SPA GLOSSARY 4 www.spaworld.tv

Welcome to the world’s finest spas...

S

pas have come a long way in a short space of time. A decade ago you would be fortunate if the hotel you visited had a treatment room tacked-on to its gym or pool area and a handful of massages to choose from. Fast-forward to 2011 and spas now form an integral part of modern life and are often one of the main attractions – sometimes the main attraction – for a new generation of savvy travellers and spa-lovers. For most of us a holiday wouldn’t be the same without a trip to the spa and a spot of pampering! This has led to the rise of the destination spa – lavishly appointed wellness facilities that boast cutting-edge design, superb facilities and a plethora of holistic therapies and beauty treatments. Combine this with some of the world’s finest, opulent hotels in the most exciting and beautiful locations and you have a recipe for a memorable wellness and travel experience. After all, what could be more sublime than having all your cares massaged away while watching the sun set over the Caribbean? Spa World’s knowledgeable team of experts has handpicked the world’s finest spa resorts, many of which are members of elite organizations such as The Leading Hotels of the World, ensuring you receive the highest possible standards. So whether it’s a short city break or a blissfully serene Indian Ocean retreat, all you have to do is sit back, relax and plan your perfect spa break. The world’s finest, most exclusive spas are waiting for you...

World of spa experiences

Lifetime benefits

With the pressures of modern life more intense than ever before, the need for spa breaks has never been greater. Whatever your choice of destination and length of stay, any spa break provides welcome respite from the stresses and strains of busy lives, providing vital breathing space and quality time to nurture mind, body and soul.

For many cultures – particularly in Asia and the Far East – massage therapy is an integral part of healthy living, handed down through generations.

The variety of spas – from traditional to ultra-modern – is mirrored in the breadth of wellness experiences available. So whether you love the refreshing marine power of thalassotherapy treatments, are seeking a truly holistic and spiritual Ayurvedic retreat, or simply looking for some well-earned pampering and beauty treatments, the choice has never been greater. The phrase ‘East meets West’ has perhaps become clichéd in spa circles, but it still holds an element of truth for many spas where ancient oriental and far eastern rituals form a potent union with contemporary Western science-based therapies. Many of the stunning spa resorts we’ve featured have therapies that reflect the indigenous spa traditions and ancient healing practices of their country, so a spa break is a great way to satiate your wanderlust and experience ‘hands-on’ the unique flavours and culture of each nation.

There is no question that having even an occasional massage or facial can provide a much-needed boost. Aside from the holistic benefits of having a therapist ‘laying on’ hands, spa treatments are a great way of lifting the spirits, enjoying some precious ‘me-time’, relaxing busy minds and enhancing beauty naturally. However, spa therapies can also have a more profound effect on your long-term wellness. Many treatments, particularly massages, are more than skin deep, and can boost wellbeing by relaxing tight muscles, enhancing circulation and stimulating lymphatic drainage, as well as leaving you with glowing, radiant skin. Spas usually offer tailor-made packages combining healthy menus, exercise, yoga and treatments to deliver a truly holistic experience – providing inspiration and ideas that you can integrate into your everyday life for a healthier, fitter new you. Your next spa break may just be a pleasant way of chilling out and relaxing, providing a short-term shot in the arm, but it could also provide the inspiration to change your life ccompletely. www.spaworld.tv 5

How to spa 10 steps to wellness and relaxation Time at the spa should be all about relaxation. Here’s how to make the most of your experience

1 2

Book well in advance The last thing you want to do is turn up on the day, only to find that the spa is fully booked. Most spas have their menus online, so pick the treatments you want and book your slot well in advance to avoid disappointment, particularly at peak times like weekends. Do your homework If you’re unsure about what to book drop the spa an email or, better still, give them a ring and the therapists will be able to offer you some guidance. Tell them what you want to achieve from your time in the spa and ask their

6 www.spaworld.tv

advice about treatments and programmes that best suit your current physical, mental and emotional condition.

3

Medical history If you have had an operation recently, are pregnant, have circulatory problems, blood pressure, heart disease, joint problems or have suffered from a recent fracture, sprain or ligament tear it is important to let your therapist know before your treatment. Most spas worth their salt will conduct a medical consultation prior to treatment. If you are unsure it is always worth consulting your doctor beforehand. If you wear contact lenses and are having a facial, tell your therapist.

