AND CONGRATULATIONS!

So, you’re engaged and ready to embark on an exciting journey as man and wife! Excellent! But while some of your friends will wish you all the luck and happiness in the world, others will say: “What’s the point – is all the hassle and expense worth it?” Of course, we know the answer – a resounding “YES!” It’s the biggest day of your lives so we say, “GO FOR IT – and push the boat out!” OK, so the world’s your oyster and the choice is yours to marry at home and have a honeymoon abroad, or treat yourselves to the day you’ve always dreamed of by travelling to the sun to say: “I do.”

Our role at Brides Abroad is to inspire you. But before you think you can’t afford a destination wedding, think again – it can be considerably cheaper than you think and even if money is no object, you will get amazing value overseas. The problem is where to go?

Lisa Burton Holly Catz Lily Gish Martin Cody-Owen

Before you start thinking long-haul, why not consider Portugal’s sun-drenched Algarve coastline? It’s got sun, sea and sand and it’s easily accessible for friends and family. What’s not to like? (p.24)

Photography

Or, if you do decide to go further afield, and your dream is a sand-between-your toes beach ceremony beneath swaying palm trees, then head to the totally tropical Caribbean (p.34). Perhaps you’re thinking: “Let’s go crazy!” And where better than in the city that never sleeps? Las Vegas! (p.50). But if you fancy somewhere even more exotic, how about the trip of a lifetime to Thailand in southeast Asia (p.58). And if you really want that Robinson Crusoe island experience, it has to be the Maldives (p.70).

But if you still cannot make up your mind, look at our Wow Weddings! (p.76). Any questions? Ask our Wedding Planner for useful tips and advice (p.92). If you have chosen to have your big day at home in the UK, then give some thought to the best holiday of your lives. We take an in-depth look at favourite honeymoon regions –Tenerife in the Canary Islands (p.98) and magnificent Mexico, Yee hah! (p.102). If your priority is a fabulous stretch of golden beach then check out the Best Beaches (p.108). Like so many couples with busy lives you may be pushed for time after your wedding so stay closer to home with a ‘Mini-moon’. We look at four fab City Breaks (p.114). Or if you like to mix culture, ancient history and beautiful beaches, then put Egypt high on your list (p.118). Check out our great deals for your destination wedding or honeymoon (p.74), or ring Brides Abroad Travel Desk on 0800 211 8255 – we always have some surprises up our sleeves for you! recommend you to use the services of a dedicated wedding planner who can assist with ideas, venues, suppliers and all the necessary documentation.

Blue skies, white villages and golden sandy beaches framed by jagged limestone cliffs await visitors to the Algarve, making it idyllic for destination weddings and honeymoons. From pretty sheltered coves to wide stretches of pristine sand, pretty towns and villages and world-class golf courses, the Algarve has it all! However this region of Portugal has so much more to offer than simply sun, sea and sand. Situated at the southern tip of Portugal, the 200-kilometre Algarve coastline blends a rich mixture of year-round warm sunshine, beautiful scenery, history, culture, lush golf courses, and an extensive choice of luxury hotels and villas that are ideal venues to host your 'big day' or honeymoon – or both. For golfers, there couldn't be a better destination to marry or honeymoon. The Algarve boasts over 30 challenging golf courses, in fact some of the luxury golf resort hotels in the Algarve cater for destination weddings, which is especially ideal for golf-loving couples and guests. There's also an abundance of watersports available, plus tennis and cycling along coastal paths. The lesser-known wild, western Algarve embraces the power of the Atlantic – it's ideal for surfers as well as spotting dolphins, bird watching and nature trails. The Algarve's whitewashed villages, with their enchanting narrow streets and winding alleys, beg to be explored. Shop for locally hand-crafted souvenirs and sample the regions delicious wines and cuisine, prepared with fresh local ingredients. The pretty town churches make a beautiful alternative to the beach for a more traditional wedding As night falls you can stroll along the marinas and sample the Algarve's lively nightlife in bars, discos and casinos. Whichever part of the Algarve you choose, it will most definitely have all the ingredients for an unforgettable wedding or honeymoon – from the warm welcome you will receive and stunning scenery to excellent local wines – at superb prices – and delicious food.

Civil ceremony

Legals

For your Civil ceremony you will need:

Identification documents Birth certificates A Certificate of No Impediment Additionally you may need divorce certificates or death certificates of former partners or previous marriage certificates. ! All documents must be translated into Portuguese and notarized locally, and you will need a translator for the civil ceremony. ! ! ! !

For Catholic ceremonies you will also need:

! Documentation from your parish priest granting permission for the ceremony ! Documentation for the Bishop of your parish ! Documentation regarding baptism, first communion and confirmation

The simplest way to marry in the Algarve is for couples to have a civil wedding at their local UK Registry Office, followed by a blessing or religious wedding in the Algarve. Couples no longer need to have a 30-day residency requirement, making it easier for non-residents to have a legally binding civil ceremony in Portugal. Civil weddings can take place at many venues, from a Registry Office to a beach ceremony.

Catholic ceremony

Catholic wedding ceremonies are always celebrated in churches rather than hotel and beach venues, and because Portugal is a very religious country it has an abundance of beautiful churches – from small and simple to grand and richly decorated in religious iconography. There are also plenty of English-speaking priests in the Algarve.

Church of England ceremony

If you want a C of E ceremony in Portugal, there are several English-speaking vicars in the Algarve who are able to perform ceremonies in the Catholic churches, with prior permission from the Catholic priest. They can personalize the ceremony to your requirements and are also able to perform weddings at other selected locations.

Blessings

Marry in the Algarve

Whether on a sandy beach, a cliff top, a hotel garden, golf resort, local church or private marquee or villa, you can choose from a host of gorgeous venues to tie the knot in the Algarve to suit your individual taste, style and budget. Select the style of ceremony of your dreams – from a legally binding civil wedding ceremony to a bespoke blessing performed by a Celebrant or a religious Catholic or Protestant ceremony. If you are marrying at one of the hotels, there are usually wedding co-ordinators on hand to help you every step of the way. However, we

Like a civil wedding, a blessing ceremony can take place at any location in the Algarve. This ceremony is ideal for couples wanting to renew their vows. However, a blessing ceremony does not form a legal marriage contract and is purely symbolic, so if you want to become legally married you will also need a civil ceremony at your local Registry Office in the UK.

GARDEN PARTY IN

PORTUGAL During nine years as a couple, Anna Ellis, a solicitor from the Wirral and her partner Andrew Foster, an investment consultant, had travelled the world together. However, after he finally popped the question during a holiday in Las Vegas, the couple chose a location closer to home for their big day. Andrew proposed on my birthday in 2013. We had both taken sabbaticals from our jobs and were on a roundthe-world trip. He proposed whilst having a meal at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas – the setting was a replica of St Mark's Square in Venice with gondolas going past, and Andrew popped the question! We then chose an engagement ring together when we got back to the UK. We had been going out for nearly nine years at this point, and I had dropped many hints, so it wasn't a complete shock when he proposed!

Location, location

We both didn't want a huge white wedding in the UK; we preferred to have something more intimate and informal. We have always loved Portugal as a country, having visited on many occasions. We also felt that Portugal wasn't too far away for

26 www.BridesAbroad.tv

guests to travel. There was also the guarantee of good weather! I did some online research to look at possible venues and wedding planners. We planned to go on holiday to Portugal in any event and met up with the wedding planner whilst we were out there, who offered to show us some venues. We fell in love with the Sheraton Algarve Hotel straight away and didn't go and see any other venues, as we knew that was the one for us! The Sheraton had stunning scenery, great location and other local hotels in the area so guests had a choice of accommodation.

The planning

We engaged the services of Algarve Wedding Planners who were great, answering emails promptly and providing advice. They sorted everything from the legal paperwork to organising hair, makeup, flowers etc. We didn't use a company to sort the travel arrangements, as most budget airlines fly to Portugal frequently. The wedding planners offered to arrange accommodation if needed and provided a link for guests to a web page which they could access if they

Anna and Andrew's elegant family wedding in the Algarve www.BridesAbroad.tv 27

REAL WEDDINGS wanted to use this service. In terms of planning, everything was organised before we went, I had a trial make-up and hair session beforehand when we went over in April just to finalise some things and take some items over – we didn't really need to, but it was helpful.

