Why an apprentice is right for your business Employer: What are the costs of employing an apprentice?

South Downs Leisure Employer Testimonial

Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage, and many employers pay considerably more. In addition to the standard minimum wage age categories there is an Apprentice minimum wage rate for apprentices who are 16-18 and those aged 19 or over who are in the first year of an apprenticeship.

“South Downs Leisure currently manages 5 Leisure Centres in the borough and has been working in partnership with Worthing College to provide Apprenticeships since 2011. The shared vocational and NVQ educational programme is embedded into the succession planning of our organisation and offers candidates the opportunity of a direct route in to leisure employment. Currently we offer around 12 apprenticeships in a variety of leisure disciplines and with the support of Worthing College we anticipate this will grow over the coming years. Many of those who have completed the level 2 and level 3 placements now have full time paid positions, including 2 full time Duty Officers at South Downs Leisure Centre

Apprentices usually work for at least 30 paid hours a week.

You must pay your apprentice for time spent training or studying for a relevant qualification, while at work or at college. You must also offer apprentices the same conditions as other employees working at similar grades or in similar roles. See www.gov.uk and seach Apprenticeships for more details.

Apprenticeship training works harder for your business Employer: How is the apprenticeship training funded? The College is paid to deliver the apprentice training, dependent on the age of the apprentice the training can be fully funded or the employer is required to contribute to the training costs. The training of apprentices aged 16 to 18 is fully funded by the government. Apprentices aged 19 to 24 are funded at 50% and as employer you will be required to contribute £700 to their training. For apprentices aged 25 years or over please contact the College for more information. At the time of this prospectus going to print the government is offering grants to employers to recruit individuals aged 16 to 24 into employment though the apprenticeship programme. The AGE 16 to 24 grant for employers aims to support businesses, who would not otherwise be in a position to do so. If you are an employer with less than 50 employees, have not employed an apprentice within the last 12 months, and your apprentice(s) is aged 16 to 24 you may be eligible for a £1,500 apprenticeship grant (per apprentice, up to 5 grants in total). To discuss your eligibility for an apprentice grant please contact the College for more information. 8

The scheme has been successful for both Equiniti and apprentices, and we now have graduates of the scheme in full time roles at Equiniti.”
