The Varsity Volleyball Team of 2013 had the most competitive season ever! Several volleyball players came out for a long week of practice at Volleyball Camp before returning to school. We had several returning players on the team this year. There were ten players selected to play on the Varsity team. We hosted the 33rd ESDAA tournament the first weekend of November. The last time WPSD hosted the ESDAA tournament was in 2006. The Lady Lions were proud to come in second place. They had a long season and worked hard to complete the season with 20 wins and 11 losses. I’m really proud of my girls!!! To our special seniors this year, may memories from your years in the volleyball program be with you forever! -- Coach Christie Homell

We will not forget our special motto that we used: We will continue to use it throughout the volleyball seasons.

KEEP CALM AND STAY STABLE -- Coach Christie Homell

The 2013 – 2014 school year was my first year as Varsity Boys’ Basketball head coach. After seven years as assistant, I was really excited to become head coach. What an exciting year for this change at WPSD! The 17 players that participated this year were ready to show off the skills they have been building over the past couple of years. In November, we invited Jon Mowl, the nephew of WPSD Alumni (1965) and Board of Trustees member, Dr. Harold Mowl, to run a basketball clinic. Jon was one of the top basketball players at Gallaudet University. He was also a member of the gold medal winning United States Men’s Deaflympic Basketball Team. This clinic was for both the boys and girls basketball teams. Jon’s work with the players included basic basketball skills, drills, and practice strategies. Jon’s activities inspired and motivated the teams to improve their individual skills, which in turn benefited players as students, athletes, and teammates. It was clear that the players carried those skills into their game play. The bad weather impacted the team this season. We practiced without some players due to school closings, and the two Spartan Classic games in Ohio and one here were cancelled. On December 17th, the team snapped a two-year losing streak, winning the game at American Spirit Academy. The last time the WPSD boys’ team won was March 11, 2011. This was followed by a 44 game losing streak. This win inspired us to continue to play our best for the rest of the season. On February 6th, we beat Jefferson County Christian. They were in first place in our league and this was their first league loss. Earlier in December, we lost to them by 20 points. The win this season made for an exciting and loud experience in our gym. The Eastern School for the Deaf Athletic Association (ESDAA) Basketball Tournament was held February 21st to the 23rd at the Maryland School for the Deaf. We played against New Jersey in the first round. The Colts started the game with a hot streak. At the beginning of the game they led by 22 points. We were stubborn and played hard fighting them in the second half of the game. We caught up to them, behind by only 7 points. In the end we lost, but the players made me proud because they never gave up. In the next two games, we won one and lost the other. We finished in 6th place. My players showed great effort and maintained a great attitude during the tournament. We won the Free Throw Skills Competition and the Joe Giordano Sportsmanship Award. Travis Frye was selected for the All Tournament Team. Our season record was 8 wins and 15 losses. In league play our record was 5 wins and 3 losses. I’m proud of my players. There was a noticeable improvement from the beginning to the end of the season. We had a great season with GREAT attitudes in practices and games. They deserved to win the Sportsmanship Award. We will miss our five senior players. -- Coach David Tasselli

This was a transition year for the Girls’ Basketball team. We had three girls - Kai Miller, Megan Majocha and Tori Reeves join the team. They were former cheerleaders who wanted a new experience. We started the year off with a wonderful clinic presented by Jon Mowl. The girls enjoyed taking the skills they learned to show me what they could do. The first few games were a struggle for us, as we attempted to find our game. We had a lot of games that we could have won, but in the end were unable to produce the win. We finish with a 5-19 record. The Sports Banquet was an exciting evening for the seniors. There were two seniors on the team this year, Jaime Friday and Roché Tolbert. I had the great opportunity to coach two wonderful young ladies for several years. Both were captains for the girls’ team, as well as leaders on and off the court. These young ladies have learned the skills of basketball, as well as life. They have developed the skills necessary to lead their peers and encourage teamwork. The commitment and dedication they have shown to the school is remarkable, and I hope it carries on with the younger girls. We were off to the ESDAA tournament at Maryland. The first night was a hot game against New Jersey. It was a full team effort with Roché Tolbert leading the scoring with 7 points, followed by Pantera Stoykovich, Megan Majocha, Jaime Friday, and Alyssa Hulme all scoring 4 points. New Jersey won the game in the end by the score of 27-26. The next day we faced The Learning Center. With a strong defense, we were able to shut down their offense with a 30-12 win. On Sunday, we faced the strong Rochester team. At the half, we were up by 9 points, but their strong defense stopped and beat us 18-38. We completed the ESDAA tournament in 6th place. Roché Tolbert was selected for the All Tournament Team and as a whole WPSD won the SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD - what an honor! I have always known that the girls had a wonderful attitude with others, but having other coaches nominate your team shows the character they demonstrate to other individuals. The experience gained by the underclassmen at the ESDAA tournament will give them the foundation for next year. I truly appreciate the girls’ hard work and determination. It was an honor to coach the team and I look forward to next year.

