Sedimentation scanner Mangrove, coral and seagrass health Sedimentation produced by dredging can result in severe negative impacts on sensitive ecosystems. Traditionally, onshore sedimentation levels are measured via a team of field personnel visiting the same wooden stakes on site and physically measuring the clean area on the stick to the nearest centimetre, whilst offshore sediment samples were taken with divers in PVC tubes. This approach involved high field exposure, environmental disturbance and provided low and inaccurate data capture - measurements were taken with a month lag, which did not allow for mitigation measures against the impacting process. WorleyParsons has exclusive access to unique technology, the “Sedimentation Scanner, which enables sediment to be measured on a daily basis from the office via a remote scanning device. The scanners can be set up either offshore (corals and seagrass) or onshore (mangroves) and are deployed half buried in the sediment at sensitive benthic primary producer sites. By using the Scanners, sedimentation can be calculated to the minute if required, but daily calculation provides a proactive way to manage dredge related impacts. Data capture using this technology has been exceptional, providing the first insights into pneumatophores bed stress and mangroves physiological responses to sedimentation.

Passive and active acoustic monitoring Marine mammal observation Vibration from underwater noise generated by industrial activities in the marine environment can cause injury to marine fauna. Typically, Marine Fauna Observers spend hours on boat undertaking visual surveys, relying on mammals breaching the surface, to watch if marine fauna enter set exclusion zones. This method has high field exposure, is also only effective during daylight hours and in conducive sea and weather conditions. WorleyParsons prefer to monitor marine fauna using a range of passive and active acoustic monitoring techniques that provide improved detection and protection of marine fauna, whilst reducing costs associated with labour and vessels and providing a safer working environment. This method provides data in real-time, 24 hours a day on a secure website. If there is a breach within a specified exclusion zone, the operator will be alerted immediately via SMS. Active Acoustic Monitoring (AAC) is efficiently used as an ‘early warning system’ to identify the presence of fauna in the area. WorleyParsons has developed a stand-alone acoustic package, customised for the marine monitoring industry. This system allows the potential target strength, speed and direction of marine mammals within range to be displayed in real time. Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) accurately and reliably locates and tracks marine fauna using a specialist hydrophone. WorleyParsons have introduced a further advance in the functionality of PAM by using a telemetered system. Marine fauna can be tracked, identified and located well in advance of a breach with specific species tracking software so that operators have sufficient time to plan for a likely breach as well as a long-term permanent record of sound.

Remote operated vehicle Marine pests Non trading vessels (such as dredges and construction vessels) entering countries from international waters are required to undergo marine pest inspections to prevent outbreaks that could negatively impact native species and habitat. Typically these inspections are undertaken by divers physically inspecting the hull underwater using still and video imagery. This method has high safety risks due to vessel thrusters, cathodic protection and other diving associated risks. WorleyParsons delivers rapid, reliable marine pest surveys using customised remote operated vehicles (ROVs). These devices scan the hull of any inbound vessel for marine pests, by suctioning onto the hull of the vessel and traversing the surface taking both video and still imagery. ROVs are piloted from the surface and imagery is analysed in real time by qualified and experienced marine scientists. This approach eliminates diving exposure and reduces personnel in the field.

Zero harm There are numerous ways to minimise risk and HSE exposure using the hierarchy of controls, however the most superior option is to remove the risk completely. By removing diving and reducing the field exposure of our personnel we have created an inherently safer working environment which is strongly encouraged by our customers and reflects the zero harm ethos of our business.

Coral transector Coral and seagrass health WorleyParsons have exclusive access to world first technology to monitor coral and seagrass health that is remote, reliable and does not require divers. The Coral Transector is deployed on the sea floor, and can be operated to undertake surveys immediately and remotely at any time, from anywhere in the world and delivers results within minutes. The technology has an extendable telescopic arm with a fully flexible camera to capture either stills or video of the surrounding habitat for live analysis. The Coral Transector can collect data sub-daily, whilst a dive crew can only practically collect this data monthly. Traditionally, dive teams are deployed fortnightly for coral and seagrass health surveys, with a near permanent field presence. Data capture was minimal and there was a delay in the collection and interpretation process. This meant that if an incident had occurred, by the time it was identified it was too late to manage the impact. Alternative coral monitoring methods trialled by the environmental services industry included a range of remotely operated devices. A continual critical flaw in this approach was the inability of the ROVs to capture corals from the same aspect, as required for statistical analysis. The Coral Transector technology mitigates the aspect issue by capturing an image or a series of images from the identical location and aspect.

