Applied Law

BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Extended Certificate When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For two years. What is this course about? The course looks at the way the law works, how law is made and the people involved in the law. Students will also study several aspects of criminal law such as homicide, theft, burglary and robbery. What topics will I study? There are 4 units in this course: Dispute Solving in Civil Law (External assessment) In this unit we look at the people involved in a court case and the way in which civil law cases are dealt with. Criminal Law & the Legal System (Internal assessment) In this unit we look at the way in which laws are made by the courts, Europe and parliament. We also cover a range of non-fatal criminal offences and the sentences imposed by the courts.

Applying the Law (External assessment) In this unit we look in greater depth at criminal law including murder, manslaughter, theft, robbery burglary and criminal damage, and the available defences. Family Law (Internal assessment) In this unit we look at the requirements of a valid marriage and what happens when that marriage breaks down – can the parties get an annulment or a divorce? How will my work be assessed? Externally assessed units will be set tasks. Internally assessed units will help you to build a portfolio of work. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C, including a grade 4 in a written subject, such as English Language, History or Media Studies. What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? An interest in law is essential. An interest in current affairs is desirable so that you can give examples from


real life to show how the law works. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? In order to do well on this course students will need to: • Listen attentively - pay attention to the fine details of the subjects, essential for higher grades in law. • Participate fully - in order to enjoy and get the most out of lessons. • Seek and act on feedback - by learning to give and take regular peer assessment in class. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? There is also A Level Law. This is assessed by exams so suits people who are good at remembering a lot of facts and writing them down under the pressure of timed conditions. The BTEC is better if students don’t produce their best in exams but have a real interest in law and possibly want a law related career such as the police or probation service. What do students say about this course? “The BTEC law course has helped me to understand different areas of law and will help me when I hope to apply to join the police force in a few years.” “I like presenting my ideas in assignments instead of doing lots of exams; I think this suits my learning style much better.”

“Initially law was not my first choice, however it is now my favourite subject!” Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? Law goes well with anything. A lot of students successfully combine law with criminology, business and social science subjects such as history and psychology. What do people do with Applied Law BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma? This qualification provides a good foundation for progression to higher education courses such as law, criminology or business studies. It also provides a good foundation to move on to law related careers such as a legal secretary, or progression to the Institute of Legal Executives exams.


Applied Psychology

BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma

When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? One year for the certificate, two years for the extended certificate. What is this course about? This course will give you an introduction to the psychology sector through applied learning: you will learn about theories of psychology, what makes us think and behave the way we do, and how we can research this.

Year Two: Unit 3: Health Psychology - Learners explore psychological approaches, theories and studies related to lifestyle choices, unhealthy behaviours and behavioural change, including stress, addiction and how to deal with these. If so how do I choose between them? In terms of content, there is a lot of overlap between this course and Psychology A Level. This course is more suited to you if you find linear, exam-based courses more of a challenge. If you feel that you don’t

give your best work in exams, then the Applied Psychology BTEC will be a great option for you. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well this one? Applied Psychology goes particularly well with lots of different groupings of subjects, because it counts as an arts or science subject. It is often studied alongside Biology, Sociology, Criminology, Law, Maths or English. Applied Psychology goes with almost any combination of subjects. What do people do with Applied Psychology BTEC Level 3 With Applied Psychology, many people will go to university to study Psychology or Psychology related subjects: Sports Psychology and Clinical Psychology, for example. It also is a great course for a wide range of other courses as it gives you strong research and critical thinking skills. Students who study psychology go on to a wide range of psychology and non-psychology related careers, e.g: clinical psychology, human resources, teaching, medicine, physiotherapy, law, social work and marketing - to name just a few.

CAMTEC Level 3 (Single) Certificate/ Extended Certificate Equivalent to 1 A Level