S-P-I-R-I-T! That’s what our cheerleaders are proud to have. They all have worked extremely hard this season - practicing new cheers and chants, cheering at home and away games, selling baked cookies, and most of all, showing their SPIRIT for our school! The Varsity squad traveled to the Maryland School for the Deaf for the ESDAA (Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association) Cheerleading Competition to compete against another five schools. They won third place! Assistant Coach Venita and I are very proud of them. -- Coach Linda Langer

WPSD students with the Oak Lodge students visiting the Harry Potter Studios!

Big Ben, the London Eye, Harry Potter Studios, Buckingham Palace - the entire world awaited for the current seniors to enter and explore! Oak Lodge, a school for the deaf located in England, invited our seniors to visit London! Everybody was so excited because we were dying to explore London. We flew to London, which took a long time. When we landed, we were welcomed by an interesting breakfast that the Oak Lodge made for us. We were shocked by the fact that there were baked beans and chocolate with bread. We were open to trying new things! On the very first day, still exhausted from jet lag, we were thrilled to be in the majestic city of London! We walked, chatted with people, and tried to pick up on the British Sign Language. When we saw Big Ben, they told us that the clock tower was famous for the bell. We were really surprised at the size of Big Ben! Then we visited Buckingham Palace to see the guards, rode on the London Eye, went to a beach consisting of pebbles instead of sand, and walked along the amazing Brighton Pier with many events and restaurants. The Harry Potter fans, were also thrilled to visit the studios that created the Harry Potter movies. We met many new people that we will never forget. For the entire week, we learned many new things and it was definitely a life changing experience for the seniors. Even though it is a year later, we still sit and talk about it and how great it was. This is something the seniors will never forget!

New York City

Lights! Cameras! Action! The New York City experience was amazing for both the sophomores and juniors. We saw the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, FAO Schwarz, Radio City Music Hall, the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, and much more! We visited Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas tree and skating rink. We went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Everybody loved the European paintings done by painters such as Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. Some people liked the Egyptian and Greek arts as well. We also enjoyed St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. We even ate at Times Square to taste an authentic New York deli sandwich. We did some fun shopping in Little Italy and Chinatown. It was a great cultural experience for all of us to learn many new things.

Halloween

Seniors threw this amazing party with tons of dancing.

Those kids are rocking their fabulous outifts as they do their trick and treating!

Ghouls, zombies, spirits, vampires, and witches created an amazing Halloween experience at W.PS.D. this year! Children had the chance to trick or treat around the school; dorm students unleashed their creative pumpkin carving skills; and the high school students decorated the Children’s Village that scared a lot of children! What a Halloween - but it didn’t end! The seniors hosted a dance in the Children’s Center Playroom for the high school students. They transformed the room into a ghoulish and terrifying place, filled with fun, new memories, and delicious food! Everyone played games such as hot potato, teddy-bear hug, limbo, and more! The students scared many and asked others who they were. Seniors sure know how to throw a party!

The Holidays

Amy Alverson’s drama classes presented a fabulous play featuring Christmas in Australia!

Participants in the Holiday Card Contest sponsored by VITAC. Samantha Gibbs was the winner.