The guests

We had about 50 guests. Some guests travelled from as far as Australia, Canada and Bangkok They stayed in various locations, some in our actual hotel, others in local hotels and in Vilamoura or Albufeira. Most guests stayed for the week as they combined it with their own holiday. After we set the date we sent out a save the date card and then formal invitations. Some friends and family members didn't accept due to it being overseas, but most attended.

Getting the look

The dress was by designer Mori Lee. It was Venetian lace. It was one of the first dresses I saw and tried on and I knew that it was the dress! It had a lovely sparkly belt, which set it off perfectly. I had a vintage style side hair band from the same shop. As the dress was quite high necked, I didn't need a necklace but wore a Tiffany bracelet Andrew had bought me. I had my hair and make-up styled professionally. During the trial I showed the hairdresser how I wanted it doing, she did it even better on the day and my make up was fantastic too!

Something old, something new

My dress was New, the Old was my bracelet and Borrowed and Blue was the garter I borrowed from my sister.

Groom and bridesmaids

The Groom and his Best Man wore pale grey suits and waistcoats with pale grey/ silver ties. The bridesmaids wore dresses from Coast, which were gunmetal/silver colour, also with sparkly belts, which complimented my dress. My sister, who was Maid of Honour, had a longer version of the dress. The bridesmaids had a simple flower headband, also from Coast and bracelets to match.

28 www.BridesAbroad.tv

REAL WEDDINGS The details

We didn't have a themed wedding – we are both not 'fussy' people and wanted it to be simple and elegant. The colour theme was silver/grey. Andrew is a big Queen fan so the tables were named after Queen songs. My bouquet was Ivory roses and the bridesmaids had a smaller version of my bouquet. The flowers on the tables were also roses. The cake was a 3-tier cake in Ivory with flowers on it.

Wedding ceremony

The service was a civil ceremony and took place in the Tabu Garden at the Sheraton, with amazing views of the sea and cliffs. The ceremony lasted about 30 minutes. It was conducted in Portuguese and translated, which actually made it more authentic. There were no particular customs or rituals in the ceremony. We also had my aunt and friend doing readings. A registrar from Loule married us and my dad gave me away. We had a string quartet playing, which was fantastic and I walked down the aisle to Pachelbel in Canon d. Afterwards the quartet played modern versions of songs at the drinks reception.

The reception

After the drinks reception we moved to the next location within the Sheraton, which was the sunset deck, this was a decked area overlooking the cliffs and sea. We had chosen a BBQ style menu with meat, fish, and salads followed by desserts. The wine was flowing! The BBQ

again made it feel more laid back and informal. On the table we had flowers as the centrepiece. Instead of favours we made a donation to the Alzheimer's Society as both our grandmothers suffered with dementia. The Alzheimer's Society gave us some pins, which we put, in a metal bucket for guests to help themselves to and to let them know what we had done. We also had a vintage style birdcage for guests to put cards in. Also on the table were some packs of table trivia for guests to get to know one another better! Name places were old style luggage labels handwritten in silver pen with a diamanté on; they were tied to the glass stems, as it gets quite windy in Portugal. We also had silver ties on the chairs. Our first dance was to Paloma Faith's version of Never Tear Us Apart. For the evening we had hired out the beach bar and we had a band called Neverland. Andrew plays the guitar and played with the band for four songs, which was great as our guests didn't realise how good he was! The party lasted until around 1am.

Photographic memories

Joao Ataíde was our photographer – he was there for the whole day, from getting ready to almost the end of the night. He took over 1,000 photos and we had to choose just 100, which was a very hard job to do! My favourite photos are the ones of us taken on the beach.

Magic moments

The whole day was amazing and we would both love to do it all over again as it went so quickly. I really enjoyed Andrew playing the guitar and the whole wedding

30 www.BridesAbroad.tv

party were up dancing. There were no disasters, only that no one signed our guest book – which we put down to them having such a good time!

The honeymoon

We stayed in Portugal for four days after the wedding. It actually wasn't the same after guests had left. We then had our honeymoon a few months later, so it would give us something else to look forward to. We took three weeks off work and went to Chicago, San Francisco, drove down the coast to LA, Hawaii, Las Vegas (where he popped the question) and then Florida.

On budget?

We didn't keep a strict budget and still haven't officially worked it all out, but I would estimate approximately £20,000. We didn't want to scrimp on things and wanted it to be a day to remember, not only for us but our guests too.

ANTIGUA A Caribbean beach paradise

Saying: "I do" in Antigua is a magical experience, thanks to its stunning backdrops of turquoise blue ocean and lush tropical landscapes blended with distinctive Colonial charm 34 www.BridesAbroad.tv

– from a secluded beach to a private villa or a luxury yacht. However, most couples choose to marry in the lush grounds of their hotel, under flower-strewn gazebos or in barefoot weddings down on the beaches.

Antigua is best known for its romantic hideaways and private beaches that are perfect for idyllic weddings and honeymoons. However, unlike some islands in the Caribbean, it is easily accessible with direct flights from UK airports. Situated in the middle of the Leeward Islands, Antigua is much more than just sun, azure waters and an astounding 355 beaches, with sands of different shades and hues – from golden to dazzling white or romantic pink. The island, twinned with its less developed sister island, Barbuda, boasts colonial-era historical sites, a range of leisure activities and plenty of culture to keep you interested and entertained during your stay. Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts beautiful restored original buildings and forts and the capital, St John's is perfect for harbour-front shopping in the chic Radcliffe Quay. For the best island views head up to Shirley Heights overlooking the famous English and Falmouth Harbours – on a clear day you can see the islands of Guadeloupe and Montserrat in the distance. And be sure to take time to swim with stingrays, zip through the rainforest and try your hand at watersports.

Marry in Antigua

Thanks to the island's worthy reputation as a lover's paradise, almost all hotels in Antigua offer wedding and honeymoon packages and many have their own dedicated wedding team to take care of all the arrangements. Some hotels even offer free weddings! There's a huge choice of wedding venues available in Antigua and Barbuda, in fact you can get married anywhere you want to

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO

1 2 3 4 5

Look out for nesting sea turtles at Galley Bay Beach, laze on the white sands or swim in the turquoise ocean. Step back in time and visit Betty's Hope in Pared Village, once Antigua's biggest sugar plantation when it was a British colony. Climb up to Shirley Heights, 492 ft above sea level to view a magnificent sunset. Once a military look out point, you can now treat yourself to a drink at Shirley Heights Bar & Restaurant. Visit Devil's Bridge national park in eastern Antigua, a place where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic, and see the gigantic limestone arch 'bridge'. Go shopping in the mall at Heritage Quay, popular with cruise ships, and listen to steel drum musicians performing.

If you prefer traditional nuptials with a Caribbean twist, Antigua can cater for religious ceremonies – some of the Anglican churches in Antigua are just like the ones you would find in a typically English village. To marry in a church of your choice you will need permission from the church authorities. Some churches ask that the couple attend pre-nuptial consultations, so allow extra time if you are planning a church ceremony.

The legals

Your wedding co-ordinator or tour operator will help to ensure that you have the right documentation and paperwork so that your marriage is legally recognized back home. You will need: ! Valid passports for both parties ! Divorce decree if divorced ! Original marriage and death certificates if widowed ! Both parties to be 16 or over, if under 18, written parental consent is required. ! Original documents, not copies. ! Two or more witnesses

Marriage fees

You also need to pay a registration fee of US$40 (approx. £25) to the courthouse in the new government buildings in St John’s. Plus an application fee for a special marriage license of US$150 (approx. £97.50) and the Marriage Officer's fee of US$50 (approx. £26).

REAL WEDDINGS

Barefoot at

Sandals When they married at ‘Sandals' resort on the Caribbean island of Antigua, Karen Hardy chose to wear no shoes at all when she said “I do” to Matthew Thompson at their romantic barefoot beach ceremony

Finding the one

We actually met on a dating website – however it took two years for us to finally meet up!

The proposal

Matt popped the question in Dublin, but I have to admit, it wasn't the most charming setting for a marriage proposal – he asked me to marry him as we crossed a busy road! I said "No" as he didn't propose romantically, and made him ask me again! It was all very unexpected though!

