BROADWATER SPORTS
Foreword Paul Riley College Principal It is perhaps poetic justice that in the year in which we celebrate the 10 year anniversary of our Sports Academy provision we have had what seems to me to be have been the most successful year to date in terms of the multitude of cup and league successes enjoyed by our teams. It is becoming a consistent pleasure to see students holding aloft their winners medals and trophies whilst wearing the academy kits with pride. However, what has struck me this year more than ever is the stories I regularly hear from the coaches that are centred on the pride they feel from not only their teams’ successes but the perseverance, commitment and dedication of the students to being the best they can be.
A year in which we are the County Champions in Netball, Women’s Football and both 1st and 2nd team Men’s Football, for one College to win 4 of the five County Cups is an amazing achievement by both players and coaches. The efforts that all the academy coaches go to is second to none. The work that goes on behind the scenes in encouraging the most talented players to come and do their education at Worthing College, the opportunities, in terms of competitions entered, National Trials, and support given to the academy students really does mean that the coaches go above and beyond at all times.
I spoke to a parent at the final of the boys Under 19 Sussex Schools Football Association County Cup final recently and she said to me that Worthing College and the Sports Academy had been ‘really good for her son who had enjoyed his time at the college so much’. I couldn’t have felt prouder of the staff she was praising and for the Sports Academy as a whole, which has clearly had such an impact not only on her son but on hundreds of students over the last 10 years.
The AoC National Championships were again an amazing weekend with the college being represented by the Netball Academy and the Women’s Rugby making up the majority of the SE Rugby Squad, coupled with Alex Fox representing the South East in Tennis. Looking forward to taking more students next year in other sports. Again a massive thank you to Sarah Briggs for giving non academy students the opportunity to participate in the AoC Regional Championships.
I would encourage every reader of this publication to recognise that it is not the trophies, medals and accolades that will be the enduring legacy of membership of the Sport Academy, but the friendships, personal resilience, confidence and self-worth , together with the love of sport that will stay with the students and serve them so well for the future.
The evening also celebrates our apprenticeship programme, where we make an award to the sports apprentice of the year for their contribution both in and out of College.
I hope you will join me in being a celebrant and ambassador for our unrivalled Sports Academy in saying thank you to all the staff, partners, parents and carers and students involved for all their passion and commitment to the unparalleled success of the Sports Academy over this and the last 10 years. Tina Price Academy of Sport Co-ordinator Welcome to the annual Sports Awards Evening where we are here to celebrate probably the best year of sport in the history of the Academy of Sport.
Have a great evening. Paul Amoo Chair of Governors To all the students It’s a time for celebration as you have completed what you set out to do i.e. achieve sporting success. It’s a time for reflection as you ponder whether you gave of your best during this last year. It’s a time for hoping that the future is indeed all you dream it will be. It’s a time to look around you and appreciate how far you have come and how much you have matured. It’s a time to say thank you to all those who have supported you during this last year. It’s a time to say to yourself ‘well done and I’m proud of me’.

AoC National Championships This year the 40th AoC National Championships, one of the largest annual sporting events in England, were held in Nottingham (University of Nottingham). Worthing College had 19 students qualify for the Championships representing the South East in netball, women’s rugby and tennis. They competed all weekend against the other 9 regions producing some great performances and results.
side. Some notable performances from the side included wins against Wales and the West Midlands. The South East side won 4 and lost 4 of their 8 matches to finish in 5th place.
Our tennis player, Alex Fox was outstanding throughout the whole weekend where he teamed up well with the other players from Peter Symonds to make up the South East team. Alex was a major part in the team event and secured a bronze medal, a fantastic achievement.
The weekend is a celebration of college sport with over 1600 students attending and going up against each other across 16 different sports. As well as competing in their chosen sport, students competed for points for their region. The Wilkinson Sword, given to the region with the most points accumulated over all the events, was won by the South East region.
The Netball squad had an extremely positive tournament and some great highlights, including an 18-15 win against Hartpury College. The girls worked tirelessly over both days and missed out on a Bronze medal by only one point.
Many thanks to Tina Price, Mark Rugman and the rest of the staff for taking the students. The feedback from the students was that it was a great weekend of fun and competition at a high standard.
