analysis alleviate the split nijmegen (NL) W.P. Hariyono 4411560 AR1U090 - E. Brandes

Summary The city, seen as multilayered system, showcases the fragmentation within the same land use. Urban form and morphology analysis also tells us that Nijmegen city center has very important role in the entire city. It has a very high concentration level. To be more strategic and tactical, it is very important to see how the old city center and the river relate in forming the city entrance and receptive to phenomenon on the other side of the city.

contextual plan alleviate the split nijmegen (NL) W.P. Hariyono 4411560 AR1U090 - E. Brandes

As one of the top 10 most populated cities in The Netherlands, Nijmegen turns into a very important node in the east of the country. Even though it is located relatively far from Randstad, Nijmegen is popular for its history and research education (Radboud University).

The main points from urban morphology analysis is that Nijmegen city center has very important role in forming the entire city. It has a very high concentration level. Despite developed nodes at Radbound University and Dukenburg, the old city center is still the most essential part that accomodates commercial, recrational, and historical needs.

N326 road can be said as city main axes, due to its strong commercial function connector from old city center, new developed Dukenburg, and ultimately to access the other city in North and West. Green structure constructs patches within urban area. It also surrounds the city with agricultural and woods. This is where the elevation (hilly landscape) gives a special characteristic to NIijmegen.

Classification of urban block is done after 3-days excursion of discovery. I came up with six typologies of urban block that were determined by plan and connection to the road. “segmented” typology is mostly found in the old city center. It usually executes a unique and individual architecture, mixed between old and new. The urban block “street grid” tends to follow the road line structure and leave a shared unbuilt space behind. Post-second-world-war collective housing are dominated by “cauliflower” and “linear” typology, mostly are in the city periferi. Meanwhile, “village” structure specifically indicates suburb and city elevation significance. “big blocks” are found in the industrial, educational, and social area.

reductive view alleviate the split nijmegen (NL) W.P. Hariyono 4411560 AR1U090 - E. Brandes

The reductive bird-eye view generates the strategic and tactical thinking of how the old city center and the river relate in forming the city entrance. Even more, how they become receptive and open to unforeseen phenomenon on the other side of the city.

10

city center alleviate the split nijmegen (NL) W.P. Hariyono 4411560 AR1U090 - E. Brandes

Summary Like the other cities in The Netherlands, city center offers a representative identity to the urban areas. It reacts both modernism and history that remains. From the reductive public function plan, it is seen that Nijmegen city center undergo a wide programmatic and physical change. the deviations are seen through building colors, sections, and elevation.

diagnosis alleviate the split nijmegen (NL) W.P. Hariyono 4411560 AR1U090 - E. Brandes

Summary There was no way to be seen that the growth went to north part after 2005. People tend to live almost 8 kilometers away from the center rather than move to Lent. This indicates the effect of river existence. Demographic study diagnoses that the river embodies a physical, social, and economical gap in the city. It plays as an absolute barrier and splits the city in rough way. Ironically, the concentration of old city center does not expanse to the waterfront. The river has built a speculative ‘backside’ of the city. City center’s flow stops in certain moment where the commercial functions have ended too.

17

history alleviate the split nijmegen (NL) W.P. Hariyono 4411560 AR1U090 - E. Brandes

It turned out that the river was where the city formed at the beginning. The strategic value gave an economy activity center along the Waal. After It was heavily bombed by American plane, and created a big damage in 1944, Nijmegen started to grow and post-war housing was a big product that time. Along the way it grew, many housing and funtions were built more south and south, be far from old city center. There was no way to be seen that the growth went to north part after 2005. People tend to live almost 8 kilometers away from the center rather than move to Lent. This indicates the effect of river existence.

density alleviate the split nijmegen (NL) W.P. Hariyono 4411560 AR1U090 - E. Brandes

In order to understand how the river plays a role in the city, I call out four cities in The Netherlands which its municipality is crossed by the river.

nijmegen

rotterdam

820-11500 per sq km

1060-12800 per sq km

In Rotterdam and Maastricht, as seen in the population density diagram, the low and the high density number are spread evenly. In Rotterdam, the highest density at Delshaven district (over 12500 people per square km) is followed by Feijenoord which located in the other side of the river. This phenomenon can also be seen in maastricht in where the river does not create an imbalance line. Meanwhile Nijmegen and Amsterdam show complete opposite condition. Both show that the river divides the city into to 2 part with a drastic distinction in population. This is seen by population density in Nijmegen city center which is more than 14 times higher than the district across the river.

This overage unoccupied building causes a high rent cost difference in Nijmegen city center and Lent. In centrum, people have to pay averagely 12.7 Euro per square meter per month for a house unit. Drastically, it is only half price in the other side of the river. This obviously demonstrates an economical discrepancy.

Despite the well maintained landscape, old city center’s waterfront is still lack of activity. Physically, the river now is seen as a nothingness. There is no synergy between old town, new development in Lent, and the river itself. And ironically, the concentration of old city center does not expanse to the waterfront. The river has built a speculative ‘backside’ of the city. Huge construction is currently happening at the other side of the Waal river. However, waterfront space quality is still not enjoyable. It made up a nonoperative urban landscape.

Summary At city scale, to alleviate the split, the proposal of water intervention that is integrated to entrance zones should re-link the entire city. The citical idea is to infill the water with program as part of city extension to the river. These programs become a tool to bridge city centre to the alienated north side. New built river on the north gives a bigger platform to demonstrates the infiltration proposal. This also implies different water intervention characteristic in the focus area. I devide the urban design into three parts: recreational and sport waterfront, pavilions waterfront, and floating market. The waters infiltration and transformation answers the calls from intangible spaces in the city.

27

At city scale, to alleviate the split, the proposal of water intervention that is integrated to entrance zones should relink the entire city. In addition, new waterfront design will support this big purpose. New connections mentioned on the map are specifically for small scale movements: pedestrian and bicycle. Eventually, the hub is the combination of program and physical excecution in concentration.

critical design

Essential land use next to the water such as industrial, green park, and commercial city center are revitalized, redesigned, and retained respectively. Later I will focus on the critical design area which has more complex context and bigger influence the city in general.

Summary In order to deal with water fluctuation on the river, different treatments are applied to each character of waterfront and floating program. Fixed multilevel ramp system for recreational waterfront; flexible connector ramp for floating pavilion waterfront; and fixed jetty with boats for floating market. These also give different adaptability during water fluctuation: sacrified spaces in fixed multilevel ramp system; follow the water height in flexible connector ramp system; dissappeared functions in fixed jetty system.

phasing alleviate the split nijmegen (NL) W.P. Hariyono 4411560 AR1U090 - E. Brandes

Summary The critical urban design will directly gives influences to the city as a whole complex system. In the first phase, it stimulates the movements, extends and transform the city center, intensifies waterfront, and builds “waterscape. The second phase is more focus on attracting city growth to the north. This could be done by densitification, new entertainment, and iconic development In bigger context, third phase is done to propose an integration with Arnhem with upgraded infrastructure between two cities. and together they become the center of economic hub in the east of The Netherlands

Ultimately, these water interventions also create a new identity, new ambition to Nijmegen on being extrovert. Not only represents the city, the river later will be a ceremony that welcomes everyone.