GAA planned a perfect party for the Elementary School students. They called Santa to come from the North Pole to visit and see if the children were being naughty or nice, but apparently Santa was busy getting ready for his travels!

Christmas sparkled as greenery was hung, trees lit up, cookies eaten, and little children sat quietly as they listened to “How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The teenagers also wanted to celebrate the holiday! The juniors worked hard create a magical atmosphere and host a party fit enough for Christmas! People cheered, danced to the music, played teddy-bear hug, couples hot potato, and many more games. We enjoyed the delicious foods that were made by real elves. We must applaud their holiday joy they truly captured the feeling of Christmas in a night!

Valentine’s Day

Bottom: Sam explains how good the cookies are!

Love is everywhere when the sophomores hosted the “hearty” party for Valentine’s Day! Everybody was so thrilled to go and had tons of fun playing games and eating delicious food. The Olympics were on and some kids enjoyed watching them. The songs blasted so loudly that our hearts beat along with them! We played teddy-bear hug and musical chairs with the men as chairs and the women competing for the victory! We had a lot of fun and delicious prizes were awarded to the lovebirds that shined the brightest! Cupid’s arrow definitely struck this party!

Let’s get our passports out and get ready for a great prom! This year’s theme was “Passport to Europe” and everybody had a huge blast! Balloons flew, everyone was in love, and the food was great! We danced until our feet were sore and took so many pictures that we couldn’t keep count. Jaime Friday and Andrew Weik were voted the Prom Queen and King and they dipped under the Big Ben to celebrate the evening!

Jaime Friday

At the age of 5, Jaime started to get involved with a mini-horse and then how to take care of horses (using sawdust, providing oats and hay and releasing the horses outside). She was eager to be involved with the Mini-horse Halter Show in the Huntingdon County Fair about 7 years ago (around 2007). She was involved for 2 years and got ribbons. She learned how to do horse barrels about 5 years ago (2009) and she fell madly in love with racing the barrels more than the halter show. I gave her an Appaloosa horse on her 14th birthday. She was so thrilled to have her own horse and named it Chief. She is now involved in barrel racing and has received a lot of ribbons and trophies. Last year, she received two champion trophies for barrels at the Huntingdon County Fairground. She is looking forward to going barrel racing for many shows this summer at the Huntingdon County Fair, the Williamsburg Horse Show and the Butler Big Fair. I am proud of her motivation to work with her own horse. She has also enjoyed pheasant hunting with me. She has grown up to be a fine lady and taking on the responsibility of her own horse. I wish you all the success in your future dream job. --------Love, DAD We were blessed to have you for our first daughter. You and your young sister, Cassie, are a few years apart and went through the different stages. You were the best kid ever and now you have turned out to be a wonderful, beautiful, sensitive, compassionate, funny and intelligent young lady. I cherish every moment I have with you. I’ve watched you grow from that tiny, happy, laughing girl that would melt my heart, to a strong, beautiful, amazing woman. I have sweet memories of laying cuddled up with you in bed playing, laughing and talking with you about school, friends and boys and I know that we have so many more memories to make. You began at the Tyrone Head Start when you were 3 years old. Then at the age of 4, I decided to bring you to the Children’s Center at WPSD for your first day of school. It was very difficult to let you go. From the ages of 4 to 17, you have accomplished much through the years and have grown up quickly! You played Mighty Mites Soccer, volleyball, basketball, track and baseball. In 2013, your team won 1st place in baseball and 2nd place in volleyball. You did wonderfully and you are a very athletic girl. The days and years have flown by so fast. I know you will be successful in everything you do. I have loved you from the moment I first saw you and I always will. We are very proud of you. We wish you a success in the future, good health and happiness. Our love and support will always be here as a family. -----Lots and Lots of Love, Mom, Stephen and Cassie Jaime, it seems like yesterday when you were born and I held you in my arms. And then as you grew, we would always have so much fun playing games and somehow you always seem to win. Now here you are all grown up and ready to graduate. I am very proud of you and wish the very best for you in the future. -----Lots of love, Grandma