The women’s rugby SE side was made up of seven Worthing College players, with Teya Ashworth and Lucy Relf being made joint captains of the

Basketball Academy 6
Worthing College Basketball Academy had their mindset tested throughout this season, which has been a major part of their development. Worthing started the season with a defeat away to Henley, a real learning curve for the team and the new team coach Julian Stanley. After this game the boys had a couple of games to re group ready for the AoC Regional Tournament in Aldershot, in which Worthing secured their first wins of the season winning 2 out of their 4 games. Worthing then faced Brockenhurst away in the cup the following Monday, but suffered a tough loss to a talented team. That same week the boys travelled to Collyers, which was a real highlight of the season, after going down 20 points in the 1st quarter Worthing completed an amazing comeback to win by 15. After this game Worthing went on a bit of a winning streak beating Bexhill and Henley
in consecutive weeks, beating Henley at home was another highlight of the season after loosing to them in the 1st match up. Worthing had 2 tough battles with BHASVIC throughout the year but couldn’t defeat the talented Brighton side. The final highlight of the season was when the team travelled away to ABL south champions team Erith, although the boys lost they played brilliantly against very strong opposition. The squad will be losing some key members this year, however the future is bright with the current 1st years and their development. I would like to thank every player for their efforts this year and I really hope they learnt as much from me as I have learnt from them, we should be very proud of the improvements we have made. Men’s Football Academy This season the Men’s Football Academy were looking to build on a positive season last time out, with the targets of trying to again maintain ECFA National League status (top Colleges’ league in England) and look to reclaim the SSFA County Cup for an impressive third year in a row. To enhance the development and experiences of the players further, the squad travelled out to Villafranca, Verona, Italy for the second year of a European training camp, which was supported by another excellent S&C programme, delivered by Harry and Nathan from the Sussex Performance Centre. The start to the ECFA (1st XI) National Premier League programme a talented squad got dealt a harsh lesson; losing 6-0 at home on the opening day to an efficient Pro Direct London side. The AoC (2nd XI) SE Regional League side again took their place in the second tier of English Colleges’ Football again many 1st XIs and started with a positive 4-3 win away to Merrist Wood College. 8
Whilst the players in the Academy were developing and getting used to the high levels of performance required results were not coming their way. The first five ECFA National League games came with defeats, which is something that had never happened before. After a 2-0 defeat away to rivals Portsmouth College saw a turning point with players and coaching staff coming together with a plan of action. From this the squad were invigorated and went on a run of winning 10 out of 12 games in all competitions. Highlights included a spirited penalty shootout win against Thomas Bennett, after playing 90 minutes with 10 men, a demolition of Varndean (8-2) with some of the best attacking football that the academy has seen and Farnborough (3-1), where I have never seen a team so “in the zone” for a game, so exciting to watch. Meanwhile the AoC XI were going about their business with some outstanding results with 6-1 wins against Isle of Wight College
and Collyers 1st XI being major highlights in terms of how their game intelligence is developing and the performance going to the next level. The ESFA National Cup was not at the Quarter Final stage and we faced Hartpury College, who are arguably the best Football side in England. They hadn’t lost in the competition for 3 and a half years until they faced a determined and quality Worthing College performance. Jack Newhouse sent Worthing through 1-0, which capped a great couple of days away with the squad. Memories made for a lifetime! This was made even more impressive as this was Worthing Colleges’ second game of that week, after a Lewis Broughton last minute goal took the side to the Semi Finals of the County Cup. Time to re-charge the batteries and with the help of Nathan and Harry from SPC as well as Tina and Assistant Coach Jimmy Punter the squad travelled to Italy to experience a fantastic training complex, combined with training and high quality matches it really added to the programme and player experience. As the season drew to a close the ECFA XI travelled to Shenfield High School, who had made ESFA National Finals for the last three years. In a game of little quality it was a set piece that undid Worthing College to bow out 1-0. To their credit the squad bounced back with a 3-2 County Cup Final win against Bedes. The AoC XI were on a great run winning 13 out of their final 14 games, which resulted in a minimum 2nd place finish in the AoC SE Regional League and in a penalty shootout win in the SSFA County Cup Final again against a Bedes side. Jack Spence-DeBoer making two outstanding saves in the shootout. Across the last six SSFA County Cup Finals (3 1st XI and 3 2nd XI) Worthing College have won 5 out of the 6, firmly placing them as one of the best College programmes around. A great testament to the players and their work ethic and playing ethos.
