MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE WSO BOARD
Photographer: Leif Norman
We are now moving into the final stages of the WSO’s 2016-2017 season. What a season it has been, kicking off with the star power of Joshua Bell last September and continuing thorough many, many outstanding concerts with guest performers, guest conductors and, above all, our own orchestra. But, it is far from over. There are many more great shows to look forward to this spring. In a special collaboration with Rainbow Stage, we will be performing the music of the amazing Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, South Pacific. We will also have a return appearance by the brilliant Tianwa Yang playing the Brahms Violin Concerto in D major, as well as a new collaboration with upcoming stars from our Francophone community.Top that off with a concert featuring the Juno-nominated Winnipeg indie-band Royal Canoe and we have a couple of months not to be missed! Spring is also the time of year when the WSO counts most on its community for charitable support. As you renew your subscriptions, please consider making a charitable donation to the WSO. As most of you know, ticket sales revenues cover only 42% of the costs of maintaining this wonderful orchestra in our community. With public sector grants frozen for so many years, we count more and more on your generosity to make it possible to sustain the work and programs of the orchestra. We thank you for your help in supporting our orchestra. Each year presents particular challenges for the WSO.This year, we have been very thankful for the outstanding support provided by a group of donors that has made it possible for the WSO to perform with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet this year. Special thanks to Susan Glass and Arni Thorsteinson, Richardson Foundation, Frank and Jeanne Plett, Dr. Robert and Mrs. Angela Ross, Dave Johntson and the Johntson Group, The Winnipeg Foundation, Tannis Richardson, and Kathleen Richardson. In closing, I want to recognize the service of the following retiring orchestra members, Brian Sykora, trumpet; Merrily Peters, viola; and Martha Durkin, flute/piccolo, and Principal Librarian Ray Chrunyk. I also urge you not to forget our Summer Season with our 70th Anniversary Community Celebration, and concerts in Assiniboine Park, at The Forks, and in Kenora. Keep an eye out for these shows.

CONDUCTORS AND COMPOSERS Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly),“fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011). Following on from his tenure as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his tenth season as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual Winnipeg New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano’s boundless musical appetite makes him a formidable interpreter of the symphonic repertoire as well as a versatile conductor in a wide range of genres. He is currently the Resident Conductor of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Artist in Residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music festival, and Music Director of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. From 2009 to 2013, he served as Music Director of the Longy School of Music Conservatory Orchestra where he established a rigorous and distinctive new orchestral program. Pellicano has conducted the Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre (Brazil), Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony,The Kallisti Ensemble, Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble and Milwaukee's Present Music. He has worked in masterclasses with Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Zsolt Nagy, Martyn Brabbins, and Carl St. Clair. An autodidact, he was accepted to the Peabody Conservatory as a percussionist without typical classical training. He also holds degrees from the Royal College of Music (Stockholm), and the Yale School of Music where he was awarded the 2008 Presser Music Award and the Philip F. Nelson Award. Harry Stafylakis, Composer-in-Residence, WNMF Festival Director Harry Stafylakis (b. 1982, Montreal) is a Canadian–American composer based in NYC. He is the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra's Composer-In-Residence and Festival Director of the WSO's Winnipeg New Music Festival. A modest job at
Columbia University ended after a few months. He lamented that his music was receiving no performances at all and by the end of 1942, his advancing leukemia required hospital treatment, for which the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers helped out financially so he could continue to compose. When Bartók’s old friends, violinist Joseph Szigeti and conductor Fritz Reiner, found out about their fellow countryman’s sad state, they suggested to the famous conductor Serge Koussevitzky that his foundation commission an orchestral piece in memory of his wife, Natalie. As a pioneer in presenting new works, Koussevitzky agreed and offered Bartók one thousand dollars. Bartók accepted half, fearing he might not be able to complete the work. What followed for the composer was an Autumn-summer of creation. Bartók threw himself into the project with newly fortified strength. The premiere was an instant success and Concerto for Orchestra was immediately taken on by many orchestras, its place in the literature guaranteed along with a landslide of new interest in its composer. Sadly, Bartók died less than a year later. Concerto for Orchestra is the ultimate 20th-century showpiece for orchestra that puts all its resources on high alert within a compelling musical narrative. The interval of a fourth pervades the opening movement, of his famous “night music”type. The second movement, called Game of Pairs, pits paired instruments against each other in jest, with a chorale-like Trio at the centre. The third movement Elegy uses three themes derived from the opening movement. The fourth movement features shifting time signatures around the everambiguous tri-tone in the scale, with a fizzing parody of the march from Shostakovich’s “Leningrad” Symphony No. 7 in the middle. All stops are pulled out for the exciting finale, a whirling perpetual motion of fireworks and folk spirit.

