At last! The sun is out, the days are longer and it's great to sit outside on a balmy evening planning your future with your loved one over a glass of chilled wine. Bliss! But if you live in the UK, chances are that despite the fact it's summer, its probably cool and raining!

Patsy Owen The world seems like a better place when the sun is shining. So why settle for grey skies and chilly weather on your big day? If it's your dream to have your wedding Mama Mia! style, high on a hill overlooking the sparkling waters of the Aegean, or with the sand between your toes on a Caribbean beach, then GO FOR IT! This issue of Brides Abroad is packed full of ideas and inspiration for your 'destination' wedding with Real Wedding stories from couples who are happy to share their experiences with you in gorgeous overseas destinations – steal their bridal styles and ideas for your own wedding in paradise! And, of course, we have hundreds of sublime and creative honeymoon ideas, from short-haul mini-moon citybreaks to two-destination dream honeymoons and spectacular journeys by rail. In contrast, we feature a tribal-style safari wedding in Kenya (p.40) and traditional Eastern nuptials in Vietnam (p.50) and Bali (p.58). Or if you prefer somewhere closer to home, no wonder Portugal is a perennial favourite (p.68). Whether you marry in the UK or overseas, you still deserve a dream honeymoon, so make sure you pack our Honeymoon Essentials (p.96) before setting off on your holiday of a lifetime.

Design Why fly when you can make a train journey an exciting part of your honeymoon? In this issue we feature two delightful honeymoons by rail, including a spectacular journey through some of Europe's most breathtaking Alpine scenery to swanky St Moritz St Moritz (p.98) and a romantic mini-moon by Eurostar to Paris, the city of love (p.108). However, if you prefer to hop on a plane and land hours later in paradise, then we reveal five of the most exquisite beaches in the world for you to kick off your sandals and feel the powder white sand between your toes. (p.116). Alternatively you can opt for two honeymoon experiences in one by taking a stopover en-route – our Real Honeymooners blended the glitzy buzz of Dubai with the tranquility of a remote Robinson Crusoe Maldivian island for a truly unforgettable honeymoon. Do Macmillan a favour With the wedding season on the way, couples are making decisions on how to make their happy day extra special. Macmillan Cancer Support has carried out a survey on couples which has revealed that 40 per cent think it's a good idea to use the wedding day to fundraise for a favourite charity, especially one that is close to the heart of so many people. The best way to do this is by encouraging guests to donate to that charity in lieu of giving a gift. Almost 29 per cent felt that buying wedding favours from a charity is also a good way to show allegiance. The survey was commissioned to coincide with the launch of Macmillan Wedding Packages, which offers a range of ways for couples to support the charity including: setting up a Justgiving page; setting up a Tribute Fund to remember a loved one who has experienced cancer – either online or as a collection on the day; creating Macmillan invitations or posters; purchasing products and favours from a wide and exclusive range of wedding products in the Macmillan Online Shop. These products include Wedding Placecards containing Love in a Mist flower seeds for guests to take home and plant as a wonderful keepsake of your special day. Available in packs of 10 for £9.95. www.macmillan.org.uk www.BridesAbroad.tv 07

Jamaica the hip Caribbean island

Marry in Jamaica and swap traditional wedding bells for the sound of the reggae beat

16 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Each island in the Caribbean has its own distinctive character and no other Caribbean destination is as colourful and vibrant as Jamaica – the island is rhythm infused and totally chilled. With its gorgeous year-round climate and stunning scenery, Jamaica is a fantastic choice for destination weddings as well as fun-filled honeymoons. Since Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica in 1494, its natural beauty has remained unspoiled and couples opting to say “I do” on the island will discover a gorgeous destination with breathtaking backdrops for their wedding photographs. Jamaica teems with culture, nightlife and beautiful scenery, with delicious cuisine, soothing spas and a host of activities and sights to keep wedding parties and honeymooners delightfully content and occupied during their stay on the island. Be sure to explore the local attractions, including historic houses and nature trails, botanical gardens and bustling towns and villages. It boasts lush vegetation, sparkling waterfalls, white sand beaches framed by swaying palms and friendly locals. A visit to Dunn's River Falls on Ocho Rios to climb the world famous waterfall is a must – it's where Tom Cruise and Elizabeth Shue famously frolicked in the 1980s film Cocktail. Take a sunset cruise on a catamaran, indulge in watersports and scuba diving, golf and tennis or simply chill in the sunshine and swim in the warm Caribbean Sea. As night falls the popular bars and nightlife of Negril come alive. You can enjoy cocktails or a glass or two of Jamaican Rum, and dance the night away to reggae music for which Jamaica is renowned. And if the music inspires you, visit the Bob Marley museum at the reggae legend's former residence and recording studios.

Marry in Jamaica Getting married on the island is easy. You can exchange vows by the spray of a waterfall, at the altar of a church, on a tropical beach or in the lush gardens of your resort hotel under a floral arch or wedding pavilion.

Legal requirements If you apply in advance for a marriage license you can get married 24-hours after arriving on the island. Arrangements are made through your hotel, travel agent or directly through the Ministry of Justice. Residency requirements are that you are in Jamaica for 24-hours, which must include a working day. Two people are required as witnesses. You need original or certified copies of birth certificates, which includes father's name; Proof of citizenship; Written parental consent if under 18; Change of name by deed poll proven by an Affidavit; Proof of divorce if applicable; Certified death certificate for widow(er). www.BridesAbroad.tv 17

REAL WEDDINGS

Heart to heart in It wasn't exactly love at first sight when Ava Dobrinishka, a Cardiac Sister from Guildford, Surrey met Cardiologist Mark Williams at work, however it wasn't long before their hearts started to flutter and temperatures began to rise as they fell head over heals for each other. They finally exchanged their vows in a romantic Jamaican settting

REAL WEDDINGS

Finding 'the one' We met at Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where my husband is a cardiologist and I am a cardiac sister. We worked together, and it wasn't love at first sight! Initially I thought he was overly confident and loud. But as I got to know him, I realised that was not the case. In fact he was shy and very sweet.

The proposal He proposed at one of our favourite restaurants in Brighton – Pomegranates. We had dinner and the restaurant owner brought me a beautiful bouquet of red roses and a teddy bear in a bag with a card, which Mark had taken there earlier that day. He had written the proposal in the card. I was speechless, and surprised! As for the ring, in the previous few weeks he had decided that we would compare hand sizes, from hand sizes we went to finger sizes. I then told him that I had some rings that I was planning to get rid of. Unknown to me he took one of the rings to obtain my ring size. I had no idea what he was planning and that he had gone off to buy an engagement ring. He chose it on his own and I love it! It was totally unexpected!

Location, location My husband wanted to get married abroad. It sounded rather exotic and different. In fact neither of us wanted to get married in the UK. My husband's family originate from Jamaica and so Jamaica was an easy choice.

The planning We used the services of Pierre Carr, Wedding & Event Design to plan our wedding. Pierre Carr work closely with Elegant Resorts on honeymoons, so everything was planned through Pierre Carr with the honeymoon covered too. A complete service.

The guests We had 15 wedding guests from the UK and Bulgaria plus other guests that travelled from the USA, Cayman Islands, Germany and Jamaica. In total we had about 70 guests who stayed at a number of hotels and guest houses in Jamaica. Most people were delighted to accept the invitation, although some could not attend due to the expense. 20 www.BridesAbroad.tv

sophisticated. For our flowers, we chose purple and white dendrobiums, white hydrangea and purple spray roses. I had a three tier wedding cake. Two Jamaican fruit cakes (made by my husband's unofficially adopted mother) and a vanilla white cake.

The ceremony Our beautiful wedding ceremony took place on the Spa Lawn at Round Hill Resort, Hanover, Jamaica and lasted around 30-minutes. We were married by Reverend Glenroy Clarke and my mother, Mrs Vayde Dobrinishka, gave me away.

Getting the look

The reception

My dress was a Justin Alexander, fish tail lace gown. All white, and I wore pearl earrings and hair piece to accessorise the look. I used the services of a professional hairdresser, Rochelle at Hair by Chellz and makeup artist, Joni Powell of Gourmet Makeup, to do my makeup out in Jamaica.

Our reception took place at our hotel, Round Hill, on the Hannover Terrace and our theme was 'Hearts'. The table names were parts of the heart (e.g. Apex, Septum, Ventricle) as we are both in cardiology. The head table was called the Heart. The tables were decorated with flowers and candles. The meal was a hot and cold buffet with plenty of choice on the menu to suit all guests, and included Jamaican specialities such as Jerk Rubbed Pork Loin, Conch in Rundown Sauce and Chicken Skewer with Mango Chutney to international cuisine including Vegetable Spring Rolls with Sweet Chilli and Vegetable Lasagne.

Something old, something new I didn't follow the old tradition and had nothing old, borrowed or blue. All of my attire was new!

Groom & bridesmaids Mark wore a most elegant two-piece navy blue tailor-made suit. His Jacket was knee length and he wore a lavender waist coat and cravat, all made by Steve Bell a bespoke tailor in Portobello Road, London. He wore a white shirt, diamond studded cuff links and black shoes. My bridesmaids wore long, elegant, purple debut maxi dresses.

The details We decided to theme our wedding with the colours of purple and white, which we thought would be elegant and

22 www.BridesAbroad.tv

were all wonderful. They all bring a different memory and are reminders of our wonderful day.

Magic moments My most special memory of our day was standing at the altar looking into my husbands eyes. However, the day was all wonderful and filled with lots of fun and laughter.

Any disasters? One of the groomsmen opened his suit package only to find that his cravat was missing. He had to use the pageboys cravat and borrow a tie for the pageboy to wear! But that was the only disaster. Phew!

On Budget? The wedding cost approximately £40,000 all in all, which was just over budget, but well worth it!

The honeymoon After our wedding we moved to the Hermitage Bay Resort in Antigua for our wonderful honeymoon.

We had not one but three First Dances. We started with a Waltz to Arethra Franklin's Natural Women, then free-style I'm Lost Without You by Robin Thicke, and then we danced swing to Danza Kaduro when we then invited everyone to join us on the dance floor. We had music throughout dinner and partied thereafter with a DJ.

St Lucia the Caribbean love island

Say “I do in St Lucia, the Caribbean's most popular wedding island, with the famous Pitons as a stunning backdrop on your special day 24 www.BridesAbroad.tv

St Lucia is one of the world's favourite wedding and honeymoon destinations, which is no surprise – this exotic Caribbean island has got it all! St Lucia simply epitomizes the concept of a tropical paradise for your wedding celebrations. The verdant island, with its lush mountains, rainforests, rich vegetation and banana plantations is a photographer's dream, especially the landmark Pitons that dominate the shores of St Lucia – these twin mountain peaks soar 2,000 ft above the south west coast giving the island it's unique identity. It even boasts the world's only walk-in volcano, which last erupted more than 200 years ago. If you dream of a beach wedding, St Lucia is a dream come true. It boasts long stretches of unspoiled, palm fringed sandy beaches and secluded coves. Most resorts in St Lucia nestle along the beaches on the southwest (Caribbean) side of the island and many offer wedding pavilions overlooking the sparkling ocean in their manicured tropical gardens. The less populated Atlantic east coast is dotted with nature reserves. Pigeon Island, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway at Rodney Bay, is a 40-acre natural park with the remains of an 18th century British Fort. Another favourite location is the picturesque marina at Marigot Bay, famed as the film location for Dr Doolittle in the 1960s, and now better known for its array of sailing yachts and luxurious Gin Palaces moored for the night.

