T

his issue is packed with advice, words of encouragement, celebration and honesty. It invites you to take a closer look at simple everyday practices and appreciate the rituals that bring those simple tasks all together. It also touches on how some rituals can even assist you in maintaining peace or achieving relaxation. The goal isn’t about achieving perfection. The goal is to build and follow your own standards. It’s the best way to ensure being present and grateful. And what can be manifested in a mentality of gratitude is powerful. I hope you enjoy. Sincerely,

THE RISE OF THE NOUVEAU VEGAN

Meet Chef Beverly Kumari WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM 9

Chef Beverly Kumar

The Nouveau Vegan

The vegan evolution is undeniable. The lifestyle is finding its way into mainstream dining practically every day. KFC has submitted. Burger King has given in and McDonald’s is scheduled to tap in as well. Chef Beverly Kumari stands as a representation of veganism that predates the social meteoric vegan rise and yet the chef finds herself at the helm of the future of veganism. As the rest of the world’s attention is held captive at the sight of an Impossible Burger, Chef Bev is offering up vegan caviar and a veganized ‘Julia Child’s Boeuf Bourguignon.’ Because, as the world learns of all the ways that food can be enjoyed without sacrifice, it is only a matter of time before our gaze will turn to fine dining if it hasn’t already. Chef Bev is an intricate part of providing a full bodied vegan dining experience that is quietly on the rise. Her academic background is acWORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM 10

tually in journalism and sociology. Yet her vegan roots took seed at the age of 12. She wasn’t able to fully commit to that lifestyle until her trip to India later in life. To know her on Instagram is an indirect encounter with decadence and veganism. Dishes like beet gazpacho, roasted beet tartare and tomato crudo are a feast for your eyes and a tease to your senses and she offers it up in abundance. Having cooked for the likes Hillary Clinton and countless other celebs, Chef Bev’s reach is only rising. And as if her story isn’t already inspiring, to hear of her origins is to witness anecdotal proof that you have the freedom to shift your gears and focus at any time in your life. Chef Bev has unlocked her culinary success and published cookbook, “Nouveau V”, in the span of six years. After leaving the corporate world behind. “I had worked in the corporate world for so long. It just wasn’t me. I was focused on being innovative and creative. I needed

to do something to redevelop my spirit and my soul.” Despite enjoying a great amount of success, Chef Bev doesn’t hold back on her description about the profession. “It’s not Food Network or Bravo. There’s sweat in the kitchen. There’s blood in the kitchen. It’s been pretty tough especially as an African American woman. But it’s what I love. It is very cathartic for me. When I became a specialty chef that role was meant for me.” Her raw description of the profession that she loves matches the tone of the advice that she would offer to anyone interested in switching their careers and pursing their passion. “If it’s really something you want to do, make sure you have a plan. Write down everything. I know some people say “Just Do It.” I don’t. You need to plan.”

NoteWorthy

MEET HOY POLLOY With a name that literally translates to “the masses” Hoy Polloy’s desire to truly reach all kinds of people seems to be the easiest way to describe the group’s core identity. As a group that infuses rock, hip hop and soul, they have fine-tuned the science of making sure every performance is different from the last making it difficult to possibly ever get bored with the group’s sound. In a recent Q&A with Worthy Magazine, The group’s lead singer K SOS discussed the group’s latest upcoming album and the signature sound. I know the group is passionate about a well-rounded performance. How would you describe the standard Hoy Polloy performance? First off, every Hoy Polloy show is different. We have never repeated a setlist in over 200 shows, and if you don’t believe us, each show is logged on our website so that people can go back and see what songs they heard the night they saw us. When we open for a more genre-specific artist we curtail our set to be more in the genre that particular artist performs in, however when we are booked to do shows on our own we do a cross between Rock and Hip Hop with sprinkles of Jazz, Dance, and other musical tones. Before you know it, you may even be lost in a 7-minute cover of Van Morrison’s “Madame George.” What are some of the greatest obstacles that you have had to overcome either personally or professionally?

WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM 12

Personally, is another conversation, although I will say what you go through in your personal life does shape the music you make it so many ways. I have dealt with a lot of loss, personal changes, and heartbreak, and it surely presents itself in the music in different ways. Professionally you have to acknowledge at the end of it all you’re selling a product, sometimes you get to play for 1,000 people, and sometimes it seems like you’re playing to a wall. It is the tough moments where you have to keep your vision clear and persevere to the next gig, and the next opportunity to share what you do. That is why loving what you do is especially important in the arts. There is a lot more let down than moments of success, but if you can internalize the hardships and move through them then the success become much sweeter, and you can share them with the people that helped get you there which is the best part of all. What details can you share about Valkyrie? What can your listeners expect? Do you already have a favorite song from the album why or why not? Valkyrie is our latest hip hop effort due out this fall with awesome collaborations from Jadakiss, AZ, Les Nubians, Scotty ATL, as well as a slew of amazing local talent, some of which we have worked with for years. The awesome thing about making an album is a favorite doesn’t always appear early; sometimes the track that moves you the most comes alive towards the end. There are also a lot of different moods on this album, so once again depending on how your feeling you may want to listen to different songs. It’s an exciting record, one that I hope people will take the time to explore all the way

"I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I AM." Jesse Lynn Madera Jesse’s folk-tinged country melodies in “Come Visit Soon” stand as an impressive addition to a profoundly eloquent musical catalogue. Check out our quick noteworthy exchange with the artist. When and how did you realize that music was your passion? It’s been a thing I’ve realized over and over again. It started when I was a little girl, about 3 years old. I saw my cousins singing together in our living room at a party and something clicked. I was also an MTV baby, part of a musical family, and extra audio absorbent. I see a similar thing happening with my younger son – he creates and repeats melodies all the time! It’s cool to watch. You hear so many opinions about making your passion your area of study. Would you encourage others to major in their passion? How was your experience with that? This is a big question. We’re all unique. The joy I experience making music is in communicating something that’s inside of me, rather than, for instance, playing note-for-note a song someone else wrote. For that reason, and some others, I have never been an enthusiastic formal music student. When trying to explain what I hear in my head to other musicians, the gap in my musical education sometimes creates tension in rehearsal or in the studio. (I remember one bass player who was super chart-reliant, and annoyed that I didn’t create perfect charts.) On the other hand, my lack of formal training has gifted me a fun ignorance to the rules, and that ignorance comes up with some good ideas. It’s worked to have some softness. Life itself is mostly gray area. When we are over-educated in the arts, stuffed full of other people’s ideas, we run the risk of coming up with their ideas, not our own. After the writing stage is complete, I gravitate toward people who are smarter than I am. My friend and sometimes producer Paul Redel is a perfect example of someone who is skilled and knowledgeable, and speaks the technical language, while being simultaneously inventive, tolerating and translating my language (“Can we go more yellow boom here?”). We make a great team. So whether a person hones her craft alone, or with a private instructor, or a mentor, in a field, in a basement, or in a classroom, there’s really no wrong way to eat a Reese’s. Round out your team, and do it your way. Without arrogance, be vigilant about protecting your unique take on this crazy world. That’s the only secret as far as I can tell. No good or bad, just true or false. How would you describe your sound? BEETROOT POWDER The EP I just released is Americana. The one I’m releasing in the fall or winter is more cinematic, dramatic, grandma’s attic. Lots of strings!

I Am Pure Hearted

The Curious Case Of Justina Adorno Newest Cast Member of Roswell Mexico & So Much More

Justina's favorite rituals consist of washing her face, reading for 10 minutes, stretching and oil pulling.

