Opening the 75th anniversary season is the incredibly talented James Ehnes. The multiple awardwinning violinist makes his highly anticipated return to the WSO, performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. This work represents a supreme challenge for violinists. Far from being a virtuoso display piece, Beethoven composed this work like a chamber piece on a large scale, giving the soloist no place to hide. This concerto is celebrated as one of the greatest and most popular for solo violin.
Daniel Raiskin, conductor James Ehnes, violin Valentin Silvestrov: Prayer for Ukraine Ludwig van Beethoven: Concerto in D major for Violin & Orchestra, Op. 61 Gustav Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor
The performance of Gustav Mahler’s epic Fifth Symphony will feature almost 80 musicians on stage. Mahler’s music isn’t just notes, it’s an all-encompassing world that inspires us to search for deeper meaning and inner truths. While the Adagietto is the most famous movement of his Symphony No. 5, there is so much more Mahler wanted us to hear and feel.

Original members Brad Roberts, Ellen Reid, Dan Roberts and Mitch Dorge join the WSO for two nights of your favourite Crash Test Dummies songs with a symphonic twist.
“Our last WSO show got the band back together and touring again,” says lead singer/songwriter Brad Roberts. “We’ve just got back from Europe and America and are coming full circle. This is a really nice way to end our year.”
It’s hard to believe, but it’s been more than 30 years since the Crash Test Dummies recorded their debut album, The Ghosts That Haunt Me (1991), which earned them their first big hit, “Superman’s Song,” and the JUNO Award for Group of the Year (1992). They would go on to enjoy international fame with their sophomore album, God Shuffled His Feet (1993) and the lead single “Mmm Mmm Mmm.” The album also garnered three Grammy Award nominations (1995) for Best New Artist, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group (“Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm”) and Best Alternative Music Performance (“God Shuffled His Feet”).

Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93 WSO Music Director Daniel Raiskin is gifted at uncovering the secrets of Shostakovich, and this performance of Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony is an opportunity to tell all. Shostakovich utilized his “secret code” musical monogram in this work more than almost any other, a poignant expression of self during a regime that sought to erase the personal identity of artists in favour of brute nationalistic pride.

It all starts with the epic Overture to Taras Bulba, from the opera based on one of the most famous Ukrainian literary characters of all time.
Manuel de Falla is among the greatest Spanish composers of the 20th century. He loved the music of Frédéric Chopin and wanted to make a stage work around his themes, but sadly never finished it. Rarely heard, Fuego fatuo is Falla’s surviving orchestral Suite – a fascinating perspective on the richness of Chopin that goes far beyond a mere medley of those famous themes.

Hector Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14 Berlioz composed Symphonie fantastique in an attempt to woo a young actress, but it’s not your average love song (or story). This symphony begins with passionate, heartsick daydreams, a grand ball, and scenes in the countryside – only to take a sharp turn with a march to the guillotine and a witch’s Sabbath, thanks to a heavy dose of opium. Storyline aside, the orchestration of this work was so innovative it truly startled 19th-century audiences, convincing them the world of the supernatural was present at the performance.

Adapted from the 2003 Governor General’s Award-nominated book The Maestro, this concertstory is about a little girl who loves to sing, but moves to a town where music is forbidden! This town is named Hamelin – 30 years after the infamous Pied Piper led all of Hamelin’s children away. Hannah breaks the musical silence with the help of a gossipy rat and her own passion for grand music. Eventually, she melts the heart of a desperate conductor and frees his imprisoned orchestra. Music is restored to Hamelin, and the orchestra regains its central part in the town’s new Fuelledlife.by the music of Verdi, Mendelssohn, Liszt and Villa-Lobos, as well as original compositions by Canadians Dave Pierce and Donovan Seidle, The Mysterious Maestro races through dark nights and hidden caverns, and explores the nature of musical perfection… and obsession. This is a bewitching concert featuring great music and top-notch performances. Enjoy this fun-filled afternoon of music perfect for the entire family, and be sure to come early to take part in pre-concert activities, including an instrument petting zoo, conducting station and Puppetsmore!and the Maestro’s carved hands by The Old Trout Puppet Workshop.

It was his German Requiem that first won international success for Brahms. Composed in tribute to his late mother, the music follows a journey from earthly suffering through faith, consolation, and ultimately joy. Brahms’ Requiem is a stunning example of the composer’s ability to affirm the beauty of life through music. We are delighted to welcome back the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir as they celebrate their 100th anniversary!

Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony has entered the minds and souls of music lovers to such a degree that each performance becomes an event before the first note is played. This fusion of majestic music, poetry and insight of what brings humanity together, capped off by the sublime choral finale with its unforgettable Ode to Joy, is among music’s most transcendent experiences and a much-needed symbol for freedom today.
Acclaimed Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki is our featured guest soloist in Chopin’s evergreen, romantic Concerto.

The WSO Goes Back to School
With help from our donors, the WSO will continue to inspire and engage young people, connect communities, and foster creativity and imagination. A gift to the WSO will secure the future of our educational programming for students across Manitoba and help young people achieve their fullest potential.
Over the last two years, we have missed live interaction with the young people participating in our educational programming. Through some adaptation and innovative virtual learning, our connection to schools and communities was maintained, but the ability to learn together is an essential experience that provides greater engagement. This fall, we are thrilled to be able to visit schools again and welcome students back to WSO performances through initiatives like Bach to School, Nursery Notes, Musical Discoveries and Adventures in Music.
This June, after two years of hybrid learning, Sistema Winnipeg held its Michael Nozick Spring Concert for a full audience at the Seven Oaks Performing Arts Centre. A chance to celebrate the young musicians of Sistema and showcase the results of hours of hard work and practice was truly inspiring for their families, friends and teachers. It was a wonderful reminder that there is no substitute for live performance and in-person learning.
