YO! SPEAK UP

MICHAEL YO opens up about his personal war against breast cancer and his decision to team up with Glam-A-THON.

The choice for Michael Yo to lend his well-known voice to Glam-A-THON’s worthy cause was a no brainer for the former South Florida Y-100 radio personality. Yo was only nineyears old when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Yo’s mother, Kum Simmons, has beaten breast cancer twice (again in 2005). Yo went on to reveal that his mother also beat out thyroid cancer in 2007. ! “My mom is a warrior,” Yo said. He went on to admit that everything he does is inspired by his family and that he couldn’t say no to Glam-ATHON’s founder Tammy Gail. ! “I love Tammy,” Yo said. “Everything I do is inspired by my family. They keep me on track.” ! The popular personality shared why he also felt that it is important for anyone to give back to their community and lend whatever they can to a worthy cause.

WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM

“What you give back is your legacy. It’s why you wake up. It should be everyone’s goal. You should give whatever you can. If you don’t have money, then give your time.” Yo’s is lending his voice to Glam-ATHON’S cause. And he has the ideal platform to get the word out. The 6’3 TV personality is practically saturating the broadcasting world with his presence. We aren’t complaining. He currently hosts OMG! Insider on CBS, as well as his own show, Yo Show on Yahoo! TV, which garners a loyal following of 1.5 million views per episode and let’s not mention that he also appears regularly on on the comedy panel of E!’s Chelsea Lately, and guest hosts on CBS’ The Talk.

WORTHY LETTER

Alex Hanse

Dear Dreamer, Your spot is never safe. Every single day of your life there is someone who wants to be where you are. As a dreamer and a believer, this may be a common phrase, but you must hear it again: “It Only Gets Tougher At The Top.” Do you really want to be successful? Do you have all that it takes? Do you dream about it night and day? Well, you will have to work, and work hard. No one cares how talented you are and how much you want it, you will have to work.

And when you get to the top it will be the same. It won’t be a moment to kick your shoes off or just relax. You will have to stay fresh, new, and remain innovative. Now that you are not physically hungry, you have to pull your hunger from another source. Never get comfortable. Even the great Steve Jobs was once fired from his own company. What would you do if you walked into your company and they said that YOU were no longer needed? Would you have the drive to keep going or would you fall apart? Never stop working! Never stop fighting! It only gets tougher at the top. But, when you get there you won’t forget this message and you will work even harder than you would have before. “Started from the bottom and now we here,” but do nothing and you will go back to the place from which you came. Keep fighting the good fight! Take care!

Amanda Valdes’

And her beautiful fantasy

A pop surrealism movement We got the chance to interview the woman behind the eerily beautiful pieces of art that we are obsessed with. Amanda Valdes let us into her enchanting world of fantasy and art.

Do you have a favorite piece that you have created? I don't have a single favorite. Some paintings I favor because of the memories that surround them, others stand out because I'm fond of the overall aesthetic, and others because of what they personally represent. All of my creations feel somewhat alive to me, so picking a favorite feels like a parent choosing a favorite child. I'm attached to all of them, each connection is unique and every doll appreciated for her individuality. What do you love the most about your art? The act of creating is a welcomed escape that I crave, I love sifting through ideas and watching a vision come to life, from inspiration to final product. Having people who appreciate, support, or find inspiration in my creations just sweetens the situation and is very gratifying.

“I hope my artwork evokes thought and stirs the viewer's imagination so they can establish a individual connection to my pieces.”

Where do you get inspiration from? Anything and everything from day to day findings or experiences, music, books (ex. Brother's Grimm fairytales), movies (ex. Tim Burton flicks), editorial fashion spreads, history, rainy days, social events and pop culture. Who are your favorite artists and why? I have a pretty long list and it’s constantly changing...As far as the classics, I love Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, Van Gogh, and Picasso because I grew up visiting their pieces at museums and spent time in school learning about the personalities behind the work. I really adore Tim Burton's drawings and street artist like Fafi and Miss Van. I'm typically drawn to unusual styles, textures, or use of color and detail. There's a long list of artists I follow on the social media sites, from tattoo geniuses and well established artists to up and comers. Some of my favorites right now include Zan von Zed, Audrey Kawasaki, and Francoise Nielly.

