believe his luck when Rebecca, an English Lecturer from Kent, agreed to be his girlfriend when they were still at school and barely into their teens. And when the pair finally tied the knot on a Mauritian beach thirteen years later, everyone agreed it was a match made in heaven!

Finding ‘the one’ Rebecca: We first met at secondary school when we were about twelve-yearsold. We spoke for the first time on the school field during a lunch break; we were friends from that moment on. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight. Martyn was my friend whom I cared for. After he asked me to be his girlfriend when we were fourteen, I instantly regretted saying “yes” as I thought it would ruin our friendship. My mum urged me to give him a week, as he’d been so persistent. After a while we shared our first kiss. I fell in love with him right there. Nearly thirteen years later, we’re still together. He may not have had me at “hello”, but he had me at the kiss. We’ve quite literally grown up together. He still gives me butterflies! Martyn: For me, it was love at first sight. I saw Rebecca on the school field sitting amongst her friends, smiling. I just stood back, admiring her smile and I plucked up the courage to talk to her. I’m so glad I did. I knew instantly this was the girl I was going to marry. Over time, we grew quite close and my feelings grew stronger. I tried for some time to persuade Rebecca to be my girlfriend. All my efforts paid off the moment she said “yes”. I’m glad I persisted as I’ve married my best friend and the wife of my dreams.

The proposal Martyn: We went to a small village in Zakynthos, Greece for our ten-year anniversary. Rebecca had just qualified as a lecturer and I couldn’t have been more proud. I knew I was going to propose before we went but as Rebecca knows me better than I know myself, it’s very hard to surprise her. For the entire holiday I carried the engagement ring, waiting for the right moment. I knew she wouldn’t want a grand romantic gesture, shared in front of strangers so one morning we woke up very early and took a walk along the beach to watch the sunrise. As the sun appeared, I got down on one knee on the shoreline and asked if she would be my wife and share the rest of her life with me. Rebecca: We couldn’t stop crying and laughing simultaneously. A magical moment I will never forget. I always knew we would get married and grow old together but the proposal was very unexpected. I did joke before we left by asking Martyn if he’d remembered to pack the ring. Obviously, I never really expected it to happen. He managed the impossible, to surprise me!

Location, location Travel and experiencing other cultures is very important to us and it is a big part of our lives. We have large families and have attended weddings before in the UK where they feel impersonal and the meaning of the day is lost. We always said we did not want this and my parents fully supported our decision to have a destination wedding. A wedding abroad is an exciting and beautiful experience and an opportunity to create life long memories and the day maintains its true meaning. Love.

Our dream wedding cost a fraction of a wedding in the UK and we also had our dream honeymoon included. Mauritius has always been on our wish list. We had never seen the Indian Ocean and it exceeded all our expectations. We got married in paradise with natural, aweinspiring beauty as our backdrop.

The planning As we were really busy with work, my mum helped us and researched travel companies and came across Tropical Sky – a company with a great reputation that specialises in weddings abroad. They offer Beachcomber hotels in lots of wonderful locations, which only ever have one wedding per day so it really does feel like it’s your special day. We chose Le Victoria for our wedding and honeymoon. Upon arrival at Le Victoria we were introduced to our wonderful wedding planner, Deveena and her team who arranged everything down the finest detail to ensure we had the most magical day of our lives. Tropical Sky was very helpful, they answered all questions and nothing was too much trouble. Before we went to Mauritius we arranged the music for the ceremony and reception, bought the cake topper, eco friendly flower petals and sky lanterns, personalised lottery/scratch card tickets and holders for the favours, booked a sunset cruise independently as a surprise for our guests after the ceremony and booked the beach barbeque for the reception and a harpist to play during our dinner.

The guests Ten members of our family joined us. They stayed with us at Le Victoria for one week. We stayed for two weeks for our honeymoon. We made sure we gave two years notice to all family and friends we invited so everybody had sufficient www.BridesAbroad.tv 27

time to save. The most important people in our lives worked incredibly hard to ensure they were with us to share our special day and embraced our decision. We wouldn’t change the intimate number for anything. As the saying goes, the people that mind don’t matter and the people that matter, don’t mind.

Getting the look Everyone kept saying, “When you see the dress, you’ll know”. Six weeks before we flew out to Mauritius, my mum and I were walking past a bridal store and I saw ‘the one’ through the window. I instantly knew it was the dress I would marry Martyn in. Keeley, the wonderful owner of Bridal Way, ensured all alterations were complete in time. It’s very different, which I like – it’s timeless and harks back to an era of Hollywood glamour and femininity. The neckline is beautiful and the lace, beading detail throughout the dress is intricate and classic. I wanted the dress to be the statement so we kept accessories to a minimum. I wore a delicate bracelet, stud earrings and a vintage inspired hair comb. Our wedding package included hair and makeup (with a trial). However, although the lady did a beautiful job, I wanted something natural so decided to do it myself. I loosely pinned up my hair with tendrils falling down.

Groom & groomsmen Martyn wore a fitted white shirt and stone coloured chinos with a singular white flower buttonhole. Martyn was very close to his granddad who passed away some years ago. His Nan gave Martyn his ring to wear for the day so he was with us. The groomsmen and my dad wore a darker shade of chino and white cotton shirts. They also wore white buttonholes plus matching

28 www.BridesAbroad.tv

mirrored aviators, which made for great photo opportunities and were practical for a setting in paradise.