Marry in St Lucia Most hotels in St Lucia offer wedding packages aimed at making your special day a hassle-free, romantic moment to cherish. What's more, there are plenty of deals on offer for wedding couples at the island's hotels and resorts, including free night's accommodation, free meals, free upgrades and even free wedding ceremonies. Weddings at St Lucia's luxury resorts are offered in a variety of exotic locations, such as garden gazebos, huts overlooking the surf or romantic beach spots. Religious wedding ceremonies can be arranged in a church by the hotel’s wedding planners. You can even tie the knot at some of the island's most amazing locations – in the midst of the rainforest, a quaint island church or even a wedding involving an adventure activity such as scuba or horseback riding. Some of the more unusual ways to plunge into matrimony are at the top of an expert-only mountain trail, along a summit ridge of Gros Piton, diving among the colourful fish on the coral reef or sailing into the sunset. They are all possibilities…

Legals You need to be over 18-years old and must be in St Lucia for three full business days prior to the wedding day for the license application process to be completed. You will also need the following documentation: passport and/or birth certificate; an original or certified copy of a divorce decree; in the case of a widow/widower, a certified death certificate.

Honeymoon heaven For couples that don't want to spend the entire honeymoon lounging on the beach, there are plenty of activities available on the island – jungle biking; rainforest hikes and sky rides; sailing; diving; snorkelling and other watersports; whale watching; coastal kayaking; golf and horse-riding.

Sulphur Springs Park is in the crater of the Soufriere volcano, with hot rocks, steam and boiling pools of murky water. Every full moon, the pools turn into geysers – apparently something to do with the tides.

There are plenty of hiking trails through St Lucia's green and mountainous interior, so hire a guide and explore! For the ultimate adrenaline buzz you can wiz above the rainforest on Zip Line Wires at the Treetop Adventure Park in Dennery.

The Gros Piton is the easier of the two famous Pitons to climb. The hike up the Piton with a guide takes an average of two hours to the summit and is strenuous but not too difficult. It’s worth it for the spectacular views of St Lucia.

Guided kayaking tours embrace St Lucia's beautiful natural coastline and crystal clear waters. You will be offered expert instruction. Tours from the luxury retreat Anse Chastanet can include a picnic lunch and a swim off a deserted beach.

The luxury resorts in St Lucia boast stunning spas, including The Body Holiday, a stunning resort devoted to health and wellbeing, which offers both western and Ayurvedic treatments.

REAL WEDDINGS

A family affair at

SMUGGLERS

COVE

When civil servants Lorraine Escudier and Paul Tuckett from Corsham in Wiltshire met at work, they felt an immediate spark. However, it was to be years later that they met again and sealed their love once and for all with an intimately romantic ceremony at Smugglers Cove in St Lucia, with son Elliot as pageboy.

Finding 'the one'

Initially we met at work and it was love at first sight. However, we lost touch for a number of years then met again and fell in love again.

The proposal Paul proposed to me at home on Christmas Day, the day after I came home from hospital after having our baby. He took me completely by surprise by going down on one knee in the lounge.

Location, location It was a second marriage for both of us and we wanted to do something special just for ourselves without the stress, fuss and expense of a big British wedding, so getting married overseas seemed to fit the bill. We wanted a hotel somewhere tropical where we could have a beach wedding that was also family friendly with childcare for our son Elliot.

Tropical Sky arranged our hotel, flights, transfers and booked our wedding with the hotel. They were excellent with all the arrangements. When we had questions they were extremely helpful and ensured we had all the correct documentation required. Before we went we planned our wedding outfits and booked the wedding photographer.

The planning

The guests

We used the services of the wedding planner at Tropical Sky in the UK and the wedding planner in our hotel resort upon arrival.

We didn't take any guests with us. We just wanted an intimate occasion, just the two of us and our son.

REAL WEDDINGS

Something old, something new My borrowed was a tiara from my sister. The new was my dress and a gold necklace that Paul bought me which I admired in the jewellers when we were buying the wedding rings.

Groomed & pageboy Paul wore a linen suit bought online from Burton. Our son, Elliot was pageboy and wore linen trousers and linen shirt bought online from Little Linens. I didn't have any bridesmaids.

The details Getting the look I bought a strapless dress online from BHS. I wanted a flattering, simple style which wouldn't be too hot to wear and was lightweight for taking as hand luggage. I also wore jewelled sandals from Next. I did my own hair and makeup as I wanted to feel like I looked myself, rather than having someone I didn't know making me look unrecognisable.

28 www.BridesAbroad.tv

All I had to choose was the colour theme. I chose a simple bouquet in purple and was delighted to see they had included fresh orchids in the arrangement, which are favourites of mine. For our wedding cake we had a delicious vanilla sponge.

The ceremony We got married at the cliff top wedding gazebo in a secluded area of the hotel grounds. As we didn't have any family with us we hired the services of a babysitter to look after Elliot throughout the 30-minute wedding ceremony, which was conducted by the local registrar. During the ceremony the registrar read a poem about love, which was a lovely touch.

REAL WEDDINGS

The reception We paid for a babysitter for Elliot for a few hours while we had a romantic dinner for the two of us in a private beachfront gazebo, which was lit with fairy lights and we had our own personal waiter. We had a delicious meal of tamarind glazed chicken cutlets, sweet potato and pumpkin mash and island vegetables followed by chocolate parfait

Magic moments My best memory is exchanging vows and feeling emotional but incredibly happy – the funniest memory is trying to cut the cake!

On budget ? The wedding itself was free with the holiday, we only paid extra for my bouquet £42, Champagne £21 and the registrars fee £162. It was all on budget!

The honeymoon We arrived on a Saturday, got married on Thursday and stayed a total of three weeks, which included Christmas and Elliot's second birthday, so we had both wedding and honeymoon at the hotel.

Photographic memories We had a wedding photography package with Colorbox who had an office in the hotel. We booked a basic package which included 24 prints and also an additional fee for a CD of all our photos in high resolution so we could create any photo products ourselves when we got back. We had a meeting with the photographer a few days before the wedding to discuss if we had any special requests for photos. Due to the changeable weather on our wedding day only the ceremony photos were taken on the same day and we agreed to having the rest of our photos taken the following day, which meant getting dressed again in our wedding outfits. My favourite photo is of the three of us under the arch covered in bougainvillea immediately after the ceremony. The sun is shining, the colours are beautiful and we're all looking blissfully happy. 30 www.BridesAbroad.tv

This distinctively Latin-style country, with its traditional and relaxed ambience belongs more to Central and South America and offers a charming blend of beauty, energy and history. However, you can choose to have a religious wedding as well as a civil ceremony, which can be performed at the Registry Office or elsewhere, including in your hotel grounds or on the beach. Fees range from £65 to £160. The ceremony will be conducted in Spanish in the presence of an interpreter and the marriage certificate will be in Spanish, which you can then have translated into English. There are no Mexican residency requirements, but you should allow a few days in Mexico before your wedding for legal checks. You must also have a blood test done in Mexico. The Civil Registers Office can recommend a doctor or clinic. Those under 18 cannot marry without parental consent.

Barefoot Beach Ceremony

IN MEXICo Susanne and Mark’s romantic ceremony in Cancun

W

hen a young Susanne Dwyer met her brother's friend Mark, little did they know that they would eventually fall head over heals in love. The couple from Trim in Co. Meath, Ireland, dreamed of marrying on a tropical beach with sand in their toes, and Mexico proved to be the perfect place to make their dream come true.

Finding 'the one' We have known of each other practically all our lives, but both did our own thing. When I moved back to Trim, I started socialising with my brother and his friends – Mark was one of them. We got on very well, but I never thought of him as anything more than a friend until a mutual friend said that we would make a good couple. I started to think of him differently and two weeks later, things started to develop! I always thought he was good looking, he had won 'hunk of the year' back in our school days, but not until my friend planted that seed, did I look at him in a new light.

The proposal He proposed in Portugal on the beach. On one of our first days in Portugal, we had taken a walk along the beach and picked up some nice stones and hidden them in the rocks. We said we would check if they were still there in a few days. A few days later Mark suggested we took a walk on the beach. I had my camera with me and was taking a few shots. We got close to where we had hidden the stones and I could see him down on the ground, I thought he had collapsed, but there he was, with the ring in his hand on one knee!! I cried (tears of joy of course) as he said “Will you answer me?” Of course I said yes, yes, yes!! It was a total surprise!

Location, location We had looked at some options of getting married at home in Ireland, we wanted to keep it small and simple. We are no spring chickens so we had other priorities rather than spending a fortune on one day, plus neither of us are comfortable being the centre of attention, so something small was what we wanted. One day, Mark said, “lets get married on a beach”– I didn't hesitate in agreeing with him. The thought of getting married in my bare feet with a light dress in bright sunshine was perfect! Initially we thought of having a wedding in Portugal where we got engaged and inviting friends and family, but in the end we decided on an intimate wedding with just the two of us and a celebration for family and friends once we got home. Thankfully our loved ones were very supportive. We decided to go further afield for such a special occasion, and in the end we chose Now Jade Riviera, Puerto Morelos in Cancun Mexico.

The planning I got in touch with a couple of travel agents and from day one, found Romy from Tropical Sky to be amazing! She was so helpful www.BridesAbroad.tv 35

REAL WEDDINGS and patient with my many questions. They were extremely helpful! If I emailed Romy, I always heard back from her promptly. As it was only the two of us, there wasn't a huge amount of planning, but it was all sorted before we went.

Getting the look My wedding dress was actually a bridesmaids dress in ivory. I added my own embellishments to it. I really wanted something light and flowing and it was perfect. I couldn't justify spending a fortune on a dress I would wear for one day (two actually, as I wore it for the party when we got home) Even if we had married in Ireland, I would have chosen the same dress. I bought my hairpiece and bridal cuff from Etsy! Love that site! I wore barefoot sandals too, that I got from

Etsy. I got my hair and makeup done at the Spa at the resort, although I did fix my eye make up myself as I am very fussy about my eye make up!

Something old, something new Old was me, ha ha! New – my dress; Borrowed – my little sisters earrings; Blue – my barefoot sandals!

married on the beach. For my flowers I chose my two favourite colours, coral and turquoise/teal. I had turquoise barefoot candles so I brought a bit of ribbon to wrap around the flowers in the same colour. As it was just the two of us, we had a whole cake between ourselves, which we cut on the beach. We gave some to our brilliant photographer and the wedding planner.

The ceremony Groomed to perfection Mark wore a pair of linen trousers and a white linen shirt, he wanted to be confortable too. Oh and a pair of flip-flops

The details We didn't have a particular theme for our wedding, we just wanted it to be relaxed and simple – I just really wanted to get

36 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Just as I had always wanted, our 20-minute ceremony took place on the beach.

The reception Again, as it was just the two of us, we didn't have a reception. We went for an ! hour or two to get some photos taken in the beautiful Puerto Morelos, then back to our hotel. Our wedding co-ordinator had booked a lovely romantic meal for us on

REAL WEDDINGS the balcony of the French Restaurant looking out over the Caribbean Sea. There happened to be a Mexican garden party going on that night, with tables laid out like a wedding reception, so we stayed there for a while, really relaxed and had a few cocktails. For our wedding meal, I had snails & swordfish! Lovely, Mark had the fillet steak. We had our First Dance in our

room, just the two of us – Lets Stay Together by Al Green. We also had our (second) First Dance at home at our party.