When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For two years. What is this course about? This practical, work-related course allows you to study aspects of biology, chemistry and physics to an advanced level. You will complete practical and theoretical assessments in all three sciences. What topics will I study? In year 1, for the Level 3 Certificate there are two units: • Unit 1 - Science Fundamentals • Unit 2 - Laboratory Techniques In year 2, for the Level 3 Extended Certificate, you will complete the coursework units: • Unit 6 - Control of Hazards in the Laboratory • Unit 18 - Microbiology • Unit 21 – Product Testing Techniques Biology covers aspects such human body systems, microbiology, genetics

and cell biology. Chemistry covers aspects such as practical chemical analysis and laboratory techniques, atomic structure and the periodic table, and industrial applications of chemistry. Physics covers energy and the structures, properties and uses of material. How will my work be assessed? The whole course is 50% exam and 50% coursework, with both Unit 1 and Unit 2 exams taken in year 1 (January and May). Your coursework units will be assessed internally by your teachers. You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9 - 4 or A*-C including two grade 4s in GCSE Science or a Level 2 BTEC in Applied Science at Merit level and a minimum grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics. What are the lessons like? You will carry out many experiments, some of which you will design yourself, learning how to analyse and evaluate your results. There will be lessons where you undertake independent and group research, discuss scientific issues, research information online, revise topics and practice exam techniques. You will develop strong independent study skills throughout your time studying applied science. Subject support is available to all students throughout the year. Students need to be well organised and you must be able to keep on schedule with your work. There is a lot of research from the internet and scientific literature, so it helps to be used to working independently. For practical work, as well as good communication skills, students need to enjoy problem solving, be analytical and work well with others. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? A Level Biology and A Level Chemistry have some similar content to Applied Science but have different entry requirements. We also offer CAMTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science which is equivalent to two A Levels, and also covers elements of biology, chemistry and physics. Because of the overlap you cannot combine the Diploma in Applied Science with this particular course. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? This qualification is commonly combined A Levels such as Psychology, Maths, Geography and other level 3 qualifications such as Applied Psychology, Health and Social Care, Criminology and


Environmental Science. Many combinations are available. What do people do with CAMTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science? Past students have gone on to do degrees in nursing, paramedic science or pharmacology. Some have progressed to studying subjects such as Geology, Psychology, Sports Science and Business. In addition, some students have gone on to apprenticeships at GSK or got work as lab technicians. NB: this course is not normally recommended as a route into highly competitive areas such as medicine, dentistry or physiotherapy.


Applied Science CAMTEC Level 3 Diploma (Double) Extended Certificate/Diploma Equivalent to 2 A Levels When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For two years.

There are four more units in year 2 (one exam, three coursework), covering more in-depth and practical aspects of biology and chemistry and their applications in a scientific workplace.

What is this course about? This practical, work-related course allows you to study aspects of biology, chemistry and physics to an advanced level. You will complete practical and theoretical assignments, which are assessed as coursework, and three units which are assessed by exam (two in the first year and one in the second).

Biology covers aspects such human body systems, microbiology, genetics and cell biology.

What topics will I study? In year 1: for the CAMTEC Level 3 Diploma there are two exam units: • Unit 1 - Science Fundamentals • Unit 2 - Laboratory Techniques

Physics covers energy and the structures, properties and uses of material.

We also offer CAMTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science which is equivalent to one A Level, and also covers elements of


biology, chemistry and physics. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? Combination with Criminology, Applied Psychology or Environmental Science is popular. You could consider combining it with A Level Mathematics, Psychology or Geography. There is a wide range of contrasting non-scientific subjects that would enable you to achieve a good balance. What do people do with Diploma in Applied Science? If you want to enter employment straight away you could work in areas such as a hospital or pharmaceutical laboratory. Alternatively, you may wish to progress to higher or further education or an apprenticeship. Past students have gone on to do degrees in biosciences, nursing, paramedic science or pharmacology. Business

CAMTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For two years. One year to complete the CAMTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business (equivalent to one A Level). Two years to complete the CAMTEC Level 3 Diploma in Business (equivalent to 2 A Levels). What is this course about? The qualification is designed to prepare students for employment in the business sector, progression to higher education or apprenticeship opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to develop practical, interpersonal and thinking skills alongside gaining a theoretical understanding of business related topics. This qualification fits well alongside subjects such as Financial Studies and Economics. Government & Politics and Law are other popular subject combinations.