What is the process like to make one of your pieces? Do you use acrylic, markers? How long would you say it takes you to create one of your pieces? Everything starts with a sketch and the process is pretty organic. Ideas don't always play out on paper as I've pictured them, sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised, other times ideas get scratched. Sketch sessions allow me to play with the concept and can potentially open the flood gates for more inspiration (that's usually how a collection is born and also why it can be tough to organize and partition some series). I typically work with acrylic paint, although I've been experimenting with watercolor and colored pencil more often recently. Depending on the size and amount of detail in a piece, a painting or drawing can take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks to complete. Typically it's closer to a 5-6 days at this point, but I think it's important to work at a pace that's comfortable and is best when I'm fueled with excitement about the project.

“I am worthy because I'm a creator and strive to turn my inner vision to a outer reality, hoping to inspire others while lighting my own way.” -Amanda Valdes

FALL STYLE

A LOOK INTO AFFORDABLE STYLISH LOOKS THAT ARE ON TREND FOR THE FALL SEASON. CHECK OUT THESE TRUST-WORTHY PURCHASES BY KRISTINE NAVAS

With Fall rolling in and Spring Fashion Week trends hitting the streets, we were to sure to keep note of what trends were a must have this season. As avid runway followers we love to take designer looks and turn them into every day outfit choice. As much as we would love to walk around in an Oscar De La Renta gown every day, it’s not realistic. So here are our top picks of must have trends straight from the runway. Michael Kors was sure to make a statement when he rolled out his fall line in the spring. All about geometric cutouts, bold cuts, and pops of color. One our favorite looks was Kors’ play on subtle, but bold cutouts. This trend was featured on a long, black maxi dress during his runway debut with geometric cutouts on the neckline. But the question is how do we get this look everyday? Easy with Closet Deep’s Jessica Cut Out Dress which features geometric cutouts on both sides to add a touch sexiness but still lays within Fall’s darker palette. Another trend that we fell in love with that Kors’ did effortlessly was the pop of royal blue with black. It was featured on the runway through structured, oversized coats, but the best way to get this look for everyday is with our Vanessa Mesh Dress. With subtle black mesh neckline and we royal blue dress line is the perfect example of this color combination. Though we could go on and on about our favorite looks, we’ll only share our favorite. We love to share our go-to outfits and it was featured again this past Fashion Week. Simple stated by Narciso Rodriguez, just throw on a black blazer and black trousers. Since trousers aren’t always budget friendly we recommend pairing our Kristen Tuxedo Blazer with black faux leather leggings or jeans.

CLOSET DEEP PIECES

You can get these Fall runway trends easily on a budget from Closet Deep and rock them as if they cost a million. Cozy up with us.

Mellow Yellow Spotted. Some of the trendiest women we know. We couldn’t get enough of their style and how they styled this latest trend yellow

“I draw my style, honestly, from everyone. I was born and raised in New York City. New York city is huge and has so much style and versatility that it’s inspiring. NYC has inspired me a lot, when you walk down the streets of New York City you see so many different people from all over and it inspires me on a daily. I honestly don’t really have a specific person I try to imitate But I can say Rihanna is one of my fashion muses. She’s so creative and versatile like myself. She doesn’t care what others may think and bases her outfits on her mood as well.” - Anais Aybar

Mellow Yellow

“My style is definitely more classic and feminine. I started blogging as a bit of a hobby six months ago when I was living overseas and wanted to create a place where I could show my family and friends what I was up to. -Charlotte Bridgeman winstonandwillow.com

Mellow Yellow

Animal prints are my favorite neutral, and this Phillip Lim for Target dress is perfect for day to night, adding little hints of color with the blues in the print. I started blogging as a way to have something to look forward too. A terrible tragedy happened that year, and I was in the slums. Blogging helped me feel better, and ultimately got me back to normal again. It's one of my favorite emotional & creative outlets. - Kirstin of kirstinmarie.com

What was your ‘Aha’ moment to launch your business? A 4-year-old girl with brain cancer wished to go to Disney World to meet Sleeping Beauty for her wish. A week before her trip, her cancer took a turn and the doctors sent her home saying she could have her last few weeks with her family. A couple days later, I showed up on her doorstep dressed as Sleeping Beauty. I brought her a princess dress and crown and read her the story of Sleeping Beauty. A week later, she passed away. Her mother called me saying she was at peace with her daughter’s passing because she knew she got everything she ever wanted: to meet Sleeping Beauty. At this point, I knew I wanted to take action of my own to help these girls. They’re already risking losing their life, their hair-loss should be the last thing they have to worry about. How many headbands & dollars have you donated?