“I am worthy because I am pure hearted,” Justina says confidently after thinking over the fill-in-theblank question asked of all Worthy Magazine features. “Ninety eight percent of the time I’m coming from a pure place with anything that I do.” It’s a trait that she applies to her acting career and even to her diet. It’s been two years since Justina switched over to a vegan diet. “I was very young when I knew that I wanted to be vegan. I was struggling with it before I even knew what it was. My family didn’t know about cooking a meal without animals.” Prior to that the actress dabbled in a pescatarian diet that evolved into a vegetarian diet. “I’m not contributing to animal abuse.” While she speaks of guilt free eating, her concern for empathy is noticeably evident. “Empathy is extremely important in my profession. I have become a better person. It allows you to see their (your character’s) position. Justina’s characters so far have been relatable on "Grand Hotel" her character ‘Yoli’ was a kindhearted spitfire who wasn’t afraid to speak up for herself. "Grand Hotel,” which was executive produced by Eva Longoria was an American adaptation of the internationally popular Spanish series "Gran Hotel" it chronicled the extravagant lives of the Mendoza hotelier family, comprised of the charismatic 'Santiago Mendoza' (Demián Bichir),

his glamorous second wife, 'Gigi' (Roselyn Sánchez), their adult children, and their luxury Miami Beach hotel the Riviera Grand. The series also followed the employees who worked at the five-star hotel, offering a contemporary, fresh take on an upstairs/downstairs story and transforms the concept into a glamorous Latinx-fronted series. The original drama has been described as "a Spanish Downton Abbey.” When it comes to the case of her upcoming character (Steph for CW’s “Roswell Mexico”) in the new year (2020), Justina is a little tight-lipped about the character details. “I’ll just say that she is sassy, a little more confident and a little more of a flirt than I have traditionally played. I am still learning about her.” She is less reserved when discussing her feelings about joining the show. “I watched Roswell with my mom. So I am kind of floating on air.” While manifesting her own dreams, Justina’s call to action for anyone who is thinking about pursuing their dreams is all about understanding. “Get a real understanding of who you are. Because you are going to bring you to it regardless. Be honest with yourself and believe in yourself three times as much as anyone else.” WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM 15

Talks of the universe and creative expression turns spiritual

The Celestine Rae Effect Celestine Rae; actress, dancer and admitted empath.

look at the ocean to get charged up,” Celestine says before a quiet laugh.

What started out as a traditional interview for her latest role in “A Brother’s Honor,” Passionflix's first POC lead romantic film based on Brenda Jackson’s romantic novel, turned into a discussion that went a little deeper than just sharing her favorite rituals for relaxation and balance. So what else is there to know about the Temple University graduate who chose the stage as her communication medium at the age of four? A few fast facts; dance is her first artistic love. She is a Philadelphia native. Her younger sister is her inspiration. Listening to podcasts gets her through her day. And you will be seeing more of her.

What’s in a name? “Celestine is my grandmother’s name. It means heavenly.”

Let’s get spiritual “I am worthy because the universe chose to allow me to exist,” Celestine replied to the traditional ice breaker Worthy Features’ question. “Everyone doesn’t know that I am a spiritual person. I’m really tapped into the universe. My intuition is very strong.” It is that connection paired with her passion for communication that Celestine has tethered to her amplified ability to have empathy for others and assume the perspective of any character that she is playing as well. Rituals and Relaxation She recites her list of rituals for maintaining balance with an ease that doesn’t leave any room to doubt whether she practices it all. “I leave feeling totally cleansed,” she says when speaking of Vinyasa and Bikram yoga. “Meditation has changed the game for me. I love guided meditation (Deepak Chopra).

What about love? In “A Brother’s Honor,” Celestine’s character, “Shana” has to step in to help save a struggling family business that is also dealing with the potential loss of their beloved grandfather. Celestine speaks of her character Shana Bradford with an infatuation that most actresses exude after literally transforming into their character. “I love Shana. She is a quick-witted woman. I love that she is so willing to say what is on her mind.” Discussing her latest role offered the most natural opening to a question that most people find themselves wondering when watching romantic films that feature our favorite actors who are usually married or involved with someone. How do actors balance their romantic roles with their romantic personal lives? “That’s a great question,” Celestine said before quietly giggling. “I think it’s about balance. Like when you finish from set make sure you get back to reality quick and spend time with your significant other. You also need to make sure you have a romantic partner who understands.” On pursuing your dreams “Your existence make you worthy. It takes a lot of work. You can’t put a time limit on it. Find that balance. Stay the course. It’s only a matter of time.”