What topics will I study? All units are mandatory and cover: Units Year 1: 1. The Business Environment Exam. 2. Working in Business Exam. 3. Customers and Communication Coursework. 4. Marketing and Market Research Coursework. 5. Principles of Project Management Coursework. Units Year 2 (in addition to those units in Year 1): 1. Business Decisions Exam. 2. Change Management Exam. 3. Marketing Strategy Coursework. 4. Marketing Campaign Coursework. 5. Delivering a Business Project Coursework. To ensure students gain vital industry experience there is a requirement to complete some work experience. This is a 20-hour (one working week) requirement of all students working with local businesses in the area to develop an array of business skills. Students should explore possibilities early in the course to ensure a work experience placement of their preference. This ties in


with units such as customers and communication and the business environment. How will my work be assessed? Externally assessed units (50%/42% of the one/twoyear course) will be examination based. Internally assessed units (50%/58% of the one/twoyear course) will be in a range of formats. These include practical tasks, written or typed documents, presentations as well as professional conversations and role plays. Are there any specific entry requirements? You need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C, or a Business BTEC Level 2 Certificate. What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? No previous knowledge of Business Studies is required, however an interest in current affairs is an advantage. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? • An ability to manage time effectively and to be organised in terms of college work, independent study and part time work to ensure success on this course. Deadlines must be followed. • The ability to self-assess their own work along with teacher support to maximise grades.

What are the lessons like? A range of teaching and learning styles are used during the course. The course is continuously assessed therefore students must be highly organised with a positive work ethic to ensure full success. There is the A Level in Business Studies which is assessed 100% through examinations, whereas 50%/58% of this qualification is assessed through coursework, and 50%/42% through exam. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? This is the equivalent of two A Levels in Business so it can be combined with a wide range of other subjects. Closely related subjects are Financial Studies and Economics, Politics and Law are other popular combinations. You cannot study CAMTEC Business alongside A Level Business. What do people do with the Business BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate/Diploma? This qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admissions requirements for many courses if taken alongside other qualifications as part of a twoyear programme of learning.

The course is also an extremely useful background for those considering setting up their own business. It provides an understanding of business, which will be useful for nearly all careers and workplaces giving students valuable skills and experience which can be used to gain employment.


Creative and Performing Arts RSL Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For 1 year if you study the Diploma (equivalent of 1.5 A Levels) or for 2 years on the Extended Diploma (equivalent of 3 A levels). The Diploma can be studied over two years, by arrangement. For example, when a student is interested in taking two other A Levels alongside the course. What is this course about? This course gives learners the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and wider understanding for entry into the creative and performing arts industries. The course combines movement/dance, singing, music and drama. Students canand are encouraged to study this course alongside the Academy of Performing Arts enrichment classes held at lunchtimes in music, drama and dance. There are also many opportunities to get involved in the production side of performances throughout the year.

What topics will I study? There are two compulsory units in the first year: • Performance Preparation • Planning for a Career in the Creative and Performing Arts You will also study a range of units chosen to support performance focused projects such as: Musical Theatre Performance • Vocal Techniques • Choreography • Dance Techniques & Performance • Ensemble Music Performance How will my work be assessed? One of the core units is an externally- assessed project-based timed assessment under controlled conditions. All other units are assessed as coursework; there are no exams, and you will receive feedback about your progress throughout the course. Evidence for assessment will be generated through a range of activities including your own performing arts blog that records all written work and can also include oral assessment, presentations, an assessment of practical competency and level of performance.


Are there any specific entry requirements? You need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C., Level 2 Extended Certificate at Merit or Distinction level, or related experience in the creative and performing arts. You will also need to demonstrate a real passion for the performing arts and a desire for musical theatre. What skills and knowledge do I need beforehand to succeed? It is not necessary to have taken a Performing Arts subject at school. A willingness to develop an independent approach to taking direction and developing both practical and academic skills is most beneficial. If you love theatrical performance and are willing to work at all three skills committing your time, energy and creativity to your work, you will have a wonderful time on this course. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? Teamwork is an essential element of the course. Students need to be very reliable when it comes to both attendance and punctuality, they need to like working creatively in teams and enjoy sharing and experimenting with ideas. What are the lessons like? A range of teaching and learning styles is used during the course and a large proportion of the course is taught through practical performance activities.