Location, location

We wanted our wedding to be as intimate as possible. Originally we wanted to swim with turtles in Barbados, but had to change to Antigua due to renovations. But we are so glad we did, as it was an absolutely amazing venue.

The planning

We made our own bookings online through the Sandals website. We planned around 99 per cent of our wedding before we left the UK. The Sandals UK Wedding team are excellent. They have been so supportive and helpful with the whole process, from planning

36 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Karen and Matt say, "I do" on a sandy Antiguan beach

www.BridesAbroad.tv 37

REAL WEDDINGS the wedding to offering us after-support once we arrived back home. The team is very friendly and is always happy to help. They have been a complete pleasure to deal with. We didn't invite any wedding guests, so it was just the two of us.

Getting the look

We decided on a natural theme. My dress reflected that with small daisies scattered all over it. I also decided to go without shoes for a real barefoot ceremony! However I did wear foot jewellery, which I had custom made for me. My hair was done at the hotel, but I knew exactly how I wanted it to look and took pictures. Matt wore a pink shirt and grey trousers.

Something old, something new

Something Old was a sixpence piece which I carried with me; New were my earrings; Borrowed, a bag; Blue was a garter.

The details

Pink and natural was our theme, and with this in mind I had pink roses in my bouquet with butterflies and wore the same butterflies in my hair. Still on the butterfly theme, we had a pink two-tier wedding cake, which was also decorated with butterflies.

38 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Photographic memories

Sandals arranged for our photographer, Delmore, who was lovely. We are delighted with the wedding photographs – we can't decide which ones are our favourite as there are so many to choose from!

Magic moments

One of our favourite moments was having our photographs taken with the hotel's Macaw parrot, and one funny, though potentially disastrous moment was when Matt misunderstood the photographer when he asked us to dip – he thought it meant dipping me in the water! Fortunately he didn't but it was a close call!

On budget?

The ceremony

Our wedding ceremony was held under a pagoda just off the beach, which was decorated with beautiful flowers. The pagoda ceremony lasted around 20 minutes, followed by a sand ceremony that lasted another 10 minutes. We were married by Celo Percival, an Antiguan registrar to music by Christina Perry – A Thousand Years. The sand ceremony is traditional in Antiguan weddings and was a romantic part of the nuptials.

The reception

Our wedding reception was just a meal for the two of us. We had cold hors d'oeuves and Champagne under the pagoda followed by a BBQ on the beach.

The whole WeddingMoon, including our wedding ceremony and honeymoon at Sandals resort in Antigua, cost us £6,500 in total. That was a little over budget as we had extras during our stay, but it was well worth it!

St Lucia The Caribbean love island

Say "I do" in St Lucia, the Caribbean's most popular wedding island, with the famous Pitons as an iconic backdrop on your special day 42 www.BridesAbroad.tv

and other watersports; whale watching; coastal kayaking; golf and horse-riding.

It's no surprise that St Lucia is the number one Caribbean wedding and honeymoon destination – this exotic Caribbean island has got it all! It's a tropical paradise for your wedding celebrations and a gorgeous island for honeymooners to explore at their own leisurely pace. With its lush mountains, rainforests, rich vegetation and banana plantations, St Lucia is a photographer's dream. However, the landmark that dominates the shores of St Lucia, giving the island its distinctive identity is the Pitons – jagged twin peaks soaring more than 2,000 ft above the island's southwest coast. If you are feeling energetic you can walk to the top of the peaks, or if you prefer, simply admire their beauty from afar. St Lucia even boasts the world's only walk-in volcano, which last erupted more than 200 years ago. If you dream of a beach wedding, St Lucia offers long stretches of unspoiled sandy beaches and secluded coves, from the popular Reduit Beach and the white sands of Rodney Bay to the black volcanic sands of Anse Chastenet. Most resorts in St Lucia nestle along the beaches on the southwest (Caribbean) side of the island. The less populated Atlantic east coast is dotted with nature reserves. Pigeon Island, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway at Rodney Bay, is a 40-acre natural park with the remains of an 18th century British fort. Another favourite is the picturesque marina at Marigot Bay, famed as the film location for Dr Doolittle in the 1960s, and now better known for its array of sailing yachts and luxurious Gin Palaces moored here for the night.

Honeymoon heaven

For couples that don't want to spend the entire honeymoon lounging on the beach, there are plenty of activities available on the island – jungle biking; rainforest hikes and sky rides; sailing; diving; snorkelling

Marry in St Lucia

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO

1 2 3 4 5

Visit the heart of the volcano: It is in the crater of the Soufriere volcano, with hot rocks, steam and boiling pools of murky water. Every full moon, the pools turn into geysers – apparently something to do with the tides. Explore the rainforests: There are plenty of hiking trails through St Lucia's green and mountainous interior, so hire a guide and explore! For the ultimate adrenaline buzz you can wiz above the rainforest on Zip Line Wires at the Treetop Adventure Park in Dennery. Climb the Pitons: The Gros Piton is the easier of the two famous Pitons to climb. The hike up the Piton with a guide takes an average of two hours to the summit, and is strenuous but not too difficult and worth it for the spectacular views of St Lucia. Take a Kayaking tour: Guided kayaking tours embrace St Lucia's beautiful natural coastline and crystal clear waters. You will be offered expert instruction. Tours from the luxury retreat Anse Chastanet can include a picnic lunch and a swim off a deserted beach. Have a spa treatment: The luxury resorts in St Lucia boast stunning spas, including The Body Holiday, a beautiful resort devoted to health and wellbeing, which offers both western and Ayurvedic treatments.

Not only does the island's natural beauty provide the perfect backdrop for your wedding, but most hotels in St Lucia offer wedding packages aimed at making your special day romantic and hassle free. What's more, there are plenty of deals on offer for wedding couples at the island's hotels and resorts including: free night's accommodation, free meals, free upgrades and even free wedding ceremonies. Weddings at St Lucia's luxury resorts are offered in a variety of exotic locations, such as garden gazebos overlooking the surf and romantic spots down on the beach. Religious weddings can be arranged in a church by the hotel’s wedding planners. You can even tie the knot at some of the island's most amazing locations – in the midst of the rainforest, a quaint island church or even a wedding involving an adventure activity such as diving or horse riding. Some of the more unusual ways to plunge into matrimony are along a summit ridge of Gros Piton, diving among the colourful fish on the coral reef or sailing into the sunset on a catamaran. They are all possibilities…

Legals

You need to be over 18-years old and must be in St Lucia for three full business days prior to the wedding day for the license application process to be completed. You will also need the following documentation: Passport and/or birth certificate; an original or certified copy of a divorce decree; in the case of a widow/widower, a certified death certificate. www.BridesAbroad.tv 43

REAL WEDDINGS

A Caribbean

RENDEZVOUS With family and friends scattered around the world, international couple Kelly Bagshaw and Markus Soderlund, who are currently living in Finland, had the world to choose from when they decided to marry abroad – but rather than saying “I do” in Finland or the UK they opted to tie the knot on a sunkissed Caribbean beach

Finding ‘the one’

We met through www.match.com. Markus, who is from Finland, says he thought I was very beautiful on our first date but believes love at first sight doesn’t exist – love is something else that takes more time. We met in April and by June we were inseperable.

The proposal

Markus proposed to me on a romantic

44 www.BridesAbroad.tv

weekend away in Tallinn, Estonia. After a delicious meal we returned to the Swiss Hotel were he proposed, classic style, on one knee. He had been dropping lots of hints, but at the moment he proposed it was totally unexpected!

Location location

We thought about a wedding in Helsinki, then in the UK, but we realsied that there would always be some members of our family who were unable to be

Kelly and Markus exchange vows in a St Lucian beach ceremony www.BridesAbroad.tv 45

REAL WEDDINGS there. The cost was also a factor – we wanted to be able to save and pay for our wedding and honeymoon ourselves without getting into debt. We wanted to get married within 12 months of getting engaged, so combining the wedding and honeymoon made it a third of the cost. We wanted a small, boutique, adults only hotel and through searching and reading reveiws on line we chose Rendezvous in St Lucia where we stayed in a pretty beachfront cottage.

