More working artists live in San Juan County than in any other county in Washington State, making the island a highly enjoyable and culturally rich haven for locals and visitors alike. There are seven unique galleries in walking distance to the ferry dock! The self-guided artist’s studio tour in early June offers a glimpse into the world of visual artists. An entire section at the local bookstore is dedicated to the isle’s authors. There is live music at the San Juan Brewery, Herbs Tavern and the Farmer’s Market on weekends. And there’s more:

San Juan Island Sculpture Parkroche Harbor

In the woods near Roche Harbor Resort is the John S. McMillin Memorial mausoleum. Erected by the founder of the quarries and Hotel de Haro, the mausoleum is hidden on a hill and only accessible by walking a trail through a nearby graveyard. The center of the mausoleum is a table surrounded by six chairs as crypts for the ashes of the McMillian family, representing their reunion after death. The site is on the National Registry of Historic Places and should be shown respect.