Formal lessons are combined with discussion, case studies, task- based learning, practical activities, student- led activities, video and ILT. Teaching resources and course material are available on the Academy of Performing Arts Blog, this material is very important as the course is the equivalent to two A Levels but with no exams; the workload is demanding and coursework requirements are intense at times. Individual support is available to all students via both our vigilant team of well qualified teaching staff. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? The Academy of Performing Arts also run A Level courses in Dance, Drama & Theatre Studies, and Music. The RSL course in Creative and Performing Arts is the equivalent of three A Levels over 2 years, and can be combined with A Level Drama & Theatre Studies, Music or Dance to create a full-time arts course. Can I study qualifications outside of the Performing Arts alongside a Performing Arts Course? Yes. Many combinations of contrasting subjects are possible creating breadth and balance to your whole programme of study at the college. Our students often study Visual Arts & Media, English, Humanities, Sport and Law. However the skills that you gain working in the Arts can be highly valuable as part of a programme of study What do people do with RSL Level 3 Creative and Performing Arts? Students could take a degree in Performing Arts, Drama or Theatre Studies, and can go on to study either at drama school or university. Employment can be directly related to the skills developed in the course, leading to work as a performer, in theatre management or the broad range of production roles. However, the confidence, creative

thinking and presentation skills students develop through RSL Creative and Performing Arts will also serve you well in a variety of other careers, for example: Arts Administration, Drama Therapy, Teaching/Workshop Co-ordination, Journalism, Advertising & Marketing, Business, Law, Marketing & Public Relations, Hospitality, Event Management and Sales. Are there any additional costs? There is a studio fee payable at enrolment for all Performing Arts courses. The charge is ÂŁ40 per course, which covers all visiting companies, materials and workshops. All external trips are charged per show.


Criminology WJEC Level 3 Certificate/Diploma

When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For one year for the Certificate, and two years for the Diploma What is this course about? This course aims to provide, through applied learning, knowledge and understanding in real life contexts linked to the criminal justice system. It covers all aspects of crime, from what kinds of people commit crime, through crime scenes and courtrooms, to punishment and prisons. It has elements of psychology, law and sociology, and will be attractive to students interested in the social sciences or humanities. What topics will I study? In the first year you will study: Unit 1 – Changing awareness of crime Different types of crime, who commits crime, why some crimes are unreported, and the consequences of unreported crime; how campaigns can be used to change laws, attitudes to crime, and the influence of the media on this. You will create

your own campaign for change relating to crime. Unit 2 – Criminological Theories Social constructions of criminality; comparisons between criminality and deviance; psychological and sociological theories of criminality; causes of criminality; policy development to prevent reoffending, and how social change might affect crime and the law. In the second year you will study: Unit 3 – Crime Scene to Courtroom The process of criminal investigations, including personnel e.g. Scenes of Crime Officers, and techniques of processing evidence e.g. finger printing; the Crown Prosecution Service; the trial process and the rules involved; juries and magistrates; verdicts and miscarriages of justice. Unit 4 – Crime and Punishment Understand the criminal justice system in England and Wales; processes involved in law making; models of criminal justice; social control; aims and effects of punishment; agencies involved in social control and their effectiveness


How will my work be assessed? The qualifications are assessed using a combination of internal and external assessment. Units 2 and 4 are externally assessed through 90 minute exams using short and extended answer questions, both exams are synoptic. There is one resit opportunity for the exams.

Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? Students may take two other courses with this one, which could be A levels or BTECs. This course combines particularly well with Psychology, Sociology, Politics, Law, History A levels.

Units 1 and 3 are internally assessed through an 8 hour controlled assessment for each unit, completed under controlled conditions. At the end of the course, the Certificate is awarded a grade A – E, and the Diploma is awarded a grade A* - E.

What do people do with a Diploma in Criminology? The main purpose of the Diploma in Criminology is mainly to use the qualification to support access to higher education degree courses, such as: Criminology; Criminology and Psychology; Criminology and Sociology; Psychology and Sociology; Criminology with Law, etc.

What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? Good reading skills are important for this course, and students will need to develop their writing skills over the duration of the course. Students should have a strong interest in crime, people and society and be able to express their ideas in class discussions, as well as listen to the views of others. Ideally students will have organizational skills, or at least be prepared to develop them over the course, and an ability to meet deadlines will be important. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C, including a grade 4 in a written subject, such as English.

Alternatively, the qualification allows learners to gain the required understanding and skills to be able to consider employment within some aspects of the criminal justice system, e.g. the National Probation Service, the Courts and the Tribunals Service or the National Offender Management Service, or indeed the prison service or social work.