Photographic memories After deciding to get married in Mexico, our photographer was the most important decision to be made. I am a portrait photographer myself so I knew exactly the style I wanted to capture our special day, the little moments we would have them forever, but I didn't want anyone being intrusive or too formal. Lupe, our photographer, was perfect! I knew I had made the right decision. Communication was brilliant, and the price was right. Lupe arrived early to capture a few photos in the Spa of me getting ready as well as very natural images of Mark and I when we saw each other for the first time on the beach. The photos really take us back to our special day and bring back all the happy emotions we experienced. Lupe let us walk and talk on our own as she captured some lovely natural/candid images. Any little requests I had for her, she was more then willing to oblige. I wanted some photos taken in the hammocks by the pool and they turned out fabulous! After the ceremony, we went to the town of Puerto Morelos where she

captured some of my favourite images of the day. I was a little anxious as I am more comfortable the other side of the camera, taking the photos, but she made me relax. The only problem is I don't have enough wall space on which to hang all my lovely images!

Magic moments I love how our ceremony was all about us. We weren't worrying about any guests and could totally concentrate on our vows and on what the celebrant was saying to us. We had a lot of fun on our special day – I did struggle getting in and out of the hammocks in the pool for the photos. Had to hike the dress right up and the Bridget Jones knickers may have been exposed a little!

On budget? It was definitely within our budget and I know people paid almost the same amount for their wedding dresses as we did for our entire wedding, including the ceremony, flights and two weeks all inclusive in the preferred area of the 5*resort.

The honeymoon We were in Mexico for two weeks. We arrived one week before our ceremony and stayed for a week after.

Kenya by Royal approval

There's a reason why Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton in Kenya – they were enchanted by the romance of this wild and wonderful country, and you can be too! 40 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Its wide open plains, tropical Indian Ocean beaches, romantic camps, exotic colonial hideaways and opportunities to get up close and personal with magnificent game and rare birds are amongst the reasons that Kenya is becoming increasingly popular as a wedding and honeymoon destination. Kenya is not only renowned for its incredible safaris, it is equally popular for its beautiful white sand beaches and beautifull seaside resort of Mombassa and Malindi. You can have the best of both worlds and combine a safari wedding amongst Big Game and wildlife and a ceremony embracing the local native traditions with a relaxing seaside honeymoon. Alternatively you could opt for a beach ceremony followed by a safari honeymoon. For those who want something a little different, what could be more spectacular than getting married on the equator with the backdrop of the magnificent Mount Kenya? You can even take a hot air balloon tour of the breathtaking landscape to celebrate your special day. And the icing on the cake is that the African climate guarantees sunshine most of the year, with only a very short rainy season between April and May.

Marry in Kenya What could be more romantic than celebrating your wedding in a stunning African safari setting, surrounded by nature and the sounds of the bush? No wonder this idyllic location proved to be the inspiration for Prince William to propose to Kate – you will be inspired too will be treated like Royalty if you choose Kenya to host your destination wedding. Your celebration can be as intimate or as grand as you choose, with just the two of you or with friends and family to share your Kenyan safari experience. Wedding ceremonies in Kenya can be arranged at private, scenic viewpoints with stunning vistas across the gamefilled landscape, and in romantic camps and lodges of luxurious beachside resorts. With its seemingly endless savannah plains, rugged mountainous interior, ancient rainforests and beautiful coastline you will have no problem in finding the perfect location to suit your individual style to begin married life together.

Legal requirements Weddings in Kenya are relatively simple to organize, with very little paperwork and documentation required. Your tour

operator or wedding planner will be able to advise on the legal requirements. Kenya offers a variety of wedding options – from religious ceremonies in a church and civil ceremonies in a Register Office to civil ceremonies, blessing and renewal of vows in a beautiful setting such as a luxury safari camp amid the Savannah plains or barefoot down on a gorgeous white sand beach. If you choose to have a blessing ceremony there is very little paperwork necessary and although you will not receive an official wedding certificate it will be a truly spiritual experience. A couple would normally need to notify their church and the office of the Registrar General at least 21 days before the wedding date. However a special license can be issued from the Registrar of Marriages if this requirement cannot be met (i.e. if a couple are due to arrive in Kenya just a few days before the wedding). This enables the marriage to still be recognised under the Marriage Act. A special license is also required for a civil ceremony at a venue other than a Register Office. Before travel you will need to send certain documents to the Registrar of Marriages in order to apply for the special license. You will then need to arrive in Kenya at least four days in advance of your wedding in order to finalise all the paperwork.

Required Documents The following documentation is required: • • •

• • •

• • •

Valid passports/identity cards and visas Birth Certificates An affidavit from a solicitor or notary declaring that you are both single and eligible to marry If under 21 years, written permission from parents If divorced, a Decree Absolute If widowed, previous Marriage Certificate and spouse's Death Certificate If adopted, all adoption papers If you have changed your name, all relevant paperwork If you plan to marry in a church it is helpful to supply a supporting letter from your home priest/pastor

Vows on an

AFRICAN SAFARI

Lisa and Qamar’s traditional Kenyan wedding

42 www.BridesAbroad.tv

When globe-trotter Lisa Tytler embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to South America, little did she know that she would find everlasting love with fellow traveller Qamar Zaman. Soon the loved up pair, who live in Essex, made another life-changing trip – this time on safari to Kenya, where they exchanged wedding vows in the enchanting Masai Mara …

FINDING 'THE ONE’

We actually met whilst on tour in South America. I had joined the tour a few weeks earlier and Qamar joined whilst we were in Lima, Peru. The very first time we met I was actually unwell and the rest of my friends were out for the day visiting local markets. Our tour guide knocked on my door to see if I wanted to meet the newbie joining the group and there was Qamar. I discovered almost straight away that he worked in the same insurance market I did in London and that he was a big Liverpool football fan.

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT?

I am not sure that we can say it was love at first sight but definitely an attraction that grew and developed. There are a few of us that are so close now from that South American trip. Having spent so much time in each other's pockets for so long, it is certainly one way of getting to know each other inside and out. We definitely feel our relationship is built on solid foundations as we met just being our natural selves from day one – no makeup, no smart clothes, no date nights – just laughter, good times and a big yellow Tucan Truck.

travelling days Africa has always held a special place in my heart and I wanted to share that feeling with my husband-to-be. We decided on the Masai Mara as, due to trouble there when I last wen,t I hadn't spent any time there, so it would be a new experience for both of us at this special time.

THE PLANNING

I basically knew exactly what I wanted and made all my own arrangements. Tropical Sky arranged our travel and were very helpful – in fact the whole trip was booked around six weeks after the intial proposal for us and our guests. We planned a lot before we went as well as arranging a UK party at Little Channels in Chelmsford as soon as we returned home for all those friends and family (110 people) who couldn't share our special day in Kenya. We had outfits arranged, table plans and favours for Kenya, we

THE PROPOSAL

Qamar propsed at home just before Christmas 2012. It was the last day in work for me until after the New Year and we had always said that we would have a nice meal at home together. I got in from work, Qamar ran a bath for me so I could relax whilst he was cooking and after getting comfy he served our first course of Scallops and Chorizo. It tasted delicious but then all of a sudden he produced a bunch of roses and got down on one knee. It was totally unexpected and emotional. I think it took me 10 minutes to actually say yes. I was shocked. The ring was perfect and it was the perfect size. We were so excited to tell our families that we didn't end up eating the rest of the meal until about 10 pm – It all was just wonderful.

LOCATION, LOCATION

We always said that we would get married abroad but I didn't necessairily want a traditional beach wedding. It is something that we had previously spoken about so once Qamar had proposed we knew that's what would happen. Since my

sent over a photo of the flowers that we wanted and everything for our reception was organised before we left. The only thing we had to do on arrival in Nairobi was to obtain our marriage licence and then, once we got to the Masai Mara, choose the time and location of the ceremony.

THE GUESTS

There were 13 additional guests with us – my dad and stepmum Jane, Qamars Mum, two brothers and sister, Jane's sister and boyfriend, Jane's dad, two of Qamar's best friends, which included the best man and his wife, and my bridesmaid Emily. We all stayed at the Porini Lion Camp for four nights. What made part of our wedding magical was that not only did we fulfill our dreams of getting married out in the wild, we also fulfilled the dreams of others who had always wanted to go on safari. We had a few www.BridesAbroad.tv 43

REAL WEDDINGS members of my family who couldn't make the trip for various reasons but otherwise we had full acceptance from the start.

GETTING THE LOOK

My wedding dress was amazing and I really did feel extra special wearing it. It was nothing that I thought I would end up with. It was bought at The Wedding Shop in Colchester and the dress was by Stella York. It was made of lace and glitz and fitted me like a glove with a sweetheart neck line and a beautiful lace train. The best thing was that I got to wear it for a second time at the UK party and even for a third time for a photoshoot. I had a tiara and a lovely veil with lace on and my shoes were my naughty buy – a pair of lace peep toe Jimmy Choos. I wore a pair of Swarovski drop earrings my mum had bought me and a beautiful bracelet my husband bought me as a wedding present. I did my own makeup using Benefit – I don't wear a lot anyway and kept it fairly neutral.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW

This item was given to me by my bridesmaid Emily – a large safety pin that attached to my garter (which had a blue bow) with the four elements attached to it – Something Old – a penny; Something new – a horseshoe; Something Borrowed – a pearl from the ocean; Something Blue – a blue crystal. My dad also put a penny in my shoe for good luck.

GROOM & BRIDESMAIDS

Qamar looked so handsome in a cream linen and silk suit from Saville Row with a white shirt and a tan Gucci tie and brown shoes. I bought him and my dad a pair of enamel elephant cufflinks to wear on the day. My dad, the best man and his brothers all wore the same linen and silk, the boys all wore red ties to match the bridesmaid, with the exception of dad, who matched my stepmum's outfit. My bridesmaid Emily was in a Two Birds dress in a cabernet red with gold accessories and sandals. These dresses are amazing as you can wear them in 15 different styles, so she had it one way for the actual wedding in Kenya and another way for the UK party.

THE DETAILS

Red was our colour theme – probably for several reasons. It was after Christmas and a winter colour, the colour of an African sunset and probably because Qamar supports Liverpool. I ordered red roses and calia lillies for my bouquet and Emily had a smaller bouquet of red and cream roses. Qamar had a white rose button hole and the all the guests had a red rose button hole. The porini Lion Camp made us a lovely little cake on the day which we cut after the speeches. For the UK party we had the most amazing cake made by Willow Piper – three tiers of chocolate, vanilla and carrot cake, all animal print with African animals perched around it. The cake topper was, of course, a male and female lion.

The ceremony took place a five-minute drive from the Porini Lion Camp. It was the perfect spot on top of a hill with a single tree overlooking the plains. The Masai tribes were there in wonderful colours and they made a decorated archway for me to walk through to meet Qamar at the Pastor's stand. All our guests were seated at either side. It was peaceful, lush green with a wonderful clear blue sky. The ceremony must have lasted around an hour and my dad, who means the world to me, gave me away. I walked 'down the aisle' to meet Qamar to How long will I love you? by Ellie Goulding. We first had a Masai blessing by the elders then a naming ceremony for myself followed by our main ceremony conducted by Pastor George who flew in from Nairobi. The Masai then did some dancing before us. The ceremony was one of the most emotional we have all witnessed. Following our vows by Pastor George we decided to say how we felt in our own words to each other.

LOCAL CUSTOMS AND RITUALS

During our blessing by the Masai Elders they crouched beneath the archway in front of our feet and took a sip of cows milk/blood which was then spat out at our feet. Following this we took a slow walk to be seated just like a King and Queen for the naming ceremony. We were dressed in gorgeous jewelery and Masai capes whilst the tribes sang in front of us.