The planning

We booked our wedding through Tropical Sky, and their Wedding Team organised almost everything. We had a wedding planner at the resort too with whom we were in contact prior to our arrival. Tropical Sky were amazing. The attention to detail was impressive. They answered all (my numerous!) questions very quickly.

The guests

We had an intimate wedding, with just the two of us. No guests.

Getting the look

My wedding dress was designed by Anoushka G, bought from a bridal boutique in Leicester. We wanted to feel as comfortable and as cool as possible in the tropical climate. Beauty and elegance were also important! My eight-year-old son gave me a silver heart necklace to wear. I also wore a silver braclet given to me by Markus on our first anniversary. I had planned to wear my hair down but it was too hot. I took a vintage roll set bought from Claire’s Accessories just incase, and it worked! Many people have asked who did my hair and were surprised to find I did it myself. For my flowers I chose white orchids.

Well groomed

Markus wore a white tailor-made shirt and taupe coloued trousers. We didn’t have any bridesmaids.

The ceremony

Our wedding ceremony was held in a beachfront gazebo at the hotel in a pictureperfect setting. It was a civil ceremony that lasted around 30-40 minutes. We were married by marriage officer Michael Gospard, who made it very special with many lovely connections to St Lucia during the ceremony.

46 www.BridesAbroad.tv

The reception

On the evening of our wedding we enjoyed a candlelit dinner for two at the a la carte restaurant at the Rendezvous resort, the Trysting Place. We saved our main reception for our loved ones back in the UK and Finland. First we had a lunch for our British family and friends at the Grey Lady restaurant, which is opposite Bradgate Park in Leicestershire – my favourite place since childhood. Then we invited close friends to a sparkling wine and cake celebration on the terrace overlooking the harbour at the Blue Peter restaurant in Helsinki. After that, Markus’s grandparents (who are 90years-old) asked if they could organise a Karalien-style wedding reception for our Finnish family, where we will dance the same First Dance as they did 66 years ago – Metsakukkia (forest flowers) Wedding Waltz, which was also danced by Markus’s sister at her wedding.

Photographic memories

We chose a small selection of photos taken by Photograpy Train. We particularly like the photo taken just after the ceremony had finished when we looked backwards at the camera – we are both laughing and it looks like such a happy and natural moment.

Magic moments

The whole week was the best week of our lives. One of the funniest moments was when Markus didn’t understand one of the words we were exchanging during our vows and made it up – I got the giggles! The only potential problem was that there was a thunderstorm at exactly 3pm! We had to wait half an hour for it to pass, but it all worked out beautifully in the end.

On budget?

The trip cost £3,000. Plus the dress and rings and extras. Probably £5,000 in total. We didn’t have to borrow any money, so it was within our budget.

Adding to the allure of Las Vegas as a popular wedding destination is the fact that blood tests and waiting periods are non-existent in Nevada and the Marriage License Bureau on South Third Street is open until midnight 7 days a week. And many of the popular Vegas wedding venues will be happy to provide witnesses for you at very short notice. Many Vegas chapels offer you the choice of a civil or a religious ceremony. The only stipulation is that if either of you have been married before, you'll be required to provide proof of its dissolution by divorce, death or annulment. It's worth remembering that if you marry during the hot summer months it may be best to have an indoor celebration or exchange vows beneath the evening sky, as it can get extremely hot between May and September. Thanks to the marvels of technology and the Internet, your wedding can now be simulcast to the Internet screens of your friends and family back home who have been unable to join you in Las Vegas – so nobody wil miss out on a single moment of your wedding ceremony.

Book it!

A number of UK Wedding Planners and Tour Operators, including Tropical Sky (www.tropicalsky.co.uk) can arrange your wedding in Las Vegas at most of the venues mentioned above, including hotel and flights. As a price guide, Wedding Packages are available from between £350 to £2,250.

REAL WEDDINGS

SIMPLY LAS VEGAS When Fiona Lewis, a primary school teacher from Halifax in Yorkshire married sales manager Graham Pether, they decided against a traditional grand wedding, and instead headed to Las Vegas for a fun, no-frills ceremony in Graceland Wedding Chapel where celebrities, including Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Ray Cyrus have also tied the knot

Finding 'the one’

We met online. We talked online for nearly a year before actually meeting in person and so had become really good friends before we met.

The proposal

Graham proposed in the Lake District. He took me there for the weekend to a beautiful boutique hotel. He used rose petals to spell out "Will you marry me?" – they were on the bed when we arrived in our room! Not a total surprise though as we had talked about marriage and so I kind of expected something special to happen that weekend!

52 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Location location

We had decided to get married only a few months before the wedding and we wanted our wedding day to be about us. We realised that, with Graham living in

Yorkshire and his family being in Colchester, it would be hard to get everyone together. So we decided to keep it simple and have the trip of a lifetime at the same time. We thought the idea of marrying in Vegas sounded fun and easy!

The planning

I contacted Tropical Sky Weddings and they gave me lots of different options to choose from. Kaz from Tropical Sky was so helpful and I was literally emailing her for weeks before we booked. She gave us lots of different ideas that would suit what we wanted. The wedding was very easy to plan – we literally chose the colour of our flowers and that was it!

The guests

It was just the two of us, no guests.

Getting the look

I wore a simple 50's style short wedding dress by LouLou and my only jewellery was a pearl necklace. I did my own hair and make up.

Well groomed

Graham wore a tailored teal blue suit with brown Ted Baker brogues. I didn't have any bridesmaids.

The ceremony

Our wedding ceremony took place at the famous Graceland Wedding Chapel on the Las Vegas Strip. It was just a 15 minute ceremony – short and simple, just the way we wanted it! We were married by the local pastor. We didn't want any frills or fuss.

The reception

We didn't have a wedding reception, just a romantic meal for the two of us. We ate at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at the Paris Hotel overlooking the Bellagio fountains. We enjoyed gorgeous food and drank Champagne and after the meal we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower to watch the Bellagio fountains perform their unique ‘dance’. It was a very special moment.

Magic moments

The most wonderful thing about our wedding was just spending the whole day on my own with my new husband with no fuss, just the two of us.

The honeymoon

We travelled to Mexico for our honeymoon and stayed at Secrets Maroma Beach in the Riveira Maya.

THAI THE KNOT

Say “I do” in some of the world’s most spectacular beach settings and have a sublime honeymoon in exotic Thailand 58 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Beautiful, vibrant Thailand is rapidly becoming one of the world’s number one destinations for overseas weddings, as well as honeymoons in paradise. Thailand boasts friendly, hospitable people, exotic culture, delicious cuisine, stunning beaches, verdant forests and mountains and colourful nightlife. What more could a bride and groom possibly want? There can be few countries with so many romantic honeymoon options as Thailand, and even fewer offering such amazing value for money, with an endless supply of hotels and resorts to suit all pockets. From traditional Thai beach love nests to boutique chic and grand scale resorts offering an abundance of facilities, the choice of accommodation is excellent. And if you don’t simply want to laze on a sundrenched beach for your entire honeymoon, you can easily combine a multi-centre holiday to enjoy the beach life and a city centre adventure for shopping, culture and nightlife.

Bangkok This exciting city combines wonderful sights, shopping and sumptuous hotel retreats to plunge you into modern Thai culture. Get into the Thai spirit at the awe-inspiring Grand Palace with golden temples and the Emerald Buddha, dazzling in gold leaf. If you love haggling, then shop till you drop at the numerous markets and shopping centres. At night, the rooftop bars and restaurants are buzzing, however, a romantic night-time boat trip gives you a sparkling view of the city from the river.

Hua Hin Take in the bustling nightlife of Hua Hin, the royal resort just three hours drive from Bangkok, where you can ride horses on the beach, drink fresh coconut juice, and look out for beautiful local handicrafts.

Cha Am Only 25 km from Hua Hin’s nightlife, Cha Am is loved for its relaxed, laid-back vibe, stunning beach and Thai atmosphere. This romantic resort is a perfect hideaway for honeymooners.

Phuket The holiday island of Phuket has buzzing nightlife, beaches and ladyboy shows. Throw

yourselves into the clubbers’ paradise or find a more secluded base and enjoy the nightlife only if you want to.

