A soldier named Nobushige came to Hakuin, and asked: "Is there really a paradise and a hell?" "Who are you?" inquired Hakuin. "I am a samurai," the warrior replied.

The information published in the individual contributions of "You, a soldier!" exclaimed Hakuin. "What kind of ruler would have you the authors agree not always in as his guard? Your face looks like that of a beggar." agreement with the views of the editor or the publisher. Nobushige became so angry that he began to draw his sword, but Hakuin continued: "So you have a sword! Your weapon is probably much too dull to cut off my head." As Nobushige drew his sword Hakuin remarked: "Here open the gates of hell!" At these words the samurai, perceiving the master's discipline, sheathed his sword and bowed. "Here open the gates of paradise," said Hakuin. 2

Dear WHD fellows, What´s special in WHD? An easy question one might think and I also thought when I started WHD some years ago without knowing other martial arts than Judo. But, the more you look around, the more you get interested in other martial arts, the more you´ll find similarities in techniques, in the concepts of attack and defense, in the theory of key power, in the martial arts philosophy, actually in each martial art aspect you may think of. Starting to compare different martial arts with WHD I found: Yes, they (Aikido, Wing tsun, Tai Chi, Hap ki do, Jiu Jutsu, Pencak Silat, Thai boxing, Karate, Boxing, etc.) have certain elements, movements, techniques too (or the other way round: WHD has that too) but in WHD we do it differently. It´s not the same thing. And that was a bit confusing at the end: What´s the difference exactly? And how to explain it to other people? The first specialty in WHD you get to know is that we do certain circular movements – with our arms, our legs, actually with our whole body AND most difficult with our mind too. What does it mean to have a circular mind, or to be circular in your mind? It´s one of the mysterious things that remains a little unclear to me (I only have an idea about it) due to the poor English transla-

tions or explanations in verbal or written communication with korean masters. There is always a bias of the meaning when being translated. So I regret every day that I have never learned the korean language. Think of a tourist who asks you on the street something and you don´t understand him. You can only try to guess or feel

A specialty of WHD are the forms and the applications which derive from the forms. Some of them are difficult to understand when you think only of defending one opponent. But when you start thinking of more than one opponent - what may be very realistic out on the street - then it´s easier to see the benefit (e.g. forms to the left - Pjong Whe or forms to the right - Pjong Ne). A specialty of WHD is that you can do it very soft and very slow and it still makes sense. Doing it soft and slowly was introduced to me as “moving meditation”. A good thing when you think of Tai Chi or Chi

what he wants to tell you. Watching his body language, his emotions and all the other non verbal communication signals. Anyway such is life and another specialty in WHD was the possibility to learn directly from it´s founder great grandmaster Han Bon Ki who passed away only a few years ago. God bless him. But now you have the chance to learn WHD from his son, Han Hyong Sok what is still a great chance.

Gong. So far some specialties of WHD from my personal point of view and the list can be a lot longer if you ask different people about it. WonHwaDo is for sure not an easy or simple martial art and its secrets will reveal only after intense engagement. Even after decades of training it´s always good for a surprise, a new experience, a new finding. So keep your mind open and searching.

A specialty of WHD is the foun- Kind regards, dation of its circular movement. Korean people rub their palms Michael from Austria in circular motions while they – pray. Yes, while they are praying - this action is called “bison” - a deep spiritual thing close to meditation. So WHD doesn´t come from watching animals doing their fights and that’s for sure unique. 3

develop my understanding and wisdom of martial arts and it is interesting to watch how other martial arts do throwing, kicking or locks.

My way to WonHwaDo An-nyeong-ha-se-yo, At the Beginning, I would like to mention something about myself. My name is Lutz Winter and I’m 42 years old and practiced martial arts for 22 years. During my school time I got in touch with canoeing and I did it for many years. After some trouble I moved to tennis which I practiced until my military duties.

Recently for me WonHwaDo is one of the most beautiful and interesting Martial Arts in the World. In recent years we have had various masters, so for example master Byong Dok Lee, master Hiroshi Karita and master Kim Dorim, who have tried to push the European WHD. Unfortunately, these masters had to go back to their countries or stopped their activities.

During my military service I met one guy from Shotokan Karate and I was impressed from his motions, his ability and his self-confidence. So after my army time I went to sports college in my hometown and start Shotokan Karate training. After some time I saw an advertisement for a new Korean martial art called WonHwaDo with Master Hiroshi Karita. For about 3 years I practiced WonHwaDo, Shotokan Karate and muscle Now it’s on us to move forward the European training together, that means from Monday to WonHwaDo. We are the second generation und we have the responsibility to push the WonHwaSaturday I trained and only Sunday I relaxed. Do in our home countries and also in Europe. I Later I stopped Karate and focused on WonHwa- hope we all will do our best and work together Do. But also I trained other martial arts like Kick- like a big family. boxing, Seidokaikan Karate, Thai boxing and Shaolin kung Fu. Finally I decide to stop other Yours martial arts studies and concentrate only on Lutz Winter, Germany WonHwaDo. But from time to time I also join Budo-workshops to practice other martial arts. I think this can 6
