OUR Port chester: Downtown Buzz

This village, founded in 1868, is nestled between the Big Apple and the Connecticut border. It has been through many changes and is currently undergoing its next revival. The Port Chester waterfront is on the Byram River, which winds into the Long Island Sound. Greenwich, Connecticut, is just across on the other side. The village covers 2.5 square miles, and everything is within walking distance, including the Metro-North train station. The commute to Grand Central Terminal is about 40 minutes, and it is 15 minutes to Stamford’s many office buildings. There are public buses to White Plains, Tarrytown, NYC and Fairfield CT. Taxis are available for minimal fare within Port Chester.

The center has also become the go-to for fitness enthusiasts. Offering a selection of boutique style training studios, including Soulcycle, RIPPED Fitness, SLT (Strengthen, Lengthen & Tone) and Bikram Yoga studio. Also available locally is Crunch and GoStride, a new cardio workout with a series of runs, hills, intervals, pushes and climbs set to energizing music. THE RESTAURANT AND ENTERTAINMENT CAPITAL OF WESTCHESTER Port Chester’s downtown “Restaurant Row” has gained a regional reputation as “the restaurant capital of Westchester.” Offering international cuisine at dozens of critically acclaimed establishments such as celebrity Chef Mario Batali’s Tarry Lodge trattoria. Heartland Black+Gold Bar and Eatery features a sleek design with a bistro atmosphere and spacious outdoor dining. Saltaire Oyster Bar and Fish House, a stylish, bustling restaurant and bar, is located in Port Chester’s beautiful old granary warehouse. Rye House, a version of the Chelsea gastro pub, serves artisanal spirits, craft cocktails, domestic craft beer and the best of regional American cuisine. In the Summer of 2017, Portchester will welcome Colony Grill, famous for their thin crust pizza.

The changing face of the village, which is part of the Town of Rye, has been partly the result of an economic makeover linked to a larger downtown revitalization strategy. As a result, the historic character of the downtown business district has been enhanced while economic and residential activity increases. This vibrant village quickly becoming known for its culture, restaurants and the arts, attracts young residents with 28% between the ages of 18 and 34. Offering great and affordable housing for singles and starting families, there are hundreds of rental apartments with many located in the heart of the downtown, more co-ops than any Westchester town/village, and affordable condos and These new establishments join a mix of Peruvian, homes for sale in charming residential neighborhoods. The Capitol Theatre has been host to a number of popular musical acts and is considered a musical landmark. Music fans from around the country travel to Port Chester for a live music experience at the historic theatre, which is known to have hosted such acts as Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead, Phish, Bob Dylan, My Morning Jacket, Lauryn Hill, and Willie Nelson among many others.

Four Elementary Schools serve students in grades K-5 and offer a variety of creative programs that instill a love of learning in its students. District wide, heavy emphasis is placed on literacy and math skills in the early years and students are involved in a grade-appropriate, handson inquiry based science program. A K-5 dual language program is an option for entering Kindergarteners at Park Avenue School. Thomas Edison School is a National School of Character. King Street School was recognized as a High Performing/Gap Closing School by the New York State Education Department. John. F. Kennedy Magnet School, a National Blue Ribbon School with a math, science and technology focus, offers a comprehensive bilingual program to its students. Port Chester Middle School, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence serves about 1,000 students in 6th - 8th grades. Students are offered a range of academic experiences including foreign language instruction, physical sciences taught in their unique Planetarium, hands-on experimental science courses in their state-ofthe-art science labs, and accelerated English, math and science strands for gifted students. Students participate in band and orchestra, drama, choral groups, sports teams, astronomy and other clubs and groups.

The students in the Port Chester High School select from a range of options including Honors, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement courses. Over 95% of graduates are college bound each year, attending such schools as Boston University, Columbia, Ithaca College, Lehigh, NYU, Penn State, Princeton, University of Delaware, the US military academies, and the SUNY colleges and universities. Students can challenge their potential and broaden themselves in art, choir, theater, journalism, student government, and a multitude of activities. The school offers a full interscholastic boys and girls sports program at the modified, junior and varsity levels. Music is very popular in Port Chester schools. The Port Chester High School Marching Band has performed at Giants Stadium, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Orange Bowl Parade as well as other large events; the band also participated in several feature films including the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th Street (during the opening parade scene) and Spider-Man 3.


OUR RECREATION Recreational resources

Port Chester has five public parks. Lyon Park contains two little league fields and a playground. It is home to the historic BushLyon Homestead, which was built during the early 1700s in preRevolutionary War days and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 20-acre park hosts a summer concert series. Located in Port Chester, the Clay Art Center is a nationall recognized non-profit center for the advancement of ceramic arts. The studio provides artists with studio space and offers extraordinary clay classes and workshops for adults and children. As a part of Rye Town, Rye Brook and Port Chester also participate in the Rye Nature Center, a bird sanctuary and wildlife preserve, The Rye Arts Center, which maintains a multi-disciplinary program of classes and exhibitions in the visual, performing, media and literary arts and the Rye YMCA. Columbus Park, a nine-acre park has one basketball and two volleyball courts, playgrounds, a picnic pavilion with picnic grills, a seasonal water spray playground and an artificial turf soccer field. Joseph Curtis Recreation Park, located north of the Village’s downtown, has a small playground structure, one adult size baseball field and batting cage, a roller skating rink and BOCCE courts with fencing and lighting. Abendroth Park, a 10-acre park includes a newly renovated section for dogs. Edgewood Park has one youth baseball field and small playground structure. Crawford Park is owned by the town of Rye. The park is used for soccer, tee-ball, and softball by the village. Port Chester residents also enjoy the facilities of the Town of Rye. Rye Town Park and Oakland Beach are wonderful for public recreation and relaxation. A number of scheduled activities including Shakespeare in the park, magic shows and outdoor movies take place. The Recreation Department offers a wide variety of year-round programs for pre-school children to senior citizens, including youth baseball league, youth soccer league, youth football league, summer camp, athletics, hobbies and programs for the disabled.

The Rye YMCA is a family-oriented service organization which welcomes all people and promotes positive values through programs that build spirit, mind, and body. The Y is an invaluable support to our community, offering a variety of swim and fitness classes, parenting workshops, programs for toddlers and children (including child care and school holiday programs) and classes for you and your child. There are a number of community-centered programs which include diabete prevention, triatholn training, teen nights, and summer camps.

Neuberger Museum of art, Purchase The Neuberger Museum of Art, an integral part of Purchase College, is the premier museum of modern, contemporary, and African art in Westchester and Fairfield counties. A teaching museum, the Neuberger promotes the appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts as inseperable from an understanding of their place in cultural and intellectual history and their relevance to contemporary social life.

Donald M. Kenall Sculpture Garden at Pepsico In 1970, the world headquarters of PepsiCo was opened here in an office building designed by Edward Durrell Stone (Architect of Washington’s Kennedy Center). Three prominent landscape designers were chosen to lay out the surronding grounds-E.D. Stone Jr. (the architect’s son), Russell Page, and Francois Goffinet. The resulting landscape incorporates 45 sculptures, including pieces by Alexander Calder, George Segal, and David Smith. Newcomers & Expat Support The Rye Newcomers and Neighbors Club is a social organization that will introduce you to the Rye community through many events and activites. Rye Expat Club is a group of over 150 families who have moved from overseas to live in and around Rye, New York. They have members from around the world, now living in Rye, Rye Brook, Harrison, Purchase, Port Chester, Mamaroneck, Scarsdale, and parts of Connecticut. Their primary goal is to provide a support network, help you settle, have fun and make new friends!