Digital Media CAMTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Diploma When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For two years. What is this course about? This course aims to give students experience and expertise in media productions in a range of contexts. Emphasis is upon student-led practical study and coupled with a theoretical/conceptual study of media production practice. This course is equivalent to one A Level. Students who complete the first year only will achieve a Certificate in Digital Media (½ of an A-Level). What topics will I study? Students will; • Learn how to write, plan and manage the production of media content. • Learn how to research and produce media content in a format appropriate to their subject. • Study theories and concepts in media production and the working of the media industry

and apply them to the analysis of case histories. Students will respond to briefs set internally by the college and externally by the exam board. They will work in fiction, factual and Fine Art contexts.

How will my work be assessed? Units are internally and externally assessed. The unit grades are added together to give you your final results: Pass, Merit or Distinction. Exceptional students are awarded a Distinction*. Your coursework will be assessed by your teacher throughout the year and written and verbal feedback given. There are 3 units a year. One unit is an examination unit and two are coursework units. The examination will be undertaken in June. Marking is completed with reference to grading criteria set for each unit of study. What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? A passionate interest in media (film,


TV production, advertising, the visual arts etc.) is essential. Tenacity: Each production will demand a great deal of commitment from you. You do not need to have any previous experience or knowledge of media production. We will teach you everything you will need to make a success of this course. You do not need to have your own equipment either. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? To be observant and analytical when looking at the work of other media content creators. Attention to detail. You will need to pay attention to each and every aspect of your productions, scriptwriting, sound recording and mixing, camera movement, lighting. Communication and team work. It takes more than one person to make a media production! You must be committed to developing strong communication skills. Creativity: You will be expected to think creatively at every stage of production from the beginning of the course. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*- C.

What are the lessons like? A range of teaching and learning styles is used during the course: group assignments, video presentations, practical demonstrations and tasks, research tasks, discussions, group and individual critiques, student presentations and student led production activities. 1:1 support is available to all students. Be creative and inventive with scriptwriting and media production techniques. Manage time efficiently to complete all creative, planning, practical and research tasks. Plan your work meticulously: make each image and sound meaningful. Keep your eyes open for inspiring sources at all times.


Be prepared and equipped for all lessons. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? The Digital Media course enables you to understand the production processes, industry and audience contexts within the media and produce several different types of media content, working on pre-production, filming and post production techniques, among other processes. A Level Film Studies offers the opportunity to explore a range of film styles, understand critical debates in Film and complete a relevant practical task. There is a mix of exams and coursework. A Level Media Studies enables you to explore and understand how the Media work and complete a relevant practical task. There is a mix of exams and coursework. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? This is a subject that complements a diverse range of other subjects, or can broaden an interest in Media and the Arts.

What do people do with a Digital Media Level 3 Extended Certificate? Past students have gone on to study degrees in TV and Video Production, Documentary Production, Digital Screen Arts, Scriptwriting, Video and Film Production, Critical and Historical Studies and Games Design. Some have found employment in the Media. Some students go on to an Art Foundation course. You can readily combine the course with A Levels to gain entry to an enormous range of higher education courses. In the past students have successfully applied to degree courses in Philosophy, History and Law, among others.


Health & social care CAMTEC Level 3 (Single) Certificate/Extended Certificate When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For two years. Equivalent to one A Level. What is this course about? This course looks at a number of topics that are related to working in health and/or social care. The course is vocational, which means it is most suitable for people who are seriously considering a career in a related field. What topics will I study? In the first year you will study: • Positive Relationships (assessed by coursework) • Equality and Diversity (assessed by exam) • Health, Safety and Security (assessed by exam) In the second year you will study:

• Public Health (assessed by coursework)

• Anatomy and physiology (assessed by exam)

• Nutrition (assessed by coursework)

Students will need to develop good independent study skills; individual research and portfolio work are at the heart of this course..


Are there any specific entry requirements? You need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C. What are the lessons like? Students will experience a range of teaching activities on the course, there is a lot of class discussion and small group work. 1:1 support is available to all students. What do students say about this course? “It’s hard work but very rewarding at the end.” “There are lots of resources that are useful for the course, which help it all come together.” “We really enjoyed practising skills like communication and first aid.” What have I got to do in order to do well? Keep up to date with the homework and portfolio deadlines and complete them to the best of your ability. Participate in all class activities, being prepared to put forward your own ideas and listen carefully to the views of others. Do some career related work experience.

Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? Students could consider the Cambridge Technical Level 3 Applied Science course if they are interested in career related to medicine or forensics. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? Lots of students take two A Levels with this course; if you want to be a teacher you should take a national curriculum subject; for nursing you should consider taking Biology A Level, A Level Psychology or CAMTEC Applied Science Degree courses in both nursing and teaching have an entry requirement of three A Levels. This course is worth equivalent to one A Level and so other courses alongside are essential if you are aiming for one of these professions. What do people do with a Health and Social Care CAMTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate? Enter into higher education for professions such as nursing, midwifery and teaching. Go directly into care work as a practitioner. You should always seek advice on subject combinations for specific career aims.


Health & social care CAMTEC Level 3 (Triple) Foundation Diploma/Extended Diploma When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For two years. Equivalent to three A Levels. What is this course about? Nursing and Midwifery This course is designed to lead students to higher education and careers in nursing and midwifery. More of the units will be focused on anatomy and health care. This, along with work experience placements, will influence the way lessons are taught in class. What topics will I study? What are the lessons like? Students will experience a range of teaching activities on the course. There is a lot of class discussion and small group work. Students will also be expected to give regular presentations of work to the class. Students will need to develop research and academic writing skills. Take advantage of the opportunities available on the work experience placement and additional voluntary work. Attend every session and remember that you are an ambassador for Worthing College. Most importantly you will need to develop professional characteristics which indicate a readiness to work in the Health and Social Care sector. This means you must take responsibility for their own learning and conduct. You will be expected to work independently and to put course responsibilities above personal interests, whether in the classroom or on a work placement. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? The Health and Social Care Level 3 Extended Certificate is offered, this is a two year course which is equivalent to one A Level. The Certificate course can be combined with other A Level or CAMTEC.


Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? The Extended Diploma is a full time course which cannot be combined with other A Level or CAMTEC. There will be an opportunity to retake a GCSE in English or Mathematics alongside this course and this will be a requirement if you have not got a grade 4 in each subject. What do people do with a Health and Social Care Cambridge Technicals Level 3 Extended Diploma? Most students take this course because they are interested in careers in nursing or midwifery.


Information Technology

CAMTEC Level 3 Certificate/Extended Certificate When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020.   For how long will I study? For two years. What is this course about? This course is intended as an applied general qualification and is the equivalent of one A Level. Students will be introduced to the study of the creation and use of IT systems as part of a digital world. Students will study a range of IT topics from the understanding of how IT is used across many industries to enhance productivity, to the use of Big Data to manipulate our viewing and buying habits. What topics will I study? Students will study a total of five units across two years to achieve the extended certificate. In year 1, students will study two mandatory units: • Fundamentals of IT • Global Information

In year 2, students will study one mandatory unit and one selected coursework unit: • Cyber Security • Product Development • Project Management How will my work be assessed? At the end of the first year students will take two exam papers, then at the end of the second year students will take one exam paper and submit coursework. Fundamentals of IT - tests students’ ability to answer short & extended questions in a written exam; 1 hour 30 minutes and worth 25% of Extended Certificate. Global Information - tests students’ ability to answer short and extended questions in a written exam. Students will answer questions on a case study that they have already seen: 1 hour 30 minutes and worth 25% of Extended Certificate. Cyber Security - tests students’ ability to answer short & extended questions in a written exam; 1 hour and worth 25% of Extended Certificate.


Internet of Everything - coursework completed over a set period of time using an investigation into the expanding world of hardware that is controlled over the internet as a foundation. Worth 25% of Extended Certificate. Product Development & Management - coursework completed over a set period of time using real life examples. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? Technology evolves at breakneck speed, so to stay ahead students need both enthusiasm and curiosity, and to be capable of experimentation and innovation. Students will be expected to engage in activities outside of the classroom to enhance their learning such as listening to pod casts, watching vlogs, and reading topical articles. A successful student of Information Technology is an enthusiast of technology who is always willing to go above and beyond to discover the latest technological advances.   Are there any specific entry requirements? You need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C, including grade 4 in English Language. What are the lessons like? A mixture of practical and theory lessons which prepare you for the

deep understanding of IT theory using a range of teaching styles. As students are assessed throughout the course, they must be highly organised and motivated to exceed expectations. Where students require support, our staff are on hand for subject support from day one either on a 1-to-1 basis or in smaller tutored groups. What do students say about this course? “I sat the IT GCSE and the exams for CAMTEC felt very familiar. Although we worked hard every lesson, we still had time to work on group projects which helped me understand the topics better. “Although I was worried about the written exam at first I knew that I could get extra help from my teachers if I wasn’t sure about something. I liked being able to practice questions for each topic in my ISP in my own time- when I got to the exam, I felt really prepared.” What have I got to do in order to do well? CAMTEC Information Technology covers a large breadth of areas. Students will need to be organised and enthusiastic in order to keep up to date with revision and coursework. Successful students are engaged with IT in and out of the classroom and often take part in our extra-