THE RECEPTION

Following the ceremonies and dancing we were taken on a short private game drive which was the most surreal feeling. We stood out of the top of our jeep in our wedding attire thinking this is just the most amazing feeling. We were then taken to a location down by the river, where Hippos were wallowing I might add, for our Wedding breakfast. It was so private it was wonderful and peaceful. The menu was a buffet of food but the chefs who came along and cooked it for us did a marvelous job. And of course we celebrated with a glass of Champagne. We took out some table decorations for our guests, our way of a small thank you. Each indivdual had a place name holder which was either a Lion, Elephant, Zebra or Monkey we had glass zebra patterned coasters holding a different photo of the two of us. We gave everyone a magnet which had a saying on which we believed represented that person. We didn't do our First Dance until we returned to the UK and it was See Beneath Your Beautiful by Labriynth and Emily Sande.

kind enough to put all 550 of them on disc for us. There was no official video taken on the day but, bless my dad, he spent around 24 hours editing a video to be played at our UK reception. It was very emotional. It was nice to have photographs with a lot of natural poses rather than formal ones. However, our favourites are ones where Qamar and I are with the Masia tribes and the other is when we are kissing in the safari jeep captured by one of our guests!

MAGIC MOMENTS

The whole day was one beautiful, amazing, magical day with lots of special moments. An event/holiday we will all be talking about for a long time. Due to the heat we got married fairly early in the day so we literally had a full day of celebrations. One of my funniest memories of the day is us all posing with the security guards with their AK47 guns – I mean who has a shot like that in their wedding dress?

ON BUDGET?

The wedding package itself was £800 however the flights, safari and 10 day honeymoon came to around £9,500. This did exclude the dress etc. but it was so much cheaper than a UK wedding as we got nearly three weeks abroad from it too, as well as a wedding day which exceeded all expectations. To be honest we didn't really have a set budget – we just made sure we did what we wanted to do without being ridiculous.

THE HONEYMOON

Although it was tough to leave the Porini Lion Camp, for our honeymoon we headed over to Zanizbar for 10 nights. It was so relaxing with white sands and clear blue waters.

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT

After our bush lunch we headed back to camp to freshen up before heading out for an evening game drive. On this drive we saw a Cheetah just before she sprinted off to make a kill, which was a wonderful wedding present to witness. We then sat and watched her eat it before we headed off for another surprise bush dinner with a bonfire.

Renewal of Vows packages Each Never Ending I do's ceremony is bespoke and designed to suit the couple's individual requirements. You can choose the style and location you desire – and for a really special flavour of the country you can opt for a traditional PoruwaSiritha ceremony, which is the traditional Buddhist marriage ceremony in Sri Lanka, and is truly a magical way to say "I do".

Poruwa wedding customs and traditions The traditional Poruwa wedding takes place on a 'Poruwa' – a beautifully decorated wooden platform and embraces the three man elements of earth, wind and fire. The Poruwa wedding begins with the arrival of the groom in a procession, often accompanied by drummers and dancers. When the bride arrives, dressed in a white saree the bridegroom puts a chain around her neck and a wedding ring on her finger. The most important part of the ceremony is the tying of the nuptial knot, when the right thumbs of the couple are tied with gold or white thread and the ashtaka blesses the union while pouring water from a special jug on their fingers.

REAL WEDDINGS

British born Andy Cowell had been living in Australia before moving to Vietnam for his work as a structural engineer. It was through his work colleague that he met and fell head over heals for Vietnamese Ly Cao. When the couple sealed their love they chose a traditional ceremony in Ly's home town of Nha Trang to exchange their marriage vows

East meets west in

Vietnam FINDING 'THE ONE'

We met in Ho Chi Minh City where we now live. We were introduced to each other by a mutual friend, who was my university friend and Andy's colleague. It wasn't quite love at first sight, although we were definitely keen on each other. But we took our time to fall in love.

THE PROPOSAL

Andy proposed to me in Langkawi, Malaysia. I had just turned 30-years-old and Andy had arranged 30 gifts/letters for my birthday. Towards, the end of the 30 gifts I received the flight tickets and hotel. On one evening he proposed on the beach, holding a plastic shield and sword (a poor attempt at knight in shining armour and used our 'in-joke' glittering toy panda to house the ring. It wasn't totally unexpected as he had measured my finger several months earlier.

LOCATION, LOCATION

Andy had moved to Vietnam from the UK over five years ago and our friends were scattered around the world. With Nha Trang being my hometown, and a good location for Andy's guests to visit, we thought it would make a suitable wedding venue. The UK was too far away for us and too expensive. We found Ana Mandara in Nha Trang to be exactly what we were after for our

52 www.BridesAbroad.tv

wedding party (on the beach, great service, superb food, located centrally and easy going).

THE PLANNING

Generally, we did all the arrangements ourselves. Ana Mandara had a sales/marketing representative who was a great help to us and essentially arranged everything for the Saturday reception. We planned a lot – well Andy did as I was studying. We had an organisation guide that we obtained from theknot.com.au and it was very useful.

THE GUESTS

We had about 50 guests (mostly family) at the ceremony, 200 (mostly local) for the Friday banquet and about 70 (close family and friends) for the party at Ana Mandara. Thirty guests were from overseas and about thirty guests were from Ho Chi Minh City. Our guests from overseas stayed at either the Ana Mandara or the Novotel. Guests from other Vietnamese towns stayed in various local hotels. We invited about 300 people and estimated the number of people that would attend and found we were very accurate with our predictions.

GETTING THE LOOK

We had traditional Vietnamese costumes (Ao Dai) for the

Ly and Andy’s traditional Vietnamese nuptials

www.BridesAbroad.tv 53

REAL WEDDINGS ceremony (including entire bridal party). We wore western suits and white evening gown for Friday night banquet. For the Saturday party at Ana Mandara I wore a white Vietnamese ao dai and Andy wore a suit, we later changed into more relaxed attire; I chose a short sparkly white dress and Andy wore suit shorts with vest. Most of our attire was tailored. We bought the material from local markets and had them made up by a local seamstress who was a friend of our landlady. It was very inexpensive. Our main accessories were traditional Vietnamese conical hats that we gave to all the guests at the Saturday party at Ana Mandara, however during the ceremony, the mothers from both families give earrings and necklaces to the bride. I had my hair and makeup done at a local hairdressers.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW We didn't incorporate this tradition into the Vietnamese ceremony.

THE DETAILS

Other than the traditional Vietnamese component, we didn't really have a theme for our wedding. We kept it fairly casual. Even when it came to choosing the flowers, we only chose the colour of the arrangement. The flowers weren't too important for us. We had a cup cake tower. The top cake was a mud cake that we used for my mum and Andy's birthday, which was the following day. Andy had been given the recipe from a friend.

THE CEREMONY

Traditionally, Vietnamese weddings take place at the bride's home. We followed with tradition. The ceremony lasted about 40 mins. Weddings are normally done by the family. Our ceremony included the presentation of families, prayers for deceased grandparents, exchange of jewellery and money, food gifts and, of course, the exchange of rings.

54 www.BridesAbroad.tv

REAL WEDDINGS THE RECEPTION

We had two receptions. The Friday evening banquet after the morning ceremony was held at Michelia Hotel for all the family, friends and neighbours. Traditionally, this banquet has some rather tacky aspects to it (karaoke, Champagne fountain, wedding cake tower) but we trimmed a lot of it out to save money for the more intimate party the following night (on Saturday). We had one of the standard set menus, duck, prawns, beef and flan. We had the Saturday party at Ana Mandara for family and close friends, which was held on the beach near the beach pool. For Saturday evening we had a wonderful buffet, which included BBQ baby pig and meats, seafood, salads, desserts and cocktails.

“Funniest memories are of our friends using local methods to salute each other when drinking, which got louder & louder.” PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES

Dep Studio did our photos. The photographer was in modelling previously and we liked his style. We didn't arrange a video. We have too many good photos to say any one is our favourite. But, we really like our group photo at Ana Mandara, the family photos and also an evening photo that one of our friends took at Ana Mandara. We simply love seeing everyone having a good time.

MAGIC MOMENTS

Funniest memories are of our friends using local methods to salute each other when drinking, which got louder and louder as the weekend rolled on. We had a cup cake eating competition at one stage too.

ON BUDGET?

The wedding cost around £16,000, including all the clothing (£600) travel (£435), honeymoon (£2,700), rings & jewellery (£4,350), stationary (£325), ceremony (£270), banquet (£2,700), Ana Manadara party (£5,000). We budgeted for £19,000 so were under by the end.

THE HONEYMOON

After the wedding we went to the Maldives for our honeymoon the week after.

REAL WEDDINGS

East meets West at Vicky and Leon’s Bali ceremony 60 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Bali Hi!

When Vicky Raffan, a radiographer from Glasgow, tied the knot with partner Leon Georgonikos, a teacher from the same Scottish city, they chose beautiful Bali as the dream location for their wedding ceremony FINDING 'THE ONE'

Leon and I met through friends whilst at university in Glasgow and have been inseparable ever since. We had an instant attraction and connection over our love of music and travelling.

THE PROPOSAL

Leon proposed at the edge of the Grand Canyon during an American road trip holiday. We were taking pictures of us looking over the Colorado River when he produced a 'dummy' diamond ring and asked if I'd like to be Mrs Georgonikos. On the four-hour drive from Las Vegas to the Canyon that morning he hadn't let it slip once – I was so surprised. I had to take a step away from the edge! The next day we hit Tiffany & Co to choose the real engagement ring together.

LOCATION, LOCATION

We always wanted a small, intimate wedding and after falling in love with the Far East when we got stuck there for a month by the infamous volcano in 2010, we vowed to return there to get married one day. There are many beautiful places in the Far East but Bali just stood out for both of us.

THE PLANNING

Once we decided on our Bali wedding and honeymoon locations, we contacted Nicola Searle, a wedding specialist at Tropical Sky, who arranged absolutely everything for us www.BridesAbroad.tv 61

REAL WEDDINGS from start to finish. She did an amazing job and made our wedding totally stressfree. Tropical Sky arranged everything perfectly, keeping us right with all our legal documents and requirements for getting married in Bali. We chose to have a romantic wedding with just the two of us and arranged to have a wedding cerebration for friends and family in Glasgow on our return to bring all our Scottish and Greek families together.

GETTING THE LOOK

My wedding dress was the Adelaide dress from Maggie Sottero. I loved the pearl and Swarovski crystal embellishment on the corset and the beautiful train. I wore a side tiara with diamantes, which glistened in the sun, lovely jewellery from Pilgrim and ivory, open toe satin shoes. My hair was styled by Jerry at the hotel salon; he was brilliant and I was so happy with the result.

GROOMED TO PERFECTION

Leon had a kilt made for him by Slanj in Glasgow. He chose the Scotland Forever tartan since there is no Georgonikos tartan.

THE DETAILS

My bouquet comprised white frangipani flowers and violet Singapore orchids and Leon's buttonhole was a single Singapore orchid.

62 www.BridesAbroad.tv

THE CEREMONY

Our ceremony took place at the beachfront wedding bale at the Nusa Dua Resort & Spa just before sunset – we had a religious ceremony conducted by a pastor of the Balinese Church, followed by a civil ceremony, which lasted an hour. We had a procession from our room to the ceremony venue with Balinese bridesmaids and musicians and traditional Balinese Rhindik music during the ceremony.