Ju’lia Samuels

Why did you launch Head bands of Hope? “DURING THE SUMMER OF 2011, I DID AN INTERNSHIP WITH THE MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION. I FOUND THAT GIRLS LOVED TO WEAR HEADBANDS INSTEAD OF WIGS AFTER LOSING THEIR HAIR TO TREATMENT. THE GIRLS AT MAKE-A-WISH TOUCHED MY HEART SO MUCH AND IWANTED TO DEVELOP A WAY WHERE EVERY GIRL BATTLING CANCER COULD HAVE A HEADBAND.”

7,000 headbands and $7,000 to research. What has been the most touching moment when gifting headbands at hospitals? Every time I walk into a hospital room, my whole life shifts around and nothing else matters except for that moment. One time, I gave a girl a headband and she said she wanted to give me a headband too but asked if it was okay that my headband was on a piece of paper. On another hospital visit, I met a 15-year-old girl and spent the day with her. Her mom called me a week later saying that she had

“7,000 headbands and $7,000 to research.” passed away. Her mom said she was calling me because she wanted headbands for all of the women to wear to her funeral the next day because she loved her headband so much during her last week of life.

a partnership, which I really appreciated.

It’s moments like these that

I think I became an entrepreneur because of a charity that grabbed me, not because I wanted to be an entrepreneur. There are so many negative stereotypes to my young 20s generation. I love being able to stand against those stereotypes and serve as proof that you’re never too young to start something you believe in.

can make a girl feel normal and comfortable in her own skin with just a headband, then I’m going to do everything I can to make give a headband to every girl battling cancer. How do you select which hospitals to work with? We contact hospitals around the nation and we also take requests from hospitals for headbands. We also work with St. Baldrick’s to donate to hospitals they work with. We’ve never turned down a donation and we never plan to! How did the partnership with St Baldrick’s happen? St. Baldrick’s is a perfect match for Headbands of Hope. The head shavings they do add light and a sense of fun to fundraising for cancer. Headbands of Hope aims to do the same; bring light and progress to a cause that deserves it. St. Baldrick’s believed in what I was creating from the very beginning. They didn’t need to see numbers or success to join hands in

As a young entrepreneur, it did you choose to add a charity component as well?

What is your advice for other young entrepreneurs that want to start a business with a cause? Every great accomplishment starts with the decision to go for it. I’m a speaker at CAMPUSPEAK, and one of the main points I like to share with college students is making the decision to take risks. It can be really scary, but if we didn’t take risks, there would be no exploration, small businesses or other factors that drive innovation. Also, there will always be an excuse that it’s not a “good time.” There’s no such thing as the perfect time! I started Headbands of Hope when I was taking an 18-hour course load. If you believe in something enough, time isn’t an issue.

What dictates the aesthetic of the headband – seasonal trends or needs of the young girls? The headbands we donate to young girls are always the classic shabby headbands. The wide bands sit comfortably on volume since they usually don’t have hair. The collections we have to sell are dictated by seasonal trends. For example, chevron was really popular this spring so we started adding that pattern to our designs. Now we’re seeing a lot of desires for bows so we added We’re always looking for fresh styles for our hope shoppers! What is next for Headbands of Hope? Ideally, in 10 years, Headbands of Hope won’t be around. I think I’m one of the few people that can say I hope I’m out of a job because I hope there’s a cure for cancer. But in the meantime, we just e panded into a boys line called Headwear of Hope. When I go to the hospitals, it’s amazing to give the headbands to girls but I see the boys there and I realized they deserve something as well. So our brother company was born…