FIVE TIPS TO MAKE TIME FOR SELF-CARE WHEN YOU FEEL OVERWHELMED IN THE NEW YEAR

Ever feel like the days just get away from you, and you don’t have time to do the things you need to do, much less want to do? Often wish you could just spend your evenings or weekends on your personal goals, practicing self-care or just relaxing? There are many ways you can take control of your time and take better care of yourself. Sometimes it’s a question of prioritizing what you want to do — and outsourcing the rest. Simplify meal prep and cooking. Unless cooking is enjoyable and relaxing for you, chances are you get home from work stressed and hungry — and tired of takeout. Fortunately, there are dozens of options for letting yourself off the hook when it comes to cooking from scratch without sacrificing good, healthy meals. Today many plans exist for ordering pre-packaged ingredients and recipes in a manageable form for you to prepare at home, with minimum fuss. Not only are they delicious, but you can find services that cater to particular health plans or your specific dietary needs. Get help with pet care. Unless you have kids old enough to take care of Fido, or you enjoy taking him for his walks, it’s easy to find pet care services, or even a reliable neighborhood teenager, to help walk the dog or check on the cat, particularly if you work long hours or travel for work. Doggy day care services, boarding and grooming experts also help lift some of the burden of caring for your furry friends. Outsource house cleaning. While we all wish we had beautifully organized, clean homes, it’s almost impossible to do everything we’d like to keep our houses in great shape. Merry Maids offers a variety of cleaning services that allow you to choose which tasks or rooms you most need help with. Merry

Maids home cleaning services are available weekly, every other week, monthly or one-time, so you can pick the service that best suits your lifestyle. On every visit, the team from your local Merry Maids franchise dusts, vacuums, washes and sanitizes each room. Imagine the hours of reclaimed time and peace of mind you’ll have, knowing you’re coming home to a beautifully clean home every night. Prioritize health and exercise. You try your best to exercise, so why not give yourself the most help you can to meet your wellness goals, and a reward when you achieve them? Hiring a personal trainer or signing up for a class that will inspire you to keep up your fitness level is an investment in yourself that will pay dividends in your future, and make you feel great right now. Whether it’s Zumba, spin class, yoga or Pilates, any activity that helps you build strength, flexibility and fitness is worth the cost. Then be sure to treat yourself with an occasional massage, sauna or spa visit — whatever helps you relax and feel good. Take a time-out. When you are able, plan your next vacation for a location that will be fun and relaxing. If a long vacation is not in the cards, plan a mini-break, even just for a weekend, to get away from the daily routine and let you focus on yourself, your significant other or your family. Something as simple as spending a night in a local hotel — with as many amenities as you can enjoy — will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated. You’ve earned it. The next time you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed, choose to outsource those tasks that can take over your life, and give yourself the best gift — the gift of time.

THE DIPLOMAT BEACH RESORT HOLLYWOOD FLORIDA

Just because summer is long gone doesn’t mean the fun has to end. Balance is all about knowing how to relax just as well you know how to work hard. Recently, this teacher and journalist had a chance to experience The Diplomat Beach Resort (3555 Ocean Drive) in Hollywood, Florida. And, I must admit, it was one of the highlights of my summer. From fresh-prepared cocktails at the Hotel Bar, to perfectly prepared sushi rolls at Monkital, breakfast at Point Royal and even a poolside day by a cabana and signature facial at the resort’s Spa, all of these experiences can be your right in time for back-to-school or

even for a quick weekend Staycation. While Worthy Magazine was there, we experienced the hotel bar’s refreshing mojito, a stay at a daytime cabana sipping “frose” and those balcony views from our suite. We also enjoyed breakfast at Point Royal, dinner and amazing steak at Hollywood Prime and a relaxing 50-minute signature facial at the spa. Making this the ultimate all-in-one experience.

vironment, exceptional service and huge rooms full of enough space for you to chill and enjoy the sounds and views of the ocean from your very own balcony. I actually did some back-to-school prep from the balcony and sent some e-mails while enjoying the gorgeous view, so if you are a couple looking for a unique getaway or a teacher needing that last hurrah before summer ends, this hotel has it all.