The details We didn’t decide on a specific theme for our wedding, we just wanted the emphasis on the setting so we kept everything elegant and simple. In such a stunning environment we felt there was no need to theme the wedding. As for the flowers, we wanted them to be tropical and part of the Mauritian culture in a variation of white shades, which complemented the natural white sands and Indian Ocean beautifully. I requested a couple of lilies in my bouquet too as I love the scent. I wanted natural, wild looking flowers with no real formality. The flowers on the catamaran cruise were gorgeous with sprays of white and burnt orange which complemented the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen. The hotel pressed my bouquet and Martyn’s buttonhole so we have a forever keepsake of our special day. Martyn opted for a luxury chocolate cake. All our guests said it was the best chocolate cake they have ever had. Due to there being only ten guests we were only expecting a one-tiered cake but instead, we had three.

The ceremony We were shown a number of possible locations for our ceremony, and after flipping a coin (as they were all so wonderful), we decided on the decking which overlooked the spectacular beach with Port Louis in the far distance. The ceremony lasted about twenty-five minutes. My dad and I walked down the aisle to Peter Gabriel’s Book of Love and Martyn and I wrote our own vows

– there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. We had gone to Port Louis two days before the wedding to get all the legals completed. It was an adventure and really easy as we had a private taxi driver and a legal aid accompanying us.

Local customs and rituals In Mauritius, they cut the cake straight after the ceremony and we asked for the cake to be brought out after the ceremony to have pictures taken with all our guests. My bouquet contained some delicate streams of ribbon, which I also believe is very traditional in a Mauritian wedding. It also rained on and off throughout the day but we were told in Mauritius it is considered a Hindu marriage blessing from the Gods. We embraced this idea and we felt we were truly blessed.

The reception After the ceremony we treated our guests to a catamaran sunset cruise. We arrived back at the hotel and walked along the beach where the reception was held in a striking tent overlooking the Indian Ocean, which was lit beautifully and draped in silk organza and surrounded by Tikki torches on the shoreline. The staff were waiting for us with the chef’s cooking stations set up and our personal music selection playing as we all arrived. The food was fresh, locally sourced and absolutely incredible with plenty of choice to suit every taste. It was quite a feast! The tables were lit by candles and dusted in white hydrangea flower petals. We also had a beautiful marlin (Mauritian fish) ice sculpture, which was unexpected and surrounded with green berries and foliage.

The hotel also gave us our very own beach bar – it was like something from a movie set, we couldn’t have hoped for more!

Evening entertainment Our harpist played during dinner, accompanied by a Spanish acoustic guitar, which was magical with the moonlit ocean as our backdrop. We also had a wooden dance floor on the sand. The Wedding Singer has always been one of our favourite films, so it only seemed right to have I Wanna Grow Old With You from the movie as our First Dance. The words in it are wonderful and it defines for us what we believe real love is. At the end of the evening, we all stood on the shoreline and lit eco friendly lanterns that we had purchased in England. We made a wish and watched them drift over the ocean.

Photographic memories Our fantastic photographer, Ibrahim Boss, was provided by the hotel and he allowed us to just enjoy the day. He gave us a beautiful photo album and two DVD discs full of pictures. My dad set up a video camera so the ceremony, dances and speeches were recorded. The photographer asked if he could return two days after the wedding and take more photos of us dressed casually on the beach, which was exceptional and completely unexpected. My favourite wedding photo is of Martyn and I walking along the beach. We’d waited so long to get married – as I held Martyn’s hand, I felt so lucky to have this moment, standing beside the man I have loved since I was fourteen.

Magic moments For me the most magical moment was walking down the aisle and seeing Martyn’s

face and the overwhelming feeling of happiness when we were first pronounced as husband and wife. We also witnessed an end-to-end rainbow and watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean with our families was incredible. I will never forget these wonderful memories and will still smile when I’m old and grey.

Any disasters? Where to begin? I had contracted a sickness bug and unfortunately the worst day of it was on our wedding day. I spent some of the day being sick and Martyn holding my dress up and my hair back while I leant over a loo. I couldn’t eat a thing but enjoyed watching everyone else enjoy the wonderful food and drink. I refused to allow it to ruin our day so I powered through and tried to soak up every last moment. Also, the shop where I purchased my wedding underwear left the security tag on so I couldn’t wear them. My bag was searched at Heathrow and my vows were left behind, so on the morning of the wedding I had to make them up on the spot. Although all this happened, I wouldn’t change a thing. The day was perfect and as Martyn was rubbing my back as we watched the sunset out of the window in the catamaran toilet, I knew I’d married the right man and that what we have, is stuff of everlasting love.

On budget? The Luxury Wedding Package, flights, accommodation and the all-inclusive option for two weeks cost around £5,300. Altogether with the additional costs such as the wedding clothes, favours, petals, lanterns, the harpist, catamaran cruise and beach barbeque it cost about £8,000. Our package included: all legal and registrar fees, Champagne and fruit in our room on arrival, breakfast set up on our balcony

the morning after our wedding, flower petals scattered throughout our room and a drawn petal-filled bath, Champagne on our wedding night, the pressing and framing of my bouquet and Martyn’s button hole, hair and makeup, wedding cake, a bridal manicure and pedicure, a couple’s massage, a framed marriage certificate and a five course dinner which we saved for our final night in a private location on the beach. We both worked incredibly hard for our dream wedding/honeymoon and we can honestly say it was worth every single penny and more. We were within budget and could not imagine getting all of the above in a UK wedding. The service was impeccable and we can’t fault the hotel at all. We’re actually saving to return for our anniversary.

