Letter from the Chairperson
Our strategic plan in education lies primarily on learners’ development particularly leaners in grade 9, 10, and 11. The action plan that we are implementing within township public schools works effectively although we have a long way to achieve our objectives. One fundamental aspect that we are currently executing is the distribution of career guidance across the borders of the Free State to ensure that learners become acquainted with various courses available at universities prior arriving at higher learning institution. We at BEC, use education as a tool to fight youth unemployment.

Letter from the Vice Chairperson
The level of education in township public schools differ significantly from that of ‘’upstate public schools (private)’’. As a result, learners in public school normally provide a vague knowledge in various educational programs, from content to career. In order to transform pedagogy in township public schools, new pedagogical strategies need to be implemented in townships schools. Although the passing rate in these aforementioned schools differ to a certain extent, we (BEC) aim to work towards helping Free State province in implementing our educational programs that align with Basic Education Department to educate children and inspire them to do well when they get to matric exams.

Brilliance Extra Classes Strategic Overview
Over the past two years, Brilliance Extra Classes (BEC) has impacted positively in some of the Free State township public schools through its programmes. A fundamental emphasis is to uplift underperforming schools within the province by engaging learners in our educational programmes. The two key focus areas are extra classes and career guidance within the province. The quality of education remains a primary apprehension for South African Government and aim to enrich its quality. Grade 9 learners in particular are assessed by Annual National Assessment (ANA) to improve literacy and numeracy. These two critical points are the core areas the Government needs to improve. BEC strategic plan focuses primarily in learners doing grade 9, 10, & 11 aimed at invigorating learning environment in township public school. The organisation has made meaningful changes within the lives of those unprivileged by giving them an opportunity to know the imperatives of education.

Our educational programmes align with Basic Education Department objectives, and during the course of the financial year BEC has implemented its programmes. We are currently moving towards measuring the impact of our programmes in schools. Career guidance on the other hand emerges to increase the number of township public school learners to pursue post-schooling education. We have been working with universities within the Free State, University of the Free State (UFS) but mostly Central University of Technology (CUT) thus far. BEC allot learning in schools by tutoring the following subjects: Accounting; Business Studies; Economics; Economic Management Sciences; English; Life Orientation; Life Sciences; Mathematics; Natural Sciences; and Physical Sciences.
BEC adopt a School Enriching learners performance In 2014, BEC adopted Commtech Comprehensive School due to its poor matric passing rate in Class of 2013. The school had the poorest passing rate of 67.74% in Motheo District, Free State. BEC adopted the school with the hope of transforming the passing rate paying much attention in pre-matric learners. Classes commenced on the 8th February 2014 aimed particularly to furnish a stimulating learning environment to learners in grade 9 to 11. The primary focus in this context was to prepare learners for various challenges they may face when they get to grade 12 and allot strategies on how to tackle the problems. The first trimester of 2014 was designed exclusively for this school. Pupils alluded that they were very delighted to have BEC project at the school. Pupils from the aforementioned school were assessed based on the work they did towards the end of the trimester in order to evaluate the performance for major subjects. We were unable to measure our impact due to internal conflicts of school management, hence BEC abandoned the school.

Autumn Classes
Xhariep District
Edenburg and Trompsburg Four other Free State Districts are not the direct measures of the execution of our objectives, they are however a platform of inspiration for learners to enhance their passing rate through motivation and giving classes for a week (5 days) and career guidance in the process. Autumn classes were conducted during March school holidays (31 March – 5 April 2014) in Xhariep District, Western Free State in two towns namely Edenburg and Trompsburg. During the visit, BEC tutors were actively dispensing extra classes to learners in Albertina Sisulu SS and Trompsburg SS. Learners were assessed towards the end of the week to evaluate whether they understand the work done during the week. During this period, and according CAPS syllabus, term 1 work were repeated by BEC to ensure that learners remain on track with the work.
On Saturday BEC organised career guidance in Edenburg Community hall and the second career guidance was conducted in Trompsburg SS. Due to the fact that majority of students that are enrolling at universities are from “upstate public schools”, BEC support township learners to access universities through its career guidance programme. BEC involve parents/guardians to support learners in education and to comprehend the imperatives of formal education. BEC Annual Report

Parents meeting
Parent’s involvement Free State education department initiative to encourage parents to support learners in formal education was held at CUT on the 4th May 2014. Motheo district Director Ms Motsoeneng was the speaker of the day. The role of parents in children’s education is enormous and should be nurtured through genuine interventions. During the gathering, BEC ventured assistance to pupils in grade 12 with career guidance and outlined the courses that are available at CUT for 2015 academic year. Matric learners have benefitted from career guidance programme and one of the learners commented, “Brilliance Extra Classes project has helped me to know about career path that best suit me and I provided a vague knowledge prior being allotted guidance, thank you BEC’’. BEC project continue to inspire learners to pursue post-schooling education.

Career Guidance Overview
Career guidance as a tool should be dispensed effectively in township public schools to ensure that learners in these schools are well equipped with valuable information prior arriving at higher learning institutions. This will in turn reduces the amount of students dropping out at universities because in most cases students dropping out at universities are those that did not receive career guidance while they were in matric. However, BEC has initiated career guidance in order to assist learners with career choices that are available at university, minimum requirements, subject combination and opportunities available post university. In 2014 academic year, BEC embarked with career guidance in Motheo district, Free State whereby township schools in Bloemfontein (some) were visited by the organisation. BEC also travelled Free State districts with the primary objective of dispensing career guidance in those affected areas by scarcity of university information. Grade 12 learners are not within the boundaries of BEC; however, the organization is aware about lack of information in grade 12 pupils, particularly those in township public schools. As a result, BEC include grade 12 pupils on their career guidance programs in order to give them guidelines on various courses available at South African universities. Furthermore, the organisation aims to expand its program in the future in such a way that all universities within the country implement guidance at an early age. BEC Annual Report

Bloemfontein
Career Development BEC career guidance programme is a useful tool that has been executed in disadvantaged communities since 2013 in order to improve the knowledge in career choices. Following March 2014 school holidays, BEC implemented the plan of travelling Free State province to educate young learners about the importance of education. Our career guidance program includes importance of education, CUT prospectus, financial assistance through NSFAS and bursaries, and university lifestyle.
The schools that BEC targeted in Bloemfontein for career dispensation were Vulamasango SS and Commtech CS. The school principal from Vulamasango SS was available to witness the prestigious event. She commented that “It’s very rare to see young people lobbying on big issues like career development, and conveying career guidance in a civilised manner”. Supporting learner’s particularly Black township children to access universities shall be a legacy we will leave for our predecessors.

Learners at Mpatleng and Tlokola SS received a tremendous support from CUT affiliate regarding career guidance. It is imperative to continue to venture assistance to grade 12 pupils to eradicate setback that inevitably hinder learning in their schools. We, at BEC believe that majority of learners in township public schools are the victims of unemployment and this constantly affect them post schooling. Venturing assistance is one of the core mandates that we are currently implementing within township schools to enable learners to be inspired and do well in education in general.

One of the mandates of BEC is the distribution of career guidance across the province. Thus, slightly big areas across the province were the main targets for the organization in order to effectively educate pupils about careers. These areas include Ficksburg, Bothaville, Kroonstad, and Wesselsbron. We continue impact positively in townships through showing learners the imperatives of formal education and going directly into their schools, which serves as a good incentive for these young minds.