Conveniently located between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, The Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood Florida is a safe haven of relaxation. Once inside, you’ll be enveloped by a soothing enWORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM 25

Most yoga studios only really offer heated and unheated classes and that is not my testimony. So my goal for 2020 is to have a nice chic at-home practice. The only heat I want to feel will be coming off my lit candles that I hope to include in my at-home studio."

PURE BARRE BOCA RATON STUDIO 350 Esplande Unit 56

If I were to just rattle off the essential tools needed for a standard Pure Barre class, you would make the mistake of doubting how demanding the class actually is. Who would ever think two- to-five pound weights could be scary? Sticky socks are super cute. A small round red rubber ball? For what exactly? And a red resistance tube to conclude this seemingly minimalistic approach to fitness, didn’t strike fear in my heart. But 15

seconds into the warm-up with that red tube humbled me quickly. Pure Barre is a 50-minute full-body workout. Isometric movements can trick an onlooker’s eye into thinking the class may not be super intense but those isometric movements challenge the little forgotten nooks of your body while still sculpting the seat of your dreams. I love the class because it allows me to move at my own pace and when I tap back in, I don’t feel

like I am wasting any time. Pilates, and dance drills collide with core strengthening exercises and even a few yoga stretches. Pure Barre is the perfect union of everything I have tried and been afraid of and somehow packages it all in a way that is easy for me to digest. I leave covered in sweat, shaking a little bit (which is encouraged) and cursing under my breath but I usually feel proud. WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM 29

ENDOMETRIOSIS

AT-HOME TREATMENTS

Four Winds Natural,

Carries Anima Amandi Herbals

"I wanted to share a little about my personal experience with endometriosis and discuss some of my personal remedies that I swear by in providing some comfort in my daily life." - Ju'lia Samuels WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS? THE TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION. HINT: The description does not describe the symptoms so please read the symptoms list as well. In my own words, endometriosis is a common condition in women and is a result of our uterine lining growing outside of uterus, which can create scar tissue or cells (generally in the pelvic area) and lead to the production of ovarian cysts. Most cases that experience a frequent volume of ovarian cysts and the discomfort that comes with them tend to result in a hysterectomy. WHAT SOME SYMPTOMS LOOK LIKE: The presence of scar tissue and cells tend to have painful effects. For some people the discomfort might be confined to pain that starts days before starting a painful and possibly heavy period. For others it might possibly be confined to a painful / heavy and long period. And for another group, it can look like constant discomfort, digestive issues, body aches, pain during intercourse and much more. There is no uniformed endometriosis experience. Being that the location of the rogue scar tissue can really end up anywhere. Scar tissue can exist in the intestines and even as far off as the lungs. And there have been women who experience breathing issues as a result. THERE ARE ONLY TWO WAYS TO ACTUALLY BE DIAGNOSED. Laprascopy, which is a surgical procedure, and by having your doctor testing any WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM 30

cysts or fibroids that may be removed during your surgery to see if the mass tests positive for endometrium. Other common tests that may pop up on Google such as: Ultrasounds, MRI and even pelvic exams honestly can only look for symptoms of endometriosis and depending on your doctor, it could lead to them telling you do not have endometriosis. For example, I had a female doctor of color who did an ultrasound on me for the cyst on my ovary that would eventually have to be removed tell me that because the cyst looked normal I didn’t have endometriosis. What she was looking for was a chocolate cyst which was the only thing an ultrasound could pick up on the cyst that would’ve been related to endometriosis. AN ULTRASOUND CAN NOT SHOW YOU IF YOUR UTERINE LINING IS GROWING OUTSIDE OF UTERUS. NEITHER CAN AN MRI. MY TREATMENTS With diagnosis being difficult, pain treatment can be equally as complicated. Most of my docs and I did see a few had a uniformed approach that left much to be desired. This treatment mostly consisted of birth control and NSAIDS. As in their treatments addressed my heavy periods and did nothing for my constant pain. The most annoying thing was the underestimation of how much pain I was in. Their favorite medication for my pain was Naproxen which is just Ibuprofen. The