The honeymoon We didn’t feel the need to change locations for our honeymoon, as it was literally heaven on Earth. Most of our family stayed for a week and we had the second week as our honeymoon, however my parents and brothers stayed for the full two weeks and it was lovely, bumping into them in the evening for a drink and they completely respected our privacy.

From Oz to Mauritius

Pippa and Mathieu say “I do” in two languages 32 www.BridesAbroad.tv

W

hen Mathieu Faure-Geors met Australian dancer Pippa West, who was performing in the music hall where he worked in France, they were both swept off their feet as they fell head over heals in love. When they tied the knot soon after, they chose a delightful beach resort on the island of Mauritius, where they said, “I do” in both English and French.

Finding ‘the one’ We met at Les Folies Du Lac, a music hall near Valence, France. I was working as a dancer in the show and Mathieu was working in the bar. It was love at first sight.

The proposal He proposed to me in the garage of our house in Perth. Mathieu had everything planned and arranged to take a day off, however his boss changed his day off at the last minute, so he had to propose sooner than expected. Mathieu had planned to ask me in the backyard, but as it was such a stormy day, he improvised in the garage. I got home from work and as I opened the garage roller door, there was a sign attached to it saying ‘surprise’. As I looked in, I saw he had decorated the brick wall at the back with a sign he had constructed with flowers and sticks, which said, in French, “Veux-tu m’epouser?” (Will you marry me?) He came out dressed up in his suit jacket with a rose and a big smile, got on his knee and gave me the ring. He then made a delicious homemade French meal.

Location, location Mat is French and I am Australian. We needed a place half way between the two countries that spoke in both French and English. We also had a lot of international guests. We needed a location where everyone could relax and have a holiday together. We had decided on Mauritius three years ago. My parents went over there to look at the hotels and talk to the wedding coordinators. They decided Le Mauricia was the best hotel for us because of its location in Grand Baie and they were happy with the rooms and other amenities of the hotel.

The planning We used the services of the wedding coordinator at the hotel to help us plan our wedding. I booked our flights through my work at American Express Travel. The accommodation and transfers were booked through Tropical Sky UK. We planned as much as we could before leaving Australia. We took our own table decorations but didn’t make final decisions about the ceremony, flowers, photographer, the reception location and menu until we arrived at the hotel. It rained on the day, so we had to change things around. The hotel staff were very flexible.

The guests There were 41 people altogether at our wedding, and all but one stayed at our www.BridesAbroad.tv 33

hotel. About 1/3 of the people we invited accepted our invitation – others would have liked to come but their budgets or life commitments didn’t allow it.

Getting the look I bought my wedding dress from a local store – a simple satin dress with a train by an Italian designer, Fiorenza, who lives in Brisbane. The dress has thick straps into a V-neck with beading in the v and under the bust. I accessorized it with a finger length veil with beading. I also wore diamond and pearl earrings. My hair and makeup came as part of the wedding package – the hotel arranged for someone to come and do them for me.

Something old, something new? Something Old – my Nan’s wedding ring; New – my earrings; Borrowed – my mum’s diamond ring; Blue – a garter with a blue bow. 34 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Groom & bridesmaids Mathieu wore a black suit by Cambridge, white shirt with cuff links, watermelon colour tie and a buttonhole flower. The bridesmaids wore watermelon colour, full length dresses made of flowing chiffon with shoestring straps, gathering with beading under the bust.

The details The theme for our wedding was beach/ starfish. I also chose beautiful flowers including anthurium, orchids, lilies, roses, and bougainvillea. The hotel supplied a twotier simple butter wedding cake.

The ceremony Our 30-minute ceremony was held at the hotel in a beautiful location overlooking the ocean. It was conducted in both French and English, and we were married by a civil

celebrant from Grand Baie. My father Ian gave me away.

The reception Afterwards we had a buffet reception in the a la carte restaurant Nautica. There was plenty of choice and the meal was very well presented, with an Entrée table with sea urchins, mussels, oysters, mis en bouche and salads; Main table with half a lobster, grilled fish, chicken etc. and Desert table with a variety of deserts. Our table decoration reflected our lives – with place cards on little Eiffel Towers to represent France; Little bonboneries of orange, pink and white sugar almonds in a little bag with an orange feather to represent my time as a showgirl in France; Black lanterns surrounded by flowers and little orange glass candle holders with tea lights in them. For our First Dance we chose Newton Faulkner’s Dream Catch Me. After the meal my parents arranged for The Sega dancers

(Mauritian dancers) to perform and dance with us. There was also a musical trio, plus a DJ playing music in between. After the reception we all went down to the beach and lit paper lanterns and sent them up into the sky and made a wish.

Customs and traditions Mat’s older sisters had to eat raw onions as part of a French tradition, which says that if a younger sibling marries before the older ones then they have to eat a raw onion!

Photographic memories The hotel offered us a choice of two photographers. The photos were printed into a book, and a friend of ours videoed the day for us.

Magic moments My favourite memory was of Mat seeing me for the very first time walking towards him. The funniest moment was when one of the paper lanterns got stuck in the palm tree. The only disaster was the rain, but it didn’t spoil our day at all.