REAL WEDDINGS THE RECEPTION

That evening we had a candlelit sixcourse traditional Balinese meal with Champagne in the wedding bale on the beach with our own private butler in attendance. Our cake was a strawberry cream sponge, decorated with a tower of frangipani flowers. Before going for our celebration meal, Leon played Foo Fighters Everlong in our room, and we had our First Dance. We had this again in Glasgow in front of our guests.

MAGIC MEMORIES

The wedding coordinator, Santika, from Bali Tours and Travel & the hotel coordinator, Dwi, did an amazing job

We always wanted a small, intimate wedding and after falling in love with the Far East when we got stuck there for a month by the infamous volcano in 2010, we vowed to return there to get married one day.

and made sure there were no problems. The whole day was so special from start to finish and we enjoyed every minute of it. We had two photographers as part of the wedding package. Our photos, with the clear blue sky and stunning sea view in the background, summed up how happy and relaxed we were.

THE HONEYMOON

We spent a few days after the wedding in a private villa in another area of Bali, followed by two days in Singapore and two days in Kuala Lumpur. Finally we spent a week in Langawi staying in a rainforest chalet with friendly dusky leaf monkeys as our neighbours.

ON BUDGET

We set a target and thanks to Tropical Sky's perfect planning, we met this.

Algarve “I do in the

Portugal's sunshine coast

Bright Mediterranean sunlight, vibrant colours and breathtaking scenery make Portugal's Algarve the perfect choice for a short-haul wedding destination 68 www.BridesAbroad.tv

With beautiful golden sandy beaches framed by jagged limestone rocks and cliffs, the stunning coast of the Algarve is a world-class location for beach-side weddings and honeymoons. From pretty sheltered coves to wide stretches of pristine sand, the Algarve has it all. However this region of Portugal has so much more to offer than simply sun, sea and sand. Situated at the southern tip of Portugal, the 200-kilometre Algarve coastline blends a rich mixture of year-round warm Mediterranean sunshine, beautiful scenery, history, culture, lush emerald golf courses, and an extensive choice of luxury hotels and villas that are ideal venues to host your 'big day' or honeymoon – or both.

civil wedding ceremony to a bespoke blessing performed by a Celebrant or a religious Catholic or Protestant ceremony.

The Algarve is a golfer's heaven with over 30 challenging golf courses, in fact, golf enthusiasts can say “I do” at luxury golf resort hotels in the Algarve that cater for destination weddings, which is especially ideal for golf-loving guests. Away from the coast, meander through traditional whitewashed villages and explore their enchanting narrow streets and winding alleys while you shop for locally hand-crafted souvenirs and sample the regions delicious wines and cuisine, prepared with fresh local ingredients. As night falls you can stroll along the marinas and sample the Algarve's lively nightlife in bars, discos and casinos. There's plenty of outdoor sports and activities to keep you occupied too – including watersports, tennis and cycling along coastal paths. The lesser-known wild, western Algarve embraces the power of the Atlantic – it's ideal for surfers as well as for spotting dolphins, bird watching and rambling around nature trails. Whichever part of the Algarve you choose, it will most definitely have all the ingredients for an unforgettable wedding or honeymoon – from the warm welcome you will receive and stunning scenery to excellent local wines – at superb prices – and delicious food, the Algarve has got it all!

The simplest way to marry in the Algarve is for couples to have a civil wedding at their local UK Registry Office, followed by a blessing or religious wedding in the Algarve. Couples no longer need to have a 30-day residency requirement, making it easier for non-residents to have a legally binding Civil Ceremony in Portugal. Civil weddings can take place at many venues, from a Registry Office to a beach ceremony.

Civil Ceremony

Catholic wedding ceremonies are always celebrated in churches rather than hotel and beach venues, and because Portugal is a very religious country it has an abundance of beautiful churches in the Algarve, from small and simple to grand and richly decorated in religious iconography. There are also plenty of English-speaking priests in the area.

Church of England Ceremony If you want a C of E ceremony in Portugal, there are several English-speaking Vicars in the Algarve who are able to perform ceremonies in the Catholic churches, with prior permission from the Catholic Priest. They can personalize the ceremony to your requirements and are also able to perform weddings at other selected locations.

Blessings Like a Civil Wedding, a Blessing Ceremony can take place anywhere in the Algarve in your dream location. This ceremony is ideal for couples wanting to renew their vows. However, a blessing ceremony does not form a legal marriage contract and is purely symbolic, so if you want to become legally married you will also need a Civil ceremony at your local Registry Office in the UK.

REAL WEDDINGS

Making sweet music in

70 www.BridesAbroad.tv

June and Rob’s glamorous Mediterranean wedding

T

he Scottish and Irish are renowned for their love of music, so its hardly surprising that Irish makeup artist June Kelly met her Scottish husband-to-be, Rob Bain, an IT manager at a music festival. The pair, who live now in London, soon realised they were in perfect harmony and chose the Algarve to exchange their marriage vows.

FINDING 'THE ONE'

We met at a music festival in Clapham called SW4, and it was love at first sight!

THE PROPOSAL

Rob proposed to me on a house boat cruise in Goa, India. He proposed in the standard way, down on one knee in our room. I had no idea he was going to propose, but he had already gone to Ireland and asked my mum and dad for my hand in marriage, which was such a lovely thing to do.

LOCATION, LOCATION

We chose the Algarve in Portugal for our destination wedding. My parents have a villa there and we love spending time there. We both love sunshine so it was an easy decesion. When we found Villa Vita Parc it blew us away. It's a very magical place. The Vila Vita Parc resort has a Morrocan/Asian meets traditional Portuguese style. The grounds are out of this world – it nestles in 56 acres of landscaped gardens along the coast.

REAL WEDDINGS

THE PLANNING

We booked the wonderful Karen from Algarve Dream Weddings to plan our big day. She was a Godsend.

THE GUESTS

We had 90 guests at our wedding. They stayed all over the area – in private villas and hotels. Most people accepted our invitation, and no one was put off having to travel, in fact, most of our guests made a hoilday out of it .

GETTING THE LOOK

My wedding dress was by Amanda Wakley, an amazing English designer. It was love at first sight and it matched the venue – Rob couldn't understand what I meant when I said it to him as we walked into Vila Vita Parc – I really felt that my dress was made to be worn in the sunshine of the Algarve. The copper beading on the front really fitted well with the style of the resort. I wore nude Gucci

shoes and had orchids in my hair with a Cathedral veil. My best friend, Lynda Darragh, is a celebrity make-up artist and I asked her to do both my hair and make-up. I loved it. It was perfect. We've known each other since we were kids so she knew just what I'd like.

www.durrahjewellery.com. I gave my mum a gold one and each one of my seven bridesmaids a sliver one. I wore a rose, a gold and sliver one on my right hand and still do to this day.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW

We didn't have any particular theme – the venue Vila Vita Parc was so stunning it didn't need anything else. For my flowers I had roses and the bridal party had a simple bouquet of babies’ breath and a few colourful flowers. My sisters and I made them the night before the wedding and my bridal party did the flowers for the church the day before. Our beautiful cake was from the Vila Vita patisserie.

My Something Blue were my bridesmaids’ dresses; Something Old was a braclet from my mum; Something Borrowed was my veil from my lovely sister-in-law, Dervila.

GROOM & BRIDESMAIDS

Rob’s family are Scottish so he wore a Kilt along with his seven groomsmen. My seven bridesmaids wore sky blue Grecian dresses from an American company called Light in the Box. They looked stunning – they also matched the sky on our wedding day which was so pretty! I gave my mum and bridesmaids a gift of a beautiful simple ring from funky new jewellery designer Durrah

THE DETAILS

THE CEREMONY

Our wedding ceremony took place at a stunning local Catholic church in a little fishing village called Ferragudo and it laster roughly an hour. We flew out our local priest and family friend from Ireland, Father Clavin. Both my Mum and Dad gave me away. They both brought me into this world so it only felt right they give me

REAL WEDDINGS away. The local Portugese priest who was in attendance made us hug at the end of the ceremony which made us all laugh.

THE RECEPTION

The reception was held at Vila Vita Parc Resort. We had soup to start, followed by a scallop risotto followed by either beef or fish. Then lemon tart for dessert. I sent an image of the flowers I wanted to the in-house florist at Vila Vita and they simply copied them. We had lots of candles on the table as the wedding dinner was outside on the terrace – it set a wonderful mood of soft lighting. Our First Dance was Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol. For our entertainment we had a traditional Irish band called Synergy, who were amazing – they did a wicked version of Chasing Cars. When they finished we plugged-in ipods instead of having a DJ. All our friends are really into music so we asked a few of them to do one-hour long play lists from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and tunes from today.

him. I actually cried going through our wedding pictures. He has an outstanding ability to capture people, and has given us family memories we will have for the rest of our lives. He is the most wonderful man and so funny, he made Rob and I and all our guests feel so relaxed. My favourite photo is one of my mum and dad – I just love it and will cherish it forever.

PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES

MAGIC MOMENTS

We had the most amazing photographer. His name is Terry Whitaker, a fashion photographer we know through friends. His work is stunning so I just had to have

My best memory is of mum and dad walking me down the aisle and Rob standing there waiting for me, looking out- of-this-world handsome.

ON BUDGET?

It was within our budget.

THE HONEYMOON

We stayed at Vila Vita Parc for a week after the wedding. The honeymoon suite is unbelieveable. All our friends and family shared our minimoon, which was brilliant as we all sat around the pool reminising about the wedding day and night. We're going on our megamoon this July to New York and LA for two weeks.

POP the Question

The facts… Where can I get married abroad?

Where do you fancy? You name it, and you can probably get married there. Weddings can be arranged in more than 30 countries around the world, and in many different settings.

How much will it cost?

Tour operators Kuoni are destination wedding specialists. They say the average price of their destination weddings, including honeymoon, is less than £3,000 – a small cost compared to the average UK wedding! Prices vary considerably for a wedding or vow renewal package; this is paid as a supplement to your holiday package price. Some resorts offer free wedding packages, so bargain hunters should check their options with tour operators.

The legals… Will our marriage be legally recognised in the UK?

Yes. Your wedding will be registered in the country it takes place in and is completely legal under British law, so you don't need to register your marriage again when you get home.

What are the legal requirements?

They vary from country to country, but in general you must be over 20 years of age and need your British passports, original copies of your Birth Certificates and documentation regarding any previous marriages or if you are widowed or divorced. Some countries have additional costs for legalisation and translation of documents. If you book through a tour operator, such as Kuoni, Thomas Cook, Turquoise and Sandals, your dedicated wedding team will give you full details at the time of your booking.

Are there residency restrictions in some countries?

Yes, so you need to check residency restrictions with your tour operator or wedding planner. The most difficult countries are Spain (40 days residency), France (40 days) and Australia (one month and one day); however, there are no restrictions in Antigua, Jamaica or Las Vegas.

What name should I travel under?

We asked dedicated wedding planners to give us a selection of their most frequently asked questions… 90 www.BridesAbroad.tv

If you are getting hitched abroad you can't change the name on your passport until you return home. You must travel in your maiden name and your return airline tickets need to be in the same name as your passport or they will not be valid. Of course you can change your passport to your married name once you are back home in the UK and are in possession of your Marriage Certificate.

When will I receive my Marriage Certificate?

It will either be handed to you at the resort or sent via registered post to your home address. Don't panic if it takes a while to arrive – this is normal, especially if you marry in Jamaica where it can take up to 12 months! If you get married in certain countries, like Mexico and the Dominican Republic it will need to be translated, which will cause extra delay. For more information visit direct.gov.uk and search under passports.

The ceremony… Can we invite guests to our wedding?

