WORTHY READS What was your inspiration behind TRULY DEVIOUS? I wanted to write a proper mystery, with a detective. A mystery in a remote place, with a distinct cast of characters. The book is set at a remote boarding school called Ellingham Academy, which was the setting of what was called the crime of the century in 1936—the kidnapping of the founder’s wife and daughter and the death of a student. In the present day, the main character goes to the school in the hope of solving the case once and for all—and in the process, the events of the past come back in a very dangerous way. I took some pieces of real historical crimes for the backstory, as well as many elements of classic crime novels. This is a mystery, first and foremost! Ever been to South Florida? If so, any favorite

spots? The Keys are genuinely some of my favorite places in the world. I routinely fanaticize about moving to Key West. I may spent my free time looking at websites of houses for sale there. I may have done that today. Any advice for budding writers? Write and read. That’s how it happens. And never give up. - AURORA DOMINGUEZ

REAL P OW E R Editor-in-Chief, Ju’lia Samuels, discusses the backstory behind the theme of our compact issue.

I

avoided doing this piece like the plague. As a work in progress, I can honestly admit that the concept of power and the acceptance of it always makes me nervous. Our responsibilities increase as we accept our power and I am already not very confident about how I handle my responsibilities. My insecurity stems from struggling with balance. How can I find a way to operate in my power without exhausting myself? From that question, anxiety follows. To say that I have mastered “balanced power” would be a lie. I am just recently learning how to take things day-by-day. I am just learning to create for myself and not for the sake of proving myself to anyone. So what is my definition of power? I use to believe that power meant having control in all endeavors. Having worked myself sick pursuing it, I now believe that power is the ability to manifest.

to the standards of others, we step into a substantial amount of power.

B

Yabandoning the significance of the opinions of others, we create room for positive perception. This is my longwinded way of saying manifest your own happiness based on your own standards. You set the standard for you. We can not control everything that happen to us. We can control how we allow it to effect us in the longterm. It’s not easy. But you have that power and you have that right.

T

his compact issue is my humble attempt to embrace “my power.” The magazine has a responsibility to live our mantra: “Because you are worthy.” We are celebrating people who are doing things their own way and effecting people positively. We are in awe of budding chef and philanthropist, Taylor Moxey, who understands that she is powerful and limitless. We couldn’t miss out e have the ability to on the opportunity to celebrate manifest happiness. that. Especially in a young person. We have the ability to be limitless. We have the ability to manifest change and the influence only matters to us personally. When we stop being submissive

Dining with Friends

T

he Modern Rose was the host to Worthy’s first “Dining with Friends” series. Worthy editors and supporters gathered into the welcoming Deerfield Beach cafe ready for a night of conversation and great eats. The evening did not disappoint. Guests dined on vegan desserts, delicious handmade pies and quiche as well as signature cocktails. The evening concluded with Worthy Approved gift boxes being provided along with a blind book date provided by our very own, Aurora Dominguez. Ju’lia Samuels shared the source of her inspiration behind “Dining with Friends.”

I have wanted to curate an experience like "Dining with Friends" for a very long time. I just didn't know if others would be interested. It took a close friend, Lisa, encouraging me to dream big and reassuring me that she would totally be all in if I went forward with it. She reminded me to start within my group of friends and from there I had the privilege of watching "Dining with Friends" grow. The purpose of "Dining with Friends" is pretty simple. I wanted to: Cultivate lifestyle experiences and create unforgettable memories. I wanted to acquaint local residents, companies and brands with Worthy Magazine as well as promote reader interaction and reinforce why our taste in lifestyle related products and experiences is trustworthy.” Ju’lia Samuels

Power, a one of a kind equine assisted learning horse therapy program that focuses on helping veterans, disabled youth, and children develop critical life skills. Equine assisted learning is a remarkable learning approach that promotes the development of essential life skills through groundwork activities using horses as the teacher. This type of therapy has been proven to be more effective than talk therapy, and is especially beneficial for children with Autism.

Taylor’s beliefs are simple. Girls can do anything and your words have power

T

aylor Moxey is a force. She first appeared on our radar as a result of her culinary achievements with baking in particular. In the time that her brand has evolved, we have witnessed a philanthropist, a modern dancer, and a book author emerge proudly proclaiming after conquering each endeavor that girls can do anything. Armed with sincere confidence and two supportive parents (Fabia and Vernon) the sky is the limit for Taylor. "My parents have always taught me that I can be great. An example I always use is Dr. Mae C. Jemison. She is an engineer, physician and NASA astronaut. I think I can do it too. My definition of the word power is being able to influence people both young and old to do great things based on my example," Taylor said. My parents are some of the most giving, caring and supportive people I know. They have total belief in everything our family does. No matter how crazy my ideas may 13

seem, they will say let “Let’s try it”. My parents gave me a forty dollar loan to start my cupcake company. However, it didn't come without a written contract. Yep, my dad wrote it on a napkin and clearly stated that I was to pay them their money back from the money I made first and whatever was left over, I could use to buy the toy I wanted. But seeing how it felt so good to make $175.00 in fifteen minutes I wanted to make more. So I payed them back, but instead of buying that toy I invested in myself. And the rest is History. I have been able to makes lots of money, meet and work with some amazing celebrities like Chrissy Teigen, NBA Star Chris Bosh and make headlines locally, nationally and internationally. $40.00 has allowed me write my first book, open two super fun mobile libraries in the Bahamas and Miami plus touch so many lives and change them for the better through my Taylor Moxey Foundation. Not bad for a life lesson and a small loan."

A collision of decadence and simplicity Tartastic has single handedly taken over the South Florida cafe market as a go-to source for all things delicious and all things pastry related

“I AM WOR T HY BEC AUSE I AM MYSEL F” Daniela Coe has loyal clients in the Cafe Collective, NSU Art Museum, Lady & the Mug, Subculture Coffee in Delray Beach, Brew Urban Cafe and The Modern Rose just to a name a few. She is not slowing down and one small taste of her baked goods makes it abundantly clear as to why that can’t happen.

aniela Coe is the quiet storm that has been brewing up in all of your favorite South Florida cafes. Magical is literally the only phrase that comes to mind when describing the Tartastic experience. Fresh, local and organic ingredients are used to conjure up the perfect dish that somehow manages to have its own unique twist. It should be known that her 20-year-career has taken her to places like: Holland, Jamaica, Bahamas and back to South Florida. Daniela has worked with Michelin Star chefs to develop her culinary style. And with a resume that instantly merits your attention and curiosity, she describes the focus of Tartastic’s flavor profile quite simple.
