Hello! Welcome to Haywards Heath College. Choosing where to further your education is a big decision. As such, I am passionate and committed to providing you with all the necessary information, advice and guidance about the offer to you as a prospective student here at the new Haywards Heath College. I hope this guide to applicants for September 2020 will be the start of your journey of decision making and that you will choose our college. This guide introduces you to the extensive A-level and vocational courses on offer. We will provide further details about exciting opportunities for Level 2 courses, apprenticeships and professional courses in due course via our website. With us, you will access the highest quality teaching, learning and support in meeting your individual needs in a college driven by its mission and values and a passionate community of staff. At the same time, you will have access to enriching experiences to extend your learning in and out of the classroom through engagement in a broad mix of opportunities as part of your student life. I would encourage you to come along to one of our open events, to be inspired, meet staff and see how we can meet your individual needs. Welcome to the new Haywards Heath College, part of the Chichester College Group. As the largest college group in Sussex, we are focused on championing excellence in teaching and learning for the local area. We are committed to ensuring students at all of our colleges are at the heart of everything we do. The education you receive is our number one priority. We are very proud of the group’s results, which include a 99.5% pass rate for A-levels at Chichester College and 99.1% pass rate at Worthing College in 2019. This reflects the commitment and passion of our staff, who go above and beyond every day for our students. We are grateful for the support from Sir Nicholas Soames MP, the local authorities and community, all of whom have championed the need for Mid Sussex to enjoy the benefits that further education institutions can bring. And we are passionate about delivering a broad post-16 curriculum for students across the region, as you will discover in the pages of this guide to Haywards Heath College. We are also working closely with businesses and organisations across the region to ensure we are delivering a diverse curriculum which also meets work force requirements. In addition we’ll be giving you the opportunity to learn and develop the skills you need for the career you want. YOUR STUDY facilities At Haywards Heath College, you’ll find a modern campus which is home to some fantastic facilities. There are also plenty of ways to enrich your learning experience. The Learning Resource Centre The Learning Resource Centre is a sanctuary for self-directed study and is well-stocked with books, newspapers, magazines, e-resources and all loans are free of charge. You can search the library catalogue over the internet, or come in and talk to our skilled and experienced library staff who will help with research. There are networked computers available to support your studies, as well as a wide range of online resources. This is a dynamic space for students to collaborate and learn. WiFi Haywards Heath College is a fully WiFi enabled college.

Food and drink The college offers a wide range of reasonably priced, healthy and delicious hot and cold menu options within a bright and airy space. There is also a vending area to pick up refreshments. Stationery General stationery and a comprehensive range of specialist materials will be available to help students with their studies. The Student Union The Student Exec office will be a creative and vibrant space to relax and meet friends.

At the heart of this is our engaging and challenging curriculum fused with an exciting range of enrichment and social activities, which include sports, trips and volunteering opportunities. Improve your skills and confidence to achieve your dream university place or dream job. Student Voice The Chichester College Group places student voice at the heart of everything it does – here at Haywards Heath College, it’s no different. We’ll be setting up a Student Union which will be run by a team of elected Student Executives from across the college. We encourage students to get involved in the student union, either as a course representative, member of the student executive or simply by joining a trip. The student union is all about YOU! It’s here for you, to listen to your views, make changes and to make sure your life at college is the best it can be.

Trips & Visits The student union runs a range of social activities, including things like trips to Thorpe Park, paintballing, social and fundraising events – as well as a host of experiences to enrich your studies, with visits to CERN, Bletchley Park and Winchester Science Centre among those you can get involved with. You’ll also have the opportunity to travel abroad with the annual ski trip or join volunteering trips to places like Costa Rica or Nepal. There will be so much to get involved in, make sure you don’t miss out!


Xtra + SU ​ he Chichester College Group is recognised T as one of the strongest Further Education Student Unions in the country and we’ll be bringing all that expertise to Haywards Heath College. Opportunities in the SU include: being a Course Rep or becoming a member of the Student Executive. You’ll learn skills to set you up for life and will look great on your CV and/or personal statement. Haywards Heath Xtra is designed to develop the social side of your college experience as well as developing new skills. Opportunities include: starting or joining clubs and societies, becoming a college ambassador, applying for a range of marketing intern posts or volunteering to help run a host of charity and social events.

SUPPORTING YOU THROUGH YOUR STUDIES From the moment you walk on to our campus we will provide you with the freedom, tools and support to develop and grow. You’ll be part of a modern, bustling, vibrant and connected community where everyone is supported, cared for and guided through your programme of study. Student Tutors Every student aged 16-19 will be assigned a student tutor, who you will meet with regularly. Through one-to-one discussions, tutors will monitor your progress, set targets, track achievement and support attendance. We place a real importance on student tutoring as we strongly believe it plays a vital role in helping our students to succeed. Our ACES Programme Our unique ACES (Attitude, Choices, Employability and Skills) programme has been developed to cultivate your development and will be tailored to you, as an individual. Delivered by our student tutors through a series of interactive workshops, it will guide you through your college journey as well as inspire and inform your future. It will cover a range of topical discussions, including environmental issues, relationships, respect and tolerance, personal wellbeing and social media. They will also work with you to cement your professional development. 8

Student Welfare The wellbeing of all of our students is extremely important to us, which is why we provide a number of services to support you. Student Finance Our Student Finance team provides specialist and confidential advice and guidance on a range of financial services which include bursaries, advanced learner loans and travel.

ACADEMIES Our aim is to create specialist academies to offer a range of enriching and inspiring opportunities and activities that support and extend learning, build self-confidence, reward achievement and promote ambitious progression and employability. The academies will be embedded within the curriculum in Performing Arts, Visual Arts, STEM and Sport. Our experience tells us, that the academy model, enriches a student’s college experience as students work hard and play hard together, many making friends for life. Being part of an academy also helps to develop essential skills for life like planning and organisation, communication, personal resilience and teamwork. Great experience too for your CV or personal statement for progression to employment or university! Keep up to date with the development of the academies over the course of this year via our website and social media channels.

ASPIRE PROGRAMME The Aspire Programme offers additional support and guidance to high achieving students who are aiming to secure places at the more competitive universities and/or courses like medicine, law, nursing, teaching, dentistry and veterinary medicine. The Aspire Programme aims to enhance and enrich the experience of all students by providing stimulating activities to support academic studies; to expand knowledge and understanding by providing the following opportunities: Nuffield Science Placements, Maths and Science Olympiads, the STEM Academy, Debating Competitions, Sussex Study Experience and the Sport, Visual and Performing Arts Academies. To inspire and support our most able students to make successful applications to competitive universities with: Visiting Speakers, Conferences and Open Days, Sussex University Open Lecture Programme, Sutton Trust Summer Schools, Student Shadowing Schemes, University Master-classes. “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.� Malcom X

We provide access to careers and higher education fairs, as well as arrange talks, visits and guest speakers - all demonstrating the choices available to you as well as deliver workshops that will help you to develop the life skills which will prepare you for future work or study.