9
With these squad successes also comes individual honours. No fewer than 11 of the squad represented Sussex FA and Sussex Schools this season, with the FA side retaining their SEYCL League crown. Fintan Walsh, Matt Boiling & Ricky Aguiar represented England Colleges’, which included the Caput Mundi Tournament in Rome and the Anglo-Welsh Shield, which they were victorious in. Matt Boiling won player of the tournament in Rome and Fintan Walsh was named England Captain as well as being England’s player of the season, an outstanding achievement.
To conclude I would like to thank the players for their efforts, application and how they have developed not only as players, but as people also. Jimmy Punter for being my assistant coach, who again has been an outstanding asset to the programme. Steve Braybrook for all his support with the players and developing their mentality, which I feel has been a real catalyst for the squads development. Nathan, Tom and Harry from the Sussex Performance Centre for all their work with the players and all the Academy staff for their support. Written by Dave Hall

Women’s Football Academy At the time of writing we are heading into our final fixture of the season, the county cup final against BHASVIC, providing us with the perfect opportunity to finish the season on a high. An overall positive league campaign resulted in a mid-table finish, culminating in a subsidiary play off semi-final away at Bridgewater and Taunton in Somerset – many thanks must go to Colin for his commitment in getting us to and from the fixture. Unfortunately, after dominating for the whole 90 minutes, we were knocked out 5-4 on penalties, as we were unable to break the deadlock in normal time. That aside, there have been many positive highlights to look back upon this season, including some excellent performance against Newman, Easton & Otley and Merrist Wood, in some cases producing a number of resounding victories. It has been a pleasure working with the team and witnessing the players’ continued development, even over the course of just this season. Written by Amy Merricks 12

Netball Academy What an outstanding year for the Netball Academy. It started in October with the Sussex Schools tournament at Brighton University, where the girls won every game, comprehensively beating both netball strongholds of Brighton College and Hurstpierpoint College. The next major victory was in the Hampshire League where we beat the mighty Peter Symonds College by one goal, the first college to beat them on their turf in five years. Following on from this was the AoC South East Championship in December where Peter Symonds were determined to get their revenge. Sadly for them it was not to be and Worthing beat them in the final by 1 goal, coming back from a 4 goal deficit at half time to reach the AoC National Finals for the first time. January saw a visit to Farnborough for the South Region round of National Schools, a competition we have got to on a number of occasions but fallen at the last hurdle. This year however was different, a tremendously strong performance from the whole squad to beat Wellington College in the semi final and Hurst in the final was an amazing achievement and took us to the National Finals in March. This was a day we will never forget as the games were played in a blizzard and a wind chill factor of -8. The girls were again on top form to reach the semi finals and top four in the country. 14
The girls continued to win all their Hampshire and Sussex League games winning both of these titles at the end of the season. All members of the netball academy played their part in these league titles. In March we also had a very close Sussex Cup Semi Final, beating Hurstpierpoint College by 6 goals to then go on and beat Brighton College very comprehensively in the final. As amazing as all of the above was, the highlight of the season was representing the South East at the AoC National Championships in Nottingham in April. The girls just missed out on the bronze medal by 1 point, finishing 4th overall, having beaten Hartbury, drawing with Exeter and Seevic during the weekend. The girls were a pleasure to spend the weekend with and totally embraced the occasion, supporting Alex Fox at the Tennis on the Friday and taking part in all the activities Saturday night. Over the year, the whole netball academy have worked tirelessly to achieve all these major honours and made the job of selection a very difficult one. I would like to thank every single one of the girls for their efforts and Sarah Briggs who has gone above and beyond her role to umpire and support me all season. Written by Tina Price

Men’s Rugby Academy This year was one of the most rewarding coaching experiences I’ve had to date. A small squad showed big hearts and performed above expectations in an ever changing and more demanding rugby landscape. While on paper a year without silver wear may seem negative, coming second in a very competitive league was a huge achievement for this group. Pleasingly the challenges of the year have fuelled a refocussing of all things rugby and we will all be better players, coaches and administrators as a result. Although they don’t know it yet, things are going to get harder for the rugby squad as the coaches turn up the pressure, increase the challenge, so the players will bring more heart, lungs and intelligence to every session, in short bring the ‘juice!’ The group was ably captained by Connor, showing the skills all good leaders aspire to attain. Intelligent, hard working and 18