4

Prep your skin and body Exposure to too much sun, waxing or shaving can all sensitize the skin, which could affect the enjoyment of your therapy and may even cause some discomfort. Avoid too many rays and allow at least 24 hours after waxing. For men – try to shave several hours before a facial to ensure maximum results. Try to avoid alcohol on the day of your treatment and avoid eating at least an hour before.

5

Enjoy the facilities Most contemporary spas complement their treatment rooms with swimming and hydrotherapy pools, experience showers and thermal suites, so allow plenty of time to enjoy them. Not only will this help you to relax, it will also enhance the efficacy and enjoyment of your therapy. Before you head to the spa it’s best to leave any jewellery and mobiles in your room safe.

6

To bare or not to bare? Visiting a spa is an intimate experience and not everyone feels comfortable having a treatment in their birthday suit. In most cases nudity or wearing a swimming costume are both fine – it really is a case of whatever you feel most comfortable doing. As well as robes and slippers, many spas provide disposable underwear, particularly for wraps and scrubs. If you prefer wearing a swimming costume or bikini, ensure you don’t mind it being covered in essential oils, mud and cream. Remember as well that if you do choose to wear nothing, your modesty will be protected by carefullyplaced towels.

Even if you plan not to wear anything during your treatment it’s worth taking your costume so you can make use of any heat experience rooms and hydrotherapy pools. In countries such as Germany it is the norm to be ‘au naturel’ when using a sauna or steam room. If you are unsure about the etiquette or are uncomfortable with this ask the spa staff before taking the plunge.

7

Choosing your therapist If you would prefer a male or female therapist mention this when booking your treatment. This is particularly relevant in the Middle East, where there are usually separate male and female treatment areas. If you have enjoyed a treatment with a particular therapist, don’t be shy about asking for them again.

8

Go with the flow If you are a spa novice then having a massage from a complete stranger can feel quite daunting, and often the urge is to retain control of your body and move arms and legs for your therapist – a process known as ‘holding on’. By placing confidence in your therapist and ‘letting go’ you will enjoy the experience that much more and gain greater wellness benefits, too.

9

Get things right for you This is your time and your treatment so once you are lying down, make sure you are completely relaxed and at ease. If something is not quite right, such as the room temperature, lighting, music or pressure of the massage, let your therapist know. If you feel at ease and comfortable in your surroundings you are more likely to enjoy the whole experience.

10

Long-term benefits A day in the spa can provide a real tonic, enhancing skin tone, soothing tired muscles, aiding relaxation and a general sense of well-being. However, it can also be the catalyst for a new, healthier approach that lasts a lifetime. Many spas have programmes which can inspire to you kick-start a regime of more exercise, healthier eating and regular treatments, the latter helping therapists to target issues such as cellulite more effectively.

When it comes to defining The Four Seasons Cyprus the keyword is ‘exclusivity’. And this certainly applies to the resort’s Shiseido Spa – the only one of its kind on the island and in the entire Eastern Mediterranean, and one of only six in the world to offer Shiseido’s Qi method concept.

Restaurants: Mavrommatis, Greek/ Mediterranean; Vivaldi, Italian; Seasons Oriental, Chinese; Vista Bar and Vista Terrace; Colors Café; Café Patisserie and gelateria

Opened in 2007, the spa’s simple, elegant design blends symmetry, graceful curves and calming neutrals, juxtaposed with black and vibrant reds to embody the very essence of Japan – the home of this premium spa brand. This corner of the Far East in the Eastern Med is comfortable and relaxed, easing away stress and fatigue in an instant. The Oriental concept of harmony, well-being and beauty focuses on the energy circulating in the body, known as Qi. Inspired by this cultural heritage, Shiseido has created the Qi method, which combines Shiatsu pressure points with Oshibori (warm, moist Japanese towels) and Western massage techniques to create a unique massage experience that regulates energy flow, inducing profound relaxation and a sense of total well-being, while enhancing the radiance of the skin. Each Shiseido Spa has a unique signature treatment, and the spa at Four Seasons Cyprus is no different. Shiseido’s Spa Serenity is an indulgent top to toe body and scalp treatment lasting two hours 30 minutes, including a Japanese foot bath ritual, Total Zen Delight full-body massage and Japanese Scalp and Shoulders Massage. The Shiseido Spa features a number of luxury treatment rooms and a second dedicated relaxation area in line with the Shiseido Qi philosophy. A large range of hydro treatments, Aromasul Mud therapy and thalasso treatments by the French Phytomer range are also available.