Koh Yao Noi A short boat trip away from Phuket, Koh Yao Noi is a picturesque Muslim island which is in a different time zone. Listen to the call to prayer as you watch the sun go down.

Koh Samui Famous for its white beaches, tropical gardens and coco palms, this is an island packed with opportunities for activities, from walking in the jungle to exploring waterfalls, temples and a butterfly garden, as well as enjoying watersport and the vibrant night life.

Chiang Mai In its northern setting, Chiang Mai offers another side of Thailand. From here you can take in the glorious temples, find silk scarves,

Cover up your shoulders and arms, and take off your shoes if you visit a temple site or someone’s home. Make an effort to return the local politeness with the Sawadee greeting. Don’t accept the offers from friendly Bangkok touts who say they’ll give you a tour of the city – you are likely to end up at a shop being pressurized into spending money. Be aware that the Royal Family is revered here: any insults can land you in trouble. Check whether you will need vaccinations for the area of Thailand you visit – and make sure you take a good insect repellent with you! Avoid the roads for long journeys as they are notoriously busy; use the trains or take internal flights instead.

jewellery and Buddha carvings galore at the famous night market and wash and feed rescued elephants at the wonderful Elephant Nature Park.

Marry in Thailand

Brides and grooms getting hitched in Thailand can choose from a colourful traditional Thai wedding, a Christian wedding or a blend of the two which can be done simultaneously. You can also have a fabulous Muslim wedding or a ceremonious Chinese one. For wow-factor wedding locations, choose from stunning white sandy beaches and lush, tropical resort gardens to mountain peaks, vibrant cities and even underwater ceremonies! Some resorts offer extra touches to make your big day more special – from elephant blessings to traditional Thai dancers and the release of lucky lanterns at sunset for the ultimate in romance. As long as your wedding is properly registered in the Local Registration Office, your marriage in Thailand is recognised back home. Your Marriage Certificate will be in Thai, so it is recommended to commission a ‘sworn translation of the certificate for legal use in the UK. To ensure everything runs smoothly according to Thai law, it is recommended that you use the services of an independent wedding planner or your tour operator’s experienced wedding team.

Documentation

The documentation to be produced is at the discretion of each individual Registrar, however as a guide you will need: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Proof of identity. Bride and groom to be over 18 years old. Both bride and groom to be single. Relevant original paperwork if either party is widowed or divorced. 5. Passports valid for at least six months from date of entry to Thailand.

REAL WEDDINGS

Koh Samui Degrees of love in

When Bristol students Naomi Weston and Dan Hooper met at the start of their degree course at the City of Bristol College, it was love at first sight. By the time they left university, they were not only graduates, but were also happily married after their romantic Buddhist beach ceremony in Thailand

Finding 'the one'

We met on the first day of our degree courses, and we spent the whole day arguing about which Final Fantasy game was the best, I think we both knew from that moment that we were perfect for each other!

The proposal

He proposed at our old flat, in the living room. It was a rather comical proposal. He had gotten the ring specially made for me but wasn't happy with it when it arrived in the post and said: "I want to show you something, but I am sending it back." He showed me my beautiful ring and I asked what was wrong with it! He then said: "Do you like it?" and I said: "Yes" to which he responded: "I want to

62 www.BridesAbroad.tv

marry you!" His proposal was almost unexpected, but not quite, as he had said about a month before: "If I asked you to marry me what would you say?" and I said: "You're not asking me, so I'm not telling!"

Location location

We decided to get married abroad because we wanted something exciting, exotic and different (that didn't cost the earth!), plus I wouldn't get married without a religious ceremony and he wouldn't get married in a church so we settled on a Buddhist ceremony. Both of us have ambitions of living in South East Asia in the next couple of years and so we wanted to get married in that region. Thailand seemed perfect for our first adventure together.

REAL WEDDINGS

The planning

We booked our wedding through Tropical Sky and were given a lovely travel consultant called Karen Andrews who was really helpful, and made our wedding quite a stress-free experience, which is what you want when you are planning a wedding at the same time as trying to pass your second year of university! Quite a lot of the wedding was planned beforehand such as, the date and time and the meal. I took my wedding dress and accessories and Dan had his suit and accessories, which we had already purchased before leaving. The hotel where we stayed and held our wedding ceremony was Mai Samui Beach Resort and Spa. The hotel's wedding co-ordinators were very helpful and easy to contact if I needed any extra information. They arranged the stylist called Danni

who came to do my hair and makeup. She was brilliant. Everything else was included in our package.

The guests

We had six guests at our wedding. They stayed in various hotels on Koh Samui. We were not expecting anyone to come but we invited people we really wanted to be there with us. No one has missed out though as my mum threw us a UK reception for all those who couldn't come.

Getting the look

Mum took me dress shopping in the UK and I tried on so many dresses, but 'the one' was a White Rose Bridal dress, style R338, from College Green Bridal in Bristol. This dress set off a theme to the wedding, which we didn't have originally as it was Ivory with a black sparkly sash, so the theme

REAL WEDDINGS became: ivory/white, black and silver. I brought all my accessories online (most were from either the USA or Singapore). My tiara was from an Etsy shop called Gardens of Whimsy and was made of fake flowers. I had acrylic nails made for me from another Etsy shop called Never Too Much Glitter. We had custom made rings and Dan had Star Trek cufflinks (from Etsy as well). I wore Irregular Choice – Black Mini Floral Magic shoes which came from eBay!

Something old, something new

My Something Old was my Nan's pearl necklace, Something New was my accessories. My Something Borrowed and Blue was my sister's garter. My sister also brought me some earrings and a lovely bracelet which is made of silver beads and has a black sparkly star on it, it came in a package that said "Make a wish!"

us a lovely vanilla sponge cake in the shape of a heart. When we came home we had a cupcake tower at our UK reception.

The ceremony

We were married on Koh Samui, the first ceremony which is called Merit Making was held in the Hin Lad Temple. The evening ceremony was held on the beach in front of our hotel, Mai Samui Beach Resort & Spa. Both ceremonies were about 30 – 45 minutes long. We were married by a registrar but we received blessings from the Head Monk of the temple and a second Monk who performed the evening ceremony. Thai ceremonies are different and so no-one 'gave me away' as such – although my dad did stand with me on the beach as I waited for Dan to arrive with his Long Drum Parade. He had to go through gates to get to me, at these gates he had to pay to go through. The girls at the gates decide whether the money he put in the envelope is enough, if not he must pay more.

The reception

Well groomed

Dan wore a shirt and plain black trousers. We didn't have any bridesmaids

The details

I didn't have a bouquet because it was a Thai ceremony, but the hotel decorated the archway with white flowers – I think they were orchids, and we wore garlands that were made from pulmeria. The hotel made

66 www.BridesAbroad.tv

The reception in Thailand was held on the same beach as the wedding ceremony. We cut the cake and had a sit down meal. We had a traditional Thai meal which consisted of about eight courses. Our decorations matched the white theme, including the white flowers that decorated the wedding archway.

Photographic memories

Our photographer was included in our Wedding Package. We were going to have our own video but I forgot to give the camera to my brother! There are several photos that I really love from the day, but my favourite was the one of Dan holding me on the beach.

Magic moments

My best memory was when I saw Dan for the first time after I was dressed up and seeing his reaction to how I looked. I felt like a princess! The funniest memory is of Dan being made to get his wallet out as he hadn't put enough money in the envelope to get passed the golden gate! There was just one potential disaster when Dan left his trousers back in England – so my Dad and brother took him to Tesco Lotus on the wedding day so he could buy a pair!

The honeymoon

We stayed in the Mai Samui Resort for 10 nights altogether for our honeymoon, but we also stayed in Bangkok for another five nights. Our family were under strict instructions to stay in other hotels on the island!

On budget?

The wedding cost about £1,500 but with the holiday on top it came to about £5,500. We kept to our budget.

Marry in the

Maldives It's heaven on earth!