Rayannah uses loop pedals to layer her voice, breath, synths, and percussion. Sparse and delicate webs build into dense walls of sound and grooves with driving backbeats. his arsenal of Weissenborns, lap slide guitars and hardedge songwriting, as Nadia shines through with enchanting vocal harmonies and insightfully honest lyrics – it is hard to deny the magic they create as they command the stage with their palpable performances. In 2015, they journeyed into the world of children’s music, the time to create a magical all-original lullaby album that married languages and bridged cultures, and for which they recently won a Western Canadian Music Award. Now coming back to their folk-roots, they are set to deliver some of their newest music in 2017 with upcoming projects promising to deliver refreshing and compelling folk music collaborations.
Kelly Bado Kelly Bado is a bilingual singersongwriter-interpreter who takes you on a beautiful journey with her songs. Born in Ivory Coast, Kelly discovered her artistic and musical potential at a young age. Her talent became evident when she joined her high school and church choirs. After moving to Canada in December 2007, she became part of the Winnipeg community as an active member in various bands and one of the lead singers at Springs Church Canada. Her style of music varies between R&B/Soul, Pop, Folk and World. Her lyrics are inspired by love, hope and social equity. Her voice and her passion transport the audience in a friendly and rhythmic atmosphere.
Ariane Jean Born into a musical family, a young Ariane Jean honed her chops singing along to her parents’ record collection and harmonizing with the haunting melodies of her household’s kitchen appliances. Coached by some of the greats via vinyl and tape, Ariane developed her instrument; a sweet, honeyed voice that could swing smoothly from note to note, high to low and between genres with ease and precision. Armed with an innate understanding of rhythm, melody and harmony, Ariane stepped into the spotlight for the first time in 1995. Since then, she has made a career of music, as a vocalist and music maker, captivating audiences all across the Americas and Europe, with her unique brand of humour, natural ease on stage and silky vocal
prowess. Whether part of a group such as Chic Gamine or Madrigaïa or accompanying such artists as J-P Hoe, Imaginary Cities, Royal Canoe, Daniel Lavoie or Daniel ROA, Ariane’s soulful voice makes itself at home, much to the delight of all concerned.
Faouzia Born in Morocco and raised in the rural town of Carman, Manitoba, Faouzia is a talent to be reckoned with. Combining catchy pop rhythms, heartfelt lyrics, and powerhouse vocals, this young sensation could make Adele blush. Winner of the Grand Prize at Le Chicane Électrique 2015 for her original song Mes Cicatrices, Faouzia switches seamlessly between composing songs in French and English, following her well-tuned instinct. It’s a good thing she does – her hit, Knock On My Door, is already in regular rotation on Canadian radio. Influenced by hours spent listening to traditional Arabic music in her parents’ minivan, the songbird’s voice embodies a unique range, taking on subtle trills and stylings that combine effortlessly with contemporary pop hooks or Francophone lyrics. With a record in the works and more performances booking up daily, Faouzia’s star just keeps shining brighter. You won’t be able to miss this up-andcoming artistic force.
Daniel ROA With his first album, Le nombril du monde (2009), Daniel ROA took us on a foray into his spirited musical universe, seasoned with lyrics stamped with intelligence, humour, and candor. The album was rewarded with a Western Canadian Music Award – Album Francophone in 2009, as well as a Trille Or Award – Artiste de l’Ouest canadien par excellence in 2011. With exceptional musicians by his side, he has toured extensively across Canada, in Switzerland, and in France, meanwhile making time to write scores for theatre and engaging in studio recordings as a free-lance musician. In this search for lightness, Daniel ROA invites us to join him. He is well on his way, but the journey is far from over. His second album HYPERBOLE promises to take us further and farther, in profound and beautiful ways.

Production titles include Beethoven Lives Upstairs, Mozart’s Magnificent Voyage,Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery, Tchaikovsky Discovers America and the brand new, Gershwin’s Magic Key - the first-ever symphony concert production that introduces new generations to the extraordinary legacy of the great American composer, George Gershwin.

Susan holds the philosophy that,“Where the heart goes, the mind will follow.” An accomplished concert pianist and music teacher, Hammond searched for recordings about classical music to share with her young daughters. One day, she sat reading to her girls with a classical music radio station on in the background and noticed how they responded to the literature in a different way when enhanced by music. The rest, as they say, is history. Shaunna Chief-Parker is a blind violin student in Sistema Winnipeg.
Shaunna Chief-Parker is a Grade 5 student at Elwick School, and is part of a WSO after-school music program called Sistema Winnipeg. She is in her third year of learning to play violin. Shaunna’s journey in Sistema is especially inspiring because Shaunna has been blind since birth. Shaunna joined Sistema Winnipeg because she loves music. Her enthusiasm is infectious.“I like everything [in Sistema]. We work, but it’s mostly fun. Playing music makes me feel relaxed, calm and excited.”
Shaunna is taught by Sistema Winnipeg instructor Gisaya Gahungu, who enjoys working with a visually-impaired student. He recalls how creating a system of writing music in braille was a “real boost to Shaunna’s motivation.” Gisaya also praises Shaunna’s family for the strong commitment they have made to the program and believes that Sistema is one of the reasons why the family has chosen to keep Shaunna enrolled at Elwick School.