On budget? The whole wedding cost us £13,000. We didn’t budget, but we didn’t go crazy either. We wanted it to be a memorable day for everyone.

The honeymoon We stayed at the hotel for a second week for our honeymoon. The majority of the people left after the first week and we had a handful that stayed for the second week. The hotel offered us an upgrade to a family villa for pre-wedding preparations for the bridesmaids and me and then Mat and I stayed in there for four nights, so this gave us a bit of privacy. But then again we still wanted to spend time with our family and friends as they were from France, England, USA, Hong Kong and other parts of Australia. It was a wonderful opportunity for us all to get together.

Traditional Weddings in

Sri Lanka

For a truly unique wedding celebration head to exotic Sri Lanka and embrace the local culture with a traditional wedding amid breathtakingly beautiful scenery

40

www.BridesAbroad.tv

There are many ways to say “I do” during a destination wedding, however a traditional Poruwa wedding celebration in Sri Lanka has to rank as one of the most magical ways for couples to begin married life. Sri Lanka is a beautiful tropical island at the toe of India with mystical ancient cities, thick jungles, tea plantations and miles of glorious sandy beaches making it one of the most scenically interesting islands in the world. For couples seeking a picture-perfect wedding destination, Sri Lanka is hard to beat. With its magnificent gardens, bright tropical sunshine, endless beaches and brilliant blue hues of the Indian Ocean, you will discover the most romantic backdrop for the most important day of your life.

Sri Lankan weddings Couples who decide to marry in Sri Lanka will be spoilt for choice in many ways. They can marry with the sun setting behind them over the Indian Ocean or in the heat of the day on the lush lawns of a gorgeous resort hotel, and exchange their vows in a choice of ceremonies to suit their individual tastes and religious faiths. Weddings in Sri Lanka are completely legal – as long as you are free to marry and have the correct documents there will be no problems. You can have a civil wedding, Christian wedding, Buddhist, Hindu or Muslim wedding. You can even dress in traditional Sri Lankan wedding attire for a Sri Lankan style religious wedding – called the Poruwa Ceremony, complete with ancient rituals, blessings and customs.

medicinal herbs, a coconut and coins to bring blessing and prosperity to the couple. Oil lamps are lit on the corners of the Poruwa, which are believed to give protection and involve a blessing for the couple by the Gods. During a traditional Sri Lankan ceremony you will be escorted to the wedding platform (Poruwa) by a troupe of Kandyan drummers and dancers, then afterwards you will travel on the back of an elephant or bullock cart.

A traditional Poruwa ceremony

As part of the ceremony some of the following rituals may be conducted: The bride and groom will be asked to cast seven sets of betal leaves to the ground, which symbolises happiness, joy and good luck for the next seven generations; The couple’s fingers may be joined together and water is poured over them to depict anointment of the union together; The splitting of a coconut brings a blessing and prosperity to the marriage; Lighting of an oil lamp brings light to a new life.

Add a magical element to your wedding day by opting for a traditional Poruwa ceremony. The ceremony is named after its decorated marriage platform, the Poruwa, which is prepared in accordance with ancient Sinhala rites and customs and is covered with a clean white cloth with placings such as rice,

A traditional Sri Lankan wedding package can be booked through leading tour operators, including Tropical Sky. Most couples marrying in Sri Lanka have a basis of this ceremony either after their religious ceremony, as a blessing or combined into a civil ceremony.

Honeymoons It is easy for couples to combine a fabulous wedding with an amazing honeymoon and what better way to start married life than with a glorious holiday in Sri Lanka? The island has much to offer its visitors, with its rich, diverse culture, breathtaking scenery and tropical climate, with average temperatures of between 25-30 degrees. Honeymooners have so much more on offer than simply sunbathing on the beach (although there will be plenty of opportunities for that!) – the island is absolutely fascinating and exploring it is a must. The best way to see Sri Lanka is to take a 4-5 day tour that includes accommodation and really gives you an opportunity for sightseeing and adventure – from climbing through the jungles to the summit of Adams Peak at sunrise, watching baby elephants getting their milk and bathing in the river at the Pinnawala elephant orphanage to visiting tea plantations by the Ramboda Waterfalls and white water rafting in Kitulgala. PL Tours are offering private tours with your own driver from £460 based on two people. Standard Hotels on Half Board basis + 1 double room and all the entrance tickets. Further Information: www.bridesabroad.tv

The Paperwork There are a number of legal requirements and documentation you need to put into place before your wedding in Sri Lanka. It can be wise to use the services of a professional wedding planner, however good tour operators can arrange wedding packages and take care of all the details on your behalf, including all the documentation and the services of a wedding co-ordinator at your chosen resort. You must send photocopies of all the documents at least three weeks prior to our date of travel. • Residency: You will need to be a resident in Sri Lanka for at least four days before the wedding. • Proof of ID: You will need to produce your original birth certificate and a passport, valid for at least six months from date of entry.

• Proof of status: You must obtain an affidavit signed by a solicitor stating that neither of you has been previously married and that there is no legal obligation to the marriage. • Divorced: You will need your decree if either of you are divorced. • Widowed: You must produce a death certificate of the deceased spouse if either of you are widowed.