discouraging thing about that is that it can eventually effect your stomach lining. And that happened to me being that I was taking so much of it so often just hoping it would work before and after my diagnosis. The same ultrasound doctor suggested pregaming with the meds a few days before my period started to give you context. What has worked for me has been the naturopathic approach. I use a fair of tonics and tinctures to address pain. Ginger is a friend that helps my pain and digestion issues. HELPFUL WAYS TO TREAT PAIN: -Cramp Bark Tincture (Pain relief) -Jamaican Dogwood Tincture (Pain and anxiety relief) -American Health Dual-Action Enzyme Probiotic Complex is what I use -(Prebiotic and Probiotic pill). This helps digestion. -Turmeric is good for preventive inflammation. -Ginger Tea (Pain relief) -Zongle Therapeutic’s Peppermint essential oil (food grade) in water, coconut water, lemon and lime. This soothes my belly pretty quickly while waiting for other remedies to kick in. -Anima Amandi Herbals Euphoria tonic soothes my belly and my mood Most of my remedies I either order on Amazon. Or I purchase them at Sprouts, Vitamin Shoppe or my local gem Four Winds Natural in Boca Raton (101 Plaza Real South Suite H)

Nothing to wear – Having trouble figuring out what to wear in your closet. Try picking out 2 items and paring them together. Build your outfit around those two pieces i.e.; {necklace and shoes} or {blouse and purse}. Jewelry – If you’re wearing a print try paring your jewelry to the least obvious color in the print make a great pop! Keep a lint free micro fiber cloth to wipe off all jewelry especially costume\fashion jewelry after every wear Shake it up – Every once in a while try something totally different: color, pant shape, length. You wouldn’t do normally wear. ShoppingIgnore sizes pick 3 sizes in your range and choose the best fit. Sometimes long skirts look nicer in a size bigger than you would normally wear because the fabric will hang seemlier waists and hems can always easily be adjusted Trends- Try them! Southern Italian and Southern American Cuisine Collide At Coolinary Cafe By: Ju'lia Samuels All it took was a simple dish that consisted of; spinach, mushrooms, fresh herbs and polenta bathing in a garlic broth to convince me of the magic that exists in The Coolinary Cafe’s, (4650 Donald Ross Road Suite 110 Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33418) kitchen. Initially the dish, Pan Roasted Wild Mushrooms $25, was ordered with some reluctance but a sincere interest in how a dish that didn’t have meat at the forefront of a dish might fare compared to other menu items. In truth, I was avoiding meat. I still had my doubts about meatless meals keeping me full. Or maybe I was only thinking of my cooking at the time? One sip of the broth cushioned by polenta and my concerns were destroyed. For me, The Coolinary Cafe lives up to and exceeds the expectations associated with its name. There are still elements that we all know and love or for some people love to hate when indulging in the latest popular dining spot. Framed chalkboard menu descriptions, iron bar stools, stripped bulb lighting paired with minimal but luxe table tops all come together

to meet and challenge the accepted hipster uniform. Minimalism and luxury exist well together in this space. Perched in a dark corner of the restaurant is a simply dressed bar stocked with bottles of liquor that are reminiscent of vintage glamour. Your bird’s eye view into the chef ’s kitchen and the ever-changing daily menu paired with the restaurant’s refined wine list makes it clear that your experience is about to be so much more than what you expect of your local hipster joint. While there might be some trends on the featured menu, the commitment is to unique and flavorful dishes with key ingredients that are provided by seasonal and local produce. It illustrates the established identity of Chef Ted Lipman who’s flavor profile he credits to his grandmother’s unique fusion of Southern Italian and Southern American cuisine. The commitment to fresh and local ingredients cultivates the community dining experience that the chef is interested in providing. WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM 37