empathetic to the needs of his constituents he presided over an incredible improvement in performance from years beginning to end. Supported by a number of senior players the group adapted well to changes bringing more from the group than previously expected possible. There were countless moments, incidents and injuries that punctuated the year. If it was painfully funny for me it was probably just painful for the players, but I’m okay with that, because tough moments breed tough people. We’re not nearly the toughest team nor are we the toughest team we can be! That leaves room for improvement, that’s a good place for any coach to be in, room for development, growth and improvement. Here’s to more thinking, more endeavour and definitely more meetings with Hennie Muller. Written by Ben Coulson

Women’s Rugby Academy 15s and a home game! “To compete at the highest level in the UK was a great experience for the girls” A great introduction to the Women’s Rugby programme this year was a series of 15s games. In the past, the odd 15s games was tried, but nothing to focus training and attention on. However, the College competed in a total of eight competitive 15s fixtures in 2017/2018. Highlights including beating a Sussex County XV select at the start of the season, Hartpury College (!) and Exeter College in our first home fixture in 4 years!!! Also, it may have been a tough lesson when the team ventured up North to play Loughborough College before a Tyrells Premiership fixture, however to compete at the highest level in the UK was a great experience for the girls. “The 15s format is a great addition to our programme, and with 20 new players looking to join the programme next year, it looks like it is here to stay!” Holland Tour “What a great experience for these young women”! The annual tour to Holland saw the introduction of a mini tournament between Holland and Belgium. Belgium with two teams were a tough organised 2nd tier outfit, however two separate Worthing sides produced two 20
outstanding victories showcasing some excellent 7s skills. The Holland match, on paper, was always going to be the tester for this team, and unfortunately Holland were just too strong for us. However for a College to compete against a Country, and be competitive to the point where the girls are gutted they lost, shows ambitions and determination. Credit also goes to Women of the Tour Catherine Wakeford who added great value to the trip and was versatile in her 7s position during the event. “What a great experience for these young women and we can only get better as a result of this kind of exposure. The group are definitely better placed to take on the established order of English rugby because of this week and it’s going to be interesting watching the development from this point forward.”
Rosslyn Park National School 7s “Devastated that they couldn’t beat eventual winners Loughborough College” Rosslyn Park was an opportunity to showcase our 7s talent. In the group stages the girls really showed they were one of the favourites for this prestigious competition, comfortably beating two Welsh Colleges Coleg Sir Gar and Neath Port Talbot. Next up in the group stage was SGS Filton, who Worthing hadn’t beaten for the last couple of seasons. However, in a pulsating game Worthing eventually came out on top, topping the group and advancing to the knockout stages. In the semi-final, Worthing played Loughborough College, who unfortunately were fresher and stronger than Worthing, and went on to win the overall competition. “The girls showed great spirit at Rosslyn Park, and it shows how far the girls have come when they are all absolutely devastated that they couldn’t beat eventual winners Loughborough College” Harlequins Ladies “Something they will cherish for the rest of their life” During 2017/2018 we continued to develop a partnership with Harlequins Ladies RFC. Trips up to Surrey Sports Park, Gary Street providing guest coaching sessions and an open dialogue between the two establishments, provided a great opportunity for a number of the girls to be involved in a Premiership Club. Congratulations to Martina Giampaglia, Destiny Jordan Field, Emily Hird, Isobel Mayhew, Roberta Haywood and Megan Brown who all played their part for Harlequins. Special mention goes to Roberta, Megan and Izzy who shared 13 Premiership Caps between them. For a 17/18 year old to compete at this level takes dedication, hardwork and a great deal of talent. Well done ladies! “It’s been a fantastic journey for all the girls involved with Harlequins this year. For Bobbie and Izzy to play, be a part of, and even score in front of 4,500 people is an experience they will never forget. Something they will cherish for the rest of their life”. 21