• Age restrictions: You can marry without parental consent if you are over 18 years old. If younger you will need parental consent in the form of a sworn affidavit. • Name change: If our name has been changed by Deed Poll, you must provide legal proof stamped and signed by a solicitor. This also applies if you are a divorced woman who has reverted back to her maiden name. www.BridesAbroad.tv 41

The Molloys unite in Sri Lanka

Gail and Patrick’s traditional Sri Lankan wedding 42 www.BridesAbroad.tv

A

ccording to Irish folklore, Gail and Pat Molloy’s union has a special blessing – for the couple, from Ballina, in Co. Mayo, Southern Ireland shared the same surname long before tying the knot in a gorgeous intimate ceremony in Sri Lanka.

Finding ‘the one’ We met eight years ago in a bar in our hometown, Ballina, in Ireland. Pat was with friends and I was not long home after living in the USA. I had lived away in Dublin and California for 14 years and did not have a clue who he was, despite our hometown being quite small. He bought me a drink the first night we met but I’m afraid it wasn’t love at first sight! The next time I saw him out, he sent a drink over to me and my friends and the third time I met him, I agreed to go on a date. Third time lucky!

on surprise. Also, becasue my engagement ring was custom made, we had all the picking and chosing to do ahead of the actual engagement.

Location, location We were going to get married at home in Ireland initially, we even checked out a number of locations. Neither of us wanted a typical wedding and with the unreliability of the Irish weather, we eventually decided to take off to a warm climate and get married abroad. We chose our wedding location by a process of elimination. We wanted to get married in Asia, and we didn’t want to have to go to consulates or embassies on arrival at our destination to get paper work finalised. Sri Lanka ticked our boxes, and from there, it was a simple case of picking the resort that appealed to us both. The travel company assured us we had chosen well.

The proposal He proposed in New York on the morning of my 40th birthday, before we left our hotel. They say life begins at 40, well a very significant chapter of mine began that day. It wasn’t unexpected though, we are not good

The planning We relied on one of the wedding planners, Yvonne, at the travel company we used, Tropical Sky, to have all the arrangements and paperwork organised. When we

arrived at our hotel, The Fortress Resort in Sri Lanka, we had the resident wedding planner, Gayani, take care of the final details. Both ladies were amazing. I have to say, arranging our wedding was one of the easiest events I have ever organised thanks to Tropical Sky. I couldn’t believe it. Actually, stress-free and easy-going is a great way to describe everything about our wedding. When I think of all the planning involved in a home wedding, we are so glad we opted to go abroad to a tropical country and get married the way we did. We had to have all the paperwork organised well in advance of our travels, but aside from that, we simply had to plan for what we were wearing and have the right sun-factor! How easy was that! The photographer, the cake, the registrar, the local marital traditions we took part in were all organised by the wedding planner at the resort.

The guests We didn’t have any guests. We travelled by ourselves. I was a little concerned about this to begin with, but in retrospect, it made the occasion very special, the day was completely and totally ours with only ourselves to think about.

www.BridesAbroad.tv 43

Getting the look I was the anti-bride when it came to the dress! How awful is that? I didn’t want a fussy dress, I was determined to have a plain, straight dress. It was very hard to find a plain, straight wedding dress! So, my dress is actually an ivory bridesmaid dress from Pretty Maids and I loved it. I guess it’s thanks to Pippa Middleton that ivory bridesmaids dresses are widely available and it worked a treat for me! It wasn’t bulky to travel with, and it suited the weather in Sri Lanka very well. I wore a string of pearls and pearl earrings. I also wore a bracelet that my sister gave me for my 40th, which kept her close to me on the big day. I had my make-up done at the spa in the resort. I did my hair myself because I am a bit fussy, but with the strong ocean breeze from the Indian Ocean, it didn’t much matter because my hair had a mind of its own. It made for a few interesting photos. 44 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Something old, something new? I guess I could roll the Something Borrowed and Something Old into one. I had a stunning sequinned and beaded ivory clutch bag that my mother had, but obviously never used because it was in mint condition. She bought it over 40-years-ago when she lived in New York.

The details I had a choice flowers for my bridal bouquet and I chose white orchids, and I also wore white orchids in my hair. As for the cake, we chose a delicious vanilla cake.

The ceremony The ceremony took place in the hotel grounds overlooking the Indian Ocean with the beach right beside us. It was idyllic. It lasted about 45 minutes in total. The local Sri Lankan

traditions took about 30 minutes and it took just about 10 minutes to perform the civil ceremony and signing of the register.

Local customs & traditions In traditional Sri Lankan style, we had the small fingers of our right hands joined with a gold chain and water poured over them while the celebrant chanted. Afterwards, we had to exchange a bunch of Betel leaves with each other, and throw them leaf by leaf in turn. Also, we had to light a traditional lamp filled with coconut oil – but the wind made that part very difficult. Also, after cutting the cake, we had to feed a piece of it to each other. The local customs and rituals made the event very special.

The reception We had a romantic dinner by the pool, on a deck overlooking the ocean with two

RealWEDDINGS

personal waiters catering to our every need. We had no music, just the sounds of waves breaking on the beach. We chose different starters and desserts, but we both had Aurtalian beef tenderloin for the main course. We didn’t have any special table decoration or trimmings or a First Dance! The next morning we had breakfast served to us on the balcony of our room and the next evening, we had wine, antipasta and a helping of our wedding cake, also served to us on our balcony.