Of course! Some hotels even offer reduced rate weddings for more than four guests. Remember to order extras for your guests, such as more wine, a larger wedding cake or extra buttonholes. If the wedding couple is staying at an All Inclusive resort, they will need to buy oneday passes for guests staying at other hotels, and in adults-only resorts you will need to ask special permission for children to attend the wedding on a day pass. All this can be organised at the resort by your wedding planner.

When do I meet the resort's wedding planner?

One to three days after your arrival at your resort. Your wedding planner will sort out the fine details of your wedding, from Champagne to the icing on your cake, and check your documentation so that you can relax as the arrangements are done on your behalf. Once the local registrar is happy your paperwork is in order, your wedding planner will give you a date and time for the ceremony and send out invitations to your guests.

Where will our ceremony take place?

The hotel wedding planner will show you the locations to choose from – usually in the gardens of your hotel, or in a decorated wedding pavilion. If you are marrying in Europe you may choose to exchange vows in the local church or town hall, or in Las Vegas, a wedding chapel. The hotel wedding co-ordinator will show you the locations to choose from. It's unusual to have a ceremony on the beach, but many couples take beach photographs after the ceremony.

Who will be at the ceremony?

Most overseas weddings are civil ceremonies, in the style of registry office services, unless a religious ceremony has

been pre-arranged. The ceremony will be conducted by a Judge, Celebrant, Minister or Registrar. You will need two to four witnesses, who could be anyone from your wedding guests to people you have met on the beach the previous day. Your wedding planner will be there too, to ensure your day goes without a hitch.

The important bits… How should I transport my wedding dress?

We recommend wedding outfits should be packed in a hard suitcase or strong box, as they will be placed in the hold of the plane. It might be an idea to contact your airline for more information. Generally, there is no extra baggage allowance for wedding outfits. You can also take out extra insurance to cover the transportation of your dress.

Can I choose my flowers?

choice of themed weddings, which feature colour-co-ordinated cakes to match the chosen wedding palette.

Who will take care of my hair and makeup?

Every bride wants to look her best and fortunately many hotels have hair and beauty services with makeup artists on hand. Even if they don't, your wedding planner can arrange for experts to come to the hotel.

Can I arrange for a good wedding photographer?

At your pre-wedding meeting, your wedding planner will show you examples of local photographers work so that you can choose the style that suits you best. Your video can also be arranged when you get to the resort. Photographer and DVD are usually at extra cost; they are rarely included in your wedding package.

Absolutely! At the resort, your wedding planner will show you photos of bouquets for you to make a selection. Your wedding bouquet and his buttonhole are included in your wedding package, but extra flowers and buttonholes can be ordered for guests and bridesmaids.

What about the wedding dinner?

What about the music?

We want friends and family at the ceremony but can we be alone for our honeymoon?

You can request whatever music you prefer and it will be arranged for you – from a DJ playing your favourite songs to calypso bands. If you prefer you can pack a CD with your chosen musical selection, which can be played at your wedding.

Will I have a cake?

A wedding cake is included in wedding packages; this is usually a sponge cake with white icing. You can add your own decorations, and even arrange for an upgraded cake. Sandals Resorts offer a

If you have a group of guests at your wedding, a gala dinner is usually arranged as part of your wedding package. If it's just the two of you, your wedding planner will arrange a candle-lit dinner for two in a romantic location.

Absolutely. Simply ask your guests to stay at a different hotel close by, or transfer to another hotel after the ceremony.

Ask the planners!

We asked Lisa Burton of The Bridal Consultant wedding planning service to answer your burning questions on planning a wedding abroad

I want to go vintage!

Will they be bored?

Will we be legal?

I'm getting married in Italy and have chosen a vintage theme for my wedding. I want to incorporate my dress into the theme, but most dresses I have looked at are ball gown style or a heavy material. How can I do this and still feel comfortable in the hot temperatures? Colleen, Cheltenham

I have invited 10 children to my beach wedding and want to make sure they don't get bored and restless throughout the day. Do you have any nice ideas for favours or activities that will keep them entertained? Sophie, Wrexham

I've chosen to get married abroad in Greece next year; however I am concerned about my legal paperwork. It is very important to me and my partner that our wedding ceremony is all legal and we are 'officially' married on the day of our wedding. How can I make sure this will all be legal? Jasmine, London

Hi Colleen It's very important with a wedding abroad, that your dress keeps you cool and comfortable throughout the day. Choosing a light whimsical style dress in lace or tulle will do just that and has a real vintage feel. Dress designers Anna Campbell and Jenny Packham are just two of many whom design vintage inspired gowns embellished with stunning beading and sequin detail, and Monsoon also have a gorgeous range of light, whimsical style dresses perfect for a wedding abroad. Follow these steps: 1. Research wedding dress designers who make vintage inspired gowns that you like 2. Find out which shops stock their dresses in your area, 3. Before making an appointment call the shop and ask what the appointment system is like… then go and try some on!

Hi Sophie A good place to start is making a visual board on the photo-sharing website, Pinterest. This website is a great platform to search for ideas and inspiration and collect them all in one place to refer back to. One great idea is to create your own activity packs filled with items such as play dough, books, crayons, disposable cameras and sweets. You can tailor-make the activity pack to each child and guarantee they will be kept happy and busy all day. As an alternative you could also speak to your venue about providing a children's entertainer for the afternoon! Something like a clown act, child crèche provider or even a bouncy castle!

Contact Lisa:

Do you have any questions for Lisa Burton, The Bridal Consultant? Email your questions to: lisaburton@thebridalconsultants.com

94 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Hi Jasmine Firstly, when researching and contacting potential wedding planners make sure you ask them if they will help you with your legal paperwork. Will they charge extra fees to administer your legal paperwork or is it included in the fee you pay to them? Will they provide you with time lines and full instructions of what to do, when and where? Will they provide you with templates and help you with translations and posting documents to the right places? Most companies will include all the administration costs in their fee, however, some may charge extra so it's important to ask at the outset! If you go it alone you need to be confident in speaking to your local authorities and the authorities where you wish to marry – but I warn you, they are not the easiest people to deal with. Start well ahead by contacting the embassy where you wish to marry and researching what documents you need and what the timelines/deadlines are and then plan, plan and plan some more. Make sure you have your documents ready at least four weeks before the wedding. You need to be on the ball and make sure you check your documents very carefully as it will be too late to sort out any issues when you arrive.

Mountain High by Rail

Snuggle up in your luxury carriage and enjoy the breath-taking scenery as the train whisks you to a gorgeous mountain retreat for the honeymoon of a lifetime, says Terri Cody-Owen Why go by plane when a romantic train journey into the heart of Switzerland can be an exciting part of your honeymoon? Hop on in London in the morning, and in an adventure that takes you through two romantic cities, Paris and Zurich and incredible Alpine scenery on route, you will be in St Moritz by nightfall. The last leg of the journey, between Chur and St Moritz is absolutely breathtaking, particularly in winter, when the snow paints an incredible winter wonderland landscape. Prepare to be amazed as you travel through one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, on the Rhaetian Railway through the Albula Valley into the Engadin Valley. Many of the trains on this route

are equipped with panoramic windows for maximum vistas. The Rhaetian railway line became part of UNESCO World Heritage in 2008, which is not surprising. The awe-inspiring journey takes you through lush mountains, pine forests, snow covered valleys, pretty ski resorts, through spiral tunnels and over giddying viaducts until the train finally chugs to a halt in the tiny station at St Moritz at dusk, where chauffeurs are waiting alongside hotel limousines to transport new arrivals in the lap of luxury to their chosen hotels.

St Moritz

If you are not donning a fur hat, designer shades and carrying the very latest handbag by Chanel, Louis Vuitton or Prada you are probably underdressed in St Moritz,

which is world-renowned for its über glamour and authentic Swiss charm. Here the streets are lined with flagship stores from the world's leading fashion, jewellery and luggage designers interspersed between grand hotels of palatial proportions. St Moritz lies in the sun-blessed valley of the Engadin. Although it's predominantly a ski resort in the winter, many of its visitors are non-skiers who come to see and be seen. The biggest draw, however, remains the stunning views across the huge frozen lake and a brilliant mix of skiing to suit all standards. Over the years, the town has attracted A-lister movie stars, been a location for the Bond Movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service, hosted a couple of Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, and the Alpine Ski World Championships on several occasions. It now also stages horse racing events and polo matches on the frozen lake, and the worldrenowned annual Gourmet Festival. Not to mention the iconic Cresta Run – the white-knuckle bobsleigh ride, which is on the bucket list of many adventureseeking males. In the summer, St Moritz also boasts the Legendary Festival da Jazz and the British Classic Car Meeting – the list of entertainment is endless! However, most of the nightlife in St Moritz takes place behind the doors of the swanky 5-star hotels. Thankfully, despite its reputation as an elite destination, a stay in St Moritz doesn't have to break the bank – there are 3 and 4-star hotels, guest houses and selfcatering establishments to suit those with tighter budgets, mostly around the lake in St Moritz Bad, where some hotels cater to a mid-range clientele, though once again, everything is provided under one roof, so you don't need to go into town to find the 'action'.

Winter – skiers dream In winter, St Moritz offers excellent and varied skiing – and the slopes are not overcrowded as many visitors will be too busy shopping, celebrity spotting, dining or lounging in plush spas, leaving the excellent snow to sports enthusiasts. The resort offers three main ski areas with varying levels of difficulty – from the extensive, rolling, well-groomed Corviglia pistes to the drama of the high Corvatsch peak followed by a big vertical and the steepest slopes of the Diavolleza with its huge descent across the glacier. Of course, elite skiers can hire helicopters to fly to top and ski down the mountain thus avoiding those tiresome lifts and lengthy queuing with the hoi polloi!

The Gourmet Festival At St Moritz Gourmet Festival time, gourmands flock to the resort for the ultimate culinary experience – this annual festival has reached cult status throughout the world, when international celebrity guest chefs come to St Moritz to spoil guests for the whole week in the most beautiful hotels and event locations. The star chefs always create excitement with their incredible signature dishes and multiple Michelin stars. So if you are foodies rather than skiers, be

sure to plan your honeymoon in time for the St Moritz Gourmet Festival and book yourselves in for an absolutely delicious gastronomic treat!

Summer sensations St Moritz celebrates summer days with style, charm and cosmopolitan flair. As the snow finally melts the summer landscape turns into a blaze of colour – from the sparkling ink blue lake to the lush green mountain pastures and the multi-coloured Alpine flora. Down below on the lake, sailing boats take to the water for regattas or simply recreation, while on the mountains, hikers are lured by spectacular trails, and mountain bikers enjoy some of the best bike trails in the world. The latest craze is to explore the trails by e-bike, with an environmentally friendly electric motor to power assist your pedaling, which sounds like a wholly easier option! So take a romantic picnic into the mountains, and in the spirit of St Moritz, be sure to include a bottle of Dom Perignon!

Arosa

Why stay in one resort when you can enjoy the contrasting experience of two on your honeymoon? So take that incredible train journey back to Chur, followed by a short, equally enjoyable trip through charming mountain scenery to the picturesque village of Arosa – a lovely resort, which is totally geared to winter and summer sports and sublime spa holidays. Arosa is situated 1800 meters above sea level in a stunning location at the end of the Schanfigg Valley. The village was discovered 130 years ago as a health resort. Today it offers year-round activities and a good range of restaurants, shops and bars. What's more, during the summer and autumn season, all overnight guests can make use of the wide variety of leisure facilities free of charge, thanks to the free Arosa all-inclusive card. With guaranteed snow in the winter and 'AllInclusive' in the summer the resort is a versatile and exciting holiday paradise that

appeals to everyone including loved-up couples who will enjoy the romance of this pretty resort. OK, so Arosa doesn't have the iconic glamour of St Moritz, nor the designer shops. But it can still offer exquisite 5-star hotels as well as more pocket-friendly options. It has a beauty and style all of its own, which is just as appealing, and in a more warm and friendly ambience. It's also ideal for après ski, eating out and having fun without the pressure to dress up and pose as you would in St Moritz – here you can let your hair down and relax together!

