step up Level 2 Programme When do I start studying for this qualification? September 2020. For how long will I study? For one year. What is this course about? This exciting and innovative course is designed to offer a unique mix of learning experiences for students who have not yet met the entry requirements for studying advanced level courses in college. What topics will I study? An NCFE Occupational Studies Diploma in Occupational Studies for the Workplace with units of study covering Business, Leisure and Tourism, Health and Care, Science and Sport in the following unit titles:

• Digital photography • Planning and creating a multipage website

• Communication skills for business

• Word processing software • Understanding office • • • • • •

procedures Carrying out office procedures Taking part in sport Personal physical fitness Understanding careers in leisure and tourism Problem solving in the workplace Working in a team

NCFE Optional Units for Individualised Progression Choice. Students will have the opportunity to select from a series of optional units from an NCFE Level 2 Award in Employability Skills qualification to sit alongside a unit, Understanding Mindset for Personal Resilience. Experience of the workplace including employer masterclasses for aspiring entrepreneurs with visits and talks from employers in the local area. English and Maths GCSE retakes for students who have not yet achieved a grade 4 in either or both subjects. Academic skills support sessions covering effective writing, reading, working with numbers and study skills for effective learning. Advanced level learning experience in A Level and Level 3 vocational classes - an opportunity to experience a period of learning in one or more subject area over a half term from February to Easter 2021. How will my work be assessed? Each learner must create a portfolio of evidence generated from appropriate assessment tasks which demonstrates achievement of all the learning outcomes associated with each unit.


Are there any specific entry requirements? You will need a minimum of two GCSEs at Grade 3. What are the lessons like? Lessons include a mix of individual and group work, class discussions and project work to engage and develop a broad variety of learning styles and preferences. What skills and interests do I need beforehand to be a successful applicant for this course? The course is intended to be accessible to a wide range of learners of all abilities. Learners can develop a ‘hands-on’ approach to their learning and gain practical skills, knowledge and understanding in the units of study that are contextualised across the business, travel and tourism, health and care, science and sport vocational areas. What skills will I need to develop during the course to succeed? While completing the course, learners may develop the knowledge, understanding and essential skills employers look for in employees. These range from familiar ‘key skills’ such as team working, independent learning and problem solving, to skills that are less easy to measure such as:

• An appreciation for appropriate behaviour and dress

professional colleagues /peers / management Supporting other aspiring employees Personal manners and deportment Understanding work practices and how different roles and departments function within an organisation.

What have I got to do in order to do well? Make sure you attend each lesson and keep up to date with class and homework tasks. Participate in lessons in order to get the most out of them and act on feedback from your teacher. Is there a similar qualification to this one? If so, how do I choose between them? No. This course is the single option for Level 2 study at the college. Are there any other qualifications that combine particularly well with this course? This course is a combination of elements and as such cannot be combined with any other course. What do people do following ‘Step Up’? Students will be in a position to apply for a range of Further Education A Level / Level 3 Courses, T Levels or Apprenticeships.