curricular activities such as iDEA and the Sussex Hackathon. Students will also have the opportunity to study towards CISCO Network professional qualifications to support their progression to Higher Education and /or employment. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? A Level Computer Science provides an appropriate alternative for students looking for an A Level option, or a course with more mathematical content. Both subjects may be studied together for students looking to specialise in the IT field. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? Popular combinations may include Computer Science, Business, Statistics, and Economics. Some students have also successfully combined this course with Graphic Communication.  What do people do with CAMTEC Information Technology Level 3? When taken alongside other Level 3 qualifications it could support further study in: • HND Computing HND Business • BA (Hons) Computing • BSc (Hons) Business Management • BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance Data / Systems Analysis • Network Management

Some university courses may require the achievement of specific units and students should always check the entry requirements for degree programs with specific higher education providers.


Music Practitioner RSL Level 3 Extended Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? One year for the Extended Certificate, two years for the Subsidiary Diploma. What is this course about? Equipping learners with the professional skills to develop realistic employment opportunities in the music industry and / or to progress to higher education. Learners will develop skills in: • Rehearsing and performing effectively on their instrument / voice. • Developing musicianship skills and repertoire. • Exploring contextual issues relating to music style, audience and the music industry. • Understanding and using music technology. What topics will I study? The qualification is built upon a system of units through which learners accumulate credits. The core units are Music Rehearsal Skills. Live music needs to

demonstrate a real passion for the performing arts. Performance, and Auditioning for Music. Appropriate additional units will be chosen, relevant to the needs and interests of the learners to reach the required level of credits. These additional units can be chosen from the pathways of Performance, Technology, Composition and Business How will my work be assessed? There is a mix of internal and external assessment. Unit grades are added together to give your final results: Pass, Merit or Distinction. Exceptional students are awarded Distinction*. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of activities including performance, written assignment, oral assessment, presentations, and assessment of practical competency. Are there any specific entry requirements? You need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C or Level 2 Extended Certificate at Merit or Distinction level and existing instrument or


vocal skills to grade 3-4 or equivalent. You will also need to demonstrate a real passion for the performing arts. What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? You must have good time management and independent study skills to be ready to meet the deadline demands of the course. You must have a keen interest in a wide range of Performing Arts and have a good range of performance skills. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? You will need to self- assess your own work and with your teachers’ help maximise your grades. Show good time management so assignments are completed on time and in line with your target grade. This includes being able to balance college, social and paid working commitments. Creativity and innovation are also skills students will be expected to develop as students will be tasked to create new performances and work. A willingness to get involved in the extra-curricular life of the Performing Arts academy. You will also be expected to continue to develop and prioritise your English and Maths skills.

Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? The Academy of Performing Arts also offer A Levels in Drama, Music and Dance and an RSL Diploma in Performing Arts which require some of the same skills but cover other specialisms within the courses. A Level qualifications do include formal written exams in their assessment. Can I study qualifications outside of the Performing Arts alongside a Performing Arts course? Yes. Many combinations of contrasting subjects are possible creating breadth and balance to your whole programme of study at the college. Our students often study Visual Arts & Media, English, Social Sciences, Sport or Law. However, skills that you gain working in Music Performance can be highly valuable as part of a programme of study. What are the lessons like? A range of teaching and learning styles is used during the course and a large proportion of the course is taught through practical performance activities. Formal lessons are combined with discussion, case studies, taskbased learning, practical activities, student- led activities, video and ILT. Teaching resources and course material are available on the Academy of Performing Arts blog.


What do people do with RSL Music Practitioner qualification? This qualification adds value to a wide range of progression opportunities in both higher education or employment in music performance or broader performing arts where combined with other courses offered through the Academy of Performing Arts in the College. Are there any additional costs? There is a studio fee payable at enrolment for all Performing Arts courses. The charge is ÂŁ40 per course, which covers all visiting companies, materials and workshops. All external trips are charged per show.