Winter sports Arosa is popular with skiers and hikers as well as families as it also offers an abundance of easy slopes and childfriendly toboggan trails. Skiers can enjoy 225km of pistes of all levels of difficulties in two valleys with three sun facing hills. This year, the connecting railway between Arosa and Lenzerheide is in operation, which means that the ski area in Arosa has now doubled in size with two winter sports areas forming the new Arosa Lenzerheide ski area.

Summer in the Alps During the summer months you can discover Arosa's numerous hiking paths, Europe's highest golf course, tennis courts and much more. The wellness areas in various hotels or the sun terraces of the mountain and village restaurants are perfect for those who prefer a more relaxing honeymoon – bright sunshine and healthy mountain air included!

Badrutt's Palace Fancy a honeymoon hobnobbing with the world's elite? St Moritz's iconic Alpine hotel is the place to see and be seen

T

he sheer glamour of St Moritz is personified at Badrutt's Palace, the famous landmark hotel, which stands majestically at the heart of Europe's most opulent ski resort overlooking Lake St Moritz and the mountains beyond.

To stay at Badrutt's Palace is the privilege of a chosen few, so it's perfect for honeymooners looking to indulge in sophistication as they begin married life together. But be warned, this level of luxury doesn't come cheap, and nor should it – unless you are a member of high society, it's a once in a lifetime experience! For more than a century sophisticated travellers have flocked to Badrutt's Palace Hotel, seeking the finest in service and hospitality in a historical atmosphere. The Grand Dame of St Moritz has undergone an extensive restoration programme, taking special care to preserve 102 www.BridesAbroad.tv

the unique character of the hotel, whilst incorporating state-of-the-art facilities and a sublimely relaxing spa.

Your honeymoon If you needed proof of 'how the other half live,' make a request to be picked up from St Moritz railway station, a short drive away, and don't be surprised if a gleaming black Rolls Royce limousine arrives to whisk you smoothly to the grand entrance hall - and in typical Badrutts style, not just any Rolls Royce, but the Phantom limousine formerly owned by HM The Queen! This should surely set the tone of your luxuriously romantic stay. A swarm of immaculate, uniformed porters will welcome you and ensure that your luggage is transferred to your impressive state room or spacious suite where you will be met with spectacular views across the lake to the Alps, which in winter depicts a winter wonderland of snow and ice, whilst in summer it’s a colourful blend of the inky blue lake against a backdrop of lush green Alpine landscape. All the rooms are furnished individually, each with its own charm, grandeur and character. Personal butler

service in all rooms and suites will ensure that your stay is perfect, but be ready with a fistfull of swiss francs for tips and gratuities.

Delicious cuisine Badrutt's Palace is a gourmet's dream destination with world-class cuisine served in enchanting surroundings. You can choose between exclusive French and international delights at the elegant Le Restaurant or, during the winter season, if you fancy something more exotic, you can dine Japanese-Peruvian style at NOBU@ Badrutt's Palace. La Diala is the latest of Badrutt's Palace restaurants, situated within the spa it offers healthy salads and light Mediterranean cuisine. After a day on the ski slopes you can enjoy a delicious Afternoon Tea or Champagne cocktails and caviar with live piano accompaniment in Le Grand Hall, the legendary lobby of the hotel, which is affectionately known as the 'Living room of St Moritz'. Then start your evening with an aperitif or one of the barman's exquisite creations in front of an open fire in the Renaissance Bar – Davidoff Lounge. A visit to the legendary King's Club nightclub is a 'must' to round off the day – you will rub shoulders with celebrities and experience the real glamour of St Moritz in the nightclub that knows no curfew.

Gourmet Festival During the Gourmet Festival, an event which takes place annually in St Moritz, Badrutt's Palace is among a selected group of the resort's finest hotels which play host to celebrated guest chefs from around the world. In January 2014 Wolfgang Puck demonstrated the culinary skills for which he is world-renowned, at a Gourmet Gala Dinner at Badrutt's Palace. Puck belongs to the culinary elite of the USA and is considered the ingenious creator of Californian haute cuisine, which combines classical French cookery techniques with Asian and modern Californian cuisine. If you can combine your honeymoon with next year's Gourmet Festival your taste buds will be in for a treat – even though your wallet will be in for a bashing!!

and flooding the entire area with natural light. Luxury massages, facials, wraps and spa rituals are administered in beautifully appointed treatment rooms and a Wet Zone provides further relaxation with several saunas and an outdoor hydrotherapy pool. A Fitness Centre offers the latest exercise equipment, and there are tennis courts in summer and a natural ice rink in winter.

The Great Outdoors Guests can enjoy a host of outdoor pursuits all year round with a Ski Pass included with your accommodation, a ski shop is located within the hotel and lifts to the ski slopes are just a short walk away. Exploring the resort of St Moritz is a real treat, with world-class shopping on the doorstep – the hotel is flanked by designer stores, including Louis Vuitton; Gucci, Mont Clair and Yves St Laurent, so feast your eyes!

Licensed to wed If you are looking for a world-class venue to say “I do” then Badrutt's Palace has plenty to offer brides and grooms. Not only is it one of the most elegant locations for glamorous Alpine weddings, but it is also perfect for sophisticated stag and hen parties. Brides-to-be can enjoy blissful pampering with the girls in the Palace Wellness Spa, while husbands-tobe are offered a stag package that is totally unique, where the future groom's marriage skills will be put to the test with The License to Wed package – this requires him to pass a washing and ironing test under the watchful eye of Laundry Supervisor Sandra, before Butler Josef examines the bachelor's aptitude as a true gentleman and Executive Chef Mauro Taufer savours his skills in preparing a Sunday meal for the in-laws. If he passes all tests then he and his friends will be driven by Rolls-Royce to the cablecar of Muottas Muragl where the group will experience the last wild adventure by toboggan before the bachelor is given his License to Wed. The License to Wed package is based on a minimum of four people and comprises two nights' B&B stay in Badrutt's Palace in a Superior Single Room priced from £995 and from £1,645 in a Superior Double Room.

Palace Wellness After a long day skiing in winter or a mountain hiking tour in summer, sublime relaxation is assured at Palace Wellness, a multi-faceted centre that is designed to enhance your state of wellbeing, simultaneously offering tranquillity and stimulation. The pool area has floor-to-ceiling glass windows, offering stunning panoramic views across the lake

Paris City of Love

The world has enjoyed a love affair with Paris for centuries – it's where history's famous artists and poets came to be inspired and you too will be truly enchanted if you choose a romantic mini-moon in Paris, says Terri Cody-Owen 108 www.BridesAbroad.tv

Not all newlyweds can take time out of their busy lives straight after their wedding for a two or three week honeymoon at a long-haul destination because of work or family commitments. This is one of the reasons why mini-moons – short breaks at nearby destinations – are becoming a popular alternative as couples postpone their far-flung 'honeymoon' until a more convenient time. As far as mini-moons go, a city break in Paris is an ideal choice – it is, after all, one of the most romantic destinations in the world and has much to offer honeymooning couples. The great thing about Paris is that it is so geographically close that you can be there within an hour from most UK airports. However, by far the most relaxing way to travel to Paris is by Eurostar from central London or Ashford in Kent on a train journey that takes less than two hours! Indeed, it's such an easy hop that you will hardly have chance to indulge in a continental breakfast on the comfortable, super-fast train before it's time to disembark at Gare du Nord station in the city centre. Once in Paris, you enter a world of chic sophistication and elegant charm. France's capital city has everything on tap for a magical honeymoon with a choice of endless entertainment, sightseeing and dining possibilities to suit every taste and budget. No wonder celebrities and fashionistas flock to Paris to see and be seen. It's also a firm favourite destination for shopaholics, tourists and romantic couples.

Discovering Paris Feast your eyes on the city’s main attractions, indulge in the delicious French cuisine and allow yourselves to become tourists. The best way to do this is to purchase a Paris Visite Pass – a special travel pass that entitles you to unlimited travel on public transport including metro, buses, RER and Transilien SNCF trains. These can be purchased from all stations. When my husband and I arrived in Paris in late January for a romantic getaway, the first thing we did was take the Metro from our magnificent hotel, Fouquet's Barriere, on the Champs Elysee to Place de Concorde, where we took a ride on the FerrisWheel that offered an awesome birds-eye view of the city, taking in the

Champs Elysee, Arc de Triumph and River Seine, which winds its way through Paris and boasts some of the most famous landmarks along its banks. Next we took a stroll along the sweeping Champs Elysee to hit the designer shops, including Versace, Kenzo and Chanel. Another metro ride took us to the main shopping streets of Paris where the department stores are situated, including the famous Galleries Lafayette – the world's leading department store. There's a good reason why Paris is so renowned for its fashions, so be sure to take plenty of spending money, you are bound to be tempted! You will also notice that most Parisians have an incredibly stylish dress sense, so 'people-watching' is a fascinating pastime. The best way to 'people watch' in Paris is to find one of the famous pavement cafes or patisseries for lunch al-fresco and take a table www.BridesAbroad.tv 109

overlooking the street. An espresso and irresistible Mille Feuille French pastry is highly recommended! Or better still, a glass of chilled French wine and fresh baguette with a delicious filling. If you are planning on seeing the Eiffel Tower – and you most definitely MUST – the best time to visit is at night, when it is illuminated in glorious technicolour with a stunning light display. It is possible to take a trip to the top of the tower in a lift – which promises awesome views and the ultimate romantic memories, but be prepared to queue!

Become a culture vulture Paris's rich culture and history can be seen in the grandeur of its architecture and in the museums, galleries, monuments and spectacular cathedrals and churches – the most famous, of course, being Notre Dame. And no trip to Paris is worth its salt without a visit to the Musee du Louvre, a huge art gallery housed in an old Parisian palace. It holds a collection of nearly 400,000 items of art and historical objects in its permanent collection, which includes the Mona Lisa and Venus De Milo – however, don't make the mistake of visiting on a Tuesday when it is closed all day. A short walk from the Louvre took us to Pont de l'Archeveche (better known as Lovelock Bridge) across the Seine. It's a truly moving sight to see the colourful locks with names or initials of lovers who have padlocked the symbol of their love to the bridge – tourists can buy the locks from street vendors – although the task of finding an empty spot to place your lock can prove very difficult as it is now filled to the brim.

Getting there

We travelled to Paris Gare du Nord by Eurostar, picking the train up at Ashford in Kent. Eurostar trains run from London and Ashford to Paris at frequent intervals daily, Fares start at £69 Standard Class return per person. Book through Voyages-SNCF on: 0844 848 5848 or www.voyages-sncf.com

Cruise along the Seine If you have an afternoon to spare, one of the most romantic ways to take in the sights along the River Seine is on a leisurely river cruise. Sightseeing cruises cost 12.50 euros and the trip takes around 1hr 10 mins. Alternatively, you can treat yourselves to a delicious lunch on board for 55 euros, and be sure to have your camera ready as you cruise past Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, The Louvre and many of Paris's landmarks during the guided tour. For something extra special you can take a dinner cruise at nightfall for 140 euros and see Paris's city lights illuminating the historical and iconic sights. However, honeymooners can really push the boat out with the Romantic Cruise, which includes a chauffeur driven car to drive you to the boat and seats at the Captain's table where roses and Champagne await and violin music serenades you throughout the cruise. Price 650 euros per couple.