If you choose to have your wedding or honeymoon in the Maldives, you will fall in love with these Robinson Crusoe islands as well as with each other, and will soon discover that they are the ultimate playground for newlyweds 70 www.BridesAbroad.tv

What's not to love about the magnificent Maldives? Mother Nature has created perfection in this stunning collection of tropical coral islands, and thankfully the Maldivian government has been giving nature a helping hand by carefully nurturing the area to preserve its unique beauty. It is now a top destination for loved-up couples and honeymooners for the tenth year running. The Maldives is a nation of around 1,190 tiny islands, many still uninhabited, grouped into 26 natural atolls in the Indian Ocean, beginning around 250 miles south west of India and stretching down towards the Equator. These islands offer a wide range of hotel resorts, first-class facilities and pictureperfect scenery. Luxury hotels are built on private islands using natural materials indigenous to the islands and everywhere, the lush vegetation has been carefully preserved, marine life protected and beaches groomed and extended to create what can only be described as paradise. The tropical island resorts are reached by speedboat or via a spectacular seaplane journey from the capital, Male. From the windows of the seaplane the lush Maldive islands appear as emerald gems in the ocean, surrounded by their turquoise coral reefs. Accommodation is usually in beautiful beach villas and water villas extending out on stilts over the lagoon. The hotels offer incredible fresh cuisine, luxury accommodation and world-class spas. Down on the white sandy beaches, lovers snuggle in rope hammocks under coco palms or snorkel together over the coral reefs to view the amazingly colourful marine life. As the sun sets, beaches are transformed into candle-lit restaurants as couples dine beneath the stars.

Wedding ceremonies Although you can't legally marry in the Maldives, the breathtaking scenery and sheer luxury of the resorts make this a wonderful place for beach blessings and romantic non-religious ceremonies, which can be arranged through your hotel or wedding planner. These ceremonies can take place in a choice of exotic locations – from unspoiled powder beaches and tiny sandbank islands to catamarans at sea and even during diving excursions over the coral reefs. If you are planning a wedding in the Maldives, simply marry legally at your local registry office before leaving the UK, then, to all intents and purposes, your destination wedding in the Maldives will be your big day in paradise. www.BridesAbroad.tv 71

The hotel’s enchanting wedding hall is opposite Juliet’s balcony in the courtyard of her house. During the fairytale wedding ceremony, the bride faces the balcony, waiting for her husband-to-be. On his arrival the couple

unite in the hall where the mayor welcomes them and one of the guests reads a short poem. After the wedding, newlyweds can take photographs on the famous stone balcony. If you prefer, you can say “I do” at the magnificent Verona Town Hall, then go back to Juliet’s House hotel for an idyllic honeymoon.

TALL SHIP BLESSING

Perfect if: you want to sail away to marital bliss

Make sure that your wedding day is plain sailing by saying 'I do' at sunset on the deck of a romantic 19th-century style sailboat in the middle of the ocean. Star Clippers is offering couples sunset marriage blessings on the upper deck of the fourmasted tall ships Star Clipper and Star Flyer and the five-masted Royal Clipper. The blessings are conducted by the ship's captains and attended by uniformed crew. However, the weddings are not legally recognised, so you will need to have a civil ceremony first. The romance starts as soon as the couple board the ship with Champagne and a fruit basket in their cabin. Star Clippers also offers a

luxurious honeymoon voyage onboard ship with expansive teak decks, swimming pools, informal dining and piano bar. Ships are small enough to call into intimate ports where larger cruise ships can't dock.

Book it! A seven night Mediterranean sailing starts from ÂŁ1,295 per person, including all meals. Marriage blessings can be arranged on voyages in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Central America. www.starclippers.co.uk

HOT AIR BALLOON

Perfect if: you want to view married life from a different perspective! Getting married in a hot air balloon, gracefully drifting over the African plains, has to be one of the most spectacular ways to get married. Balloon weddings are offered in the Masai Mara, in Kenya and include a one-hour flight with each balloon carrying a maximum of 12 guests. For a private wedding ceremony your party can simply include a pastor, a pilot and the bride and groom. The wedding ceremony is followed by a Champagne breakfast in the bush at the landing site, with stunning views of the panoramic Mara plains. Typically a balloon flight takes off at dawn and the pilot flies the wedding party around different parts of the reserve for an hour before landing, after which they will be served an elaborate breakfast. Alternatively, many couples prefer to enjoy the balloon flight as a start to their honeymoon the morning after their wedding.

POP the Question

The facts… Where can I get married abroad?

Where do you fancy? You name it, and you can probably get married there. Weddings can be arranged in more than 30 countries around the world, and in many different settings.

How much will it cost?

Tour operators Kuoni are destination wedding specialists. They say the average price of their destination weddings, including honeymoon, is less than £3,000 – a small cost compared to the average UK wedding! Prices vary considerably for a wedding or vow renewal package; this is paid as a supplement to your holiday package price. Some resorts offer free wedding packages, so bargain hunters should check their options with tour operators.

The legals… Will our marriage be legally recognised in the UK?

Yes. Your wedding will be registered in the country it takes place in and is completely legal under British law, so you don't need to register your marriage again when you get home.

What are the legal requirements?

They vary from country to country, but in general you must be over 20 years of age and need your British passports, original copies of your Birth Certificates and documentation regarding any previous marriages or if you are widowed or divorced. Some countries have additional costs for legalisation and translation of documents. If you book through a tour operator, such as Kuoni, Thomas Cook, Turquoise and Sandals, your dedicated wedding team will give you full details at the time of your booking.

Are there residency restrictions in some countries?

Yes, so you need to check residency restrictions with your tour operator or wedding planner. The most difficult countries are Spain (40 days residency), France (40 days) and Australia (one month and one day); however, there are no restrictions in Antigua, Jamaica or Las Vegas.

What name should I travel under?

We asked dedicated wedding planners to give us a selection of their most frequently asked questions… 86 www.BridesAbroad.tv

If you are getting hitched abroad you can't change the name on your passport until you return home. You must travel in your maiden name and your return airline tickets need to be in the same name as your passport or they will not be valid. Of course you can change your passport to your married name once you are back home in the UK and are in possession of your Marriage Certificate.

When will I receive my Marriage Certificate?

It will either be handed to you at the resort or sent via registered post to your home address. Don't panic if it takes a while to arrive – this is normal, especially if you marry in Jamaica where it can take up to 12 months! If you get married in certain countries, like Mexico and the Dominican Republic it will need to be translated, which will cause extra delay. For more information visit direct.gov.uk and search under passports.

The ceremony… Can we invite guests to our wedding?

Of course! Some hotels even offer reduced rate weddings for more than four guests. Remember to order extras for your guests, such as more wine, a larger wedding cake or extra buttonholes. If the wedding couple is staying at an All Inclusive resort, they will need to buy oneday passes for guests staying at other hotels, and in adults-only resorts you will need to ask special permission for children to attend the wedding on a day pass. All this can be organised at the resort by your wedding planner.

When do I meet the resort's wedding planner?

One to three days after your arrival at your resort. Your wedding planner will sort out the fine details of your wedding, from Champagne to the icing on your cake, and check your documentation so that you can relax as the arrangements are done on your behalf. Once the local registrar is happy your paperwork is in order, your wedding planner will give you a date and time for the ceremony and send out invitations to your guests.

Where will our ceremony take place?

The hotel wedding planner will show you the locations to choose from – usually in the gardens of your hotel, or in a decorated wedding pavilion. If you are marrying in Europe you may choose to exchange vows in the local church or town hall, or in Las Vegas, a wedding chapel. The hotel wedding co-ordinator will show you the locations to choose from. It's unusual to have a ceremony on the beach, but many couples take beach photographs after the ceremony.

Who will be at the ceremony?

Most overseas weddings are civil ceremonies, in the style of registry office services, unless a religious ceremony has

been pre-arranged. The ceremony will be conducted by a Judge, Celebrant, Minister or Registrar. You will need two to four witnesses, who could be anyone from your wedding guests to people you have met on the beach the previous day. Your wedding planner will be there too, to ensure your day goes without a hitch.

The important bits… How should I transport my wedding dress?

We recommend wedding outfits should be packed in a hard suitcase or strong box, as they will be placed in the hold of the plane. It might be an idea to contact your airline for more information. Generally, there is no extra baggage allowance for wedding outfits. You can also take out extra insurance to cover the transportation of your dress.

Can I choose my flowers?