AoC South East “Worthing College’s Women’s Rugby program remains the strongest in the South East” Even though a number of players were unavailable through different competitions the South East team was still able to field a strong squad bolstered by Worthing College. The team was fully competitive in all fixture, winning 4 and losing 4. Congratulations to Tatum Gabriel, Emily Hird, Zoo Overton, Aimee Porter, Teya Ashworth, Lucy Relf, and Nadia Bral for making the squad. “For the College to have such a high representation in the South-East team again, shows the Women’s Rugby program remains the strongest in the South East. Over 40+ female players attended trials for the squad and to have seven out of eleven, plus five girls unavailable for selection due to being picked for Harlequins RFC, shows the depth in the Women’s rugby programme”. Christ Hospital 7s “The current crop of players have some real potential in the 7s game” The first 7s win of the season came at the prestigious Christ Hospital 7s. With a number of girls unavailable due to Harlequins commitments, it was an opportunity for the younger players to step up. In the group stage Worthing racked up a total of 3 wins out of 3, scoring 112 points and conceding just 14. Worthing then swept aside hosts Christ Hospital in the semi finals to play Reigate Grammar, which Worthing won 28-10. “We set ourselves a number of individual and team goals, therefore to put together five excellent performances, whilst still developing creative, resilient and game aware players, shows the adaptability and progress of these players. The current crop of players have some real potential in the 7s game, and I look forward to the rest of the season”. AoC National Women’s Cup “I am so proud of the journey each player in the programme has made, and for them to peak at the right time is a credit to their hard-work, determination and perseverance”. The final tournament of the season was the 22
AoC National Women’s Cup, which with along with Rosslyn Park, is the pinnacle of any AoC College team in the UK. Pressure was riding high for the girls, as they set out the goal at the beginning of the season to win one of the National Cups, therefore to lose this would have meant an unsuccessful season. On the day Worthing coped brilliantly with the pressure of the event, and to win three brilliant games shows the distance the girls have travelled. The first try against Hartpury will go down as one of the best team tries since the Womens rugby team began, with some neat handling putting Aimee Porter down the wing to score (minus a boot!). Also the game against Exeter showed real grit and determination, as the girls were able to bounce back from a barrage of Exeter pressure in the first half to win the game comfortably. “The AoC National Women’s Cup is one of the “major” trophies on the Women’s Rugby FE circuit and to finish third in one and win another shows that this Worthing College team has some of the best players in the country. I am so proud of the journey each player in the programme has made, and for them to peak at the right time is a credit to their hard-work, determination and perseverance. Credit goes to all the players but especially Emily Hird, who has captained the side through good and bad times over the last couple of years, and has led them on this epic journey. I wish all the girls who are leaving this year, all the best for the future, and I will be looking forward to seeing them continue their rugby journey representing Universities and Premiership teams and of course England!” Written by Mark Rugman

Apprentice of the Year
Sports & Activity Leadership Apprentice
Jonny is an Activity Leader at Downsbrook Junior School and has had a very challenging time at a school which was put into special measures very soon after he started. This has not thwarted Jonny and very quickly he became a valued member of staff. Jonny has taken PE lessons and updated the lesson plans which he was given, to ensure he leaves a legacy for whoever comes in next year. He also spends time with a young man with educational needs, which is outside his remit for sport. Jonny has attended every CPD course offered to him and taken what he has learnt back in the school. In addition, Jonny has taken his coaching badges in Basketball, Rugby and swimming as well as continuing to play Rugby for the College Academy.
Lucy Paine Sports & Activity Leadership Apprentice
Lucy is an Activity Leader at Heene Junior School, where she has played an active role in the PE both in the curriculum and after school. Lucy is highly thought after at the school and has been singled out for special praise by the Head Teacher. She has worked alongside the PE technician at the school and has lead lessons due to his absence. Lucy took the opportunity offered to her and is currently doing her FA level 2 coaching badge. When observing Lucy, she is always positive and cheerful with all the children and an excellent role model
Nyasha Muzhange Personal Trainer Apprentice
Nyasha is a personal trainer apprentice and he has taken full advantage of what the apprenticeship has to offer, in terms of experience and working towards the Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification. Nyasha has numerous clients, both staff and students from the college and time and time again I am told how good he is and how hard he has made them work. He works far more hours than his contract demands and always is happy and smiling. In addition Nyasha has supported the college in open evenings and more recently has worked additional hours supporting the caretakers of an evening.