MODEL BEHAVIOR Favorite place to shop? What kind of shopper are you? Joanna: Our favorite place to shop is H&M. As college students, the prices are unbeatable! We also really like Express, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21 and Bebe. Like most women, we enjoy quality but we are also cost-conscious because we grew up in a household budget of a single mom on

“We are worthy because no matter what we are in this together” -joanna and kelly McNamara Who is your “role model?” Why?

a teacher’s salary. We had to work for whatever extra expenses we wanted. What is your favorite trend for the upcoming fashion season and why is it your favorite? Kelly: We’re really enjoying the crop top trend with high-waisted pants, shorts, skirts and/or jeans. We think this look accentuates a woman’s hips in a flattering yet modest way, particularly for our figure.

Kelly: I think for the most part people tend to look up to those they can relate to. So for us, in our professional modeling career, we look up to other twin models. The other day I was looking through the 2013 September issue of Allure magazine and saw a pair of twins models-- I find that inspiring! It would be great to achieve that level of success together. Joanna: In regards to our personal life, I would definitely have to say our role model would be our aunt. She has always been there for us. One of her life lessons she has taught us that we will never forget is to always to choose to be kind rather than to be right. Meaning, what is more important? The friendship and or relationship you have with someone, or fulfilling one's need to be right?

OUTSPOKEN !

Many of us have our own

definition on what it means to be OUTSPOKEN. But most of us are afraid of that very same term. Brilliant scholars have tried to define it, putting it out there for all to understand, but at the end of the day we all live by our own definition. !

Misunderstandings, getting

offended, causing conflicts, or whatever the case maybe. Behaving or saying how you feel when you feel like it. Outspoken. !

Love, hate, political beliefs,

anger, poetry. Outspoken. The fashion season’s “must have”, that no one else has. Outspoken. The funniest, comedian in the world picking on the woman with the messed up weave who decided to sit in the front row. Outspoken. The dancer who left his heart on stage to a choreographed piece to one of the Billboard’s Top

JACKIE CHRISTIE

In the age of technology, being outspoken has been redefined to an extent that I bet 1st century scholars would eat up. Such sites as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Myspace, Instagram, to name a few, have revolutionized being outspoken. Reflecting on all the unapologetic creative forms of outspoken artistic expression uploaded on all the social networks daily. How do you keep up? Being outspoken is a way of life to some. For the artistic minds of the world, it has been around since the beginning of time. With the unique styling’s of these revolutionary artistic individuals who some love to hate and others love to follow, we find that they are the ones unafraid of setting the world on fire by being outspoken.

OUTSPOKEN

Ashanti Davis “~Sometimes, I feel like Common when he rapped, "I used to love her, uh-uh-uh". Me and my love affair with writing, just like my relationship with hip-hop, somehow just went south and, honestly, I don't know if it will ever be the same again. I used to be excited to crack open a fresh notebook. To me, a fresh notebook was the equivalent of sliding on a new pair of socks. Back then, it was the equivalent of wearing a fresh pair of Jays on Saturday to the mall. I'm searching for those days again- somewhere in all the craziness of my life, writing stopped being that life vest. The pressure of demand and commitment made my catharsis seem like a chore, and once I realized I didn't have to do it- well, let's just say we parted on not so friendly terms. As I observe the world in 2013, sometimes, I can see how me and writing fell out. Not using this as a clutch- but the pretense in our society has the tendency to be overwhelming. I was annoyed...and I'm still annoyed by the lack of creativity and the brainwashed individuals who support it. Although I can't blame the world for my estranged relationship, I hate writing right now because I don't know what to say. At times, i want to make it work, but the entire process seems burdensome. I can't lie, I do miss her though. I'm fighting to add my voice back to the pad. Writing used to help fix the brokenness inside of me. She was the only one who could sort my feelings and my vision, but I haven't been happy here in a long time. Maybe my expectations were just too high. Reading my old material someone, recently, asked me why I love the outspoken art form- I had think back to the way it used to be...I used to love her because of her purity and intent; her vision was to save the people. I used to love her because she hated self destruction, and embraced my community. I used to love her because she was confident in her own skin- her beauty wasn't reckless. I still love her, I just don't know who she is anymore- and, quite frankly, neither does she.~” ~Ashanti Davis Songwriter,Poet