Photographic memories The professional photographer was organised by the wedding planner at the resort. The photography flowed with the wedding and there was not so much posing, which suited Pat and I. It seems that Sri Lankans are big into wedding photography, with up to three photographers at local weddings, so they know their stuff. We had to pick the pictures for our album after the photographer had finised so that we could have our album to take home with us. We sat at the hotel bar in our full wedding attire and picked the photos off a lap-top over two gin and tonics! Our favourite photo is the one of us dancing on the beach – we both look really happy in this picture and the setting is like a picture postcard.

Magic moments My best memory is standing beside Pat as I was getting married to him, and the funniest is of Pat pinching my bum as the Sri Lankan priest chanted the traditional part of the ceremony. We would recommend every aspect of our trip, our wedding, the planners and the resort itself. The day after the wedding, I just wished we could do it all over again!

On budget? By the time we added in the extras like the violinist, CD of phtographs etc, and including our expenses while there, I guess it cost in the region of £5,900. We didn’t have a budget, we picked what we wanted and went with that.

The honeymoon We stayed on at the hotel for our blissful honeymoon.

Love and lilies in the

Dominican Republic

Regina and Tomasz say “I do’ amidst tropical flowers

50 www.BridesAbroad.tv

W

hen Latvian born Regina Kondrate came to live in Dublin, Ireland four years ago, she never imagined she would find true love until she met Tomasz Tomczak, who had arrived in Ireland the year previously from his native Poland. They sealed their fairytale romance in a stunning beach setting in the Dominican Republic.

Finding ‘the one’ I was alone at home one evening so rang and asked a friend if I could join him as he was going to a party at a club with a group of friends – including Tomasz. We met on the way. Tomasz introduced himself to me and my first impression was that he was stunning, charming and funny. I was interested in Tomasz right away and I watched him all night. After the party finished we chatted until he went to work and we had a date when he finished work – so he didn’t sleep at all. It started innocently and has grown into big love.

The proposal He always surprises me and this time he booked a trip to Barcelona for three days to celebrate my birthday. When I woke up I discovered a path of colourful rose petals on the floor and I followed them, which led me to a table where there was a chocolate heart and red roses petals, under which I found an engagement ring. I had expected to find my birthday gift, so it was a wonderful surprise for me. He had brought the rose petals all the way from Dublin in his case!

Location, location I am Latvian and my husband is Polish, so we could not have a typical wedding for our families together in Latvia, Poland or even in Ireland as it would be too complicated, so we decided to make something different and original and just for us. We always dreamed of a wedding on the beach with palms and white sand, but in Europe there are not many places like that. We considered Cyprus or Greece before but prices were similar to the Dominican Republic and we went for it. It was well worth the money spent. We searched many different travel agencies to compare prices and we found Tropical Sky’s offer the best. We stayed at Dreams La Romana Hotel in the Dominican Republic. It turned out to be a great choice.

The planning We had a free wedding package included in our booking, which also included the services of wedding coordinator, Jenny Goicoachea, at our resort in the Dominican Republic. Jenny was great. We had many ideas and sent some pictures of decorations to her, but when we arrived we decided with Jenny how everything should look on our Big Day. She prepared our special day even better than we thought; she amazed us and made us very happy. It was difficult for us to get all the documents sorted, but Karen Andrews, our wedding coordinator at Tropical Sky in the UK helped us when we had nearly lost hope that we would be able to assemble all documents. But we did it and are very grateful to her. We booked our wedding and honeymoon around seven www.BridesAbroad.tv 51

months before the big day, we only had to sort out the documents before we went and all other things were sorted in the hotel.

The guests We didn’t have any guests; it was an intimate wedding with just the two of us.

Getting the look I checked many wedding dresses, we even bought one in Poland when we were on holiday, but I found the dress that I always wanted on a website ‘Light in the box”, so we decided to buy it. When it arrived I had to make some alterations to the dress, but just small ones. The dress was very simple but gorgeous and perfect for a wedding on the beach. I bought my necklace the day before the flight and it was a good choice, I didn’t wear any earrings. I don’t like to wear too much shiny bling. My hair and make up was done by a stylist from the hotel’s spa. I brought her a picture of how I would like my hair to look and the day before the wedding we had a trial run.

Something old, something new? We don’t know about this superstition in Latvia or Poland. In our countries there is a 52 www.BridesAbroad.tv

superstition as to the month you get married. It is supposed to have a letter ‘r’ in the name – although ours didn’t!

Groom’s style Tomasz wore linen trousers and shirt as it was very warm and this was the best choice to keep him cool, simple and comfortable.

The details Jenny helped us to chose what kind of flowers and decorations we wanted. We decided on pink lilies, but on the wedding day we got white as they couldn’t get any pink ones – but anyway, they looked great. We had a strawberry wedding cake, but the funny thing was that there were only two of us so the 3kg cake was too much for us – Jenny said that they would make a smaller cake for us and this 3kg cake was the small one!

The ceremony The ceremony took place in the Dreams La Romana Hotel where we stayed. There were three choices of venue within the hotel – a white gazebo in the garden, beach wedding and a gazebo on the sand, which we chose. It was a quiet and romantic location, with no

people around as it was around the side. The ceremony lasted around 15 minutes.

The reception We did not have a reception on the wedding day, we moved it on until the last evening of our honeymoon and we had a specially prepared and romantic dinner on the pier. We were served by our own waiter, called Wilson. He was very friendly and brought us a bottle of Champagne at the beginning. We had a salad starter, then pumpkin soup, grilled chicken and at the end we got our wedding cake.