Sport BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma/Extended Diploma When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For two years. What is this course about? This course is an applied general qualification. It is for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning, and who aim to progress onto a range of routes, including higher education, apprenticeships and employment both here and abroad. Students will have the opportunity to develop practical, interpersonal and thinking skills that are vital for progression onto higher education, employment and apprenticeship opportunities, which put the student in a great position to develop as a person. In year one students will study seven units that have a vocational (practical) context to develop industry relevant skills within the sports sector. This will be followed by a further seven units in the second year. This qualification fits perfectly alongside any additional Academy of Sport provision.

What topics will I study? The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with employers, professional bodies, academics and Universities to ensure that it supports progression to positive progression routes. The qualification gives students the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the sport, health and active lifestyle sector to prepare them for their future careers. In the first year (Foundation Diploma) students will study the following units; • Unit 1: Anatomy & Physiology (externally assessed unit) • Unit 2: Fitness Training & Programming for Health, Sport & Well-being (externally assessed unit) • Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry • Unit 4: Sports Leadership • Unit 6: Sports Psychology • Unit 7: Practical Sport • Unit 9: Research Methods


From the knowledge gained in the first year, students will study the following in year two; • Unit 5: Application of Fitness Testing • Unit 8: Coaching for Performance • Unit 17: Sports Injury Management • Unit 18: Work Experience in Active Leisure • Unit 19: Development & Provision of Sport & Physical Activity (externally assessed unit) • Unit 22: Investigating Business in Sport & the Active Leisure Industry (externally assessed unit) • Unit 23: Skill Acquisition in Sport Therefore over the two years of study, students will be completing 14 units of work, which will allow the students to develop skills to enhance their opportunities to progress into either higher education, apprenticeships or employment. Over the two years students will be expected to complete work experience placements to provide a deeper understanding of the world of work within the sports sector. How will my work be assessed? Externally assessed units will be examination based or set tasks. These are available twice a year. Internally assessed units will be in a

range of methods including practical performance, written or typed documents, presentations, practical, professional conversations or synoptic assessments. Students will need to use knowledge from other units of study to complete detailed responses and provide a more holistic approach to their learning and development within the sports sector. Units 2, 19 & 22 are case study based exams, with Part A of the assessment being delivered a week before the exam. Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C including English Language & Maths. GCSE PE is very useful, but not compulsory. You will need to enjoy physical exercise as this will be embedded as part of the learning process. What are the lessons like? A range of teaching and learning styles are used during the course. Lessons are varied in their approach with group work, discussions, debate, practical activities, SMART technology and ICT. To allow students to realise their full potential the course has practical aspects that bring the theory to life. The use of iPads and SMART technology allow students to access resources and applications at the swipe of a touch screen. The majority of the course is continuously


assessed therefore students must be highly organised with a positive work ethic to ensure full success. Our excellent teaching staff are always on hand to support students during this course to provide an environment for success and progression. This can be in the form of 1:1 or group subject support.

Ability to manage time effectively in terms of college, sport and part time work balance to ensure success on this course.

What knowledge and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? Students need to have an interest and passion for sport and its different facets, particularly how sport affects performance in body, mind, health, fitness and nutrition. An interest and knowledge of a range of sports is desirable as well as current affairs in sport, which will allow students to understand the theory from their own knowledge and experiences.

What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? Ability to be organised in terms of in class and independent study to allow meeting of deadlines and course demands. The ability to self-assess their own work along with teacher support to maximise grades. Ability to work well within groups in a range of situations both theoretically and practically. Solid all round practical and sporting knowledge to apply to relevant units and maximise grades.

As the Foundation Diploma/ Extended Diploma is a full 3 A-Level equivalent programme students are not required to study another course with it. What do people do with Sport BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma? Sport is a fast growing industry with many different aspects. This course provides a wide range of study with many options for progression and development. This course is supported by universities with students going on to study at places like Loughborough, Leeds, Bath and more locally to the Universities of Chichester, Brighton, Southampton Solent & Bournemouth. Examples of higher education courses that have been studied by past students include; • BA (Hons) Sport Studies. • BA (Hons) Physical Education. • BA (Hons) Sport Journalism. • BA (Hons) Sport & Business Management. • BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Psychology. • BSc (Hons) Sport & Coaching Sciences. • BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science. • BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy.

Students could also progress within Worthing College to a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Health, Sport & Exercise Science as well as Apprenticeships in Sport & Activity Leadership, Personal Training and Learning Mentors.