Absolutely! At the resort, your wedding planner will show you photos of bouquets for you to make a selection. Your wedding bouquet and his buttonhole are included in your wedding package, but extra flowers and buttonholes can be ordered for guests and bridesmaids.

What about the music?

You can request whatever music you prefer and it will be arranged for you – from a DJ playing your favourite songs to calypso bands. If you prefer you can pack a CD with your chosen musical selection, which can be played at your wedding.

Will I have a cake?

A wedding cake is included in wedding packages; this is usually a sponge cake with white icing. You can add your own decorations, and even arrange for an upgraded cake. Sandals Resorts offer a

choice of themed weddings, which feature colour-co-ordinated cakes to match the chosen wedding palette.

Who will take care of my hair and makeup?

Every bride wants to look her best and fortunately many hotels have hair and beauty services with makeup artists on hand. Even if they don't, your wedding planner can arrange for experts to come to the hotel.

Can I arrange for a good wedding photographer?

At your pre-wedding meeting, your wedding planner will show you examples of local photographers work so that you can choose the style that suits you best. Your video can also be arranged when you get to the resort. Photographer and DVD are usually at extra cost; they are rarely included in your wedding package.

What about the wedding dinner?

If you have a group of guests at your wedding, a gala dinner is usually arranged as part of your wedding package. If it's just the two of you, your wedding planner will arrange a candle-lit dinner for two in a romantic location.

We want friends and family at the ceremony but can we be alone for our honeymoon?

Absolutely. Simply ask your guests to stay at a different hotel close by, or transfer to another hotel after the ceremony.

WEDDING HAIR DIARY You've booked the venue, bought the dress, next on your wedding list – start planning the timetable to your perfect wedding hair! Getting gorgeous wedding hair isn’t easy – you need to pre plan, book appointments well in advance and make sure your locks are well nourished ready for the big day. From a consultation with your hairdresser, to hair trials and the final cut and colour, there’s plenty to do! Making sure your hair is in top condition should start up to three months before the big day to ensure gorgeous locks. The style team from hair care experts Hairtrade.com have put together a wedding hair timetable to ensure every bride has picture perfect locks, especially those travelling abroad for their wedding.

90 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Plenty of time 3 months to go It may seem ages until your wedding but it’s important now to have your style consultations early just in case you’re planning any drastic changes. If you want to chop off your long hair, try out a new colour or put in hair extensions, now’s the time to do it. If you change your mind, then you have time to put it right, and if you love it, great! It’s also a good time to book your hair trial in the UK.

2 months to go Two months before the big day, start browsing magazines and websites to see which styles will work best with your dress, veil and any hair accessories. Cut them out, print them off and keep them altogether to show your stylist when you have your wedding hair trial.

1 month to go Treat your hair to it’s own pamper session. A hair mask will moisturise, repair and add shine, revitalizing dull and lifeless hair leaving it feeling gorgeous. If you’re short on time, try Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask. You only need to leave it in for ten minutes and it’ll leave your hair shiny and soft.

Not long now! 3 weeks If you are marrying abroad, contact the wedding planner at your resort to confirm that your hair trial and wedding day hair appointments are booked. Email a recent headshot of yourself and your chosen hairstyle to the stylist at your destination hotel so she can decide how to recreate the look for your wedding. If you are also having a hair trial in the UK, this is the best time to do it.

WEDDING HAIR TRENDS 2015 Here is Hairtrade.com’s guide to the wedding looks this season.

1. Ponytails: Whether it's a low ponytail, tucked under, volumised or adorned with intricate clips and headpieces, ponytails are the way to go this season. They will ensure your hair remains looking good throughout the day – and are easy to do yourself. Try the tucked under ponytail for a gorgeous, informal look. Simply pull your hair into a ponytail and cover the band using a small section of hair around the base, tucking the ends underneath. Roll the ends of the ponytail up and outwards and pin the ends to the base. Then gently tease your ponytail to create a fanned out effect. Finish off with hairspray to keep your hair in place. 2. Ballet bun: Updo's are perfect for your wedding – they're timeless, elegant and always stylish. For a traditional look with a contemporary twist, try a ballerina bun at the nape of your neck with a braid wrapped around. Don't forget the hairspray to keep this look in place. 3. Soft curls: If you're going for a more relaxed approach to your big day, how about having your hair in tumbling soft curls. These frame the face beautifully and show off a great cut. 4. Bobs: If you've got a shorter bobbed style, then celebrate your do. Simply curl the ends under for a chic look for the big day. 5. Low twist: The low twist is perfect for your wedding day – it'll keep your hair away from your face and neck, and if you're going for eye catching hair accessories, this is the perfect style to show them off. 6. Bold accessories: Think big when it comes to hair accessories for your special day. Sparkly hairbands, statement clips, floral accessories and jeweled feathers will all be a popular choice for brides.

2 weeks Make sure that your final cut and colour happens a couple of weeks before the wedding. Two weeks allows plenty of time for your hair to adjust to the colour and cut – and keep any grey strands and split ends at bay.

1 week The final countdown in on! Treat your hair to another hair mask too. Do it too close to the wedding and your hair may be too soft for your hairdresser to work with.

Days to go Ensure that you pack your favourite hair styling products, hair grips, curlers/straighteners etc. Don’t forget your hair accessories, tiaras, veils etc! Once you arrive at your destination, have your hair trial at your hotel with days to spare for peace of mind on your big day.

Your wedding day Don’t wear anything you have to take off over your head during your wedding day hair appointment. And remember to take your veil and hair accessories along. Then sit back, relax and enjoy! www.BridesAbroad.tv 91

Document worries

I’m getting married in Santorini this year and I’m worried about the new changes in the legal paperwork. I now need to give longer notice of my wedding and don’t know if I will have the necessary paperwork ready in time for my wedding. I’ve been so caught up in the planning I haven’t even thought about the legal side of things! Can you give me any advice on how I can have all the documentation ready in time for my wedding? Sally, Gainsborough

Hi Sally

The change in the legal paperwork this year means you will now need to give 28 days notice of your marriage at your local registry office rather than 15, but don’t worry as long as you get to start your paperwork at least three months before your wedding you will be fine. It is important that you know exactly what paperwork you need and when you need it by. A lot of your paperwork is time sensitive in Santorini, so it is important that you ask your wedding planner (if you have one) or your contacts in Santorini about timeframes.

Fit to wed?

I’m getting married in just under six months and I’m really struggling to stick to my pre-wedding diet and exercise plan. With the stress of the wedding planning all I want to do when I get a spare moment is sit in front of the TV with a box of chocolates! Do you have any suggestions on how I can set myself a healthy eating regime and exercise plan that I will stick to? After all I do want to look my best on my wedding day! Carly, Glasgow

Hi Carly

The first thing to do is set yourself a realistic and achievable goal – weekly or monthly goals are best as you can reward yourself regularly (with a spa visit not a bottle of wine and box of chocolates!) Now that you are within six months of your wedding this is the perfect time to start your healthy eating regime and to take on the exercise. You may feel like the stress is taking over but once you get into a healthy routine you will feel much better in yourself and more energetic. I also recommend taking up a sporting activity or joining a gym. If you are lacking motivation I suggest teaming up with a friend or, even better, one of your bridesmaids – this way you can motivate each other on the run up to your wedding day!

No time to organize!

My best friend is getting married this year and I am her Maid of Honour. I’m really pleased that I’ve been given such an important role in her big day but feel that all of the pre-wedding tasks and duties are getting on top of me. I am a mother of two children and work fulltime, so as you can imagine I barely get a moment to myself as it is! I really want to be involved in the planning of the wedding but need some help. I don’t want to ask the bride, as I don’t want her to think that I’m not up to the job! Do you have any suggestions on what I should do? Becci, Worthing

Hi Becci

Being Maid of Honour is a big role, but it is important that you don’t take on too much! Taking on too many duties in the planning process may lead to disaster on the day. If you are feeling like it’s all getting on top of you then why not ask for help from the other bridesmaids or members of the bride’s family? It’s more than likely that they will want to be involved in the planning of the day and will be happy you asked. Having such a big role in the day doesn’t mean you have to take on the world! Let others get involved and don’t be afraid to ask for help when it’s needed.