Photographic memories We didn’t have a wedding video, just photographs as we thought we would have better memories from pictures than video and we were right. Michael Weiler from Caribbean Emotions was our photographer and we are very happy with the job he has done. He drove 60 km from Punta Cana and he was on time, very friendly and professional and took some awesome pictures. I love them all but if I would pick one, I would choose the one when we toast our marriage with glasses of Champagne.

RealWEDDINGS

Magic moments I was amazed how Jenny prepared everything from decorations and flowers to our honeymoon suite after the wedding. It was better than we expected and it was like a fairytale. Even now we look at the pictures and enjoy our memories every day. One of the funniest moments was when the judge asked me if I wanted to marry Tomasz and I did not answer straightaway – there was long silence and then I screamed, “I do”! Everybody laughed. We were worried it was going to rain on our wedding day, as it rained heavily the day before, but we were lucky. Our day was perfect!

On budget? The whole wedding and honeymoon cost around £5,050, which was right on budget. 54 www.BridesAbroad.tv

The honeymoon We stayed on at Dream La Romana Hotel after the wedding and had the best time ever on our honeymoon. It was a wonderful all-inclusive holiday with unlimited leisure. We will never forget it and if we have a chance we will definitely go back there, as we love it so much – it is a very special place for us.

Love sparkles in

Santorini

Helen and Mike wed on a gorgeous Greek island. 62 www.BridesAbroad.tv

I

t was love at first sight at a call centre in Bath when two employees, Helen Quixall from Worsley in Manchester and Mike Young’s eyes first met across a crowded room. Pretty soon they were calling each other, and their love vows were finally exchanged on the spectacular Greek island of Santorini.

Finding ‘the one’ We met four years ago when we used to work at Virgin Media in Bath. Our eyes met across the call centre and within the day we had arranged to go out! As soon as we saw each other the feeling was mutual, so when my boss told me that I was to be transferred back to Manchester so I wouldn’t have to commute to Bath every week, Mike immediately packed up and followed me back to Manchester to start our life there.

The proposal He asked me to marry him at the Ivy restaurant in London. It was my birthday weekend and Mike had arranged for us to go to London. When I got there he had also arranged for all my family to be there waiting when we arrived. We went for a meal and to see a show and then went for drinks at the Ivy – after an hour or so we went up to the terrace and Mike proposed. It wasn’t really unexpected, as I knew that Mike had bought the ring I liked, but he had hidden it at his mums house, as he knew if he left it in the house I would have been trying it on continuously.

The planning We chose to marry overseas, because we wanted ease, beautiful surroundings, predictable weather and a cheaper option than the UK. I spent hours upon hours researching, but as soon as I saw the views and found out more about Santorini I knew there was no other place to get married. We used a wedding planner, Lisa Burton from The Bridal Consultant, which made the wedding so much easier for us. We were given deadlines on what we needed to submit and when, we were given guidance on areas we had never dealt with before, the service was invaluable and it would have been so much more stressful had we done it ourselves, I would thoroughly recommend The Bridal Consultant. We booked all our own accommodation and flights and stayed at a number of hotels around the island. I spent a good few weekends preparing on the lead up to the wedding, shopping for outfits and making sure we had every single item accounted for.

The guests We had 32 wedding guests, who stayed at various hotels around the island, some in Oia, some in Kamari and others in Fira. www.BridesAbroad.tv 63

We originally invited 50 people of which 35 accepted – so not a bad turn out, and as we gave a lot of notice it allowed our guests to save up for the occasion. We originally wanted to get married soon after we were engaged but we decided to wait so that as many people could make it as possible.

Getting the look The wedding dress was by Maggie Sottero bought from Confetti Box. I had been to so many other wedding dress shops and I knew what I wanted, but couldn’t find it anywhere. When I walked into Confetti Box I explained what I had in mind and within minutes they brought out my dream dress. I wanted something classic and with lace. The theme was simple, vintage and lace. My shoes were by Jimmy Choo and the necklace and earrings were bought by Mike to give me as a pre-wedding present. I did my own make up. My bridesmaid Kat is also my hairdresser back home and she did both mine and the bridesmaids hair for the day.

Something old, something new? Something Old – vintage brooch for the flowers; Something New – jewellery from Mike; Something Borrowed – hair piece; Something Blue – My garter and also “I do” stickers for underneath my shoes.

Groom & bridesmaids Mike wore a suit by Ted Baker. The bridesmaid’s dresses were from Coast and the flower girls dresses were from Monsoon.

The details We had a vintage and lace theme although I was not too particular on this being carried through the entire wedding -– there were just touches throughout. For my bouquet I chose classic roses, cream, pink and fuchsia, wrapped in lace and decorated with a beautiful brooch. For the cake, we had a classic sponge covered in plain white icing.

Photographic memories Vangelis was our photographer and he was amazing -– the shots he produced, the clarity of his work and his eye for the best lighting was phenomenal, we both highly recommend him for anyone getting married in Santorini. Our favourite photo is the one taken at sunset on the roof of our hotel, it epitomises the end to a wonderful day and the setting is beautiful, the lighting perfect and we couldn’t have been happier!

