Built by Lürssen as project 9906 and delivered in 2002, SKAT was, and remains well ahead of her time. Visually dramatic, the exterior by Espen Øino features harmoniously balanced geometric shapes and clean lines purposely reflecting the materials - steel, aluminum and glass used for her construction. Her distinctive grey color which highlights the angular hull design is visually striking and easier on the eyes than stark white. Designed by Marco Zanini to match the exterior and maximize the use of space, the interior is minimalist, with ultra-clean lines. Zanini worked with few materials and colors but achieved an elegant richness. There are no superfluous lines or decoration. Simple uncluttered surfaces and, above all, lots of light. The amazing drama and flair of SKAT emerges from her uniquely functional design.

There are no status symbols aboard, no ornate furniture or decoration suggestive of a five-star hotel. SKAT was not built for show. Comfort and performance are essential. The construction brief called for as much light as possible which is the reason for the glass conservatory on the bridge deck which allows natural light to come in from above and below, thereby affording magnificent views. The lower deck is entirely used for crew, technical and storage. SKAT’s engineering and construction are as impressive as her styling. To ensure quiet operations, even by the strictest standards, machinery is mounted on double-resilient mounts while floors and ceilings throughout are soft-mounted. Optimization of the bulbous bow design produced a 15% fuel savings. Similar optimization of the rudders and stabilizers produced an additional 9% saving.

Heli Deck
The helipad is capable of landing and carrying an EC135 or Agusta 109 in private use. It contains the necessary equipment to refuel and maintain the helicopter. The landing deck is raised with easily removable stanchions so preparation prior to take-off or landing is quick. The forward sun pad cushions are recessed and don’t have to be removed during operations. A 1000kg davit is used to lift storage items on and off this deck. The davit is also used to service the tail rotor on the helicopter.

Gym Deck
The gym deck is equipped with a whirlpool with sun pads forward, a Ushaped seating and dining area to starboard and two long settees opposite. This area can be covered with sun awnings. The impressive mast centralizes all the technical appendices and halfway up is an observation platform with helm controls. The forward sundeck area can also be used as an outside cinema. The gym is further aft with glass doors looking out to the helicopter platform and sunbathing pad. This area includes a sauna, shower, bathroom and service pantry.

Bridge Deck
The forward section of the bridge deck houses the pilothouse, the Captain’s quarters and a sixth double guest stateroom with en suite bathroom. From midships aft the bridge deck is dedicated to guest relaxation, entertainment and work. Here the design of the exterior merges seamlessly with the interior, creating one large inside/outside open-plan living area. The perimeter is surrounded by the overhanging glass conservatory which extends the full length of the deck. It provides natural lighting and wonderful views and ensures the outside decks can be used in all weather conditions. Natural light also comes from an overhead skylight.

Guest Library 18
The library and a guest office with 6 workstations can be closed off from the informal salon aft if guests need private time to relax or work. The muted tones and smooth surfaces provide the perfect backdrop for select pieces of vibrantly colored furniture and art. The Brazilian designer Flavia Alves de Souza worked with Marco Zanini and Espen Øino on the interior decoration. Their successful collaboration led to SKAT winning "The Best Yachts of 2002 Show Boats Awards". The full-beam bridge deck informal salon opens onto the aft deck creating one large inside/outside area protected from the outside weather while being wonderfully lit up by the glass conservatory. An inside seating area is to starboard and the dining area opposite are linked by the freestanding bar which also serves the adjacent on deck dining and lounging areas.

Main Deck
The main salon, often used as a cinema, is aft of the main deck dining room. The salon/cinema has a flexible seating arrangement and a big screen TV on an overhead lift. The dining room has split teak topped tables for more intimate settings, but they can also be converted to a single long table with 12 chairs. The main deck aft is large and open with fixed and loose seating, coffee tables and buffet servers either side. Access to the passarelle is on the centerline and there is a staircase down on the starboard side to the swim platform and beach club.

Accommodations
SKAT accommodates 12 guests in 6 staterooms, all with en suite bathrooms, plus 2 children in a stateroom on deck which shares a bathroom. The total accommodation capacity is 14. The full beam owner’s suite is forward with bathroom aft to starboard with shower with steam function, full size bathtub, double vanities and a toilet and bidet in separate room. The children’s stateroom and 4 additional guest staterooms are also on the main deck.

Crew Deck
The lower crew deck forward contains the audio/video control room, cool, cold and deep-freeze walk-ins, laundry, technical and bonded-stores rooms, the wine cellar, engine room, tender garages and beach club. SKAT carries two 8.5m tenders, two wave runners and even bicycles with an accompanying lift for easy exit from the ship. Tenders are launched and retrieved through doors in either side of the hull using a sophisticated system of hydraulic rams which operate the hatch doors and lifting beams. 34

Engine Room
SKAT’s performance is as cutting edge as her design. Every component reflects strict attention to detail and a singular commitment to purpose. Lürssen’s installations are magnificent. Engines, generators, compressors and watermakers are all double resilient mounted on a massive steel “raft” that floats on some 26 flexible mounts to minimize vibration. Two big, stainless steel-encapsulated exhaust systems reduce exhaust noise to barely audible levels. SKAT is impressively quiet and vibration free. SKAT is powered by 2 MTU 16V 4000 M70 (2682hp) main engines and is equipped with Koopnautic Searocq 4080 stabilizers.