Wining, dining and cabaret At night, Paris really comes alive, and you can sample the worldrenowned French cuisine at a choice of restaurants, cafes and bars to suit all pockets and tastes. However, for a special honeymoon lunch or dinner, hotel restaurants are the perfect place as they often combine haute cuisine with magnificent interior decor. One of Paris's hotspots for French gastronomy is the Fouquet's Barriere brasserie, at the hotel where we were staying on the Champs Elysee – it's one of Paris's most popular places to dine in style, and is the favourite haunt of movie stars and celebrities, including Beyonce and Jay Z – and it's easy to see why, the food is absolutely delicious, especially when washed down with a bottle of exquisite French wine. First dinner, then the show – and there are plenty of cabarets, concerts and gigs to choose from, including the notorious Moulin Rouge, the most celebrated cabaret in the world, which was immortalized by Toulouse Lautrec and the legendary cabaret Lido de Paris.

Honeymoon like a star! The beautiful Fouquet's Barrière is one of Paris's most iconic hotels and has been a favourite haunt of the rich and famous since its legendary Fouquet's Brasserie opened its doors in 1899 to a celebrity following. Now you can feel like a film star too if you book the hotel's signature Lights, Camera, Action! Honeymoon Package, which has been designed to make couples feel like Alisters as they are captured on film savouring the very best that Paris has to offer. The luxurious hotel, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, is part of the Lucien Barrière Group and is the only 5-star hotel still owned by a French family. It enjoys a prime position at the junction between Avenue George V and the Champs Elysées. The

hotel absolutely oozes sophistication and class with an intoxicating blend of traditional art-de-vivre and 21st Century modernity. The hotel is a quintessential part of Parisian life and has always been an international meeting place for the elite of stage and screen – including Orson Welles, Liza Minnelli, Quentin Tarantino, Jodie Forster, and Beyonce Knowles. It has also provided the backdrop for the filming of interviews, documentaries and movie scenes. Fouquet's Barrière offers luxurious accommodation in a choice of 81 spacious rooms and 33 suites, with a sumptuous spa,

Michelin starred restaurant, four further restaurants and bars, magnificent private garden, attentive staff and personal Butler service. It boasts a distinctive interior design with marble floor and an amazing diamond rivière surrounding the reception desk. Drama is created with alcoves hiding behind golden sheer curtains, surrounded by oversized mirrors and amber chandeliers, and a display of black and white photographs portrays Barrière family members as well as film stars and celebrities that have been guests. Its location on the Champs Elysées close to the Arc de Triomph, means that guests can stroll down the world's most famous treelined avenue and explore its prestigious flagship designer stores and entertainment venues.

The Lights, Camera, Action! Honeymoon Package The hotel's history is so intertwined with that of the international film industry, that it seems only fitting that guests should be offered a chance to experience being stars in their own movie. The Lights, Camera, Action! package gives couples the unique opportunity to spend four hours roaming the city with a professional camera crew filming them. A personal chauffeur will accompany you throughout the filming. The resulting footage will be an amazing souvenir of your honeymoon in Paris. The Lights, Camera, Action! Honeymoon Package includes: two-nights B&B accommodation in a luxurious room or suite; four consecutive hours of filming with a professional crew and chauffeur; complimentary drinks from the minibar; complimentary WIFI and U Spa access. Price for the package 2540 Euros

Star-studded fine dining Fouquet's Barrière is particularly noted for its fine dining. The famous Michelin-starred Le Diane Restaurant offers a sophisticated gourmet menu created by the talented chef Jean-Yves Leuranguer, in a cool, discreet atmosphere. In contrast to the intimacy of Le Diane, the traditional Fouquet's restaurant is a Paris landmark with its ties to the world of cinema. The renowned restaurant has embodied the Parisian 'luxury brasserie' spirit with its bright red canopy overhanging the Champs Elysées, its warm and friendly ambience, its interior decor with gold chandeliers, red velvet studded chairs and its absolutely delicious French cuisine. Celebrity portrait photos embellish the walls and each year the restaurant hosts the annual César Gala Dinner – French equivalent of the American Oscars. Le Petite Maison de Nicole is the hotel's traditional Mediterranean style restaurant, which serves festive dining with live music and is the Parisian sister of its namesake restaurant in Nice. For tourists strolling down the Champs Elysées, the Café Fouquet offers its landmark terrace to welcome a constant flow of diners and serves lighter options throughout the day. The hotel's elegant Galerie Joy and Le Lucien Bar is a hot spot for cocktails, light lunches, afternoon tea and late night drinks in a trendy, musical ambience. If you are planning a glamorous wedding in Paris, look no further. Fouquet's Barrière offers exceptional venues for your Big Day with made-to-measure services and delicious cuisine. The hotel's events team will suggest locations within the hotel in line with the scale of your wedding.

Sublime U-Spa Barrière In sharp contrast to the energy of Paris, the U Spa is the place to relax, unwind and rejuvenate mind and body in a sanctuary of calm. The large indoor pool offers massaging aqua jets. A full range of international pampering massages, Ayurvedic, Balinese and Polynesian rituals and beauty treatments are administered in eight treatment rooms, plus two hammams, sauna and relaxation rooms. There is also a fitness gym for those seeking active rest.

Brides are led to the groom by a troop of Samoan warriors and serenaded in song or backed by the fierce beats of the Samoan drums. While none of these cultural touches are mandatory for your destination wedding, they will provide a unique touch to your tropical nuptials.

CITY GLITZ & ISLAND PARADISE When Simon and Kelly Palfreyman chose a two-stop honeymoon, they decided to contrast the glitzy razamataz of Dubai with the tranquil serenity of the Maldives for the trip of a lifetime

126 www.BridesAbroad.tv

The beautiful islands of the Maldives are a number one honeymoon destination for couples seeking romantic paradise. However, if you want to add a glamorous city element to your most important holiday together, then do as the Palfreman's did and enjoy an adventurous stop-over in Dubai en-route to or from the Indian Ocean. Like Simon and Kelly, you too will enjoy experiencing the contrast of non-stop action in Dubai, the world's number one business, shopping and social hub with the total bliss of the picture-perfect Maldives.

The Maldives In the Maldives, Mother Nature has created perfection, which the Maldivain government is carefully nurturing to preserve its unique beauty. Hotels are built using natural materials indigenous to the islands and everywhere the lush vegetation has been carefully preserved, marine life protected and beaches groomed and extended to create paradise on earth. From your luxurious beach or water villa you can spot couples snorkelling together over coral reefs teeming with marine life. Down on the beach take a stroll on pristine white sands and tip your toes into the turquoise lagoon. Toast the magnificent sunset with a fruit cocktail before heading down to your candle-lit restaurant on the beach, where couples can dine beneath clear, moonlit skies. Heavenly? You bet!

Dubai Dubai is a unique destination that is both a dynamic business centre and a tourist paradise, offering sightseeing, shopping, fine dining and quality hotels. From the tranquility of the desert with its rugged mountains, awe-inspiring sand dunes and dusty villages to the lively bustle of the city with its souk, ultra-modern shopping malls, sandy beaches and sophisticated nightlife. Dubai offers a range of hotels to suit every taste, whim and budget – from the opulent seven star Burj Al Arab through to the very affordable. The city is ranked the second world's most popular destination for shopping – it has it all including duty free, gold, electronics, textiles and cars, it is a shopper's paradise. Dubai has also established itself as a major destination for local and international events and is the sporting capital of the Middle East.

Brides Abroad asked Simon and Kelly what made them decide on a two destination honeymoon. They said: We had so many honeymoon destination favourites but we liked the idea of a combination of paradise and busy glitz so opted for the Maldives and Dubai. We loved seeing two destinations in one holiday and the contrast of the two destinations worked really well for us – spending time in a place with only sand and ocean and a city with landmarks, which is buzzing with excitement. www.BridesAbroad.tv 127

The Maldives First impression of the Maldives? We arrived at a small hustle-and-bustle airport in Male. But, following an exciting speedboat transfer, our first impressions of our destination island, Centara Ras Fushi Resort and Spa, was pure bliss.

Describe your room? Our room on the beach was a little private piece of heaven with a view of the sea washing up on the sand from our bed.

Any special honeymoon treats? We had a happy honeymoon card, present and a bottle of Champagne from the staff at the resort. This was a lovely touch as many of the guests were also celebrating honeymoons. It was nice to feel special individually.

Did you go on any excursions? We took part in some of the many excursions offered, including nighttime snorkelling, a visit to a mainland village and sunset fishing.

What about watersports? We took advantage of the complimentary water sports, especially the snorkelling.

How did you relax? Everything you did on the island was relaxing.

Most romantic moment? Finding a spot on the beach just the two of us and drinking our Champagne as the sun went down and watching people enjoy their evening in the bar across the water.

Where to stay Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa, Maldives Less than a 20 minutes speedboat journey from Ibrahim Nassir International Airport, the Centara Ras Fushi is an adults-only resort set on a pristine island blessed with tropical beauty in North MalĂŠ Atoll that is ideal for couples and honeymooners. Light and airy villas with wooden flooring and natural fabrics provide sensational views of the Indian Ocean in a choice of beachside or overwater accommodation. Pure white sand and a sparkling blue lagoon make this a perfect playground for beach games, snorkeling and water sports, while the magical underwater world of some of the top dive sites in the Maldives are reached within less than half an hour by dhoni. Exciting dining and a sublime spa make this a haven for those seeking a tropical escape.

Dubai First impressions of Dubai? We travelled from a Robinson Crusoe island to a busy, rich city. Dubai is an amazing city with so much to offer – every view has a wow-factor! The people are friendly and keen to talk about the history of Dubai.

Most memorable moment of your stay? Having a Champagne dinner at the top of Burj Al Arab. Very expensive but a dinner I will never forget.

Did you spend any time relaxing?

How was your hotel?

The hotel had a lovely rooftop pool. Due to our flight times and UK time difference there was a delay with paperwork confirmation. We were sent to enjoy complimentary drinks by the poolside so they could sort things on our behalf while we relaxed.

We stayed at the Flora Grand Hotel in Dubai, where the hotel staff were amazing. On learning we were on our honeymoon we were up-graded to a suite and returned home one evening to find a honeymoon cake waiting for us in our room. Little touches that made us feel special.

How was the Dubai shopping experience? Dubai has the best shopping malls. We enjoyed Dubai Mall – the world's largest. It was incredible, especially the aquarium inside.

What is the most special thing about Dubai? The people. Everyone was so helpful and proud of where they lived. The way everything has grown so quickly is amazing. It now hosts some of the world's greatest landmarks. We experienced a holiday of a lifetime!

Where to stay Flora Grand Hotel & Spa, Dubai The Flora Grand Hotel is a 4-star deluxe hotel conveniently located in the heart of Dubai's thriving commercial and leisure district, just 10 minutes from Dubai International Airport and on the famous Al Rigga Street - the most exciting part of town all-year round. The hotel offers 200 rooms in a choice of rooms and suites. There is also a Serenity Spa and Health Club for you to indulge your mind and body in the gym and outdoor pool. You can dine throughout the day in The Monsoon restaurant which serves international cuisine. You can also enjoy a delightful selection of cookies, fresh pastries, juices and coffee at Al Nakheel coffee shop.