Terrific

Tenerife If you are looking for a year-round sunshine destination, but don't fancy flying long-haul, then the Canary Island of Tenerife is the perfect honeymoon choice 98 www.BridesAbroad.tv

TOP 5

The Canary Islands are known as the 'Islands of the Blessed', so where better for a romantic honeymoon? Tenerife has been 'blessed' with blue skies and warm sunshine throughout the year as well as striking landscapes and a friendly vibe.

1 Just a four-hour hop from the UK, your first glimpse of the island will be from the plane window as you spot the sun illuminating the peak of its famous Mount Teide as it appears on the horizon. The iconic mountain, now a dormant volcano, lies at the heart of Tenerife, giving the island its distinctive character and its visitors an exciting place to explore during their trip.

2

The volcanic island of Tenerife sits in the Atlantic Ocean and is the largest of the seven Canary Islands. It has something to appeal to everyone – from families on fun vacations to loving couples and honeymooners looking for a romantic escape, with plenty of activities on hand and things to see and do to keep you happy and occupied day and night. A honeymoon spent in Tenerife brings an opportunity to discover incredible landscapes on an island scored through with ravines, spectacular cliffs, extensive woodlands, remarkable rock formations, hidden bays, lively holiday resorts and sandy beaches. You can shop in Santa Cruz, the capital – Tenerife is great for bargain hunting as there is no VAT applicable, just 7% local tax making everything cheaper than back home, or visit a museum, play golf, enjoy water sports, go hiking, star gazing or party until dawn – there’s plenty of vibrant nightlife. So don’t just lie on the beach and bake, the island begs to be explored, and excursions and island sightseeing safaris are highly recommended. The Teide National Park’s surreal desert landscape (a huge volcanic area straight out of the movies) will make you believe you have travelled to a different planet, and a whale and dolphin-watching excursion is an absolute must! All this against a backdrop dominated by the majestic Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak at 3,718 metres. Of course, if you simply want to relax and have a restful beach honeymoon, Tenerife ticks the boxes, with over 70 km of beaches where you can unwind, let the sea breeze cool you down, and take a dip whenever you fancy. Most beaches on Tenerife have been awarded the Blue Flag for water quality. Beaches in the south boast golden sands, whereas in the north many have black sand due to the island’s volcanic origins – however, these black beaches are said to have curative powers – as the skin soaks up mineral salts, which helps to reduce stress and increase blood circulation. For further health benefits head to your hotel spa to have your cares soothed away using natural skincare products harvested from the island.

THINGS TO DO

Go stargazing

Don't just gaze into each other's eyes, gaze at the sky. The Teide National Park is one of the best locations on the planet for stargazing due to its clear dark skies, low light pollution and high altitude, and boasts one of the most important solar observatories in the world. So take the opportunity to see the Milky Way, Nebulas, Betelgeuse, Jupiter and shooting stars.

Spot whales & dolphins

You are practically guaranteed to see dolphins and whales if you take one of the Whale Watching boat trips in southern Tenerife. The strait dividing Tenerife from the island of La Gomera is populated with one of the most important colonies of pilot whales on the planet together with bottlenose dolphins – so sail away and be amazed! www.linayacht.com

Enjoy the catch of the day!

Dine at the popular Masia del Mar seafood restaurant, which offers affordable and tasty fish and seafood freshly caught locally. Situated in La Caleta de Adeje, with romantic views over the Atlantic Ocean, particularly around sunset, you can enjoy being serenaded by live Piano and Spanish guitar music. www.calamarin.com

Visit Teide National Park

On an amazing uphill road trip, you will climb high above the cloud layer to Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which encompasses a remarkable volcanic landscape offering a close-up view of the dormant volcano Mount Teide, and other fascinating volcanic formations.

Sleep on the mountain

BERLIN Best for party animals

IF you want to enjoy exciting city nightlife as well as culture then Berlin, the capital of Germany, is a great choice with its intoxicating blend of glamour and grit, that seamlessly combines a dramatic history, vibrant lifestyle, bold architecture, global food, partying and a chilled vibe. The city is situated on the banks of River Spree, with one third composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes – it also boasts one of the largest city parks in Europe, Tiergarten. However the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was a historical event that changed the world, when crowds of euphoric revelers cheered and danced at the Brandenburg Gate – so, not surprisingly, this is one of Berlin’s biggest tourist attractions. Although

little is left of the physical barrier, its legacy lives on in such places as Checkpoint Charlie, the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer (Berlin Wall Memorial) and the East Side Gallery with its colourful murals. Berlin has its share of museums and galleries showcasing

art and cultural history from the Stone Age to the 19th century, including the Hamburger Bahnhof, ‘Louvre on the Museum Island, Pergamonmuseum and Altes Museum. As night falls, enjoy Berlin’s amazing club culture which has, since the fall of the Wall, put the city firmly back on the map, offering many exciting venues for you to party and dance the night away, especially in Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Friedrichshain. However, no trip to Berlin would be complete without a shopping trip along Kurfürstendamm (Ku’damm for short), the city’s longest and busiest shopping street. In the middle of all this, the majestically ruined Gedächtniskirche (Memorial Church) stands quietly as a poignant reminder of the absurdity of war.

Where to stay Hotel Zoo Berlin Gourmets will delight in the new Grace Restaurant at Hotel Zoo Berlin, which is fast becoming a hotspot in the city amongst Berliners as well as hotel guests. Ever since Cleopatra first dipped her toes in a milk bath, Egypt has been synonymous with glowing health and natural beauty. Spa Rituals are as much a part of Egyptian life today as they were in the days of the Pharoahs. So if you are looking to be totally indulged from head-to-toe during a sublime spa honeymoon then Egypt is the perfect choice. After all, what could be more romantic than having your cares soothed away as you watch the sun dip over the Pyramids or the Red Sea? What makes a spa honeymoon in Egypt all the more special is the chance to experience luxurious spa treatments and couples rituals in a peaceful land that is home to one of the most ancient civilizations on Earth – a land of spectacular ancient monuments and diverse, striking landscapes, from bustling cities to desert dunes and the azure waters of the Red Sea. In just five hours from the UK, Egypt offers a taste of the exotic East without the long-haul flight. It is situated at the crossroads between Africa and the Middle East and is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea. What's more, it is blessed with year-round warm sunshine and offers excellent value for money and affordable luxury.

CAIRO

Cairo's main attraction is, of course, its close proximity to the Pyramids of Giza – which are approximately 18 km from the centre of Cairo. These great temples to the kings, also known as the Giza Necropolis, remain as awe-inspiring as the day they were created and includes the three Great Pyramids and The Sphinx. The oldest and largest of these vast monuments is the Great Pyramid of Giza, built as a tomb for King Cheops more than 4,000 years ago and standing at an impressive 137 m next to the equally imposing but smaller pyramids of Kefren and Mykerinos. Guarding the hallowed entrance to the Great Pyramids is Egypt's most iconic landmark – The Sphinx, with its face of a man and body of a lion.

Where to spa FOUR SEASONS HOTEL, CAIRO The palatial 5-star Four Seasons Hotel on the west bank, next to the ancient Zoological and Botanical Gardens, provides a gracious sanctuary within the buzzing city, with impressive views of the Great Pyramids across the gardens. The hotel’s Spa and Wellness Centre offers spa lovers the chance to enjoy Nile views during their pampering treatments. We highly recommend you try the Queen Cleopatra – a rejuvenating bath with milk and honey inspired by Cleopatra, the first lady of spa! Most of us think that Egyptian history means the Pharaohs, Mummies and the Pyramids, all of which are, of course, important symbols of Egypt's ancient past. However, the country's history is far more diverse and complex and nowhere are these layers more revealed than in the buzzing and cosmopolitan capital, Cairo – the only city in the world with antiquities from four civilizations: Pharaonic, Roman, Christian and Islamic. At the city's Egyptian Museum you can view the world's finest collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts, including the magnificent Tutankhamun collection, and the museum of Islamic Art houses 80,000 rare objects from the dawn of Islam to the Ottoman period. For retail therapy head to the colourful souks, including the Khan Khalili Bazaar and Sagha area, where you can shop for gold and silver jewellery, embroidered clothing, leather goods and fine woodwork. www.BridesAbroad.tv 119