Mark Sambrook Award In 2017 the College and the community lost a highly valued teacher, mentor and friend; Mark Sambrook. Mark had a massive impact on so many young people and his values of hard work, determination, endeavour, respect, bravery, chivalry and sportsmanship have been instilled in so many. The list of the man’s qualities are endless and to remember this the annual Mark Sambrook Award will be given to a student who has shown these qualities and more, therefore fitting to the memory of Mark. Its with great pleasure that his family are also in attendance to present the award this year, so welcome to Carol and the rest of the Sambrook family.
Nominees Ryan Macmillan Men’s Rugby
Ryan started Yr12 in the first XV side that ultimately went on to win the National League play off. He played in the historic win over Portsmouth Grammar school in the NatWest Cup everything was looking towards Ryan being a 2 year Blue however he unfortunately had a bad knee injury in late 2016. Prior to this he was keeping much more experienced and well known players out of the side, showing what dedication and a desire to learn could achieve. A knee reconstruction in March 2017 put him out for 12 months unfortunately ruling him out of any involvement in the season. However he attended every training session, filmed fixtures, helped with kit and equipment every week at matches and trained as hard as any player in the squad during his rehabilitation. He is exactly what every coach desires and every athlete should aspire to be. Ryan is hungry, humble and undeniably hard working, his application is unwavering and even when he knew he couldn’t wear the jersey, he supported everyone to the fullest.
Jacqueline-Anne Goldsmid Women’s Football
Jacqui during her time at Worthing College has shown great diligence in both her studies and performance with the Women’s Football Academy, being part of the County Cup winning squads for the last two seasons and their ECFA National League campaigns. In the classroom Jacqui has also excelled and is looking like achieving A-A* in her A Levels of Maths with Decision, Biology & Psychology. In addition to this Jacqui completed an Extended Project and is looking to read Psychology at Oxford University, which shows her determination to be a success both in the classroom and on the football field
Jed Dossett Men’s Football
Jed has been an outstanding individual over the last two years at Worthing College. Jed is a committed, respectful and talented individual, who has shown leadership qualities within the Men’s Football Academy. Jed has been a driving force of the programme through his attitude at training, S&C, matches and “doing the extras” required. Jed also excels in the classroom with an extremely full set of subjects. Jed is on course for high grades in A Level Maths with Statistics and A Level Physics. Jed has just completed his BTEC Sport Science Diploma to D*D* Level without dropping a mark. On top of this Jed has also completed an Extended Project. With these grades Jed is looking to read Sport & Exercise Science at Loughborough University and at one point had Exeter University as one of his options, which I know Mark would have tried to convince him to go to as Mark loved his time there. 25
Nominees Beth Roe Women’s Football
Beth has exceeded expectations this year with confirming her place in the Brighton & Hove Albion Women’s 1st team as well as receiving numerous call ups for England - most recently representing the U19 team in La Manga. All whilst still remaining the ultimate professional both on and off the pitch and ensuring she balances her school work on top to ensure she still achieves the highest grades. Beth has unfortunately recently had a severe injury in which she has had to undertake an operation, however Beth has already stormed through rehab maintaining a professional mentality and is already back on the pitch quicker than anyone imagined!! Beth has been a brilliant role model for all athletes at the college and BHAFC and continues to show tremendous commitment and application to her work. Beth is working hard in her second year of the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport course and will aim to achieve D*D*D*, which would be an outstanding couple of years for Beth at the College.
Iona Gardner Netball
Iona has had an outstanding season by being selected for the Surrey Storm U17 squad and then the AoC National Squad after two days of trials in Nottingham. In addition to this Iona has been playing senior regional netball. She has been instrumental in all the successes of the netball academy this season, not missing a single game. Iona leads by example at training, giving it her all at all times. She is keen to share her knowledge and new ideas from Surrey Storm and the National Squad. Iona is combining this high level of sporting achievement with A Level Maths, Biology and Chemistry, again looking to achieve high grades to top off a positive year.
