Health and Social Care CAMTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate Equivalent to 1 A Level
When would the course start? September 2018. For how long will I study? For two years. Equivalent to one A Level. What is this course about? This course looks at a number of topics that are related to working in health and/or social care. The course is vocational, which means it is most suitable for people who are seriously considering a career in a related field. What topics will I study? In the first year you will study: • Positive Relationships (assessed by coursework) • Equality and Diversity (assessed by exam) • Health, Safety and Security (assessed by exam) In the second year you will study: • Public Health (assessed by exam) • Anatomy and physiology (assessed by exam) • Phycology for health and social care (assessed by coursework)
How will my work be assessed? Two units are internally assessed and two units are externally assessed by exam. The unit grades are added together to give you your final results: Pass, Merit, or Distinction. Exceptionally talented students are awarded a Distinction*. What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? Students are not expected to have studied any of the topics on this course previously but must have a genuine interest in Health and Social Care. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? Students will need a lively and enquiring mind, a willingness to explore new ideas and the ability to communicate their ideas effectively. Students will need to develop good independent study skills; individual research and portfolio work are at the heart of this course.
Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 or A*- C. Individual Level 3 subjects may have further entry requirements and these will be advised to you at your Course Guidance meeting once we receive your application. What are the lessons like? Students will experience a range of teaching activities on the course, there is a lot of class discussion and small group work. 1:1 support is available to all students. What do students say about this course? “It’s hard work but very rewarding at the end.” “There are lots of resources that are useful for the course, which help it all come together.” “We really enjoyed practising skills like communication and first aid.” What have I got to do in order to do well? Keep up to date with the homework and portfolio deadlines and complete them to the best of your ability. Participate in all class activities, being prepared to put forward your own ideas and listen carefully to the views of others.
Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? Students could consider the CAMTEC Level 3 Applied Science course if they are interested in career related to medicine or forensics. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? Lots of students take two A Levels with this course; if you want to be a teacher you should take a national curriculum subject; for nursing you should consider taking Biology A Level or A Level Psychology. Degree courses in both nursing and teaching have an entry requirement of three A Levels. This course is the equivalent to one A Level and so other courses alongside are essential if you are aiming for one of these professions. You should ask for advice as to whether this should be a CAMTEC Level 3 or A Level course. What do people do with a Health and Social Care CAMTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate? • Enter into higher education for professions such as nursing, midwifery and teaching. • Go directly into care work as a practitioner. • You should always seek advice on subject combinations for specific career aims.
Health and Social Care CAMTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Equivalent to 3 A Level
When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2018. For how long will I study? For two years. Equivalent to three A Levels. What is this course about? There are two pathways students can take on this course: Pathway 1: Nursing and Midwifery This pathway is designed to lead students to higher education and careers in nursing and midwifery. More of the units will be focused on anatomy and health care. This, along with work experience placements, will influence the way lessons are taught in class. Pathway 2: Social Care and Education This pathway is designed to lead students to higher education and careers in the children and young people’s workforce, social work and primary teaching. During the course students will study a range of units and undertake work experience which will prepare them for their chosen career.
What topics will I study? The following units are common to both pathways in the first year of the course: • Positive Relationships (assessed by coursework) • Infection Control (assessed by coursework) • Equality and Diversity (assessed by exam) • Health, Safety and Security (assessed by exam) • Anatomy and Physiology (assessed by exam) • Safeguarding (assessed by exam) In the second year the units are more specialised and may include: • The impact of long term physiological conditions (assessed by exam) • Psychology for health and social care (assessed by coursework) Two units are work experience units. These will include attending a work experience placement for one day a week throughout most of the course. How will my work be assessed? Some units are assessed by coursework and some units are assessed by exams.
What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? For the work experience placement you will need to complete and pay for a DBS (Disclosing and Barring Services) check; you need to do this before starting the course. What are the lessons like? Students will experience a range of teaching activities on the course. There is a lot of class discussion and
small group work. Students will also be expected to give regular presentations of work to the class. Students will need to develop good independent study skills: individual research and portfolio work are at the heart of this course. What do students say about this course? “It’s hard work but very rewarding in the end.” “You have a chance to put into practice the theory you learn from class. The work experience encourages you to use your skills in an effective and professional way.” “Learning how to do presentations really helped me when I was doing job interviews.” “The Paris trip was really fun but also helped me learn.” What have I got to do in order to do well? Student must take advantage of the opportunities given to them on the work experience placement. Attend every session and remember that they are an ambassador for Worthing College. Most importantly students will need to develop professional characteristics which indicate a readiness to work in the Health and Social Care sector. This means students must take responsibility for their own learning and conduct. Students will be expected to work independently and to put
course responsibilities above personal interests, whether in the classroom or on a work placement. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so how do I choose between them? The Health and Social Care Level 3 Extended Certificate is offered, this is a two year course which is equivalent to one A Level. The Certificate course can be combined with other A Level or CAMTEC courses. Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? The Extended Diploma is a full time course which cannot be combined with other A Levels or CAMTEC Courses. There will be an opportunity to retake a GCSE in English or Mathematics alongside this course and this will be a requirement if you have not got a grade 4 in each subject. What do people do with a Health and Social Care CAMTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma? Most students take this course because they are interested in a career in nursing and midwifery, the children and young people’s workforce, social work or primary teaching. Most of these careers require you to go to university but some students have progressed directly to work in the care sector, working in places such as care homes and nurseries.
Previous students have also used health and social care qualifications to study a wide range of courses at university including youth work, criminology, psychology and occupational therapy.