The ceremony The 40-minute ceremony took place at the Santorini Princess Hotel. My dad gave me away. 64 www.BridesAbroad.tv

www.BridesAbroad.tv 65

RealWEDDINGS

The reception Afterwards, the reception was also held at the Santorini Princess Hotel. We had the Santorini Princess Salad, Melon with Proschiutto, Beef Fillet and then Chocolate Souffle for dessert. We took a few ornaments and table decorations but we did not go overboard with the level of detail. For our First Dance we chose a song called By Your Side by Sade. We had live musicians after our ceremony and then my good friend, who is a DJ, had pre-mixed all the evening music so we could all dance the night away.

Magic moments The moment we saw each other on the wedding day it was very emotional but magical at the same time. The funniest bit was the Best Man’s speech – it had everyone in stitches. There were no disasters. It was the perfect wedding!

On budget? The whole thing cost us £12,000, including the wedding, the honeymoon, rings, travel 66 www.BridesAbroad.tv

and accommodation. We originally thought we would be able to do it all for around £10,000 but we had room to manoeuvre, so we didn’t rigidly stick to our planned budgets for every item.

The honeymoon We went to Mauritius for our honeymoon, after spending 10 days with friends and family in Santorini. We also wanted to go and spend some time just by ourselves as a married couple and the isolation and relaxed feel of Mauritius allowed us to do just that.

Sunset vows in

Santorini

Raquel and Paulo’s wedding with magnificent vistas 68 www.BridesAbroad.tv

P

eople come from far and wide to marry on the gorgeous Greek island of Santorini. For Brazilian business manager Raquel Rollemberg and her fiancé, Judge Paulo Roberto, the long journey from their home in Brazil to Europe was well worth it to embrace Santorini’s breathtaking views across the Aegean Sea and magnificent sunsets on their wedding day.

Finding ‘the one’ We actually met at a concert and it was definitely love at first sight. We met and we started dating on the same day!

The proposal Everything was very fast with both our meeting and the wedding proposal. I got pregnant soon after we started dating and

so he asked me to marry him. We did not want to wait so decided on it very quickly!

Location, location When I first came to Greece on holiday it was love at first sight. I started to study more about the country – its history, cultural heritage, mythology and found it all very fascinating. But most important of all are the sunsets in Santorini – they are absolutely stunning, and this was our deciding factor!

The planning When we decided to get married in Greece, I didn’t know where to begin. It was all new to me. First I chose the hotel where we wanted to have our wedding. I contacted the hotel and was advised to use the services of an expert wedding planner, and Stella and Moscha came highly recommended.

I saw their work and I was charmed. We could not have made a better choice; our wedding was better than we expected and dreamed. We did all the travel arrangements on our own and started planning everything six months before our big day.

And the guests? We just had four guests who stayed in the Kirini Suites. We knew it would be difficult to invite more guests because Santorini isn’t very close to Brazil!

Getting the look I wanted to wear something simple, white and Grecian – fit for the islands and the sunset in Santorini. My dress is from a Brazilian designer Carlos Miele. When I entered the store and saw it I knew I had found my dress! I wore earrings with www.BridesAbroad.tv 69

blue stone and gold trim, which I thought, combined well with the scenery. Our wedding planners, Stella and Moscha, arranged a hair & make up artist to come to my hotel and style my hair before the wedding.

Groomed to perfection Paulo wore beige pants and blazer.

The details We themed our wedding “Island Wedding” with vintage chic and plenty of blue details to depict the sea. I told Stella and Moscha that I want flowers with blue and white and they came up with a wonderful bouquet with hydrangeas and calla lilies. Our

70 www.BridesAbroad.tv

wedding cake was a white fresh cream cake decorated with blue hydrangeas.

The ceremony Our wedding took place on the terrace of Kirini Suites hotel, where we had the advantage of amazing views. We were married by the celebrant from the Town Hall of Santorini in a ceremony that lasted 15 minutes. Nobody ‘gave me away’ – I wanted to walk down the aisle on my own.

Local customs and traditions We had local musicians playing violin and guitar – they escorted me to the ceremony Altar as per local custom for announcing the bride’s arrival. We also had some beautiful all

white sugar and almond paste mini pastries that are made specifically for weddings on the island of Santorini.

The reception We enjoyed a romantic candle-lit dinner with our guests at Kirini Suites Hotel. We ordered A la Carte from the menu – the hotel offers a wonderful fusion Greek menu. Stella and Moscha prepared a beautiful table for our dinner with candles, chandeliers and flowers.

Photographic memories Our wedding photographer was Adonis Eleftherakis. Our favourite photo is the picture of our kiss – it was the moment we sealed our love against the backdrop of the Aegean; indescribable!

Magic moments Everything was magical from the moment we arrived in Santorini – everything was so special! My guests were wonderful too; we had fun all the time.

The honeymoon We stayed on at the same hotel with our guests for our honeymoon. We loved the fact that we were all together.

When is the best time to go? If you are planning a wedding or honeymoon in St Lucia, the island enjoys a hot, tropical climate throughout the year, moderated by north-east trade winds, and an average high annual temperature of 26°C and low of 24°C. Due to its location close to the equator, St Lucia doesn’t have well-defined seasons. However, the wet season falls between June and November so be prepared for heavy but periodic showers. Honeymooners shouldn’t be put off visiting during the wet season as while showers are sudden, heavy and frequent, blue skies are quick to follow and you will see plenty of gorgeous weather between downpours with an average of eight hours sunshine per day. The dry season runs from January to May and is the country’s most popular time of year for wedding couples and honeymooners. During this season the weather is idyllic, with pleasant heat, blue skies and sunshine.