Remote telemetry Water quality WorleyParsons manage live telemetry systems for numerous projects worldwide and upload real-time statistics onto web-based delivery systems. WorleyParsons QA/QC the data daily and SMS alerts are dispatched automatically to nominated team members. This process is reliant on robust telemetry equipment. WorleyParsons found that off-the-shelf telemetry systems do not withstand cyclonic weather conditions and buoys are often vulnerable to destruction by larger vessels. Through trial and error, WorleyParsons has developed a telemetry system that is virtually indestructible. We have adapted a buoy developed for North Sea conditions and removed the data cable, resulting in robust equipment that continually captures data through all impacts and weather conditions. Data captured through cyclones increases water quality baseline information, resulting in the development of more robust water quality thresholds. Our cyclone proof systems provide project schedule assurance through all seasons, by not needing to deploy teams to recover or repair equipment following a cyclone which could potentially take systems offline for months.

Remote survey vessel Bathymetric surveys WorleyParsons utilise an innovative remotely controlled survey vessel (RCSV) to conduct bathymetric surveys in hazardous, difficult to access or logistically challenging locations such as canals, lakes, tailings dams, reservoirs and rivers. The survey system comprises an easily deployed and highly maneuverable vessel which is fitted with a precision single beam echo sounder integrated with GPS positioning and a remote telemetry control system (over 1 km range). The survey results are received and assessed in real time by trained hydrographic surveyors.

Oil spill tracking buoy Oil spill response

The Oil Spill Tracking Buoy was developed in response to a customer’s need to develop a solution for oil tracking buoys that could track currents rather than the wind direction. The problem using the traditional buoys to monitor an oil spill is that wind doesn’t drive the direction of the oil spill, the current does. When you drop a regular floating buoy, 90 per cent of it will float above water, resulting in it being driven by the wind. WorleyParsons OSTB is designed to accurately track a surface oil spill with movement to the buoy limited to met-ocean conditions found in the upper 0.5m of the water column – improving accuracy of tracking the oil spill. WorleyParsons OSTBs are fitted with a unique, impact-resistant satellite tracking device. For a spill response, each tracker is programmed to wake, locate its position, transmit its location to the dedicated project web interface, and then resume its sleep function. WorleyParsons operates a dedicated web interface for the global OSTB system. Each buoy has its own identification number and can be tracked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The web interface also allows tracking of multiple OSTBs at once, thus permitting the end user the ability to map the extent of the spill and ultimately calculate dispersion rates. With a proven heavy duty design that enables the buoys to withstand a 50 metre free fall deployment into the ocean and a global satellite tracking system the WorleyParsons OSTB can be safely deployed from oil rigs, rig support vessels and helicopters.

Unmanned aerial vehicles Benthic habitat, mangrove and dredge plume mapping WorleyParsons have found that Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provide a rapid approach to quickly map benthic habitat, mangroves and dredge plumes at comparatively minimal cost to traditional methods. WorleyParsons remote helicopter-based image capture system utilises a high resolution digital camera and integrated GPS/Inertial Navigation Unit (GPS/INU) to undertake mapping surveys. Standard functions such as zoom and shutter speeds can also be adjusted remotely by the pilot. WorleyParsons has designed methodologies using repeatable flight paths to validate against baselineimagery. Imagery is flown at set intervals, taking overlapping photos of the landscape below. Images are typically captured from 50-100 metres above sea-level.

Underwater glider Benthic habitat and dredge plume mapping and water quality monitoring Our autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) or glider is another practical tool to conduct benthic habitat mapping, dredge plume mapping and water quality sampling. The glider floats underwater and has the ability to change its buoyancy in order to move both vertically and horizontally through the water column, capturing 3D data in real time. The AUV is piloted either remotely or a site location relaying from the AUV using satellite to the control center. 15