Teya Ashworth Women’s Rugby
Teya has had an excellent first year at the Women’s Rugby Performance Programme. Teya has fully embraced the ethos of the “academic athlete” by being a main part of the Worthing College National AoC Cup winning squad, joint captain of the South East side, who participated in the AoC National Championships and also made her full England U18s debut this year against Wales. Teya has also been a positive member of the Gifted and Talented programme at the College, gaining access to additional S&C, Nutrition and Injury Management sessions, which have developed her performance further. She has combined this high level of performance with high levels of academic attainment by currently being predicted A in Psychology, A* in Geography and B in History. A fine year for Teya. 26
Sports Person of the Year Olivia Miller Netball
Livi had a great start to the season by being selected in the U19 NPL Surrey Storm squad. Livi then had two days of trials for the AoC National Squad before being selected. She has been a great asset to the netball academy this season, playing one of three positions on the court, all to an equally high standard. Her pivotal moment was scoring the winner with 10 seconds on the clock in the semi final at the regional round of National Schools to beat Wellington. Livi has played U19 regional netball and is currently developing her umpiring skills to enable her to support the junior club. In addition to this Livi is aiming for high grades in A Level Sociology as well as her BTEC Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science.
Fintan Walsh Men’s Football
Fintan has been a highly valued member of the Men’s Football Performance Programme. During both years with us Fintan has represented the ECFA National squad with this season being given the honour of being captain of the National team at both the Caput Mundi Tournament in Rome and winning the Anglo-Welsh Shield. In addition to being England Colleges’ captain Fintan was also awarded the England Colleges’ player of the year for 2017/2018 season. Fintan has also excelled outside of College Football by making over twenty appearances for Whitehawk FC in the Vanarama Conference South League (step 2). With these levels of performance comes representative honours at County level with a full season representing both Sussex Schools and Sussex FA. Fintan was a major part of the Sussex FA squad who won SECYL for the third year in a row. Juggling all of this Fintan still represented the College with pride, by making the ESFA National Semi Finals as well as winning the County Cup for the 1st XI. The above shows how far Fintan has developed on his all round performance. This is linked with his academic studies as Fintan is in line to achieve his grades in Psychology and excel on his Sport and Exercise Science course. 27
Team of the Year Worthing College Academy of Sport squads have again competed and held their position amongst the elite in College sport, with staff and students being credited with their work ethic and continuous development attitude. These squads have had an outstanding season and are, without a doubt, the best sporting College in the County, winning 4 out of 5 County Cups in Netball, Women’s Football, Men’s Football 1st & 2nd XIs. This season has seen the AASE Women’s Rugby squad winning the AoC Elite National Cup Final, which is the fourth time in five seasons to reach the final and its been a great achievement to become national champions. The Women’s Football Academy have won the County Cup for the 11th successive season and they were joined in a “treble” with the Men’s Football Programme winning the title of best side in the county for the third year in a row. The 2nd XI also secured the 28
County Cup title, which is the second time in three years, which fully establishes Worthing College football (men & women) as one of the strongest in the region. After ending Hartpury’s three and a half year unbeaten run in the ESFA National Cup the Men’s Football narrowly lost out in the Semi Finals of this prestigious National competition. The Netball Academy have had an impressive season winning both the Hampshire and Sussex Leagues undefeated in all League matches, winning the Sussex and Regional rounds of National Schools finishing 4th in an exceptionally high standard of competition at the National Finals. They won the AoC regional tournament to then represent the South East at the National Championships where they finished 4th, as well as winning the Sussex Cup beating both Hurstpierpoint College and Brighton College, so this decision for Team of the Year will not be taken lightly.
In addition to this there have been National honours and recognition for individual players, which are celebrated within the Academy. 7 players have represented England Colleges (3 Male, 2 Female Footballers & 2 Netballers), 1 player has represented the Italy U18 and 1 England U18s squad for Rugby, 6 players have attended the England U18s SE Academy and 26 players (10 Men’s Rugby, 11 Men’s Football & 5 Women’s Football) gaining Sussex county honours this term. This shows both team and individual success.
With success across all sports this season will make the decision of Sports Team of the Year an extremely difficult one, but whatever the outcome I’m sure you will agree that this accolade will be fully deserved in what has been again a positive season for the Worthing College Academy of Sport.
These successes and those in previous years show the endeavour, attitude and talent of all Academy of Sport members because as we all know as soon as the players cross the white line it is down to them to perform and do themselves justice, which all have above and beyond expectation at times, which is something all Academy members should take with them into their next stage of sporting development. 29
