French A Level When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2018.

How will my work be assessed? By exams at the end of the course.
What is this course about? The course aims to develop your understanding of the language and culture of France and other French speaking countries.
Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing - Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
What topics will I study? 1. Social issues and trends: • The changing nature of family: family & relationships • The ‘cyber-society’: Internet, social medial, technology • The place of voluntary work • Positive features of a diverse society • Life for the marginalized • How criminals are treated • Positive aspects of diversity • Life of marginalised people • Crime and prevention 2. Artistic and political culture • A culture proud of its heritage • Contemporary francophone music • Cinema: the 7th art form • Teenagers, the right to vote and political commitment • Demonstrations, strikes – who holds the power? • Politics and immigration
Paper 2: Writing - Duration: 2 hours Paper 3: Speaking - Duration: 18 minutes What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? An interest in France and French speaking countries is very important. A willingness to express yourself orally is essential. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? You will need to develop good independent study skills. You will need to develop your powers of oral expression to succeed in the oral component of the examination.
Are there any specific entry requirements? Level 3 courses - You will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 9-4 or A*- C. Individual Level 3 subjects may have further entry requirements and these will be advised to you at your Course Guidance meeting once we receive your application. What are the lessons like? A range of teaching and learning styles is used during the course and the lessons are very varied. In order to practise the five language skills you will work individually, in pairs and in groups at different times. You will spend about half your lesson time in the language laboratory, completing listening exercises, speaking tasks, working on-line and word-processing written work. 1:1 support is available to all students. What have I got to do in order to do well? Complete your weekly homework on time and to the best of your ability. Work consistently and thoroughly. Correct your work regularly and learn from what you have done. Work independently to consolidate your knowledge. What do people do with A Level French? French is a recognised academic subject and therefore is an excellent preparation for higher education in languages as well as a number of other areas such as Business, Law, and European Studies. Past students can be also be found in media, journalism and tourism. It is the necessary background for careers in teaching French at both primary and secondary levels. Students with language qualifications are sought after by employers and this is reflected in enhanced salaries.

There is a wide choice of degree courses focusing on various aspects of Spanish studies, combined degrees such us Business and Spanish, Law and Spanish, and European Studies, which combines cultural, social and language studies. A year studying in a Spanish speaking country usually forms part of the degree course.

How will my work be assessed? The course is made up of eight units. Five are internally assessed and three are externally assessed. The internal assessments are set and marked by teachers and the external assessments are marked by the exam board. The final grade awarded will be a

We use a wide range of teaching methods throughout the course including presentations, discussions,
group work and lots of independent research. As much of the course is coursework based, you will often be working on assignments during lessons. You will also do role-plays and practical work developing a range of vocational skills. 1:1 support is available to all students. You need to complete all work set, keep up to date, listen, participate and attend all lessons.
Are there any other qualifications which combine particularly well with this one? This is equivalent to 2 A Level subjects so you would normally combine it with 1 other A Level or equivalent. Experience has shown a very wide range of combinations to be successful. Also, as an additional part of your Travel and Tourism course you can take an industrial qualification: IATA. What do people do with BTEC Level 3 Travel and Tourism? Previous students have obtained employment at airports working for airlines and ground staff. Some are working within various tour operators in the UK. Others have found employment on management training schemes in the hospitality industry. Many students choose to go onto higher education to study a range of tourism related degrees. Students have also progressed into careers not directly related to the travel industry. These have included law, teaching, finance and the general business sector. Additional Information about this course You will have a work experience week in each year which is a compulsory element of the course and will provide the evidence for one of the units you will study.
There are a range of day trips linked to units studied in both years and the possibility of an overseas residential trip in each year.

Additional IATA Qualification When do I start studying for the IATA qualification? In the first year of your BTEC L3 National Diploma in Travel and Tourism. What is the IATA course about? The course will give an introduction to the travel industry with a focus on the airline sector. What topics will I study? There are five units within the course each of which have a pack to work through. The units include: • The world of air. • Airline destinations. • Flight information. • Travel information. • Airline booking systems. • Fares and flight documents. How will my work be assessed? You will be assessed by an external examination. The exam is one hour with 40 multiple choice questions. The exam is taken online and is open book. What are the lessons like? Students will work through an information pack and carry out the activities within them. You work at your own pace, lessons are not like traditional lessons. 1:1 support is available to all students.
